Reece and Ben have their sprinter van and are on the run. The Commander catches himself on a gas station television that the authorities are looking for both men. (This is a surprise because up until this point, we thought Ben was under the radar). Ben is changing his CIA disguise. He heads back to the van and gives Reece some food. Ben tells him that he has information about where Hartley is hiding.

The last episode ended with what I interpreted as Secretary Hartley offering Katie a break with teeth. I mean, this is a threat to write a different coverup. We now see Katie being driven to the Secretary’s version of Camp David. Hartley tells Katie she has the correct facts but the wrong conclusions. Katie tells her it is hard to believe she was not the unnamed shareholder since all the conspirators had a share and made a profit. Hartley explains that it was not a coverup because she authorized the experiment.

The reason? She is well known for wanting to reduce the number of troops to record lows. It has been studied that 17 to 22 veterans a day commit suicide. Can you imagine those numbers being applied to active troops? That is the equivalent of two 9/11 disasters per year. She tells Katie. I read that if they can reduce trauma pathways, there would be less need to cycle soldier after soldier into combat. Hartley allows her to add what she has told her into her story.

Later, she talks about why she is doing this. Her father had PTSD. She had to protect her mother and found her father had committed suicide in the attic. This brings up the moral complexities of testing subjects without their consent. Because it works better blind, Hartley responds. I wanted Katie to ask her why not use it on herself since she had trauma issues as a child, but shows like this never ask. Hartley also confirms for Katie that she had no idea the experiments caused brain tumors until she saw the video of Katie berating Horn before his death.

On their way up to Hartley’s, Katie texts him not to come because she needs more time. They are two or three hours away and are stopped at a police checkpoint. This is when we tell ourselves never to underestimate someone’s incompetence. As Ben sits in the front of the van, the cop searching inside never looks at the vent under the bed or lifts the mattress, which seems like the most obvious hiding spot. After Ben’s CIA capabilities clear the van and the driver when checked in the database, she is about to lift the mattress but leaves it be.

Ben takes one last stab at convincing Reece to stop this course of action. They can take the boat down to Peru. James says no. Ben can go with him. Reece says no, he needs him on the 50-caliber watching his back. Ben then, emotionally, says, “You don’t have to die alone.” The Commander tells him he won’t be alone. He then dives into the water and heads to the Secretary’s bunker.

Katie finishes her story, is about to leave, and changes the headline, “Lorraine Hartley’s Legacy and her Private War for Special Operators.” Is this for her to make sure she gets off the island safely? Not sure, but she sits down to tape Hartley one last time with questions about the mission timeline. Hartley is defensive, including the conversation about not noting Pillar’s defense reports and the coverup investigation if it was before or after Steve Horn’s death.

Why is the reporter asking this? Because she sees a contradiction. This is two stories, not one, as Hartley insists. In the first story, she did not know how RD-4895 caused tumors. This was an unintended consequence of tackling a mental health crisis in the armed services, but she put her faith in the wrong people. In the second story, she created a criminal investigation into Horn and the coverup before San Francisco. Then, in a scene like Katie being Caffey and Hartley now being Jessup, the reporter tells her she sent a platoon to die.

The Secretary angrily replies she did it to save lives! Her actions saved 40 lives daily and even more when the drug was approved. Katie, though, leaves her with this, murder is murder, whether she got paid for it or not. Her response? She won’t let Katie advance her career based on the sacrifices those men made. To which I say, kind of like what she is doing?

Either way, Reece makes his way onto the island, and Ben has him covered. The FBI team sees the gunfire, explosions, and muzzle flash from a distance behind them. They send two men to deal with Ben and take over the operation for private security when they arrive. Meanwhile, Reece has made his way into the estate. Hartley, Katie, and two bodyguards enter a safe room. When they hear James outside, she panics and demands both men leave the room to deal with him. He continues his ascent up to the room.

Reece kills everyone, all that is left is one hired hand. He puts down his weapon and raises his hands. He unlocks the safe room door as Reece asks, and then he coldly shoots the unarmed man in the head. When Reece enters, he sees Katie and Hartley. Katie tells him she made no profit off it, and she is not the last shareholder. It doesn’t matter, he says, because she set the fuse. But before he could kill her, Hartley puts a bullet in her head. Reece, even though he is bleeding, escapes because Tony lets him go when on the beach.

