Trailerability is the key to this motorsailer.

H ere is a trailerable pocket cruiser that is built in Ventura, California, and designed by Heraldo Ruesch. It’s a lot of boat in 23 feet and has been designed to perform both under sail and with a large outboard motor. It’s a type that has gained some popularity.  

The hull is designed to provide the biggest reasonable box for the accommodations without killing the performance. There is a chine and the hull shape is a bit of a hybrid sailboat/motor boat shape.  

The D/L including the 660 pounds of water ballast is 115. If I go with the “power configuration” meaning no water ballast, the D/L is 90. The L/B is 2.78. Fixed ballast is 220 pounds and there is another 110 pounds of ballast in the centerboard. Twin rudders leave room for the large outboard. Draft with the board down is 4 feet 6 inches and board up is 11 inches.

The layout is interesting and uses arcs to define the geometry of the components. It looks good on the mini drawing  I was given, but there is only so much I can see at that scale. There is an athwartships double berth tucked under the forward end of the cockpit. There is a very small head to port. Remember, if you do not have 22 inches from the edge of toilet bowl to door you cannot sit down and close the door. Next time you fly take your tape measure into the plane’s head. 

To starboard is another arc that I think is a settee, and another to port. The drop-leaf table hinges off the daggerboard trunk. Forward to starboard is a small galley. There is a double V-berth forward but the toe end comes to a point. It would work for kids. There’s only so much you can do in a boat this size. The designer has tried hard to make this work in an appealing manner.

I like the look of this boat. It’s a bit stubby, but that is what you get with an LOA of 23 feet. The styling is well done and the cockpit looks roomy. The SA/D is 20. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for one of these boats. I’d like to see one in person.

Ventura Harbor over Channel Islands?

Hi all, I am moving up in boat size and need to get another slip. My current boat is in Channel Islands Harbor which I like a lot. Ventura Harbor is just up the road, so I thought I might look at that as a possible docking place as well. Does anybody have any opinions about Ventura Harbor? What I like about Channel Islands is that it is a sleepy marina. That is, when I sail mid-week, I am often one of the only boats moving in the harbor. On the other hand, there is not a lot to do in the CI marina. My wife and I are also considering joining a yacht club to expand our circle of friends that sail. Any advice or input on yacht clubs in either of these harbors? Thanks, Bill  

My boat , a Catalina 30, is also docked at Channel Islands. When I bought the boat 15 months ago, It was docked in Ventura. The Ventura harbor has a better Village with more stores, more restaraunts and weekend entertainment. Ventura appears to have lower slip fees. The problem with Ventura is that it smells bad. There is a sewage trearment plant next to the harbor. When the wind blows the right (wrong!) direction the harbor stinks. In the morning when I took an overnight to Ventura, we were woken up by the smell. By 8:30 the wind picked up and the smell disapated. Form that point on it was great but that was not the way to start the day. The entrance can be tricky in big seas and you get some blowing sand in big winds. The dealbreaker for us was the smell. Where in Channel Island are you. I am in Anacapa Isle by the Hampton Inn. AW  

I moved to Ventura from LA about year ago. For the first few months we were at VWM, Phase 1. In the mornings and during the Santa Ana's we had to deal with the smell, not so much from the turd laundry but from the brackish brine in the stagnant area of the marina. We also got a lot of dirt onto the boat from the strawberry fields. We have been on the West side of the marina the past few months and the smell isn't noticable. Now we have a beach party every weekend with all the sand that blows on deck. Sand is still better than the industrial fallout and soot we had to deal with in LA. Ventura is a nice harbor with a great boat yard (Ventura Harbour Boatyard) but all of the destinations from here are at least a full days sail away. We sailed down to CI for the 4th but aside from that there isn't much to do there. From CI you can sail the 5-8 miles up to Ventura and hang at the Village or do the comedy club, stay in a guest slip and sail back the next day. Just my .02  

Ventura Marina Been in the Ventura Marina for about 5 years. Quiet. Clean restrooms & showers. Maintained well. Dust from the farms in the Santana winds. I'm close to Catalina Sales and wouldn't trade. Islands are about 3-4 hours away. Pat

The 2008-built MS Ventura cruise ship is one of the Grand-class P&O UK liners, with sistership MS Azura .

The vessel (IMO number 9333175) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310562000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

P&O Cruises is a subsidiary company and two brands owned by Carnival Corporation - P&O UK and P&O Australia. In 2000, P&O Cruises became subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003. P and O is the world's oldest cruise company, starting passenger shipping operations in 1822 on the routes connecting England with Iberia.

