Testimonials
Chartering the PowerPlay made our trip from Sandusky to Put-in-Bay a major highlight of my bachelor party weekend. No worries traveling with an experienced captain and yacht loaded with everything you need for fun!”
— Mike/Bachelor party to Put-in-Bay
I thought my birthday during COVID was going to be so lame, but then all of my friends surprised me with a Party on the PowerPlay! We took a beautiful sunset cruise to the border of Canada and had an amazing party afterward on the yacht! Best. Night. Ever.
— Helen/Birthday party at Put-in-Bay
Captain conveniently picked up me and my future wife in his Zodiac Deluxe Dinghy at Catawba State Park and shuttled us out to the PowerPlay. We cruised over to South Bass Island where we spent the afternoon swimming at anchor in the sun. Thanks, Captain Jim!
— John/Pre-engagement trip to Put-in-Bay
My bachelorette crew came down from Michigan for a four-day bachelorette extravaganza. By far the highlight of the weekend was Friday’s PowerPlay charter. The dinghy ride was amazing. Having so much fun we extended the charter a couple of more hours. We’ll definitely be back this summer.

Thoughts from the owners
Why We Started Great Lakes Boat Charters
It is true, Great Lakes Boat Charters serves our customers by providing a comfortable and safe boat, removing the requirement of boating experience, and providing destination and activity ideas (plus all the equipment)…all delivered at a fraction of the cost real boat ownership.
But that is not what we are about.
The idea and drive to start our company came from the many years of family members and friends sharing their time and their boats with our family. With the gift of time to reflect on our boating experience, we came to realize the many blessings in sharing time together on the water cruising, swimming, trying out new watersports, fishing and island hopping all summer long.
When you step onto the dock, the sky feels bluer, the sun brighter, the landscape greener. Once we untie the lines and leave the dock, let the “untethering” from the day to day life on land begin.
Hope to see you on the water!

Yacht Rental Ohio
If one allows their mind to drift away from the endless expanses of the ocean, past the rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, one might just stumble upon an altogether different yet equally enchanting aquatic terrain. A journey along the cerulean veins that crisscross the American landscape - the rivers. Among them, the Ohio River, a magnificent watercourse that stretches over 980 miles, carrying with it the lifeblood of the continent and a history of exploration, trade, and recreation.
Why Rent a Yacht in Ohio
In the heart of the American Midwest, we find a treasure trove of picturesque beauty and tranquility. This is not the territory of blue whales or great white sharks. Rather, it is the realm of the freshwater mussel, the bald eagle, and an array of fish species darting beneath the surface of the water.
What better way to appreciate this rich and diverse ecosystem than by sailing gently along its lengths in the comfort of a yacht? The reason to rent a yacht in Ohio goes beyond a mere weekend getaway. It’s about a voyage of discovery, an intimate communion with nature and an immersive journey through American history.
As you voyage down the Ohio River, you will encounter river towns steeped in historical significance and architectural beauty, each with their unique story, and if you listen carefully, the river whispers those tales on the rustling wind.
Ohio River Odyssey: Notable Destinations
Taking a yacht journey along the Ohio River, you will find a myriad of destinations that are simply captivating. Each stop has a story to tell, an experience to offer. It’s a dance between the tranquil, undisturbed natural wonders and the bustling, vibrant riverside towns, each with its unique charm and character.
🚢 Cincinnati: The Queen City
Begin your journey in Cincinnati, a city that proudly hails as the Queen City of the West. Dock your yacht at the public landing, a historic wharf at the heart of the city, and venture onto the land. The cityscape's stunning architecture, a blend of historic and modern, paints a picturesque panorama along the riverfront. Be sure to visit the Cincinnati Museum Center, located in the majestic Union Terminal, and take a leisurely stroll in the Smale Riverfront Park.
🚢 Louisville: The Derby City
Moving downstream, Louisville, Kentucky, is another must-visit destination. It's not just about the famous Kentucky Derby. The city's waterfront park is an idyllic oasis, and the vibrant downtown area is filled with restaurants, shops, and attractions. Here, you can enjoy the southern hospitality the city is renowned for. Don't miss a visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and indulge in some local bourbon, for which Kentucky is justly famed.
🚢 Madison: A Historic Treasure
Further along, you'll come across the charming river town of Madison, Indiana. Madison is home to one of the country's largest National Historic Landmark Districts, with over 133 blocks of historic buildings in Federal, Italianate, and Greek Revival styles. Explore the quaint streets, visit the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site, and enjoy the small-town charm.
🚢 Cleveland': Heart of the North Coast
Cleveland 's marinas offer yacht enthusiasts a refreshing gateway to Lake Erie's beauty. Enjoy world-class facilities and skyline views while exploring nearby cultural attractions. With its unique blend of urban charm and nautical elegance, Cleveland is a must-visit yacht destination for every sailor.
🚢 Paducah: The Quilt City
Paducah, Kentucky, is the next stop. Known as Quilt City, USA, Paducah has a vibrant arts scene. The National Quilt Museum, an artistic jewel that attracts visitors worldwide, is a must-see. The historic downtown with its floodwall murals depicting the city's history is another interesting sight.
