tayana 42 sailboat

Vancouver 42 368

Robert Harris’ Vancouver designs have earned reputations over the years as reasonably performing, comfortable, and extremely seaworthy cutters for the serious cruiser. One of the most successful of them is the Tayana Vancouver 42.

Beginning in 1979, Ta Yang, one of Taiwan’s top yards, built (some might say overbuilt) about 200 Vancouver 42 hulls in solid fiberglass and polyester laminate, coring the decks with wood-block squares isolated with resin to minimize moisture retention. At hardware-mounting points, this layup was further reinforced. After 1985, the yard used isophthalic gelcoat to resist blistering and, after 1992, laminated the hulls with vinylester resin. The boat’s 11,800 pounds of ballast is in a single iron casting, encapsulated inside the keel’s thick walls.

About 130 of the Van 42s were built as aft-cockpit cruisers with two different house designs. About 70 have center cockpits. One buyer commissioned a pilothouse version from the factory, which subsequently built four more. Our Vancouver 42, Jubilee, is one of them, but the hull and sail plan are the same as on the standard aft-cockpit model. The pilothouse suits us well in our Lake Superior home waters.

While this 29,000-pound canoe-stern cutter with its long fin keel and skeg-hung rudder wouldn’t be a first choice for Wednesday-night racing, the boat’s tall stick, generous sail plan, and slippery underbody ensure respectable passagemaking times. The deep keel and round bilges hold plenty of cruising stores, not to mention 120 gallons of diesel in two black-iron tanks and 150 gallons of water in two stainless-steel tanks.

Van 42s came with a variety of engines; the most common was a 50-horsepower Perkins 4-108. These boats are a bit underpowered, and we repowered with a 75-horsepower turbocharged Yanmar. It moves the boat very well, but we probably would’ve been just as happy with the naturally aspirated 64-horsepower version of that engine. Most Van 42s were delivered with sturdy double-spreader Isomat spars, which were deck-stepped and heavily stayed. Harris’ unique diamond stay at the upper spreaders, supported by an aluminum arc, which some call the cowcatcher, eliminates the need for running backstays. It also distinguishes the boat in crowded anchorages.

Every Ta Yang boat is semicustom, and owners had much freedom in laying out the accommodations. Even bulkheads were movable. Most interiors were done in vertical spruce staving and teak trim, but several variations exist. Whatever the layout, the stunning quality of Ta Yang’s finish work is a constant.

Most Vancouver 42s were built in the 1980s, so systems may need attention. The black-iron fuel tanks can rust if their external paint is chipped. Happily, we’ve not had this problem with our 18-year-old boat. Hull/deck joints and serious blistering haven’t typically been issues, but some older boats have suffered corrosion on chainplates and their attachment bolts belowdecks.

Most Vancouver 42s were built with teak decks, which can allow water intrusion into the core. However, Ta Yang’s construction techniques have been among the best in the industry. Jubilee’s teak decks have given us no problems, but we did recently reseam them to ensure their integrity.

The Tayana Vancouver 42 is a well-built offshore cruiser with a cruising range, load-carrying capacity, and comfortable motion seldom found in boats under 45 feet today. Age and condition affect asking prices, which range from $80,000 to $180,000.

Bill and Judy Rohde are cruising aboard Jubilee from Lake Superior to the Bahamas.

Bluewater Sailboat – Tayana Vancouver 42

The famous offshore cruiser.

Collaboration between the renowned Taiwanese yard Ta Yang and the highly renowned designer Robert Harris produced the Bluewater Sailboat Tayana Vancouver 42. She was the first of “Vancouver” designs, including 27 and 36 footers, and came after the popular Tayana 37 design by Bob Perry.

Although production technically started in 1979 and continues now, it makes much more sense to focus on the brokerage market. She boasts three alternative deck layouts, a canoe stern, and sturdy teak woodwork. This 42-footer is a useful offshore cruiser that may be used to leave the dock and travel out to sea.

Ta Yang started off with the Perry-designed 37, but Tayana 42 established its reputation for exquisite teak interiors and high-quality craftsmanship. The first Vancouver 42 hulls were made in 1979, and roughly 200 have been produced overall.

Although not particularly prone, the early Tayanas from 1979 to 1985 do show a correlation with gelcoat blistering. After 1985, the yard changed the gelcoat to an isophthalic one to prevent blistering, and in 1992, vinylester resin was used to laminate the hulls. Ta Yang will create a new one if necessary, but they haven’t made one in a while.

The Tayana 42 has a deck-stepped rig, which is remarkable for a significant offshore boat of this era. At the very least, a spar stepped on a huge I-beam connected between frames when imagining a bluewater boat. Although correctly constructed deck and keel-stepped spars are equally safe. Meanwhile, Harris’ special diamond stay at the upper spreaders, known as the cowcatcher and supported by an aluminum arc, avoids the need for running backstays. Most have teak decks, complete with advantages and disadvantages. There is solid fiberglass in the hull. Plywood was used to core early decks, but balsa was used for later ones. A single cast iron insert coated in resin and located inside the fibreglass keel weighs 11,800 pounds as ballast. Although most of them have been repowered with 4-cylinder Yanmars typically ranging in power from 44 to 75 hp, these were not only overbuilt but also underpowered with 33 hp Yanmars.

