Just as its names suggests, you can find the mast stand on top of the deck with Deck Stepped and on the hull’s bottom with Keel stepped. This means that to reach the keel, the mast would need to pierce through the cabin.

Deck Stepped rigs have masts that are more flexible because of their contact points, and are easily adjustable for optimal performance. Keel Stepped rig is rigid and strong and offers slow and steady cruising.

Talk about time-tested, the 19-foot Flying Scot has been in production since 1957 and remains a popular design today. Sloop rigged, with a conventional spinnaker for downwind work, the boat is an easily sailed family boat as well as a competitive racer, with over 130 racing fleets across the U.S. Its roomy cockpit can seat six to eight, though the boat is often sailed by a pair or solo. Hull and deck are a fiberglass and balsa core sandwich. With the centerboard up, the boat draws only eight inches. But, a common concern is, which one is the right boat to sail single-handed? We’ll find out together in this article. Fortunately, there are many suitable seaworthy vessels for one person. In this article, I list you the best boats to single-hand as well as find out what makes them appropriate for single-handing. These boats range from small lake dinghies all the way to comfortable cruisers capable of oceanic crossings. So, keep reading!

A Few Things About Single-Handed Sailing

There are many boats that perform particularly well for shorthanded sailing. However, the fact is that the structures on a boat have a greater effect on its suitability rather than the boat’s construction. Main features regarding single-handed sailing include easy sail controls, including the ability for one person to quickly tuck a reef in. And, let’s not forget the ability to easily change the sheets and the mainsheet traveller. Consider taking notes while onboard, and start finding new ways of facilitating your voyage.

Some simple changes include shifting a halyard clutch. But, there are more challenging ones like switching to a single-line reefing system. Wherever feasible, a single-line reef system is preferable. But, adding a reef tack line and getting back to the cockpit can be even more convenient and require less line that will probably tangle in the cockpit. The Hanse 371 was built from 1999 until the mid-2000s. The boat offered a selection of either deep or shallow low center of gravity fin keels. These were joined with the hull and a long waterline. Below the deck, you can choose between 2 or 3 cabin layouts with a comfortable galley. Hanse 371 benefits from self-tacking jibs so when tacking all you have to do is spin the wheel. And, in case you’re sailing on autopilot you just press a few buttons and you’re good to go.

In addition, you can increase sail area when reaching in light air with a Code 0 or asymmetric spinnaker. This model maximizes the amount of space and with a reasonable budget. So, with its great interior and performance, the Hanse 371 is a seaworthy vessel that may cost you around $60,000. Most importantly keep in mind that everything is standard and easy to use. Like this, you simplify your life while sailing single-handed.

Jeanneau Sun Fast 3200

The Jeanneau Sunfast 3200 was manufactured with offshore short-handed sailing taken into account since the beginning. This boat is not only a classical sailing boat but also a small and light one that is easy to navigate. Even better, it has the durability and strength to withstand long passages. Beneteau Oceanis 62

Let’s now pass to the bigger fellas! As aforementioned, single-handed sailing doesn’t mean you have to choose small sailboats. This is because nowadays single-handed 60+ ft boats aren’t that rare in terms of production, as they were in the past.

Basically, the Beneteau Oceanis 62 meets the modern demands of today’s market and was specifically designed to provide ease of use. In other words, it can be easily handled and operated by a single person. I know that all this space might be a bit exaggerated, but if you’re the kind of person that enjoys being in oceanic solitude while benefiting from having a moving apartment, then this one is for you! Of course, there are more boats of the same size suited for short-handed sailing, like the Hanses, Bavarias, and Jeanneaus. But, you can find a new Oceanis 62 for around $724,500, which is a great price for boats of that size combining both performance and quality.

Hunter Channel 31

From the mid-1980s onwards, this British boatbuilder transitioned from racing to powerful but easy-to-handle small cruisers. As a result, a series of boats has been developed that can sail almost effortlessly without losing handling characteristics.

The deck layout features an effective layout, with an optional self-tacking jib and single-line mainsail. As a short-handed sailor, you’ll benefit from the tiller steering, which allows you to steer with your legs while trimming sails. The accommodation below decks is well-designed and provides considerably more room than the previous Horizon 30 model.

This model, which debuted in 2001, was of higher quality than the majority of Hunter’s other cruising models and greatly focuses on performance. It was also one of the company’s last all-new designs, so it benefited from the most up-to-date design at the time. This was especially apparent in the well-balanced hull shape, which also provided excellent form stability. Joined with high ballast ratios and low center of gravity keels resulted in a boat that doesn’t need continuous trimming to maintain high average speeds or avoid repeated broaching in gusts.

This is the prototypical short-handed performance boat in several respects. Long-distance single-handed and double-handed sailors love it as well as inshore racing teams. The boat’s offshore reputation has been well established, with many North Atlantic crossings under its belt. Although J/109 is often considered as a planing boat, this 19-year old model is too heavy to be one of that kind. It is basically a moderate all-rounder that offers great performance with the ability for extended surfing when offshore. The boat is also available in a shoal draught form, but it didn’t sell that much.

A great advantage is that the big asymmetric spinnakers can be easily gybed from the cockpit in light airs. And, a poled-out jib can still provide fast downwind speeds with an enviable degree of control in a true wind of more than 20 knots. Almost everyone sailing J/109s short-handed, at least in Europe, hasn’t used the boat’s original overlapping genoas so as to employ blade jibs that are set on roller furling gear.

The only downside is that the boat is expensive for one of this size on the second-hand market. However, its quality of construction and the high standard equipment aren’t going to let you down. Moreover, the interior layout is sparse and has less interior space, although it provides a well-designed and effective two-cabin compartment.

