Superyacht Forum 2023 Highlights

This year’s Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam saw more than 800 guests participate in the 31st edition with a host of impactful panels and workshops held over the course of the 3 days.

The PYA along with other industry organisations took part in discussions on a wide range of issues from technological innovations to crew welfare.

Keynote speeches and sessions included insightful anecdotes of an industry that is changing rapidly and adapting to a new reality where environmental concerns and protecting maritime ecosystems is top of the agenda. Regulations and technology debates at this year’s event along with networking sessions fostered new collaborations between governing bodies and the wider industry - highlighting key issues that we will face in the coming years ahead.

“The Superyacht Forum is a fantastic event that brings together people from all sides of the industry to discuss crucial matters. Our take is that most of the issues are related to a lack of professionalism and training. The PYA is working on various initiatives to tackle some of these problems through collaboration with stakeholders. The feedback on this was positive, and we look forward to launching these initiatives next year. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Martin from The Superyacht Group for inviting the PYA to such an important event, ” said Kim Llorente, Operations Manager for the PYA.

Industries also collaborated outside of the yachting space with delegates from luxury hospitality, business aviation and ocean conservation discussing important sector-wide issues that will impact all stakeholders.

This year’s attendees were also reminded of the precarious position that the yachting industry is in with a renewed focus on environmental concerns - echoed by PYA’s CEO, Christophe Bourillon, who highlighted this new reality in his latest position paper . With protest movements such as Extinction Rebellion evidently visible at this year’s event, delegates were keen to unveil ambitious reforms that will help yachting become more sustainable in future years. Part of the focus on sustainability has also been to unify various metrics to measure efforts and present evidence of binding reductions of carbon emissions as well as increasing protection for fragile maritime ecosystems.

The openness of this year’s event showcased how much progress is being made across sectors and internationally to address the various issues impacting yacht crews.

Meet us at The Superyacht Forum & METSTRADE 2023

The Superyacht Forum & METSTRADE 2023 are right around the corner, and we are so excited to unveil our compelling programme for these events as strategic partners for another year.

Water Revolution is set to play a pivotal role during The Superyacht Forum’s ‘Ocean’ Day on Wednesday, 15 November. From 11:30 – 13:00, we will be leading the workshop YETI – Lifecycle Impact & Refit to explore how refit activities and modifications can affect a yacht’s score for the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI). This engaging session will feature insights from our Sustainable Design Specialist, Hanna Dąbrowska, along with contributions from Kristina Hebert of Ward’s Marine Electric, Derek Munro from Divergent Yachting, and Stefan Coronel of Royal Huisman Shipyard.

Following this, our Executive Director Robert van Tol will be participating in the Keynote Debate – Ocean Focused Sustainability from 16:30 – 18:30, presenting our initiatives and ambitions related to ocean advocacy, impact improvement, and delivering ESG frameworks. He will be joined on stage by Nigel Marrison of Blue ESG, Kelvin Murray of EYOS Expeditions, and Natalie Quevert of Sea Index to highlight our collective pursuit of a sustainable yachting industry.

Take a walk down the Superyacht Sustainability Route

Exhibitors who have passed a third-party Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with a verified entry in our Database of Solutions will be featured and given exposure to purchasers attending METSTRADE on the second edition of the Superyacht Sustainability Route. This year’s route will feature Explore E8 & E9 by OceanLED, Hempaguard X7 by Hempel, Hull Vane by Hull Vane B.V., RecondOil by SKF, and Magellan 630 Extra & Giraglia 633 Extra by Boero.  

You can find a member of our team at our service desk in the Elicium building from 10:00 – 12:00 & 15:00 – 17:00 each day throughout the METSTRADE show (15-17 November)!

At the beginning of November, the Superyacht Forum was held in Amsterdam, attended by over 800 people from more than 375 companies operating in the industry. As always, AITAC attended both the Superyacht Forum and METS trade. It was a pleasure to make new contacts and see old ones. This year, the topics at the presentations were less related to shipbuilding and more oriented to operations - organization and management of the crew and management of ships in operation. As part of the presentation, there were topics and presenters who are exceptional in their work, have been doing it for many years, and are excellent presenters. 

Such events are a great opportunity for direct contacts with clients, equipment manufacturers, in general to find out another perspective of the same business.

Our yachting team members, Kate Shaw and Emma Hill from the Isle of Man and Malta will be attending The Superyacht Forum this November in Amsterdam. The event will host over 800 delegates at this event, for a series of debates, keynotes and workshops to present the latest developments in the sector.

Here they will meet with our close intermediaries from around the globe and form valuable relationships to present our bespoke services in the yachting sector.

“We will be attending The Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam from 14-16 November and are looking forward to celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Superyacht Group. Superyacht Forum 2020: One Industry - One Forum - One Mission

Once again, The Superyacht Group will organise the Superyacht Forum in partnership with METSTRADE. From 16th – 18th November 2020 in Amsterdam. The theme for this edition of the event will be ‘One Industry – One Forum – One Mission’.

