Corporate events

Anniversaries, bachelor / bachelorette parties, company parties, weekend outings, frequently asked questions, why the name summerwind.

The name Summerwind comes from the wonderful song, "Summer Wind", which has been sung by dozens of top artists, but made legendary by Frank Sinatra.

Following are the lyrics:

"The summer wind came blowin' in from across the sea. It lingered there so warm and fair to walk with me. All summer long, we sang a song and then we strolled on golden sand, two sweethearts and the summer wind. Like painted kites those days and nights, they went flyin' by. The world was new beneath a bright blue umbrella sky. Then softer than a piper man one day, it called to you, and I lost you, I lost you to the summer wind.

The autumn wind and the winter winds they have come, and they have gone. And still the days, those lonely days they go on and on. And guess who sighs his lullabies through nights that never end?

My fickle friend, the summer wind. The summer wind, the summer wind. The summer winds."

(Summer Wind is available on Apple Music).

What our customers say about us.

Sailing with Marty was my first experience as an adult sailing off the coast. We had a wonderful trip starting in St Augustine. First, we were given some basic information about the boat and safety, the other crew members and our destination. Then we were off. We sailed up to Amelia Island for most of the day and then docked at Fernandina Beach marina. We had a short walk into downtown and had a wonderful meal. It was also a great way to really get to know the other members of the crew. The next morning we set off and sailed north to Cumberland Island. Once on the island, we explored the ruins, had a nice hike and enjoyed dinner on the boat. The next step was amazing. We headed off into the sunset on the boat and sailed all night. It was truly exhilarating sailing through the night. At all times, I felt safe but the excitement got me hooked on sailing. Marty is honest, helpful, and always cheerful; exactly what you want in a captain.

This past summer my husband and I had an awesome time on Summerwind. The weather was warm so it was a great time sailing to downtown St Augustine and simply grabbing a mooring ball eating a yummy lunch with our family and diving off the back for a refreshing dip. The following day we took the boat several miles out in the ocean with all the sails up, music on in the cabin; a complete escape from work etc. At day’s end we sailed right up to Caps On The Water restaurant for my birthday where we enjoyed a seafood dinner and drinks. We can’t wait to plan another visit aboard Summerwind, It was a complete vacation over only a single weekend. Many thanks.

Sailing with Marty is truly a treat... He and his trusty Yacht are one with the mighty ocean. Years at sea and behind the helm show, and pay off in high seas or calm. But don't get too comfortable because he is always game to teach you the ropes and be sure you are part of the adventure. There is nothing more peaceful and fulfilling than a day at sea with Marty. Thanks for the memories!

We had such a peaceful experience taking in the joys of the sea while sailing with Marty. He was willing to let us take on roles to help sail the boat (and willing to let us fail, too!) We brought along our two little children (2.5 years and 10 months) and they enjoyed playing below deck and seeing the beautiful scenery sailing by. We were grateful for Marty’s expertise, generosity and passion for sailing!

I've sailed with Captain Marty several times and it was a joy. One of the trips was a longer sail from Puerto Rico to Saint Augustine, Florida in May, 2013. We had a great time and I felt totally comfortable with Marty as our Captain. His sailing and navigating experience made me feel very at ease while on the water - he is a safety conscious sailor. I would give the trip 5 stars!

Being a novice on boats, this was a very exciting time for me. Marty and the crew made me feel very comfortable aboard the Yacht. We sailed down the Cooper River, under the incredible Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and into Charleston Harbor. I enjoyed seeing the USS Yorktown and the submarines. The view of the city of Charleston and the historic homes was amazing! Marty is very knowledgeable about historic sites. Seeing Fort Sumter from the water was also a memorable experience. I would rate this sail as 5 stars

My family and I have sailed many times over the last ten years with Marty and his crews including wonderful afternoons off the coast of St. Augustine. We have had many fabulous overnight trips to places like Fernandina Beach and Cumberland Island. Summerwind is a beautiful Yacht and she sails like a dream. Some our family’s greatest moments have been sailing on Summerwind with the sails up on a beautiful day with gentle breezes moving along the ocean effortlessly. We strive to create lifelong memories with our family by having experiences together and a day on Summerwind is an unforgettable experience. We give Summerwind and the amazing crew 5 stars and can’t wait for our next sailing Adventure.

