The Miami shipbuilding story begins with Fogal Boat Yard, Inc. , established by Jay Fogal. This yard was the precursor to what would become one of Miami’s most significant shipbuilding enterprises. In 1939, with new investors on board, the yard was reorganized and renamed the Miami Shipbuilding Corporation .

Located on both sides of the Miami River, between SW 2nd and 3rd Avenues, this shipyard quickly grew in prominence. Its Art Moderne office building at 615 SW 2nd Ave even played a role in pop culture, acting as the police station in the TV show “Miami Vice.” Unfortunately, this iconic building was eventually demolished.

Wartime Contributions

During World War II, Miami Shipbuilding Corporation made substantial contributions to the war effort. The yard became the second-largest wartime employer in Miami, known for developing the famous “Miamis.” These were technically known as Air-Sea Rescue Boats (ASR) and were designed by Dair Long.

The shipyard built 740 crash boats during the war—329 in their own yard and 411 through subcontracts. These boats were essential for rescuing downed aviators and played a crucial role in the US Navy’s operations. The shipyard also produced torpedo boats and other military vessels, showcasing its versatility and capability.

Post-War Developments

After the war, Miami Shipbuilding Corporation shifted its focus to recreational boats and hydrofoils.
