Catamarans have a wide beam, instead of a ballasted keel like a monohull vessel, which provides its steadiness. It has a more shallow draft and smaller displacement than a monohull with a similar length. Its hull offers stability, more space, privacy, no heeling, lower hydrodynamic resistance, and more.

What Are Catamarans And Their History?

Catamarans are boats with two connected hulls that are joined by a bridge. Because they are faster, more stable, and capable of carrying larger cargo than their monohull counterparts, catamarans are growing in popularity.

As a result, designers and owners have greater freedom to accommodate space needs in terms of size and usefulness than they would with single-hulled vessels.

The name catamaran came from the Tamil word “kattumaram” which basically meant “logs which were bound together”. These traditional watercraft were basically used on the south coast of India and Srilanka. They were dated back to as early as the 5th century when they were used to transport troops from one island to another.

Let us get into more details to learn more about the different types of catamarans and their functions.

What are the different types of catamarans?

Catamarans are mainly divided into two categories: sailing and power catamarans, however, both categories can be split into smaller groups by their size and use.

Sailing catamarans

performance, yet desire high daily averages and passage times, which should be as short as possible. When choosing a large multihull, sailors look, above all else, for safety and comfort, long before the consideration for flat-out speed comes into the discussion. Nevertheless, performance is a highly important design consideration. No catamaran sailor wants to sail slower than a same length ballasted keelboat. Below are some EVALUATION & COEFFICIENTS useful coefficients, which will help compare monohulls and multihulls objectively.

Various multihull characteristics and design features can be expressed in mathematical formulas. Their results are crucial and will give prospective owners a basis of comparison between different types of catamarans. These numbers are important, as they eliminate ambiguity and clearly display various advantages or concessions of a design, which would be hard to quantify any other way. Mathematical coefficients not only will provide insight into a boat's performance in varying conditions, they also reflect concerns about loads to be carried safely, speed and stability.

We have already mentioned the Displacement/Length and Sail Area/ Displacement ratio in our chapter on Multihull Advantages, illustrating the point of a multihull's efficiency. Let's look at some other coefficients that give us an indication of a boat's performance.

What is performance and how do we really measure it? Most people who buy a cruising catamaran are not really interested in racing

The Bruce Number is very similar to the Sail Area to Displacement ratio although the formula is slightly different. It is the square root of the sail area in feet, divided by the cube root of the boat's displacement in pounds:

SA = upwind sail area (mainsail and 100% jib)

Displ = weight of the boat in pounds

Similar to the Sail Area to Displacement ratio, the higher the coefficient the faster the boat and better is its performance in light air. Typically a BN of 1.1 will be the threshold between fast and more sluggish multihulls. A heavy displacement monohull might have a BN of .7, whereas a modern cruising catamaran shows a BN of 1.3. Offshore multihull racers can have BNs of 2.0 and higher. The BN will also tell us about a catamaran's ability to withstand stronger winds before reefing. A boat with a higher BN is usually overcanvassed in strong conditions and will have to be reefed earlier than one with a lower coefficient.

On the other hand, they will be able to produce more "power" than their counterparts in lighter winds and perform better.

Sail Area to Wetted Surface (SAWS)

SA/WS = Sail Area Wetted Surface Coefficient

SA = upwind sail area

WS = total underwater surface area (hull and appendages)

This formula simply divides the upwind sail area of the boat (mainsail and 100% jib) by the wetted surface. This coefficient will give us a statistical indication of the multihull's lightair performance since in low wind conditions skin friction becomes an important factor. Monohulls can have coefficients of at least 7% more than multihulls.

Hull Fineness Ratio (HFR)

The Hull Fineness Ratio, known as the hull's beam-to-length ratio, is an interesting number. It is derived by simply dividing the waterline length of the hull by the waterline beam of the hull.

