The Continuing Voyage of Pablo Cruise

One of the more interesting aspects of pop culture is when a musician or band whose songs have not graced the charts in years (sometimes decades), suddenly has an unexpected resurgence. It could be from a song well-placed on a movie, TV, or video game soundtrack. Or a remake. Or some namechecking by/collaboration with a younger artist.
For â70s rockers Pablo Cruise, though, the zeitgeist came in the form of a garment. As in the band T-shirt that Will Ferrellâs lead character wears for a chunk of screen time in the 2008 comedy Stepbrothers . And no one was more pleasantly surprised than the band themselves.
âWe had to sign off on it, but had no idea how much it would be in the movie! And that gave us some great publicity. It got our phones ringing again,â says keyboardist/vocalist Cory Lerios. âThey wanted us to walk the red carpet at the premiere, and I didnât want to. We didnât have anything to talk about! But we did and when reporters asked us what we were doing there, we said âWe have a T-shirt in the movie!ââ
Guitarist/vocalist David Jenkins adds that the band got to play the after-screening premiere party, joined on stage by Ferrell and co-star John C. Reilly. But there was an even bigger benefit for him. âFor six to ten hours, my son thought I was the coolest guy in the planet!â he laughs. âHe was 12 years old, and his dad knew Will Ferrell!â
Today, Pablo Cruise is in the midst of its busiest touring schedule in nearly 20 years. And while part of that is due to the continued appeal of classic rock among fans middle aged and older, Lerios says their audiences are made up increasingly of multiple generations and younger faces.
Will Ferrell: Lovin’ the CruiseScreen Grab from the Columbia Pictures movie “Step Brothers.”
âI always make jokes to some of the audience that theyâre too young to be there!â he laughs. âBut now, we can have a lot of and fun interplay with the audience. Our [original] fans are older and not screaming all the time, so they come to hear the music. We joke with them that we want them to get up, but slowly!â
âItâs interesting and encouraging when parents bring their kids to the show,â Jenkins adds. âAfterward, I love seeing the look in their faces when they realize that people our age can still rock, and they get fired up over classic rock.â
Pablo Cruise first formed in 1973 in San Francisco when some members of the bands Stoneground and Itâs a Wonderful Day joined forces. The original lineup included Lerios, Jenkins, Steve Price (drums), and Bud Cockrell (bass), with Jenkins and Cockrell sharing lead vocals.
The party line is that their name came from the idea that âPabloâ represented a down-to-earth person ,and âCruiseâ a fun and laid back attitude toward life (in a TV interview for the show âThrough the Decades,â Jenkins would admit that, um, there also might have been some LSD involved).
Their self-titled debut came out two years later, but it would be their third record A Place in the Sun and the single âWhatcha Gonna Do?â that launched their career, hitting #6 on the charts. The lyric was inspired by Jenkinsâ troubled romantic relationship at the time, with Lerios asking his bandmate he was going to do when she left him. But despite having âhitâ written all over it, it was not the albumâs first single release.
âI thought it should have been the first single, but it came out after âA Place in the Sun,â because thatâs what the record company wanted. When it did come out and was a big hit, I felt vindicated!â Jenkins says. âAnd the sort of duet part with me and Bud made it something special. I wish I had tapped into that more.â
Cockrell abruptly left the group, replaced by former Santana bassist Bruce Day. The next album, Worlds Away, offered the equally big hit âLove Will Find a Wayâ (also peaking at #6), and equally inspired by the same woman as âWhatcha Gonna Do?â
âIt took me a whole frickinâ year to get over that relationship! But at least I got two great songs out of it!â Jenkins laughs. Other minor hits like âDonât Want to Live Without It,â âI Want You Tonight,â and âCool Loveâ would follow, with more albums and lineup changes, but Pablo Cruise would call it quits in 1986.
Lerios would go on to score a lot of TV shows and movies (including âBaywatchâ), while Jenkins would form country rockers Southern Pacific, work as a sideman to some big names, and occasionally fly the Pablo Cruise flag. That was sometimes with Price, whose âday gigâ was heading a successful e-learning company. Bruce Day passed in 1999.
The original lineup: Cory Lerios, David Jenkins, Bud Cockrell, and Steve Price.A&M/Universal Record Cover
Flash forward to 2004 and the four original members regrouped to play Priceâs wedding. The groom, Jenkins, and Lerios reformed Pablo Cruise the next year. The current lineup also includes Larry Antonio (bass/vocals) and newer addition Robbie Wyckoff, now handling the majority of lead vocals. Cockrell died in 2010.
Still, having 75% of the original lineup together for a band inching toward 50 years is pretty damn good. âWeâve been a three-legged dog for most of the time. If we didnât have that kind of camaraderie, we would be doing this,â Lerios offers.
âWhen we were out on the road and had hit songs on the radio all the time and playing to a young audience, itâs almost surreal to look back on it. If we did anything wrong, itâs we just stopped touring as a band. But our show today is way better because we took that time off. We are really appreciating it now.â
Jenkins adds âHaving Steve and Cory and me together playing the songsâŠthereâs a reason that it works. The songs are one thing, but the lineup is the element that makes it happen.â When asked what one piece of advice the David of today would give his younger version, itâs this.
âI would tell him to dig in deeper to the writing and just do more. And stay focused on that. Donât tire out and donât get lazy. We have a nice body of work, but I wish I had written more songs.â
The music of Pablo Cruise â and in particular their two big singles â are essential components of any Yacht Rock playlist, a throwback genre simply getting more and more popular today.
âWe were a Yacht Rock band before there were Yacht Rock bands! I mean, weâre Pablo Cruise,â Lerios laughs. âAnd so many of our songs were about the islands and the beach and the water. We were always moving in that âescapeâ direction.â
For his part, Jenkins is happy to be lumped in with the same company as Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and his friend Steve Lukather of Toto. Pablo Cruise has even sat in one gig with the Yacht Rock Revue â the countryâs premier Yacht Rock cover band.
âPete [Olson, Revue co-founder] is always telling me where theyâre playing and asking if I want to sit in. And they learn the songs!â Jenkins says. âAnd they sell out shows! But it cracks me up. People show up, wear this silly captainâs hats, and have a good time.â
The current version of Pablo Cruise put out a live CD/DVD package in 2017, and is working on a new song, but expectations are modest. âItâs not like weâre going release the song and radio is going to jump on it and fans are going to buy it. Things donât work like that anymore,â Jenkins says, noting that theyâve also signed to new management.
As for Lerios â whose sons are also songwriters/producers and spearhead the band Fox Wilde â heâs excited that Pablo Cruise is sailing smoothly, and excited about the waters ahead. âThereâs a lot of good energy around us now,â he says. âIf we had the guys in the band then that we do now, we never would have stopped!â

Pablo Cruise is okay with being a 'yacht rock' band
Pablo Cruise doesnât have a problem with the "yacht rock" band. The band has returned with the new single âBreathe.â
Founding member Cory Lerios  says, "It's a nice term, it sort of creates a genre of music. [So many] bands fall into it: Firefall , Orleans , Christopher Cross , of that era. It's not heavy metal, it's not smooth jazz... For us, it's kind of ironic, we're Pablo Cruise, right? We did a lot of sailing, when we were based in Sausalito, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge."
Pablo Cruise was unable to tour this summer because of the pandemic. Lerios looks back saying, "We were out 100 days last year, that was just the greatest time. Lots of full houses.... I sure hope [concerts] come back the way we remembered it."Â
The groupâs 2021 plans for touring are in question at the moment, so theyâve spent their time working on new music.

Yacht or Not?: Sailing the Seas of Yacht Rock
Louis Armstrong said, “If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know.” Duke Ellington said, “There are simply two kinds of music: good music and the other kind.” Christopher Cross said, “If you get caught between the moon and New York City, the best that you can do is fall in love.”
What do these pieces of wisdom add up to? Music, like love, doesn’t follow rules. Musicians as diverse as Armstrong, Ellington and Cross don’t want to be boxed in by genre. They want to write, record and perform and not spend time deciding if they play bebop or hard bop, blues or Southern rock, funk or disco.
But as temperatures heat up and people think of sailing away to find serenity, yacht rock playlists start to float in on the breeze. And that means drawing boundaries with enough latitude that artists don’t object to being boxed in and still foster playlists with a sense of meaning, a sense of continuity and depth. Peaks and valleys must be smartly balanced against the total annihilation of a common aesthetic. (Yes, despite a fascination with sailing and pina coladas, yacht rock can be taken seriously!)
And so, much to Armstrong’s chagrin, we have to ask, “What is yacht rock?” If it seems obvious, take a look at Spotify’s recent “Yacht Rock” playlist . Spotify is a global streaming leader with some 350 million monthly users, an army of music experts and cutting edge artificial intelligence, and yet the company filled its playlist with songs such as Tears for Fears ’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me,” Van Morrison ’s “Brown Eyed Girl” and Bruce Hornsby ’s “The Way It Is.”
If somebody wants to create and enjoy a stack of songs that runs from tunes by the J. Geils Band , to the Police , to Bad Company , to Talking Heads (yup, the company has all these artists on its playlist and even included Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters”), they should do that with gusto! It sounds like an evening full of classic jams and fun left turns so cheers to the endeavor. But if a major player in the music business wants to do that and call it yacht rock, we need to take a step back and consider what is and isn’t yacht.
We know breezes, islands, keys, capes, cool nights, crazy love and reminiscing help define the yacht aesthetic (see works by Seals & Crofts , Jay Fergeson, Bertie Higgins, Rupert Holmes, Paul Davis, Poco , and Little River Band ). But let’s get beyond the captain’s caps and map the waters of this perfect-for-summer style.

