Manufacturer

Hop aboard a present day motor sailer and you wouldn’t know it, but this genre, over time, has truly evolved. Rewind back to the late 1960s and, one might remember how fiberglass construction began refashioning the face of boat manufacturing and design. Motor sailers were almost always long keeled, heavy displacement vessels with humble sail plans. As time progressed, builders added size to the rigs for upgraded performance. In addition, hull shapes improved to offer superior handling characteristics while sailing.

The motor sailer is known for its devoted followers —thanks to this very evolution too. They especially love the vessel’s sheltered steering position with its 360 degree view. Let’s not forget the lure of a big engine that powers the boat to get moving quicker than the sails.

When narrowing it down to a special style motor sailer, it’s important to review priorities as the majority of the time when designing this type boat, you’ll find it calls for a plethora of compromises. So get your priorities in order…then… select the model that matches all of your leading criteria.

Let’s start with recommending a ketch rig where the easy to handle mizzen offers a noticeable stabilizing effect —when under power— without having to set the mainsail. One is able to even sail it with just mizzen and headsail in strong winds —another point in the easy handling category. And, when anchored, the mizzen can be kept set, and the boat lying head to wind, greatly rising the comfort bar aboard along with prohibiting the boat from sheering around in high wind weather.

Next we have the shift from the traditional long keels, that offered great directional stability at sea, but were less responsive when under sail and were a challenge to maneuver in the harbour, to select modern designs having lifting keels, allowing for access to a far-reaching range of harbours, or bilge keels, which - at low tide - grants the boat the ability to dry out upright.

The motor sailer wheelhouse, is a great option, making steering a breeze in bad weather. For those night cruises, a small wheelhouses - separate from the boat’s accommodations, allows you the advantage of the area to be kept dark for keeping an effective lookout. Another advantage is that when moored, an owner will appreciate it’s value of a tremendous 360 degree view around the boat. We recommend selecting a model that offers a spacious seating area for a deck salon opportunity.

Why are motor sailing yachts becoming more popular these days? Mostly… because it just makes sense. And in addition to the sheer fun of sailing, motor sailer enthusiasts will brag about it’s propulsion backup and efficiency, roll reduction, not to mention the amazing synergy of engaging two simultaneous modes of propulsion! One may even be thrilled to save the cost of a get-home or second main engine and shift the funds into investing in a good sailing rig.

The ideal motor-sailer should be 100% sailing vessel, and 100% power vessel. Mainly motoring, then turn on the fueled engine. Of course, the same holds true for those looking to utilize her primarily as a sailing yacht. The vessel’s design is known to be given a higher bow for those days when powering into the weather is the choice. Another tip, is to ensure your choice offers sufficient beam to provide for good sail carrying power, but not too much more. The owner who wishes to focus more on the powering portion of this boat will look for a "powerboat-type" layout, but don’t forget a modest "get-home" sail rig will be well loved too. The combo offers the guests the lull a good sail brings on providing the wind cooperates. There’s nothing like the peace of mind knowing the guests will never have the disappointment of a mechanical failure and their voyage will always be safe at sea.

Let’s talk performance with these beauties… A magnificent synergy between motoring and sailing gives its owner something that would never be achieved exclusively with power OR solely sail. One will be surprised with the speed boost that’s embraced by this beautiful marriage of the two. Start out on a motor-sailing voyage and expect a mere 3 knots of fuel to get you a whopping 7 to 10 knots of boat speed!

This can only be said for those days that mother nature sends the right winds to allow for this type sailing cruise. On that perfect day of wind, when looking for zero cost in fuel, and less of a rush to get to your destination of choice, set sail and leave the motors off! You’ll want to use your savings on those tropical drinks and fancy fish dinner at the exclusive island hot spot anyways! So start those engines and get the sail rigged right and you’re off for a journey that is sweet in many ways!

Why motor sailing is good seamanship

Pete Goss

  • July 12, 2020

Pete Goss looks at the times it can pay to switch on the engine, making life easier and allowing for better sailing

yacht motor sail

While the purist may want to avoid using the engine, knowing when to fire it up can make all the difference to a successful cruise

Fortunately, even for the racers out there competing in the Vendée Globe, engines are now mandatory, so that everyone shares the benefits without compromising competition.