🚢 Cairo: The Confluence City
Finally, arrive at Cairo, Illinois , the southernmost city in the state and the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. This geographical junction carries profound historical significance as it served as a strategic military post during the Civil War. While Cairo itself has faced significant challenges, its unique location and historical context make it a notable stop on your journey.
🚢 Wheeling: The Friendly City
Situated in West Virginia, Wheeling is an inviting city that sits on a picturesque island in the middle of the Ohio River. Wheeling Island offers a unique blend of Victorian-era charm and contemporary entertainment with a historic race track and casino. The Capitol Theatre, home to the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, is also a remarkable destination for music and culture lovers.
🚢 Marietta: A Riverboat Town
Marietta, Ohio, is a quintessential riverboat town. As the first permanent settlement of the Northwest Territory, Marietta offers a unique glimpse into America's past. The Ohio River Museum and the Campus Martius Museum recount the river's history and its role in the westward expansion of the United States. Marietta's Victorian downtown with its cobblestone streets, unique shops, and eateries is worth a leisurely exploration.
🚢 Portsmouth: The City of Murals
Proceeding downstream, Portsmouth, Ohio, comes into view. Known as the City of Murals, Portsmouth's floodwall is adorned with over 60 paintings depicting the region's history. The murals are an open-air gallery, a testament to the transformative power of art and a profound sense of community.
🚢 Evansville: The River City
Evansville, Indiana, or the River City, offers a blend of modern attractions and historic charm. The Riverfront district is a hub of activity with restaurants, shops, and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science. A little outside the city, Angel Mounds State Historic Site provides insights into the life of the prehistoric indigenous people who inhabited this area.
🚢 Henderson: Nature's Paradise
The voyage continues to Henderson, Kentucky. This city offers a haven for nature enthusiasts. The Sloughs Wildlife Management Area and John James Audubon State Park are renowned bird-watching spots, with a wide range of bird species, including the majestic bald eagle.
On a yacht, navigating the Ohio River, you're not just visiting destinations. You're stepping into a fluid timeline, exploring history and culture, embraced by nature, while indulging in the comforts of modern luxury. It's a journey that engages all your senses, a journey that is more about the voyage than the destination.
What to Consider Before Renting a Yacht in Ohio
Like any journey into the natural world, there are considerations one must keep in mind before setting off. Think of it as preparing for an expedition, not unlike those early explorers who first charted the course of this great river.
⛵ The Vessel
The first, of course, is the vessel itself. Yachts come in various sizes and forms, each designed with a specific purpose and water type in mind. You might picture a mega yacht cruising through the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, but the reality on the Ohio River is somewhat different. You need a vessel that is both luxurious for your comfort and suitable for the conditions of a river.
⛵ Seasonality
The second consideration is the time of year. Like any large body of water, the Ohio River has its moods, its seasonal changes that affect not only the sailing conditions but also the experience of the journey itself. Spring offers an explosion of life, both floral and faunal, as the natural world awakens from its winter slumber. Summer brings with it long, languid days perfect for cruising and exploring, while autumn provides a display of color that truly must be seen to be believed.
⛵ Local Knowledge
Lastly, but certainly not least, one must consider the guidance of local experts. Navigating a river requires knowledge of its currents, its sandbars, and its hidden obstacles. Engaging with a reputable yacht charter company in Ohio will not only provide you with a suitable vessel but also with the necessary knowledge to navigate the river safely.
Best Yacht for Ohio Waters
Determining the best yacht for Ohio waters is as much an art as it is a science. It requires a harmony of comfort, practicality, and an understanding of the river itself. A river yacht is typically smaller and more maneuverable than its ocean-going counterparts. It will also have a shallower draft to navigate the varying depths of the river.
A Motor Yacht is an excellent choice for the Ohio River. These vessels are designed for smooth waters and offer ample space for relaxation and enjoyment without compromising on maneuverability or safety. The addition of modern amenities such as GPS navigation, depth sounders, and radar can greatly enhance your voyage, allowing you to focus on the experience itself.
However, the best yacht is not merely about specifications and amenities. It’s about the connection it offers between you and the world around you. It’s the vessel that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and sensations of the Ohio River. The yacht that encourages you to explore and discover, while also offering a haven of comfort and relaxation.
So, cast off your preconceptions about yachting as a strictly ocean-bound pastime. Embrace the unique charm of a river voyage, the sense of history, the connection with nature, and the sheer enjoyment of the experience. The Ohio River is waiting, and it’s a journey not to be missed.
Frequently Asked Questions: Embarking on Your Voyage of Discovery
As we voyage together down the majestic Ohio River, questions may bubble up from the depths of your curiosity. It is only natural when venturing into the embrace of such a rich and diverse landscape, your mind begins to churn like a paddlewheel against the river's flow. Local News | Chardon picks Fine Arts Association to operate space on square
Vacant theater will be available to rent.
Chardon City Council has chosen the Fine Arts Association to operate the meeting space at 106 Water St. for classes and programming, and the vacant 1939 movie theater would be open for rental to any interested group.