Catalina 315

This is a stylish pocket cruiser that raises the bar for solo sailors by providing exceptional comfort and efficiency. With a hull length of 31′, the Catalina 315 has more interior space than most classics and is still ideal for solo sailing. Rigging the Catalina 315 is a lot simpler with a masthead sloop because it has both an in-mast roller furling mainsail and a roller furling genoa.

Despite the fact that it is a much larger boat, it has a few key features that make all the difference. The split backstays, for example, are excellent for balance and functionality. This is one of the key reasons it was named the 2013 Boat of the Year Best Inshore Cruiser by Cruising World. The boat might surpass your needs when sailing solo, as it is a high-end sailboat with a price tag of more than $175,000. However, if that seems too pricey, you can look for a used model, which will be slightly less expensive.

Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20

The Flicka is a 20-foot sailboat developed and planned for extended cruising and bluewater sailing. The Newport workboats of the 19th century were distinguished by their sweeping sheer, proud bowsprit, blunt bow, broad beam, and low side decks. Flickas by Nor’Star and Pacific Seacraft have withstood the test of time. This is because most Flickas were made with polyester resin or vinlyester resins later on in the production. 

For some sailors, this is a disadvantage as you don’t realize just how small the Flicka is until you step into the cockpit. However, it’s a seaworthy vessel and offers a remarkably spacious interior. In addition, the robust tiller is mounted on the transom, thus giving good leverage for steering and freeing up cockpit space. As for the interior, there really is enough standing headroom as well as the open-plan without a full forward bulkhead opens things up. The galley offers all basic equipment and the V-berth is large and comfortable. 

On top of that, the Flicka is towable, seaworthy, and you can actually liveaboard. Even though it is a small craft you can still cross the oceans with it. On this one, there’s no denying that everything is within easy reach. At this scale, ergonomics are almost irrelevant. Because of its towability, the fact that it can be parked in your garden, and its short-handed capability, it’s the ideal spontaneous getaway vessel.

Amel 60 definitely got your back while sailing solo in the oceans. The Amel 60 features great advantages and, with its rectangular hull portlights and wraparound windscreen, it takes you on the modern cruising generation.

Fixed bowsprits and plumb bows ensure a modern design and experience. In addition, lines open out into beamy sections aft and benefit from twin rudders. And, since these forms, when paired with the proper buoyancy distribution, can provide a faster hull form, it’s a no-brainer for cruising designs to follow the secondary benefits that come with this fuller form. The watertight bulkheads ensure that the boat won’t sink. Moreover, the cockpit has a sturdy roof and windows, so you’ll be safe no matter the weather. And, the stable hull ensures great handling even in challenging weather conditions.

One of the main benefits is the increased volume, which applies to both the accommodation and the deck lockers. When heeled, twin rudders minimize drag and provide a more balanced feel while underway. However, if they get damaged they provide a redundancy level. The shallower rudders also help in mooring stern-to for those who spend more time in areas like the Mediterranean. In the interior, you get enough space and luxury as well. There’s even a washing machine! So, even if you are an experienced single-handed sailor that wants to benefit from space and performance, then with the $1.5 million price you will get this luxurious boat!

Amel 60

Beneteau 31

As a small cruiser keelboat, this French-designed vessel is predominantly constructed of fiberglass and is ideal for single-handed sailing without minimizing interior space and comfort. Its galley has ample storage and counter space, as well as a sit-down navigation station with a small table. The interior benefits from the straight-lined and elegant thinking of Nauta Design. The comfy seats on either side of a drop-leaf table double the living space. There’s also a spacious athwartship aft-cabin berth and V-berth.

Under power, maneuvering this boat is a breeze, and it’s well worth it for any solo sailor looking for a coastal cruiser. It has a fractional sloop rig, which allows for in-mast furling. This makes it simple to control while also making it strong in light winds. There are a number of classic trainers used by yacht club youth programs as well as techie new designs. Without mentioning specific models and brands, it’s difficult to outline which small boats are best but here are things to look for in good teaching boats.

Boats with Tiller Steering

Steering by tiller (rather than a wheel) can make a difference when learning. Tillers are directly connected to the rudder that manages the boat’s direction. Tillers provide quick feedback about the strength and direction of the wind as well as the boat’s turning agility at various speeds.

Boats with No Winches

Boats that require no winches to manage the sheets and halyards are best for youngsters and new sailors. These boats usually don’t experience the same forces on the sails and rigging as larger boats, which can be a handful when the wind starts to blow. Winches are usually replaced with cam or jam cleats, which are easy to use.

Sailing Dinghies

Sailing dinghies are usually rigged with one mast and one sail and offer kids and new sailors simplicity so it’s easy to learn the ropes. Less overwhelming than boats with two sails, dinghies are light and responsive. They also have a shallow draft due to side or centerboards so they can be sailed just about anywhere. In some cases (whether from a wind gust or sudden crew weight shift) sailing dinghies can capsize so students should wear lifejackets and know how to swim. Small Sloops

Small sloops with a mast that carries head and mainsails are the next step so students learn how sails work together. Headsails can be hanked on or attached to a small roller furler. These boats may have some or no winches, which also makes them easier to maintain. These boats can usually be sailed with one to four people.

Some sloops can scale up, providing a more challenging experience for sailors as they develop skills. Certain models can carry spinnakers and larger headsails to teach sail combinations and new sail trim techniques. Others offer the ability to hike out (shift crew weight well outboard to balance the boat against the wind pressure in the sails). This kind of sailing is more advanced.

