For a top-class cruising and fishing experience, look no further than the KAT Sport. This 3.3m inflatable boat is fast and efficient, and it has space for the whole family. Featuring an open bow, catamaran hull and collapsible open transom. This boat will fold up smaller than anything else its size. The KAT Sport comes with everything you need to get out on the water! Including collapsible launch wheels and fishing rod holders as standard. It can even transform into a paddleboard using the included attachable fin.

Catamaran design also means easier planing with lower powered engines ( from a 6hp upwards) than a “V” shaped hull. That equals more fuel economy and a light, manageable rig.

Whether you’re looking for a tender, riverboat, or coastal explorer, you will find what you’re after in this vessel. The open bow lends itself to easy boarding and recovery, great for diving trips and exploring!

KAT Sport 330 Features:

  • Catamaran Hull
  • Seats: Two aluminium seat
  • Fabric: Super strong 0.9mm 1100 denier cloth

1 review for Boatworld KAT Sport 330

' data-src=

Ian Webster – 21 May 2023

Following on from viewing the new Kat Sport 330 in the flesh at its Boatlife launch, just picked up their pre production demo boat from those nice guys at Boatworld for some real on the water testing. Big thanks to Boatworld for the loan of their ‘only one in the country’ new Kat Sport 330

Comes neatly packed in two boxes which easily fit into the average car and soon had the little Kat assembled and inflated. Very straightforward, quick and easy with all components fitting well…reckon it’s less than a twenty minute job with a half decent pump once organised.

All looking pretty good thus far. Only reservation would be motor looks a tad high even sat straight on transom. Might ventilate, might not, will find out tomorrow for its maiden voyage if the weather holds out.

Great weather on test day with a gentle cross shore breeze, small lazy swell inside the reefs and a mild chop further out….time to get the little Kat wet.

A breeze to pull through the dunes, down the beach and easily launched with the included transom wheels. Didn’t notice too much nose weight despite fully loaded with 9.8 hp motor, 12l fuel tank, anchor tub and kit bag.

After warming up the motor we were off and it all worked pretty much straight out of the box, which for a ‘cat’ is pretty impressive. Any reservations of motor sat a bit high were unfounded as only very minor ventilation experienced. Ran with virtually no ventilation fully trimmed in on pin one (transom is vertical on these). Trimming out to pin two, arguably more ideal for ride trim, resulted in intermittent ventilation particularly getting out the hole. We did experience some splashing on both trim settings, slightly more pronounced downwind, but nothing too serious and certainly not coming back into boat. Of course, the above is only pertinent to this motor/boat combination and conditions on the day. A cupped prop and/or a hydrofoil (Permatrim are good) are often recommended upgrades to sort stubborn catamaran ventilation issues.

Performance with the Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke running stock prop, one up plus kit, pops quickly onto the plane and tops out at a very impressive top speed of just over 19 knots nudging 6000rpm. Running at a more relaxed 4500 and 5000rpm achieved cruising speeds of 14 and 16 knots respectively. The little Kat will remain on the plane down to around 11/12 knots.

Ride wise it’s everything you’d expect from a ‘cat’. Nice and stable just pootling around with its big tubes and a dry ride, open it up though and it’s a little hooligan! Wind on the revs it pops quickly up onto the plane and then the air cushion can be really worked if you keep the power on to seriously smooth out the ride in chop. Definitely a better, and faster, ride head to wind/waves. In a following sea/downwind, then slightly prone to a little bow steering now and again, just to keep you on your toes, and harder to keep that air cushion working for you. Tracks really well and corners flat with tenacious grip in tight turns, so well you need to hang on or sit low. The massive 500mm dia tubes providing a confidence inspiring ride, help minimise any bow steering downwind (common on cats) and plenty of buoyancy for heavier motors. Will also be good fun playing in the surf zone (no real waves today unfortunately) where the open transom instantly sheds any water taken onboard.

Overall build quality, materials and fittings, even on this pre production model, look more than acceptable and particularly at this price point. Only real negative comment would be the tubes are single chamber….but then so are Takacats at this length.

For anyone interested in one of the Takacat/TrueKit Kiwi style catamarans, or indeed anyone just after something sporty or a little different, then certainly worth adding the Kat Sport to your shortlist.

The transoms are not designed to to take the extra load of towing. so we dont recommend using sibs to tow.

Happy Cat History Image

SAILING INNOVATION SINCE THE 1960s

Since the 1960s.

With the purchase of the Semperit inflatable boat production in 1986, the Grabner company also took over the production of the first demountable catamaran – the Semperit Kat. This catamaran has been in production since the 1960s.

In 1986, Grabner purchased Semperit, which included taking over the production of the first demountable catamaran, the Semperit Kat, a boat that was eventually renamed to the one we know and love today, the Happy Cat.

