Top 10 Downeast Boats - That You Can Buy for Under $1 Million

Many many years ago, as a young, enthusiastic, and energetic sailor, I had a conversation one evening with an old friend of my father's.

We sat on the engine box top of his motor yacht, quenching our thirst, in the setting sun. His hair, I remember was all white, skin like boot leather and a way of speaking which involved long pauses before even the shortest of his sentences were uttered. I was no doubt naive and honestly, probably rather blinded, by my then unbridled excitement for ocean racing.

I was intrigued and puzzled.

Here was a man I knew who had traveled in sailing yachts, extensively across oceans, before and after the last great war, regaling me with tales of his great passion for and his long experience of, voyaging under sail.

He was, however, rather astonishingly, I thought, ... telling me all this from the stern of a motor yacht which he now owned.

Completely incongruous ... I said to myself at the time!

Why, I asked him, do you own this vessel, when your eyes light up when reminiscing about sailing yachts?

He smiled and then .... after the mandatory long pause, replied: "You will young man someday, if you are fortunate, come to understand."

Fifty years later I possibly do!

Over the years, my reflexes have slowed, my desire to work the foredeck on a cold and windy night has abated some, and the word "easier" has increasingly edged into my conversations. I have learned to channel my energies more selectively. A good night's sleep in a level bunk is now far nearer the top of my mind and yes, I must admit, a large stable platform and the ability to really live...... below decks, while underway have all worked their way into my priorities.

The result is that I pay attention these days, more than ever, to a well built, commodious, power yacht. Having sold our larger sailing yacht, I have been investigating what should be next in the family. I have come to some conclusions!

I must also confess right up front that my eye is particularly drawn to those that have the lines of what most of us call a "down east" style. A low profile, lobster boat lines and slightly less yachty, more working boat look appeal to my nature.

Let me share some of these findings with you and even one or two (if you will permit) of my opinions!

There are many well-built power vessels available on the brokerage market these days.

For the purposes of this article, and reflecting some of my own priorities, I have been guided, (in addition to my prejudice toward my preferred style,) by considerations of quality construction and performance, good or at least reasonable resale value, a strong eye to roominess/comfort and a purchase price of less than 7 figures in US dollars.

I have limited my choice to 10 vessels and must, therefore, of necessity, omit some very good alternatives. I list my choices and comment on them in no particular order.

Top 10 Downeast Boats  - That You Can Buy for Under $1 Million

Image 0984:

The Sabre line has a very solid reputation. Several of these vessels including the 48’ must be a serious candidate when the criteria outlined are all considered. In addition, the brand holds resale value, has well thought out accommodations and several recent design ideas integrated into the traditional look and interior finish. She is large enough to accommodate 2 couples in comfort, each with head and shower. The addition of a captain’s quarters below salon sole allow extra accommodations for crew/family members.

Her expansive foredeck is a great lounging area and her stern cockpit dining table and retractable rear cabin window creates a large outdoor living/entertainment space.

Market offering prices are affected by vessel conditions and options and can vary noticeably depending on the brand and style of the vessel's power. Pros/cons between the Volvo/pod combination, the Cummins/Zeus duo or more traditional straight shaft drives are important considerations here.

  • 48’ models on the brokerage market range from 2012 in the mid $600,000’s to very recent models at or just above $1 Million
  • Sabre 48 models on the brokerage market range from 2012 models in the mid $ 600,000s to very recent models that can reach as high as $ 1,400,000. There are generally a fair amount of options available, so buyers will have a nice selection to choose from.
  • Sabre models in the 40 to 46 size range vary in age and configuration but can be purchased as low as $300,000 for a good quality but older model.

Image 0980:

The Hinckley Company has built a remarkable brand over the years. Their power line includes several vessels in the range of 44’to 55’.

Many Hinckley’s offered on the brokerage market are available at prices which are now more economical, relatively speaking, than at new.

The name brand, the associated appeal to some buyers, the quality of construction and the classic appearance overall, over the decades, maintained their attraction to a segment of the market. For this reason, they are rarely advertised at bargain prices although occasionally examples of this brand come on brokerage, usually due to seller circumstances, at prices which make them within reach of the value buyer.