Yacht Rock Sets Sail With Help From a 2005 Web Series
Before 2005, people generally placed Toto ’s “ Africa ” and Holmes’ “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” in the soft rock genre. Maybe if they were getting fancy, they’d call them AM Gold. But in 2005, the online video series Yacht Rock debuted. It fictionalized the careers of soft rock artists of the late ’70s and early ’80s. The cheeky show capitalized on the building renaissance of artists such as Steely Dan and Michael McDonald , who embraced the silliness of the series.
“When it came on I remember watching it pretty avidly,” McDonald admitted in 2018 . “My kids got a huge kick out of it. We would laugh about the characterizations of the people involved. At this point it’s a genre of its own. You’re either yacht or you're not.”
He might be right that you’re either yacht or you’re not. But calling it a genre doesn’t quite work (more on that in a minute).
Listen to the Doobie Brothers' 'Minute By Minute'
Riding the Waters From the Radical ’60s to the Sincere ’70s
By the late ’60s, rock ‘n’ roll had become “art.” The Beatles started as simple teen heartthrobs covering early rock ‘n’ roll, but graduated to the supreme weirdness of the White Album . Chuck Berry gave birth to the Rolling Stones who gave birth to Led Zeppelin and the gonzo bombast of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.” And all sorts of acts went wild from the Grateful Dead , to Pink Floyd , to Frank Zappa and beyond. The sunshine of ’70s AM Gold came as a reaction to these wonderful excesses. Singer-songwriters aimed to take rock and pop back to the simple pleasures of tight, light tunes such as Beach Boys ’ classics, Motown hits and Brill Building-crafted songs.
Hippies looking for revolution and Gen X-ers on the hunt for rage, irony and sharp edges bristled at the genuine lyrics of tenderness and heartbreak neatly packaged in finely-crafted Top 40. Where the stars and fans of '60s and ’90s rock wanted arty and experimental music, anger and angst, yacht took listeners on a voyage powered by pure earnestness: think of the sincere and intense conviction of Dave Mason’s “We Just Disagree,” Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together," and “Love is the Answer” by England Dan & John Ford Coley.
(Which is why placing the Police or Talking Heads on any yacht mix doesn’t work.)
Yacht rock embodies the final charge of unbridled, heartfelt pop.
“I think these songs remain so popular because they are unabashedly pop,” Nicholas Niespodziani, leader of the hugely successful tribute band Yacht Rock Revue , explains to UCR. “They’re not self conscious. You couldn’t write a song like ‘Africa’ now. What are they even singing about? Who knows? But it’s fun to sing.”
Watch Captain & Tennille's Video for 'Love Will Keep Us Together'
Music That’s Jazzy, But Sure Isn’t Jazz
Yacht rock doesn’t just have an earnestness to its lyrics, the sax solos come with the same level of sincerity.
If the style was the last gasp of unadulterated pop, it was also the dying breath of jazz’s influence on rock. Jazz rock started in the ’60s with Zappa, Chicago , Santana and Blood, Sweat & Tears , but slowly simple drums and growling guitars stomped horn lines and rhythmic shifts into the ground. However, yacht rock features echoes of swingin’ saxophones, big band horns and Miles Davis ’ fusion projects.
Yacht rock is very pop, but legitimate musical talents made those hooks. Chuck Mangione logged time in jazz giant Art Blakey’s band then took what he learned and crushed complex harmonic ideas into the pop nugget “Feels So Good,” which is basically a Latin-bebop-disco-classical suite. (If you dig “Feels So Good,” dig deeper and groove to smooth jazz mini-symphony “Give It All You Got.”)
Nearly every classic from the style features either an epic sax solo or dazzling guitar part. For horn glory, go spin Little River Band’s “Reminiscing,” Gino Vannelli’s “I Just Wanna Stop” or Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers ’ “Just the Two of Us." For six-string wizardry as astounding as anything Jimmy Page came up with (and much more economical), try Atlantic Rhythm Section’s “So Into You,” Pablo Cruise’s “Love Will Find a Way” and pretty much every Steely Dan cut.
(Which is why placing Tears for Fears’ “ Everybody Wants to Rule the World ” and Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” on any yacht mix doesn’t work).
Watch the Little River Band's Video for 'Reminiscing'
A Vibe, Not a Genre or Gender or Demographic of Any Kind
Being a style, a feeling, an aesthetic, a vibe means that yacht rock can pull a song from a wide variety of genres into its orbit. It also means that it’s not just a catalog of hits from bearded white dudes. Yes, Kenny Loggins , McDonald and both Seals and Crofts helped define yacht rock. But quintessential songs from the style came from the women and artists of color, soul singers, folk heroes and Nashville aces.
For every Loggins' tune in a captain’s hat, there’s a Carly Simon track dressed up as your cruise director. Yes, there's Steely Dan's jazz influence, but also Crosby, Stills & Nash 's folk legacy (“Southern Cross” remains definitively of the style). Yacht rock playlists should also be littered with appropriate R&B gems, such as the Raydio’s “You Can’t Change That” (which features Ray Parker Jr.!), Hall & Oates ’ “Sara Smile” and Kool & the Gang’s “Too Hot.” Likewise, country acts of the era tried to go Top 40 while attempting to retain some twang and managed to make Love Boat music (see Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning,” Eddie Rabbit’s “I Love a Rainy Night,” Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers ’ “Islands in the Stream”).
It’s hard to tell if the Commodores’ “Sail On” is pop or R&B, harder still to know if George Benson’s “Give Me the Night” is pop, R&B or jazz. But they both feel yacht.
(Which is why Santana can do psychedelic Latin music and can do yacht on “Hold On,” and why the Pointer Sisters can do new wave disco with “Neutron Dance” and yacht with “Slow Hand.")
Wishing You a Bon Voyage on the Seas of Yacht
Spotify was right to think about diversity when making its playlist, though the company got the type of diversity wrong. Yacht has some pretty specific sonic parameters, but has no demographic restrictions when it comes to the kind of artists contributing to the style’s catalog. That means when you hit the high seas of yacht, you don’t need to be afraid to fight for your favorites to be included, just please don’t have one of those favorites be “Ghostbusters.”
We began talking about drawing boundaries with enough latitude that artists don’t object to being boxed in. The wide latitude yacht rock affords matters because music comes to define eras and outlines cultural trends (remember that yacht came in reaction to art rock and that says a lot about the swing from the late '60s to the early '80s). Calling Christopher Cross soft rock might feel right, but it doesn't tell us much about where he was coming from and what he was trying to accomplish. Calling Cross yacht rock, now that we know it's not a pejorative, illuminates his aesthetic.
Cross came out of the Texas rock scene that produced blues aces the Vaughan Brothers and guitar shredder Eric Johnson (who plays on a lot of his albums). He loves Joni Mitchell and that shows in his craft. He's jazzy but not jazz (see those horns and guitar on "Ride Like the Wind") with a vibe that's completely yacht -- developed from the scene that took '60s pop, updated it and sheltered it from the trends of punk, metal, new wave and hip hop. The same can be said for Loggins, McDonald, Simon, Lionel Ritchie and so many others.
Spotify needs to tweak its algorithm so it gets this right. Or, better yet, connect with the genre-crossing vibe that makes yacht so unique.