The Happy Cat Story

In production since the 1960s, Happy Cat’s innovations are backed by decades of research and insights from recreational and professional sailors alike. The first catamarans were made of wood, but today’s models include parts made of aluminum and rubber, providing a lightweight and optimized sailing experience.

The most recent upgrade of the Happy Cat Evolution and Hurricane to a high-tech carbon mast shows that the innovative DNA of the Grabner brand will continue to push what’s possible in the inflatable catamaran space.

SHOP HAPPY CAT BOATS

The Finest Handmade Inflatable Boats

Happy Cat boats are made from high quality, eco-friendly materials, and are handmade in the Grabner factory in Austria. The catamaran boats and hulls are made of a special EPDM/natural rubber boat skin that is easy to repair, The inner coating of natural rubber offers maximum airtightness so the air stays in the hose longer and you can do more sailing, and less pumping. Also see our hand pump .

Happy Cat Story Image

It’s one thing for a boat of Happy Cat’s caliber to fit in two to three bags, it’s another to only need 30-40 minutes to set up and hit the water. Once you’re on the water, the right conditions can produce speeds of over 20 knots. A piece of paradise that only a sailor knows. Clear skies and a strong wind await.

Warranty Boat Image

Grabner provides a 24-month total warranty on all boats and a 7-year warranty on the boat-skin. For full details on what is covered in the warranty, reference the Happy Cat Owner’s Manual here.

The catamaran inflatable boats from Takacat are ideal for divers, camping, caravans and motorhomes

Removable floor

It's hard to ignore the portability and comfort aspect of our fully removable inflatable floor system. Extremely rigid when inflated (10 psi), "standing on board is no problem", and both easy and quick to deflate and store for transport or storage. This is a big advantage over inflatable boats, which have a built-in floor or RIB, which can both hold water.

PVC or TPU (welded seams without plasticisers)

As standard, the boats are made of quality 5-Layer PVC (0,9mm - 1000 denier - 1100g/m²) fabric from  SIJIATEX,  which has a very strong UV protection. Optional boats are also available in TPU (1,2mm - welded seams without plasticisers). The 10PSI high pressure floor, including the additional 1mm thick PVC protective coating, is made exclusively of PVC with DropStitch technology. TPU is more abrasion-resistant than PVC and Hypalon/CSM, rafting boats or boats for extreme operating conditions (-70°C to +80°C) are made from TPU, for example. In contrast to PVC, TPU hoses do not contain any plasticisers, i.e. the welded seams remain supple even after welding and can withstand higher pressures than glued Hypalon/CSM seams.

Takacat - Takayak-395

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Catamarans are much more tilt-resistant than monohulls, and this also applies to kayaks. Since TAKACAT exclusively develops boats in catamaran design, it was logical that the new kayak from TAKACAT will also be a catamaran => Takayak-395

Generous continuous load area

The number 395 describes the overall length of the Takayak. But much more interesting is the usable length of the inner high-pressure floor of 370cm, with a continuous width of 42cm. So the Takayak offers plenty of loading space for 2 people with luggage, parents with children or for one/two people with one or more dogs.

29cm drive hoses with protective strips on the undersides

The two driving hoses with their 29cm diameter are well proportioned for a maximum load of 260Kg and are powerfully supported by the large-surface high-pressure floor. The lower connecting floor between the two drive hoses additionally protects the inner high-pressure floor in case of ground contact and during landing.

10PSI "Drop-Stitch" high pressure floor

The 8cm thick high-pressure floor can be inflated with an operating pressure of up to 10PSI = 689mbar thanks to its drop-stitch technology. This creates a stable loading platform and shields the entire seating and loading area from the water surface.

3 air chambers + safety overpressure valves

Each driving hose is equipped with a Halkey-Roberts valve at the stern and an overpressure safety valve at the bow. Accidental over-pumping of the tubes is therefore impossible and harmful pressure increases due to strong sunlight are also avoided. The Takayak-395 has a total of 3 independent large-volume air chambers.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

One-seam design + 5-layer PVC fabric skin

One-seam design means that each tube is made from a single piece of skin. The tubes have only one longitudinal seam on the outside, which is additionally covered with a resistant 1mm thick protective strip and thus doubly secured. At the bow and stern, the so-called bumpers (end pieces) are then glued in, also double-secured. The One-Seam design reduces the number of seams and seam intersections by over 50% compared to half-shell production and thus significantly reduces the possibility of possible leaks in the seam areas. The 5-ply fabric-reinforced PVC skin with 0.9mm thickness and 1000 dtex meets the standard of quality inflatable boats. Optionally, the Takayak-395 can also be manufactured in 1mm Hypalon/CSM.

Open bow and stern

The open bow and stern create a forced bilge. Water that penetrates the Takayak-395, e.g. due to an overflowing wave or heavy rain, immediately escapes again; no bilge valve can realise such a bilge capability. Another advantage is that it is easy to return out of the water. No time-consuming safety and re-entry training is necessary.