Again condition, options and maintenance history are always factors. Power plant options are an interesting aspect of these vessels as more and more alternatives become available on the brokerage market, including electronic diesel-jet drive combos.

  • 55’ Talaria 2005-6s offered at slightly over and slightly under $1 Million.
  • 44' Talaria models, 2003-8, offered at $500-800,000.

GRAND BANKS/EASTBAY

Image 0979:

The Grand Banks name has been among the honor gallery for pleasure motor yachts for many years resulting in part from its original line of wood, classic trawler style vessels. Brand construction was converted to fiberglass as this material took its place among boat builders. Eventually the "Classic" design was transformed into the more modern East Bay line, keeping of course a "Down East "look. The vessels have a reputation for quality build, sea kindliness, fine finish and have an enthusiastic and substantial following.

One extremely interesting aspect of this brand is the large number of 40-55 ft vessels of both the classic and East Bay version that are available literally around the world. One can buy a GB and start an adventure from most major international yacht centers, a demonstration of their popularity as a brand and proof of how widely known and accepted they are. The variety of models in this size range also allows a purchaser almost any interior configuration that suits and, in a vintage/price point acceptable.

Grand Banks hold their value well and many of the more popular models are, it seems, always available in brokerage. Newer vintages are now appearing on the resale market with pod drives and seakeepers. The classic line trawlers are numerous on the market and ones in very good condition can be acquired at very reasonable prices.

  • 44’ East Bay from $300,000 to about $1M based on model years ranging from 2003-2017
  • The larger models, with sizes in the range of 50 ft, are also available for well under $900,000

  WESMAC

Image 0985:

The Wesmac brand has a reputation as a very well built, seagoing, commercial grade vessel and as a general statement their pricing reflects that. They are considered my many howeveras not as "yachty" as other brands and tend toward a more serviceable finish and appearance.

The design involves more rear deck working space, with a lobster boat set of lines and not surprisingly less interior cabin space and fewer accommodations than other brands. That said many have been built/converted to yachts, providing owners who wish to spend more time offshore, with sturdy reliable service and less fancy maintenance.

Most on the brokerage market are economical single diesel engine models, although a few twin power do exist. All are straight shaft. Vessels in some lengths are available in fly bridge models in addition to the traditional lobster boat and express design.

Pricing covers a broad range with:

  • 1998 36’ traditional lobster boat design at $260,000
  • 2008 flybridge model at $800,000
  • 2018 46’ for just over $1 Million

Image 0978:

Bruckmann is perhaps less well known than others referred to here but among those who do know them these vessels garner great respect. Builders of both power and sail vessels, the power line tends to the down east styling and is frankly reminiscent of the Talaria from a distance. The largest power production model is the 40' classic, a few of which do come on the brokerage market occasionally.

They are smaller than the other yachts mentioned in this article (being designed around a single double berth cabin) but with a large, airy salon and rear cockpit deck. Single diesel, straight shaft drives and a very nice interior finish cap off a strong and pleasing looking vessel.

  • 2012 Bruckmann 40 version, located in freshwater, low hours, in very good condition, priced at $650000
  • Search Bruckmann Yachts for Sale

Image 0982:

The MJM line burst upon the power yacht scene some years ago, conceived by a very experienced builder, with several new ideas about what would interest older sailors, moving to power. The result was a line of yachts that could perhaps be best described as a "modern version of the old "Down East". Low in profile, slightly reminiscent of a working fishing boat, bright, airy, open space, soft lines and just a hint of being ahead of its design day. Big on the "deck to interior salon space" concept, with a more compact approach to state rooms, a no wood exterior and a less woody interior, means the MJM has trimmed back vessel maintenance, with an eye to not interfering with cocktail hour. Modern strong materials are used throughout.

She will get you there quickly with the planning hull and lots of power. Speaking of power, and depending upon size, these boats are available with diesel straight shaft or stern drives with some of the newer ones featuring pods (Cummins or Volvo IPS). All come with a joystick for easy maneuvering and a design intended to accommodate shorthandedness.

All this comes, however, with a price!

These vessels are available in a broad range of sizes starting from 30’ (they call it 29z) and growing to 56’ in length (the 53z). The larger versions' pricing, both new and used, will well exceed 6 figures. In order to stay under $1M on the brokerage market, some combination of experience and size must be considered. In my opinion the 36z model (which is 39’ LOA) is probably the minimum size that would allow a couple to cruise extendedly, in some comfort.

