EXCLUSIVE: Lürssen's 146m superyacht Project Opera breaks cover- Share this on Facebook

By Mairead Finlay 16 April 2021 The technical launch of Lürssen's latest superyacht Project Opera has taken place at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg this morning. Due for delivery next year, she is believed to be a replacement for the 146m motor yacht SASSI, which was unfortunately destroyed in a fire at Lürssen's German shipyard in 2018. She's been moved to a floating dock before departing to Bremen shortly where she will begin outfitting and prepare for sea trials. Project OPERA believed to be a direct replacement of destroyed vesselAs typical of Lürssen projects (such as motor yacht NORD ), superyacht Project Opera's build was shrouded in secrecy and completed in record time too: given that she is reportedly the exact same staggering length as luxury yacht SASSI. According to our exclusive images of Project Opera at the Hamburg shipyard, she appears to be a direct replacement of the destroyed vessel, with similar porthole window designs. We can see she has generous outdoor spaces, including a Jacuzzi on the sundeck and a large swimming pool on the main deck aft. The photos also reveal she has an ample beach club, swimming platform and tender garages. ![yacht called opera Technical launch of Lurssen's motor yacht OPERA](https://image.yachtcharterfleet.com/w1040/h545/qh/ca/ow-1/ka18d1f41/cms/photo/1653869/motor-yacht-opera.jpg) Photo credits: Steffen Mayer https://superyachtblog.de/ As one would expect of a superyacht of this size and calibre, Project Opera will almost certainly have the finest facilities for her owner and guests to enjoy. In terms of convenience and the least intrusion possible, this will likely include an elevator, a separate crew passageway and an owner's study. For the ultimate indulgence, a variety of pampering facilities such as a sauna, spa, massage room and hammam are also anticipated to be featured, providing guests with their own reinvigorating private paradise. Other probable amenities include a cinema and a gym. As for her expected exterior features, she will likely have 2 helipads, including one on the bow — which has become the new standard for superyachts over 100m. ![yacht called opera Superyacht Lurssen's Project Opera at Blohm and Voss shipyard](https://image.yachtcharterfleet.com/w1040/h545/qh/cs0-1030-3500-1830/ow-1/kc55ba2a6/cms/photo/1654017/project-opera-lurssen-superyacht.jpg) Will motor yacht OPERA be available for yacht charter? It is believed that Project Opera will be a private yacht and will not become available for superyacht charters once delivered. On the eve of the Independence Day holiday, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Thomas for "possible violations of ethics and tax laws" in his "repeated and willful omissions" of gifts from wealthy benefactors. "The scale of the potential ethics violations by Justice Thomas, and the willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws, exceeds the conduct of other government officials investigated by the Department of Justice for similar violations," Whitehouse and Wyden wrote. "The breadth of the omissions uncovered to date, and the serious possibility of additional tax fraud and false statement violations by Justice Thomas and his associates, warrant the appointment of a Special Counsel to investigate this misconduct." READ MORE: Expert: Clarence Thomas could face 'criminal prosecution' by not paying taxes on gifts On page 14 of the PDF Whitehouse posted to his Senate website, there are two lists of gifts to Thomas. The first list describes gifts from far-right real estate magnate Harlan Crow, and the second list shows gifts from other wealthy sponsors, like entrepreneur Anthony Welters — who "loaned" Thomas a luxury RV and then later forgave the loan — and billionaire Wayne Huizenga. The gifts from Crow date back to 2003, and list excursions like "Yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and Helicopter to Yusipov Palace, St. Petersburg." Out of the roughly two dozen gifts Crow gave to Thomas, four are private school tuition payments for his grand-nephew. Many of Crow's other gifts were private jet flights and yacht cruises, including one Sens. Whitehouse and Wyden described as "around Greek islands." And out of the gifts on the second list, three were from Huizenga, two were from Welters, and five were from former Berkshire Hathaway board member David Sokol. Billionaire Warren Buffett, who owns Berkshire Hathaway, forced Sokol out in 2011 after he learned that Sokol bought a stake in a company he later convinced Buffett's company to buy. Buffett called Sokol's actions "inexplicable" and "inexcusable." "No government official should be above the law. Supreme Court justices are properly expected to obey laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and the appearance of impropriety and to comply with the federal tax code," the senators wrote. "We therefore request that you appoint a Special Counsel authorized to investigate potential criminal violations by Justice Thomas under the disclosure, false statement, and tax laws; pursue leads of related criminal violations by donors, lenders and intermediate corporate entities; and determine whether any such loans and gifts were provided pursuant to a coordinated enterprise or plan." READ MORE: Clarence Thomas cut off contact with man he raised 'as a son' — now he faces decades in prison In 2023, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Davide Cay Johnston commented that it was possible Thomas could face " criminal prosecution " by not paying taxes on the previously undisclosed gifts from Crow and others. He opined that any lower-level court judge would not be able to avoid the charges if they failed to pay taxes on gifts worth millions of dollars. "What Clarence Thomas has done would result in not only any judges in America being removed from the bench, but