Azimut’s new flagship pushes the builder into the domain of superyachts with style and grace

Frisson is the scientific term for a psychophysiological response to an aesthetic stimulus, otherwise known as “chills”. For some, it happens when listening to Andrea Bocelli leave a part of his soul in a verse of Con Te Partiró . For designer Alberto Mancini , that frisson came unexpectedly, as it does, while he sat in the beach club of the Azimut Grande Trideck in Monaco harbour.

“I was invited on board by one of the owners,” the Italian yacht designer says, “and I was looking around at other similar-sized yachts and they were 20 or 30 years behind the Azimut with their design. Honestly, it gave me chills.”

The latest boat to derive from the builder’s constant innovation is the 38-metre flagship of Azimut’s Grande line, and the brand’s first tri-deck yacht. It’s a superyacht, yes, but still a fast boat as Azimuts are meant to be. Naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio designed the yacht’s D2P (displacement-to-planing) hull. The bottom has three major features that make it special: a double chine that increases stability at slow speeds and reduces drag at higher ones; a wavepiercer bow that extends the length at waterline to increase fuel efficiency and minimise pitch; and a central skeg for course integrity, particularly in aft quartering seas. Even with the skeg, the Azimut Trideck draws just over two metres, making her able to navigate all but the skinniest waters.

With the hammer down, this Azimut can get up and go to the tune of 24 knots, more than fast enough to outrun any unexpected foul weather. It can hit these speeds thanks to two 2,600hp straight-shaft MTUs. The much-sought-after wind-in-your-hair feeling that these speeds engender can be enjoyed on multiple exterior decks. The crux of the Trideck’s design and appeal is in these areas, so much so that Azimut describes the yacht as “three decks plus one”.

“We worked with Alberto Mancini to make an additional deck on the aft end of the main deck,” explains Marco Valle, CEO of the Azimut Benetti Group , which creates a cascading effect from the sundeck down to the beach club. This yacht has more spaces from which to enjoy the sea, he says, from the more traditional foredeck, sundeck, upper deck and the beach club, to a split-level main deck aft.

Mancini, who applied similar thinking to his previous collaborations with Azimut, says the cascading exterior was the product of a deliberate goal to come up with a distinctive characteristic. “We created a proper raised aft deck. We call it a ‘sea view aft terrace’, and it’s a lovely place to enjoy the water and the breeze with your guests, and it complements that beach club so well.”

This “terrace” has about 30 square metres of space, outfitted with a sweeping, U-shaped sofa that should be a hotspot whether underway or standing still. It leaves plenty of room below for a full-height beach club.

Azimut also wanted the beach club to be as closely connected to the marine environment as possible. “The biggest problem with a beach club is that the deck is closed off on all sides, and the owners are stuck in the shadows,” says Mancini. “No one wants that. We created openings on either side of the boat, so you never feel oppressed like you’re in a cave. Instead, you  can feel the wind and the water on your skin. We think it’s a great achievement. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before on a yacht this size.”

The owner of the first Azimut Trideck, a repeat client who splits his onboard time between South Florida and the Med, buttresses Mancini’s take. “The beach club is well furnished and open to the sea air,” he says. “You don’t feel like you’re in something enclosed. It’s just an open look and feel and it’s almost flush with the water. So my wife can lie on the bed and watch everyone in the water. It’s like having another saloon, except it’s open to the environment. We love it.”

The foredeck lounge also makes for an excellent place to relax on massive sunpads and in the spa pool. Another space on the aft section of the upper deck offers impressive views and serves as the setting for al fresco meals, thanks to a dining table that can easily sit eight guests.  A “skydeck” with chaises longues sits above all, bringing sun worshippers closer to their god.

Of course, with all these outdoor spaces, it would have been easy for the yacht’s lines to become somewhat askew and top-heavy. But Azimut and Mancini understand that with any beautiful thing, proportion is key. They took great pains to ensure that the vessel’s aesthetic elements work in harmony.