The rental structure approved at council’s March 14 meeting is similar to one the city uses for the Heritage House and Chalet. Vice-Mayor Heather Means said the theater costs the city at least $25,000 per year, which includes utility and maintenance costs.
Interested parties can rent the theater for a minimum of one week at a time at a rate of $2,000. If rented for a month, the fourth week would be free. All fees would be due at the time of booking and would include a 50% deposit of the total rental fee ($3,000 for a month) and a $2 million general liability insurance policy.
Concessions would be allowed, but renters would have to provide their own alcohol license and possibly some of their own theatrical equipment to supplement what remains in the theater. Rentals will be done on a first-come, first-serve in-person basis starting April 2.
City officials said there is no plan to invest additional funds in the theater at this time, no intent to lower fees on non-performance days, and no lower fees for Chardon residents.
“This has been a difficult process,” said Mayor Christopher Grau at the meeting. “We have met with many business organizations and individuals who have thoroughly educated us on operations of a community theater.”
Grau said that Chardon City Council had always been engaged in issues surrounding the theater during the previous “five or six years” when both Thrive and Geauga Lyric Theater Guild occupied the space.
“We’re not trying to hide anything at all,” Grau said of their latest plan for the space. “What we’re trying to do is get things moving.”
Multiple organizations had shown an interest in the space, including the Rabbit Run Community Arts Association in Lake County and Curtain 440 in Geauga County, which is directed by Chardon resident Angela Miloro-Hansen.
FAA Executive Director Paul Holm was present at the March 14 council meeting with a prepared statement to express gratitude for the council’s decision.
Several residents spoke at the meeting before the decision was revealed, many in support of Curtain 440’s proposal.
“Chardon has become one of my favorite places in the world because of what you have going on,” said Painesville resident and frequent GLTG and Curtain 440 collaborator Erica Lohan. “Any theater that is going to go in there is going to thrive. But one of my favorite parts of Chardon is its local community. It scares me that you guys are looking outside of Chardon to fill that space.”
“I work in Chardon and feel it is a second home,” said Middlefield resident Evan Graham. “I’m concerned about the lack of transparency in the process. A lack of communication and equal opportunity for other interested parties.”
Other groups that showed an interest in managing the space, however, do not seem to think they would apply to rent it.
“My feelings with renting the theater going forward is it’s a nice utopian idea,” Miloro-Hansen says of the space she hoped to use. “But at the prices they are putting forward I just don’t know how feasible it’s going to be for any production company in the area.”
She expressed concern that the prices set also do not include all equipment necessary for a production to be mounted.
Miloro-Hansen estimates that it would cost her group $6,000 for four weeks in addition to the $3,000 deposit just to have the space. In addition to royalties for three-weeks of a performance that would have to be paid for any production – that would have exactly one week to prepare technically unless additional time was rented – a deposit for a December show she was considering would require the deposit due as early as April 2.
“I don’t know that is something that really anyone can do in the arts,” she said.
“At this point, I don’t foresee Rabbit Run having any interest in a weekly rental,” said Brint Learned, Rabbit Run’s executive director.
Miloro-Hansen said she did have concerns that programming offered at 106 Water St. is very similar to programs her company offers in Chardon.
“I wish that we were cultivating Chardon businesses,” she said. “I look forward to seeing how Fine Arts approaches that going forward so that we can collaborate and not compete with one another.”
“It is not our goal to complete, displace, or remove capacity but to add to it,” Holm said in his March 14 statement.

Dear Abby: Best advice? Don’t be a Sugar Mama for freeloading boyfriend

Dear Abby: My boyfriend and I broke up a few months ago but got back together. He moved back in, but he doesn't work, doesn't help with the rent, doesn't pay for groceries but does ask for money for his gambling. What's your advice? Canva stock image
- Abigail Van Buren
Dear Abby: I’ve been with the same guy for almost five years. I was madly in love with him the first three years, but after I had my daughter, things slowly changed. We haven’t been intimate in a while. I had some female issues I wanted to take care of, plus I’m not physically attracted to him anymore. He makes little comments about it to make me feel bad. He doesn’t want to discuss anything, so talking to him is impossible.
We broke up a few months ago but got back together. He moved all his stuff out, so now he makes me feel guilty, telling me he has nothing and our house doesn’t feel like his anymore. By the way, he doesn’t pay for rent or household expenses like groceries, etc. I pay for everything because he doesn’t work. Yet I have to give him money for his gambling addiction.
I don’t want to be with him anymore. But the last time we broke up, he was terribly verbally abusive, and I don’t want to go through that again. What should I do?
-- Indecisive in Illinois
Dear Indecisive: Tell him you no longer want to be his sugar mama; he will have to find someone else to feed him and finance his gambling addiction. Do NOT do it while the two of you are alone. Make sure to have several friends or relatives with you for moral support and to help him collect whatever things he has at your place. If you do, it may curb his verbal abuse. After that, change the locks on your doors and do not admit him to the house again. If he forces his way in, summon the police. If you don’t rid yourself of him, he will suck you dry.