The story ends with a revelation. Katie is in a hotel room, and her story is published. She texts Reece that the last investor has something to do with Obercon Analytics, and they are based out of Peru. Yes, that’s right, where Ben secretly goes to hide out on that beach. Katie leaves that hotel room, and we see Ben climbing onto his boat with a surfboard. He is in Peru. When he walks down below, he senses someone is there. He turns around, and it is Reece. He admits that he was the CIA agent who Pillar had to elevate the fake report of Kahana. Why? Because he was told that all of them are dead, let them die with their boots on.

But what about the 20 million dollars, Reece asks? He admits that was part of it too. He assured him that he had nothing to do with the killing of his girls, and when he found out, he wanted to set the world on fire right along with him. Reece is understanding, but the time is up. Ben says it’s okay, brother. Let’s finish the list. Reece pulls out his weapon, and the camera cuts to the beach, where we see the boat in the distance and hear a gunshot go off.

The series ends with Reece letting the drawing/list go into the ocean. He then reflects on when the starling broke its neck by crashing into the window. Along with Lauren, Reece tells Lucy about death and his job; if he does not return home one day, he will always be there in her heart. She cries, and they all embrace.

Reece then sails Ben’s boat into the sunset.

There’s only one more name on the list. Or at least, that’s what everyone thinks. As The Terminal List Episode 8 (“Reclamation”) begins, Reece and Ben get the call they’ve been waiting for about Defense Secretary Lorraine Hartley’s position. She’s at her family estate on Orcas Island, and she’s dumped her government-issue security in favor of contract operators from Capstone-connected Talos Tactical. She knows Reece is gunning for her, like a boogeyman in swim fins toting an M4. But she’s also drawing him in. When Agent Layun learns that Hartley has hired private sector security, he sees her play. It’s all about zero oversight over the battle to come. “She’s gonna kill him, then tell whatever story she wants.”

At the estate, Buranek is brought in for her promised follow-up interview with Hartley. She tells the secretary that she’s outright skeptical. “You used government resources to intercept my story.” But Hartley accelerates deftly into political spin mode. She cops to initiating the test of an unlicensed drug on Reece’s troop of Navy SEALs, but she also swears she had no part in the cover-up, and in fact was upholding her professional goal to reduce battle trauma longterm and beat back the alarming upward trend of suicides by active-duty and veteran servicemembers. And for a few minutes, it sounds pretty good. Hartley even gives Buranek her financials to prove she’s not “Oberon Analytics” and didn’t benefit from any RD-4895 shell company chicanery. Meanwhile, on the estate grounds, Talos personnel fit out portable lighting systems and set up their fields of fire. It’s being fortified for attack.

Reece and Ben will infiltrate Orcas Island via boat, but for that they’ll need a boat, which is where Reece’s unseen buddy Raife Hastings comes in. Despite Ben’s assertions of his untrustworthiness, Hastings has left them a small schooner complete with supplies including dive gear, small arms, and a .50 caliber sniper rifle. “This makes us even,” his note to Reece reads. “If you make it out, you know where to go.” They head up the inlet to make landfall, as well as a lot of noise. As for Layun, he understands what Hartley is up to, and knows Reece will head to Orcas to face her. But he’s not going to let getting shitcanned from the case stop him from attending the fireworks show. He grabs Mac Wilson, hooks up with the FBI heavy response group from the state forest chase, and they all head to the island in their own boat.

While Buranek initially acted receptive to Hartley’s version of the facts, it was only a feint. She catches the secretary in a lie about timeline, and the events of the ambush – essentially, what did she know, and when did she know it. “You weighed your selfish needs and your legacy against the value of those men’s lives. You chose to remain silent, and you let those men die!” It’s a bombshell, and Buranek has her double speak on tape. But just as Hartley is about to have the journalist arbitrarily silenced by a Talos goon, there’s an explosion on the boat dock and muzzle flashes from the lighthouse. Ben is on the .50 cal, covering Reece’s advance onto the island.

