Endurance 35

  • August 5, 2009

The ketch-rigged Endurance 35 has the typical hallmarks of the range: fl ush deck with doghouse, boomed staysail and, on some boats, a stub bowsprit. The hull is long-keeled and full-bodied, allowing plenty of internal volume. She has a wood or glassfi bre doghouse, which provides full headroom in the after part of the saloon but the deckhead is low further forward. The standard arrangement offered six to seven berths in three cabins with a good galley and a large navigation area. She is not particularly close-winded and needs a good breeze to get going, but handles well and can plough on through weather that would send fl imsier craft scurrying for the nearest bolt-hole.

Belliure Endurance 35

Belliure Endurance 35 is a 35 ′ 3 ″ / 10.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Peter A. Ibold and built by Belliure Yachts starting in 1975.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Endurance 35 information.

I've been looking at an Endurance 35 on sailboatlistings.com for the past couple weeks. The seller lists the boat as being built in 1980 but doesn't mention the builder's name (making me think it was a private builder). The seller states the hull is made up of Mahogany with fiberglass skin. That would be surprising since it seems the vast majority of these boats, especially privately built ones, are made from ferro-cement. Does anyone have any experience with either a ferro-cement hulled boat or mahogany hulled boats? Anyone ever sail on an Endurance 35 that can tell me more about how she behaves? Things that i should advise a surveyor to check ( i can't myself, the boat is in maryland and i'm on the gulf coast). Anything else i might have missed? I love the look of the boat and this particular one is cutter rigged rather than ketch. I'm looking for a very solid bluewater cruiser where speed is not nearly as important as safety and comfort. The endurance seems like a very solid boat from what i have read but there isn't too much information on them floating around. ENDURANCE 35 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

Faster

Endurances were built in Fiberglass by the DeKleer brothers (of Fraser fame) near Vancouver. Many were sold as kits (hull/deck and/or hull only) Not a particularly inspired design and if this is a homebuilt you really need to be 'eyes wide open' all the time. Glass-over-wood can work quite well (there are thousands of homebuilt Thunderbirds out there) but there's always a possibilities of delamination and separation.

Text from sailboatdata.com "A highly thought of long-distance cruiser that has been built of wood, steel, ferro and GRP by amateur and professional builders around the world. Designed as a Cutter or Ketch."

The way I read that ad 1980 Endurance 35 sailboat for sale in Maryland Is that it is wood covered with fiberglass cloth. I would make sure the survey includes moisture readings taken from wood under fiberglass. Delamination is one thing, but water ingress into the wood core would be a deal breaker for me. There is a glut of good boats out there and no sense taking undue risks with wood core boats.

I looked at an Endurance once that was glass over wood - home finished I believe - did not have a lot of confidence in it given the fit and finish - also been aboard a ferrocement one - it was beautiful , extremely well done - so I guess it just depends, I would want to know the original builder before I invested in one.

That's the issue with any 'homebuilt'... You want one built by a very (multi) talented guy with full blown OCD.. not someone with the 'that'll do' mindset.

I'm believe I'm looking to buy the same boat, in Maryland. And I too query this hull design. Why did you not buy it, please?

Plans to take a trip to Maryland to personally inspect the boat fell through. Given the price reduction of the boat and the result of the presidential election, i have moved up my time table and am planning to make a trip to Maryland again.

If I had to choose between ferrocement and glass sheathed wood on a 36 year old home build I know what my choice would be. Ferro every time. While repairing a double diagonal glass sheathed boat is possible finding someone willing to tackle it will be very difficult. This is technology from a bygone age.

There are lots of the glass ones around here. I knew a guy who built one of the first De Kleer glass hulls - they didn't even have the deck mould at the time so he built a ply over beams deck. I've always liked the look of the boats but they are light on headroom with the flush deck. I ran into Tom years later and he wished he had put a taller rig in it. Translation: slow boat. I saw a PHRF rating for them (seriously) that was about the same as a San Juan 24.

I believe this is the boat my father built & launched in 1980. He had built several glass & wood boats previously including restoring a turn of the century wooden Colin Archer. Sailed by builder for over 20 years. 20,000 miles at sea. First American ship down the Danube. White oak sole, African mahogany interior, laminated yellow oak beams. Regular marine surveys for Lloyds of London always elicited enthusiastic endorsement of workmanship. No idea how she has been maintained in the last decade after her sale. I hope she finds a good home with someone who loves sandpaper.

Review of Endurance 35

Basic specs..

The Endurance 35 is equipped with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Endurance 35 is typically equipped with an engine.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 269 liters (71 US gallons, 59 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Endurance 35 is 1.66, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Endurance 35 is about 182 kg/cm, alternatively 1020 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 182 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1020 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.