Monohulls, when compared to multihulls, have low hull/fineness ratios. In Part 1 of this

book, discussing "Efficiency," we saw that ballasted keelboats are limited to Archimedes' principle of hull speed (1.34 x VWL). Multihulls do not have these theoretical barriers, because their hulls are narrower.

The thinner the hull the faster it will be able to travel through the water. But, attention! It will also carry less unless you are on a mega cat. Typically, a 40' cruising catamaran's HFR will range from 8:1 to 10:1. Dennis Conner's above While sailing under spinnaker and experiencing virtually no roll at all, guests will always find a comfortable spot to relax on the foredeck, an impossibility on a monohull.

There are various methods of calculating the transverse stability of a catamaran. One of the simplest and most utilized techniques is establishing a relationship between the height of the Center of Effort (CE), displacement, beam and sail area. Multihull designer, James Wharram added safety factors of 20% to compensate for gusts and the dynamic environment of the ocean. Another method is described in the text below.

racing cat "Stars and Stripes" had a 16:1 HFR. Of course, the larger the boat, the narrower the hulls will become in comparison to its length. For example, the HFR of a 100' luxury catamaran may be 12:1, providing it with a high speed potential. However, monohulls can show HFRs of 3:1, though the comparison is complicated as their angle of heel affects the measurement.

One has to be very careful when analyzing the Hull Fineness Ratio of a cruising catamaran, because other factors such as the actual shape of the hull cross sections (Prismatic Coefficient, PC) can throw the analysis off balance. Go-fast sailors like to think that fine hulls are always fast. That is not necessarily true because a slim hull could have a large underwater volume, thus slowing it down. Consequently, a wide waterline-beam hull could have less drag than a narrower one. It could have a shallow underbody (low PC), which would be beneficial to load carrying (Pounds Per Inch Immersion Number, PPI) and early surfing characteristics at speed.

Stability Coefficient (SC)

This mathematical formula has been devised by the distinguished catamaran designer and sailor James Wharram and his team. This coefficient analyzes a multihull's ability (in a static environment) to resist capsizing due to wind.

Boa = Beam overall

This formula will tell us how much wind it will take to overturn our multihull. By instinct we will know that a catamaran with a wide stance and a conservative sail plan will be very stable offshore. The SC formula will inevitably illustrate that a wider beamed catamaran with a tall sail plan will be as resistant to wind induced capsize as a short-rigged, narrower boat. This is not so if one considers the chaotic environment of waves and the real world of heavy weather sailing. It is interesting to note that a wide beamed boat (regardless of the SC) is more resistant to capsize in seas due to the effects of a higher moment of inertia. In an open-ocean environment, which is everything but static, the SC formula has little meaning. Nevertheless, it serves as a good basis to evaluate stability as a factor of wind force.

Ship Hull Fineness

Wide hulls and a large overall beam will increase the overall righting moment of a catamaran. A word of caution: Excessive beam will reduce the fore and aft stability. Designers strive to compromise hull fineness ratios, place heavy weights towards the CG (Center of Gravity), and engineer hull and overall beam to achieve a seaworthy balance, which is safe, yet provides ample liveaboard accommodations.

Diagonal Stability & Beam-to-Length Ratio (BLR)

Stability of a multihull, or the resistance to capsize, should be seen as three components. Athwartship Stability is one well-publicized type and the one often talked about. The other much more important types are Fore and Aft and Diagonal Stability. Fore and aft stability is established by the relationship between the boat's waterline length and the distance between the hull centerlines. It will reflect the catamaran's resistance to tripping. This relationship should be in the vicinity of 39% to 42%. For a seaworthy cruising multihull it is important maintain the proper ratio between length and beam, which, in turn, balances equal amounts of athwartship with diagonal stability. The goal should be to prevent the possibility of a sudden discrepancy of powers between fore and aft and sideways resistance. Most of today's multihulls keep these two component forces in equilibrium, making them extremely seakindly and safe.

