The Sabre 28 is an above-average coastal cruiser that should appeal to a couple or small family.
The Sabre 28 was the smallest boat in the line produced by Sabre Yachts of South Casco, Maine for much of the company’s history. The production run of the 28 lasted 14 years, from 1972 to 1986.
The Sabre 28 was the only model produced by the company until 1977, when the Sabre 34 entered production. In 1979 the gap between the Sabre 28 and the 34 was filled with a 30-footer of a design very similar to that of her two sisters. In 1982, the Sabre 38 was introduced, and features both a standard and an aft-cabin layout. A 32 was added in 1984, a 36 in 1985, and a 42-footer in 1987. Along the way, the 28 acquired a ketch-rig option. The 28 was dropped at the same time the 42 was introduced.
All boats in the Sabre line are of the modern cruiser-racer type, with fin keel and skeg-hung spade rudder. With a 1981 base price of about $37,000, and an average delivered price in southern New England of about $40,000 without sails or electronics, the Sabre 28 was a relatively expensive 28′ boat.
Despite a fairly high initial cost, the Sabre 28 has proved to be a good investment for her owners. One owner responding to The Practical Sailor’s boatowners’ survey reported that he paid $14,900 for his boat in 1973. That same boat in 1981 was worth about $24,000. A Sabre 28 purchased in 1976 cost $22,000, and was worth about $29,000 in 1981. The collapse of market values in the ’90s is evident in the latest figures, however: a 1986 Sabre 28, which cost $48,900 new, is now worth only about $34,000. This is typical of recent trends, and does not reflect on the Sabre 28—indeed, it’s held more of its value than many boats.
Owners report that the primary motivation for purchasing the boat can be summed up in one word: quality. Sabre is quite conscious of their producing a high-quality boat. The boat attracts buyers willing to pay a little more than average for a boat that is better than average.
As with all boats that have been in production for a number of years, the design of the Sabre 28 has evolved and improved over the years. In particular, a number of minor changes were made in August, 1982, some of which are noted below. Therefore, the price of a used Sabre 28 may be a function of whether it has some of the more desirable features.
The Sabre 28 is conventionally modern in appearance. She has a modest concave sheer, straight raked stern, and short after overhang.
Construction
The hull of the Sabre 28 is a slightly heavier-than-average hand layup of mat and roving. Some roving print through is evident, but there are no visible hard spots in the hull. Gelcoat quality is excellent.
There are optional hull and deck colors besides the stock white on white. On an early Sabre 28 we examined, the red gelcoat had faded to a dull pink, and the boat was past due for painting. In general red hulls are more susceptible to fading.
The deck of the Sabre 28 is balsa-cored for stiffness, with plywood inserts at stress areas such as winch mountings. The hull-to-deck joint uses a fairly standard internal hull flange, butyl-bedded and through bolted on 6″ centers with stainless steel bolts. These bolts also serve to attach a vinyl rubrail and the teak toerail: The hull-to-deck joint is through bolted across the transom.
All deck hardware, including stanchions, pulpits, and cleats, is through bolted and backed with thick aluminum plates which serve to distribute load. The stem fitting is a well-finished aluminum casting.
Skin fittings are recessed flush with the hull surface. All underwater through hull openings are fitted with bronze Spartan seacocks. Spartan seacocks have a short, lipped hose tailpiece rather than the more typical long straight tailpiece of other seacocks.
This short tailpiece precludes double clamping of hoses. This single hose clamp on below-water fit tings is fine as long as the hose clamps are kept tight. We recommend that they be checked at regular intervals.
In general, construction details are among the best that we’ve seen on a production sailboat. All fillet bonding is absolutely neat. There are no rough fiberglass areas anywhere. All exposed interior fiberglass surfaces, such as bilges and the inside of lockers, are gelcoated or painted.
Although tiller steering is standard, about 90% of the boats were delivered with Edson pedestal wheel steerers equipped with Ritchie compasses. The wheel steering option has proven so popular that in 1976 the cockpit of the Sabre 28 was redesigned to accommodate the wheel without interfering with the seating arrangement. Access to the rudder stock for emergency steering is via a plastic plate in the cockpit sole. An emergency tiller is provided with wheel-steered boats.