Talos operators might be a good hire if you’re concerned about compartmentalized accountability. But they’re absolute shit against a trained-up ex-Navy seal fueled by vengeance. (Just ask Steve Horn.) Reece goes through three or four defensive layers of these guys, fights his way into the estate, onto the upper floors, and into the hall outside Hartley’s safe room, where her last defender gets a tactical tomahawk to the skull. Reece steps through the door, leaking a little from a gunshot wound, and sights his weapon on Hartley over the protests of Buranek. Oberon Analytics wasn’t the secretary, she pleads. It was someone in the Agency. She says Reece can still be the father in Lucy’s picture, a man at peace. But Reece isn’t listening. “She lit the fuse. She’s on the battlefield.” Facing the certainty that Buranek’s reporting will ruin her, and staring  down the barrel of Reece’s assault rifle, Secretary of Defense Lorraine Hartley puts a pistol to her temple and pulls the trigger.

Outside, Layun, Mac Wilson and the HRT are containing the Talos operators. (“Federal. Fucking. Agents!” Wilson shouts with her typical subtlety.) They also send guys to grab Ben from his overwatch position, but he’s long gone. And when Layun finally spots Reece, limping away in the darkness, he hesitates for a moment, thinking about who’s David and who’s Goliath in this whole mess. “Don’t make me shoot you!” he finally yells. But Reece just looks at him, sullen. “I’m already dead.” Layun lets him fade silently into the murky waters.

Three weeks later, Congress is initiating sweeping reforms at the Pentagon, and pledging to investigate all military contracts. Buranek’s story did the good she promised it would to a bloodthirsty Reece. “But we’re not done,” he messages her. “Oberon Analytics.” And while Buranek is still digging, she has determined that it’s definitely a CIA contact, and managed through a Peruvian bank. Peru. The tranquil surf, sun, and cervezas escape hatch that Ben Richards had always said was his retirement spot. All along, Oberon, the unnamed RD-4895 conspirator, was Reece’s best friend and former team guy. And so, when Reece shows up on his boat, moored off Mancora, Ben isn’t even surprised. He swears the slayings of Lauren and Lucy weren’t his doing. He assures Reece that his motive wasn’t only money, but to let “the boys” die with their boots on, since Admiral Pillar assured him their tumors made them dead meat anyway. And finally, he just stops talking. “It’s OK,” he tells his old friend. “Let’s finish the list.” Bang .

In The Terminal List Episode 7 (“Extinction”), Buranek had offered Reece a distinction. “You’re not at war, you’re at home. There’s a difference.” His only response was “Not anymore,” which felt pretty cold-blooded at the time, in the context of the havoc he was about to unleash in Coronado. But there’s more to it than that. With his terminal list complete, Reece is left to walk the earth unburdened of his wrath, but utterly displaced from his emotional and physical center. Home as he knew it – the life he shared with his wife and daughter – was violently stolen. He’ll never get it back. And in its place is something else, a rootless existence that drifts on the shifting winds of disorder and consequence. There’s no solid intel on a second season of The Terminal List . Not from the Prime Video brass, anyway. But in the first season’s final moments, Reece sets a course for Mozambique in Ben’s boat, and that aligns with the outset of True Believer , the second book in author and series executive producer Jack Carr’s Terminal List series . After everything, after he got out, maybe Mozambique is where Raife Hastings told him to go. For a little reclamation of the soul.

Confusing Moments In The Terminal List Explained

Chris Pratt stares intensely on red carpet

A grizzled special forces commando crouches, wounded, under a makeshift shelter in a state park north of San Francisco. Over a stolen radio, he tells the FBI agents pursuing him, "It'd be a mistake to push a man to violence, if violence is what he's dedicated his whole life to perfecting."

Fans who only know Chris Pratt for his comedic work might be surprised to hear a line that sounds plucked straight from Sun Tzu emerging from the mouth of everybody's favorite Pawnee Parks Department employee. But in Amazon's 2022 conspiracy thriller "The Terminal List," Pratt switched gears by taking on the role of Lt. Commander James Reece, a Navy SEAL out for revenge against those responsible for the murders of his entire platoon and his wife and daughter.

Based on the novel of the same name by retired Navy SEAL Jack Carr,  the show has divided audiences and critics . Some praised it for its thrilling pace and military accuracy, while others criticized it for its unabashed jingoism and hollow characters.

With its break-neck pace and alphabet soup of military jargon, it can be hard to keep up with the labyrinthine plot of conspiracies and double-crosses. The showrunners do not waste words getting James Reece from action set piece to action set piece and expository scenes are few and far between.