  • 36z 2012-13 versions offered at about $560,000
  • 40z models (LOA 44’) an '09 and an '11, offered between $650,000 - $850,000
  • Search MJM Yachts for Sale

LITTLE HARBOR

Image 0981:

Little Harbor yachts must be mentioned here, although availability is an issue. They rate extremely high on the price / quality ratio even though new vessel production ended years ago. The Little Harbor is simply a great boat. Most come with the Whisper Jet Drive, but some are available with a diesel straight shaft.

Built for several years by Ted Hood's Company, then constructed overseas, these boats were well designed, well-built and very nicely finished. Although there was the odd one built to 52’ LOA, most of the production line vessels were in the 32’ to 44’ size.

The interior is really designed for one couple cruising, with its single double cabin forward and convertible dinette.

The 42’, 40’and 38’ versions are similar in layout, slightly smaller but of equal quality of course. The Yanmar diesels with shaft or Jet drives, interior yacht finish, a good ride, and a reputation for reliability all produce a beautiful "down east" looking little ship.

Brokerage LH boats, in the range of 15-20 years old, should have their condition and level of maintenance thoroughly verified. Any owner must also know that future care would be very important here. Pricing with these vessels is a very pleasant surprise for this quality.

  • 44’ versions are advertised for under $300,000 and go down from there
  • Prices as low as $125,000 for the smaller models are available
  • Search Little Harbor Yachts for Sale

Image 0977:

This venerable American yacht designer and his products are well known to those of us with some miles under our keel. A standout with sail he eventually was in involved in the production of some very fine power vessels.

These again are a line of yachts that, sadly, are no longer produced, but are part of the well designed, well-built genre of yesteryear still available through resale. All construction was, for its day, first class with traditional interior wood finish and a relatively (by todays standard) simple layout.

These vessels are part of American nautical history and as such, most have been exceptionally well maintained, a reflection of the sophistication of their ownership. All are diesel powered with, of course, straight shaft, as was their time.

  • 1999 40’ Express is a one cabin optional layout with Yanmar power, 2600 hours and a very fine finish with impressive maintenance, listed at $375,000
  • 2005 49’ Express is also a one stateroom vessel, designed to be very roomy and commodious, both below and in the main salon. The 2 Cummins engines have only 1650 hours on them and the interior is impeccable. She is listed at $540,000
  • 56’ Flybridge is a 2 stateroom layout with a roomy fine interior, also apparently well maintained, she is powered by twin Caterpillar diesels, with only approx. 1900 hours on them.

Quality from a few years ago, standing the test of times, at very attractive prices!

Image 0986:

Vicem Yachts are built in Turkey by an established company, family owned. They are not as well-known as many other brands in North America but do have traditional "downeast" good looks and a quality build.

Their traditional construction is composite, cross layered epoxy soaked mahogany strips encased with fiberglass mat and resin. They now can build in cored fiberglass, but this is relatively recent and therefore most vessels on the brokerage market are the composite. The joinery is of a high standard and finished in traditional woods. The vessels are all outfitted with world class mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communications and navigation equipment, with buyer choice as to diesel engines, straight shaft or pod drives. They also boast the ability to modify any layout of their production models to accommodate much of what a new buyer may wish to change.

The builder also provides North American warranties and support. One of the great attractions of this line is pricing, both as to new and on resale. The builder can take advantage of local Turkish labor rates to produce, out of the door, vessels at extremely competitive prices, when compared to the other yachts listed in this article.

This has a trickledown effect on prices in the brokerage market. Provided, as with all used vessels, that she has been well maintained, and that in particular, any additions to hull or decks have been done properly to ensure no water intrusion, these boats can be an attractive alternative.

Another advantage is that there are several choices on the brokerage sheets, sometimes at prices which vary greatly, even as between similar sizes. This builder builds production models from about 33’ up to about 70’ with larger vessels currently being custom.