In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band, David Jenkins (guitars, vocals), Cory Lerios(keyboards, vocals), Bud Cockerel (bass, vocals) and Steve Price (drums, percussion) were no where in sight. At that point there was a bit of a mystique surrounding Pablo Cruise and when asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this: “Pablo”, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual, and “Cruise” depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life: In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest, real down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun yet elegant, infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event!
From 1975 to 1985 the band toured the United States, Canada and Japan extensively, welcoming fans to “Climb Aboard The Good Ship Pablo Cruise.” Reaching the top 10 with mega hits like “Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye?” and “Love Will Find A Way,”and several other top 20’s, the band went on to sell several million albums and singles collectively and established themselves as well respected writers and performers within the industry. They appeared on numerous TV shows, including Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Hour and in 1979 they broke Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, becoming the first rock band to play a casino showroom. They also became the first rock band to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1985 after completing several national tours and releasing 7 studio albums in all, the band decided to take a hiatus……one that lasted nearly 20 years.
Fast forward 20 years…. In 2005 a reunited Pablo Cruise picked up where they left off and today the band performs all over the U.S. and Canada and they’re enjoying it more than ever… Since getting back together, they have released two live CD’s and a DVD all through Sony Music documenting their exceptional live shows. During the Pandemic the boys wrote and produced a new single (through Sony) entitled “Breathe” which received considerable critical reviews! One of the great things about playing shows after all these years, is that primary songwriters David Jenkins and Cory Lerios are still on board! “Cory says, going out and playing shows these days, gives us the opportunity to not only pay tribute to our timeless repertoire, it also gives us a chance to see old friends and fans from back in the day, as well as gaining a whole new audience!” Today Pablo Cruise is bringing more energy and excitement to the stage than ever before and with the addition of Larry Antonino (bass, vocals), Robbie Wyckoff (vocals, percussion) and Sergio Gonzalez (drums, percussion) the band has never sounded better! If you get an opportunity to see Pablo Cruise live, don’t pass it up……IT’S GOOD TO BE LIVE! www.pablocruise.com
Founding Members
DAVID JENKINS (guitar, vocals)
Throughout the late 80’s, original lead vocalist David Jenkins continued touring and garnered acclaim in world of country music with the slightly ahead of their time country-rock band Southern Pacific. As they racked up hits like “Midnight Highway,” the chart topper “New Shade of Blue” and “Honey I Dare You” (co-written by Jenkins) the band toured all over the U.S. In 1992 Dave connected with Hawaii’s native son Kapono Beamer, and in ’95 the duo released the album “Cruisin’ on Hawaiian Time,” that became a critics favorite as well as being nominated for Hawaii’s prestigious Hoku Award for “Album Of The Year”. Dave has recorded with many music industry greats such as: Micky Hart, Buddy Miles, The Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis, The Doobie Bros. to name just a few!….Since ’99 Jenkins has joined forces with the composite group, Rock & Pop Masters, that includes some of the
great singers of the ’70’s and ’80’s. In May of 2011, Dave traveled to Iraq to perform for the troops with Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Bill Champlin (Chicago)… The troops were thrilled to have them even though the band barely escaped being blown off the stage…. for real!!! (Dave’s credits) http://jaimekylemusic.com/www.Jaimekylemusic.com/Dave_Jenkins.html
CORY LERIOS (keys, vocals)
Pianist, vocalist Cory Lerios decided to turn his writing and producing skills to Film and Television. In 1986 he landed his first scoring opportunity when he was asked to write the music for the now “cult classic” “One Crazy Summer” starring Demi Moore and John Cusack. In 1987 Lerios landed his first network series, scoring ABC’s critically acclaimed “Max Headroom.” ABC’s “O’Hara and “Police Story” immediately followed. Writing to “picture” became Cory’s new found passion and in 1989 Cory partnered with long time friend and composer John D’Andrea. Together they formed Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks and aside from scoring 300 episodes of “Baywatch,” they garnered several Emmy Nominations and won the coveted award for “Music Direction for soap “Days Of Our Lives.” Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks went on to produce countless hours of TV scores and themes including “Diagnosis Murder,” “Flipper,” and “Marshall Law.” In 2005 Lerios and D’Andrea parted ways and Cory has continued to write themes and underscore for several shows including Disney’s “Kim Possible,” Universal’s “Land Before Time.” In 2015 Cory released an EP under his pseudonym, “Cory Charles” corycharles.com entitled “If I Could Change Anything, It Would Be You.” (Cory’s credits)

SERGIO GONZALEZ (drums, percussion) Veteran Drummer, Sergio Gonzalez has played, recorded and performed live with many top artists including Jennifer Lopez, Queen Larifah, Steve Martin, Gavin Degraw, Don Was, Jessie J and Keb Mo. Simply said, Sergio likes to hit things. A professional "hit man" if you will, but he hits them in such and extraordinary way, that it has allowed him to perform all over the world, twice over. He has performed privately for the Queen of England and the Sultan of Brunei. After high school he was invited to play with a traveling gospel group and traveled around the world for three years. His highlight was playing in Bethlehem, Israel on Christmas Eve. Soon after that he auditioned for the main show Band at Walt Disney World in Florida, working there for three years, then transferring over to Disneyland, California for three more years. It was there where he started meeting and playing with some very talented and special friends whom he is very grateful to have in his life. Sergio's has a vast range of experience from World music, Jazz, R&B, Rock and Latin meld together to create his unique and personal style and groove. Sergio continues to make his mark in the music industry currently performing with the band Pablo Cruise. (Sergio's credits) www.sergiodrums.com

Graded on a Curve: Pablo Cruise, Twentieth Century Masters: Millennium Collection: The Best of Pablo Cruise
Frank Sinatra once called rock ‘n’ roll “the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear.” He was, Iâm reasonably certain, referring to Pablo Cruise, the âSex Pistols of Yacht Rock.â I actually own a Pablo Cruise t-shirt, bought it because I wanted people to think Iâm vicious and depraved. And it works. Pedestrians tend to cross the street to avoid me. Theyâre afraid I may bite. Or scarier yet, force them to listen to âLove Will Find a Way.â
For the longest time I assumed Pablo Cruise took their name from an obscure Mexican revolutionary leader. This is not the case. Others assumed there was a guy named Pablo Cruise in the band. This is also not the case. When asked âWhoâs Pablo Cruise?â the quartet said simply, âHeâs the guy in the middle.â I like a band with a sense of humor and I like Pablo Cruise (in a very small measure) and I am not ashamed.
I bought the t-shirt as a joke but I wear it with pride because despite their soft rock proclivities Pablo Cruise had soul. They did not have much soul, mind you, but they did their best. They also did their best to produce an âexciting sound.â As a result they are a surprisingly interesting Yacht Rock band. They were always attempting to transcend the mellow, to rise above the smooth. It was a quixotic endeavor, to be sure, and they failed for more than they succeeded. But I credit them for trying.
Robert Christgau of Village Voice fame wrote of Pablo Cruiseâs 1975 breakthrough album Lifeline , âYou can take the Doobie Brothers out of the country, but you can’t turn them into Three Dog Night.â I havenât the slightest idea what this means, but Iâm pretty sure itâs an insult. Insulting Pablo Cruise is a popular pastime. Everybody I know does it because everybody I know hates Pablo Cruise with a passion. I would call Pablo Cruise âthe whipping boys of the worldâ but every single band or artist to haunt the musical marinas of our fair land during the seventies could lay claim to the honor. God help Christopher Cross, but that bastard put out a hellish good debut LP.
But if Pablo Cruise get no respect, thatâs not to say they donât deserve a smallish modicum of the commodity. When I hear one of their âhits,â all of which can be found on 2001’s Twentieth Century Masters: Millennium Collection: The Best of Pablo Cruise , on the car radio, I donât switch the station. I crank up the volume. Partly, Iâll admit, because their songs and what the band represents amuse me, but also because they have something to offer. Defining what that something is can be difficult. But I think it goes back to what I said earlier. Pablo Cruise tried their damndest to be something other than bland. They were quintessential middle-of-the-roaders but they aspired to more. And occasionally, by God, in their quintessentially middle-of-the-road way, they succeeded.
They were also surprisingly eclectic. The Pablo Cruise sound was a melting pot of faux soul, power pop, standard issue Yacht Rock, funk, fusion, Latin music, and New Wave even. On the much-derided-by-the-music-hipsterati soft rock radio staple âLove Will Find a Wayâ the âCroozâ start things off with a cool guitar riff, then in comes David Jenkins like a low-rent Boz Scaggs. Robert Christgau wrote âHear David Jenkins sing ‘once you get past the pain’ fifty times in a day and the pain will be permanent,” but heâs being too hard on the guy. And the song itself, while hardly earth-shattering, is a frothy piece of low-aspirations songcraft.
The same can be said for âWhatcha Gonna Do,â on which the band raise the temperature a few degrees and Jenkins aims at the blue-eyed soulful with more gusto than people give him credit for. The song has a (dare I say it) funky beat, the vocal harmonies are silky fine, and thereâs even a muscular guitar solo. And thereâs no denying the song sticks in your head, to the extent that youâll have to listen to âIron Manâ a few times to drive it out. Of course youâll then have to listen to something to get âIron Manâ out of your head. And you can see where Iâm going with this. Things could get ugly.
The very sunny âA Place in the Sunâ (perfect Yacht Rock song title!) opens with some blindingly bright synthesizer gratis Cory Lerios, Jenkins plays some sharp-edged guitar (including an extended solo), and bassist Bud Cockrell pitches in with some big pipes. No laid back here. This is play-that-funky-music-white-boy stuff, and while the funk is hardly world class (theyâre from San Francisco, what do you expect?) itâs more than ersatz okay.
And if anything âDonât Want to Live Without Itâ is even funkierâit has this big disco dance beat and an even bigger bass line and Jenkinsâ vocals are powerful indeed. You get lots of vocal harmonies too, and yet another Jenkins guitar solo. The guyâs no Hendrix but heâs as close as the harbor rat pack ever came to a Hendrix, and his penchant for cutting loose definitely distinguished Pablo Cruise from their more placid Yacht Rock contemporaries.
The vaguely tropical âIsland Womanâ is archetypal Yacht Rockâisnât the whole point of owning a pleasure cruiser finding yourself an exotic woman who will make your life a tropical paradise? Except that on this one Jenkins finds himself somewhere betwixt heaven and hell because this particular island woman is a handful. I love the lyricsâBernie Taupin-worthy lines like âEvery night she would come to me/But her demands brought disharmony/I said, “You can’t bring your drums to bed/Your rhythm method’s gonna leave me dead” abound, and that âchurlishâ in âIt would be churlish of me to complain/But caviar every night is insaneâ demonstrates the band owned both a thesaurus and a sense of humor.
But South of the Border speaking âIsland Womanâ doesnât stand a chance next to âI Go to Rio,â which bears a more than passing resemblance to Barry Manilowâs “Copacabana.” You get the same tropical dance beat perfect for doing the âsamba or la bamba,â although the latter is a Mexican dance and Iâm not itâs even sure itâs legal in Brazil. âI Go to Rioâ is, of course, a cover of the flamboyant Peter Allenâs campy signature song, and Pablo Cruise have fun with it. It features a long instrumental break complete with handclaps, a whistle, and lots of hooting and hollering, and it opens with a gagâa phone rings, producer Bill Schnee picks up, and someone who sounds like theyâre gargling Caipirinha says, âHello, Bill. This is Pablo… I won’t be able to make it today because I’m at the bottom of the pool.â Which finally answers the question âWhoâs Pablo Cruise?â Heâs the member of the band who pulled a Brian Jones.
The title of the largely instrumental (you gets some guttural nonsense by Jenkins here and there) âZero to Sixty in Fiveâ makes you think youâre about to do some cigarette boat racing, and you are, but only after youâve been âtreatedâ to some show-offy piano complete with annoying frills by Lerios. After that you get the pleasure craft setâs idea of kickinâ out the jams, motherfucker, and it isnât pretty. The song has zip, and Jenkins does some bona fide jams-kicking on guitar, but thereâs no escaping the vaguely disco-fied and eminently cheesy strings and horn arrangement. Not cool, boys. Not cool. âAtlanta Juneâ is a really laid-back sorta pop soul number on which Jenkins comes on like Marvin Gaye only to trip on his own lily-white tonsils. The melody is more than serviceable, and the keyboard work is nice, but what you end up with sounds like Little Feat if Little Feat had been wimps.
âI Want You Tonightâ is a generic soft rocker that the boys undoubtedly considered a hard rocker. When Jenkins sings âI feel like getting crazyâ you can tell he thinks he is, but his idea of crazy is wearing a more than ordinarily garish Hawaiian shirt. Or maybe no shirt at all! The backing vocals, as always, are oily slick, but when it comes to oily slick thereâs no beating the impossibly earnest âCool Love.â Jenkins pours so much ersatz passion into his vocals youâll want to gag, and the piano follows suit, but the chorus, which has the guys singing âItâs a cool kind of loveâ is wine cooler chill, and Jenkins guitar solo is something to hear.
âWill You, Wonât Youâ is interesting, opens with some nice Byrdsy guitar interplay, then you get some tacky lyrics (âyou take me to the point of no return,â gak) followed by some muscular vocalizing and, surprise of surprises, a treasure of a power pop chorus that never fails to brighten my day. This is Nuevo Wavo served up dockside by journeymen I didnât think had it in them.
Closer âOcean Breezeâ is a flashy jazz piano showcase that quickly degenerates into pure hokum. Itâs bad, and things get badder yet when the strings come in. After that things slow down and speed up and the guitar and drums come in and fall out again and itâs really maddening, and just when you think things canât possibly get worse Jenkins appears from a cloud of sulphur like a lounge singer from hell and delivers the most cloyingly romantic vocal performance this side of Morris Albertâs âFeelings.â You want to punch the guy, you really do. This is truly the dark underbelly of Yacht Rock, stinks like dead fish in an oil slick. And its inclusion at the end is almost enough to make you think that the people who put the compilation together wanted to leave you hating the band.
There are pleasures to be found on this best-of. Not undeniable pleasures, that would be pushing it, but if youâre not above doing some slumming at the âwilderâ end of the yacht dock and arenât too proud to love schlock you could do much, much worse. If I was to be cruel Iâd say they aspired to be Toto and failed. If I was to be kind Iâd say they aspired to rise above their station and succeeded. I choose, and this isnât the norm for me, to be kind. I have a soft spot for these guys. To paraphrase Neil Young, they tried to do their best but they could not. But theirs was a passionate mediocrity, and passion should always count for something in this world.

