Dr. Vanderyajt is very professional, soft spoken, and gives a very thorough exam. I was beyond pleased with my experience.

I've been going to Dr. Vanderyajt for years. He's very professional and I appreciate being able to get a quick appointment on a Saturday morning. Plus, barely had to wait in the waiting room. I wear progressives, which can be difficult to get used to, but they did a good job of explaining them. And, I like that they always have trendy glasses.

Gary VanderYacht

After graduation he spent three years in the U.S. Army where he received the Distinguished Service Award. From there he went to the University of Washington and graduated from Dental School in 1965.  

He was President of his Freshman class in Dental School and after graduation he taught at the University full time in 1965-66 and part time from 1966-73 while starting his Dental Practice in Lynden.  

He became very involved in the Lynden Community being Director of Programs in the Kiwanis Club, President of the Jaycees, and President of the Lynden School Board.

In 1976, Gary and his wife Grace moved to Fairbanks Alaska and worked for the Teamsters Dental Clinic during the pipeline days where Gary became the director of the clinic. They enjoyed the beauty of Alaska and did a lot of riverboat fishing, entertaining many family and friends who came to visit.

In 1993, Gary semi-retired and they moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they did a lot of golfing until 2000 when their granddaughter Megan was born and he babysat her a lot including home schooling her in seventh grade and taking her to her swim meets.

Gary enjoyed a lot of hobbies. He raised rabbits for show, restored a 1963 Comet Convertible, collected baseball cards, model cars and N gauge trains. He enjoyed working in his wood shop making many beautiful bowls and restoring many pieces of furniture. He grew a community garden at the church and brought lots of produce to a homeless shelter and he also enjoyed reading many books.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ron VanderYacht, in-laws Herman and Frieda VanderMey, brother and sister-in-law Sid and Greta VanderMey, and sister-in-law Cheryl DeWaard.

Gary is survived by his loving wife Grace, sons Dean (Christine)VanderYacht, Duane VanderYacht and David (Vonda) VanderYacht all of Lynden and Step-sons Terry Klander and Aaron Klander of Phoenix. His grandchildren are Natalie Almquust, Michelle (Brandon) Zoerink, Bryce (Katie) VanderYacht, TJ and Brenna VanderYacht and Megan and Paul Klander. Great Grandchildren are Jackson, Andi, Makenzie and Rylan. Brothers-in-law Harry (Sue) VanderMey, James (Cheryl) VanderMey and Chuck DeWaard.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date this Summer in Lynden at Gary’s request.

Dr. Andy Vander Yacht currently manages the forest ecology laboratory and teaches classes on ecosystem services (FOR 110) and wildland fire ecology and management (FOR 413). His research seeks to understand how disturbances affect the structure, composition, health, and resiliency of temperate forest ecosystems and how this knowledge can inform forest management. His specific interests include forest mesophication, fire and fuel ecology, community succession, seed dispersal, and the restoration of disturbance-dependent biodiversity. He is currently exploring oak regeneration success and Reid’s Paradox within red pine plantations in Michigan, and the potential for red pine to oak conversions to mitigate climate-change effects on regional forest resources. He also manages and analyzes long-term data sets on temperate (Huron-Manistee National Forest) and tropical (La Selva, Costa Rica) forest regeneration and is a key contributor to MSU’s Urban WildF.I.R.E.  program. He currently serves as the chair for the Michigan Prescribed Fire Council . Before coming to MSU, Andy gained applied experience with the MI DNR, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and as a private land management consultant.

How your pet may react to the solar eclipse

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — We know that we need to view the eclipse safely, but do our pets know that?

Of course, animals don’t normally look at the sun, but do pet owners have anything to be concerned with during the eclipse?

“They (your pets) might perceive the change in the amount of sunshine as maybe an impending storm,” says Dr. Jillian VanderYacht, a veterinarian from Manlius Veterinary Hospital. “So if you have a dog that super sensitive that maybe is already on medication for storms, maybe deciding to give them their medication like you normally would for some kind of a thunderstorm.”

Dr. VanderYacht says pet owners shouldn’t have much to worry about when it comes to your pet looking directly at the sun. “The good news is, I think our animals have a little bit more self preservation than humans do.  They’re not going to be so inclined and interested to necessarily stare at the sun like we are going to be really interested in watching the eclipse.”

PJ Trainham, of Chaumont in Jefferson County and dog owner who will be in the path of totality at his home along the river isn’t too concerned about how his own dog will react to the eclipse, but rather other dogs in a group setting. “It’ll be strange, but it’ll be a good idea for their dogs to be with their owners. So good luck to everybody,” said Trainham.