The mast of the Sabre 25 is a straight section Awlgripped aluminum extrusion built by Rig-Rite. Internal halyards, internal clew outhaul, topping lift, and two-point jiffy reefing are standard, as is a transom-mounted ball-bearing mainsheet traveler. The mast is deck-stepped in an aluminum casting. In new boats, this mast step has been redesigned to incorporate attachment points for blocks, facilitating the leading of halyards aft to the cockpit. Halyard winches mounted on the cabin top are another popular option.
Mast compression is transferred to the hull structure by a teak compression column incorporated in the main bulkhead. Shroud chainplates are heavily through-bolted to the main bulkhead, which is solidly glassed to the hull.
Originally, the Sabre 28 was rigged with single upper and lower shrouds. In 1975 forward lower shrouds were added to reduce mast pumping under sail and vibration at the mooring. Mast vibration in high winds, even at anchor, is a common problem with deck-stepped masts. Not all older Sabre 28s have been retrofitted with the additional set of lower shrouds. If purchase of a pre-1975 model is contemplated, be sure to ascertain that the forward lower shrouds have been installed.
The ballast keel is an external lead casting, well faired to the hull. Keelboats are accessible in the bilge for periodic tightening.
Construction of the Sabre 28 is strong without being overly heavy. There is no evidence of hurrying to finish the job anywhere in the boat.
Handling Under Sail
With optional wheel steering, optional cockpit-led halyards, and optional self-tailing headsail sheet winches, the Sabre 28 can easily be handled by one or two people. The mainsheet is within easy reach of the helmsman. Unfortunately, his head is also within easy reach of the mainsheet when jibing, except on newer boats; the mainsheet was relocated to the cabin top in 1982.
With main chainplates set well inboard, the headsail sheeting base of the boat is quite narrow, particularly if the boat is equipped with the optional inboard genoa track in addition to the standard toerail-mounted genoa track, The sheeting base is, for example, almost a foot narrower than that of the Hunter 27. This allows the Sabre 28 to be reasonably close-winded. With her relatively small wetted surface and a big genoa, she will be fast in light air.
Unless the water in your cruising area is spread very thin, we suggest you look for the standard keel version rather than the shoal keel. The shoal keel presents a less efficient lateral plane for windward work.
Some attention will have to be paid to the size of headsail used. Owners report that, although the Sabre 28 more than holds her own with other boats of her size and type, she is not a particularly stiff boat. Owners consider her performance well above average, although her PHRF rating suggests only average performance compared to similar cruiserracers. Due to the off-center solid prop, the boat may be faster on one tack than the other, and owners who intend to race the Sabre 28 should experiment to see if this is the case.
Handling Under Power
Several different engines were used in the Sabre 28. Until 1975 all were equipped with the Atomic Four gasoline engine. In 1975 a 10 horsepower Volvo diesel was offered as an option. In 1978, both these engines were dropped, and the Volvo MD7A diesel became standard. The MD7A is a two cylinder engine rated at 13 horsepower. In 1981 it was replaced by the Westerbeke 13.
The propeller shaft on the right hand turning Atomic Four is offset to port. On the left hand turning Volvos, it is offset to starboard. On the earliest Sabre 28s the shaft was on centerline. This change in engines from right hand to left hand rotation means that replacement of engines in off-center located Atomic Four powered boats will be limited to either the Atomic Four gas engine or some other right hand turning engine. Otherwise there will be considerable compromise in handling characteristics under power.
Owners report that engine access on early Atomic Four equipped models is poor. In current Volvo-powered models, access for routine service is good. Some joinerwork disassembly—planned in, fortunately—is required for engine removal, Routine service is via doors and panels.
There is no oil sump under the engine. Access to the stuffing box, needed annually for repacking and adjustment, is poor. Engine instruments—a full bank, with no idiot lights —are mounted in the bridgedeck, with engine starting and stopping controls under the helmsman’s seat. While this may seem awkward at first, it does protect the always-vulnerable ignition switch from water. This is an unusual, but reasonable arrangement.
Owners consider the boat’s handling under power to be good. With her fin keel and spade rudder, she will turn in a tight circle. Owners report that any of the engines will drive the boat at or near “hull speed” under most conditions,
Deck Layout
In 1976, a foredeck anchor well was added to the Sabre 28. The well is large enough to hold adequate primary ground tackle for the boat. It has provision for securing the bitter end of the anchor rode in boats built since 1982. We would add an eyebolt or U-bolt to the well for this purpose if it is not already there.