Pablo Cruise
They also became the first rock band to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1985 after completing several national tours and releasing 7 studio albums in all, the band decided to take a hiatus......one that lasted nearly 20 years.
Fast forward 20 years .....In 2005 a reunited Pablo Cruise picked up where they left off and today the band performs all over the U.S. and Canada and they’re enjoying it more than ever....Since getting back together, they have released two live CD’s and a DVD all through Sony Music documenting their exceptional live shows. “One of the great things about playing shows after all these years is that the core band, David, Steve and myself are still here and lovin’ it, says Cory! Going out and playing shows these days gives us the opportunity to not only pay tribute to our timeless repertoire, it gives us a chance to see old friends and fans from back in the day as well as gaining a whole new audience!” Today Pablo Cruise is bringing more energy and excitement to the stage than ever before and with the addition of Larry Antonino and Robbie Wyckoff, the band has never sounded better..... If you get an opportunity to see Pablo Cruise live, don’t pass it up...... ” IT’S GOOD TO BE LIVE ” www.pablocruise.com
Dave has recorded with many music industry greats such as: Micky Hart, Buddy Miles, The Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis, Emmylou Harris, The Doobie Bros. to name just a few!....Since ’99 Jenkins has joined forces with the composite group, Rock & Pop Masters, that includes some of the great singers of the ’70’s and ’80’s. In May of 2011, Dave traveled to Iraq to perform for the troops with Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Bill Champlin (Chicago)... The troops were thrilled to have them even though the band barely escaped being blown off the stage....
Together they formed Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks and aside from scoring 300 episodes of “Baywatch,” they garnered several Emmy Nominations and won the coveted award for “Music Direction for soap “Days Of Our Lives.” Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks went on to produce countless hours of TV scores and themes including “Diagnosis Murder,” “Flipper,” and “Marshall Law.” In 2005 Lerios and D’Andrea parted ways and Cory has continued to write themes and underscore for several shows including Disney’s “Kim Possible,” Universal’s “Land Before Time.” In 2015 Cory released an EP under his pseudonym, “Cory Charles” www.corycharles.com entitled “If I Could Change Anything, It Would Be You.” (Cory’s credits) www.corylerios.com

SERGIO GONZALEZ (drums, percussion)
Veteran Drummer, Sergio Gonzalez has played, recorded and performed live with many top artists including Jennifer Lopez, Queen Larifah, Steve Martin, Gavin Degraw, Don Was, Jessie J and Keb Mo. English Personal Statement
George Eliotâs metaphor for imagination- âinward light which is the last refinement of Energy ⊠bathing even the ethereal atoms in its ideally illuminated spaceâ- is beautiful. The powerful image supported by the underlying liquid consonants skilfully leads to the action it describes, but it is also the suggestion of particle physics and mass-energy equivalence that interests me about this quotation. In this way, I have gained more from reading âMiddlemarchâ as I appreciate Eliotâs constant links between science and fiction, and I believe scientific study has generally sharpened my abilities of analysis and concise expression.
I have loved working as a steward at the Globe Theatre; I had the opportunity to see many plays, including a production of Marloweâs âDr Faustusâ. I read Danteâs âInfernoâ and several books of Miltonâs âParadise Lostâ for a different portrayal of hell and sin to that depicted in âDr Faustusâ. I found the torment and suffering described by Dante graphic, whilst the first person narrative drew me closer to the pathos fear and disgust expressed. Miltonâs depiction of a mental state is much more powerful in my opinion, and has interesting parallels to Faustusâ state of damnation. I also saw Shakespeareâs âAs You Like Itâ, âAllâs Well that Ends Wellâ and âMuch Ado About Nothingâ whilst stewarding. âMuch Ado About Nothingâ reminded me of the surprising similarity between Shakespeareâs comedies and tragedies. Claudio and Heroâs troubled love and Don Johnâs self-proclaimed villainy seem to mirror the actions of Othello, Desdemona and Iago. Viewing comedy as a structure, âMuch Adoâ contains the potential tragedy of âOthelloâ, but an added last act resolves all tensions and ends so happily and neatly that it seems to me rather unrealistic.
I enjoyed Dickensâ âOur Mutual Friendâ for its satirical portrayal of superficial London society. His depiction of characters and scenes make the novel humorous and therefore very different to âA Tale of Two Citiesâ. Here, the powerful characterisation emphasises the terrible human suffering and moral corruption, for example his effective personification of âLa Vengeanceâ, who encourages the cries of bloodlust from Parisians. I found it easier to empathise with Jude in Hardyâs âJude the Obscureâ than with Dickensâ creations however, since his actions appear futile against the fate which continually works against him. There seems to be no hope in the novel, unlike the eventual triumph of love over death in âA Tale of Two Citiesâ. Just as in âTess of the dâUrbervillesâ and âA Pair of Blue Eyesâ, love and happiness seem only like a prelude to grief and sorrow linked with the relentless passing of time. I find Donneâs approaches to this theme interesting too: in both his love poems and the Holy Sonnets, Donne uses form to counter and control the passing of time and the prospect of change.
I have participated in many music groups and ensembles at school, having achieved Grade 8 with distinction in both Flute and French Horn. I have worked for two years in my local Cancer Research shop as part of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, and also spent a residential week with a charity called Activenture, looking after children of different ages and abilities, for which I received the Young Carer of the Year award. During my gap year, I plan to join my local orchestra and travel for three months around South America, but ultimately I am most excited about the time I will have to read and further explore English literature.