“The summer wind came blowing in from across the sea”

Summerwind , named in honor of the iconic song, offers deluxe charters aboard an elegant 50-foot sailboat made by Jeanneau. Summerwind's captain and crew are fully experienced sailors and provide day and overnight charters.

This modern yacht has a scooped transom and a cockpit that comfortably seats ten. The salon below seats six around the dining table and is adjacent to a fully equipped galley. There are three staterooms, including a spacious owner’s stateroom, two bathrooms (heads), and private showers. This ocean-equipped vessel is as comfortable on the inland waters off St. Augustine as it is on the Atlantic Ocean, allowing guests to choose a day sail for a picnic and swim or to sail overnight to new harbors.

“We strolled along the golden sand”

Sailing adventures can include time to anchor near a popular swimming spot where kayaks or a water swim platform can be enjoyed while the crew barbecues lunch or an early dinner. Charter guests may ask the captain and crew to take the boat through the St. Augustine Inlet for a sail along the Northeast Florida Coast.

Those guests who want to spend time at sea on an overnight adventure can book a trip to a harbor, such as the town of Fernandina Beach, where they can enjoy dinner on board or ashore at one of the many restaurants.

Summerwind is available for two-hour charters and for charters of two nights or more. Fun with family, a romantic weekend for two, engagement and wedding celebrations, and corporate retreats or reward trips are all available aboard Summerwind . Guests may choose among many options, including a catered meal prepared by an executive chef and private masseuse services.

The Captain and Crew

Captain Marty Tighe and his sons, Christopher and Brendan, lead the crew for all adventures aboard Summerwind . Marty has sailed across oceans, delivering sailboats. Now he is delighted to share his experience and love of sailing by offering adventures aboard Summerwind . His mission is to provide guests with the same experiences usually available only to those aboard their own yacht.

Summer Wind

Summer Wind

Historical Summary:

Summer wind history.

SUMMER WIND was built between 1938 and 1940 by the Astoria Shipyard in Astoria, Oregon for the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey (now part of NOAA).  According to the design criteria, she was to be large enough to be self-sufficient at sea for up to 6 months with a crew of 3 officers and 14 sailors and surveyors, yet small and maneuverable enough to enter small uncharted bays. She was commissioned to produce the first modern nautical charts of the Aleutian Islands, which required crossing some of the roughest and most inhospitable ocean in the world. Her design was featured in the 1942 version of the United States Hydrographic Manual

Although built to work, SUMMER WIND was given the lines of a classic fantail yacht. Her designer, H. C. Hanson, was said to be influenced in his early years by Ted Geary, a famous yacht designer who produced many classic fantail yachts of the 1920’s such as Thea Foss ,  Blue Peter , and Malibu .  Later Hansen designs were decidedly boxier and less graceful-looking.

Astoria Marine Construction used the finest materials and craftsmanship, including old growth fir planks up to 80 feet long, 8" x 8” oak frames, pressure treated lumber, monel fastenings, ironbark toerails and rubrails, and Burmese teak. After launching and commissioning, she was put into service just before and during World War II surveying the Aleutian Islands in the summer and working in Puget Sound in the winter. She completed a “wire drag” survey of Puget Sound in 1943 that generated data about depth and bottom contours that are still shown on charts today. Her work in the Aleutian Islands during World War II is shrouded in mystery due to the high level of security applied to the Aleutian battles now called the Thousand Mile War.

Throughout her military service, she was known as  E LESTER JONES , after a well-respected commander of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in the 1920’s.  E. Lester Jones was also one of the founders of the American Legion. For many years, a plaque hung in the pilothouse of the SUMMER WIND to commemorate this. Interestingly, a reference to this plaque shows up in Webster’s online dictionary under the definition of “plaque.”