The water tank vent is located in the anchor well. This is a rational location for an item whose position is commonly an afterthought. Frequently, tank vents are located in the topsides, just below the sheer, This can cause backsiphoning of salt water into fuel or freshwater tanks. We saw this occur on several boats—not Sabres—in the 1979 Marion-Bermuda race, which featured four days of slogging to windward in heavy air.
The Sabre 28 is one of the few boats we have seen that uses Skene bow chocks. Skene chocks effectively hold the anchor rode or mooring lines in the chocks, even if the boat sails around on her anchor. This is an important consideration in many modern boats, for the Sabre 28, like many modern sloops of moderate displacement, probably sails almost as many miles while anchored or moored as when underway.
Heavy teak handrails and a very effective molded-in nonskid surface facilitate movement on deck in a seaway. The side decks are of necessity narrow due to the wide cabin trunk.
The cockpit of the Sabre 28 is large and comfortable. It is as large a cockpit as we would consider safe for offshore sailing on a 28′ boat. With wheel steering the cockpit easily seats five.
Cockpit lockers deserve special comment. There are two molded-in recesses in the winch islands, handy for winch handles, sail stops, and other small items. There is a shallow lift-top locker under the port cockpit seat, a deeper locker under the helmsman’s seat, and a deep locker under the starboard seat.
The deep starboard locker is bulkheaded off from the bowels of the boat so that sails, fenders, and lines will not migrate to the depths of the bilge. This locker contains built-in holders for the companionway drop boards and emergency tiller, as well as a shelf arranged for line stowage. Although the lid to this locker is a little small for the easy removal of sails, it is one of the best designed cockpit lockers we have seen.
By comparison, the companionway is a bit of a disappointment. Although it is suitably narrow and has a good bridgedeck, the opening is sharply tapered, allowing removal of the drop boards by lifting them only about an inch.
The drop boards themselves are 1/2″ teak-faced plywood in early boats, solid teak in post-1982 models. The exposed edge grain of the plywood core will soon turn gray unless the boards are well varnished. Eventually they may delaminate. We believe that plywood should not be used where it will be subject to weathering. Frankly, the boards look a little cheap on a boat of this quality.
Newer boats have a transparent smoked plexiglass companionway hatch top. Older boats have fiberglass hatches. The plexiglass hatch allows a good deal of light below.
At night, when tied to the dock, it also allows people on the dock to stare into the main cabin. An often forgotten corollary to transparent hatches is that if they allow light below during the day, they allow it out at night. The glare of a white light belowdecks can wipe out the helmsman’s night vision. Not a common problem, admittedly, but a real one nonetheless.
The first impression of the Sabre 28 belowdecks is that she is roomy, neat, and well-finished. Headroom is 6′ under the main hatch, and an honest 5′ 11″ in the main cabin.
The forward cabin contains V-berths with a filler to form a double. The 30-gallon molded polyethylene water tank is located under the forward berths. There is a drawer and a bin under each berth.
With the forward hatch open, it is possible to stand and dress comfortably with the berth filler removed.
The head is full width and closes off from both the forward cabin and main cabin by doors. The Sabre 28 came standard with a 22-gallon holding tank. A Y-valve diverter was optional.
Despite a lot of teak bulkheads and trim, the main cabin is bright and attractive. There are substantial grab rails overhead. The port settee extends to form a double berth. With all berths filled, the Sabre 28 sleeps six. Frankly, six people on a 28′ boat is too many, even for a weekend. We would prefer an alternate four-berth interior arrangement that provides a larger galley. Some older Sabre 28s are equipped with such a layout.
A bulkhead-mounted fold-down cabin table seats four comfortably. It is secured in the folded position by a screw-type hatch dog, a good idea, since a rattling table can drive you to distraction.
At the after end of the main cabin, the galley is located to starboard, with a quarterberth to port. Galley storage is good, with four drawers and several lockers. The galley sink is located just off centerline, almost under the companionway. While this location is good for ensuring that the sink will drain on either tack, care must be taken going below when well heeled on the port tack to avoid stepping into the sink.