The candidateâs wide range of personal interests are clearly demonstrated, and â for the most part â are well-linked to their subject application, giving it further strength. They are able to use independent thought to illustrate how various bits of reading they have done are linked. The list of works they discuss ranges from poetry to plays to Victorian novels; a strong variety of works. They evaluate these across genres and are able to apply critical thought and analysis to them. Throughout their discussions of various texts, the applicant clearly illustrates their enthusiasm for the subject; their writing is energised by positivity and personal engagement with the material.
Bad Points Of The Personal Statement
The candidate could have worked even harder to connect their extra-curricular activities to their application (though their relevance was clear in most instances). The effect of the applicantâs use of independent thought and personal experience was often slightly dulled by their use of highly personal and personalising terms such as âbeautifulâ, or simply âI enjoyedâ. Though there is perhaps nothing wrong with these evaluations as an initial starting point, the candidate could have pushed further with their readings to interrogate these works further. Though the applicant demonstrates a wide literary foundation, their commentary did at times lapse into plot summary, which is less interesting than their own thought.
UniAdmissions Overall Score:
This candidateâs application reads as both impressive in its depth of knowledge and personal in its illustration of thought and enthusiasm. As such, it reads as a statement that is well-balanced and well-judged; the reader is able to get a good sense of this applicantâs interests on both a personal and academic level. The statement could have made greater use of critical language and could have included fewer instances of value judgments; small alterations which would have given the candidateâs discussions greater academic depth.
This Personal Statement for English is a great example of a statement done right. The candidate’s interest is clearly shown which is vital to Admissions Tutors.

How to Write an English Personal Statement Worthy of Oxbridge!
Are you dreaming of pursuing English at Oxford, Cambridge or a top Russell Group University? This comprehensive guide equips you with top tips for crafting an English personal statement that truly stands out. Learn how to showcase your diverse literary interests, structure your personal statement or tailor your statement for Oxbridge. To bring these concepts to life, we provide an example Oxbridge English personal statement for your reference.
When applying to university, your personal statement is your best opportunity to showcase what motivates you to study the subject you are applying for and why you are suited to study it. You can do this by providing evidence of your interest: how have you gone beyond the curriculum to satisfy questions which reach past the subject at A Level?
Interviewers for English at university will be looking for students who have an insatiable curiosity for learning and developed interests in various areas of the subject. They will also be looking for candidates who have the analytical skills and academic rigour required for success at university. And, of course, youâll be expected to demonstrate evidence of substantial reading; a successful English personal statement will provide a starting point for an interview discussion, so gesture towards a range of different texts which you are prepared to discuss at length. Donât shy away from making a provocative statement, as long as you are prepared to support any claim you make: independent, fresh responses to texts will generate a positive response.
Tips for your English Literature Personal Statement
The key tips to bear in mind when writing a personal statement are: be truthful, be ambitious and donât undersell yourself. This is an opportunity to show off what youâre good at! Donât hold back from writing about times when you have excelled (for example, winning an English essay competition) but donât distort what youâve done either.
Donât mention books which you havenât read all the way through . If you feel like your breadth of reading might be lacking, itâs a good idea to do some extension reading in the months leading up to applying for university, so that when it comes to writing your personal statement, youâll have a wide variety of texts to choose from.
Showcase your literary diversity : Make your personal statement stand out by referencing a range of text forms, from classic novels to contemporary poetry, thought-provoking essays, iconic plays, and compelling prose. This demonstrates your passion for English literature across different mediums and eras.
Embrace the breadth of English literature: Convey your enthusiasm for the subject by including references to works from various eras. Showcase your appreciation for not only contemporary literature but also texts from older periods, like the Medieval age, the Renaissance, and beyond (whilst staying true to your interests). This illustrates your readiness to explore and engage with the rich tapestry of English literature throughout history. This is particularly important when applying for a course like Oxford English Language Literature as the course modules are chronological, spanning Old English (e.g. Beowulf) through to contemporary texts. An admissions tutor is likely to be impressed if you therefore have some appreciation for a range of literary eras.
Craft a narrative with a few (e.g. 3) focused areas of interest: Instead of providing a superficial overview of various topics that interest you, choose say three specific areas of English literature that genuinely intrigue you. These could be thematic, like postcolonial literature, feminist literature, or gothic literature. For each area, go in-depth by referencing a key book or text you've read, a relevant piece of literary criticism (this isnât required, but can be good to include!), and your thoughtful analysis of the text or critic's perspective. Then, connect these three areas to create a compelling narrative thread that showcases your passion, analytical skills, and the trajectory of your literary exploration. This approach not only demonstrates your commitment but also provides a captivating structure for your personal statement (See the English personal statement posted below as an example of this!)
How to Structure Your English Personal Statement
The word count for personal statements is quite limited, so itâs important to use every sentence effectively. Donât repeat yourself and donât include information which isnât relevant to your application. When applying for English, there are certain areas which should be addressed in your personal statement, so here is a guideline of how one might structure the personal statement to ensure that all of these areas are mentioned.
Introductory paragraph:
What is your motivation to study English? Be specific: what do you want to explore at university? What is distinctive about studying literature that makes it worthwhile? Ensure you talk about what motivates your study of the subject now, not a catalyst from your childhood as, even if it may be true, the interviewer will find it clichéd and less relevant.
Main body of the personal statement:
Devote at least a paragraph to talking about specific areas of interest within the subject. What excites you most? For example, do you have a particular fascination with performance studies or postcolonial theory? Indicate that you have opinions and preoccupations within the discipline.
Mention a range of texts which have interested you: ensure that youâve mentioned at least one play, prose text and piece of poetry (ideally). Itâs also a good idea to show that youâve engaged with secondary texts, for example a work of literary criticism or a book covering the historical background of a period of literature youâve studied.
Show that you have an active interest in the subject: Have you sought out performances of plays, special lectures or essay competitions? These will all reveal that youâve gone out of your way to immerse yourself in your subject already, and this is a very appealing trait in a prospective university candidate.
Showcase your skills: Donât just name-drop texts but say something incisive and persuasive about them. This could involve discussing what links together works by authors of the same period or what defines the work of a single author. Demonstrate your ability to analyse texts effectively, because this is the most important skill which you will use studying English at university level.
Concluding your personal statement:
The personal statement isnât long enough to talk at length about extracurricular hobbies and activities, so donât let these take up too much space (a few lines maximum). However, it is a good idea to mention what you do outside your subject to present yourself as a well-rounded candidate. Therefore:
You could mention one or two of your other A Level subjects, perhaps describing how they have enhanced your study of English. This will be particularly convincing if you have studied History or a foreign language at A Level.
Mention any extracurricular activities which make you stand out. Do you play a musical instrument, and if so, to what level? If youâre involved in sport, do you play in a team? Donât write at length about this: try to contain this information within one sentence.
Mention any prizes or roles of responsibility which you have had at school, including any clubs that you might organise, such as the school newspaper or student council.
Conclude your personal statement by returning to your aptitude for studying the subject . Which core skills do you possess which will equip you to excel at degree level? Itâs important to strike a balance between enthusiasm for the subject and evidence of skills.
Applying to Oxford or Cambridge (Oxbridge)? Here's What You Should Also Do
Difference Between Oxford English Language and Literature BA & Cambridge English BA
The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, collectively referred to as Oxbridge, are globally renowned for their exceptional academic courses. In the domain of English studies, both universities offer distinct programmes: Oxford's English Language and Literature and Cambridge's English course. In this section, we will precisely explore the key differences between these programmes, highlighting their unique approaches and focus, to ensure you cater your Oxbridge English personal statement to your Number 1 choice of university.
Writing an Oxford English Language and Literature Personal Statement
Oxford's English Language and Literature course is renowned for its extensive scope, offering a comprehensive exploration of English writing from its origins in Anglo-Saxon England to contemporary works. It provides the unique opportunity to examine literature in English on a global scale, encompassing texts from various parts of the world and originally penned in different languages. The course allows students to tailor their studies to match their interests through core papers, dissertation topics, and special options. Some past options include delving into Literature and revolution, Postcolonial literature, Writing lives, Old Norse, Tragedy, and Film criticism, fostering a dynamic and diverse learning experience.
At the University of Oxford, the course titled "English Language and Literature" is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both the language and literary aspects of the English discipline . It is therefore important that you ideally reference both aspects in your Oxford English personal statement. Even if the other courses you are applying for do not have the Language element, anything you include will still be relevant to the study of Literature (you can entwine the two).
1. Integration of Language and Literature:
Oxford's course integrates the study of the English language with a deep exploration of literary works. Students examine the language's structure, history, and linguistic components while also engaging with a wide array of literary genres and periods.
2. Language Analysis and Literary Critique:
The curriculum at Oxford hones students skills in language analysis, gives them exposure to linguistic theories, and literary critique. Students learn to analyse the nuances of language and its application in literature, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
3. Historical and Cultural Context:
Oxford places significant importance on studying literature within its historical and cultural contexts. Students gain insights into the societal influences that shaped literary works, providing a holistic understanding of the subject.
Writing a Cambridge English Personal Statement
Cambridge's English degree course offers a well-rounded curriculum that combines a strong foundation in English literary works with an opportunity to explore various art forms, including music and film in relation to literature . Furthermore, it delves into literature's connections with intellectual traditions such as philosophy, art history, and politics . In Year 1 (Part IA), students undertake compulsory papers in Practical Criticism and Critical Practice, along with an assessment of Shakespeare through a portfolio of essays. Year 2 (Part IB) introduces compulsory and optional papers spanning different literary periods from Early Medieval Literature to the 20th century. In Year 3 (Part II), students engage with compulsory papers in Practical Criticism and Critical Practice II, explore Tragedy across ages, and undertake a dissertation. Additionally, they can choose from a wide array of optional papers that evolve yearly, covering diverse topics such as Chaucer, American Literature, Visual Culture, and more.
Hereâs how to tailor your personal statement to align with these features:
Interdisciplinary Approach : Cambridge's English course places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary connections. In your personal statement, you could showcase your readiness to explore literature's intersections with other fields such as philosophy, art history, and politics. Mention any relevant experiences or readings that demonstrate your interest in these areas and how they relate to literature.
Exploration of Other Art Forms : Cambridge offers the opportunity to delve into other art forms, including music and film, in relation to literature. Highlight your passion for these art forms and their connections to literature. You could discuss a specific instance where you've analysed how music or film enhances the understanding of a literary work, for example, or how these art forms can provide fresh perspectives on literature.
Critical Thinking and Intellectual Traditions : Cambridge's English course encourages critical thinking and engagement with intellectual traditions. In your personal statement, you could emphasise your analytical abilities by discussing a piece of literature or a critical theory that challenged your thinking. Show how your engagement with intellectual traditions has shaped your approach to literature.
Broad Range of Literature : Mention your fascination with the diverse range of literary works in the Cambridge curriculum, spanning different eras and cultures. Highlight any books or authors that have particularly resonated with you, and explain how they have influenced your literary interests.
How is the Personal Statement Used in Oxbridge English Interviews?
Your personal statement offers admissions tutors a glimpse into your academic journey, showcasing your passion for English Literature or English Language. It acts as a crucial tool for them to assess your commitment to the subject and your ability to articulate your thoughts coherently and persuasively.
Through your personal statement, you have the opportunity to exhibit your enthusiasm for the subject. Your engagement with literary works, language theories, and academic experiences should shine through, portraying a genuine and dedicated interest in the field. Highlighting specific books, theories, or authors you admire and discussing how they have influenced your academic pursuits adds depth to your statement.
Admissions tutors use your personal statement to evaluate how well your academic goals align with the structure and ethos of the course you're applying for. Articulate why you believe the particular course at the university is the right fit for you. Demonstrating an understanding of the curriculum and emphasising how it will help you achieve your academic and career aspirations is key.
During the interview, the personal statement often serves as a starting point for discussion . The interviewers may delve into topics you've mentioned in your statement, seeking deeper insights into your thought processes and motivations. Therefore, it is essential to be well-prepared to expand on the ideas presented in your personal statement, providing a more comprehensive understanding of your perspective.

