Quarter-billion dollar superyacht berths in Northland

One of the world's most exclusive superyachts has berthed in the Northland port of Ōpua for a two-week stay.

The 80-metre Artefact is owned by Canadian tech entrepreneur Mike Lazaridis, best known for creating the BlackBerry mobile device.

Built in Germany in 2020 at an estimated cost of $240 million and named Motor Yacht of the Year in 2021, Artefact is one of the world's biggest superyachts by volume.

It is also believed to be the biggest motor yacht to visit the Bay of Islands.

The vessel arrived just after 1pm on Tuesday and was piloted to Ōpua wharf by the harbourmaster vessel Waikare.

Artefact is expected to stay in the Bay of Islands until New Year's Day.

It boasts a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, a range of 5300 nautical miles and a crew of 17, including two chefs and a sous chef.

The vessel is notable for the sheer amount of glass on the passenger decks - 70 tonnes of glass went into its construction - and interior features such as a high-ceilinged tai chi room designed so that practitioners of the martial art can hold a sword above their heads.

Lazaridis, 62, was born in Turkey to Greek parents, who moved to Canada when he was a child. At the age of 12, he won a prize for reading every science book in the library at Windsor, his home town in Ontario.

After founding BlackBerry, he went on to specialise in quantum computing. He has donated large sums of money to theoretical physics research.

When Lazaridis was nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2014, he was described as the father of what later became known as the smartphone.

It was not known whether he was on board when Artefact docked on Tuesday afternoon.

Irwin Wilson, commercial manager of port authority Far North Holdings, said the visit of the "magnificent" vessel was a sign of the Bay of Islands' post-Covid recovery and a bumper season on the water.

Artefact was joined in the bay on Tuesday by the boutique cruise ship Crystal Symphony, one of a record 93 cruise ships expected this season.

Though many more small cruise ships were calling in this year, the number of passengers would also be a record as long as there were no cancellations due to weather or other factors this year.

The season would ramp up after January 18 with three ships on one day on 31 January. The biggest ship, Ovation of the Seas with 4180 passengers, was due back on February 12.

Wilson said cruise ships played an important role in the economy of the Bay of Islands, and Northland, because they brought "fresh money" into the region rather than just the money locals recycling among themselves.

Montenegro Office: History

The history of Rockstar Yachts goes back to 2016 when an experienced yacht broker Alex Reev, managing partner of the Azimut / Benetti office in Montenegro at that time, decided to develop the yacht business on his own.

Together with his partner, they registered a yacht brokerage company in Tivat, Montenegro. The main activity of the new company was the sale of new and used motor yachts in South Adriatic region.

During the first three years, they sold and delivered over 30 luxury yachts for clients from Europe, the USA, and the countries of the former CIS.

Trinity motor yacht Rockstar now for sale with Denison

The 49 metre motor yacht Rockstar has changed central agencies and is now listed for sale by Kurt Bosshardt at Denison Yacht Sales .

Rockstar was built by US superyacht yard Trinity Yachts to a design by Geoff Van Aller and was delivered in 2009, when she was named Blind Date . She went on to receive a Judges’ Special Commendation at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards for her innovative layout and build quality. A contemporary, comfortable interior by Evan K. Marshall is in shades of grey and cream with splashes of purples and pinks. The saloon and dining room boast spectacular light fittings and are lined with black and white stills of 1950s and 1960s Hollywood film stars.

Accommodation in this yacht for sale is for 12 guests in five cabins featuring a spectacular forward-facing, split-level owner’s suite on the main deck with a private lounge, his and her bathrooms, excellent storage facilities and 280 degree views over the ocean. The stylishly appointed guest accommodation is housed on the lower deck in three double cabins with king size beds and a twin cabin with a Pullman berth, which can be converted to a double queen cabin. All cabins have full en suite facilities.

Twin 2,250hp Caterpillar engines give her a cruising speed of 14 knots and a maximum speed of 18 knots.

Montenegro Office: History

The history of Rockstar Yachts goes back to 2016 when an experienced yacht broker Alex Reev, managing partner of the Azimut / Benetti office in Montenegro at that time, decided to develop the yacht business on his own.

Together with his partner, they registered a yacht brokerage company in Tivat, Montenegro. The main activity of the new company was the sale of new and used motor yachts in South Adriatic region.

During the first three years, they sold and delivered over 30 luxury yachts for clients from Europe, the USA, and the countries of the former CIS.

In 2019, Alex Reev bought out a share from his partner and became a 100% owner of the brokerage firm. At this time, the company name was changed to Rockstar Yachts.

Same year Rockstar Yachts signed its first distribution agreement with Groupe Beneteau , becoming the official distributor of Prestige Yachts in Montenegro.

In addition to Prestige Yachts, Beneteau Group includes such brands for sale, as Beneteau , Jeanneau , Lagoon , Four Winns , and Wellcraft .

In 2021 the Company relocated its head office to Porto Montenegro , one of the most luxurious superyacht marinas in the world.

A year later Rockstar Yachts expanded its distribution business to become the official distributor of Fiart Mare in Montenegro.

All boats and yacht charters have seasoned captains and crew that are knowledgeable in operating the vessel and lifesaving techniques.

What route is taken throughout the cruise?

We cruise the following itinerary from Dubai Marina: Marina Lagoon, JBR, Blue Waters, Dubai Eye, Kempinski Palace, and Atlantis can be reached in 2 hours. The Marina Lagoon, JBR, Blue Waters, Dubai Eye, Kempinski Palace, Atlantis, and Burj Al Arab can all be reached in 3 hours. The course is determined by the sea weather. For journeys lasting 6 hours or more, we follow the guest’s wish. You may either cruise in the Arabian Sea in the direction of the World Islands and Moon Islands, or you can continue all the way to Dubai Creek and the historic Dubai Canal.

Absolutely, children of all ages may enjoy a luxury yacht in Dubai Marina. For safety reasons, it is advised that infants younger than 2 years old stay in the cabin area under an adult’s supervision. For their safety, children under the age of nine must be restrained in life jackets at all times while cruising.

Can pets be brought on yachts?

Animals are often not permitted aboard yachts or boats. We are aware that they are a member of the family as well, though. Therefore, we can only accept special authorisation for dogs onboard if it is unavoidable. There will be additional fees and a deposit to cover potential damage. Depending on the pet’s specifics, you may only bring them with permission.

Is music playable on the Yacht?

Yes, you may listen to the music of your choosing whenever you want while travelling thanks to the high-quality sound system that comes standard on all of our yacht rentals. Alternatively, if needed, we may set up a live DJ.