METSTRADE aspires to be the first business to business event after the many global lockdowns. Coming together as one during METSTRADE and the Superyacht Forum is very important for the industry. The Superyacht Forum in particular will be the first major meeting of superyacht executives since the global outbreak.

Martin Redmayne, the chairman of The Superyachjt Group looks forward to the Superyacht Forum: “Obviously due to COVID-19, we will have to follow the distancing rules, but we will still deliver a powerful Forum with, perhaps, a limit of 300 industry leaders, investors and CEOs, but with the added dimension of live streaming, so hundreds of delegates from around the world who cannot join us, will still be able to participate in the debate.”

In the months leading up to the Superyacht Forum, the Superyacht Group will present a online element, taking place until the event and even after the event is over. More information will be given in the coming days.

METSTRADE celebrates its 35th anniversary

Metstrade director niels klarenbeek sheds light on its achievements, the partnership with the superyacht forum and the vision for 2025….

After The Superyacht Forum marked its three-decade milestone in 2022, METSTRADE is following on closely with its 35-year anniversary in 2023. METSTRADE director Niels Klarenbeek acknowledges the significance of this shared journey, stating, “Our history with The Superyacht Forum goes beyond mere numbers. It’s about mutual growth, shared knowledge and a partnership that complements each other. Our plan for 2023 is not just a celebration but also an evolution of this synergy.”

METSTRADE’s popularity is evident, with the Superyacht Pavilion reaching full capacity well before the event. “It’s exhilarating to see the overwhelming response,” says Klarenbeek. “Our aim has always been to accommodate and cater to the growing needs of the marine industry. That is why, come 2025, METSTRADE will utilise every hall across the entire venue at the Rai [Amsterdam] for the first time, ensuring we match the industry’s growth.”

Network-building remains a cornerstone. Beyond the event's mainstay features such as the Happy Hour and national receptions, attendees will find numerous avenues to connect and collaborate.

“In much the same way as The Superyacht Forum will focus on connecting professionals in the superyacht industry, at METSTRADE, we are striving to maximise the networking opportunities for our visitors also,” says Klarenbeek.

This is why the METSTRADE Breakfast Briefing on November 16 will be open to all Superyacht Forum delegates, who will have the chance to hear one of the industry’s true titans share his insights.

Massimo Perotti, the much-respected CEO of Italian superyacht builder Sanlorenzo , will set the scene from the outset with his keynote speech at this year’s Breakfast Briefing, jointly hosted by METSTRADE and ICOMIA. This committed sustainability advocate and industry leader will give much-anticipated insights into how the leisure marine sector can transition to carbon neutrality.

Perotti’s presentation will be immediately followed by the eagerly awaited unveiling of the winners for the prestigious 2023 DAME Design Awards. The landmark anniversary edition of the event also has other key changes to look out for, as Klarenbeek explains.

“Throughout its history, METSTRADE has been at the forefront of the key leisure marine issues of the day,” says Klarenbeek. “For this 35th-anniversary edition, we are adding a record number of new initiatives, including the Next Generation Propulsion Zone and Foiling Technology Pavilion.

“We are also recognising the importance of people, talent and entrepreneurialism by launching the new Start-Up Pavilion and pitching event. METSTRADE’s long-standing and much-appreciated Young Professionals Club will feature a Career Corner with professional advisors.”

METSTRADE is expanding once again into a total of 11 halls for 2023. The new addition of Croatia and welcome post-pandemic return of China means there will be a record-breaking 28 national pavilions to explore this year, alongside the familiar SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP), Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP), Construction Material Pavilion (CMP) and the new Foiling Technology Pavilion (FTP). Visitors are expected from 116 different countries.

“I am confident that the Foiling Technology Pavilion will provide a major boost to accelerate innovation and economic growth in the foiling segment to the satisfaction of all of those who will have the opportunity to take part in this showcase.”   Fostering Innovation: Start-Up Pavilion In collaboration with Yachting Ventures, METSTRADE debuts the Start-Up Pavilion. Yachting Ventures will source and invite the start-ups chosen to participate and will also organise start-up panel discussions and a start-up pitching competition to take place in the METSTRADE Theatre.

Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures, says, “METSTRADE stands as a significant event in the industry calendar. Collaborating on the Start-Up Pavilion enables us to highlight the potential and innovations of tomorrow.”   Commitment to Sustainability A noteworthy alliance with Water Revolution Foundation underscores METSTRADE’s sustainability focus. The introduction of the Superyacht Sustainability Route in 2022 was a testament to this commitment, directing attendees to exhibitors who meet the Foundation’s stringent sustainability criteria.

The Superyacht Sustainability Route will return, with the objective of assisting purchasers at METSTRADE 2023 by providing reliable third-party confirmation of the environmental credentials of suppliers. As the industry strives for more rigorous sustainability standards, this information is becoming vital across all sectors.

Klarenbeek adds, “As the Water Revolution Foundation’s Database of Sustainable Solutions builds on the availability of independent third-party verification, we aim to bring more transparency to the innovative environmental impact reduction activities of the superyacht sector and its supply chain.”
