Best Cruising Catamarans

Cruising catamarans have been around for decades, but early models—often plywood and fiberglass vessels built by their owners from plans and kits, kept the boats on the fringes of mainstream sailing. That all changed, though, as big roomy cats were discovered by sailors who went off to charter in the Caribbean, where the multihulls proved their worth as comfortable liveaboard and party boats.

Today’s bluewater catamarans roam the globe, carrying families to exotic destinations across the Pacific and beyond. Just as with their monohull cousins, there is no best catamaran. Instead there is a wide variety of designs, ranging from small catamarans that offer the ease of maintenance a couple might enjoy to performance catamarans capable of easily knocking off 250-mile days. Today, the best catamaran brands offer a range of size models and layouts that can be optimized for an owner sailing with family and friends, or for the charter market, where there’s a demand for four, five and even six cabins worth of accommodations.

The most prolific catamaran manufacturers are in France and South Africa where yards include both large-run production builders and niche companies building fewer than 10 boats a year.

The best cruising catamarans offer good load-carrying ability and respectable performance. As with any sailboat , a modern catamaran’s design is a result of compromises. Daggerboards or keels? Galley up or galley down? Spacious owner’s cabin or extra bunks? There are lots of options to choose from—and that’s what makes looking at these sailboats fun!

Here, then is an eclectic A to Z list of some of the best catamarans that have helped shaped the evolution of how we live and sail on two hulls.

Antares 44i

Now built in Argentina as a full-fledged, bluewater catamaran and cruiser that can be safely operated by a shorthanded couple or family crew, the Antares 44i features a fully covered cockpit with a quartet of big, standard solar panels recessed within the hardtop, one example of a yacht capable of long-range passagemaking.

Atlantic 42

Almost 30 years ago, yacht designer Chris White revolutionized catamaran design with the first in his series of Atlantic cats, the primary feature of which was the innovative mid-ship sailing cockpit forward of the main cabin. The smallest in the Atlantic line, the 42 remains White’s most popular design ever.

Fountaine-Pajot has built so many outstanding cruising catamarans that it’s difficult to narrow down any single boat, but we’ve always been fans of the good-looking, well-thought-out Bahia 46. At 46 feet, the boat is large enough for offshore forays and has plenty of volume; with its simple but powerful sail plan, it’s also an excellent performer.

Beginning around 1996, the French builder Catana was one of the first companies to manufacture fully found cruising cats for private ownership, and this Christophe Barreau design, which enjoyed a nearly 10-year production run from 1997-2006, was emblematic of this first generation of safe, fun, long-legged offshore voyagers.

Catana now infuses the laminates of their entire production line with carbon fiber, and for this list, we’ve chosen the Catana 50 Carbon, one of the zippiest cats now crossing oceans.

Gemini 105M

Pioneering catamaran sailor, builder and designer Tony Smith launched the first of his 33-foot Gemini 105M’s (10.5 meters = 33′) in 1993, and soon after found a ready and willing stream of sailors enamored of the boat’s compact size, affordable price tag, and such innovations as the nifty lifting rudder and transom steps.

Built between 2000-2005, the Gunboat 62 firmly established the Gunboat brand: go-anywhere cats that applied race-boat technology to a world-cruising platform. Hull no. 1, Tribe, was built for company founder Peter Johnstone, who then spent a year-and-a-half cruising with his family, smiling all the way.

French builder Henri Wauquiez is best known for his long career building monohulls, but the Kronos 45 cat, which he launched in 1992, was ahead of her time. Classic lines, the aft “targa bar” over the cockpit, the louvered coach roof windows, even the distinctive stripes on her hull: the Kronos 45 remains timeless.

No roundup of cruising cats would be complete without several Lagoon entries, and the best of that impressive bunch might well be the Lagoon 380. Originally launched in 1999, and revered for its combination of quality, volume and performance, with over 740 boats built the 380 is still going strong.

Launched five years after the breakthrough 380, the Lagoon 440 was an evolutionary design that featured a raised flybridge helm station, a unique “gullwing” configuration below the bridge deck, expanded windows in the hull and much more. With 400 boats built in a 6-year production run, the 440 was an unqualified success.