Small Catamarans

Small catamarans provide extra stability for those who may be nervous about capsizing or aren’t fond of heeling (tipping while sailing). With two hulls providing a wide and stable base, catamarans area ideal for beginners, which may be why they’re often used by resorts as their beach sailing tourist boats. Rigged with one or two sails, small cats are tiller steered and usually have a trampoline that the students sit on and sail.

Rotomolded Boats

Small rotomolded boats are very forgiving due to their durable construction. Unlike fiberglass or wooden boats, rotomolded (a type of plastic construction technique) trainers can bounce off docks or other boats and cause or sustain little damage. Dinghies and catamarans can both be made via rotomolding.

Trailerable Sailboats

Finally, small sailboats that can be trailered to different locations add variety and that makes learning fun. Students can learn to sail in different wind and water conditions and enjoy their boats differently on vacation or with new friends.

Learning to sail involves all the senses and requires a level head and lots of practice and although it can be learned in many ways, the best way is to start with a boat that’s small, simple, safe and durable.

What Sailboats Can Be Sailed By One Person? (Complete List)

We all love sailing together with friends and family, but sometimes we can’t get them to come out with us. When that happens we must sail solo. Sailing solo can be hard sometimes but if it’s just a day sail in nice weather you shouldn’t have a problem.

There are a lot of options when it comes to picking a boat for one person. More than likely, you can sail the boat you have by yourself, but if you are considering buying one and want to be able to sail it yourself, then this article will help you find one.

1. Catalina 22

I believe this is one of the best boats for first-time sailors sailing solo. Yes, this is what I started on and a lot of people do. I have had dozens of people come up to me when I was with my boat and they would tell me all about their first boat which was a Catalina 22.

They are great starter boats and very easy to handle. They may not be big enough for crossing the Atlantic, but any bay or lake sailing and they will do just fine.

The Catalina 22 comes with a swing keel, which allows you to enter those shallower waters. This makes it very convenient for lake sailing and running it up onshore. It has a draft of 5ft with the keel down and a displacement of 2,250 lbs. Another unique feature of this boat is the pop-top. Being able to pop the cabin top up a few feet increases the headroom down below. It’s a great little feature that just adds to the fun of this boat.

If you’re looking for your first boat and want to sail solo, then this is the best option in my opinion.

2. 30′ Hunter Cherubini

The 30-foot hunter is a very common sight around the docks. It is a very solid boat and easy to handle. The hull is extremely solid when well kept and great for the open ocean. I have sailed on one of these in the Gulf of Mexico and it did very well.

The last year of production was 1983, but there are still plenty of them out there. That’s because they are very well built. It has a max draft of 5.25 ft and a displacement of 9,700 lbs. It’s a heavy boat which makes it good for open oceans.

I have seen these for sale under 10K making it a great option for purchase. Depending on if you have the money of course.

3. Catalina 250

This is one of my favorite Catalina models. I love how the cockpit has extra room and the cabin still has plenty of room. It is only 25 ft long making it a great size for solo sails. If you are looking for a good weekend boat, I definitely recommend this one.

Its LOA (length overall) is 25 ft even. The draft is 5 ft with a wing keel. (click here for information on keel types) Displacement for this vessel is only 4,200 lbs. This boat will require an outboard motor for getting in and out of the docks. If you need one click here.

4. Hobie 16

The Hobie 16 has to be mentioned in this list. It is a super common boat and it is seen all over the world. There are some people that race these professionally and others that use them recreationally. They are great for kids and adults alike. If you are ever at a resort you will usually see these on the beach for rent.

The Hobie 16 has a weight of only 320 lbs making it easy to flip over when needed. With the rudder in the up position, the draft is only 10 inches. It fits up to four people, but you might be able to fit a couple more.

This boat is all about fun! Don’t sail it across the Atlantic though.

5. Catalina 36 MK II

This boat is over the average of 30 feet but that doesn’t mean you can’t solo sail it. Like I said earlier it all depends on experience. The Catalina 36 MK II is another one of my favorites. I love the size and look of it.

If you want something just a bit bigger than the 30-footers, then I recommend this one.

The draft is 5.83 ft and the displacement is 13,500 lbs. It has two cabins giving you a guest room for overnight guests. This is definitely one of my favorite boats out there. It is just a perfect size, not too big and not too small.

Just remember it is 36 ft which can get more difficult. Once you practice with it enough, you should be able to sail solo when you want. If you plan to cross the Pacific in it, it is a good size for that, but having a couple of extra hands for the journey wouldn’t hurt.

6. Macgregor 25

The Macgregor 25 is an interesting boat. The first version was called the VENTURE 25. After a few changes to the design, it became the MACGREGOR 25. With more than 7000 boats sold, it’s one of the most popular models from this builder.

I looked at one of these for purchase once but did not go through with it. I ended up with a Catalina 22. That doesn’t mean this boat isn’t right for you though. It is a tiller steering setup if that is something you are considering. I started with a tiller and I think all people should.

The draft of this vessel is 5.67 ft. The displacement is 2,100 lbs. It is not the biggest boat out there but it is still a good choice if you are just starting out and want to do some solo sails.

7. Beneteau First 27

If you have the money, this is the one for you! This new model from Beneteau is most impressive. The speed of this boat will feel like you are in the middle of a race, or more like leading the race. It is designed for speed and comfort, with sleeping up to six adults. It is also designed where a single person can sail it as well.

This boat has a displacement of 3,747 lbs and the draft is 5 feet and 7 inches. The keel is a T-bulb design, making it very unique. We all know the Beneteau brand for being luxury on the water and this one delivers in a minimalist way. Check out the video below to get a real feel of this amazing sailboat.