After the war,  SUMMER WIND/E. LESTER JONES performed survey work in Puget Sound, the San Juans, and throughout Alaska as far north as Bristol Bay. Many of the bays and mountains in Southeast Alaska and the Anchorage area were named after her crew members’ relatives. She is also believed to have performed survey work in Hawaii and the Panama Canal. She was fitted with what was then the most modern electronics, including one of the first electronic depth sounders, and an early LORAN unit. Each winter was spent in Seattle at the NOAA dock on Lake Union with a full-time crew of three performing maintenance and upgrades. In 1971,  SUMMER WIND was surplused and sold at auction. In typical government fashion, the engines were completely rebuilt just prior to the sale. After a brief trip through Central America to Florida, she was purchased by local Seattleite Dave Updike, who returned her to Seattle and owned her for 20 years until his death. She was then purchased by her current owners, who have used her as a cruising yacht and home on Lake Union and Lake Washington since 1993.

Private Yacht Charter Updates & Safety Information

We are excited to get back to cruising and helping you plan an unforgettable private event on the water in Miami! As we resume rentals for all luxury vessels, please know that the health and well-being of our guests and crew members is our number one priority. We are closely monitoring the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as our local health departments and authorities on the best practices while operating. Our ample yachts feature multiple decks with indoor and outdoor spaces. We will continue to assess, refine, and update our standards to keep you safe as new information is available.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Social distancing.

  • Per current guidelines, our 60” round tables will be set six feet apart for six guests, as opposed to our previous ten, which will offer ample room and additional space between guests.
  • Our flow-through dining arrangement will allow us to control the number of guests in the dining area at any one time, as well as the flow to stations, which will limit lines and guest contact.

Employee Requirements

  • All employees are required to do a self-check prior to the start of their shift. All staff uniforms will adhere to CDC guidelines. This will include masks constantly and gloves while handling food that will be disinfected/changed for every event.

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • We will be providing hand sanitizing stations throughout the vessel, at boarding on the dock, on every deck, as well as near food and beverage areas.
  • We will have a specialized team thoroughly clean and disinfect key surfaces and areas before and after each event, with two hours specifically designated to ensure that this task is prioritized.
  • To maintain cleanliness throughout the event, cleaning specialists will be tasked with ongoing cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch and common areas, which include but are not limited to handrails, backs of chairs, doorknobs, bars, counters, high tops, low cocktail tables, coffee tables, bathroom sinks, toilet handles, etc. These tasks will be completed per the CDC and Miami-Dade County guidelines.
  • Our bathrooms feature ample individual stalls. These areas will fall into our 30-minute cleaning guidelines and will be maintained and serviced by our cleaning specialists. Bathrooms are equipped with disinfectant soap, hand sanitizers, and disposable hand towels.

Serving Procedures

  • Glassware, flatware, and tableware will be washed, disinfected, and steam cleaned before and throughout the event. Rolled up flatware and water glasses will be provided for each guest and presented individually at each place setting.
  • Welcome drinks are freshly poured upon boarding in sanitized glassware. To curb the need for congregating at the bar or making long lines, our staff will be providing cocktail service to all guests, as well as handing out welcome drinks.
  • All food and drinks will be handled, presented, and served to guests to minimize cross-contamination. Butler-passed hors d’oeuvres will no longer be passed. Instead they will be arranged as a station. All platters and food stations will be staffed with an attendant behind plexiglass who will be responsible for personally serving each guest.
  • Our new and improved buffet techniques will feature plexiglass to protect the food while guests are served by a gloved attendant. Tables will be called one at a time to prevent crowding. Our existing procedures will ensure that our buffet is staffed to serve guests individually and erase the need for self-service. This measure will prevent serving utensils from coming into contact with any guests.
  • Our bread, salad, coffee, and dessert will be served tableside, eliminating the need for self-service. Salt, pepper, and condiments will be individually packaged for each guest.
  • If additional steps are required, we are happy to provide them as requested.

LOA: 100' 9

Class/type: classic staysail schooner, builder: c.a. morse, thomaston, maine, designer: john gale alden (nshof hall of famer), launch date: 1929.