In my younger days a similarly narrow focus had me marvelling as French cruisers sculled in and out of marinas. I was subsequently disappointed to learn that they weren’t purists at all; they were driven, instead, by tax. An unintended consequence was that it elevated French seamanship to another level.

Objectively there are far broader benefits to having an engine than the interests of speed, cost and drag to sailing. I would always have one but why do we often feel a sense of guilty failure when we turn it on, or admit to using it in the bar?

Perhaps it is a throwback to when smoke-billowing steam ships swept the purity, romance and majesty of clippers from our oceans. Lingering shame would have been given short shrift during Raphael Dinelli’s rescue in the Southern Ocean if I had been able to magic an engine on board.

Fortunately, my boat-handling skills, polished by having to sail in and out of marinas with fee-paying guests, saved the day.

yacht motor sail

Combining sail and engine power can stabilise the boat, punch through steep chop or make a crucial tidal gate

Manoeuvring under sail

Perhaps we should review our relationship and not allow an engine to become a cuckoo that elbows boat handling under sail from the nest. Switching on the engine needn’t preclude the pleasure found in good boat handling under sail – it is an essential skill that can be honed with the engine in neutral.

To an extent, running the engine can encourage us to take on manoeuvres that we might not otherwise, laying ready to reverse us out of mistakes and grasping a priceless lesson without the butcher’s bill of a collision to pay for it.

There is nothing more satisfying than nailing it under sail and as with all things in life, practice makes perfect. In fact, there is one thing more satisfying and that is to offer it to the crew and watch them grow in stature as their skills develop.

Skills that might one day save your life should you fall over the side. Again, this is made all the better as a learning experience with the engine on, reducing stress for all concerned.

The Best Outboard Motor for a Sailboat

best-outboard-motor-for-a-sailboat

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

The technology of sailing has remained mostly unchanged for centuries. Since learning to harness the power of wind, sailors have been transiting the world’s oceans, expanding trade routes and exploring new cultures. Although nothing more than a renewable natural resource and a single sail is needed to move a sailboat along the water, there are times when it’s important (and in our modern age, convenient) to leverage off a motor to get you where you need to go.

Like any unique piece of equipment in the world of sailing, outboard motors come in a variety of sizes with features and options to fit any owner’s needs. But of course, one size doesn’t fit all. Every boat is different – even those that come off the production line at the same time – and every owner is looking for something specific when it comes to their sailboat. From the purpose of owning the boat (blue water sailing vs. racing) to the location and impact on maintenance (cold weather vs. tropical weather), an outboard motor is just one of the many elements that will define a sailboat’s function and performance.

Whether you’re a new owner, or a veteran sailor, it’s important to know the basic components of any outboard motor . You should also have an idea of what you want your outboard motor to do for your size and model sailboat.

Table of contents

Outboard Motor Size

A larger boat doesn’t necessarily mean a larger motor. Although there are different ratings for different classes of boats, a small power plant can be more effective than a larger one. Conversely, an outboard motor can easily overpower a small boat and create unsafe conditions at high speeds. Guidelines and requirements differ between motorboats and sailboats. And while there is some overlap, these considerations apply directly to sailboats.

Engine power has to do with how much water a boat displaces. For sailboats, smaller is better. If you’re a bit of a math geek, the exact formula is 4 horsepower for every 2200lb of weight. Coupled with a propeller size, which can be determined using a propeller calculator , you’ll get a rough estimate to use as a guideline to start shopping. This is a good first step, since size is essentially a fixed variable. Though it’s worth noting for those who are buying a sailboat directly from the manufacturer, that actual weight will increase after delivery – once all other rigging and outfitting has been completed.

Physical size of your outboard motor is an important consideration and is directly related to the design of your sailboat. An outboard motor is made up of three parts from top to bottom:

  • The Powerhead – Houses the engine. The bulbous part of the motor.
  • The Midsection – Houses the exhaust system. Varies in length and design.
  • The Lower Unit – Propellers attach to the gearbox. Submerged when operational.