For his part in this endeavour, Mancini points to his automotive design pedigree. “When one works with automobiles, the main goal is always to get the proportion right, and so that is always my goal with the yachts as well,” he says. “I’m inspired by sports cars and that industry. Even a car that’s only maybe five metres long directly informs what I will do with a yacht like this one, that is 38 metres.”

The Azimut Trideck has an undeniable je ne sais quois to its outward appearance. Perhaps it’s the way the upper deck parallels the relatively straight sheer line, or the proportion of the bow to the superstructure, which seems to mimic the mix of gravitas and extravagance seen in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce.

Mancini points out that not a drop of seaworthiness was sacrificed for aesthetics.  “I have a good partnership with Azimut’s technical department,” he says. “We have daily emails and meetings on the construction and design process. They let me draw what I want to start. You can call this part ‘the romantic step’. I sketch what I feel and they don’t tell me ‘Oh you can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ They allow me to brainstorm, and then the design team works with my vision step by step to approach the technical and practical things and make sure that everything works perfectly.”

A technical decision that paid dividends for Azimut was to use as much carbon fibre as possible, particularly in the superstructure, which is entirely laminated in the material.  A driving factor of the yacht’s design was to keep her as light as possible without sacrificing structural integrity, and the carbon fibre helped achieve that. She tips the scales at a relatively feathery 190 tonnes at full displacement. And the decision to use carbon fibre paid off in spades in her interior volume, another key area of the Trideck’s development. There’s so much space that Azimut offers an option for a sixth guest cabin on the upper deck. Valle says that five of  the six hulls the company has sold have  taken advantage of the six-cabin layout, which is the only major layout customisation available.

The yacht’s interior designer, Achille Salvagni , who pens the interiors for all the models in the Grande series, entered the project with a simple yet ambitious concept in his mind. “The true disruptive force behind this project is its desire to define an alternative use for the settings, by opening them up, and in doing so, presenting new ways to experience the boat,” he says. “When the function of a given space is not strictly defined, it becomes more fluid and changeable, shaped around the need for conviviality and socialisation.” In other words, an open mind leads to open space.

This fluidity shows in the absence of a formal dining area on the main deck. Instead, meals can be hosted at tables on the upper deck, sundeck or the al fresco section of the main deck. This choice opens up the saloon for more casual entertaining and makes it a voluminous party space as well. The goal is to embody a loose and flexible atmosphere.

The interior lines – perhaps best exemplified by the furniture that eschews corners – were designed by Salvagni to be “smooth and sinuous”. Light creams and greys play gently off one another on the fabrics by the Milanese brand Dedar, the veneers, and in the marbles and other stones found throughout.

Salvagni’s work has Azimut’s clients abuzz.  “If you look at the ceiling, the floor, everywhere, there is a lot of Italian style, which I like,” the owner says. “The fit and finish has a real megayacht feel to it. And the quality as well. It starts in the railings, and it goes into the hallways and the interior spaces. And another, slightly different aspect I love about it is the isolation you can feel in the boat. They did a wonderful job with the sound insulation. For me, it’s important that when you walk in one section of the boat, you can’t hear it in another section. And this Azimut is almost totally silent inside. It’s amazing.”

The lush and thoughtful interior combines with a heavy emphasis on outdoor living to create a yacht that can do it all. As the owner puts it, “When I’m in the Med, I like to go to Monaco and the fancier places and go out to the parties and restaurants, and the [Trideck’s] lines and high style make her perfect for that,” he says. “But I also travel with my family and want to go to the more isolated islands and really get a chance to enjoy the natural environment in peace and quiet, and she can do that as well.  I really don’t know of any other boat that can go to either kind of place quite as expertly as this one. My family and I expect to create many good memories on board.” It’s enough to give anyone the chills.

Reviewed: Azimut Atlantis 45

The Azimut Atlantis 45 shares the same next-generation design cues as the line’s flagship, the 51. Both are snub-nosed open cruisers with hardtops, and both have that smart, new Azimut look. Check out the latest S Collection flagship, the Azimut Grande S10, and you’ll see much of the same sheer and stem, despite the fact that the S10 is twice the length and more than five times the displacement of the 45.