A classic staysail schooner was given a new lease on life by means of a complete structural and mechanical refit in 2008. With luxurious accommodations for 13 in seven cabins, she was originally built in 1929 and christened as QUEEN TYI for a wealthy Wall Street banker who reportedly lost the vessel in the stock market crash that same year.

SUMMERWIND was donated to the Naval Academy Foundation in 2015. She was officially commissioned on October 28 at the National Sailing Hall of Fame.

During World War II, she has served as a sub hunter in the coastal Picket Patrol off the coast of New England.

Watch the video documentary of the Picket Patrol - "The Hooligan Navy" in the NSHOF Film Library .

Later, after many years of racing and cruising in New England, she went into service as a charter boat in the Mediterranean. In 2006 she was purchased by Texas oilman J. Don Williamson and underwent a major multimillion dollar restoration. Shortly afterward she won the 2009 Newport Bucket Race.

Summerwind was the training vessel for the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY in for three years. In 2012 James Grundy bought her and brought the vessel to Oxford, Maryland, where both masts and booms were replaced with carbon fiber spars. In 2014 she won the Great Chesapeake Schooner Race.

In the fall of 2016 Grundy donated SUMMERWIND to the United States Naval Academy Foundation. She was officially commissioned in a ceremony that took place here at the National Sailing Hall of Fame.

Shipbuilders harness the wind to clean up global shipping

Find out more about our Reverse Course series  here .

If you need to move a dishwasher or a new TV from a factory in Asia to a store in California, a container ship is the cheapest way to do it.

These vessels are as long as several football fields and can carry tens of thousands of individual 20-foot containers. According to the United Nations, more than 11 billion tons of stuff was shipped by sea in 2021.

Container ships use heavy fuel oil called bunker fuel. They’re more efficient than trains, trucks and planes. But bunker fuel is highly polluting, and container ships produce about 3 % of the world’s emissions.

Shipping by sea wasn’t always this way. There was a time when boats used the power of the wind to ferry goods across the globe.

And today, as the world looks for ways to cut back on planet-warming emissions, some shipbuilders are traveling back in time to find a solution to a modern problem.

“Sometimes it’s actually better to use a simple system,” says Brad Vogel, a fellow at the Center for Post Carbon Logistics. “Wind moves a vessel. People have known that since Egyptian times.”

In the tropical forest of Costa Rica, a company called Sail Cargo is building a wooden cargo schooner from scratch.

At the shipyard, a short walk from the Pacific coast, piles of hardwood are scattered about like overturned matchsticks. Just on the other side of a towering white guanacaste tree, the frame of a 45-meter wooden sailboat comes into view.

“Some people say that it’s an art piece,” says Sail Cargo’s Alejandra Terán.

It’s a marvel to see a ship this size out of the water, perched on wooden blocks. The ship is a three-masted topsail schooner that looks like it came from another era. Its name is Ceiba, in honor of a tree that carries cultural significance in Latin America.

Work started in 2018, but the ship’s exterior still isn’t sheathed.

“So you can see all the ribs,” says Sail Cargo co-founder Lynx Guimond, the French-Canadian carpenter and sailor who is responsible for building it. “She looks like a big beached whale carcass, but beautifully crafted out of wood. Anybody who’s been a sailor knows your boat is a living being. It has its own soul.”

To get on board, Guimond climbs the steps of a wooden scaffold, past solid beams of tamarind and Spanish cedar harvested in the nearby jungle. For every tree used to build this ship, Sail Cargo plants 25 more.

Ceiba can carry 250 tons of freight — the equivalent of nine containers. It will transport “anything from coffee to cacao, to electric vehicles. Hopefully sustainable clients, but we can also ship tires or pineapples or whatever else,” Guimond says.

Work on the ship has paused while the company raises more money. With another $2 million and two years of work, Ceiba will be ready to sail, Guimond says. Sail Cargo already has a contract to move green coffee beans from Colombia to New Jersey — a journey that will take four days longer than a traditional container ship.

Electric batteries will give it a boost if the wind doesn’t blow.

There’s “incredible demand” for Ceiba’s services from companies that want an ecological solution to shipping goods around the world, Guimond says.