8. Hunter 33 Cherubini

Another Hunter sailboat for the list. This is just a little bigger than the 30-foot Hunter mentioned earlier. It is very similar and still designed by Mr. John Cherubini. The draft is 5.25 ft and has a displacement of 10,600 lbs.

The design was originally marketed by the manufacturer as the Hunter 33 but is often confused with the 2004 Hunter 33-2004, which was also sold as the Hunter 33, and the 2012 Hunter E33, which is in production as the Marlow-Hunter 33.

Hunters are always a very solid choice.

9. Laser Sailboat

The Laser is a class of single-handed, one-design sailing dinghies using a common hull design with three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas, appropriate to a given combination of wind strength and crew weight. Bruce Kirby designed the Laser in 1970 with an emphasis on simplicity and performance.

These are great boats for racing around the lake. They are very popular for racing, but can also be used for recreational sailing. Sunfish are a type of dinghy sailor very similar to lasers but are usually built for recreational only use.

10. O’Day 25

O’Day is another one of my favorites. I love their classic look and feel. This is a very popular model from the O’Day company.

The boat was built by O’Day Corp. in the United States, with 2,898 completed between 1975 and 1984, when production ended. It was one of the company’s most successful designs

The O’Day 25 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a transom-hung rudder, and a fixed fin keel or centerboard. It displaces 4,007 lbs and has a draft of 4.25 ft.

What Size Sailboat Can One Person Handle? Depends on Experience

The average size boat that most people sail solo is a 30-footer. It is very common to see people sailing by themselves or with others on this size of boat. The size is easy enough to maneuver by yourself and the sails are easy to manage when you are all alone.

This does depend on experience though. If you have never sailed before then a 30-foot boat may be too much to handle. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when sailing and not knowing how to handle them will put you in harm’s way.

There is no specific timeline that will tell you when you are ready to captain a 45-foot sailboat. It comes down to confidence. Are you comfortable sailing a 45-foot vessel by yourself? If you answered yes, then you are probably good to go, unless you are just overconfident.

Sailing certifications will usually certify you to captain a boat up to a certain length. All though you are certified you may not have the confidence still. Being confident is a huge factor. When problems come up, confidence will allow you to stay calm and resolve the issue. Don’t think you can handle anything the sea throws at you just because you have a certification.

Factors To Consider When Sailing Solo – General Guidance

When you are considering a boat for solo sails there are a few thoughts to keep in mind.

First, how big of a boat do you want? The bigger the boat gets the harder it is to handle by yourself. Do you want this to be a sailing solo-only boat or do you want the option to have people with you when you sail? Consider safety on the boat. If you are going to be sailing by yourself you need to make sure you have the best safety gear.

What sails are needed? The self-tacking jib may be something you want to look into. A furling jib is a minimum in my opinion. Supplies are a general category to consider. Supplies will mean spare parts in case something breaks, food and water for the trip, and anything else you might need.

Gear For Sailing Solo – Multiple Items

When it comes to sailing solo, there is some gear you may need. Check out the list below for recommendations on gear for solo sailing.

  • Autopilot – When sailing out in the open ocean, the autopilot will be necessary if you ever want to sleep. It is very nice to turn it on while you take a nap or go fix something on the boat.
  • Windvane – Windvanes are also great for steering when you are busy. They use wind and cabling to steer the boat. They are a great thing to have in case the autopilot goes out. Plus, if the wind vane breaks for some reason, you might have a better chance of fixing it compared to an autopilot.
  • Safety Tether – These are essential for solo sailing in the open ocean. When the water gets rough, make sure you are attached to the boat so you don’t fall off. Never go on deck in rough conditions without a tether.
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) – This is also an essential item when sailing around the world. One thing to make sure of is easy access. If you are in trouble you don’t want to be digging under the v-berth looking for this. Put it somewhere close to the cockpit.
  • Supplies – This covers all items you may need from spare parts to canned foods. Remember to plan accordingly. Not planning is planning to fail.

The same goes for a house or an apartment. Regardless of if you get a 200 square foot condo or a 30,000 square feet mansion, it will most of the time provide a warm shelter with a shower and a kitchen and a bed, fulfilling its basic functions.

But this is only the case because there is extensive infrastructure in place helping cars and houses. A car can only get you from A to B thanks to roads. A house can only have a shower and a kitchen if it is connected to a grid.

But on a boat, you are on your own.

The sea doesn't adjust its waves for your comfort. If something breaks, there is usually not a repair shop nearby. You aren't always connected to water or electricity. And if you don't like what you see around yourself, it's not like you can just leave.

So a liveaboard boat needs to provide what a house does, what a vehicle does, and more, plus it needs to provide this regardless of if you are docked in a marina or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That is a lot to ask, especially if we are talking about boats around 30 or 50 feet.

Fortunately, every single boat on this list is an all-star that ticks all the right boxes. Let's see why.

I know, I hear you, it isn't exciting enough as it doesn't perform that well. Sure. But we are talking about a boat that is supposed to be a house too. So why is it on the list?

This boat has been in production since 1975, which means that it has been extraordinarily well-refined according to the suggestions of thousands of owners. And this manufacturer is known for listening to the sailors' feedback. It is a very popular model, so finding spare parts for it will always be easy. Its famous well thought through the salon, and cabin layout is generous and spacious, so Catalinas are comfortable boats to live on. Plus, the boat has quite a wide beam, great ballast/displacement ratio as well as low sail area/displacement ratio, making it a stiff boat under sail, which adds to stability and comfort.

Good condition MkIII Catalinas can be found for about $35,000, but given the volume of these on the market, you can find a usable one even for around $15,000.