The 3100-passenger ship Ventura was christened in Port Southampton on April 16, 2008, by the famous British actress Dame Helen Mirren (assisted by a team of Royal Marine Commandos). The liner is particularly larger - by 30 % than any other vessel in the P&O Cruises fleet. This means there's more room for contemporary facilities, like expanded children-related amenities, recreational opportunities (bungee jumping) and different restaurants. What is more, it is difficult to find any sign of traditional P&O Cruises in the hardware - no card room, nowhere to have a sit in the library, no art auctions (all the pictures are on sale, but showed with the price) and no monotonous teak-and-cream coloring (there are cheery decor and modern artwork instead). The travelers are also distinct; still quite a lot of the retired cruisers that P&O Cruises is known for attracting, but also lots of families with kids.

Decks and Cabins

P&O Ventura staterooms (1556 total, in 35 grades) include 26x Suites, 853x Balconies, 223x Oceanviews, 434x Inside, 2x Family Suites, 18x Studios (single-occupancy cabins). Most cabins are sized 165 ft2 / 15 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 45 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest passenger accommodations are the Aft Penthouse Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The quality of food aboard Ventura is of a high standard for such a big ship. The menus offered in the three main dining rooms change daily, and there is a Gala Menu on formal nights as well, put together by Marco Pierre White. Cinnamon and Saffron (two of the main dining rooms) offer 'Freedom Dining', meaning that guests can turn up anytime between 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and dine where and with whom they like. Bay Tree is the third MDR and offers set-time dining called "Club Dining" by the line. There are 3 specialty restaurants, 2 formal ones - Epicurean, serving molecular gastronomy cuisine and Sindhu by Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar. The one informal restaurant, which proved popular on sister vessel Azura and replaced Las Ramblas, is The Glass House by wine expert Olly Smith (for-fee tapas-style restaurant).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

P&O company doesn't go in for huge West End-style productions. Instead, expect revue-type shows with an emphasis on the singing talents of the performer; ventriloquists, magicians, and tribute acts; British comedy. In the Arena Theatre, there are two main shows nightly. Times vary in order to accommodate the set dining times. Elsewhere on the ship, the main venues for live entertainment are Havana, at the back of the ship, and The Tamarind Club - a walk-through venue on Deck 7. In both these venues, guests will find bands or singers on at various times throughout the whole evening. There is usually a guest band too, depending on where the vessel is based. Havana is also the nightclub onboard ms Ventura. Additional amenities include: Complimentary 24-hour Room-Service, Internet/WiFi access, supervised kids program, laundry/self-serve laundromats.

The ship also used to operated Caribbean fly-cruises from Bridgetown Barbados , with Transatlantic repositioning crossings UK-Caribbean. Ex-Southampton voyages in Europe visit ports in Iberia (Portugal and Spain), Mediterranean, Canary Islands, as well as mini-cruises to Holland, Belgium, Germany. Transatlantic crossings (UK roundtrip voyages) also visit the USA and Canada and the Caribbean, with longer itineraries (30-40-days in length).

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built MS Ventura is one of PO's biggest vessels and also one of the biggest UK-based passenger ships, with sistership Azura (both of the Grand-Class). The ship was christened by Helen Mirren (1945-born British actress) who also sailed on the Inaugural Cruise/maiden voyage on April 11, 2008.

P&O Ventura (Monfalcone shipyard/hull number 6132) is powered by Wartsila marine diesel engines (models 8ZAV40S and 8L46C) generating total power output 67,22 MW.

Besides being a huge vessel as size and passenger capacity , Ventura is also one of the most family-friendly UK ships. Family fun activities at dedicated facilities on board are: "The Reef" (with kids club programming), Noddy (character greetings), open-air kids playing areas, "Beachcomber" and "Laguna" (family pools), "The Beach House" (casual family restaurant for dinner) and Havana Lounge (evening family shows).

During the whole summer of 2014, for the first time, P&O operated Ventura with exclusively fly-cruises to the Mediterranean from the UK. During winter, the liner offers Caribbean cruises from homeport Bridgetown Barbados , also operated with fly-cruise deals from UK ( Southampton England ). P&O UK's "flight and cruise" deals to the Caribbean are additionally inclusive of discounted airfare to and from Barbados.

The ship's current Captain (Master) is Paul Brown.

MS Ventura refurbishments review

The ship's drydock in 2018 (March 13-27, done by Damen Shiprepairs in Brest France ) resulted in the following changes:

The onboard retail shopping was upgraded by refurbishing all retail shops and adding new brands. The 2-tier Arena Theatre received a large, wall-mounted LED screen (similar to that on Azura), as well as a new sound and light equipment. Two bar lounges (Tamarind Club and Havana) were renovated and redesigned.