There are three different deck layouts available: a center cockpit, a normal aft cockpit, and an aft cockpit with a pilothouse. About 130 of the 200 cockpits are at the rear, and the remaining 70 are located in the center. Cruisers value the central cockpit more due to the separate stateroom below. Considering that Ta Yang created these on a semi-custom basis, it is challenging to make generalizations regarding the inside arrangements.

There are other variations, such as three different stateroom arrangements, two heads with combined sink-shower areas, one head with a separate stall shower, a centerline island queen aft, swivel seats in the salon, etc. Even the bulkhead’s placement could change. The solid teak trim and spruce vertical slatting combine for an exceedingly fine interior, regardless of the configuration.

Now you can also precisely calculate the expenses related to boat ownership to make smart choices based on your budget and sailing needs. Use this bluewater Sailboat Calculator to explore different options and make the best decision.

 Performance

The Tayana sails unexpectedly well and has a more contemporary underbody than many of its competitor thanks to her fin keel. She has a 1,000-square-foot canvas double spreader main and cutter rig. She is a sturdy Bluewater sailboat with a heavy displacement of close to 30,000 pounds that can withstand bad weather, withstand gusts of 30 knots, and make forward motion. Particularly the aft cockpit models are rather dry thanks to the moderate overhang and prominent sheer that allow for a good deal of freeboard up ahead.

Quick Notes

Although modern models have undoubtedly been barrier coated, the early models from 1979 to 1985 are more prone to gelcoat blisters. They might have a less resistant to water saturation plywood cored deck. It is worthwhile to look closely at the teak decks. Black iron is sometimes used for fuel and water tanks (the majority use stainless steel water tanks and black iron for fuel), which makes them more prone to rust. On Taiwanese vessels from the late 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, subpar stainless steel is possible.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The Tayana Vancouver 42 was the result of a collaboration between the legendary Taiwanese yard Ta Yang and the equally well-known designer Robert Harris. She followed on the heels of the prolific Tayana 37 design by Bob Perry and was one of a series of “Vancouver” designs including 27 and 36 footers. Production started in 1979 and ostensibly continues to this day though it makes much more sense to look at the brokerage market. She has a canoe stern, solid teak joinery, and three different deck plans. This 42-footer is a practical, offshore cruiser on which to cut the dock lines and head for the horizon.

Ta Yang made their bones with the Perry designed 37, but Tayana 42 solidified their reputation for quality construction and fine teak interiors. Production started in 1979 and in total about 200 Vancouver 42 hulls have been built. The early Tayanas, from 1979 until 1985 while not overly prone, do have an association will gelcoat blistering. After 1985, the yard switched to an isophthalic gelcoat to resist blistering and, after 1992, laminated the hulls with vinylester resin. Though Ta Yang will make a new one if you want, they have not produced one in some years.

Boat Configuration

The deck configuration comes in three versions – pilothouse aft cockpit, regular aft cockpit, and a center cockpit. Of the 200 about 130 are aft cockpits while the other 70 are center cockpits. The center cockpit is more prized by cruisers for the separate stateroom down below. It is hard to generalize about the interior accommodations because, Ta Yang produced these on a semi-custom basis. Variations include three staterooms layouts, one head with a separate stall shower, two heads with combined sink-shower spaces, a centerline island queen aft, swivel chairs in the saloon, etc. Even the bulkhead positioning could vary. No matter the layout, across the board, the spruce vertical slatting and solid teak trim makes for an exceptionally fine interior.

Construction

Oddly for a serious offshore boat of this vintage, the Tayana 42 features a deck-stepped rig. At least when I think of a bluewater boat I think of a spar stepped on a massive I-beam tied between frames. Though I know there is no difference in safety between properly engineered deck and keel stepped spars. As well Harris’ unique diamond stay at the upper spreaders, supported by an aluminum arc, which some call the cowcatcher, eliminates the need for running backstays. Most have teak decks with all the benifits and pitfalls. The hull is of solid fiberglass. Early decks were cored with plywood while later ones are balsa. The 11,800 pound ballast is a single cast iron insert encapsulated in resin inside the fiberglass keel. These were not only overbuilt but also underpowered with 33hp Yanmars though most have been repowered with 4-cylinder Yanmars generally in the range of 44hp to 75hp.

With her fin keel the Tayana has a more modern underbody than many comparables and sails surprisingly well. She has a double spreader main and cutter rig for 1,000 square feet of canvas. Combined with her heavy displacement of near 30,000 pounds, she is a stout boat that can handle heavy weather, shake off 30 knot winds and make good progress. There is a pronounced sheer for a fair bit of freeboard up forward and a moderate overhang that makes especially the aft cockpit versions pretty dry.

Buyers Notes

The earliest models from 1979 to 1985 are more prone to gelcoat blistering though these days have probably been barrier coated. They may have a plywood cored deck that is less resilient to water saturation. The teak decks are worthwhile to take a close look at. On a few examples fuel and water tankage is of black iron (most have stainless steel water tanks and black iron for fuel), these tanks and more susceptible to rust. Shoddy stainless steel is possible on Taiwanese boats of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