Some early design multihulls were very narrow, partly due to the material limitations of that time. But things have changed. Contemporary composite construction allows designers to build wider boats without compromising stiffness. Production catamarans of today have a wide stance and have the benefit of greater safety margins in gusty wind conditions than their older cousins. Multihulls are sophisticated structures and true modern miracles. They provide a more comfortable ride and more interior room. Thanks to modern materials they weigh less and perform better than catamarans built only 10 years ago.

Some catamarans, especially production boats, which are very popular in the charter fleets, are growing wider by the year. The businesses who rent these beamy monsters adore them. Lots of room plus open decks are ideal for clients and the bigger (wider) the boat, the more paying guests can share the fees. But there certainly is a limit as to how wide is too wide. Extreme beam can be dangerous. It can lead to instability fore and aft and to excessive bridgedeck slamming, as the relative distance from the bridge deck to the water will decrease with an increase in width. A vessel with excessive beam might seem stable athwartships, but it will compromise overall stability.

We know that multihulls can, in extreme cases of seamanship error in wild storms, be thrown over from any side - front, back and beam-on. The best examples of this phenomenon are racing multihulls, especially Formula 1 trimarans, which have fine hulls for speed and huge sailplans to provide driving power. They are initially extremely stable athwartships (High Beam-to-Length Ratio), but have a tendency to become unstable fore and aft. They will surf down waves and reach a point where the power of the sails, and speed, will exceed the ability to keep the bows out of the water and the boat will pitchpole. This is the reason why catamaran designers usually draw their multihulls with a Beam-to-Length relationship of between 50% and 55%. The longer the vessel the lower that percentage becomes.

I am currently involved in the "Gemini" project, which presents an example. It very well might become the world's largest sailing catamaran. She will have an overall length of 145 feet, yet her beam will "only" be 54.4'.

Stable Catamaran Dingy

Please, don't worry. "Gemini" will not be tender and tip over in the slightest breeze. Obviously there is a sweet spot in the beam vs. stability question. Designing too beamy a boat will also necessitate more freeboard to preserve bridgedeck clearance which, in turn, will increase windage and complicate maneuvering. Unless sophisticated aramid construction methods are utilized, more beam will also add more weight and stress to the structure. Adding more mass will, to a certain point, help make the boat more stable, but where do we stop? Is it better to add weight or width to make a boat stiffer? Of course, both characteristics are interrelated as a beamier boat normally is also heavier. Just adding weight to a catamaran simply to make her more stable will not pay off. Consequently, making a boat too wide might increase living space yet it will also burden the structure, require a beefier manufacture, and yield an even heavier boat. Needless to say, a boat which is too wide will also create practical restrictions such as maneuvering, the ability to haul the vessel and much higher building costs.

Beam has a great effect on bridgedeck clearance, which is one of the most vital characteristics of a good cruising catamaran. As standard practice, the well-known rule of 1" of bridgedeck clearance for each foot of beam was a safe way to prevent excessive wave slap. The wider the beam the more the relationship changes and the necessary height of 1" per foot of beam needs to be increased to 1.3" or more. In the extreme case of overly square boats, that number will have to be closer to 1.8" per foot of beam. This will have a negative effect on any seaworthy multihull that has a bridgedeck saloon. The wide beam will necessitate a high cabin sole to remain a safe distance from the waterline. In order to provide standing headroom, the coachroof might be higher than practical, which could result in a boxy, high-windage multihull. Not only will this be unattractive, but also raise the Center of Gravity (CG) which really should be kept as low as possible.

More overall beam on the other hand (given that there is still sufficient bridgedeck height) has a less known benefit, as it reduces the possibility of hull-wave interference, which is particularly important for fast designs. Ultimately, a boat's design has a major influence on its ability to stand against the forces of nature, and to keep occupants safe. Manufacturing excessively wide catamarans is like trying to market monohulls with super deep-draft keels. Both are totally impractical. We designers have to make sensible compromises and learn from past experiences of what has worked at sea by balancing the benefits of a wide boat with its disadvantages.