“Shipping is one of the most polluting elements on our planet today,” he says. “But we always say: ‘What’s the real cost of cheap shipping?’ We are paying for it with our planet.”

When ordering products to our doorsteps from far away countries, Guimond hopes a project like Ceiba will prompt people to ask: ‘Do you really need it?’

Momentum and headwinds

There are about a dozen commercial wind ships delivering freight around the world, and a handful of other high-profile projects under development , says Steven Woods, a U.S.-based sail-freight expert watching Ceiba’s progress with interest.

Wooden dhows have been navigating off the coast of Africa for centuries.

But Woods says Sail Cargo is the only company building a large wooden cargo schooner from scratch.

“I am a bit worried,” he says, “because they have been under construction since 2018, on a ship that a shipyard in Maine 100 years ago would have turned out in about six months.”

Woods says banks are reluctant to finance unique projects like this. Plus, there’s a shortage of skilled sailors and shipbuilders necessary for a robust global sail-freight industry.

In the 1970s, in response to the oil crisis, there was a similar interest in revitalizing wind-powered shipping. But when a 96-foot sailing vessel called the John F. Leavitt sank off the coast of New York in 1979 as a result of suspected negligence , “it sent the movement back decades,” Woods said.

In today’s climate-conscious era, he says that Sail Cargo creates a new opportunity.

“If they succeed, it’s fantastic,” says Woods. “They’ll be sailing right into New York. They’ll be seen by a huge number of people. That would be a huge kickstart to any of these types of projects.”

Sailing the Hudson River

There is one high-profile sail freight company in the United States.

On a warm April morning — at a shipyard near the Hudson River in Kingston, New York — Sam Merrett is slapping a fresh coat of paint on the Schooner Apollonia.

When the summer season gets underway, Capt. Merrett will sail the steel-sided Apollonia up and down the Hudson, carrying products like malted grain to local breweries on its way to New York City.

Captain Sam Merrett, (left) prepares the Schooner Apollonia for the upcoming season. The boat will sail up and down the Hudson River delivering cargo to ports between Kingston, New York, and New York City. The roundtrip journey takes about two weeks. (Samantha Raphelson/Here & Now)

“It takes us about a week to get down, and about a week to get up,” Merrett says. “So we’re kind of like leapfrogging down and then back up the Hudson River, picking up cargo and dropping off cargo almost every day.”

Just like Ceiba, the trip take longer and cost more than typical methods.

But without using trucks to move the products, the Apollonia offers a clean alternative that some businesses are eager to use.

“The whole idea is to actually get trucks and fossil fuels out of the equation,” Merrett says.

Most of Apollonia’s clients are right near the river, so the crew can use a bicycle and a trailer to move the cargo to its final destination.

The Apollonia has been sailing freight since 2020, and the economics are tough, says Merrett.

“Paying for fuel is cheaper than paying for people,” he says. “I need a crew of four to six. It’s more expensive to pay them a living wage than to just buy some fuel for a truck.”

Using wind to move container ships

Apollonia carries up to 10 tons of cargo, a fraction of what Ceiba will hold in Costa Rica, and infinitesimally small compared to the 11 billion tons of freight moved around the world in a year.

That’s why massive container ships are the focus of the International Maritime Organization. Last year, the IMO set a goal for the industry to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 . Just slowing the engines down saves energy. And even the biggest ships on the planet can use sails to catch the wind.

“They operate like airplane wings. They’re 37 meters high — absolutely ginormous,” says Lauren Eatwell, head of WindWings at BAR Technologies.

Pyxis Ocean retrofitted with WindWings setting sail for its maiden voyage, August 2023. (BAR Technologies)

The company has developed adjustable wings that can be placed on cargo vessels. Each wing saves a ton and a half of fuel every day and “that reduces the carbon footprint,” Eatwell says.

According to the IMO, about 30 large cargo vessels are using wind technology to reduce emissions, with more on the way. Eatwell believes future ships will use a combination of wind, clean fuels and sleeker hulls to meet climate goals. And despite the difference in scale, she says there is a role for smaller projects like Ceiba and the Schooner Apollonia.