This one is a hero. I'd be hesitant to call such a small boat a comfortable liveaboard if it wasn't for this model. For its size, the interior is very spacious. It is also made for comfort since it seems to be inspired by the aforementioned Catalina 30. In fact, after reading some reviews, I am confident in saying that you will not find a significantly more comfortable 27 footer out there.

It also has a talent very uncommon for liveaboard boats - you can put it on a trailer, which can make your life easier when it comes to certain trips. But most importantly, it is a beauty. Just look at it.

Pricing this boat is a tricky task. You can buy nearly new ones (2015) for around $140,000, but even for $50,000, you can stumble upon models from both the 80s and the 2000s. This means the condition is a big factor, and you gotta inspect your choice well. The good news is that whatever your price in that range, you will find a boat for that money. The bad news is that the cheaper you go, the more effort will the potential repairs take.

I thought the Nor'Sea 27 is gonna be it, but let's push the size limit even more with the 20 foot Flicka, this tiny, towable, but seaworthy beast that accomplished several circumnavigations. Upon entering, you will be amazed at how spacious and equipped with amenities the interior is. Its designer lived on this boat with his partner (who too was a naval architect) for years and cruised all around the world - and what a proof of confidence in his own design that is.

Truth be told, there is a lack of deck space, but underneath it has the comfort and size of a boat a few meters larger, a space you can comfortably live in. Due to its size, it is easy to operate, tow, and sails better than what you would expect from a boat this length.

This boat is incredibly charming, and so its owners rarely sell it. In fact, it has amassed quite a following since it was designed into existence. So expect to spend quite some time searching for one for sale. Once you do find one, it will cost you around $30,000 - $40,000.

This one's a weird one. But because of it, a very spacious one. It is structured as a catboat, that is, with the mast being all the way on the front of the boat, which makes for impressive space below the deck. It has all the necessary amenities, including a shower, so for the liveaboard lifestyle, this boat definitely deserves to make this list.

The single sail catboat design also means it is easy to handle single-handed, which makes for great solitary passages.

Expect to pay around $40,000 to $60,000 for this one.

Though I am trying to keep this list in lower price ranges, I have to put this one in. If you don't mind the price tag of around $170,000, this boat is marketed as the currently cheapest liveaboard catamaran. As previously mentioned, cats offer the most in terms of space, and this model is a brand new one. Thus when it comes to service troubles and costs, you wouldn't pay much. The look is modern, relatively minimalistic and sleek, so for those of you who would like to give the liveaboard lifestyle a go but get cold feet upon seeing boats from the 80s, this is a way to make sure things remain stylish.

The modernity, space, and attention to practicality when it comes to using this as your home, make this a great entry-level liveaboard choice.

Again, this is no performance vehicle. Rather it focuses on the usual cruiser aspects - space, stability, sturdiness, and convenience, which makes it an ideal candidate for your choice when looking for a new floating home. Aside from the spacious interior, this boat also has an unusually large cockpit, great for those lunches on the deck.

As if the designers knew this might be used by the liveaboard people, this boat is easy to handle, which means even under sail, you won't have issues focusing on what you came for in the first place - sea living.

This boat can be found on the market for around $75,000 - $100,000.

The great thing about the Hunter 33 is that it was designed as more of a house than a sailboat. The attention to accommodation details is great here; there is plenty of space for sleeping the owners as well as the occasional visitors, it has a fantastic headroom throughout the boat and one of the most spacious and comfortable dining spaces seen on boats this size.

Food preparation and consumption was probably high on the priority list of the makers; the kitchen has an L shape, which adds to the convenience.

The price spread on these is quite large, with the bottom around $55,000 for the 2004 models and the top around $95,000 for the 2013 models.

Since we are mostly looking at cheaper boats here, most of them aren't new - in fact, they likely have quite a few years behind them. The build quality is thus important. You want to go for builds that will last. Peterson is known for this, so it's gotta be on the list. As far as this list goes, it is quite a large boat. Moreover, it is one that has been built with spaciousness in mind, both when it comes to living spaces and storage.

A neat thing about this boat is its attention to performance. It isn't a racer; rather, it fits in the performance cruiser category, but they haven't made too many speed-related compromises here.

Peterson 44 can usually be found for $80,000 - $100,000.

There needs to be a catamaran on this list - they are, by definition, more spacious than monohulls, providing a large living area, which is, of course, an attractive characteristic for a liveaboard boat. Especially if they have a solid bridge deck, creating yet more square feet of usable space, which Snowgoose has. Unfortunately, they tend to be costly. While it is easy to recommend a bunch of half a million dollar cats, to make this list more within reach of the average sailor, I've found this beauty that you can get for around $100,000.

Aside from the extra space, this model is a true bluewater cruiser, meaning you won't be limited by its abilities when planning your journeys.

Those of you who had the pleasure of sailing this boat know why it needs to be here. It was built for a liveaboard lifestyle. Its wide body makes for one spacious interior which is well ventilated, (a very important aspect) with a beautiful galley and it has a large aft cabin with a huge bed. It was made with comfort, practicality, and convenience in mind.

Not to sound like a salesman, but believe me when I say this boat is a genuine pleasure to be on. If you want the homey feeling, you don't get much closer than this in this size range.

Expect to pay around $80,000 - $100,000 for this one, though some digging around and 'fixing her up' can knock this number down significantly.

This is another easy choice, space being the reason. Not only does it have an extra-large main cabin and salon with a kitchen, many small Parisian apartments could envy, but it is also very generous in terms of storage space. Stocking up for longer crossings will be a pleasure on this one.