The only power option for the Atlantis 45 is a pair of Volvo Penta D6-440 diesels well-matched to IPS600 pod drives. Azimut quotes a full-load maximum speed of 33 knots and a fast cruise of 28 knots for this model.

We were registering a little better. According to the yacht’s Garmin instrumentation, the 45 topped out at just over 34 knots in Trim Assist mode, but with it switched off and a little tinkering, I coaxed the yacht north of 35 knots. Theoretically, the useful range at a moderate-to-fast cruise would be 200 to 240 nautical miles.

Thanks to a V-hull form with a 15-degree transom deadrise, the 45′s handling is precise throughout the engines’ rpm ranges. And Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control joystick aids in close-quarters handling.

Azimut’s ergonomics are usually pretty good, and to that end, two bolster seats to starboard address the console with the driver’s seat inboard. To port of the helm is a double bench seat that converts to a 4-foot square lounger. Personally, I’d keep it that way. Who needs the on-the-bus seating? Given the shade of the hardtop—providing you have the 92-by-75-inch retractable fabric sunroof closed—this is the place to curl up with a good book.

But then, perception of space aboard the 45 is slightly skewed because the companionway is off-center, so what you may suppose to be the middle of the yacht really isn’t. Abaft the helm seats, there’s booth dining for as many as eight guests, if you have a couple extra seats handy to complete the ring around the four-piece cockpit table. The table is mostly protected by the hardtop, and there’s an extendable awning, stretched taut by stainless-steel struts, delivering more shade to the aft seating and about half of the stern sun pad.

Belowdecks, the 45 has a two-stateroom, two-head layout with a galley/salon amidships, made all the better for hull windows and an opaque skylight above. The owner’s stateroom is in the bow with facilities en suite. The headroom where you need it is 6 feet, 3 inches. The aft stateroom is surprisingly good, especially for those with younger children. There are three single berths, with an option for a double-plus when the two athwartship beds are combined. The booth sofa in the main salon converts to a double berth too.

The Atlantis 45 takes the builder’s midsize offerings in a new design direction, one that has proved popular on larger models. For yachtsmen looking for big-boat styling in a family-size express cruiser, the 45 may be worth a look.

Azimut S8 Review: Perfect Sports Yacht

Interesting in many aspects, the new Azimut S8 boasts great performance, large open exterior spaces and lavishly designed interior, and a stylish overall feeling shaped by designers Alberto Mancini and Francesco Guida

The latest model in Azimut S Collection has entered the market in 2019 at Cannes Yachting Festival , without much pomp, overshadowed by S10, the biggest in her line. The interior is just as inviting. Straight up from the cockpit, the salon offers two sofas in the sitting area, then continues to the dining space starboard and the command post to the port, with two seats and a dedicated door leading to the deck.

The salon is well lit by natural light seeping through large windows and the skylight, which can be covered electrically. The command console is large and has three Garmin screens that control everything, even the engines. Below deck, beside the galley, there are four cabins – the master aft, the VIP in the bow, and two guest cabins with Pullman beds, and the S8 overall has ten berths. Another big hit for Azimut, and a challenge for every builder looking to do better in this class.

Best Azimut yachts: 7 of the finest models from the famed Italian yard

Azimut Yachts is one of the biggest names in Italian boating. We round up 7 of the best Azimut yachts that we’ve tested over the years.

Famed on both sides of the Atlantic for effortless Italian style and breathtaking performance, Azimut Yachts has been at the forefront of motorboat innovation for more than 50 years now.

And since 1985, Azimut’s range has been part of the Azimut-Benetti Group – one of the world’s largest yachting brands.

Over the years we’ve taken the helm of dozens of the best Azimut yachts, but here are some of the most memorable examples.

7 of the best Azimut yachts

Azimut atlantis 34.

Azimut is famed for its larger flybridges , but the way the yard distilled this luxury essence into a 33ft package in 2013 was arguably one of their most impressive achievements to date.

The smallest Atlantis in the range and one of the smallest Azimuts ever built, the Atlantis 34 charmed our reviewer Nick Burnham with its “pared-back, minimalist vibe”.