Exemplar Personal Statement for Oxford Language and Literature
Below is a sample English Language and Literature personal statement from U2 Tuition co-founder Camille, that was accepted for Oriel College, Oxford:
The importance of literature in society first became apparent to me when reading Miltonâs polemical tract Areopagitica. I was intrigued by the way he used languageâs potential not only to liberate, âgive me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freelyâ, but also to manipulate. It is fascinating that this idea of a âJanusâ facedâ side to words could have been promoted over 300 years ago. Today, in our progressively plural world and with languageâs increasing flexibility, I can see that Miltonâs ideas have developed still further. In a culture where we are constantly bombarded with messages, it is all the more important to discern meaning. Here, Saussureâs theories in semiotics have particular resonance. I believe an in-depth study of literature will teach me to deconstruct and question these uses of language. It was for this reason I undertook work as a research assistant on an Oxford University project, Examining the OED. Tracing how language changed over time demonstrated its fluidity and the nuances of the way words are actually used. Considering how literary writers have shaped and influenced the lexicon also showed me how literature constantly interacts with everyday life. This capacity for narrative to be an active force both in the shaping of the lexicon and also upon the reader, became evident to me during my Gap Year travels on the professional tennis tour. During this period of intense training and competition I drew inspiration, both as a tennis player and aspiring novelist, from travel writing such as Robert McFarlaneâs Mountains of the Mind and Old Ways and McDougallâs Born to Run. Upon my return I came across Robin Lydenbergâs essay Freudâs Uncanny Narratives. His discussion of the uncanny effect of Freudâs constant shift into autobiographical narrative and complex relation to Italy in The Uncanny, was particularly relevant to a study of a personal and travel narrative. I realised part of the attraction of these texts was their dealings with both the familiar and the foreign. I am also curious about the more typical territory of the uncanny in Gothic fiction, where terror is derived from something, at once strange and intrinsic, in the supernatural. I found the skeleton that reproaches Frederic for his lust in Walpoleâs The Castle of Otranto horrific in the truest Gothic sense - an instrument of manâs own secret fears, denials and desires. In a less overt manner (and as a possible reaction to Lewisâs The Monk) Radcliffe interweaves supernatural âmysteriesâ and human psychology in her rational explanations. I love how she shows the mind itself to almost be a supernatural entity. When reading Radcliffeâs work I was struck by her portrayal of her heroines as paradigms of innocence who cannot function in the active adult world. I recognised this as a recurring theme in Victorian texts like Gaskellâs Ruth, Rossettiâs Goblin Market and Wildeâs A Woman of No Importance. I thought it illuminating that despite Wildeâs feminist tendencies he sends Mrs. Arbuthnot into exile whilst Lord Illingworth is assimilated back into society. The conflict between the way writers depict the private ethics of their female protagonists and the realities of public life is also found in earlier works. In Shakespeareâs The Rape of Lucrece, Lucrece is only given some form of rhetorical political power by committing suicide. Likewise, in Titus Andronicus, Laviniaâs sacrifice and perhaps even her rape are necessary to reestablish purity in Rome, and in Medea, Medea only gains power over Jason by killing her own children. Her revenge is limited. The development of language, the influence of literature in everyday life and the way in which writers treat gender and the supernatural are just some of the literary ideas that intrigue me. I would relish the opportunity to deepen my understanding of these concepts and explore other periods and styles at University level.

Looking for an English Personal Statement Writing Tutor or Support For Your Wider Oxbridge English Application?
English Personal Statement Tutoring
U2 Tuitionâs Oxbridge-educated tutors have a close insight into what admissions tutors like to see in an English personal statement, and can help students to convey their skills, motivations, and long term goals, in order to stand out from other applicants. The statement should be the candidates own work, but our mentors will provide direction and guide you through the process of content building and writing. We offer offline drafting as well as tuition sessions.
Oxbridge English Tutoring
We have a large team of Oxbridge-educated English mentors including 1st Class, Masterâs and PhD level graduates, who support students through each stage of the application process, including personal statement, ELAT and interview preparation.
The Process:
1) We suggest an Oxbridge English graduate as a mentor and send their full CV for review. Our mentors are deeply familiar with the admissions process to study English at the University of Oxford, Cambridge, as well as top UK Universities such as UCL, and are well-placed to guide you through personal statement curation, the entrance exam and interview process. We may suggest a range of application tutors to choose from with slightly differing rates depending on qualifications and level of experience.
2) We typically suggest beginning with a 1.5 hour diagnostic session , where the mentor will informally assess the studentâs current performance level for application, including test and interview. Following this, we issue a report with feedback, and structure a plan to best prepare.
3) U2âs approach for regular English application sessions: The main focus of tutorial sessions will be to explore material that can be discussed in the personal statement and at interview - this may sometimes stretch from A-Level standard to First Year Undergraduate. Mentors ensure each student refines their literary interests, and is exposed to a range of literary eras, approaches and new concepts, guiding students in their reading and wider subject exploration. Together, we build a case for the student, solidifying the stance and direction they will take during interview and honing skills for the ELAT if applicable.
Frequency of sessions can be decided between student and mentor. Students can take either ad hoc sessions, or we structure a full programme for preparation, which may include further co-curricular opportunities such as our research projects , English Literature summer school and Oxbridge mock interview days. Honing the skills necessary to succeed for Oxbridge ideally requires long-term preparation and mentoring presents a wonderful opportunity to learn from some of the very best Oxbridge has produced.