  • 2005 54’ at $575,000
  • 2007 55’Classic at $580,000
  • 2003 51’at $540,000
  • A virtually new 2019 46’ Classic is available and could possibly be purchased for about $995,000

Image 0983:

For those of you who appreciate a little Italian flair with your traditional "down east" vessel there is this very stylish option, Rivolta. This line of vessels is designed and built in Sarasota, FL by a family with old country origins. With a deep history in sailing, racing power boats and entrepreneurship, the company principals have developed their range of power yachts with a distinctly European flair.

The hull and superstructure retain the typical lines of their down east sisters but the finish and interior styling trend closer to what we see in many modern vessels from "on the continent." These boats as new are available in a range of sizes, all built with local quality construction, world class equipment and are powered with diesels engines of your choice. Interiors are, in keeping with the overall design approach, less "woody", more bright light/white color and more open feeling than some others of their hull style. These are yachts which are a step out in a slightly different direction, but not so far as to be beyond appeal to a typical "downeast" owner.

Two of their most popular vessels are the 44’ Coupe, a 2 cabin 2 head vessel with room and openness. Some were built with diesel- jet drives, an expansive open rear deck with opening transom and large swim platform. The 40’ Coupe, a 2 cabin 1 head vessel, twin diesel power, comes with all the basic accommodations you would expect from a yacht this size.

  • 2009 44’ Coupe with diesels - jet drives at $339,000
  • 2012 44’, straight shaft diesels, at $360,000
  • Several 2005 41’ Coupes at about $225,000

The best small cruising yachts in 2023

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 29, 2023

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

yachts under 1m

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

The best small cruising yachts 2023

yachts under 1m

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

yachts under 1m

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

The latest and greatest yachts under 24 metres

Kate Lardy finds there is a top performer for every purpose in the under 24-metre market...

Otam 58 GTS

A client who asked for “total freedom of expression” is responsible for this new version of Otam’s popular 58 with the Gran Turismo Sport suffix. Named Bad Boys , the 19.2 metre has been restyled by Giuseppe Bagnardi of BG Design Firm with a semi-open deckhouse and more aerodynamic profile. The latter will come in handy when Bad Boys hits 55 knots, thanks to its twin 1,825hp MTUs coupled to ASD14 Arneson surface drives. See her in Cannes in September. otam.it

A new Italian shipyard, Filoyacht, is getting ready to unveil what it’s all about. In July, it launched a stylish 22.6 metre, which it will display at the Cannes and Genoa shows this autumn. Highlights include a foredeck swimming pool, a tender lift aft and fold-down wings that expand the cockpit to almost eight metres wide. Below deck are three guest cabins and separate crew quarters. Two MTUs of 1,630hp each, equipped with Top System surface drives, give a top speed of 46 knots. filoyacht.com

Ferretti Yachts 580

The latest model in Ferretti’s flybridge collection shows how the prolific Italian builder continually improves upon its signature values: comfort, modern luxury and well-being. On the 17.7-metre 580, large expanses of glass and ceiling heights of at least two metres give a sense of spaciousness and wide sea views. The highly customisable model offers two layouts for the lower deck and two decor schemes: warm classic and fresh contemporary. The first hull will launch in October for a debut at Düsseldorf in January 2023. ferretti-yachts.com

Ocean Eco 60 Coupé

This forward-thinking catamaran from ALVA Yachts is available with fully electric drives and comes fuel-cell ready. The new 18.4-metre Coupé version has an expansive coachroof with 80 square metres of solar cells. Battery banks store power from these and the generators, and run two 250kW electric motors, which give a top speed of 20 knots. Named for its transatlantic ability, the catamaran has a 2,800-nautical-mile range. The first is in build for avid divers who appreciate the 230 square metres of interior and exterior living space. alva-yachts.com

Libeccio 13.5 Cabin

A new version of Gozzi Mimì’s 13.5-metre flagship is its most spacious and liveable yet. The Naples shipyard has taken the classic planing gozzo and added heaps of comfort in its accommodation, which comprise three cabins – one double and two with twin berths – and two heads. Yanmar engines, each rated 370hp, give a top speed of 30 knots. The Genoa show in October will be the site of its world premiere. gozzimimi.it