“The Atlantis 34 has to walk a tightrope between offering proper Azimut quality while also competing with boats that might be deemed a rung or two below it,” he added. “So, has it succeeded? Hell yes!”

Launched in 1999, the Azimut 42 flybridge stood the test of time so well that we went back for a second look 14 years later as part of our Used Boat series.

Early models will look a little dated due to the choice of interior fabrics, explains our reviewer Greg Copp, but the exterior has aged like a fine Chianti.

The visibility from the lower helm is excellent, he adds, even if there isn’t standing headroom, but it’s the upper helm that really sets this boat apart, giving the full wind-in-your-hair Azimut driving experience.

Azimut Magellano 43

Azimut describes its Magellano range as hybrid boats, but for once the term doesn’t relate to the power system. In this instance, it refers to a hull designed specifically to run comfortably at low speed, yet still have the ability to reach higher speeds when required.

Launched in 2013 and dubbed as the Range Rover of the seas, the Azimut Magellano 43 was the third model in the range after the Magellano 50 and 70.

Our reviewer Dave Marsh praised its smooth riding and easy manoeuvrability, as well as its luxurious interior and sturdy build quality.

Moving into core Azimut territory now, the 58 was launched in 2008 with a price tag just a shade under £1million.

“Around this price bracket, wonderful things start to happen inside,” explained our reviewer Dave Marsh.

A single-level saloon and galley and a full-beam amidships owner’s cabin are just the start of the Azimut 58’s story.

Lashings of real leather trim and acres of solid limed oak woodwork add up to create a feeling of unbridled luxury and outstanding quality.

The S6 is one of the most celebrated models in Azimut’s current collection, having scooped up a much-coveted Motor Boat Award in 2021.

It was the fine balance between luxurious accommodation and performance that impressed our reviewer Alan Harper so much.

This is achieved largely through extensive use of carbon fibre in the superstructure – the entire deckhouse, stern, transom and main deck aft of midships is built from this super-light material.

The result is a full-load displacement of less than 30 tonnes and a top speed just a whisker over 35 knots.

Fun in the sun: the Azimut 62S was a joy to handle on our 2006 test drive.

After decades of focussing solely on flybridges, Azimut launched its S range of large sportscruisers in 2004, and it really hit the sweet spot in 2006 with the Azimut 62S.

After taking a test drive, Alan Harper reported: “Acceleration is exceptional (zero to 30 knots in 24 seconds), the turning circle is commendably tight, and far from digging in, the bow showed no inclination to do anything except pull the rest of the boat round as quickly as possible.”

The accommodation is as lavish as you’d expect from a 62ft boat with only two cabins. The dedicated galley can be turned into a third cabin, but squeezing more cabins in is simply not the Azimut way.

The hydraulic swim platform has a 500kg lift capacity.

We place a lot of emphasis on facts and figures in our industry-leading boat tests , but the Azimut 64 was so much fun to drive that Alan Harper briefly forgot about all that when he got behind the wheel back in 2011.

The straight-line acceleration of this twin Caterpillar C-18 driven monster is such that he reckoned it could outdo a Pershing 64 in a drag race.

35-tonne, three-cabin family cruisers have no right to perform this well, but then again Azimut has never paid much attention to the rule book!

Azimut Magellano 66

Recently refreshed for 2021, the Azimut Magellano 66 is a design that has stood the test of time. We tested the original model back in 2016 and Dave Marsh was impressed by its contemporary styling, modern exterior and acres of storage space.

“If the intention of the Magellano 66 was to bridge the gap between so called ‘serious’ trawler yachts from the likes of Grand Banks and Fleming, and the more avant-garde trawlers from the high volume production builders, then the Italian company has succeeded brilliantly,” he added.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws : “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Lazzara UHV 87

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Sunseeker 100 Yacht

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

Azimut Grande 26M

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. Princess X95

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

Extra X96 Triplex

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area, and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley, and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Sunreef 100

This Sunreef power catamaran’s beam spans a staggering 44 feet, offering the kind of interior and exterior spaces you only get with superyachts twice the length. Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.