The galley stove is a recessed two-burner Kenyon alcohol stove. Stoves of this type, which have integral fuel tanks with the fuel fill located between the burners, present a potential fire hazard if the fuel tank is refilled before the burners have cooled adequately.
On pre-1982 boats, the icebox is well insulated with the exception of the top. Given the fact that Sabre has gone so far as to install an icebox pump to keep ice melt from smelling up the bilge, we were pleased to see them complete the otherwise well designed icebox in 1982 by insulating the top and lids.
Wiring, plumbing—in general, all finishing details—are well designed and neatly finished. The location of the main electrical panel next to the companionway, where it is vulnerable to spray, is an exception to the generally well thought out installations.
Four opening ports are standard; an additional hatch over the main cabin is optional. We recommend this additional ventilation if the boat is to be used in a warm climate. The dorade box over the head is the only provision for foul-weather ventilation.
Conclusions
The Sabre 28 is an attractive, well-built, well-finished boat. Although her price is above average, construction and finish details are also well above average for a stock boat. Despite her modern underbody, she is a conservative design, conservatively built.
The Sabre 28 is neither an all-out racer, nor an allout cruiser. She is a good compromise boat, strong enough to cruise with confidence and fast enough not to embarrass.
She is good-looking in a modern way, without being so modern as to be trendy. She will probably not appeal to the hard-core traditionalist, nor to the flat-out modernist. She appeals mostly as a well turned out coastal cruiser for the couple or a small family. The Sabre 25 may be no Swan, but she’s a long way from an ugly duckling.

SABRE 28: A Solid Pocket Cruiser
This stylish little pocket yacht is both the first and smallest boat ever produced by Sabre Yachts , a quality production boatbuilder based in southern Maine. Designed by the company’s founder, Roger Hewson, and introduced in 1971, the Sabre 28 was the only boat produced by Sabre until 1977. Production did not cease until 1986, by which time 588 hulls had been launched.
The boat has a generous rig, is not at all slow for its size, and early in its career was often raced as a Half-Tonner under the old IOR rule . Today many Sabre 28s still sail in club races with PHRF ratings below 200, but they are primarily used as cruising vessels. Though most suitable for coastal work due to their small size and low-capacity tanks, they are certainly strong enough to sail offshore if desired.
The boat’s construction is straightforward and well executed. The hull is solid fiberglass laminate set in polyester resin with eight layers of mat and woven roving down low tapering up to four layers at the sheerline. The exterior gelcoat is excellent. The deck is balsa-cored with plywood substituted in high-load areas where hardware is mounted; the hardware is also supported by heavy aluminum backing plates.
Secondary bonds between the hull and bulkheads and other structural members are superb, as is the finish quality of the glass work generally. The ballast is lead, mounted externally on stainless-steel keel bolts that are easily accessed in the bilge. The deck joint consists of an inward-facing flange bedded in non-adhesive butyl sealant and fastened every 6 inches with stainless-steel bolts. One significant flaw in earlier boats is that the through-deck chainplates were sometimes poorly sealed. This can cause the main bulkhead, to which the chainplates are fastened, to delaminate and eventually rot if it is not corrected.
Several modifications were made to the Sabre 28 over time. In 1976 a new deck mold was created. This incorporated an anchor well up forward, a reconfigured T-shaped cockpit that more easily accommodates a pedestal and wheel (only about 10 percent of the boats have the standard tiller steering), plus a more attractive split aft window on the cabin side.
The deck-stepped rig was also improved about this time. Forward lower shrouds were added to keep the mast from pumping too much and the chainplate seals were improved. In 1982 the height of the mast was slightly increased from 41 feet to 43 feet (increasing sail area by 12 square feet), the standard keel’s draft was increased 4 inches, ballast was increased by 200 pounds, and the mainsheet traveler was moved from the transom (where it sometimes caused the mainsheet to quarrel with the helmsman’s head) to the coachroof forward of the companionway.
There were four different auxiliary engines installed in the Sabre 28 over the course of its production run. The old gasoline-powered Atomic-4 was available until 1978, as was a 10 hp (later a 13 hp) Volvo diesel. Finally, after 1981, a 13 hp Westerbeke diesel was installed. On many of the early boats the prop shaft is slightly offset to one side or the other, depending on which way the propeller turns. It is critical when repowering one of these boats to make sure the new engine turns the prop the same direction as before or handling under power will be severely degraded.