‍ Catamarans are some of the most well-regarded sailboats on the water, and they offer numerous handling advantages over monohulls. But how many hulls can a catamaran have?

All catamarans have two hulls arranged side-by-side. Catamaran hulls are separated by a gap that is many times wider than the hulls themselves. Outriggers, which have a large primary hull and a small outer hull, or sometimes considered catamarans as well.

In this article, we'll go over how many hulls a catamaran has, how they're configured, and how they compare to other common single and multihull boats. Additionally, we'll cover why catamarans are designed the way they are and go over the advantages and disadvantages of the catamaran design. We will also cover common lookalike vessels and how to distinguish them from catamarans.

‍ Catamaran Hull Configuration

The hull configuration of a catamaran is simple and easy to identify. Catamarans Have a wide stance and consist of two identically shaped narrow hulls connected at the tops. The hulls are an exact mirror of each other, and there's a large space or platform in between them that provides room for a cockpit, living spaces, and even a trampoline.

Catamarans vary widely in shape, size, and configuration. However, it's easy to spot a catamaran by simply counting the hulls. Any sailboat with two identical hulls side-by-side is a catamaran. A sailboat with a large primary hull in a small outer hull is likely an outrigger, which is a rare type of catamaran.

Why Do Catamarans Have Multiple Hulls?

Catamarans have multiple hulls for speed and stability. The stability advantages of incorporating two narrow hulls and spacing them widely apart are easy to identify. This wide stance makes it very difficult to tip a catamaran in either direction, which increases sailing comfort and significantly reduces rolling in heavy seas.

Speed is another reason why catamarans have two hulls. Catamarans can travel at much faster speeds than monohulls because they're not bound by the rules of hull speed. When a monohull travels through the water and creates a wake, the bow and stern waves will synchronize and interfere with the speed of the boat. When these waves synchronize, the monohull has great difficulty traveling any faster.

Catamaran hulls also generate wakes, but the two side-by-side hulls effectively cancel out the synchronous interference that slows monohulls down. Additionally, the narrow design of the hulls allows them to pierce through waves instead of riding over them, which reduces travel distances and increases efficiency.

Another reason why catamarans have two hulls is that the design reduces draft. The draft is a measurement of how deep in the water the hull extends, and catamarans have some of the shallowest draft-to-length ratios in the sailboat design world. That means that a comparatively large catamaran can travel in much shallower water more safely than a monohull.

Are There Other Multihull Sailboats?

Catamarans are the most common multihull sailboat design, but there are several others available as well. The most common multihull other than the catamaran is the trimaran. As the name suggests, trimarans have three hulls instead of just two. The trimaran usually has two narrow hulls and a larger hull in the center, as the primary purpose of the outer hulls is to provide stability.

Catamarans and trimarans are known for speed. And while catamarans can double or even triple the speed of an equivalently-sized monohull, trimarans can go even faster. This is because trimarans are not bound by the rules of hull speed either, and they create less drag-inducing hydrodynamic interference than catamarans.

Catamaran vs Monohull

Catamarans have a number of distinct advantages over monohull sailboats. The most obvious benefit to experienced sailors is the increased stability of the multihull design. Picture it like a table. A table with wide legs is going to be more stable than a table with narrow legs. Leaning on it won't knock it over as easily—and the same is true out on the water.

Catamarans can also be more spacious than monohulls, without additional size in terms of length. The catamaran is a very old design, as even ancient boatbuilders knew of its advantages. However, there are some downsides to catamarans and other multihull designs, which is why monohulls are still the most common kind of sailboat on the water.

Monohulls are easy to construct. Unlike a catamaran, which must have a carefully designed load-bearing structure connecting the hulls, monohull sailboats derive all of their strength from the hull itself. In other words, there aren't as many weak points, and it's easier to build. Additionally, it's also a lot cheaper to build a monohull, in the design doesn't have to be quite as precise.