Shaft length is an important design element and should be considered when purchasing a motor. A shaft that is too short will obviously prevent the propeller from being submerged in water, while a shaft that is too long will extend the propellers too far. Not only will it decrease the efficiency of your engine, it will create unnecessary drag. Know your transom length when looking at different models.

When an outboard motor is not being used, it should be stowed in its upright position. Some of the larger motors have an automated switch that will raise it out of the water, but some must be secured manually. Make sure everyone who sails with you is capable of lifting and securing the motor out of the water in case of an emergency.

Outboard Motor Power

Any kind of motor installed on a sailboat (inboard or outboard) should be viewed as a tool to help with maneuvering. Although there are some very skilled sailors out there who can sail into their slip without the aid of a motor, many harbors have restrictions that either don’t allow for the use of full sails, or there simply isn’t enough room to maneuver. A motor with both forward and reverse gears helps tremendously with docking.

While there is no exact correlation between boat length and total weight, the following is a rough guideline:

  • 1-4 HP for boats up to 20’ (approximately 1000-2000lbs)
  • 4-18 HP for boats between 20-30’ (approximately 2,000-10,000lbs)
  • 18-34 HP for boats between 30-40’ (10,000lbs or more)

There are some things to consider when deciding how much horsepower you need or want. Location and the type of conditions you expect you’ll be sailing in is one of the biggest factors. Heavy seas and high winds typically associated with open ocean sailing will put more strain on your engine, and in some cases overpower it, whereas an engine that is heavier than needed will add unnecessary weight when racing. If you plan on motoring for long distances, consider purchasing an engine that will stand up to a lot of use.

Less HP is required for:

  • Boat Design – Single hull boats made out of fiberglass require less power.
  • 2-Stroke Engines – This is due to an overall lighter weight engine and higher torque.
  • Diesel Engines – Diesel delivers more torque because the rate of compression is greater.
  • Bigger Propellers – More surface area means more water displacement.
  • Location – Motoring on lakes and rivers requires less power than open ocean.
  • Distance – A smaller engine is suitable for shorter distances.

More HP is required for:

  • Boat Design – Catamarans and heavier boats (regardless of size) require more power.
  • 4-Stroke Engine – Engine weight and an extra step of compression yields less power.
  • Gas Engines – The rate of compression for gas engines is much lower than diesel.
  • Smaller Propeller – A smaller propeller displaces less water.
  • Location – Open ocean, with tides and currents, will strain a smaller engine.
  • Distance – Cover more distance when wind conditions are poor requires a larger engine.

Outboard Motor Cost

There is no way to quantify how much you will pay for any given motor. But there are several costs associated with owning an outboard motor that are definitely worth considering when making your purchase.

Certainly, a lager, more-powerful engine is going to be costlier than a smaller engine with lower horsepower. But as mentioned earlier, size is not necessarily a guarantee of performance and efficiency. At the same time, there’s only so much you can get out of an engine before you exceed its capability. Larger engines tend to help with resale value should you choose to sell your boat at some point, but a boat outfitted with right motor to begin with will always perform better than a motor that’s large just for the sake of it.

Factor in maintenance costs and fuel when looking at models. You want to run your engine at around 90% of its max RPMs to balance proper fuel usage and with wear and tear. Making a few calls to marine mechanics to inquire about an engine you’re interested in will give you a lot of information a sales person won’t be able to give you. The good news about outboard motors is that most of them are portable, which means you won’t have the added cost of either paying a mechanic to come to you, or having to get your boat to the yard, which usually requires help from a very good friend willing to spend all day driving and sailing back and forth.