Mobile in a bag

The Takayak-395, together with the high pressure floor, the two paddles, the two kayak seats and the hand air pump can be stowed in a transport bag. The transport bag measures 120 x 40 x 40cm (length/width/height). The driving hoses and the high-pressure floor together weigh 20Kg, the completely parked carrying bag with all accessories weighs approx. 24Kg, depending on the model of the hand pump.

Assembly - quick and uncomplicated

Setting up the Takayak-395 is quick and uncomplicated:

  • Unroll the drive hoses and inflate to 250mbar (3.6PSI) at the stern using the Halkey-Roberts valves.
  • Insert the high-pressure floor, fix it to the underbody at the bow and stern using the tension straps and inflate to 689mbar (10PSI).
  • Insert the seats and tighten them using the side D-rings.
  • Assemble the paddles and adjust them to your personal style.

And the Takayak-395 is ready to go out. Depending on the number of people and the load, one or two seats can be clipped in.

Electric Engine connected with a FinBox adapter

Thanks to the straight-through connecting floor between the two tubes, the Takayak-395/300 offers the possibility of e.g. gluing a slide-in fin box from down against the connecting floor and thus using an electric motor as a supporting drive aid. There are many manufacturers on the market who offer slide-in electric motors with FinBox adapters, e.g. Vaquita from ePropulsion, the Scupajet from Austria or the new E-Finn from JAYKAY in Germany. The course is then steered with the help of the paddle. Depending on the drive, speeds of up to 10Km/h can be achieved.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Kayaking redesigned - Takayak-395 - the redesigned kayak from Takacat offers advantages for all those who do not want to do without comfort and unique functionality when kayaking. As a catamaran, a stable position in the water, a ride as if on two rails, boarding and disembarking via the open bow is effortless, even out of the water back into the kayak, plenty of space for dogs and luggage travelling with you and a unique forced bilge.

Takacat LXHD-Series - Heavy Duty Rescue Boats

inflatable catamaran speed boats

The Takacat models 340LX-HD, 380LX-HD, 420LX-HD and 460LX-HD are available as heavy-duty versions for water rescue and other operations under difficult conditions. An ideal rapid intervention boat (SEB) for the fire brigade, water rescue and police. Due to their low immersion depth, TAKACAT catamaran inflatable boats are ideal for shallow water operations. The open bow makes it much easier to transfer people into the boat. The same applies to rescue divers and lifeguards. The open transom guarantees that the Takacats never fill up. Any water that is taken over flows straight back out of the boat.

In the heavy-duty version, the Takacats are made of 1.2mm/1450 weight RESC (red/dark blue) thick PVC fabric, alternatively 1.5mm/1750 weight MIL (black) thick PVC fabric or alternatively 1mm Hypalon/CSM. The top of the both tubes is double reinforced with a wide strip of PVC skin to protect against heavy uniforms.

The heavy-duty high-pressure floor has a full-surface and all-round PVC protective coating with an additional layer on the top (2mm) so that the boat can be walked on with heavy footwear without any problems and carrying heavy equipment is no problem.

The heavy-duty transom, made of 2mm stainless steel square tube plus 50mm thick PE1000 transom plates with additional stainless steel reinforcement, can be fitted with a maximum of a 15 or 20hp outboard motor, depending on the model. Thanks to the open bow, a transfer from the water into the boat can be carried out much more easily than with inflatable boats with a bow bulge. Divers can also return to the boat more easily. The open transom allows water that inevitably flows into the boat during a rescue operation to run off again immediately, and the same applies to wave action and heavy rain.

Due to the catamaran construction, the Takacat can also be used for ice rescue in winter, the same applies to the heavy-duty high-pressure floor. Optionally, a GRP floor can be used instead of the high-pressure floor.

The Takacat catamaran inflatable boats of the "Heavy-Duty" LX series are custom-made, i.e. special customer requests can be included in the production.

Takacat - LXRIB - RIB Catamaran with Aluminium Floor

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Takacat-LXRIB - The special advantages of inflatable boats, rigid hull boats and catamarans are combined in the LXRIB from Takacat to create an interesting solution. A combination of hydrodynamic and aredynamic influences allow the Takacat LXRIB to float over the water instead of cutting through it, resulting in decent planing characteristics when using compact outboards and good fuel efficiency ..... Videos

With its large centre floor and integrated bow platform (460LXR) with anchor locker, the Takacat LXRIB offers more space than other inflatable boats in this size range.

Due to its catamaran-specific stability and gliding behaviour, the Takacat LXRIB is a very good boat for multiple uses such as diving, fishing, camping, water skiing and tubing. The robust Takacat LXRIB is also a very good choice as a safety and support boat for all types of water sports and for boat hire.