As mentioned, the Sabre 28 sails well for a boat its size, thanks both to its large sail plan and its well-formed fin keel and skeg-supported spade rudder. For a boat that is not terribly light it is particularly handy in light air; it is a bit tender and heels quickly when the wind gets up unless sails are promptly reefed. Because the chainplates are well inboard, headsail sheeting angles are potentially quite narrow. But boats equipped with the optional inboard genoa track (there is also a standard toerail track) and a standard deep keel (as opposed to the optional shoal-draft keel) are reasonably close-winded. Note, however, that boats with offset prop shafts sail a bit better on one tack than they do on the other.
The one drawback to the Sabre 28 from a cruiser’s perspective is that its interior can feel cramped. It does have good standing headroom for a small boat (about 6 feet throughout), but the cockpit is also large (7 feet long) and this inevitably shrinks the space available belowdeck. Also, the standard sleeping layout on most boats is over-ambitious, theoretically accommodating six people (two in the V-berth forward, two on the port settee extended to form a double, one on the starboard settee, and one in a quarterberth).
The six-berth layout reduces galley space, which is unfortunate. The sink, though it is close to the centerline and drains well on both tacks, is also right beside the companionway so that you can easily put a foot in it when coming below. The fixed countertop stove is hard to cook on while sailing and the tight space makes it hard to install a gimballed stove in its place. There is also a much more realistic four-berth layout with a somewhat larger galley, but this appeared in only a few of the earlier boats.
The interior in other respects is very pleasant. The quality teak joinery, rare on a boat this small, makes it warm and attractive, the fold-down bulkhead table works well, and the athwartship private head compartment is as functional as you can expect on an older boat less than 30 feet long.
Due to the quality of its construction, the Sabre 28 is more expensive than other used boats in this size range. The extra money spent, however, is not wasted. Because they are nicer boats to begin with, most owners maintain their Sabre 28s in good to excellent condition. Sabre still provides lots of technical support for their out-of-production boats, so it isn’t hard to get parts or good advice when planning upgrades and structural repairs. The boats also hold their value well compared to similar vessels.
In the end, the Sabre 28 is a very safe compromise boat. It has relatively modern lines, yet is attractive to traditionalists, is very well built, sails well, and has a great ambiance below, if not an ideal layout. Unfortunately, these boats rarely appear on the brokerage market on the West Coast, but if you live on the East Coast they are readily available.

In the mid 1970’s my folks were considering the purchase of a new Sabre 28. We had a Pearson 26 at the time, and even though the Sabre was only 2 feet longer, it was a lot roomier.
It was also finished alot nicer; the quality of the wood and the joiner work being excellent.
The yacht broker would not come down off the price, and recommended a that he take a look at a new Tartan 30 which was also in the same yard.
Dad finally decided to purchase the Tartan, which was not quite as well finished interior wise, however, a better sailing boat than the Sabre 28.
We spent the next ten years racing the Tartan and cruising during the Summer months.
I still remember how nicely constructed the Sabre 28 was. We later found out that the owner of the company had been in the furniture business prior to getting into boat building, which is why the quality of the interior on the Sabre sailboats has always been superb.
I have a question regarding the spinner propeller on the keel of my 1973 Sabre 28 mk 1. The cable has snapped off inside the spinner and I need to remove it from the keel to get the broken piece of cable( the square end) out of the spinner so I can replace the cable which I already have. My question is, what is the easiest way to remove the spinner from the keel after removing the 4 bolts inside the bilge? Please reply ASAP if possible. Thank you, Chuck Stock
@Chuck: I assume by the “spinner propeller” you’re referring a sensor for an electronic log, no? I personally can’t help you with this, but you may well find someone at Sabre who can. I’d start by getting in touch with them. cheers! charlie

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.

Bluewater Sailboat – Sabre 28
For a significant portion of the company’s history, Sabre Yachts of South Casco, Maine, produced the Sabre 28 as the smallest yacht in its line. The Bluewater Sailboat Sabre 28 was manufactured for 14 years, from 1972 to 1986. The Sabre 28 might be the right boat for a sailor who values a sturdy hull, safety, luxury, and convenience without forgoing abundance. This sloop has been put to the test for more than 30 years, and she continually outperforms other boats in her class. That means that when the going gets rough, you can rely on her to face the waves.