Applying to Oxbridge: writing a personal statement
Writing an Oxbridge-quality personal statement can be challenging. Our comprehensive guide will help your students write a statement that stands out
UniAdmissions

In the UK, personal statements are a vital part of the university-application process, which is handled by Ucas .
However, writing an Oxbridge-quality personal statement is far more challenging for students than putting together a standard application. Why is this? And how can you support your Oxbridge applicants in writing a competitive and high-quality statement?
What is an Oxbridge personal statement?
A Ucas personal statement is a written statement (up to 4,000 characters) in which an applicant showcases their accomplishments, abilities, interests and goals to strengthen their application for higher education.
Every university in the UK requires a personal statement, including the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Although Oxbridge statements are functionally the same as any other, the quality of writing expected from applicants is much higher. This reflects how competitive and prestigious these two universities are, with more than 40,000 applications between them each year.
The quality of the personal statement becomes even more important for applicants outside the UK, because international students typically receive only 25 per cent of offers made by Oxford and Cambridge.
Personal statements must be written in English and are expected to reach a high standard of content quality and grammatical correctness. So the prospect of each studentâs Oxbridge application will be dependent to some extent on how well they can plan, draft and edit their personal statement.
The deadline for the personal statement â along with the rest of the Ucas application â is usually 16 October for Oxbridge applicants, which is more than three months earlier than the applications for the rest of the universities in the UK.
How is an Oxbridge personal statement used?
Unlike most universities in the UK, which rely on the Ucas application form and supporting materials to decide whether or not to offer a place, Oxford and Cambridge require applicants to complete extra steps before offers are made.
After the standard Ucas application, most applicants will need to complete a subject-specific admissions test, which is followed by an interview, should they be invited.
The personal statement is initially used during this shortlisting process, alongside the applicantâs predicted grades, admissions-test score and other supporting materials. It will also be considered in the final decision-making process, although the applicantâs interview performance will provide a greater insight into their personality and motivation for study.
What are Oxford and Cambridge looking for?
Oxbridge admissions tutors are interested in studentsâ grades, experiences and attitude. It's important to study the universities' specific guidelines rather than making assumptions about what an ideal candidate would look like.
Some of the key qualities that the universities look for include:
1. Academic ability and potential
Oxbridge seeks academically thriving applicants, judged first and foremost by their grades and school performance. Oxbridge applicants should already achieve or be expected to achieve the necessary grade criteria for their courses.
2. Critical and independent thought
Oxbridge seeks exceptionally intelligent applicants who possess critical-thinking skills. The ability to think logically in academic and everyday situations is important, because initiative and independent work are essential for the teaching style and work ethic promoted at Oxford and Cambridge.
3. Suitability and enthusiasm for the course
Each applicant must have a genuine passion for their subject, showcasing expanded interest and a desire to learn. Essential traits include motivation, self-discipline, commitment and a drive for personal growth.
Drafting a personal statement for Oxbridge
After writing the foundation of their personal statement, encompassing their personal story, academic achievements, subject-related experience, extracurricular activities and additional details, an applicant needs to assess whether their statement is likely to capture the interest of Oxford and Cambridge admissions tutors.
In all likelihood, the initial draft will fall short â only a small number of applicants manage to get their statement right on the first attempt. So how can they improve it?
1. Relevance
An Oxbridge hopeful needs to connect everything they discuss to their application. Relevance to the chosen course is essential. A detailed explanation of one highly relevant example holds more value than a list of several irrelevant activities. An applicant should reflect on their experience, highlighting their personal growth and explain why it makes them a stronger Oxbridge applicant.
2. Efficiency
Oxbridge admissions are fiercely competitive, so a sentence should be as efficient as possible in highlighting the applicantâs strongest attributes.
3. Wider reading
Oxford and Cambridge value applicants who take charge of their research and education. Your students should discuss any relevant wider reading and enrichment activities they have taken part in, including research projects, extensive reading, academic competitions and more.
4. Adding value
Oxbridge admissions tutors want a mutually enriching relationship with their students. Applicants should therefore highlight their value to the university, including volunteer experience, extracurricular activities and desirable skills or traits. While not core elements to a statement, these additions will have a significant impact.
Each personal statement will be different. You and the studentsâ teachers should provide advice based on what you know about them. Help them play to their strengths and highlight what makes them unique.
Common personal statement mistakes
A perfect personal statement is impossible to achieve, but sometimes your students will make simple mistakes that can have consequences for their applications. These are usually easy to avoid, so here are some of the most common mistakes you can watch out for:
1. Pandering to tutors
Applicants often misunderstand what admissions tutors want to see, and might attempt to impress them in misguided ways. Some will overload their personal statements with numerous achievements, assuming that tutors expect a long list. Others will embellish details to sound impressive. However, admissions tutors easily recognise these tactics, having reviewed countless personal statements during their careers.
We already know that tutors are actually looking for academic ability, independent thinking, genuine interest and good character, so these are the traits that you should encourage your students to showcase in their writing.
2. Lying and exaggerating
Students will often think that one small lie will go unnoticed or that they wonât be questioned on the specific details of what they have mentioned. However, as soon as a student is caught out for including false information in their statement, their whole application will be in danger.
When reviewing statements, itâs important for counsellors to question students if something seems untrue â but without making accusations. Mock interviews are also a great opportunity to identify any potential misrepresentation in the work.
3. Bad spelling or grammar
It is important to be vigilant when reviewing studentsâ statements, especially as English might not be your studentsâ first language. Encourage them to find mistakes themselves before pointing them out.
Additional tips
1. offer detailed feedback .
It is hugely beneficial to the student to receive detailed feedback with actionable advice. Going line by line through their personal statement, you can point out specific areas, both large and small, that could be improved to enhance its overall quality.
2. Provide exemplars
It is strongly recommended that you build a collection of successful Oxbridge personal statements for your students to use as inspiration (but not to copy). These can come from previous applicants or from other sources, such as the successful personal statement collection curated by UniAdmissions.
3. Use spell and grammar checks
Various pieces of advanced spellchecking and grammar-checking software are available, which will help your students review their work easily and accurately. You should encourage your class to make use of these, but to be careful that they only provide guidance rather then writing the whole statement.
4. Look out for AI-written statements
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly useful writing tool. However, it is not a suitable option for writing a personal statement because it cannot offer the personal insights and reflections that are required in a good statement.
5. Use available resources
Various resources are available to support students through their applications. For example, UniAdmissions offers students a comprehensive collection of resources and support methods that can triple an average studentâs chance of receiving an offer. Look into the options available to your students.
Upcoming changes to Ucas personal statements
Because of concerns that the existing personal-statement format unfairly advantages certain students, Ucas will be changing its requirements in 2024 (for 2025 university entry in the UK).
The current format sees each student writing a single, free-form document for submission. The new system will instead be based on a series of six questions, which will cover all the general topics that would be discussed in a standard personal statement. This change will affect all applicants to UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
The quality of content required for Oxbridge personal statements will not be changing, but applicants will need to adapt to a new, more limited way of writing. Full details about these changes, including the new questions and the reasoning behind the changes, can be found on the Ucas website .