It’s a delightful mix of old and new on Apreamare’s 14.7-metre flagship Gozzo, debuting in Cannes this autumn. The nostalgic design respects tradition, while comfort and performance are as modern as can be. The single-level deck has a walkaround path that encircles a sunbed, cockpit dining for 10 and bow seating, while a cabin below deck sleeps four to six. The variable deadrise deep-V hull accommodates a pair of 600hp Cummins diesels or 650hp Volvo Penta IPS drives, each allowing at least 30 knots of speed. apreamare.it

Nerea Yacht, which burst onto the yachting scene in early 2019 with the stylish NY24, is getting ready to reveal its next chapter at Cannes. Its 12-metre flagship exemplifies its “Made in Italy” ethos with an elegant design by ideaeITALIA that references automotive styling, finished in a superyacht-like herringbone teak and polished stainless steel. The highly customisable model allows prospective buyers to pick the layout, materials, finishes and engine room equipment, including a choice of inboards (gasoline or diesel) or outboards. A nifty feature is the innovative three-step COSMO aft platform, developed with Besenzoni, which lowers into the water or rises above it for diving or reaching the dock. nereayacht.com

wallypower58

This new Wally heralds the future, marking the start of a revamp of the entire range. It translates to pure lines and an enviable entertaining deck that’s open to the surroundings while protecting guests from the elements. Folding bulwarks add 25 square metres to the aft deck, and the lower deck, naturally lit from above, sleeps four for overnighting. The 17.3-metre boat tops out at between 36 and 38 knots, depending on which horsepower Volvo IPS drives are chosen. wally.com

Princess Yachts’ newest F-series yacht is indeed fit for royalty. As the British builder says, it offers “a new standard of refinement, featuring enriched upholstery and timber finishes and inlaid polished stainless steel”. The 17.7-metre flybridge yacht also has updated exterior styling with larger hull windows that brighten the three guest cabins below. Its 33-knot performance is courtesy of twin Volvo D13-900 engines. princessyachts.com

Absolute Yachts’ new 22.8-metre flagship relishes in the space it offers. Big windows and high ceilings characterise the interiors, while the decks – devoid of structural furniture – are versatile open-air lounges fringed by glass parapets for clear sea views. Full walkaround covered side decks are another bonus, as is the owner’s cabin forward on an intermediary deck between main and lower decks. See its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September and at Fort Lauderdale in October. absoluteyachts.com

Squadron 58

There are a few firsts for Fairline in this new 17.7-metre model. Most notable is the builder’s foray into beach club living: the cockpit and aft platform transform into a lounge by the sea with fold-down balconies to port and starboard; there is flexible and modular cockpit seating, and a glass transom for views aft; and there’s also an innovative hi-lo platform that can both hold the tender and double in length for sun loungers. The first hull will splash in November for a January 2023 debut at Düsseldorf. fairline.com

Prestige 690

French yacht company Prestige is adding a sparkle to its brand with a newly inked partnership with Swarovski. Superyacht designers are very familiar with the Austrian brand’s custom lighting elements and speciality wall panels, seen on many of the world’s yachts. Now a limited-edition 21.5-metre Prestige 690 flybridge yacht incorporates subtle and elegant crystal elements in its interior. Custom bejewelled panels, which on larger walls such as in the owner’s cabin, alternate with grey grooved oak and mirrors, enhance guest spaces on both main and lower decks. The goal is to create a sensory experience and a modern luxurious home at sea. prestige-yachts.com

CL Yachts will introduce the newest member of its CLB line at the Newport International Boat Show in September. As the smallest in the line, the 19.7-metre flybridge yacht has been designed for owner-operators, although buyers of the first two hulls opted for the optional crew quarters. Both hulls use twin Volvo Penta IPS1050 pods with docking assist and have at-rest fin stabilisation. The interiors are modern – with lowering windows in the saloon plus a flip-up window in the galley that serves the aft deck. clyachts.com

Daychaser 48

When Barton & Gray Mariners Club needed more boats to satisfy its growing membership, it commissioned 10 custom 14.6-metre boats to be designed by Zurn Yacht Design and built at Boston Boatworks. Dayboating is the focus, and on-deck amenities include an open-air galley, bow lounge and plenty of water toy stowage. bostonboatworks.com ; zurnyachts.com ; bartonandgray.com