Also, it was built as a racer-cruiser, so you won't be making many compromises in terms of performance, as is often the case with comfortable boats.

All of this comes for a price, though. You might be able to find one for around $100,000 if you put some time into your search and won't mind a bit of travel to see it, but otherwise, the average price is around $130,000.

Let's end this list by stretching the ceiling too with this fifty-footer. It was designed as a holiday cruiser, and it is a popular choice among charter companies. The designers know that there are places in Europe where it is very easy to get a sailing license, so many inexperienced people who don't want to give up the comforts of their home end up on these boats. Oceanis 50 is thus comfortable, spacious, easy to sail, and the attention to accommodation details, amenities, and practicality, is very high.

As such, it is designed to house whole families, so if you live there as a couple, you will have a floating house for yourself, and if kids come, no need to buy a new boat. Even on the deck, this boat is designed for pleasure cruises, so as far as that goes, you will be taken care of. As far as their seaworthiness goes, some consider Beneteau an entry-level holiday brand, and some models are indeed more designed for coastal hopping than large crossings. But that can be fixed with some proper fitting.

If you fancy a new one, you will find yourself paying above the $500,000 mark, but older models start a bit above $100,000. Which is something a person who just sold all their possessions to escape to the sea is more likely to have. Just be a bit careful with boats sold by charter companies. Their previous owners serviced them regularly, but you can be sure the hundreds of sailors that touched the helm weren't necessarily skilled or kind to them.

Like everything else in life, not all sailboats are created equal. Cruising sailboats have a lot to offer if you are looking for a reliable boat that allows you to take a long getaway and is easy to navigate.

Some of the fastest cruising sailboats include the Beneteau Oceanis 30.1, which can travel at 20 knots; the Grand Soleil 34, which touches 20 knots; and the Italia 9.98, which can reach up to 40 knots. Of course, there are many other high-speed cruising sailboats that you can choose from.

‍ Fastest Cruising Sailboats

The boat you buy should be influenced by your local waters or where you plan to travel. Because many portions of the coastline are exposed to the ocean, if our coastal cruising grounds were in New England, we’d want our boat to be able to manage offshore conditions Due to the logs and debris floating about in the Pacific Northwest, we’d want a sturdy rudderpost and a shielded prop; a tall rig would be a godsend in the light airs that are common during summer. It would be pointless to buy a boat without a centerboard if I lived near the Florida Keys.

Because her cruising gear makes up lesser of the overall displacement than a bluewater liveaboard yacht, a coastal boat can be a relatively light design. However, going offshore does not require sacrificing sailing performance. The classic Valiant 40 by Bob Perry is a wonderful example. Its low displacement, strong sailing ability, and comfortable layout make it an excellent candidate for long-distance cruising; many other recent designs are the same.

Italia 9.98

Italia Yachts created the Italia 9.98 Fuoriserie, which won the ORC - C - 2015 World Championship. She is a racing yacht that may also be used for cruising. However, the design is intended to race and win, and the mast and boom are composed of carbon fiber. The interior features include two double bedrooms, two sleepers in the saloon, a kitchen, and a chart table.

The 34-foot Italia 9.98 was clearly the most striking of the five boats that made up the Performance Cruiser class in terms of pure look. The boat comes in two versions: the 34 Club, designed for cruising and is distinguished by its twin wheels, and the 34 Fuoriserie, designed for racing.

Both versions have the same interior, which is extremely welcoming and modern for cruising. A wide trimmed in a teak cutaway that can also be used as a ring frame lead to the spacious double-berth forward, which virtually beckons you to climb in and kick far back. The drop-leaf table, crossed by the keel-stepped spar, is flanked by two huge center settees.

The galley and the navigation station, located to port and starboard, are welcome surprises. The galley contains a huge fridge and a two-burner stove gimballed, while the navigation station is bigger than you could anticipate for a boat this size.

Innovative, detachable cloth lockers may be offloaded while in race mode. Cabin doors encased in metal for durability are among the many appealing touches to this vessel. There's a large double stateroom to port and a tiny double cabin to starboard. Except for some teak trim, all furnishings and fixtures are sleek, white composite constructions that appear more aeronautical than nautical. Overall, the entire design and aesthetics are very nice and contemporary.

The cockpit is roomy on the inside; the molded-in bench seats may be enlarged with specialized storage bins, which can be left at the dock for racing and reinstalled when cruising. A large lazarette locker is located aft of the beam-width traveler, which is located aft of the tiller.

The open transom gives the impression of being aboard a larger boat. The German-style double-ended mainsheet is led below deck, adding to the modern motif; sheet leads are, of course, changeable. The genuinely exceptional nonskid is molded into the deck.

The boat has an optional sprit that could be used to fly, reaching, and off-wind sails. Another version of the sprit incorporates an anchor roller; the boat we were on did not have a windlass, but one is available. It would be simple to adapt this boat from racing to cruising mode.

The Grand Soleil 34

When the Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was established in the 1970s, its first model was a 34-footer designed by Finot. It was an instant success, with over 300 units sold. It set the firm on the path to success that lasted decades, mainly with a succession of considerably bigger, more complicated racer/cruisers. The maker opted to go back to its origins with the Grand Soleil 34 for 2020, and it's a fantastic boat.

There are a few key rating criteria that racing boats compete under these days, plus a rising movement of doublehanded classes in several major regattas. Since conditions vary dramatically depending on where you plan to sail, the Grand Soleil 34 doubles as a cruiser. The need for a versatile vessel has been taken into account by Grand Soleil and is evident in its exquisite design. The Grand Soleil 34 does this by offering a variety of keel, rig, and deck options, allowing owners to tailor their boat to their specific location or events.