Absolute Navetta 75

In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. The salon features floor-to-ceiling glass, with full views of the water, courtesy of open bulwarks. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo IPS1350 diesels deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Pricing starts at about $4 million.

Arcadia A96

Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. For extra peace and quiet at anchor, solar panels can provide up to nine hours of generator-free power.

Numarine 26XP Fast

Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

Among other designs worth mentioning are their new additions SX112, 164-foot 500EXP Ocean Dreamwalker lll, or the 210-foot 64Steel. One thing they all have in common is that they cater to the American lifestyle.

• 16. Rossinavi

Rossinavi has worked with some of the world’s best designers available to come up with unique and futuristic designs. Some of their most popular superyachts in the last few years have got to be 160-foot Endeavour ll and the 161-foot Aurora. Achille Salvagni is responsible for both designs, but they are quite different from one another.

The Alfa 50, with its sleek modern look, was designed by Enrico Gobbi. Pininfarina, who has put their signature touch on Ferrari, has unveiled some of Rossinavi’s new concepts, which make them stand out from other brands.

• 15. Baglietto

Another Italian company, they have been around since 1840, when Pietro Baglietto started building wooden fishing ships in his backyard. He expanded his company by manufacturing boats for kings and popes, and in 1906 built his first combustion engine.

Eventually, the company was saved from bankruptcy by the Gavio Group and they got a facelift with the introduction of their new model line, which ranges from 43 to 230 feet yachts. Their Silver Fox, which was launched in 2018, is designed by Francesco Paszkowski and it could easily be considered a true work of art.

• 14. Mangusta

The company is owned by the Balducci family and it was started in 1985. They specialize in luxury sports yachts and voyage superyachts, all of which you can customize to your personal tastes. They have built more than 300 yachts in their 34 year career, and they are still going strong.

The Mangusta Oceano, for example, is one of their long-range yachts with ranges up to 5,000 miles. The Mangusta Maxi Open series offers speed, stability and quietness. And their GranSports is a fast-displacement series that covers long distances.

• 13. Princess Yachts

Established in 1965, this British company has grown into a conglomerate with multiple production sites over the years. They build contemporary yachts in seven classes, ranging from open boats to megayachts. Their flagship Imperial Princess, a 131-foot 40M superyacht, has a large interior and lots of natural light.

It is built on the South Yard, which was formerly a 17th century naval yard. Their R35, one of their most innovative models, is built with a foil system which reduces drag and can revolutionize yachting, and was designed by Pininfarina, the same acclaimed design studio that works with Rossinavi as well.

The crown jewel of the Ferretti group, CRN is famous for their landmark Chopi Chopi, a 262-foot megayacht. The different ranges of the military style 180-foot Atlante, the sleek hull of the 239-foot Yalla, or even the high-tech Cloud 9 yacht show the different customizable possibilities from CRN Yachts.

Ferretti invested lots of money into their Ancona Yard, and their tri-deck motor yacht, as well as the Superconero are just some of the upgraded versions of the staples that brought them on the map in the first place.

• 11. Sunseeker

One of the UK’s most important shipyards, Sunseeker manufactures most of its vessels in Poole, Dorset. Their place in the yachting world is secured with four superyacht models ranging from 116 to 161-foot, and their 76 to 100-foot motor yachts. One of the oldest shipyards from Holland, they have been around since 1884. They have three large facilities, one in Vollenhove, one in Amsterdam, and a third in Emden, where they can build large yachts up to 266 feet. Their fleet is well known for their sailing superyachts Gliss, Antares and Sea Eagle among many others.

The Ngoni, a 190-foot is built with an eclectic interior, and the 184-foot classic Aquarius are some of their popular models. Project Phi is their newest addition to an already solid fleet and the Apex 850 concept will be probably turned into reality too. 

• 9. Perini Navi

Two yards in Italy and a third in Turkey are the places where the newest additions to their line up are being built right now. Restructuring of the company’s management in 2017 resulted in a major refresh of their fleet too. New lines such as the E-volution Yacht series, the Argonaut, Heritage and Voyager are going to be the new focus for Perini Navi.