All passenger cabins and most public areas (the Atrium, Spa and Salon complex, all restaurants, lounges, and bars) were renovated with new carpeting. The main walkway area received new tiling, new carpet, new furniture.

New retail brands were added to the onboard shopping options selling premium watches, handbags, cosmetics and perfumes, travel essentials. New is the Dufry store (travel retailer). All the shops were completely renovated. Among the newly added brands are BRICS (luggage, bags, Selfridges), Longines (Swiss hand-made watches), Olivia Burton (watches, V), Liu Jo (women's clothes, bags, shoes), Radley (designer leather handbags, purses, accessories), Cath Kidston (fashion, bags, gifts), Kipling (designer bags, backpacks, luggage, wallets, travel accessories). A new collection of British gins was also added. To the shops on Deck 7 was added a large glass display window.

During the drydock refit were also refurbished the Waterside (24-hour buffet restaurant) and The Beach House (Select Dining restaurant).

Dixons Travel shop (deck 7) sells the latest technology gadgets and electronic equipment. During the refurbishment, the store's size was increased and new products were added, including by the brands Amazon, Apple, Bose, Canon, Fitbit, GoPro). The Photo Now (digital screen) was moved to the aft.

During drydock 2018, on the boat were installed 2 scrubbers (reducing fuel emissions and energy consumption). The hull was water blasted and painted with a new type of silicone paint (improving fuel efficiency). Also repainted was the liner's superstructure. Maintenance works included the vessel's propulsion, stabilizers, some repairs.

The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 2013 drydock (at Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg Germany ) includes:

• (Deck 5) - new Atrium entertainment programme – now with a dance floor (also for lessons) and live band music at night. Internet Cafe was transformed into the Library, while the old library was refitted into a perfume shop.
• (Deck 6) - 18 new single cruise cabins, of which 12 oceanview and 6 Interior), at no single supplement rates.
• (Deck 7) - The Glass House (wine bar) replacing the Ramblas (Latin specialty restaurant)
• (Deck 7) - East (Asian specialty restaurant by Atul Kochhar, with new Southeast Asia menu.
• (Deck 17) - The Retreat (outdoor adults-only spa terrace).
• Better (shipwide) Wi-Fi coverage.

Grenada charges prison escapees with murder of American couple missing since alleged yacht hijacking

(CNN) — Three inmates who escaped from prison in Grenada have been charged with killing two Americans after allegedly hijacking their yacht last month to flee to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, police said Thursday.

The Royal Granada Police Force said in a statement  that Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanisclaus and Trevon Robertson were each charged with two counts of capital murder over the presumed deaths of Americans Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel.

The three suspects have also been charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus was separately charged with one count of rape.

The latest police update did not make clear who Stanislaus is accused of raping and did not provide information on whether the bodies of the couple had been recovered.

Hendry and Brandel, based in Virginia, were living out a long-held dream of cruising the Caribbean in their sailing yacht called Simplicity, to Antigua when they went missing, according to their  yacht club, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association.

Their vessel was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on February 21, with the husband and wife nowhere to be found, the yacht club said.

Authorities in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines launched joint investigations to track down the suspects who allegedly left behind a violent scene on the missing couple’s yacht, including blood stains.

Last week, Grenada police commissioner Don McKenzie said in a news conference the couple was likely thrown overboard during the hijacking, and information suggests the escapees “disposed of the occupants” while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, about 80 miles away.

Their alleged killers committed “several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple” while sailing, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said last week. When authorities eventually recovered the yacht, the scene was “consistent with signs of violence,” the police force said.

All three suspects made their first court appearance in St. George’s Magistrate’s Court in Grenada on Thursday and were remanded to prison. They are due back in court on March 27.

CNN has reached out to the police for more information.

‘They brought light’

The couple’s disappearance has left family and loved ones reeling.

Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, and Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, released a joint statement last month, remembering their parents for living with love, faith and sailing.

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts,” the statement read.

“If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

Buro and Bryan Hendry called their parents the strongest people they will ever know, saying they “strive to be even half as wonderful as them.”

“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” the statement read.

Buro said his mother and stepfather were veteran boaters who had been planning the trip – their first cruise of the Caribbean – for years.

“They were super careful to be safe all the time,” Buro said. “Everywhere they went everything they did, safety was their top, top concern. So this unfortunate accident, I think, it came out of nowhere for them.”

The couple sold their home and bought Simplicity years ago, throwing themselves into an enthralling life on the water, he said.

“It was their home. Everything they had, they owned, was on that boat. It was their life,” he said. “Kathy worked her whole life and then retired. Ralph worked in financial services and continued to work from the boat. But really what they did was … choose a lifestyle that most of us would never imagine could be done. And they loved every minute of it and they saw many parts of the world and just lived a life of joy and love.”