The shallower of the two keel choices, which is also the ideal cruising configuration, draws under 6 feet and is equipped with a lead bulb; a deeper 7-foot-2-inch foil is also available. A conventional aluminum stick or one of two alternative carbon spars are available as rig options. The boat has dual rudders and wheels, but you can alternatively have a single rudder with a tiller. The power unit on our variant was a 20 hp diesel with saildrive, which was an option. The boat design has the optional 30 hp diesel with saildrive, with a 20 hp auxiliary as standard.

The accommodations are essentially the same regardless of the performance package you choose. You still have options, though. In cruising mode, the open layout features a wide double berth in the bow, but while racing, you can remove the cushions and their base to transform the area into massive sail stowage. For competitive sailors concerned with keeping weight to a minimum, most of the oak furnishings and floors may be replaced with composite materials or even carbon.

A pair of settees flank a drop-leaf table in the middle of the boat, and there's a wide double cabin aft, to port, and a capacious head on the opposite starboard side, via which you can reach a large storage compartment beneath the cockpit seat. The great news is that there is also plenty of storage space for sailing.

Impression 45.1

The Elan Impression 45.1 now features a longer and broader cockpit, defined by dual wheels, a split cockpit table, and a folding sunbed, as inspired by the Elan GT5. A contemporary vertical transom was built, and two big cockpit storage boxes that may be furnished with a grill, sink, or refrigerator. Because of its hull design and recognizable deck saloon windows, the Impression 45.1 is light and airy. The saloon has a big settee that completely surrounds the table without blocking the path.

The galley has been moved forward to provide greater space for living and navigation. You also get solid iroko wood for the interior furniture material after months of testing because it was discovered to have the best endurance characteristics, a lovely traditional aesthetic, and an acceptable pricing point. The Elan Impression 45.1 will be offered with two cabin configurations, one for friends and family and the other for demanding charter parties.

Customers may now select between an open transom for a sportier look and a closed transom with a wide swim platform for safety and comfort. One of the more noticeable improvements is a new window, which illuminates the back cabins and adds to her instantly identifiable appearance.

It's no wonder that many would-be bluewater cruisers have this German Frers design on their wish list. The hull is well-built, featuring a sturdy masthead sloop sail plan—200-mile days are not out of the question—and the deck arrangement is ergonomically efficient. Belowdecks, no two boats are alike, thanks to the builders' willingness to experiment with layout and finish. The RS (Raised saloon) model expands on the already spacious interior. The new Hylas 56 has a similar streamlined hull. It is no wonder that its owners praise the boat's seakeeping and maneuverability.

In the forepeak, a skipper's cabin with an attached bathroom is also available, which is just one of the many comforts on the Meta.

The Meta 50' is constructed of ultra-resistant prestressed Strongall aluminum and may be customized to meet your exact requirements. Thanks to the ballastable dual keel system, the TurboKeels version will have performance comparable to a 3.50m draught keelboat while simultaneously reducing the list by 15-20°.

Domani introduces the S30, a one-of-a-kind sailing experience that combines sportiness, elegance, and design in a single exquisite sports boat. Less is more, and free time is valuable; that is what you get with this cruiser. The design also uses a back-to-basics approach, with fewer components and less upkeep. The Beneteau Oceanis 30.1, a 31-foot-3-inch tiny yacht that was best-equipped and spec'd out as a specialized cruising boat, was also given the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don't be fooled by her modest internal amenities; she is a lively small ship.

The sail layout emphasizes power aloft with a single-spreader fractional number rig with a square-top main. Our test boat has an optional bowsprit and a lap-streak genoa; the normal version features a self-tacking 100 percent headsail. Although dual wheels make handling straightforward, old-school men (like me) can choose a tiller.

A boarding ladder and a small fold-down boarding step are included on the transom. Also, a Facnor headsail furler is stationed alongside the Lewmar windlass on the opposite end. The overall level of attention to detail is outstanding.

The adaptability of the 30.1 was a strong selling point for the judging panel. There are four keel variations, as well as a centerboard. A tabernacle may be added to the deck-stepped mast for simple lowering and trailering to a new location or navigating waterways. It was also the most affordable option in the category, at $160,000. The benefits just kept on coming.

The forward V-berth is undoubtedly spectacular, and the deck-stepped spar described before freed up the space below, especially in the center saloon and eating area. Local News | Man arrested after report of armed person at Towson University; no weapon found

A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after an armed person was believed to be on Towson University’s campus, Baltimore County Police said. No weapon was ultimately located.

County police said officers responding to reports of shoplifting at about 3:35 p.m. in the area of Washington Avenue and West Pennsylvania Avenue in Towson found a person who fled the scene and was believed to be armed.

The university police department said in an alert that it was notified soon after of an “on campus armed person “ at the intersection of University Avenue and Towsontown Boulevard, which was temporarily closed by police.

Baltimore County Police and Towson University Police took the man into custody at the scene. He was arrested and charged with robbery, first-degree assault and “other theft-related charges,” said county police spokesperson Trae Corbin.

Those with information are asked to contact the university’s police at 410-704-4444.

What Sentencing Could Look Like if Trump Is Found Guilty

For all the attention to and debate over the unfolding trial of Donald Trump in Manhattan, there has been surprisingly little of it paid to a key element: its possible outcome and, specifically, the prospect that a former and potentially future president could be sentenced to prison time.

The case — brought by Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, against Mr. Trump — represents the first time in our nation’s history that a former president is a defendant in a criminal trial. As such, it has generated lots of debate about the case’s legal strength and integrity, as well as its potential impact on Mr. Trump’s efforts to win back the White House.