How big can a production cat, still operable by a short-handed crew, really be? The builders at Lagoon discovered that 62-feet hit a sweet spot in the marketplace, and have sold over 70 boats since its introduction in 2010. The centerpiece of this design is the sensational steering station atop the flybridge, with expansive views of the sea and sky.

With an unmatched pedigree – designed by premier multihull naval architects Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, built by the prestigious Robertson & Caine boatyard in South Africa, and commissioned by chartering giant The Moorings – the Leopard 40 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cruising World ’s Import Boat of the Year in 2005.

Louisiane 37

Based on the famous French racing cat Charente-Maritime, the Louisiane 37, designed by Joubert/Nivelt and launched by builder Fountaine-Pajot in 1983, was a light, fast liveaboard cruiser with full accommodations that represented a radical departure from the hefty British cats that preceded it.

Maine Cat 30

One of the more versatile and clever cats ever created, the central feature of the cool Maine Cat 30 is the open bridge deck/living room sandwiched between the hulls and canopied by a rigid, permanent hard top (the comfortable accommodations/ staterooms are stationed in the hulls). Ideal for a winter in the Bahamas but with the ability to sail offshore, it’s a boat for all seasons and reasons.

Built in Florida and beloved by the owners of the over 120 boats built during the company’s existence from 1993 to 2009, the Manta Catamarans range included 38-, 40- and 44-foot cats. For this exercise, however, we’re heralding the original Manta 42, which won the Best Value Overall prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year contest.

Moorings 4800/Leopard 48

Another Leopard/Moorings collaboration built by the wizards at Robertson & Caine (though this boat was designed by fellow South African Alex Simonis), the Leopard 48 was another CW Boat of the Year winner with all the contemporary bells and whistles: forward cockpit, flybridge helm station and solid hardtop dodger, just to name a few.

Nautitech 441

The Best Multihull Under 45 Feet: So said the CW judging panel in the 2013 Boat of the Year competition, regarding the Nautitech 441. But what makes this versatile platform so intriguing are the different helm set-ups. The 441 employs a single wheel, to starboard, ideal for solo sailors, while the 442 has a pair of helm stations aft.

Outremer 5X

A state-of-the-art all-oceans cat that exemplifies how far multihull design has come, the 59-foot Outremer 5X was a winner on both sides of the Atlantic, taking top honors in the European Boat of the Year competition in 2013, and following up as the Best Full-Size Multihull in CW ’s contest a year later.

St. Francis 50

The flagship of the proud St. Francis line – built in South Africa since 1990 to designs by local legends Lavranos Marine Design – the St. Francis 50 is another “luxury cat” that shares much in common with an earlier 48-foot sister-ship, but packs even more payload into its roomier lines.

Seawind 1000

Founded by Aussie surfer and sailor Richard Ward in 1982, the 33-foot Seawind 1000 is easily the most popular cruising cat ever built in Australia (the company has since moved its manufacturing and management operations to Vietnam). Roomy and airy, these cats dot the coastline of eastern Oz.

Seawind 1160

If the Seawind 1000 was a minimalist approach to cruising cats, the 38-foot Seawind 1160 is the flip side of the coin, a full-fledged long-range voyager. Among the reasons it was named CW ’s Most Innovative boat for 2007 is the unique “tri-folding” door that stashes overhead to open up the saloon and cockpit into a spacious living area.

Sunsail 384

Every sailboat is a compromise, and in the case of the Sunsail 384 (also sold privately as the Leopard 38) that’s a good thing, because designers Morrelli & Melvin and builder Robertson and Caine got the balance just right with this relatively small catamaran. With four cabins, the 384 can carry the same size bareboat charter crowd as her larger siblings, but does so with a decided bounce in her step. Named CW’s Import Boat of the Year in 2010, you can gauge the success of the design by the grins on the crew as they barrel down Sir Francis Drake channel in the British Virgin Islands.

Victoria 67

The French design office of Berret Racoupeau drafted the lines of Fountaine-Pajot’s new flagship, introduced in 2013, a magnificent world-girdling voyaging catamaran. Like other giant cats launched in recent years, the boat features a sensational upper deck with all sail controls, helm and lounging stations.

Wharram Tanaroa

No list of influential multihulls would be complete without the work of James Wharram, and while Tangaroa wasn’t a production cat by any means, it showcases the British designer’s respect for ancient Polynesian craft. Wharram sailed this 23-foot-6-inch “double-hulled canoe” across the Atlantic in the 1950s, and sold countless plans for similar boats for decades afterwards.