Another advantage of a monohull sailboat is that it's easy to configure the interior. If you need more space for accommodations, engineers can simply widen the hull during the design phase. Catamarans have very narrow hulls comparatively and can be hard to effectively utilize space without unnecessary redundancy or cramped quarters. Monohulls are also much more efficient for transporting cargo, as the hulls are wide enough to fit a vast amount of material.

Catamaran Hull Size

Catamarans come in all shapes and sizes. And unlike monohulls, overall length is not the primary deciding factor when it comes to performance. When you picture a catamaran, you're probably thinking about one of the large glossy cruising sailboats that often dot coastal anchorages across the world. These vessels usually range in size from 35 to 55 feet in length.

There are different types of catamarans. The most common kind, known as cruising catamarans, or usually around 45 feet in length. The smallest cruising catamaran is around 30 feet long, as catamarans don't have enough hull for comfortable accommodations at a size smaller than this. Cruising catamarans can reach astounding sizes, often exceeding 50 or 60 feet in length.

The beam, or width, of catamarans, is usually much more significant than monohulls of the same length. This is despite the fact that catamaran hulls are significantly more narrow than other types of vessels. For example, a 40-foot monohull likely has a beam between 10 and 14 feet, whereas a 40-foot catamaran can have a beam of 20 feet or more.

These factors have a positive effect on seaworthiness, as catamarans don't heel over under heavy sail and are extremely difficult to capsize. Additionally, they will float just as well upside down as they do right side up.

However, this additional beam can make docking a catamaran challenging. Marinas that can normally accommodate two large monohulls in a slip can only fit one catamaran in the same space, leading to increased mooring fees.

What Are Catamaran Hulls Made Of?

Catamaran hulls are made from all sorts of materials. The most common catamaran designs use fiberglass, which is a moldable mixture of hard glass fiber and waterproof resin. Fiberglass has been the primary recreational boat building material across the world for more than 60 years, and the technology is better than ever. Fiberglass catamaran hulls can theoretically last forever, they can be molded into any shape at the factory, and they're easy to repair.

The finest custom cruising catamarans are made from aluminum. Aluminum is an extremely costly but highly desirable catamaran building material, as it reduces weight and allows these vessels to reach extremely high speeds. Due to the cost and technical experience required to build an aluminum catamaran, the vast majority of boats are fiberglass.

Wood is occasionally used to build catamaran hulls. Today, most wooden catamarans are made from marine plywood and sheathed in a layer of fiberglass for strength and waterproofing. Traditional wooden construction is only found on outriggers, as it is costly and very time-consuming.

What Are Outriggers?

Outriggers are a type of catamaran that traces its roots all the way back to 3000 BC. An outrigger is a simple open boat with a stabilizing hull mounted off to one side. Some outriggers, especially canoes, have two stabilizing hulls.

Outriggers, while technically catamarans, are not widely used in the 21st-century due to their lack of space and one-sided stability. However, these vessels are an important part of catamaran history and a great demonstration of how multihull designs can add great stability to a boat.

Catamaran Beam to Length Ratios Explained: For Beginners

Starting my sailing career something that struck me was the wast number of weird words and strange terminology, no longer was a rope just a rope, it’s a halyard or a sheet. In this article, I will explain one concept that is important to understand for anyone trying to buy a boat or for someone who wants to better understand the limitations of the vessel they already have.

Catamaran beam-to-length ratios are mathematical representations of the difference between the length of a sailing vessel and its width. There are multiple beam to length ratios, some impacts stability (Bcl/Lwl), and the amount of sail the vessel is able to carry. Others are used to calculate exterior space (B/L). In general, a narrow boat will be less stable but weigh less and cheaper to build.

Most modern catamarans have a beam to length ratio of >50%. You can easily calculate this on your own by following the steps below. But first, let’s check out some more terminology to make sure we really understand this ratio.