TPU (1.2mm - welded seams) is the standard material for the LXR tubes. In the marine environment, boats are constantly exposed to scratches and scrapes on rough surfaces such as sharp rocks. When designing RIB tubes, it is of utmost importance that they can withstand the extreme conditions. Here too, TPU offers advantages over CSM/Hypalon for inflatable boats. TPU is much more abrasion resistant than CSM/Hypalon. This is one of the main reasons why the US space agency NASA uses TPU instead of CSM coatings for most of its textile applications.

RIBs, and especially Extreme RIBs used as military and commercial sea rescue boats, are often used in harsh weather conditions. These include both scorching and sub-zero temperatures. It is vital that the coating of the hoses can withstand these extreme conditions. High temperatures are detrimental to some textile coatings as they increase oxidation of the coating and the underlying fabric. Low temperatures, on the other hand, can cause many materials to lose their flexibility and tear or fail. Both temperature extremes generally affect CSM coatings more than TPU coatings. TPU generally retains its performance properties at temperatures from -50°C to +70°C, meaning that Takacat-LXR can be used from the Arctic to the Caribbean.

Takacat 340LXRIB - Aluminium Floor

inflatable catamaran speed boats

The new LXRIB from Takacat combines the aerodynamic design of the LX series with a robust connecting floor made of marine aluminium. The 340LXR will make its world debut at BOOT 2024 in Düsseldorf . The 340LXR and the 460LXR are currently available. Depending on the model, the LXRIB can be motorised with 50 hp. The LXRIB series has been consistently developed with recyclability in mind, i.e. the RIB floor is made of marine aluminium and the welded tubes are made of TPU. TPU can be welded like PVC but has no plasticisers that can evaporate, i.e. it remains elastic even after the seams have been welded. In addition, the softening temperature of TPU is considerably higher than that of PVC, which is a plus for hot regions and when the boat is transported on the davits. Unlike PVC, TPU can be recycled and is compostable. The LXRIB is optionally available with a bow stowage box. The 340LXR weighs 65kg and the 460LXR weighs 105kg. For a RIB, these values can be described as lightweight.

As an option, the LXRIB models can also be equipped with bench consoles, jockey seats and combination consoles, see examples above. Aluminium equipment carriers and electric jack plates are available as further options.

Question:  Why is this catamaran rated for only a 9.9HP outboard and not a more powerful motor?

Answer:  Mini Cat boats are not designed for high-speed racing. Unlike XCAT racing boats, they don't have sponsors or fiberglass wings that enhance stability at high speeds. Mini Cats are built to be an affordable, budget-friendly option for smooth cruising with small gas outboards or electric trolling motors. Using a more powerful outboard can be risky, especially in strong winds, as improper weight distribution or excessive speed can cause the boat to flip backward. The wide, upward-curved front bow can act like a wing when going fast against strong gusts, increasing the risk. To ensure safety, the boat is limited to a 9.9HP motor. As always, when operating any watercraft, it's important to wear a life jacket and use the outboard's lanyard kill switch for added safety.

Testimonials

Easiest boat I have ever bought and staff were excellent and very helpful. Absolutely no problem purchasing from Australia and better than anything I could buy in Australia.

Great looking boat I haven't had the time to use the boat yet, but have assembled and inflated the boat. Compared to the Zodiac Granride MK3, it's a lot lighter, and the inflatable deck is much easier then the zodiacs hard deck to get in place. So just from looking at the TrueKit, i think the quality is up at the zodiac level, and looking forward to try out the boat in the water!

We’ve had our boat for a few weeks now, and I can honestly say we love it. It’s super stable and planes easily. It is super light, so loading it correctly matters, but that is super easy to do.

Discovery 330 has exceeded my expectations after my sea trials and break in of my Yamaha F6. Set up with the supplied hand pump worked well. Spring loaded wheels are a must have. Once inflated inspection of the seams and construction confirmed my research that this is a high quality craft that will provide years of enjoyment. After break in of my Yamaha with one person onboard the F6 pushed her along nicely.

Thundercat: The Most Fun For Your Money

a man and a woman together in a thundercat racing boat, jumping over a wave

Come on, admit it, you’ve probably already fantasized how it would feel to ride on the water at over 50 knots. Well, such speeds reach only very few boats and those that do often are big vessels with high-horsepower engines and are therefore quite expensive. But there is one exception: the catamaran-style inflatable boats, known as Thundercats, Zapcats, or Pencil Ducks. With an empty weight to power ratio of about 3 kg/hp, such an inflatable boat is on par with a Porsche 911 Turbo Coupé (that’s only with the standard configuration of 50 hp!). Yes, it’s true that comparing a boat to a car sounds strange, but in this comparison, it becomes clear what incredible powerful boats we’re talking about. Is your heart already beating faster now? Then learn more about these impressive powerboats in this article!

Table of Contents

Different Terminology

As mentioned at the beginning, various terms are in use for the catamaran-like inflatable boats: Thundercat, Zapcat and Pencil Duck. Thundercat and Pencil Duck are generic terms for this type of boat, although Pencil Duck is rather seldom used. Zapcat, on the other hand, is a brand name used by the South African manufacturer Gemini, and thus strictly speaking refers only to Thundercats from that one manufacturer. However, many people use Zapcat as a synonym for Thundercats/Pencil Ducks, although this is not correct.