The show has plenty of smaller details that can be difficult to pick up on during a casual viewing, so here are some of the most confusing moments in "The Terminal List" explained.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of "The Terminal List"

What is the significance of the Book of Judges?

If you're looking for good, old-fashioned revenge stories, there few better places to look than the Old Testament. Not surprisingly then, "The Terminal List" kicks off with a reference to the prophet Gideon. The pilot episode contains a verse from the Book of Judges, which describes a test by which Gideon selects the men most fit to wage war.

While there are different translations of Judges 7:4-7 (via Slate ), in the version used on the show, Gideon selects the 300 men who kneel to drink from a river, rather than drink on their stomachs. The kneeling men keep their eyes on the horizon and hands on their weapons, waiting for the enemy to appear.

The story of Gideon and his 300 men symbolizes the effectiveness of a smaller, elite fighting force against a numerically superior foe. This idea is central to the formation of special forces units, which "The Terminal List" explores: The Department of Defense replaces larger standing fighting forces with smaller specialized units like James Reece's Navy SEAL unit. This shift results in an increased burden on a small community of already overworked soldiers.

Gideon is also an apt analogy for James Reece and his search for vengeance. After Gideon leads his army of 300 Israelites to victory against the Midianites, he kills the Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna, who were responsible for brothers' deaths. Divine retribution delivered by one of the chosen few, motivated by something greater than himself to overcome all odds by sheer force of will. Sound familiar?

What's up with the tomahawks?

Many television shows use the opening credit scenes to pepper in small details that help flesh out the world in which you're about to immerse yourself, and "The Terminal List" is no exception. Its somber opening titles feature several interesting pieces of memorabilia and equipment in James Reece's man-cave/home office.

Perhaps most eye-catching are the crossed tomahawks mounted on the wall above his work bench. When James Reece packs his weapons before leaving home to track down the men responsible for the deaths of his lived ones, the axes come along for the ride and in fact, are used in one of the show's most memorable and grisly killings.

This small detail is probably familiar for people who have read the book on which the show is based. In Jack Carr's novel, tomahawks are Reece's signature weapon and are used to dispatch multiple names on his list. On  his website , Carr says that he chose tomahawks because he wanted to indicate that Reece is a "student of war," so fans of the novel will no doubt be thrilled to see that the literary Reece's signature blades have made it into the television adaptation.

What are the companies involved with RD-4895?

The central conspiracy of Season 1 of "The Terminal List" involves the experimental drug RD-4895, which was administered to Reece's unit before the disastrous mission in Syria. Reece discovers that the headaches and memory problems he's been having since the ambush are the result of this mystery drug, which is connected to the shady company Capstone Industries.

RD-4895 was created by the pharmaceutical company Nubellum, led by Mike Tedesco (Paul McCrane). Tedesco originally developed drugs to treat Alzheimer's patients until Nubellum was purchased by Capstone Industries CEO Steve Horn (Jai Courtney). Capstone Industries is a conglomerate with fingers in many pies, including the military industrial complex.

Horn pressures Tedesco to pivot from medical to military applications of drugs. This leads to the creation of RD-4895, which they believe can be used to prevent combat veterans from experiencing PTSD and is potentially worth billions of dollars. Eager to milk this nootropic cash cow, Horn uses his connections in the Department of Defense to bypass FDA regulations on human testing and try out the drug on members of the military.

And he would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling brain tumors caused by RD-4895. With a potential sale to Elias Ryberg's (Carsten Norgaard) company Plano on the line, Horn pays off several officers in Reece's chain of command to send the Alpha Platoon into an ambush in Syria, thus erasing any evidence of the drug's fatal side effects.

Why does Mike Tedesco talk to the press?

Nubellum CEO Mike Tedesco is just another businessman out for a big payday until he has a sudden change of heart in Episode 5. He tries to tank the sale of Nubellum to Plano during a meeting with Elias Ryberg. Later on, he blows the whistle on Capstone Industries and gives reporter Katie Buranek ( Constance Wu ) damning evidence of the cover-up of Operation Odin's Sword.

Tedesco gets killed by Steve Horn's private army Talos Tactical before he gets to reveal why he decided to come clean. But an interview he has with Buranek offers some clues to his motivations.

Tedesco tells Buranek about his early research looking for a cure for Alzheimers. When she asks why he chose that specific focus, he cites Daniel Keyes' classic novel "Flowers for Algernon,"  which tremendously impacted him when he first read it in college. Specifically, the novel's theme of losing yourself became one of Tedesco's greatest fears.

