The Dawn 390 concept is for a performance singlehanded dinghy for teenagers & older transitioning up from junior classes, and a fun, clean layout and rewarding boat for experienced sailors. With a focus to encourage female sailors.
By using composites for a light, stiff hull and deck structure with a carbon fibre mast, it is easier to launch and rig.
Cockpit floor drains water out the stern, with angled sides for comfortable hiking out whilst staying clear of the water.
There are three sail plan options:-
The 7.5m^2 standard sail for the experienced crew.
The 5.5m^2 mainsail for the lighter crew moving up from a junior class, or those wanting a low power rig for fun sailing or windy conditions.
The 9. 5m^2 for bigger sailors and extreme fun.
When down, the centreboard rotates fore and aft which moves the centre of pressure for balance in different wind conditions.
It is a boat that is responsive and promotes good sailing skills. It is suitable for establishments to teach the skills of boat balance and trim.
The prototypes have been built from moulds to be the same weight as the final production boats, while refining sail & rig options.
Clean and balanced hull form with simple deck layout
Light weight composite hull
Carbon mast- the tip de-powers to equalize crew ability to carry sail in a breeze
Rewards crew agility for a balanced trim and helming
Several prototypes have been built and sailed, with 2 available for use and evaluation.
Easy to sail & fun. Cockpit is big enough for several kids.
Concept for a dinghy suited to teenagers, women and lighter males
Design by David Alan-Williams
The 5.5 m^2 sail uses the same mast, boom and controls as the standard sail plan, making it an easy transition up to the bigger sail size.
It can continue to be a heavy airs training sail for experienced sailors or an easy to use option for family fun sailing.
No need for different spars for different sails.
Prototypes have been built and sailed, with 2 available for evaluation testing by individuals, clubs and youth squads. This is part of the ongoing development for the mast and sail program optimization. Feed-back for rig and deck layout can be incorporated into boats building in the current molds before investing in high volume production tooling. Volume production will enable a keen price. At this stage, commercial support is being sought to invest in the the development of the Dawn 390 to take on the project for volume production and achieve worldwide success with strong marketing. You are invited to please be in contact to discuss this business opportunity.

The 5.5 sail plan is the first step for those moving up from small trainer classes and in the 50 kg weight range.
Perfect for the development of new skills of steering by body movement. Move up to a Dawn 390 dinghy with a controllable and responsive sail plan.
No need to change boats later- just move to a bigger sail.
EFFORTLESS PLANING
Mast plans have been drawn up for a 9.5 m2 sail for crew in the 75-105 kg range. The mast is in two parts, so only a longer lower mast is needed for the bigger rig. The mast and boom parts can fit inside a standard estate car. The boat is light enough to lift onto a car roof rack.
With the sail plan profile development now finalised, there has been on going refinement of the carbon mast laminate and production technique for improved durability and performance to match the sail. Refinement of fittings for easy mast stepping has given good benefits.
The 7.5m^2 mainsail for the 65kg range crew has a square top setting on a rotating carbon mast and carbon boom. There is a slot in the foredeck for front loading when stepping the light mast. This makes it easier than a straight lift in. Central mainsheet, powerful vang and adjustment lines give full control for the mainsail. A luff sleeved option with full length top batten has been selected after initial testing with a luff track. There has been extensive 2 & 3 boat testing of the rigs and sail plans to achieve a fine balance.