History of Origins

The origin of Thundercats can be traced back to the coast of South Africa, where in the 1980s a somewhat crazy person started mounting a very powerful outboard motor on a rather small inflatable boat and then having the fun of a lifetime in the surf. A little later, an inflatable boat was developed to meet the requirements of high motorization and the rough water conditions in the surf on the coast of South Africa – the Thundercat was born. This type of boating quickly gained popularity around the coast of South Africa and organized races began to be held. Later, people around the globe followed enjoying such racing events, especially in Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain. However, the Thundercat also gained popularity for recreational activities beyond racing.

Basically, Thundercats are a special type of Soft Inflatable Boats (SIBs), but the fundamental feature is that Thundercats have two speed tubes (also known as hijackers) under the main tubes. The collapsible bottom of the boat is usually made of wooden, aluminum or even carbon plates. At the bow, the two main tubes are connected with a nose cone, which is either made of GRP or carbon. Another special feature is that no conventional, closed transom is installed, but an open “wash through transom”, usually made of aluminum.

The classic dimensions of a Thundercat are 400 to 440 mm in length and 200 to 230 mm in width. The usual empty weight of such a boat is less than 85 kg and the standard engine (for racing) is 50 hp, although there are also some who motorize their Thundercat with up to 75 hp. For the engines, almost exclusively the light 2 stroke short shaft engines are used in the basic configuration with hand start and tiller produced by Yamaha or Tohatsu. The standard tiller is often modified by lengthening it and/or adding shock absorbers to improve control even in tough conditions.

There is little space inside the boats, but the boats are primarily intended for two passengers only, the driver and the co-driver. For the fuel tank, an ordinary mobile one made of plastic is used, which is then usually attached to the floor at the aft near the transom. But here, in favor of weight distribution, the exact position of the tank can be varied. In addition, the boats are equipped with holding straps on the tubes and on the floor, which allow the crew to find a hold on the boat even at high speeds.

In the figure below you can see quite well the layout of a Thundercat.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Now that we all know what a Thundercat is and how it is constructed, let’s take a look at the concrete advantages and disadvantages of such a unique design.

Unique Handling and Ride Characteristics

Due to the extremely low weight and compact dimensions, the advantages in terms of handling already come into play when launching the boat, because a Thundercat can easily be launched alone without a trailer. Even launching on the beach is no problem, after all, the boats were designed precisely for these conditions. Of course, the same applies to getting the boat out of the water.

In addition, a Thundercat also provides outstanding handling on the water, because the low weight makes any maneuver child’s play and thanks to the speed tubes, the boat runs like on rails and even tight turns at high speeds are possible. The direct tiller steering also ensures that the handling is very direct, and you get great dynamic feedback steering the boat.

The catamaran-style design also makes for a very smooth ride, as a kind of air cushion is created between the hull and the water surface, which has a dampening effect while minimizing friction and maximizing buoyancy. It also prevents the tube from getting sucked down at higher speeds, as is often the case with conventional SIBs (for details read our comparison between SIBs and RIBs ).

In the video below includes some stunning drone footage you get a good impression of the great ride characteristics.

Superb Weight to Power Ratio

As mentioned in the introduction, the Thundercats’ weight-to-power ratio is simply unbeatable. And that, together with the great handling, of course makes for a permanent grin on the water. Some consider Thundercats to be a better alternative to jet skis because of their guaranteed fun, but they are cheaper, more flexible and much cooler.

Great Affordability

In terms of initial investment, Thundercats are relatively budget-friendly, especially when you consider what a tremendous value they offer in terms of fun. They are also very inexpensive to operate and maintain, as there is no need for a permanent berth or even a trailer (though one is clearly recommended), and fuel consumption is also very economical. Any repairs can be carried out on your own, which is also easy on the wallet.

A True Eye Catcher

Despite all these great advantages, Thundercats are still rather rare to find and are therefore often real eye-catchers. In addition, many manufacturers of Thundercats offer a high degree of customization (in terms of color scheme) and you can create a true one-of-a-kind, which in our eyes is another advantage.

Disadvantages

Risk of flipping over.

However, the combination of high speeds and low weight comes with the risk of flipping over with the boat. Especially in wind and waves you should be careful. With the right caution, a Thundercat is nevertheless very safe, and you should not be deterred by its popular use as a racing boat, because it is also very well suited as a recreational boat.

Thundercat racing boat having only contact to the water on one side, almost flipping over

Sacrifices in Recreational Use

Just now we wrote about the fact that a Thundercat is also great as a recreational boat, but certain disadvantages cannot be ignored. For one thing, there is only little space on board for passengers and equipment, and especially for smaller children, safe riding is quite limited. Secondly, the transom is open, which is great for use in the surf, as any water that gets into the boat immediately flows out through the transom. However, not only the water is flushed out, but also everything else that is lying around in the boat and that is not secured. However, if this should really become a problem and you use the boat primarily for recreational purposes, you can easily close the transom.

