Business name : Silver Gate Yacht Club

In 1951, the Silver Gate Yacht Club began as just a dream in the hearts of a handful of San Diego Boat owners, but it soon evolved into a commitment to make this dream a reality.

The first step was the completion of by-laws that were needed to receive a state charter. These by-laws came together during an overnight camp out on the bare sands of Shelter Island and were finished at dawn. An event celebrated at our Silver Fizz breakfast

The next goal was a clubhouse and adjoining marina. This began with members pledges which came in slowly as the club continued to grow. At last there was enough to move forward. A lease was signed with the San Diego port district and construction began. The club’s first social event — a wall raising followed by a pot luck dinner — was the first regular meeting held on the Silver Gate Yacht Club’s own property.

When the charter was granted in November 1952, and application made for recognition by the Southern California Yachting Association, the Silver Gate was on the way to becoming the fastest growing club in San Diego.

For over 60 years the Silver Gate Yacht Club has built a proud history of bringing boaters together for friendship, camaraderie and to continue its long tradition of giving back to the community.

Silver Gate Yacht Club members represent a rich cross-section of sailors, power boaters, fisherman, racers and all who love being on the water and building friendships and socializing with others who do.

We also bring our love of the water to the San Diego community through three signature annual charitable events – the Wheelchair Regatta, the Schooner Cup and our hosting of the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, plus offering an extensive Junior Sailing Program.

You are invited to explore the Silver Gate Yacht Club and consider becoming part of our community.

Summer Program

silver gate yacht

SGYC junior sailing provides a full day summer program of sailing instruction and fun at Silver Gate Yacht Club for young sailors from 8 to 18 years of age, along with the opportunity for interested sailors to participate in sailing activities year-round at SGYC. The Junior Sailing Program at Silver Gate promotes good sportsmanship, responsibility and a sense of adventure and accomplishment regardless of skill level. Sailors will learn the skills necessary for a lifetime of sailing and boating enjoyment and probably come away with some great friendships too!

We have a fleet of the exciting new O’Pen BIC and RS Feva boats as well as Naples Sabots, Capri 14 and a Hunter 216 keel boat. Use of the SGYC Jr. Sailing fleet of boats is included in the program cost so chartering is not necessary. Our coach/sailor ratio is very low – usually not more than 5 or 6 sailors per coach which ensures plenty of teaching time and attention. Click here to ‘Meet the Fleet’

silver gate yacht

Our Summer Program runs Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. Sailors will receive on-land and on-water instruction. A one hour lunch break will be provided. Sailors should bring their lunch and any snacks or preferred drinks. SGYC will have plenty of bottled water available.

silver gate yacht

CLOTHING: Each sailor should bring two sets of clothing consisting of a t-shirt, shorts or jeans, socks, light windbreaker, change of underwear and rubber-soled shoes (no sandals of flip-flops). Rubber soled diving shoes or water shoes are best for sailing. Bathing suits are acceptable in addition to the above items. All clothes must be in a labeled gym bag or backpack. Juniors are encouraged to supply their own lifejackets/personal floatation device (PFD), but SGYC has loaners available. While on the docks and on the water all sailors must wear a PFD – no exceptions.

Refer to the Parent Resource Guide available on our web site for additional helpful information.

silver gate yacht

TRANSPORTATION: Parents of junior sailors must provide their own transportation to and from SGYC. Ample public parking is available across Shelter Island Drive from the club. Juniors are expected to leave the premises by 3:00p.m. No after-hours supervision will be provided. Juniors under the age of 16 must be met by their parents on SGYC property.

This year’s Summer Program promises to be an exciting, fun and fulfilling experience for anyone from 8 to 18 interested in sailing – and who wouldn’t love to learn sailing in a perfect location like San Diego bay!!

We look forward to seeing you this summer!!

Start sailing this summer!

We limit our weekly groups to about 14 sailors. Sign up now! Membership at SGYC is not required. Open to all kids who want to sail!

Silver Gate Yacht Club Involvement

silver gate yacht

SAN DIEGO— Silver Gate Yacht Club, lives on Shelter Island in San Diego and has big projects and programs going on behind the scenes. This club offers all the amenities a member is looking for but is also involved in a beneficial project called Urban Oyster, has a junior sailing program, and operates the SGYC Foundation.

Junior and senior students from High Tech High in Point Loma have been studying oyster recruitment at yacht club docks in San Diego Bay. In May, the team had placed oyster “condos” which are devices designed for oysters to recruit to in the water, and have been monitoring their progress along with water quality.

SGYC has less than five oysters, along with San Diego Yacht Club, Southwestern Yacht Club has approximately 35 oysters, and Shelter Island Marina has about 15.

The team returned to the sites for additional testing and species assessment of the inside of the condos twice during October. The students have designed research investigations based on the data they collected from those visits. Current topics of interest include the impact of temperature and oxygen on oyster distribution and competitive fouling, and the condos themselves.

In addition to the Urban Oyster program, the SGYC also has a junior sailing program. The program focuses on teaching kids the basics of sailing and not grooming them for the Olympics, a mission uncommon for a yacht club. The program is open to children ages 8-16 and offers personalized instruction in their fleet of modern dinghies and keel boats.