Nautical Terminology

No matter how much you love the ocean, you will have limited success if you are unfamiliar with the words that go with adventuring out on it. I need to clarify some nomenclature before we delve into the ins and outs of ratios and catamarans (and monohulls).

  • Beam overall (Boa): is the width of a boat at its widest point. The wider a ship’s beam, the more interior and exterior space. this allows for more gear and and better living accomodations.
  • Draft: sometimes spelled “draught,” is the measure of how deep your vessel “sits” in the water. Catamarans have shallower drafts than monohulls, meaning they can sail in shallower waters and some can even be sail all the way up onto the beach, called beaching a cat .
  • Catamaran: is a boat with twin hulls positioned parallel to each other. This design lends stability to the craft, and since there are two hulls, each can be narrower than a monohull without giving up stability. 
  • Monohulls: boats with one hull. They derive their stability from a heavy keel and a wide hull, in comparison to a catamaran with two thin hulls separated far apart.
  • Length over all (Loa): is measured from the aft to the bows including all gear such as bowsprits etc. To be compared with Length on waterline LWL.
  • Length on waterline (Lwl) is the boats length measured on the surface of the water.

Different Beam to Length Ratios

Hull centerline beam to waterline length (bcl/lwl) :.

The distance between the centerlines of the hulls divided by the waterline length on one hull is a good indicator of performance. It measures the points of the boat that interacts with the water. A higher ratio will give a higher resistance to capsizing and a lower ratio will increase drag due to wave interactions under the bridge deck.

Compared to the beam overall to length overall (Boa/Loa) that more or less only gives you an understanding of whether or not the boat will fit in a certain slip or what you will pay for a canal passage.

Hull Fineness Ratio (HFR)

Hull Fineness Ratio (HFR) is another name for Hull length-to-beam ratio . This is basically the same as the ratio mentioned above but only measures one of the hulls instead of the entire boat. And “fineness,” essentially, means “thinness.” Most cats have a ratio between 8:8 and 10:1 .

These are the exterior measurements of the boat. This ratio will not offer much other information than estimating marina fees and general boat size. To understand catamaran stability the two above ratios are much better since they show how the boat interacts with the water. It is in theory possible to have a very high Boa/Loa ratio but still have a boat that is very unstable due to having a low Bcl/Lwl ratio.

General Rules When Calculating Ratios

Ratios are exercises in long division. Since you remember your rules from math in school, you know that the order of the numbers in the equation makes a difference. 

Make sure you divide Beam by Length (B/L) and not the opposite!

If you mix them up you will get the wrong result and you might assess the stability of the boat incorrectly. And remember to stick to either meter or feet.

The formula looks like this:

B/L = Beam (in ft or meter) to length (in ft or meter) ratio

But how do you measure and from where to where? With those questions in mind, we add even more terminology to all this ciphering.

If, for instance, you have a bowsprit (the railing at the bow that extends past the deck), including this in your length measurement will skew your ratio. The extra length added by the largely cosmetic feature will not contribute to the stability or lack thereof of the craft, mainly because it does not touch the water.

So we look, then, at the measurements at the waterline .

Why Ratios Matters

If your Bcl/Lwl is too low, you will have an unstable craft. Adding a sail to the mix makes it even more so – if you have a ridiculous ratio of something like 1:18, wind in the sails at the correct angle will very likely capsize it. A wave of moderate size could do it, too.

But a 1:1 Bcl/Lwl will make for a floating square with the maneuvering ability of a brick. A floating brick, sure, but it’s still a brick. This ratio is something you only see on really fast racing trimarans, since trimarans lift the windward hull the actual ratio when turning is half of that.

The fineness of a hull determines its speed and stability, which means that with every increase to one of those factors comes a decrease in the other. 3:1 seems to be the Goldilocks Zone for most monohulls. But since catamarans have two hulls separated wide apart the cat will be able to have thinner hulls while still maintaining high stability, a ratio around 8-12:1 is common on catamaran cruisers.