Note: More information regarding a family-friendly, more leisure-oriented version of the Thundercat can be found further below in this article.

Limited Availability of Outboards

As described above, the choice of outboard motor falls primarily on light, simple 2-stroke models. The problem, however, is that in some parts of the world (e.g., throughout the EU), these can no longer be purchased new by private consumers, as they do not meet the strict emissions regulations. Within these regions, one must rely on the limited second-hand supply or obtain an engine through complicated, not entirely legal means.

Modern 4-strokes are great engines, but they often weigh considerably more and have the problem that they cannot be made ready to run again as quickly and easily as a robust 2-stroke in the event of flipping the boat over.

In the table below we have listed all the advantages and disadvantages once again as an overview.

Aquarius Inflatables

Another manufacturer from South Africa with a very good reputation, which also offers the Thundercat in different sizes and variations. They have also developed a few RIBs, including a catamaran-style RIB.

Infanta Inflatables

The last famous manufacturer we want to present to you comes, like the others, from South Africa and offers, in addition to its P1 Pencil Thundercat, other significantly larger inflatables.

Bonus: Compromise Between Performance and Recreational Suitability

If you are enthusiastic about the concept of the Thundercats but are not interested in racing and family suitability and practicality are important to you, then we have something for you! Some of the manufacturers listed above offer Thundercats with a “closed nose”. This means that the bow does not consist of a rigid nose cone, but of a continuous tube, just like that of a conventional inflatable boat. Basically, this variation of the Thundercat is no longer a real Thundercat, but rather a normal SIB with the distinctive feature that speed tubes are attached to the hull. The result is an exciting fusion that combines the performance advantages of the Thundercat with the practicality of a normal SIB. Although you must sacrifice a little performance compared to a purebred Thundercat, in many cases this may be perfectly tolerable.

Such a type of inflatable is offered by Ceasar Inflatables with their 4.1 Surfcat , by Aquarius Inflatables with their 4.1m Aquacat Sport Boat , as well as by Gemini Marine with their GRX 420 . Zodiac Nautic, probably one of the best-known inflatable boat manufacturers, had similar boats on offer for a long time with their Futura series, but for some time now this has been dropped out of their product range and, as far as we know, can only be purchased through the Zodiac Milpro brand, which is aimed at professionals.

In the following picture you can see a Zodiac Futura competing with a racing boat in 1989. Unfortunately, we do not know how the race ended…

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zodiac Nautic (@zodiac_nautic)

And here is the 4.1m Aquacat Sport Boat from Aquarius Inflatables. At first glance you might think it was a conventional SIB, but take a closer look and you’ll see the speed tubes under the main tube.

Glued Seams vs. Welded Seams

Welded seams are often used for RIBs as they are affordable, typically easy to do, and inflated most of the time. Glued seams are best for boats you intend to fold and unfold constantly.

Welded seams become brittle and will start to leak. Additionally, they are not totally repairable as you can only patch them up, which compromises your boat’s quality and performance.

You want to purchase glued seamed boats, which are more flexible and have higher holding power in complex shapes and sizes.

Frequently Asked Question

Yes, you most definitely can, but there are a number of little details you and your team need to remember when leaving it inflated. Equipping your dinghy catamaran with chaps is best to protect it against UV rays and keep off bird poop. Inflatable bottom paint is also one thing to help your boat contend with any growth in your waters.

Inflatable catamarans can last for a very long time, provided you take good care of them. Your inflatable catamaran can last for many years with proper maintenance and storage.

Insider Advice

If there’s one thing you need to remember when purchasing and maneuvering inflatable catamarans, it’s safety. You may want to be the next Laura Dekker or chill out in the water on some days.

Cracker Bay Thundercats

High Performance Inflatable Catamarans

Inflatable Thundercat Racing Boats in the US!

Thundercat Racing.  Thundercat racing is why you’re here.  The evolution of design from highly competitive thundercat racing in South Africa has produced wonderful technology for all of us to enjoy.

We  import genuine South African hulls by Aquarius, Caesar, Infanta, Thundercat, Gemini and Mako.  Check our new and used thundercat inventory !

Stick with South African thundercat hulls for quality and performance that will guarantee years of reliable fun.  “A used South African hull is usually better than a new hull from somewhere else.”  – Mr. Cracker

What is a Thundercat?

Thundercats are catamaran RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boat), a high performance relative to the Zodiak.  They go by many names throughout the world (pencil duck, rubber duck, zapcat etc) but Thundercat is the most popular in the US. The inflatable sponsons have an aggressive profile in contrast to traditional recreational catamarans that allow them to turn like they are on rails. The hulls weigh around 200 pounds which helps them rocket from waves.