After attempting to construct the greatest 28 foot fibreglass laminate sloop currently in production, Roger Hewson improved this award-winning design. The Sabre 28 was a huge success, producing more than 500 hulls.
The Sabre 28 in question is a mark 2 model. She has a roller-furling Genoa for simple sail maintenance and a dodger to shield the helmsman from the elements. Her tiller-pilot Auto-helm and GPS system will make it convenient for you to occasionally leave the helm. This makes navigation simpler and more secure.

The first and smallest boat ever built by Sabre Yachts, a reputable production boatbuilder based in southern Maine, is this chic tiny pocket yacht. The Sabre 28 was the only boat made by Sabre until 1977. It was created by the company’s founder, Roger Hewson, and released in 1971. 588 hulls had been launched by the time production ended in 1986.
Up until 1977, when the Sabre 34 went into production, the business exclusively produced the Sabre 28. In 1979, a 30-footer with a design strikingly like that of her two sisters was built to fill the space between the Sabre 28 and the 34. The Sabre 38, which debuted in 1982, offers both a normal and an aft-cabin layout.
A 32, a 36, and a 42-footer were added in 1984, 1985, and 1987, respectively. The 28 eventually gained a ketch-rig option. When the 42 was introduced, the 28 was also dropped. All of the Sabre line’s boats have fin keels and skeg-hung spade rudders, making them contemporary cruiser-racers.
Early in its existence, the boat was frequently raced as a Half-Tonner under the previous IOR regulation because of its spacious rig, lack of slowness for its size, and speed. Even though many Sabre 28s today still compete in club races with PHRF ratings under 200, their primary use is as cruising boats.
They are undoubtedly robust enough to go offshore if wanted, but due to their small size and low tank capacity, they are best suited for coastal operations.
The Sabre 28’s design has changed and advanced through time, much like all boats that have been manufactured for a while. Particularly, a few small modifications were performed in August 1982.

The Bluewater Sailboat Sabre 28’s hull is made out of a hand-layup of mat and roving that is a little heavier than usual. There are some roving print throughs but no obvious hard areas in the hull. The gelcoat is of exceptional quality. Other than the standard white on white, there are several hull and deck color options.
The Sabre 28’s deck is balsa-cored for rigidity and has plywood inserts in high-stress locations like winch mountings. A fairly normal internal hull flange, butyl-bedded and through fastened on 6′′ centres with stainless steel bolts, is used for the hull-to-deck junction.
These fasteners also hold the teak toerail and vinyl rubrail in place: Through bolts are used to connect the hull to the deck over the transom. All of the deck’s gear, such as the stanchions, pulpits, and cleats, are through-bolted and supported by substantial aluminium plates that disperse the load. Aluminum casting with a fine finish makes up the stem fitting.
Skin fittings are flush with the surface of the hull. All hull ports that can be reached underwater are equipped with bronze Spartan seacocks. Instead of the more common long, straight tailpiece found on other seacocks, Spartan seacocks have a short, lipped hose tailpiece. The hoses cannot be double clamped because of the small tailpiece. As long as the hose clamps are kept tight, this single hose clamp on below-water fittings is acceptable.
On a factory sailboat, the build details are generally among the best. Every single fillet bonding is flawless. Nowhere is there a rough fibreglass area. Every exposed interior fibreglass surface, including bilges and the interior of lockers, is painted or gelcoated.
Approximately 90% of the boats were provided with Edson pedestal wheel steerers fitted with Ritchie compasses, despite the fact that tiller steering is the norm. Because the wheel steering option has been so well-liked, the cockpit of the Sabre 28 was rebuilt in 1976 to make room for the wheel without compromising the seating configuration. Through a plastic plate in the cockpit sole, the emergency steering rudder stock is accessible. Wheel-steered boats come with an emergency tiller.
Straight piece Awlgripped aluminium extrusion manufactured by Rig-Rite serves as the Sabre 25’s mast. A transom-mounted ball-bearing mainsheet traveler with internal halyards, internal clew outhaul, topping lift, and two-point jiffy reefing are all standard. The mast has deck steps that are cast out of aluminium. This mast step has been rebuilt in recent boats to include connection places for blocks, making it easier to bring halyards to the cockpit from the rear. Another common alternative is halyard winches installed on the top of the cabin.
