Motor Yacht

Launched in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, Dubai is the world’s second largest private yacht, measuring 162 metres. Dubai’s incredible size is disguised by the elegant lines of her steel hull and aluminium superstructure – the work of renowned designer Andrew Winch. Her stunning interior was designed by Platinum Yachts.

The construction of this megayacht began for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei more than 10 years before the yacht’s launch. The construction, then a joint project between Blohm + Voss and Lurssen shipyards, was halted until 2001 when the hull was acquired by Platinum Yachts for His Highness Sheik Mohammed Rashid al-Maktoum. The project, previously named Platinum, Panhandle and Golden Star, was re-named Dubai.

Dubai’s luxurious interior design blends bold colours with fine fabrics and intricately detailed handmade mosaics. A spectacular staircase creates Dubai’s showpiece. Bathed in natural light from the top deck, this dramatic circular staircase features glass steps, which change colour. Dubai’s spacious decks offer a split-level owner’s deck; a large social area including the main lounge with its centrepiece red sofa; numerous VIP and guest suites, and a crew area to accommodate 115 people including crew and guest staff.

With seven decks, Dubai has a wealth of sunbathing areas; a striking mosaic swimming pool and several Jacuzzis. She can accommodate a helicopter of up to 9.5 tonnes and can carry two 10-metre long tenders.

Dubai has a displacement of 9,150 tonnes, yet can reach an impressive 26 knots at maximum speed. She has exceptional worldwide capability with a range of 8,500 miles at 25 knots, powered by four MTU diesel engines.

UAE yacht builder on creating 'floating villas' for the rich in Ras Al Khaimah

Polish company sunreef has made high-end vessels for sporting stars including tennis ace nadal and f1 star alonso, yacht builders establish in ras al khaimah to cater for a new luxury market.

A luxury yacht builder from Poland has begun manufacturing multimillion-dollar boats in Ras Al Khaimah , with the first vessels to ship out by the end of the year.

Sunreef Yachts has built high-end catamarans for more than two decades in its Gdansk factories, with buyers including tennis player Rafael Nadal and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso .

Keen to expand beyond Europe, the company’s French founder Francis Lapp chose the UAE as the base for his first overseas shipyard two years ago.

The shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah has started production of twin-hull yachts and was formally inaugurated on Monday by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

More than 180 staff are employed at the site. The company aims to provide jobs to more than 600 by the end of the year.

“My vision was to make something here – to show that Ras Al Khaimah is the right place for a shipyard, to be closer to Asia and Australia,” Mr Lapp told The National .

“For the future of boating, this is the best place. I did not want to have it all in Europe. To make [vessels] in Turkey or somewhere else was also a possibility. I chose this, this is the right place.”

Crafting luxury

Mr Lapp moved from Poland, his home of 30 years, to Dubai four years ago. He now travels almost every day to the Ras Al Khaimah port to supervise the production of the spacious yachts.

“When I started in Poland in 2002, Poland was not popular for super luxury yachts, only for big ships,” he said.

“We brought luxury to Poland and now we are doing the same in Ras Al Khaimah.”

The Dh100 million ($27.2 million) shipyard will cater to a growing demand for spacious yachts. Construction is already under way on a second shipyard at the site to cope with orders worth $170 million to be delivered over the next two years.

The majority of orders come from Europe, while the company also has clients from Australia, Asia and the US.

The Ras Al Khaimah shipyard will first produce midrange 44 foot to 88 foot catamarans with solar-panelled roofs, with the vessels priced between $1.5 million and $12 million.

The luxury transatlantic 140-foot yachts built in the company’s Polish shipyard cost up to $50 million.

Luxury is seclusion

Often described as floating villas, the boats are tailor-made for each client, with features including walnut wood interiors, granite kitchen and dining areas, master suites with walk-in dressing rooms and private balconies. Storage space can also be added for jet skis and kayaks.

“Luxury is not only to show the boat in front of Bulgari hotel in Dubai,” said Mr Lapp, 66. “Luxury, too, is an island, a place where you are alone.”

He said the boats allowed celebrities and sports stars such as Alonso to steer clear of the public eye.

“He has enough of show in Formula One,” Mr Lapp said. “He wants to go someplace and not be photographed, no press, nothing, to have a nice holiday.

“That’s why people are choosing our products, our catamarans, to go to someplace where you cannot go with normal boats.”

Longer trips, further afield

The time clients spent sailing has increased over the past few years, with people extending their voyages from a matter of weeks to months.

“Now clients stay two or three months on the boat in the summer, bring their family, make a long trip,” said Mr Lapp, who has sailed with his family from Monaco to Dubai.

Polish government officials believe more companies will follow Sunreef’s example and expand operations in the UAE.