The second most exhilarating event of your life

Often raced in the surf, thundercats are great for rough water conditions because of their large flotation sponsons and open transoms. Any water that makes it into the vessel, quickly runs out the back through the transom. Although it can look dangerous, thundercats are actually safer than most vessels on the water. Typically, a thundercat will have six independently inflated chambers. If one is punctured, the remaining five will easily keep the vessel afloat.

Come race Thundercats in Florida at events like the BayLoosa Challenge!

The Physics

Thundercats are usually raced 2-up (driver and copilot).  Top speed and acceleration will be better with only a driver but the ballast of a copilot is helpful for making hairpin turns.  Since the hull weights about 200 pounds and the motor weighs about 200 pounds, the movement of a 100 – 200 pound copilot about the cockpit can drastically change the location of the center of gravity and thus the ability to maneuver.

Thundercats are typically outfitted with 40 to 90 HP outboard motors. The lighter the motor however, the better the handling.  The best motor for a thundercat inflatable is a 40 or 50, Yamaha or Tohatsu, short shaft, pull start, manual tilt carbureted 2 stroke.  If you want max power, the best practical setup is a 40 HP outboard Mercury 3 cylinders of 1997-2005 vintage, ported to produce upwards of 90 HP.   4 strokes and fuel injected 2 strokes are sensitive to submersion and that’s why the carbureted 2 strokes of yesteryear are still the best fit for thundercat racing.  Carbureted 2 strokes are great motors for thundercat power due to the inherent lack of electronics, high power to weight ratios and no need for a starting battery.

Check out new and used motor inventory !

Fun in the sun

Thundercats are great for fishing and general recreation in addition to their wicked high speed performance.  The majority of the hull lift comes from aerodynamics which leaves very little of the hull below the water’s surface.   Shallow draft makes them great for getting up the creek or to your favorite scalloping spot. Egress and entry is a breeze over the round sponsons which make them particularly nice for free diving. It’s an all-condition life raft   capable of speeds in excess of 70 MPH.

Getting started with Thundercats

Boat, motor, trailer… what else?

Safety Gear

The hulls are full of air but slamming your face against one after coming off of a wave is never fun.  A full face (motocross type) helmet that is capable of getting completely wet without degradation of the internal padding protects your face from accidental smashing.  Cut proof life jackets are mandatory in racing circuits.

Kill switches save lives.

Tools and Equipment

The hulls come standard with storage compartments that are excellent for storing tools and a rope.  Riders will need both when getting an overturned thundercat back in service.

Quality Materials

A new thundercat hull will typically cost 4 to 6 thousand dollars depending on brand. Be weary of old hulls selling for dirt cheap because gluing seams again and again makes for a bad time.  Modern, welded thundercat hulls take more abuse in their lifetime than predecessors or cheap knock offs.

Fast Motors

Suitable motors go for $500 to $7000 (very used to new) and props cost between $100 to $1000.

Mercury 3 cylinders are great for thundercats since they are common and inexpensive.  Merc 3 Cylinder Wiki

Feed the Beast

Gas tanks designed specifically for thundercats fit snugly along the transom and leave the deck uncluttered.

SENSATIONAL SINGLE-HANDED RACER

Unbelievable small in the pack bags, infinitely large in the sailing pleasure.

Unbelievably small in the pack-bag yet with so much sailing pleasure to offer: The handy sailing boat for solo sailors is a fast and agile fun catamaran that is ready to use in no time: From your camper van onto the water in just 20 to 30 minutes! The NEO is very light and makes it all the easier: The inflatable catamaran can be easily stowed away; it is spectacular – and light – to sail on one hull and easy to set back upright if it capsizes. Ideal for easy sailing, beginners, young people and up to two people on inland waters: Perfect for all those who appreciate lightness.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Small but excellent

The two practical pack-bags for the NEO measure only 185 cm so that they can be easily stowed away in your camper van or car.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Innovative hull

More buoyancy, extra loads, increased safety – and smooth sailing with less spray:

The convex hull bottom reduces resistance at the bow and stern, and the modern Wavepiercer bow cuts through the waves. You will be the fastest sailor on the water! It is has been developed and optimised through tank testing and the boat-skin is hand made from tough Grabner car tyre rubber.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Robust profile frame

Frame with internal profile: The frame doesn’t twist, the hulls don’t bounce off: The profile frame, which is made from saltwater-resistant anodised aluminium, is firmly connected to the hull at the top and at the sides with four sleeve inserts. These angular connectors provide torsional stability, while the trampoline mesh is integrated seamlessly and directly into the profile frame.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Long centreboard, great effect

The deeper the centreboard extends into the water, the better it reduces lateral drift – the centreboard of the HAPPY CAT reaches particularly deep and it can also be infinitely inclined to optimally trim the pressure point to the speed of each course.