Owning a boat requires constant care and maintenance, so a little knowledge goes a long way. While an outboard motor is not required for sailing, it’s a convenient addition that can greatly increase your enjoyment out on the water. Being patient and spending time researching engines will not only help you make the correct purchase but will help you take advantage of a great deal when it presents itself. Whether you sail the Caribbean, or race off the coast of California in a catamaran, there is an outboard motor that’s just right for you.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht motor sail

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht motor sail

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht motor sail

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht motor sail

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht motor sail

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht motor sail

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht motor sail

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

The Army—Yes, the Army—Is Sailing a Fleet to Build a Port Off Gaza

Soldiers and ships unite on a mission to deliver aid through maritime prowess.

  • Several U.S. Army ships have set sail for the Eastern Mediterranean in support of a relief mission.
  • The Frank Besson will set up a pier off the coast of Gaza to help provide civilians with humanitarian aid.
  • The ships are part of a little known Army capability, called Joint Logistics Over The Shore.

Army Anchors Aweigh

On Thursday, March 7th, during his annual State of the Union address, President Joe Biden ordered the Pentagon to begin a humanitarian aid effort directed at civilians in Gaza. On Saturday, just 36 hours after the order was given the first ship, USAV General Frank S. Besson departed Fort Eustis, Virginia. On March 12th, four more ships departed Eustis—the Monterrey , Matamoros , SP4 James A. Loux, and Wilson Wharf .

According to USNI News , the Navy is also sending Naval Beach Group 1 and the M/V Benavidez —a roll-on, roll-off transport ship that will carry floating pier modules. Altogether, the effort will involve about 1,000 U.S. military personnel, including 500 soldiers from the 7th Brigade.

The distance from Virginia to Gaza is approximately 6,000 miles, and the Army ships are not exactly fast, with a maximum average speed of about 12 knots. It will take about 25 days for the flotilla to reach Gaza.

The Army/Navy task force is tasked with building a 1,800 foot long floating pier from the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean to shore. Exactly where the Army will build the pier right now is an open question, as President Biden stated the military would not enter Israel. The Israeli military currently controls much of Gaza’s coastline. Pentagon planners have likely ruled out areas not controlled by Israel, which would be (by default) controlled by Hamas.

Once the issue is settled, the 7th Brigade will set about constructing what the Army calls a Trident Pier. A Trident Pier consists of several floating sections that are attached to one another and secured in place with anchors. The pier forms both a port for ships to anchor and a drivable road to shore. This allows ground vehicles such as tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles , and trucks to drive directly off a ship like the Benavidez onto the pier, and from the pier to shore.

In the case of Gaza, ships laden with supplies will dock at the Trident Pier and load supplies directly onto aid trucks. According to the Army , once completed, the pier will be able to facilitate the transfer of up to two million humanitarian meals a day. Due to the level of violence in the area and the possibility of attack, U.S. military personnel will not be allowed to go ashore. The pier should be operational within 60 days of the President giving the order.

a man saluting on a ship

The 7th Transportation Brigade belongs to XVIII Airborne Corps, the Army’s worldwide crisis response force. In the event of war, the Corps needs the ability to seize or build logistics assets to facilitate the flow of more troops , more equipment, and more supplies. The 82nd Airborne Division is available to seize airfields, while the U.S. Marine Corps would likely be tasked with seizing enemy ports.

In the event there are no ports , the 7th Brigade would be tasked to build them. This is called Joint Logistics Over The Shore (JLOTS) in Pentagon-speak—the ability to form a ship-ready pier where there is none.

The Army frequently deploys JLOTS overseas on training exercises—in South Korea in 2015 and 2017, Kuwait and the UAE in 2020, and Australia in 2023 for Exercise Talisman Sabre. This mission won’t be the first use of a Trident Pier for humanitarian assistance, either. In 2010, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, JLOTS was used to build a temporary pier to handle the flow of international aid to the island country.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.

EJET Eco-Friendly Electric Motor & Drivetrain Yacht Tenders: New Model Announced

Boat engineering and design company EJET Electric Yacht Tenders has announced the development of its latest electric motor 9X yacht tender model.

yacht motor sail

Ljubljana, Slovenia - March 21, 2024 —

Much like their highly acclaimed 4X tender, the upcoming 9X model sports EJET’s proprietary electric motor and drivetrain, going in line with founder Žiga Jarc’s mission of providing sustainable transportation options for yacht owners and guests. Both models will be available in the summer, with the 9X build slated for initial testing in July.