The Polish Business Council in Dubai was recently inaugurated, with more companies expected to open in the Emirates.

“I feel proud. It is a symbol of our deepening economic co-operation,” said Ignacy Niemczycki, a senior official in Poland’s Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.

“It’s the first large Polish investment in the UAE and my hope is this paves the way for others.”

UAE is home

Mr Lapp plans to move his family from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah next year, once his teenage daughter heads off to study at university.

“I love Dubai and the UAE. I feel my home is here,” he said.

He wants the shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah to be used to deliver the same vessels as the Gdansk site. “Now our clients are asking us about quality and I say, ‘Yes, for sure, the quality will be the same in Ras Al Khaimah,” he said.

“We will bring this same level of quality of Poland that we did in the last 20 years to Ras Al Khaimah. I do not want to be number two. Every morning my challenge is how – in innovation, quality - how to be number one.”

Chairman Alshaali is opening up international markets – and wants to get into boat finance

Dubai: One of the biggest names in the Middle East’s leisure yachting industry, UAE’s Gulf Craft is heading back to primed-for-growth South Asian markets, signing up new dealerships there.

“We had been a bit absent from Asia after COVID, and we wanted to set that right,” said Mohammad Alshaali, Chairman of the company, which has a massive boat yard in Umm Al Quwain and also in the Maldives.

“That’s because right after COVID, our presence in Southeast Asia kind of stopped. We have signed a dealer in Indonesia and Malaysia, and renewed existing activities in Thailand. There’s Hong Kong too – these are all markets where we can be selling our boats.”

Asia has no shortage of people with ample wealth, and the sort who will not be dwelling too much on spending millions of dollars on luxury yachts and all the trappings of a lifestyle to suit that. Real estate developers too have been busy creating marinas to support any uptick in demand for such ocean plying vessels.

Monaco, Miami and more

For Gulf Craft, the last two years have been about finding its overseas moorings. First, there was the chase for visibility in the European marina and yachting circuit, including showing off its boats in Monaco. Then came carefully planned exposure in Miami and that helped with the North American presence. All this while building and selling pricey yachts to a well-heeled global clientele.

“We had another good year in 2023, and international markets did help with that,” said Alshaali. “Our boat yards in the UAE and Maldives have been busy throughout.”

This is why getting its presence back on board in Far East markets is vital. The sheer breadth of a geographic presence has its benefits, and that’s what Gulf Craft is clearly angling for.

Creating a ‘group’

This week, the company confirmed creating a holding company structure, whereby it will be now known as ‘Gulf Craft Group’.

Again, for a next level of growth, such a move was deemed essential. “We have multiple brands, multiple markets we are in, and it was felt time was right to group all activities under a unified structure,” said the Chairman.

“We can better manage our network of international dealerships this way. And it does help with what we are planning to get into.”

More than making and selling boats

Creating the group is also about getting into roles that the company has not been into. “New things are part of the plan – we want to be in a position to offer long-term loans for customers,” said Alshaali. “This was something we could not do in the previous structure, where all that we focused on was building the best boats that we could put to water.

“But new ways are a must for the company, there is no getting away from that. Apart from customer financing, we will also try and get a shot at supporting chartering activities. Now, that’s an area we find there are great possibilities to be had. In the future.”

Clearly, Alshaali and Gulf Craft Group have set sights on how to chart a new growth journey…

Dubai International Boat Show attracts leading yacht builders

Azimut, Ferretti Group, Sanlorenzo, Gulf Craft, Princess, Sunseeker and Sunreef return, while Abeking & Rasmussen, Tecnomar, Sirena and Greenline are among new exhibitors.

Dubai Harbour is hosting the show for a second year

The 29 th Dubai International Boat Show from March 1-5 is set to feature over 175 yachts, boats and watercraft – including 50 global and regional launches – and more than 1,000 brands, according to event organiser Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

Italian builders Azimut, Ferretti Group and Sanlorenzo, UAE’s Gulf Craft, British builders Princess and Sunseeker, and Poland’s Sunreef are among leading yacht builders confirmed for the event. Over 30,000 visitors are expected over the five days, as the Middle East’s biggest boat show is held for the second time at Dubai Harbour .

Gulf Craft is staging the world premiere of its Majesty 111 in a large line-up including the Majesty 120, Majesty 100, Majesty 72, Majesty 62, Nomad 70, Oryx 379 and Silvercraft 32 WA.