The extremely robust and hydrodynamically optimised aluminium centreboard retracts automatically when it touches the ground and can be pulled in completely during landing.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Extremely easy steering

Servo-like steering: The high-speed rudder, which is made from strong aluminium and shifted towards the rear, ensures easy operation and smooth sailing while improving the steering control just like a hydrodynamically optimised blade that extends deep into the water. It releases automatically when it touches the ground.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Easy assembly and dismantling

The practical mast foot joint makes it easy to right and lower the mast, which can be righted by just one person.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Professional profile rig

Angular connectors keep the mast stable. The sail is directly retracted directly and flush into the mast profile to become one unit with the mast which rotates together with it – this results in a professional profile.

Double shrouds and the additional forestay increase safety and ensure that the mast bends in a controlled manner to optimise the sail profile. The mast can be adjusted/left erected independently from the sails.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Wind in the sails

Sailing at high speed: The upper section of the Square Head mainsail is wider, which allows you to sail at high speed even in light wind conditions; the modern shape of the fully battened 6 m² mainsail, which is made from thick Dacron canvas, provides you an ideal profile for any wind condition, and thanks to the sail surface, which has been extended further downwards, the formation of air vortices is reduced to a minimum. Large, reinforced windows provide the skipper with unobstructed all-round visibility.

Foresail advantage: The 3 m² jib reaches up to the mast to allow you to sail with more height using the tow points which are fixed at an ideal position close to the mast; the comfortable continuous jib furler makes handling easy – with no skewer at all.

inflatable catamaran speed boats

Traveller and trim

Before the wind, wind abeam or close to the wind: Depending on the course, the tow point of the mainsheet is moved towards luff or lee using the traveller and the “twist” of the mainsail is reduced.

Flat or bulging sail: To perfectly adjust the mainsheet profile to the wind conditions, the mainsheet is hooked into the clew plate further towards the front or to the rear.

‘Miracle’ Russian survives two months adrift in icy seas on inflatable boat

inflatable catamaran speed boats

MOSCOW - A Russian man survived more than two months drifting in icy seas on an inflatable boat in an ordeal that claimed the lives of his brother and teenaged nephew, officials and reports said.

Mr Mikhail Pichugin may have survived because of his portly 100kg stature, according to his incredulous wife. Media reports said he weighed only 50kg when found on Oct 14.

The man, his brother and a 15-year-old set off for Sakhalin island from the far eastern Khabarovsk region on Aug 9 on an inflatable catamaran, transport prosecutors said.

The boat was discovered at about 10pm on Oct 14 as it floated past a fishing boat in the Sea of Okhotsk, around 1,000km from its starting point and 66 days after it set off.

A video posted by prosecutors shows a bearded man in a life jacket shouting at the fishermen: “I don’t have much strength” but managing to catch a rope.

The survivor was named by RIA Novosti news agency as Mr Mikhail Pichugin. The bodies of his brother Sergei, 49, and nephew, Ilya, 15, were still on the boat.

Rescuers had mounted a helicopter and plane search for the trio a few days after they disappeared, suspecting the boat had been carried by currents towards Kamchatka.

Mr Pichugin’s wife Ms Yekaterina told RIA Novosti: “It’s a kind of miracle.”

She said the men had taken enough food and water to last only two weeks.

She said her husband’s bulk could have saved him, as “he weighed around 100kg”. Russian television reported he lost 50kg.

The fishing boat brought Mr Pichugin to the far eastern city of Magadan, where he was taken off in a stretcher, apparently conscious.

His condition is “more or less stable”, chief doctor of the regional hospital Yury Lednev, told RIA Novosti, saying he was likely to have suffered from hypothermia.

The fishing boat also brought back the bodies and the inflatable boat, which was being examined by investigators.

Criminal probe launched

Transport investigators have launched a probe into possible breaches of safety rules, raising the prospect that Mr Pichugin could face a criminal charge and risk a prison sentence of up to seven years.

The Baza Telegram channel, which is seen as close to law enforcement, cited sources as saying the group had around 20 litres of water and collected rain water and ate dried noodles and peas.

The channel reported that Mr Pichugin told the fishermen his nephew died in early September after which the brothers spent about three weeks together on the boat.

They began to get bedsores from sitting so long and his brother tried to wash himself and fell in the icy water. Mr Pichugin retrieved him but he died soon after, Baza reported.

Mr Pichugin then tied his brother and nephew’s bodies to the boat to prevent them falling into the choppy waves. He hung their life jackets on the side of the boat in a bid to attract attention.

The brothers were from Ulan-Ude in Siberia but Mr Mikhail Pichugin was working in Sakhalin as a driver.

He had invited his brother and nephew to visit and they planned a sea trip to see whales, Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid reported, citing relatives.

An expert questioned by RIA Novosti recalled that in 1960, four Soviet soldiers survived 49 days adrift on a small boat in the Pacific Ocean that was found by the US aircraft carrier Keersarge. AFP