Sometimes a change is needed, and their new innovations have proven successful. Their hybrid-powered models such as the Eco-tender are built to keep up with the changes necessary for the environment.

• 8. Nobiskrug

Located in Northern Germany, Nobiskrug operates from two facilities which build vessels ranging from 197 to 1,398 feet. The 115 year old company is a pioneer in the superyacht division with their 2000 Tatoosh model. They employ more than 1,000 professionals who excel in the business.

The 262 foot Artefact was launched only last year, and at 2999 GT it is the largest superyacht by volume in the world. It is also the first in the world to meet IMO Tier lll emissions regulations. In-house production of everything from hull construction to mechanical work makes them one of the most diverse and eco-friendly companies in their category.

• 7. Feadship

The famous Dutch company comprises De Vooght Naval Architects, De Vries and Van Lent family yards, with locations in Amsterdam, Aalsmeer, Kaag, and Makkum. Responsible for dozens of custom launches over the last seven decades, they are considered Holland’s powerhouse.

Symphony, a 333-foot pioneer to cross the 100-meter mark, and the 312-foot Faith has its own helicopter pad with hangar on the foredeck, and on the aft deck a glass floor swimming pool. They are just some of their more famous models, they have many others you can research if interested.

One of the best superyacht builders in the world, this Dutch company is based in Vlissingen. Operating for more than 100 years, they offer the Full Custom and Limited Editions, ranging from 108 to 272 foot LOA. The facilities are used for both military and commercial vessels, and they employ the most skilled workers in the industry.

Their most noteworthy launches in the last couple of years are the 243-foot Universe, the 205-foot Sea & US, along the 189-foot Volpini 2. The potential owners are able to customize both interiors and exteriors according to their taste.

One of the oldest and largest superyacht builders in the world, Benetti has been making custom and semi custom builds since 1875. They currently have 97 yachts under build larger than 78 feet. The Ironman, Metis and Spectre are some of their newest additions. The FB277 351-foot gigayacht is currently being under construction at the Livorno yard.

Their Luminosity is believed to be valued at more than 200 million EUR and became one of the top 10 largest Superyachts delivered in 2019. Pretty amazing!

Founded in 1978, this Dutch superyacht brand specializes in custom-made builds. Therefore, their fleet is limited, so there are three different ways to own a Heesen boat. Through the Pure Custom program the buyer can order a unique individual design and engineering.

The Platform Concept program offers custom exterior design but standard engineering, and the third option is to buy a brand new custom superyacht as soon as it is made available for purchase. The Galactica Super Nova is their largest built at 230 feet, and their Maximus, with an open cockpit and a swimming pool with a waterfall is a special yacht someone will surely enjoy.

A fairly young company, this Dutch company based in Alblasserdam has been around since 1987. They specialize in custom expedition yachts ranging from 262 to 459 feet. The builder launched Project Bravo in 2018, which is a fuel efficient and eco-friendly innovative design. Their green technologies are predominant in their newest addition to their fleet.

Their most famous superyachts are the 311-foot Indian Empress and the 300-foot Equanimity. Their Black Pearl, a 350-foot technically advanced designed sailing superyacht stands on its own.

• 2. Abeking & Rasmussen

Successful in setting new technological standards, this family business is located across the river from Lurssen in Germany. They have been the best in the making of naval vessels since 1917, and they also specialize in coast guard and patrol vessels, as well as custom yachts. German engineering at its best, A & R has been an innovative company who is not scared of change.

They are developing a hybrid fuel cell powered by methanol that emits only clean steam, the first hydrocarbon emission free in the world. The Aviva, a 321-foot flagship has its own paddle-tennis court on the premises.

Lürssen is a family business who believes in producing the best quality yachts in the world. Focused on excellence, this German company is another leader in the luxury yachting world. Their eight shipyards located in the northern part of the country have been responsible for building more than 13.000 vessels since 1875.

They do everything from building new yachts, as well as refitting, repairing and providing maintenance services on the premises. The iconic Azzam, the largest superyacht in the world is 590 feet long , is designed with the best quality woodwork and custom furniture inside a high-tech hull.