Final Thoughts

Casual sailors may never calculate Bcl/Lwl, B/L, or hull fineness ratio. But if you’re looking to buy a boat and want to better understand its sailing capabilities then these numbers will give you the ability to objectively compare different boats.

Speed and stability are the main factors governed by these ratios, and a change in one of them changes the other in the opposite direction. Generally speaking, the wider the beam, the more stable a ship is.

Let’s look at some of the types of catamarans and their best uses.

Sailing Catamarans

Sailing catamarans have made great strides over the past several decades. Small daysailing cats are popular because they provide a safe and simple learning platform and you’ll find fleets of them in resorts where they’re used by people with very little sailing experience. These types of small cats are usually made of roto-molded plastic or fiberglass and they typically don’t have auxiliary engines so their sole source of propulsion is sails.

Larger sailing cats have taken over the world of distance cruising and bareboat chartering . Nearly all tropically-based bareboat charter companies offer more sailing catamarans today than monohulls and those numbers are also growing in destinations such as the Mediterranean. Typically, charter cats have two engines, one in each hull, to maneuver as well as a mast that supports a mainsail and at least one headsail.

Power Catamarans

Power catamarans, often referred to as "multi-hull powerboats" or "power cats," have larger engines than their sailing cousins and no masts or sails. Their bigger motors give them higher top speeds but these cats also need reinforced hulls to handle the weight and power of these engines. Other than pontoon boats (which arguably are also power cats), motorized cats are the fastest growing segment of the boating market.

Power cats come in various shapes and sizes. Numerous smaller power cat brands are marketed for fishing while larger ones are popping up in bareboat charter and as cruising platforms. Many commercial passenger ferries have also turned to the catamaran design for their spaciousness and speed.

Advantages of Catamaran Boats

There are some inherent advantages of boats with multiple hulls, which include:

  • More deck and interior space per foot than monohulls. A catamaran has about 1.2 times the space of a monohull. In other words, a 40-foot cat should have the deck and interior space of a 50-foot monohull. Cats also have more interior space with up to four cabins even in a vessel under 40 feet in length. These large cabins usually provide easier berth access and they have hull windows with opening ports for better ventilation and light even in the staterooms, which are usually more separated for privacy.
  • Due to their design with two hulls set wide apart, cats enjoy greater stability under way and at rest in rolly anchorages . Unlike a monohull that can heel under sail or roll when powered, cats stay level, which makes them safer and easier for people and pets to maneuver on the flat deck. Some say cats have an easier motion than monohulls and tend to induce less seasickness.
  • With twin engines, cats’ propellers are set wide apart so these boats have excellent maneuverability. Cats can venture into shallower waters too – especially sailing cats that don’t have deep keels. Because cats don’t drag a massive keel through the water, they’re also on average 20-30 percent more fuel-efficient even with two engines.
  • Larger, more sophisticated power and sailing catamarans have a natural redundancy built into their equipment inventory, which translates to comfort and safety. For example, if a fresh water pump fails in one hull, there’s usually another to provide water for washing up. If one engine fails or one propeller spins off, there’s another to get the vessel to homeport safely. There’s also more room for the installation of additional systems like generators, watermakers, battery banks, and more.

Drawbacks of Catamaran Boats

Like any boat type, there are a few small drawbacks when it comes to catamarans:

  • Catamarans take up more space so it’s often difficult and expensive to find dock space.
  • Due to their design, both power and sailing cats can also slam the bridge deck into oncoming waves when going to weather.
  • Additionally, sailing cats don’t necessarily sail as well upwind as monohulls because with two hulls, they simply can’t point as high into the wind.
  • Finally, it may be tempting to load up a catamaran due to the space it offers but a sure way to damage a power or sailing cat’s performance is to overload them or have uneven weight distribution—something, which is less of a problem on their monohull counterparts.