Silvercat 40CC

First revealed at the Dubai International Boat Show in March, Gulf Craft’s new 12.2-metre centre console catamaran with a 4.1-metre beam offers a vast and stable platform for fishing or watersports, easily taking 12 on board. A draught of less than 50cm means nowhere is out of reach. Two to four outboards of 300hp to 400hp each provide the power. gulfcraftinc.com

Greenline 58 Fly

The solar roof on this new 18.2-metre flybridge yacht gives a hint that this is something different. Greenline Yachts’ boats uniquely come with a choice of efficient conventional diesel, hybrid or fully electric drives, while solar power runs all appliances on board. Whatever the propulsion choice, the 58 Fly’s layout by Marco Casali is eminently liveable, including a main-deck galley aft conveniently close to the cockpit dining area, and three cabins below deck with the option of a skipper’s cabin. greenlinehybrid.com

At 55 knots, this express boat makes quick work of a jaunt to a secluded bay and, once there, its 90cm draught will come in handy. Legacy Superyachts by the Lazzara family is behind the new boat, conceived initially as a tender to an in-build L-135 yacht. At 21.3 metres, it would be a big tender indeed. The sizeable open beach deck can carry two jet skis or a 4.3-metre tender, and there is direct access to this deck from a lounge on the lower deck, which has quarters for six guests. legacysuperyachts.com

Nordhavn 51

As they say, good things come to those that wait. Nordhavn currently has 23 owners waiting for the 15.5-metre N51 – the first hull of which is on track for an April 2023 launch. The big sister to the very popular N41, which debuted in late 2020, this two-cabin passage-maker adds an extra head and a flybridge. It is being built to CE Category A certification for serious ocean use. nordhavn.com

Trident 650 EVO

Outer Reef Yachts incorporated its clients’ wishes for more volume and comfort into the latest Ward Setzer-designed Trident series model, currently in build. As an evolved version of the Trident 620, the 19.8-metre yacht offers more space in the galley, saloon aft, boat deck, aft deck and flybridge, as well as an extra en suite cabin. Performance-wise, it benefits from Volvo Penta’s second-generation Electronic Vessel Control system, coupled with a conventional transmission and SeaTorque enclosed shaft drive system. outerreefyachts.com

Popular Cruiser Yachts Under 30 Feet Long Overall Specs & Key Performance Indicators

Welcome to this ever-growing gallery of some of the most popular production cruiser yachts under 30 feet (9.1m) long overall - but as you'll see, it's more than just a gallery.

Small cruising boats like these are ideal for pottering along the coast but, properly equipped and in the right hands of course, are capable of impressive offshore passages.

The vast majority of cruiser yachts in this size range are sloops but a few, such as the Shannon 28, the Victoria 26 and the Vancouver 27, are cutters.

This Luxury Superyacht For ''Visionary Billionaires'' Can Remain Under Water For 4 Weeks

The widely reported price estimate for the Migaloo M5 is about $2 billion.

A company in Austria is developing a huge, submersible luxury superyacht intended for ''visionary billionaires'', the New York Post reported. Migaloo has revealed its ambitious plans for what it claims will be the ''world's only private submersible superyacht,'' offering ''a not-yet-existing alternative to large privately owned surface vessels.''

This submarine, Migaloo M5 , would measure 165.8 meters in length and 23 meters across at its widest point, with a range of around 15,000 kilometres and a speed of up to 20 knots when surfaced (or 12 knots when underwater). It will be equipped to hold 20 passengers and 40 crew members, dive to a depth of 820 feet (250 metres), and stay submerged for four weeks.

Customisation for customers is also available. Migaloo says, ''The wished dimensions of the submarine-yacht hybrid, the exterior styling and the interior design are up to the owners' preferences.”

As per the company website, the yacht will include a helipad, a swimming pool and spa, a gym, an art gallery cinema, and a party area with a DJ booth, along with plenty of spaces to lounge or dine. There will also be optional extras including a hot air balloon and underwater shark-feeding station.

The company has also partnered with US security experts SAFE and promises a level of protection that ''even James Bond would envy.''