Morrelli & Melvin Design and Engineering announced the production of the SL 33 grand prix catamaran .

Morrelli & Melvin has collaborated with other world-renowned multihull specialists Hakes Marine in New Zealand, Streamline, North Sails and Landenberger Sails in Germany to design and build this beautiful and innovative catamaran SL 33.

Just under 10 meters (33 ft) long by 5.4 meters wide (17.71 ft) and 535 kgs (1320 lbs), the fully demountable SL33 is optimized for winds under 15 knots, because time and again light air proves to be the deciding factor in distance races.

Lightweight and strong, the hulls and beams are constructed of Epoxy carbon fiber prepregs and NOMEX honeycomb cores. Its curved carbon fiber daggerboards and dagger rudders are designed for peak performance across all wind ranges giving the four to five man crew the opportunity to push hard even in heavy winds and seas.

“We keep testing the limits of hull shapes, materials and performance with our racing designs. We have seen quantum leaps over the past two years, particularly with all of the developments that came out of the 2010 America’s Cup. It’s been a pleasure to share ideas with other multihull enthusiasts and design and develop a boat that all of the sailors and teams who want to experiment with multihull sailing can have in the very near future”, – Pete Melvin, Morrelli & Melvin co-founder.

Invincible 33 Catamaran: 2022 Boat Buyers Guide

There are many ways to describe a boat, but Invincible has settled upon one word that embodies grace, strength, agility and more: athletic.

“The fact is,” the company says proudly, “no one today builds a more athletic fishing machine.”

Invincible introduced its now-classic center-console Invincible 36 in 2006, built on the patented Stepped-Vee Ventilated Tunnel design from naval architect Michael Peters. Invincible’s monohull boats still ride on that distinctive hull design.

Next, Invincible partnered with multihull specialist Morrelli & Melvin Design to create a center-console catamaran line whose patented hybrid, semi-asymmetrical design leads the industry in ride, handling and speed. The boat’s fishability is enriched by its single-level deck and ability to gaff a fish from the bow.

Invincible 33 Catamaran

Invincible’s smallest cat—with siblings to 46 feet—takes the performance, versatility and amenities of those larger boats and packages them in a powerful, agile and nimble new one: what the company calls “a whole new size of serious.”

Atop the patented catamaran hull, a single-level deck offers 360-degree walk-around fishability. Within the deck is generous storage and insulated fish boxes and livewells; another livewell is in the transom, among other options.

A high-speed pickup is ready to serve an optional sea chest. The deluxe console has ample space for battlewagon-style electronics, and is lined and lighted within to offer space for a full-size head. Match your fishing style with a custom top: a hardtop or folding tower with a dual station, plus a buggy-style hardtop and/or crow’s-nest. Rupp or Gem outriggers are options, as are additional rod holders, electric-reel outlets, LED spreader lights, and seating additions and upgrades including custom Llebroc helm chairs.

For power, choose from twin Yamaha 300s or Mercury Verado or Racing outboards.

2022 Invincible 33 Catamaran

Invincible’s 33 catamaran is one of the most stable and comfortable to run on the water, thanks to the exclusive, patented Morrelli & Melvin hull design.

The Invincible’s hybrid semi-asymmetrical hull applies the best characteristics of an asymmetrical catamaran with the soft-riding symmetrical cats. The result is a boat that makes sharp turns without awkward outboard heeling. Even in quartering seas, the sponsons stand firm in the slop. Double steps increase efficiency.

The helm station offers three-wide seating with a centered wheel. The leaning-post seat is comfortable for sitting or leaning. A step below the helm adds comfort while standing or seated. The station itself offers massive room for dual 20-inch (or larger) screens and, in our case, a 9-inch VesselView display, an Icom VHF radio and a Fusion stereo controller. The hardtop stretches wide and aft of the leaning post, keeping the helm glare-free and shaded.

The fighting cockpit is impressively spacious, taking full advantage of the 10-foot-3-inch beam. An oval livewell with a clear acrylic lid in the transom is 65 gallons, pressurized, and fed from a sea chest with three pumps in the starboard sponson. To port of this livewell is a pair of drawers ideal for tackle, rope, or wash and wax supplies. There’s also a larger 65-gallon livewell below the sole.