Whether used for daysailing, world cruising, chartering or fishing, boats with two hulls are growing in acceptance and appeal. The basic design may be hundreds of years old but today’s updated designs make catamarans a viable option for any boater.

Are catamarans more expensive than monohulls?

Purchasing or chartering a catamaran is usually more expensive than a monohull since there are more accessories and even more fiberglass construction to pay for. Over time, cost of ownership can be higher too since there are two hulls to polish and wax and more equipment to service or replace. It’s also more expensive to haul out a catamaran for bottom work.

What is the typical draft of a catamaran?

Draft (depth below waterline) depends on the size and type of cat. Small daysailing cats can draw mere inches but with a large cruising cat, it may be 3-4 feet. Some cats have dagger boards that are used to improve upwind performance. With the boards down, a cat can draw 10 feet or more but these boards may be lifted to allow access to shallow water.

Can catamarans be raced?

Catamarans make fine racers as has been proven by the America’s Cup contenders. There are also one-design classes in the smaller, open designs.

Part 2: W ith permission from Terho Halme – Naval Architect

While Part 1 showcased design comments from Richard Woods , this second webpage on catamaran design is from a paper on “How to dimension a sailing catamaran”, written by the Finnish boat designer, Terho Halme. I found his paper easy to follow and all the Catamaran hull design equations were in one place.  Terho was kind enough to grant permission to reproduce his work here.

Below are basic equations and parameters of catamaran design, courtesy of Terho Halme. There are also a few references from ISO boat standards. The first step of catamaran design is to decide the length of the boat and her purpose. Then we’ll try to optimize other dimensions, to give her decent performance. All dimensions on this page are metric, linear dimensions are in meters (m), areas are in square meters (m2), displacement volumes in cubic meters (m3), masses (displacement, weight) are in kilograms (kg), forces in Newton’s (N), powers in kilowatts (kW) and speeds in knots.

Length, Draft and Beam

There are two major dimensions of a boat hull: The length of the hull L H  and length of waterline L WL  . The following consist of arbitrary values to illustrate a calculated example. 

L H  = 12.20      L WL  = 12.00

After deciding how big a boat we want we next enter the length/beam ratio of each hull, L BR . Heavy boats have low value and light racers high value. L BR  below “8” leads to increased wave making and this should be avoided. Lower values increase loading capacity. Normal L BR  for a cruiser is somewhere between 9 and 12. L BR  has a definitive effect on boat displacement estimate.

Im working though these formuals to help in the conversion of a cat from diesel to electric. Range, Speed, effect of extra weight on the boat….. Im having a bit of trouble with the B_TR. First off what is it? You don’t call it out as to what it is anywhere that i could find. Second its listed as B TR = B WL / T c but then directly after that you have T c = B WL / B TR. these two equasion are circular….

Yes, I noted the same thing. I guess that TR means resistance.

I am new here and very intetested to continue the discussion! I believe that TR had to be looked at as in Btr (small letter = underscore). B = beam, t= draft and r (I believe) = ratio! As in Lbr, here it is Btr = Beam to draft ratio! This goes along with the further elaboration on the subject! Let me know if I am wrong! Regards PETER

I understood everything, accept nothing makes sense from Cm=Am/Tc*Bwl. Almost all equations from here on after is basically the answer to the dividend being divided into itself, which gives a constant answer of “1”. What am I missing? I contacted the original author on Facebook, but due to Facebook regulations, he’s bound never to receive it.

Hi Brian, B WL is the maximum hull breadth at the waterline and Tc is the maximum draft.

The equation B TW = B WL/Tc can be rearranged by multiplying both sides of the equation by Tc:

B TW * Tc = Tc * B WL / Tc

On the right hand side the Tc on the top is divided by the Tc on the bottom so the equal 1 and can both be crossed out.

Then divide both sides by B TW:

Cross out that B TW when it is on the top and the bottom and you get the new equation:

Tc = B WL/ B TW