A teak compression column built into the main bulkhead transfers the compression of the mast to the hull structure. The main bulkhead, which is firmly glassed to the hull, is secured with many through-bolts.
This Bluewater Sailboat’s original rigging consisted of a single upper and lower shroud. In order to lessen mast pumping under sail and vibration at the mooring, forward lower shrouds were fitted in 1975. With deck-stepped masts, vibration in strong winds, even at anchor, is a frequent issue. Not all earlier Sabre 28s have had the extra set of lower shrouds installed. Make sure the forward lower shrouds have been attached if buying a pre-1975 model is on your mind.
An exterior lead casting with good fairing to the hull serves as the ballast keel. Keelboats can be accessed in the bilge for retightening as needed. The Sabre 28’s construction is robust without being excessively heavy. Nowhere in the project is there any indication of a rush to finish it.
Around this period, the deck-stepped rig was also improved. To prevent the mast from pumping excessively, front lower shrouds were installed, and the chainplate seals were modified. The standard keel’s draught was increased by 4 inches in 1982, the ballast was increased by 200 pounds, and the mainsheet traveler was relocated from the transom to the coachroof forward of the companionway (where it occasionally caused the mainsheet to argue with the helmsman’s head). These modifications increased the mast’s height from 41 feet to 43 feet and increased the sail area by 12 square feet.
The Bluewater Sailboat Sabre 28 gained a foredeck anchor well in 1976. The well has enough space to store the boat’s primary ground tackle in a sufficient amount. In boats constructed after 1982, it features provisions for fastening the end of the anchor rode.
The anchor well houses the water tank vent. This is a logical place for a thing whose placement is frequently an afterthought. Tank vents are frequently found in the topsides, right below the sheer. This can lead to sea water backsiphoning into fuel or freshwater tanks.
Movement on the deck in a seaway is made easier by heavy teak handrails and a highly effective nonskid surface that is moulded in. Due to the broad cabin trunk, the side decks must be narrow.
The Sabre 28’s cockpit is spacious and cosy. On a 28-foot boat, it has a cockpit that is safe for offshore sailing. Five people can easily fit in the cockpit with wheel steering. Lockers in the cockpit merit extra attention. The winch islands have two molded-in recesses that are perfect for holding tiny objects like sail stops and winch handles. Under each cockpit seat, there is a shallow lift-top locker, a deeper locker for the helmsman, and a deep store for the starboard passenger.
To prevent sails, fenders, and lines from migrating to the bilge, the deep starboard locker is bulkheaded off from the interior of the boat. The emergency tiller and companionway drop boards have built-in holders in this locker, along with a shelf set up for line storage. It’s one of the best-designed cockpit lockers we’ve seen, despite the lid being a little too narrow to remove sails with ease.
The companionway, in contrast, is a little underwhelming. The hole is strongly tapered, allowing the drop boards to be removed by lifting them only a little over an inch, although being appropriately small and having a good bridgedeck.
Early boats used 1/2′′ teak-faced plywood for the drop boards, while versions built after 1982 used solid teak. If the boards are not properly varnished, the exposed edge grain of the plywood core will soon turn grey. They might eventually delaminate.
A translucent smoked plexiglass companionway hatch cover is standard on newer yachts. fibreglass hatches are found in older boats. A lot of light can enter via the plexiglass hatch from below.
When tethered to the dock at night, it also allows dock users to look into the main cabin. Transparent hatches have a commonly overlooked corollary: if they let light in during the day, they also let it out at night. The helmsman’s night vision can be destroyed by the glare of a white light belowdecks. Although not widespread, the issue is nonetheless actual.
The Sabre 28’s belowdecks give off a spacious, organised, and well-finished vibe. Headroom in the main cabin is an honest 5′ 11″ and 6′ beneath the main hatch.
V berths with a filler that can be made into a double are in the forward cabin. Under the forward berths is where the 30-gallon moulded polyethylene water tank is situated. Under each berth, there is a drawer and a bin. The berth filler can be removed so that you can stand up comfortably and get dressed with the forward hatch open.
The full-width head is separated from the main cabin and forward cabin by doors. The 22-gallon storage tank was standard equipment on the Sabre 28. An optional Y-valve diverter was used.