“I love the move back toward sailing,” she says. “There are all kinds of different vessels and purposes out there. All of these technologies are needed.”

‘Best energies’ from nature

At the shipyard in Costa Rica, the Sail Cargo team is trying to finish one of those vessels.

With Ceiba’s frame looming in the distance, co-founder John Porras is banging away on a beat box that’s been made with left-over scraps of wood — part of the company’s ethos to build as sustainably as possible.

Outside Sail Cargo’s shipyard and headquarters in Punta Morales, Costa Rica. (Peter O’Dowd/Here & Now)

“The solution is here in Costa Rica,” he says, adding that the world is starting to understand that “the best energies [are] from nature.”

Sail Cargo still needs to raise the money to complete the ship, and the company is also looking for a new CEO after a recent turnover in leadership. But Porras and his team are undeterred.

“This project is so hard,” Porras says. “It’s the maximum goal to show the world how the industry can change. All the eyes of the country [are on] our project right now.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

sailing yacht summer wind

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

sailing yacht summer wind

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

sailing yacht summer wind

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

sailing yacht summer wind

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

sailing yacht summer wind

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

sailing yacht summer wind

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

sailing yacht summer wind

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Sudden weather change capsizes boats, leaves thousands without power

Nina Shapiro

It was so hot out when 14-year-old Adi Vannice arrived for a sailing regatta at Leschi Marina Saturday morning that she decided to forgo the wet suit she usually wore.

As it turned out, the wetsuit would have come in handy. When afternoon gusts blew through what had been a spectacularly sunny day, the Olympia teen’s sailing dinghy overturned.

“The water was really cold,” Vannice said.

While dinghies overturn all the time, this plunge into Lake Washington was more unpleasant. She and her sailing partner kind of “freaked out,” she said, as they struggled to right the boat. They couldn’t manage it in the cold and the wind. Their coaches finally came and got them.

In fact, so many other dinghies capsized at the regatta, which drew eight school teams from around the region, that day one of this two-day event ended early.

All around the region, the sudden change in the weather took a toll, catching paddle boarders and at least one other sailor off guard. Thousands of people in Seattle and near Snohomish also lost power.

In the morning and early afternoon, it felt like summer. The temperature reached 72 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport around 1 p.m., according to National Weather Service meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch. People flocked to parks and took to the water.

But by mid-afternoon, a cold front blew through. The temperature dropped below 60 degrees. Winds ranged from 30 to 40 mph in most of Western Washington and got even more powerful in select spots. On Whidbey Island, the winds got up to 52 mph.

The winds tapered down in a few hours. But before they did, they caused some havoc.

Near Seward Park, three paddle boarders were reported in distress about 3:30 p.m. A kayaker helped one paddle boarder to shore, and a boater helped another.

A third paddle boarder was about 300 feet offshore when Seattle fire crews arrived, according to spokesperson Kaila Lafferty. A Seattle Fire Department rescue swimmer swam to that paddle boarder, and with help from a nearby boat, brought that person to shore, too. No one was hurt, Lafferty said.

Around the same time, a small single-person sailboat capsized in Lake Washington between south Mercer Island and Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park in Renton. A jet skier helped that sailor to shore, said Katie Lewis, a spokesperson for Renton Regional Fire Authority. Lewis said the sailor was wearing a life vest and was uninjured.

Meanwhile, up to 11,000 people lost power in Seattle , primarily on the South End and in West Seattle, said Seattle City Light spokesperson Jenn Strang. While investigators were still determining the cause in the late afternoon, she said, “there is a strong assumption this was weather related.”

By around 8 p.m., the utility had restored power to all but 2,500 people.

More than 4,000 people lost power near Snohomish , most in a rural area known as Three Lakes. Tree limbs falling on power lines were the likely culprit, said Snohomish PUD spokesperson Aaron Swaney. At 8 p.m., about 800 people were still without power.

Cooler temperatures are expected to continue through Sunday, with a high of about 57 degrees and a few showers, but no strong winds.

That’s good news for Vannice, the Olympia teen, who planned to return to Leschi in the morning, ready to sail.
