M ARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Marquette Yacht Club helped junior club members and their families get out on the water on Wednesday evening.
Boat owners volunteered their vessels to take kids out for real sailing experience.
Michael Twohey, Marquette Yacht Club commodore, said hosting events for kids helps instill the love of sailing in the next generation.
“It’s the future of the club really,” Twohey said. “To continue to teach these kids and bring them up through sailing, and hopefully someday they’ll want to join the Yacht Club.”
Rah Trost, Youth Sailing School director, said it’s a rare opportunity for the kids to get to sail with their families and with these other experienced sailors.
“We think it’s really fun for them to be able to get out and sail with some seasoned sailors, and enjoy a beautiful night and hopefully pick up some tricks or skills that they didn’t know about earlier,” Trost said. “It’s a learning experience but it’s really a nice opportunity for sailors to meet sailors.”

CAMDEN — Freeport-based author Nat Warren-White will recount highlights of a five-year trans-global sailing adventure during a free Sunset Seminar presentation, Wednesday, Aug. 28., at 7 p.m., at the Camden Yacht Club.
Warren-White’s 2022 book, In Slocum’s Wake , compares his expedition with that of Joshua Slocum, the first person to sail alone around the world. Starting in Freeport in 2006, Warren-White crossed the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans aboard his 43' South African-built cutter, Bahati. His talk will take the audience from the San Blas Islands off Panama to the Galapagos, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Indonesia, Thailand, Mauritius, Reunion, South Africa, St Helena, and the small Caribbean island of Bequia. It will include practical tips and tales of encounters with fellow sailors and others Warren-White, his family, and other crew members met along the way.
In addition to being a writer and circumnavigator, Nat Warren-White is an actor, director, executive coach, and drama therapist. He has received two John Parkinson Transoceanic Awards and a Circumnavigation Award from the Cruising Club of America. Since returning to his hometown of South Freeport on the Harraseeket River, Warren-White has loved once again cruising the Maine Coast aboard his Cape Dory 25, Lilibet .
The Yacht Club, located at 68 Bay View Street, hosts the nonprofit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP), open to all young people in the community. Voluntary donations for CAYSP’s generous scholarships, which make sailing lessons affordable to all, will be gratefully accepted at the seminar. Complete details about this year’s Sunset Seminars are available at https://camdenyachtclub.org/sunset-seminars .

re MYC Junior Sailing Program was established in 1989, providing the unique opportunity for hundreds of children and adults to learn an exciting and challenging new skill, one that can bring a lifetime of enjoyment and personal development.
Learning to sail develops physical coordination, balance, and confidence in one’s abilities. Additionally, sailing is a mentally stimulating activity that requires strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. These skills will not only serve children and adults well in their sailing adventures but can also transfer over to other aspects of life, such as work, school, and personal relationships. Moreover, sailing instills a strong connection to the natural environment and fosters an appreciation for the beauty and power of the water.
Beginner Sailor
Sailors just starting out, that have had a few weeks of sailing school, or are looking for a refresher would benefit from this class.
Our beginner sailors, ages 6 to 18, will learn water safety, sailing terminology, names and functions of boat parts, and points of sail. Students will learn to rig the boat themselves. Students will experience steering the boat, adjusting sails, and learning to sail both upwind and downwind with time on-the-water.
There is nothing like sailing for learning life lessons. To learn to sail teaches both teamwork and independence, engineering and physics, history, and the power of the wind. Students will experience the amazing adventure that sailing can give.
Experienced Sailor
Our experienced sailor sailing course will cover more sailing techniques and strategies for children ages 8 to 18 with previous sailing experience who are comfortable navigating a sailboat on their own. Along with teaching the STEAM principles of sailing, lessons will cover boat handling and navigation, rigging, sail shape, and an introduction to speed strategy.
The course is designed to provide a challenging and engaging experience for experienced sailors, while also helping them to develop new skills and strategies to enhance their sailing performance.