The main cabin is spacious and appealing despite having several teak bulkheads and decor. Overhead, there are strong grab rails. A double berth is created by extending the port settee. The Sabre 28 has six beds when all berths are occupied. Six passengers on a 28-foot yacht is simply too many, even for a weekend. Four people can easily sit at a bulkhead-mounted fold-down cabin table. A screw-type hatch dog holds it in the folded position, which is a smart idea because a rattling table may be extremely distracting.
A quarterberth is to port and the galley is to starboard at the back of the main cabin. With four drawers and six closets, the storage in the galley is adequate.
Nearly under the companionway, somewhat off centre, is where you’ll find the galley sink. While the sink will drain on either tack from this point, caution must be given when going below when firmly heeled on the port tack to prevent tripping into the sink. Recessed Kenyon alcohol stove with two burners is the stove in the galley. This kind of stove poses a fire risk if the fuel tank is filled before the burners have sufficiently cooled down. These stoves feature inbuilt fuel tanks, and the fuel fill is situated between the burners.
The icebox is well insulated on boats built before 1982, with the exception of the top. Given that Sabre has taken extra precautions like installing an icebox pump to prevent ice melt from smelling up the bilge.
Plumbing, wiring, and all other finishing aspects are thoroughly thought out and impeccably done. The only exception to the typically well-planned installations is the positioning of the main electrical panel adjacent to the companionway, where it is exposed to spray.
Performance
This Bluewater Sailboat Sabre 28 may be readily operated by one or two people thanks to optional cockpit-led halyards, self-tailing headsail sheet winches, and wheel steering. The helmsman can easily access the mainsheet. Unfortunately, except on newer boats where the mainsheet was moved to the cabin roof in 1982, his head is also conveniently within reach of the mainsheet when jibing.
The headsail sheeting base of the boat is relatively narrow with the main chainplates situated well inboard, especially if the boat is outfitted with the optional inboard genoa track in addition to the conventional toerail-mounted genoa track. For instance, the sheeting base is almost a foot thinner than the Hunter 27’s. Due of this, the Sabre 28 can speak rather concisely.
She will move quickly in light air thanks to her huge genoa and comparatively tiny wetted surface.
Choose the regular keel model over the shoal keel unless the water in your cruising location is very thinly spread out. For windward work, the shoal keel offers a less effective lateral plane.
The size of the headsail that is employed will require some consideration. The Sabre 28 is not a particularly stiff boat, according to owners, despite the fact that she more than competes with other boats of her size and type. Although her PHRF rating shows merely ordinary performance when compared to similar cruiserracers, owners estimate her performance to be far above average. Owners who plan to race the Sabre 28 should conduct tests to determine whether the boat is faster on one tack than the other due to the off-center solid prop.
Quick Notes
This Bluewater Sailboat is a stylish, well-made, and well finished yacht. Although she costs more than the ordinary stock boat, her construction and finishing quality are likewise much above average. She has a contemporary underbody, yet her design and construction are traditional.
Neither an all-out racer nor an all-out cruiser, the Sabre 28 is a hybrid. She is an excellent compromise vessel, robust enough to sail with assurance and swift enough to avoid embarrassing situations.
She has a contemporary nice looks without being overly trendy. She is unlikely to win over the staunchest traditionalists or outright modernists. She is most appealing as a stylish coastal cruiser for a couple or a small family. The Sabre 25 is far from being an ugly duckling, despite the fact that she’s no Swan.

Designed to determine if a boat has blue water capability. The CSF compares beam with displacement since excess beam contributes to capsize and heavy displacement reduces capsize vulnerability. The boat is better suited for ocean passages (vs coastal cruising) if the result of the calculation is 2.0 or less.
The boat was a success, and over the next fifteen years, 588 Sabre 28's were built. The 28 was followed by the Sabre 34 in 1976, the Sabre 30 in 1979, the Sabre 38 in 1981 and the Sabre 32 and 36 in 1984.
The Sabre 28 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with extensive teak wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem , vertical transom , skeg -mounted rudder controlled by a ship's wheel and a swept fixed fin keel .
This stylish little pocket yacht is both the first and smallest boat ever produced by Sabre Yachts, a quality production boatbuilder based in southern Maine. Designed by the company’s founder, Roger Hewson, and introduced in 1971, the Sabre 28 was the only boat produced by Sabre until 1977.