English Literature Personal Statement Example
As an avid reader and student of English Literature, I have developed a strong interest in exploring the depths of literary analysis and critical theory. My studies at A level have provided me with a firm foundation in independent research and critical thinking, which I believe are essential skills for success in the field of English Literature.
During my studies, I have delved into Shakespeare’s works, particularly “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Merchant of Venice”, using Leach Scragg’s “Discovering Shakespeare’s Meaning” to gain a more thorough understanding of the plays. Additionally, Anthony Holden’s biography of Shakespeare has helped me to appreciate the context and historical significance of his work. I have also recently begun exploring critical theory through “Literary Theory: An Anthology”, edited by Rivkin and Ryan, which has piqued my interest in further exploring the theoretical underpinnings of literature.
While my studies thus far have focused largely on modern literature, I have developed a newfound interest in the Victorian novel as a precursor to modernism. I have been particularly intrigued by the didactic, omniscient narrator and how Victorian authors grappled with issues of contemporary social change. Reading Dickens’s “Great Expectations” and Eliot’s “Middlemarch” has allowed me to explore these themes in greater depth. I am also fascinated by the expression of religious faith and doubt in Victorian post-romantic poetry, such as Arnold’s “Dover Beach” and Clough’s “The Latest Decalogue”.
In addition to my studies, I have broadened my knowledge of literature through art and French classes. In my art class, I am currently writing a critical and analytical study on the Stuckism movement, while last year I completed a project based on Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales”. My French studies have allowed me to explore foreign literature, including Pagnol’s “Jean de Florette” and “Manon des Sources”, and have given me the valuable skill of revising my thinking before speaking or writing.
My A level in Media Production and Communication has furthered my interest in linguistics, and reading Phillip Howard’s “The State of the Language” has opened my eyes to the richness and complexity of the English language. I have had the opportunity to write and edit for campus publications, and am excited about the possibility of being involved in future publications.
My love of theatre has allowed me to experience literature in a different medium. I have seen productions by the RSC and our local TOADs theatre company, and have even had a role in a university student play. Witnessing the power of live performance has inspired me to think more deeply about how literature can be brought to life.
My experiences as an English Literature student have fueled my passion for literary analysis, critical theory, and linguistic exploration. I look forward to continuing my studies and pursuing a career in the field of English Literature.
English Literature Personal Statement Example for UCAS
As a student of history and French, I have always been fascinated by the power of language and how it shapes our understanding of the world. My studies have given me a deep appreciation for the nuances of language and how different linguistic structures can convey complex ideas and emotions. This enthusiasm has led me to explore the English language and literature in greater depth, and to seek out opportunities to engage with the works of some of the most influential writers of the past century.
One of the most inspiring experiences I have had in this regard was my invitation to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference in Seattle. This event brought together young people from around the world to explore the challenges and opportunities facing our global community. Through a series of lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions, we were able to engage with a wide range of topics, from environmental sustainability and social justice to entrepreneurship and leadership. For me, the most memorable aspect of the conference was the opportunity to discuss the role of literature in shaping our understanding of these issues. Through these conversations, I came to appreciate the power of literature not only as a tool for self-expression and personal growth but also as a means of fostering empathy and understanding across cultures and communities.
Two writers who have had a particularly profound impact on my thinking in this regard are George Orwell and Mark Twain. Orwell’s life and work, in particular, have greatly interested me. His experiences in the Spanish Civil War and his reflections on the nature of power and authority in modern society have helped to shape my own political and social beliefs. Likewise, Twain’s irreverent wit and his keen observations of human behaviour have challenged me to think critically about the world around me. Through these writers, I have come to appreciate how literature can help us to navigate the complexities of our own lives and the world at large.
My academic background also reflects my passion for English literature. I have A-levels in English literature, history, and biology, which have given me a broad range of skills and knowledge that I believe will be useful in pursuing further studies in this field. In particular, my studies in biology have given me an appreciation for how scientific thinking can inform our understanding of literature, from how we interpret and analyze language to the psychological and neurological processes that underpin our reading experiences.
As I look to the future, I am excited by the prospect of further exploring the intersections between language, literature, and society. I believe that studying English literature will not only deepen my understanding of the world around me but also equip me with the skills and insights needed to make meaningful contributions to my community and beyond. I am eager to engage with the works of writers both past and present, to explore how language and literature can help us to grapple with the most pressing issues of our time, and to contribute to the ongoing conversation about the role of the humanities in shaping our collective future.
Personal Statement For English Literature
I always had a passion for literature, and pursuing an English Literature degree seemed like a natural choice for me. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the way words can be woven together to create complex narratives and powerful emotions. Through my studies in A-level English Literature and Media, I have developed my analytical thinking and gained a deeper understanding of classic works of literature as well as diverse media forums.
One of the things that set me apart from other students is my ability to communicate effectively through my writing skills. I have always been drawn to the written word and have a talent for expressing my thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely. Whether it’s through essays, creative writing, or journalism, I am confident in my ability to use language to convey my message.
Throughout my academic journey, I have also been involved in various extra-curricular activities. One of my proudest achievements was organizing an entire show for 19th Century History Month, which required me to draw on my creativity and organizational skills. This experience taught me the value of teamwork, communication, and dedication, which are all essential skills that I will carry with me throughout my future endeavours.
In addition to my extra-curricular activities, I was also selected as head girl in my primary school, where I was responsible for maintaining discipline and providing leadership to my peers. This experience allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and learn the importance of empathy and understanding when working with others.
I had the opportunity to intern with a secondary school newspaper for two years, where I honed my journalism skills and gained valuable experience in the field. I learned the importance of accurate research, effective communication, and engaging storytelling, which are all essential skills that will serve me well in my future career.
My passion for English Literature, combined with my skills in communication, organization, and leadership, make me a strong candidate for a degree in English Literature. I am excited about the opportunity to continue my academic journey and explore the endless possibilities that the world of literature has to offer.

English literature personal statement example 1.
When I saw Gatz, John Collin's eight hour interpretation of The Great Gatsby, I noticed that Fitzgerald changes the colour of Daisy's hair every time he describes it. It is "like a dash of blue paint", "yellowy" like her daughters and then "dark, shining". Perhaps Fitzgerald believed that Daisy, a character so transient that her love fluctuates from one man to another within a page, was too contradictory, too whimsical to retain a fixed appearance. For Gatsby she is a dream, an ideal guaranteed to disappoint and as our view of her changes so does her hair. It is small details, a single word that changes the meaning of a passage, which make me love English Literature. In An Irish Airman Foresees His Death Yeats writes "I know that I shall meet my fate somewhere among the clouds above" and then later "a lonely impulse of delight drove to this tumult in the clouds". The pilot, who had been looking up at the clouds that are "above" him, is suddenly "in" them and we get a powerful sense of his ascent with only the use of two prepositions.
Podcasts of lectures given by Helen Vendler on poems such as Sailing to Byzantium and Among School Children inspired my interest in Yeats but the Romanticism that was so influential in his earlier work also fascinates me. In She Walks in Beauty Byron describes the light that "one ray the less" would have destroyed the grace that effuses both the trees and the face in his poem. I love the idea that the woman is made beautiful by light - that nature has the power to "mellow" a face or "solemnise" the mind as Shelley writes in Frankenstein. I also became interested in the lives of the Romantics after watching the plays Bloody Poetry, Mary Shelley and the film Bright Star.
It was through Bright Star that I discovered my favourite poem Ode To A Nightingale - the sense of "drowsy numbness" allows us "to dissolve", like the narrator, and travel "through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways" until we are "upon the midnight" with the nightingale. The same sense of "dreamy divagation" is present in The Moose by Elizabeth Bishop and in both cases after being lulled by the gentle progression of the poem we are quickly awakened: Bishop "stops with a jolt" and Keats asks "do I wake or sleep?" I am looking forward to comparing literature in this way on a university course.
Attending my school's feminist society has inspired me to question portrayals of women in literature. King Lear blames his wife for the wickedness of his daughters, Austen's Lizzy flaunts convention so successfully that she attracts a millionaire and marries him, Bella is referred to as "the lovely woman" throughout Our Mutual Friend and Sonya is dismissed as a "sterile flower" when Nikolai abandons her in War and Peace. I am currently reading Middlemarch, which with Eliot's realistic heroines and flawed male characters, seems indicative of a radical change in the way in which women were being viewed both in literature and outside of it.
I have been strengthening my analytical skills with the creation of a blog in which I review the books I have recently read, such as Catch 22, A Picture of Dorian Grey and The View from Castle Rock. This was especially beneficial when participating in an exhibition at the British Museum. I was part of a project in which we were asked to respond, through descriptions and sketches, to the construction of a new North West wing of the gallery. I am interested in combining English and Art further and so would like to spend a year doing an art foundation before returning to academic study. Volunteering in the SEN department of my school has also had a profound effect on the way I view English Literature; many of the teenagers I work with find reading challenging and often struggle to express their opinions. By reading and discussing novels with them I realize that I am only just beginning to appreciate English Literature and am excited about expanding my knowledge on a university course.

One simple scentence: I LOVE this statement. It is no surprise to me at all that a personal statement like this one turns out to be so successful. It is original, subject-based and portrays all the experience its author has had so far - which are a lot of very suitable ones. Wisely chosen examples that show the author's knowledge, passion and development through literature. You don't catch yourself drifting away in thought, you are actually drawn in by the statement and want to read on until the end. I am in love with it and I hope to create a statement as fascinating as this as well. Wish me luck!

Below is a sample English Language and Literature personal statement from U2 Tuition co-founder Camille, that was accepted for Oriel College, Oxford: The importance of literature in society first became apparent to me when reading Milton's polemical tract Areopagitica.
Language and literature are the strongest forms of weaponry to exist. The alignment of each letter, the meticulous assortment of the vowels and consonants to produce a word, the hard phonetic quality of the 'ger' sound in the word anger and the soft lulling 'l' in love induce an emotional human response.
Oxbridge Example English personal statement. Literature is more than a form of escapism. I believe the written word is an insightful representation of the human condition; it is essentially empathy manifested, and subsequently presents the same fundamental ethical issues and questions that arise naturally from human understanding.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region
Table of contents:, history of the city, park of culture and leisure, historical and art museum, october cultural center, kristall ice palace, memorial complex, museum and exhibition complex.
2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06
In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.
Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.
The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.
Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".
You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.
Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.
Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.
The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.
One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.
Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.
One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.
There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.
In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.
There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.
Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968
But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.
It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.
In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.
Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.
Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

The art of command
The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .
Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.
Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.
As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.
A characteristic aesthetic
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 oâclock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 oâclock for more intuitive reading of the watch.
A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master IIâs countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.
Oystersteel
Highly resistant to corrosion
Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential.
Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.
The Oyster bracelet
Alchemy of form and function.
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.
This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