A review of thousands of cases in New York that charged the same felony suggests something striking: If Mr. Trump is found guilty, incarceration is an actual possibility. It’s not certain, of course, but it is plausible.

Jury selection has begun, and it’s not too soon to talk about what the possibility of a sentence, including a prison sentence, would look like for Mr. Trump, for the election and for the country — including what would happen if he is re-elected.

The case focuses on alleged interference in the 2016 election, which consisted of a hush-money payment Michael Cohen, the former president’s fixer at the time, made in 2016 to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. Mr. Bragg is arguing that the cover-up cheated voters of the chance to fully assess Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

This may be the first criminal trial of a former president in American history, but if convicted, Mr. Trump’s fate is likely to be determined by the same core factors that guide the sentencing of every criminal defendant in New York State Court.

Comparable cases. The first factor is the base line against which judges measure all sentences: how other defendants have been treated for similar offenses. My research encompassed almost 10,000 cases of felony falsifying business records that have been prosecuted across the state of New York since 2015. Over a similar period, the Manhattan D.A. has charged over 400 of these cases . In roughly the first year of Mr. Bragg’s tenure, his team alone filed 166 felony counts for falsifying business records against 34 people or companies.

Contrary to claims that there will be no sentence of incarceration for falsifying business records, when a felony conviction involves serious misconduct, defendants can be sentenced to some prison time. My analysis of the most recent data indicates that approximately one in 10 cases in which the most serious charge at arraignment is falsifying business records in the first degree and in which the court ultimately imposes a sentence, results in a term of imprisonment.

To be clear, these cases generally differ from Mr. Trump’s case in one important respect: They typically involve additional charges besides just falsifying records. That clearly complicates what we might expect if Mr. Trump is convicted.

Nevertheless, there are many previous cases involving falsifying business records along with other charges where the conduct was less serious than is alleged against Mr. Trump and prison time was imposed. For instance, Richard Luthmann was accused of attempting to deceive voters — in his case, impersonating New York political figures on social media in an attempt to influence campaigns. He pleaded guilty to three counts of falsifying business records in the first degree (as well as to other charges). He received a sentence of incarceration on the felony falsification counts (although the sentence was not solely attributable to the plea).

A defendant in another case was accused of stealing in excess of $50,000 from her employer and, like in this case, falsifying one or more invoices as part of the scheme. She was indicted on a single grand larceny charge and ultimately pleaded guilty to one felony count of business record falsification for a false invoice of just under $10,000. She received 364 days in prison.

To be sure, for a typical first-time offender charged only with run-of-the-mill business record falsification, a prison sentence would be unlikely. On the other hand, Mr. Trump is being prosecuted for 34 counts of conduct that might have changed the course of American history.

Seriousness of the crime. Mr. Bragg alleges that Mr. Trump concealed critical information from voters (paying hush money to suppress an extramarital relationship) that could have harmed his campaign, particularly if it came to light after the revelation of another scandal — the “Access Hollywood” tape . If proved, that could be seen not just as unfortunate personal judgment but also, as Justice Juan Merchan has described it, an attempt “to unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential election.”

History and character. To date, Mr. Trump has been unrepentant about the events alleged in this case. There is every reason to believe that will not change even if he is convicted, and lack of remorse is a negative at sentencing. Justice Merchan’s evaluation of Mr. Trump’s history and character may also be informed by the other judgments against him, including Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud, a jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll and a related defamation verdict by a second jury.

Justice Merchan may also weigh the fact that Mr. Trump has been repeatedly held in contempt , warned , fined and gagged by state and federal judges. That includes for statements he made that exposed witnesses, individuals in the judicial system and their families to danger. More recently, Mr. Trump made personal attacks on Justice Merchan’s daughter, resulting in an extension of the gag order in the case. He now stands accused of violating it again by commenting on witnesses.

What this all suggests is that a term of imprisonment for Mr. Trump, while far from certain for a former president, is not off the table. If he receives a sentence of incarceration, perhaps the likeliest term is six months, although he could face up to four years, particularly if Mr. Trump chooses to testify, as he said he intends to do , and the judge believes he lied on the stand . Probation is also available, as are more flexible approaches like a sentence of spending every weekend in jail for a year.

We will probably know what the judge will do within 30 to 60 days of the end of the trial, which could run into mid-June. If there is a conviction, that would mean a late summer or early fall sentencing.

Justice Merchan would have to wrestle in the middle of an election year with the potential impact of sentencing a former president and current candidate.

If Mr. Trump is sentenced to a period of incarceration, the reaction of the American public will probably be as polarized as our divided electorate itself. Yet as some polls suggest — with the caveat that we should always be cautious of polls early in the race posing hypothetical questions — many key swing state voters said they would not vote for a felon.

If Mr. Trump is convicted and then loses the presidential election, he will probably be granted bail, pending an appeal, which will take about a year. That means if any appeals are unsuccessful, he will most likely have to serve any sentence starting sometime next year. He will be sequestered with his Secret Service protection; if it is less than a year, probably in Rikers Island. His protective detail will probably be his main company, since Mr. Trump will surely be isolated from other inmates for his safety.

If Mr. Trump wins the presidential election, he can’t pardon himself because it is a state case. He will be likely to order the Justice Department to challenge his sentence, and department opinions have concluded that a sitting president could not be imprisoned, since that would prevent the president from fulfilling the constitutional duties of the office. The courts have never had to address the question, but they could well agree with the Justice Department.

So if Mr. Trump is convicted and sentenced to a period of incarceration, its ultimate significance is probably this: When the American people go to the polls in November, they will be voting on whether Mr. Trump should be held accountable for his original election interference.