''In a world filled with uncertainties, MIGALOO Private Submersible Fortresses redefine preparedness, making them the ultimate solution for any protection scenarios, for submerged travelling to safe areas or in case of any other catastrophic events.MIGALOO's partner SAFE describes a Private Submersible Superyacht as the epitome of security, autonomy, self-reliance and an embodiment of absolute freedom. MIGALOO Private Submersible Fortresses are more than a means of escape; they are a symbol of resilience and preparedness,'' a note on the website reads.

Migaloo CEO and founder Christian Gumpold told  The Times , “Our target group are visionary billionaires with or without existing superyacht experience who have extraordinary demands for exclusivity, safety, adventure…''

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

As for the price, Mr Gumpold said, ''There is no estimated cost as every project is fully custom designed according to the owner's wishes and preferences. As superyacht project sums are typical several hundred millions euros, a private submersible superyacht would be within this price range.''

However, the widely reported estimate for the Migaloo M5 is about $2 billion.

Move aside, billionaire bunkers — this company is building superyacht submersibles for the mega-rich.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Talk about making a splash.

Move over, billionaire bunkers — because Austrian company Migaloo is bringing the ultimate in luxury to the depths of the ocean with its groundbreaking concept: the private submersible superyacht.

Forget sprawling mansions, this is the era of underwater extravagance.

Migaloo has unveiled its ambitious vision for what it touts as the “world’s one and only private submersible superyacht,” presenting “a not-yet-existing alternative to large privately owned surface vessels.”

The next billionaire's project focuses on building a superyacht submersible that can remain under water for up to four weeks.

Imagine descending 820 feet into the azure depths, and in the confines of a luxury vessel.

Dubbed the M5, this submarine marvel boasts dimensions that rival the grandeur of any floating palace, stretching 545 feet in length and 75 feet across at its widest point. And with a range of 9,320 miles, it’s poised to explore the farthest reaches of the ocean.

But luxury isn’t just about size; it’s about customization.

Migaloo understands this, offering its elite clientele a blank canvas.

It can fit a helipad.

From helipads to hot air balloons, underwater shark-feeding stations to sub-tenders for aquatic adventures, the options are as limitless as the depths themselves.

Security is paramount in this world of excess, and Migaloo doesn’t disappoint.

Partnering with US security experts SAFE, it promises a level of protection that even James Bond would envy. It’s a private submersible fortress, ensuring the safety of both occupants and valuables alike.

superyacht submersible

“Owners are looking for privacy, security and protection for themselves, their guests and their valuables,” CEO Christian Gumpold states on Migaloo’s website.

The vessel could remain submerged for up to four weeks at a time.

Of course, such exclusivity comes at a price.

While the exact cost remains a closely guarded secret, estimates hover around a staggering $2 billion, with maintenance costs likely to add even more to the bill.

superyacht submersible

Yet, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen such audacious concepts.

Aston Martin flirted with the idea of a luxury submarine back in 2017, while Migaloo itself made waves with their floating island concept, Kokomo Ailand.

The question remains: will the M5 become a reality, or will it remain a tantalizing dream for the super-rich?

Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: the era of billionaire basement bunkers is officially submerged.

But let’s hope it’s fate is nothing like the Titanic submersible which imploded last summer , killing five, including Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Homeowners score victory against squatters in New York after landlord handcuffed in $1M home heist

Christina Coutler

April 24, 2024

jss1

The "optics" of a homeowner handcuffed after changing the locks on a squatter in her  Queens home  worth $1 million pushed New York lawmakers to enact a harsh new law to protect property owners, a real estate attorney told Fox News Digital.

A portion of New York's 2024 state budget agreement, signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul Monday, specifically excludes squatters from tenant protections under state law.

The language defines a squatter as someone staying on a property  without permission from its owner  or the owner's representative. This wording, lawmakers said, will make it easier for police to intervene in squatting cases, sparing homeowners months or even years in housing court.

State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton said "no one should return home to find their property seized by squatters, who now have more rights on their property than they do.

"For too long, my constituents have grappled with the current reality where individuals unlawfully occupy their spaces without any recourse. We witness distressing scenarios unfold in the news week after week — hardworking homeowners facing legal repercussions for rightfully reclaiming their own property from individuals who brazenly occupy it without consent."

Vancouver approves joining state’s opioid settlement; city to get nearly $1M in deal with Johnson & Johnson Updated 1 day ago

Funds to combat opioid addiction under agreement.

