Man dies after boat hits piling on river near Langley, B.C.: RCMP

65-year-old boater died of his injuries, police say.

Langley RCMP say a 65-year-old man is dead after his boat collided with a metal piling in the Fraser River.

A boater in distress was reported in the Derby Reach area around 5 p.m. PT on Saturday, police said in a news release Sunday evening.

Mounties, paramedics and firefighters responded, RCMP said, but the man died of his injuries.

"Initial investigation indicates that the boat was involved in a collision with a metal river piling and it is believed that the boat operator was [the] lone occupant at the time of the incident," Cpl. Zynal Sharoom said in the release.

Langley RCMP say they have asked the West Coast Marine Services to assist with the investigation into the incident.

Witnesses and anyone who has information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and quote file 2024-8150.