there is a good chance it would result in criminal prosecution for income tax fraud and for false filings in his mandatory financial ethics disclosure statements," Johnston said in December. Last month, anti-corruption watchdog group Fix the Court totaled Thomas' gifts and found that the conservative jurist had received approximately $4 million in gifts dating back to 2004 – far more than any other justice on the Supreme Court. And of the 193 gifts Thomas received, he only listed 27 on his required financial disclosure reports. Click here to read Whitehouse and Wyden's full letter to Garland. The global outage impacted a raft of Australian companies and government agencies, causing many computers to attempt to restart and display a blue-screen error message. Here's what we know so far. What is CrowdStrike?CrowdStrike is a US-based cybersecurity firm that helps companies manage their security in "IT environments" — that is, everything they use an internet connection to access. Its primary function is to protect companies and stop data breaches, ransomware and cyber attacks. It includes among its main customers global investment banks, universities and even the Australian betting agency TAB Corp. The cybersecurity environment has changed rapidly in recent years due to the increased presence of threat actors targeting big business, including Ticketmaster, Medibank and Optus. As a result, more and more companies are turning towards firms like CrowdStrike to protect their customers' information. What is CrowdStrike used for?One of the company's main products is CrowdStrike Falcon, which is described on its website as "providing real-time indicators of attack, hyper-accurate detection and automated protection" from possible cybersecurity threats. CrowdStrike Falcon is used by thousands of companies across the world to protect data, and a software update released on Friday caused a global outage of Microsoft products. Earlier this week, CrowdStrike announced an update of its Falcon product, saying it would provide "unprecedented speed and precision" to detect security breaches. In a statement posted to its website following the outage, a CrowdStrike spokesperson said it was likely an issue with the Falcon product that caused the incident. Who owns CrowdStrike? The company was founded by former McAfee employee George Kurtz in 2012. Its ownership structure is a mix of individual investors, institutions and retail. ![yacht called opera A smiling man in a blue and black checkered suit with a white pocket](https://live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au/0edde41eafddf4f7525b3d925aaa754e?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&cropH=563&cropW=845&xPos=78&yPos=0&width=862&height=575) The company's stock is broken down into two large investor categories. About 40 per cent is owned by institutional investors, and about 57 per cent is owned by public companies and individual investors. The investor with the largest share is The Vanguard Group, a US investment fund, with about 6.79 per cent of the company. The question of who owns CrowdStrike was part of a discredited conspiracy theory after the company investigated Russia's role in the 2016 US elections. Former US president Donald Trump made reference to the conspiracy theory in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019. "I would like to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say CrowdStrike. I guess you have one of your wealthy people," he said. "The server, they say Ukraine has it … you or your people, and I would like you to get to the bottom of it." What's next for the company?Developer websites have already begun posting workarounds for the issue, and CrowdStrike the company offered a solution on its members-only platform until the incident resolves. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz released a statement on X on Friday evening, saying the outage was caused by a "defect" in a content update for Microsoft users. He stressed it was not caused by a cyber attack. Earlier, Reuters said those who phoned the company were met with a pre-recorded message. "Thanks for contacting CrowdStrike support. CrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows … related to the Falcon sensor." - X (formerly Twitter)

RNC Day 4: Trump Blasts Biden And Nancy Pelosi—Despite Promised ‘Unity’ Theme- Share to Facebook

Former President Donald Trump described the assassination attempt against him and ripped his political enemies in his speech Thursday at the Republican National Convention, despite saying previously the speech would emphasize unity and de-emphasize attacks on President Joe Biden in the wake of the Saturday’s shooting. Balloons fall after Donald Trump accepted his party's nomination on Thursday. Trump—whose campaign told ABC News he rewrote his speech in the wake of Saturday’s shooting to focus on “unity”—bookended the speech with calls for unity, but the address was mostly dedicated to his standard rally topics like inflation and immigration, interspersed with criticisms of the Biden administration. The former president called for the remaining criminal cases against him to be dropped: “Democrats want to unify our country . . . they should drop these partisan witch hunts.” Trump also referenced “crazy Nancy Pelosi” and made a hammering gesture, “boom, boom, boom,” apparently using a physical metaphor to describe attacks against Republicans (Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was attacked with a hammer inside the couple’s San Francisco home in October 2022). Straying again from the unity theme, Trump said “we have totally incompetent leadership” and “under the current administration, we are indeed a nation in decline,” Trump said, adding that Democrats are only “fierce . . . when it comes to cheating on elections and a couple other things” (there is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election). Trump said the “10 worst presidents in the history of the United States . . . they will not have done the damage that Biden has done,” promising he would only use Biden’s name once before saying it again immediately after saying he wouldn’t. Trump repeatedly promised to strengthen border security and referenced high-profile crimes in which the suspects are reportedly undocumented immigrants, referring to the surge in border arrests as an “invasion”: “terrorists are coming in in numbers that we’ve never seen before,” Trump said, repeating a baseless claim he often makes, vowing, “I will not let these killers and criminals into this country.” Trump described the assassination attempt against him on Saturday at the top of his speech, thanking Americans for their “outpouring of love and support” and recounting how “the assassin’s bullet came within a quarter-inch of taking my life.” The former president said he “felt something hit [him] really, really hard” on his right ear and said to himself “‘wow what was that? it can only be a bullet . . . I immediately knew it was very serious, that we were under attack.” Trump said the crowd at his rally in Pennsylvania appeared “confused, because they thought I was dead, and there was great sorry,” so he raised his right hand to let them know he was OK.” Trump held a moment of silence for Corey Comperatore, 50, the former fire chief who was killed in the rally and whose uniform was displayed on stage during Trump’s speech—Trump called him an “unbelievable person, everybody tells me.” The former president said he also spoke to the other two people who were shot Saturday and survived, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. Ahead of Trump’s speech, Melania Trump, wearing a red skirt suit, entered the arena to classical music before taking her seat in Trump’s box—though she is not expected to speak, unlike at previous conventions. Trump thanked his wife during his speech, telling the crowd he was “deeply honored to be joined by [his] amazing wife, Melania.” Surprising FactTrump spoke for nearly 90 minutes, breaking the record he set previously for the longest convention speech in history at the 2016 RNC in Cleveland, when he spoke for an hour and 15 minutes, Politico noted . Crucial Quote“I’m not supposed to be here tonight, I’m not supposed to be here . . . I stand here only by the grace of almighty God,” Trump said, to which the crowd chanted “yes you are, yes you are.” Ahead of Trump’s speech, Melania made her debut just before Kid Rock performed and Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White took the stage to introduce Trump, telling the crowd “I know President Trump is a proven leader, a fearless leader, and this country was in a much better place when he was in the Oval Office.” Trump’s son Eric Trump also spoke, painting a bleak picture of America under President Joe Biden. Retired professional wrestler Hulk Hogan gave a rousing speech, chock full of wrestling analogies, at one point performing his signature move of ripping off his T-shirt with his hands to reveal a “Trump-Vance” shirt underneath, as the crowd chanted “USA, USA.” Hogan—who retired from wrestling in 2012 and has largely stayed out of the 2024 election until now but endorsed former President Barack Obama previously—gave a full-throated endorsement of Trump, calling him a “hero” and a “gladiator” and calling his supporters “real Americans.” Earlier, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson received some of the loudest applause of the night. Former First Lady Melania Trump arrives. Professional wrestler Hulk Hogan speaks during the final day of the Republican National Convention. Kid Rock performs during the final day of the Republican National Convention. Dana White, CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship, speaks. What To Watch ForTrump rewrote his speech in the wake of the assassination attempt to focus less on attacking President Joe Biden and more on a message of unity, he told The Washington Examiner over the weekend. “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together,” Trump said. Key BackgroundTrump’s speech comes as the presidential race could undergo another drastic change in the coming days as some top Democrats expect President Joe Biden will end his reelection bid following the backlash from his June 27 debate performance, Axios reported . Trump will accept the nomination Thursday as he has widened his lead over Biden to three points—a 1.5-point increase since the June 27 debate, according to RealClearPolitics’ polling average . The speech also came after Ohio Sen. JD Vance made his national debut as his running mate at the convention Wednesday, delivering a speech that leaned heavily on his Rust Belt roots in an appeal to Midwestern voters. Tuesday’s convention line-up featured several ex-Trump foes, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who endorsed Trump for the first time since she ran against him in this year’s GOP primary. Further ReadingWhat Time Is Trump Speaking? This week, we’re running through the big moments and trends from the Republican National Convention. (Did a friend forward this to you, or are you seeing this on the website? If so, sign up for this newsletter here . And make sure to check out the Campaign Moment podcast .) The big momentThe 2024 GOP convention came to a close Thursday night, with former president Donald Trump formally accepting his party’s nomination just five days after surviving an assassination attempt. But even that story wasn’t necessarily the biggest of Thursday, as the potential exit of the opponent Republicans had spent four days attacking — President Biden — loomed larger and larger . Here’s our final set of takeaways from the convention week that was. 1. A tale of two Trump speeches: powerful and perplexing The first 15 minutes of Trump’s speech were powerful, as he recounted Saturday’s assassination attempt. The rest of the