The mezzanine seat (back of the leaning post) is triple-wide, and the seating angle is designed to lean back even when the boat is on plane. Tackle storage is conveniently accessed behind the drop-down seatback and in the sides of the leaning post.

Four fish boxes and a coffin box ahead of the center console offer plenty of fish storage, and they pump out with durable gulper pumps instead of temperamental macerators.

A dual lounge forward of the helm features thick cushions, deep bolsters, armrests and handy cup holders. Invincible’s great ride and spacious deck make it a formidable fishing machine, but one that can deliver comfort during casual cruises or long rides to the angling grounds.

Marlin 33 is the multihull of the year 2022

The foldable sailing trimaran Marlin 33 has won the prestigious ‘Best Multihull of 2022’ award, the world’s highest accolade for multihull sailing and motor boats. Awarded in recent days at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande Motte, France, the prize was consigned into the hands of the Marlin 33’s designer, Dane Jan Andersen , at a special ceremony.

Mr Andersen is the head of Vision Boats , a small Danish team specializing in the design of multihull yachts that has an established working relationship with Marlin Trimarans. Designer, builder and sailor, with the Marlin 33 Mr Andersen has developed a trimaran for both racing and cruising that combines extreme sailing speed, great comfort and attention to aesthetics. It is one of the fastest trimarans in the world, built entirely in carbon with a set of innovations that have distinguished the work of Marlin Trimarans and Vision Boats, in particular its characteristic of being foldable and thus easily trailerable , but also easily assembled by just two people. The Marlin 33 won over the public at La Grande Motte: not only did the boat come top of the “Sailing Multihulls up to 40 feet” classification, it also received the most votes overall (47.36%) to win the first overall prize as the best multihull of the year, beating all the other boats and yachts in the competition .

Murmansk Oblast

Murmansk Oblast [lower-alpha 1] is a federal subject (an oblast ) of Russia , located in the northwestern part of the country, with a total land area of 144,900 square kilometres (55,900 sq mi) . Its only internal border is the Republic of Karelia to the south, as well is bordered internationally by Finland to the west and Norway to the northwest and the Barents Sea lies to the north and White Sea lies to the south and east. Much of the oblast's relief is hilly, with the Khibiny and Lovozero ranges rising as high as 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) above sea level and stretching from west to east. [14] The highest point of Murmansk Oblast is Yudychvumchorr , a flat-topped peak of the Khibiny. [16] The north of the oblast is mostly covered by tundra ; forest tundra prevails further south, while the southern regions are in the taiga zone. [14] There are over 100,000 lakes and 18,000 rivers in the oblast. [14] The coast contains the Rybachy Peninsula and the Cape Svyatoy Nos peninsulas.

The climate is harsh and unstable, due to the proximity of the Gulf Stream on one side and Arctic cold fronts on the other. [14] Sharp temperature changes, high winds, and abundant precipitation are common throughout the year, with the heating season lasting for ten straight months. [14] However, the waters of the Murman Coast in the south remain warm enough to remain ice-free even in winter. [17]

Most areas of the Kola Peninsula are subarctic climate ( Köppen climate classification : Dfc ). The nearby islands usually belong to tundra ( Köppen climate classification : ET ).

The Saami , now a very small minority, are the indigenous people of the region. Russians started exploring the shores of the White Sea as early as in the 12th century, and in 1916 founded the Russian city of Murmansk , now home to 307,257 ( 2010 Census ) , [7] or nearly 40% of the oblast's population. Many Finns also immigrated to Murmansk during the Finnish famine , around the year 1860. [18]

The oblast was established on May 28, 1938 from Murmansk Okrug of Leningrad Oblast (comprising the city of Murmansk, Kirovsky , Kolsky , Lovozersky , Polyarny , Saamsky , Teribersky , and Tersky Districts ) and Kandalakshsky District of the Karelian ASSR . [19]