A bag of Narcan, a brand of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, stands at the ready April 4 at a homeless encampment in downtown Vancouver.

On Monday, the Vancouver City Council signed off on joining an opioid settlement between the state of Washington and Johnson & Johnson over the pharmaceutical company’s marketing practices that helped fuel the opioid epidemic in Washington.

The city will receive nearly $1 million to combat opioid addiction under this agreement.

This settlement is one of many between the state and opioid distributors and retailers such as CVS, Walgreens and Walmart. In total, the state has recovered more than $1.2 billion.

Nearly $500 million from lawsuit settlements will go to local jurisdictions; the rest will go to the state.

Vancouver will receive 1.73 percent of the total that is going to local governments, or roughly $8.5 million, according to the attorney general’s office.

Vancouver’s funds will go to the Southwest Region Opioid Abatement Council , which allows local governments, including Vancouver, Camas and Washougal, to spend settlement funds received from manufacturers, distributors and retailers of opioids, a class of drugs that relieve pain but can be highly addictive.

The total settlement from Johnson & Johnson is $123 million in a one-time payment. It is contingent on each of the 37 litigating local governments joining the settlement by May 11, according to a memo by city staff .

The opioid abatement council will be responsible for monitoring the distribution of opioid funds to programs and services; developing and maintaining an online public dashboard for the publication of data for expenditures of opioid funds; collecting additional outcome-related data to evaluate the use of opioid funds; and hearing complaints from participating local governments about alleged failure to use opioid funds for approved purposes or comply with reporting requirements.

ITV boss reveals Mr Bates vs The Post Office drama made loss of around £1m

I TV boss Kevin Lygo has revealed the hit drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office made a loss of around a million pounds as he discussed the pressure broadcasters are facing due to increased competition from more media outlets.

The ITV show, detailing how hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system, prompted public outrage and helped put the Horizon scandal under the spotlight.

Alongside airing on ITV, the corporation announced last month that 12 foreign broadcasters had bought the right to show it, but this was not enough for them to break even.

Mr Lygo, the managing director of media and entertainment of ITV, told the Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV) spring conference on Wednesday: “Mr Bates has made a loss of something like a million pounds and we can’t continually do this.

“Of course, some things are very profitable on the channel, and some things aren’t.

“But it’s a challenge to be able to fund some of the things that aren’t, obviously, of international appeal.

“We’re hoping this may be because it caused such a furore here that maybe sales will pick up, but there’s no evidence of it yet.

“If you’re in Lithuania , four hours on the British Post Office? Not really, thank you very much. So you can see the challenges here.”

He said the challenge for mainstream television broadcasters at the moment is “getting enough audiences to turn up on the night” to watch their shows.

Lygo explained that five or six years ago, they would have expected a show like Mr Bates to bring in around six or seven million viewers but that now an overnight audience rating of four million is as “good as you get”.

The ITV boss also said he knew the show was “emotional” and “well told” after the first watch, but admitted he did not realise how much of a stir it would cause.

The show brought the issue back to the attention of the public and parliament, with the former Post Office boss Paula Vennells later announcing she planned to hand back her CBE following the scandal.

Mr Lygo said: “These days, it is harder and harder to guess in advance now what something is going to do and whether people will turn up at all.

“There is so much choice and competition now in your homes every night… Everything that’s ever been made, you can watch now and there is some wonderful stuff out there, it’s quite hard to find.

“But the competition, none of us have ever seen anything like this and that’s the real pressure on the production community, on commercial broadcasters, in getting sufficient audiences and the right audiences for various commercial partners…

“That’s the reason we’re all a bit tense and nervous these days.”

Due to pressure on the broadcaster from various angles, ITV is currently trying to save £150 million.

Discussing how ITV’s cost-saving measures will affect viewers, Mr Lygo said: “In the first instance, we’re trying to find every penny that we can, not on the screen.

“So we’ve got to turn over every stone in the office, so to speak, to make cuts there. To really, yet again, re-examine what it is we should do, what we don’t have to do, how can we change the way we’re doing things.”

He also said that the broadcaster is looking at whether technology and artificial intelligence can be utilised to help them make “programmes more efficiently and cheaper”.