more than 90-minute-long speech was thoroughly confusing. It meandered between points, often going off-script with ad-libs that left a standard-issue Trump campaign speech without the kind of coherent, lofty theme that defines traditional presidential convention fare. And Trump’s initially subdued manner and calls for unity didn’t match the content of an often-divisive speech. Trump grabbed the audience with a promise to discuss what happened Saturday, but qualified it by saying he would only do it once, “because it’s actually too painful to tell.” He celebrated slain firefighter Corey Comperatore and two others who were shot. Perhaps the most powerful moment came when Trump said, “I’m not supposed to be here tonight.” The crowd began chanting, “Yes you are!” Trump ultimately responded, “Thank you, but I’m not.” “Despite such a heinous attack, we unite this evening more determined than ever,” Trump wrapped up that section. “I am more determined than ever. So are you. So is everybody. … Our resolve is unbroken, and our purpose is unchanged.” Also unchanged: Virtually the rest of his speech, undifferentiated from a normal Trump stump speech. Despite the call for unity, Trump soon referred to “crazy Nancy Pelosi,” repeatedly cited false allegations of stolen elections, called for the firing of the head of the United Auto Workers, cited the “China virus” and the “invasion” at the Southern border. He called a Democratic senator a “total lightweight.” He even repeated a puzzling allusion to “ the late, great Hannibal Lecter ,” from “The Silence of the Lambs,” which he’s used before. All of it was familiar from Trump’s speeches — as was the extensive ad-libbing. But this wasn’t just any Trump speech. This was a different venue, his introduction to many more casual voters who might not eat up his many musings. The assassination attempt probably drew even more eyeballs to him, and it’s not clear what those new viewers took away, beyond that Trump was nearly killed five days ago. “So I’d better finish strong,” Trump said at one point. “Otherwise we’ll blow it. And we can’t let that happen.” 2. Republicans trolled Democrats on replacing Biden As Democrats appeared to inch closer to replacing their 2024 standard-bearer, Republicans decided now would be a good time to stir the pot. Previously, some high-profile Republicans made clear their preference for facing Biden and began attacking Vice President Harris more . But Wednesday, their move was to try to stoke Democratic divisions, casting any attempt to replace the nominee as a brazen and even undemocratic one. Top Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, at a CNN/Politico event, called it an attempted “coup” and an effort to “ depose ” Biden “that’s going to create a whole host of different issues.” At another event, former Trump acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell called efforts to switch nominees “ outrageous ” and urged the media to declare that “you don’t get to dump this [president]. This is what happens in other countries, not in America.” On X, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) labeled it an “ insurrection .” None of these descriptions actually fit; Democrats are trying to persuade Biden to drop out, not overturn the primary results themselves. But as the Biden loyalists get a little quieter , there’s certainly value for Republicans in framing things this way in hopes of riling them (or perhaps even Biden) up. At the very least, Republicans seemed to be having some fun trolling Democrats over their discord. 3. They leaned in on the assassination attempt — and maybe God’s favoritism Trump wasn’t the only one to focus extensively on the assassination attempt. Speakers repeatedly pitched it and Trump’s response as evidence of Trump’s resolve, courage — and possibly even God’s will that he be president. Eric Trump focused on it, calling Trump “a man who survived a bullet that was intended to eliminate him permanently from our future and from our family.” “You wiped the blood off your face,” Eric Trump said. “And you put your fist in the air, in a moment that will be remembered as one of the most courageous acts in the history of American politics.” Trump lawyer Alina Habba said Trump “did not just take a bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania. He has and will continue to take them for each and every one of us.” While other Trump supporters have posited that God intervened to save Trump, a couple of speakers seemed to go a little further to suggest it showed God’s favoritism. Evangelical leader Franklin Graham, unlike many others pointing to possible divine intervention, noted that firefighter Corey Comperatore was not spared. “I cannot explain why God would save one life and allow another one to be taken,” Graham said. “I don’t have the answer for that.” Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested that he did have that answer. “When he stood up after being shot in the face, bloodied, and put his hand up, I thought at that moment that was a transformation. This was no longer a man. Well, I think that I think it was divine intervention,” Carlson said, adding: “This was the leader of a nation.” Carlson added: “I think a lot of people are wondering, what is this? This doesn’t look like politics. Something bigger is going on here. I think even people who don’t believe in God are beginning to think, well, maybe there’s something to this, actually.” Take a moment to read:- “ What happens if Biden drops out of the presidential race? ” (Washington Post)
- “ Pelosi has told House Democrats that Biden may soon be persuaded to exit race ” (Washington Post)
- “ Obama tells allies Biden’s path to winning reelection has greatly diminished ” (Washington Post)
- “ The right is attacking the Secret Service’s women agents. Trump hasn’t joined in. ” (Politico)
- “ Pelosi, Long Fixated on Winning, Is in No Mood to Lose With Biden ” (New York Times)