For more information, please visit https://ejet.co/

The announcement follows EJET’s recent appearance at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show. Having received the International Boat Industry’s Rising Star Award, the company revealed the development of its larger 9X model with the aim of promoting environmental responsibility within the boating industry.

Designed to be lightweight and compact without sacrificing output or speed, the new tender will be powered by a 220 kWh battery and a 300 kW motor, with an option to upgrade to 340 kW, ensuring 98% efficiency and making it suitable for sports such as water skiing. The boat’s V-shaped hull has been adjusted to accommodate EJET’s custom electric powertrain and is capable of withstanding turbulent waters and inclement weather conditions. Each boat is built with standard hydraulic steering mechanisms, along with the company’s military-grade jet system, allowing for easy maneuvering, reversing, and sudden stops in both low- and high-speed scenarios.

The 9X model will also feature a digital interface, which boaters will be able to use to select different driving modes and dynamics, view real-time GPS navigation and system data, and access the smart audio Bluetooth system. Additionally, amenities such as a hydraulic bathing platform, an electric grill, an ice maker, and a refrigerator will all be available as upgrade options for all 9X tenders.

About EJET Electric Yacht Tenders

Founded in 2016 by Žiga Jarc, EJET began with the goal of developing a zero-emissions electric yacht tender that did not compromise performance or safety. The company has since become a pioneer in electric propulsion systems and remains committed to future innovations in the boating industry. EJET tenders are currently the only products on the market with custom electric drivetrains.

EJET Electric Yacht Tenders, under the leadership of founder Žiga Jarc, is actively engaged in the development of its proprietary electric propulsion technology. The initiative is part of the company's broader commitment to innovation in high-performance, long-range powertrain technology for the marine industry. This effort underscores EJET's focus on delivering solutions characterized by their lightweight and compact design, high power output, and exceptional motor efficiency of up to 98%. With a specific emphasis on extending battery life, the company aims to set new benchmarks for what is achievable in electric propulsion within the boating sector.

“We built the company and the brand on three pillars: driver-centric experience, sustainability with clean electric power, and advanced electric propulsion technology,” says Ziga Jarc. “We cooperate with the best nautical partners to create unforgettable experiences for our customers.”

Racing yacht runs aground at Lyttelton days before Sail GP regatta

A 12m racing yacht has beached in Lyttelton Harbour days before Christchurch hosts the glitzy international Sail GP regatta.

The Harbourmaster’s Office at Environment Canterbury said it was notified of a recreational vessel aground near Pāua-o-Hinekotau Head, west of Te Waipapa/Diamond Harbour on Wednesday evening.

“All five crew were rescued by the Coastguard and returned safely to Lyttelton [on Wednesday] night,” said Environment Canterbury’s regional on-scene commander, Emma Parr.

The racing yacht remains aground at the base of a cliff with difficult access by foot.

The yacht has 15 litres of diesel on board, in sealed tanks, but Parr says the risk of environmental damage from its grounding is low.

“Weather conditions are not favourable today, which means that a safe recovery attempt may not be possible prior to SailGP,” she said.

Around 22,000 people are expected to flock to Lyttelton over this weekend to watch the Sail GP event.

Lyttelton Port was closed overnight as a precaution due to the vessel being unsecured and the potential of floating debris.

“The yacht has remained in the same position but is significantly damaged. It is now secure via ropes to the shore,” she said.

Environment Canterbury says it’s monitoring the situation closely and working with the owner, insurers and salvors to collect debris as required.

“There may be loose debris under the surface of the water. We are asking the public to stay well clear of this operational area,” Parr said.

The international sailing competition set for Lyttelton Habour this weekend, SailGP , will still go ahead as planned.

The grounding comes after a clam fishing trawler ran aground on Waikuku Beach on Monday.

Maritime NZ sent investigations staff to the scene to start inquiries. The investigation into the grounding is ongoing.

The Herald understands the boat has since been moved back into the water without any damage.