The area of Pechengsky District ( Petsamo in Finnish ), which was ceded to Finland by the 1920 Treaty of Tartu and gave Finland access to the Barents Sea , was recaptured by the Soviet Union in 1940. After the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947 , the local Saami population was given the choice either of staying in Soviet Russia or resettling in Finland. [ citation needed ] Most of them chose the second option. [ citation needed ] On 30 October 1997, Murmansk, alongside Astrakhan , Kirov , Ulyanovsk , and Yaroslavl signed a power-sharing agreement with the government of Russia, granting it autonomy. [20] The agreement would be abolished on 31 May 2003. [21]

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Murmansk CPSU Committee (who in reality had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Murmansk Oblast is the fundamental law of the region. The Legislative Assembly of Murmansk Oblast is the province's standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Assembly exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The highest executive body is the Oblast Government, which includes territorial executive bodies such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day to day matters of the province. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the highest official and acts as guarantor of the observance of the oblast Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

The indigenous people of the area, the Saami , are only a tiny minority today. As of the 2002 Census , 92.2% of the oblast's population live in urban areas. [27] The most populous city is the Oblast's administrative center, Murmansk , with 270,000 inhabitants in 2021. [27] Other large cities and towns include Severomorsk , Apatity , Kandalaksha , Monchegorsk , and Kirovsk .

According to the 2010 Census, the ethnic composition of the oblast was as follows: [7]

Norwegians : 0.2%
Komi : 0.2%

others: 2.4%
73,484 people were registered from administrative databases, and could not declare an ethnicity. It is estimated that the proportion of ethnicities in this group is the same as that of the declared group. [28]

In 2009, the urban areas were marked by natural population decline (−0.16% per year) and the rural areas were marked by natural population growth (+0.35% per year). [33]

According to a 2012 survey [34] 41.7% of the population of Murmansk Oblast adheres to the Russian Orthodox Church , 3% are unaffiliated generic Christians , 1% are Orthodox Christian believers who do not belong to any church or are members of other (non-Russian) Orthodox churches , 1% are adherents of Islam , 0.4% are adherents of Rodnovery (Slavic native faith) and other indigenous folk religions, and 1% are members of the Catholic Church . In addition, 28% of the population declares to be "spiritual but not religious", 12% is atheist , and 12.5% follows other religions or did not give an answer to the question. [34]

The Murmansk Oblast is very rich in natural resources and has deposits of over 700 minerals. [36] The main industries of the region are in the sphere of raw material extraction and basic processing. [37] The largest industries are metallurgy (36,6%), electric power-production (22,9%) and food-industry, including fishing (13,7%). [38] [39] The icefree port of Murmansk plays an important role in marine transportation in Russia, and the oblast has a 41% share of the total Russian marine transport market. [40] [41] The fishing industry is among the most profitable in the region, supplying 16% of Russia's total fish production. Murmansk is a key base for three fishing fleets, including Russia's largest, the Murmansk Trawl Fleet . [37]

The economy of the region is export-oriented. Main export items are nickel products, apatite concentrate, copper and copper products, aluminium and ferrous metals. [40] The Murmansk Region produces almost 100 percent of Russia's apatite concentrate (3.7 million tons in 1998), 43 percent of nickel, 15 percent of copper, 12 percent of iron ore and iron ore concentrate (17.7 million and 6.4 million tons in 1998), and 40 percent of cobalt. [36] [38]

The largest companies of the region – constituting 90% of the oblast's production – are Pechenganickel , Olcon , the Kola Nuclear Power Plant , Sevrybkholodflot , Murmanrybprom , Murmansk Trawl Fleet and Murmansk Shipping Company . [36]

Large oil and gas resources have been discovered on the shelf of the Barents sea, including the massive Shtokman field – one of the world's largest gas fields with estimated reserves of 3.8 trillion cubic meters. [36] [41] [42] Prospective oil fields could potentially yield up to 40 million tons in the next 10–15 years. [36] However, the development of the oil and gas resources will require considerable investment. [36]

In 2006, the Murmansk Oblast's gross regional product was 141.9 billion rubles, which amounts to about 0.4% of the Russian GDP. [40] Unemployment in 2006 was 3,4%. [40] GRP pro capita in 2007 was 225 044 rubles. [43] Regional automobile code is 51.

The Murmansk Oblast plays an important role for the Russian Navy , the Northern Fleet having its headquarters in Severomorsk , 25 km north of Murmansk. The Navy has several other bases and shipyards in the Murmansk Oblast.