The SGYC was founded in 1952, and since then, the club has implemented and hosted annual signature charitable regattas such as the Wheelchair Regatta, where members and volunteers share SGYC with hundreds of disabled individuals to enjoy a “Day on the Bay” with lunch and music and the Schooner Cup.

For more information on SGYC, how to schedule a tour for those interested in becoming a member, or information about their programs, please visit  https://www.sgyc.org/ .

Silver Gate YC Junior Program

Silver Gate YC’s program is designed around a small physical footprint and a high instructor-to-student ratio. Program director Kent Prater said, “Making sailors for life is our priority, and we don’t take it lightly. We believe that pressure to always compete drives too many kids away from a sport they could enjoy for a lifetime.” In his submission to PCYA, while paying respect to racing programs that also turn out lifelong sailors, Prater described his system as complementary, attracting certain kids who experience Silver Gate’s offerings as a safety valve from the sharp focus of competition.

RS Feva sailing with spinnaker

Most of Silver Gate’s participants are new to sailing, however. No club affiliation is required. “We see success in how many of our first-time kids come back for additional weeks of sailing,” Prater said. “There’s also the kid who ages out and then comes back during college years to join our instruction staff.”

The award was announced at PCYA’s Change of Watch on March 1. Bobbi Campbell, 2022 PCYA commodore, said, “We had great entries for the Garrett Horder award, an amazing fact considering the restraints of COVID. But one program rose above the others for inclusion and fun. Director Kent Prater knows how to share the great secret, that there is nothing half so much worth doing as messing about in boats, simply messing.”

The practical limitations of Silver Gate YC’s site hold student numbers to about 14 in a program week. Sailors are aged 8 to 18, with never more than four students per instructor.

Young people in a keelboat cockpit

Silver Gate has a small keelboat for adventuring around San Diego Bay, but most instruction — including the weekly beach picnic/paddleboard extravaganza — takes place close to the base in a variety of dinghies including RS Fevas, Sabots and, especially, Bic Sports. Prater relates that Bics are ideal for un-regattas in which kids develop boat-handling skills while they think they’re just goofing around capsizing on the whistle or aiming for the biggest splash.

Sailing an O'Pen Bic to a buoy

“We are honored and gratified to receive the Horder Trophy,” Prater said. “We do things a bit differently. We work hard to create a program where kids from all backgrounds are excited to learn in a safe, non-competitive environment. This award is a wonderful validation of the support we receive from our club members and the efforts of our volunteers, who find their hours here gratifying and downright joyful.”

About the Pacific Coast Yachting Association

PCYA was founded in 1923 to promote the greatest good across the spectrum of yachting on the Pacific Coast of North America and in Hawaii. Its constituents are the 10 associations from San Diego to Vancouver that represent hundreds of clubs and thousands of sailors.

Garrett Horder trophy

The Garrett Horder Memorial Trophy is a rich, 19th century Currier & Ives print of the sail/steam vessel  San Francisco, displayed in the library of St. Francis Yacht Club. PCYA has awarded it since 2000.

I’m so proud of our club! Last year was our daughter’s first in the Jr. program and she gained a lot of boat confidence. Kent, all other volunteers, and the instructors definitely deserve the kudos! I’d like to give a shout out to my wife, Kristina Hysler, who helped with the program’s social media outreach to get more kids from our community involved.

Congratulations to Kent and the entire team. What a great program, and honor

silver gate yacht

We are so proud of our Junior Sailing program! Two of our grandsons started the program at age 8 and returned each year until they aged out. One went on to become an instructor for a season. They both continue to love sailing and messing around with boats in part because they had so much fun learning to sail. Congratulations to Kent and all the SGYC members who assist with the program in so many different ways.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

silver gate yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

silver gate yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

silver gate yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

silver gate yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

silver gate yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

silver gate yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

silver gate yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

MASTERPIECES OF RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE (Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val)

The Tretiakov Gallery’s building on Krymsky Val houses the only permanent exhibition of 20th century Russian art in the country. It displays works of Russian avant-garde masters such as K.Malevich, V.Kandinsky, M.Chagall, P.Filonov. This collection was later extended by paintings of the Socialist Realism of the period 1930s-1950s. The works of artists of the «Severe Style» from the 1960s are shown together with the «underground» art, which started the «second wave» of Russian avant-garde. Then the exhibition was completed by works of the 1980s-1990s and now, in accordance with the idea of the founder, the collection is constantly updated with the latest and most topical works of Russian artists.

HOUSE OF THE BOYARS ROMANOV

Zaryadye - that's how in the old days was called the central part of Moscow located "behind the ranks" (in Russian "za ryadami") of market shops adjacent to the Kremlin. The house of the boyars Romanov is the only building that remains today from that large estate. In the middle of the 20th century, most of the Zaryadye district was demolished, and nowadays in the whole old quarter there are only several buildings along the Varvarka street. However, this small area of Moscow is truly unique in its kind and is an authentic museum of ancient Russian outdoor architecture of the XVI-XVIII centuries. Now the house of the Boyars Romanov is a museum of the daily life of ancient Russia.

FOLK SHOW KOSTROMA

The plot of the show is the history of Russia from old times to the present moment and the multicultural traditions of our country, presented in national dances and songs. Around 50 artists, colourful sets, beautiful costumes make the show unforgettable.