Azimut’s four yachts include the 94ft S10 sportfly

Azimut is set to display its Fly 53, Fly 68, S10 (94ft) and Grande 27M (88ft), while the Ferretti Group line-up could include the Middle East premieres of the Riva 88’ Folgore, Ferretti Yachts 780 and Pershing 5X (54ft), along with a Pershing 8X (84ft) and Ferretti Yachts 670. Sanlorenzo will show its SX88 and possibly the new SP110 that debuted at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

Princess Yachts Gulf will exhibit the British builder’s flagship Princess X95 in a six-yacht display including the V60 F55 F50 F45 and new V50 (deck) that debuted last year. Sunseeker vessels on show include a 74 Sport Yacht XPS, with the British builder represented by Sunseeker Gulf led by John Bush and Brett Noble.

As announced previously, Sunreef Yachts will exhibit the first Sunreef 80 Eco and a 60 Sunreef Power (click for article). Among other solar-electric catamaran builders, Silent-Yachts will have a booth, while Alva Yachts is represented by local dealer MBC Yachts. A Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 will be on show through dealer JJ Marine.

Damen Yachting will have a booth on the Superyacht Avenue where the Dutch superyacht builder will showcase detailed scale models and promote its series of yachts including the Espen Øino-designed Amels 60 and Amels 80 Limited Editions, SeaXplorer 60 and Yacht Support 53.

Jorrit Pilaar, Damen Yachting’s Sales Manager, said: “We are thrilled to be returning to the Dubai International Boat Show again. The event gives us a chance to catch up with many friends and to make new acquaintances from throughout the world of yachting. Organisers confirmed over 10 new exhibitors including Abeking & Rasmussen (Germany), Tecnomar (Italy), Nordhavn (USA), Sirena Yachts (Turkey), Greenline Yachts (Slovenia), SAY Carbon Yachts (Germany), Finnmaster (Finland) and Boutique Yachts, a yachting services provider.

DWTC states that over 12 per cent of the world’s superyachts lie in the MENA region and that Dubai is one of the world’s top-10 nautical hubs within the marine industry, home to world-class waterfront property developments and many first-class marinas.

Dubai has a rich maritime heritage and over the years has created an extensive ecosystem and a sophisticated hub to nurture some of the greatest boat designers and manufacturers in the world. Sunreef’s two catamarans include the first 80 Eco

The show is preceded by the Middle East Yachting Conference (MEYC) on February 28. Speakers include Francis Lapp (Sunreef Yachts), Farouk Nefzi (Feadship), Paris Baloumis (Oceanco) and Thomas Weigend, Managing Director of Meyer Werft, which is building the 289m (948ft) Njord , described as “the world’s largest private residence yacht” with 117 private apartments.

Meanwhile, the second Experiential Yachting Forum will be held on March 2-3 (click here) . The show will also host the launch of the DIBS S.E.A. (Sustainable Environmental Action) Mission to support Dubai’s marine life.

DUBAI Yacht – World’s Third Biggest $500M Superyacht

The DUBAI yacht is one of the biggest yachts in the world .

The 162-meter vessel was built by Blohm + Voss in Germany and delivered to her owner the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, in 2006.

Since DUBAI took nearly ten years to complete her interior was replanned several times.

Andrew Winch is thought to have influenced the design and the renowned studio Platinum Yachts also worked on DUBAI.

The interior of this gigantic vessel is just as you might expect it.

Luxurious furniture, opulent design, and extravagant features complement the beautiful exterior of DUBAI.

The interior is decorated in bright colors with a great variety of entertainment spaces and salons.

The glass staircase is a central focal point within the yacht and is reminiscent of a cruise ship.

DUBAI can welcome 48 guests in 24 luxurious cabins as well as a sizable crew of 88 members.

There is a nightclub, a spa, a beauty salon, a cinema, and a gym on board DUBAI.

Many rooms are decorated with mosaics or tapestries and only the finest and most expensive fabrics.

Specifications

DUBAI has a length of 162 meters (531.6 ft) making her the fourth largest yacht in the world.

She has a 22-meter (72.2 ft) beam, a 5-meter (16.5 ft) draft, and a total weight of 12,488 tons.

Her four diesel MTU engines allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots with an average cruising speed of 20 knots.

Her 1,250,000 liter fuel tanks bring her total reach to an impressive 8,500 nautical miles. 

The exterior of the DUBAI yacht was developed by the well-known English yacht designer Andrew Winch.

His international design studio took special care with this project, and it is one of their largest to date.

The DUBAI yacht is an all-white yacht with a massive aluminum superstructure and steel hull.

She has a helipad and a beautiful mosaic swimming pool located aft.

Of course, there is plenty of space reserved for sunbathing on one of the vessel’s seven decks.

Two 10-meter tenders find space on board DUBAI as well as a large selection of water toys.

The sheikh purchased DUBAI for a price of US $500 million in 2006, which makes her one of the more expensive superyachts in her size category.

She generates an estimated US $35 to 50 million in annual running costs.