Keyes' novel features a predicament like Tedesco's: A scientific advancement presents an opportunity to drastically improve the lives of thousands of people, but due to unforeseen side effects, it irreparably changes the life of its test subject.

After Tedesco reminisces about the book that set him on his current path, he realizes that he's living his worst fear: He has lost his original altruistic motivations — and himself – to a blind pursuit of money. Tedesco feels culpable for the trail of destruction that his "miracle drug" has wrought on the very people it was supposed to help.

What does it mean to ring the bell?

The more sonically inclined may have noticed that this show's got bells. Ringing bells are a recurring sound motif in Season 1 that is most noticeable in the climactic scene when Reece crosses the final name off his list. As the crack of a gunshot echoes across the ocean off the coast of Peru, a bell can be heard tolling in the distance. Fans of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" know that the tolling of bells is never good news for characters within stabbing distance, but in fact, ringing bells have a deeper meaning for Navy SEALs.

Former Navy SEAL William McRaven gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin and highlighted the role of bell-ringing in the SEALs. If you want to drop out of the grueling selection process required to join the Navy's elite special forces unit, all you have to do is ring a bell that hangs in the middle of the training camp. This signals to everyone that you are choosing not to continue and will not become a SEAL.

At the end of Season 1, it is revealed that Reece was betrayed by someone who went through the same grueling training process he did (depicted in some of his flashbacks) to become part of the extremely close-knit brotherhood of SEALs.

When Reece tracks down Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch) in Peru, the bell tolls in part because Ben chose to not be a part of that community and instead, chose to betray a brother-in-arms for $20 million dollars.

What does the scene where the bird flies into the window mean?

As a result of the tumor caused by RD-4895, Reece experiences debilitating migraines and memory confusion, which render him unable to tell whether events are happening in real time or are from weeks ago. The audience sees several of these hallucination/flashbacks throughout the course of Season 1, and it can be hard to parse out meaning from scenes that you're not even sure are real.

One of these flashback/hallucinations involves a memory from right before Reece leaves for the doomed mission in Episode 1. Reece is enjoying his last night with his wife and daughter before he deploys, when a blackbird flies into the window, breaking its neck and leaving an ominous crack in the window.

This scene is replayed multiple times throughout the show, from different perspectives, and with many added nightmarish layers of hallucination as Reece continues to lose his grip on reality. So, what's so important about this scene?

According to Worldbirds , encounters with blackbirds can represent the arrival of the unknown or mysterious, while dead blackbirds offer a different portent: They can be a sign of an impending death, either literal or symbolic. Since the scene takes place before Reece leaves for Operation Odin's Sword, the dead blackbird is an omen foretelling the shadowy conspiracy unfolding around an unknowing Reece and indicating that his life is about to undergo a tragic and irreversible change.

What happened to Katie Buranek's father?

One downside of the fast pace of "The Terminal List" is that there isn't much time to dig into supporting characters' backstories and motivations. One character that suffers from this is Katie Buranek, the reporter investigating what happened to Reece's unit in Syria. We don't learn much about her until the penultimate episode when she drops a small clue about her past to FBI agent Tony Layun (J.D. Pardo).

When Layun asks her why she cares so much about publishing the story, she reveals that when she was four, her family lived in China during the rule of Deng Xiaoping, the general secretary of the CCP or Chinese Communist Party (via Britannica ). Her father "decided to break from the CCP" and oppose "the Xiaoping regime." The script does not indicate what stance he took, just that he sent Buranek along with her mother and brother to the United States, presumably for their safety. Because of this, Buranek believes that the truth matters, especially when "it's David versus Goliath."

We never find out exactly what happened to Buranek's father but the timing of the show's events makes it possible that he was involved in the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, when Xiaoping was the leader of China (via The Washington Post ). Following the death of liberal secretary Hu Yaobang in April, pro-democracy protestors assembled in Beijing to push for greater political and social freedoms.

Xiaoping supported CCP hardliners who wanted to use force to break up the protests and in June of that year, the military moved to clear Tiananmen Square by attacking protestors. It's implied that Buranek's father was one of the protestors killed during the incident.

Why does Admiral Pillar hand over evidence to the FBI?

If you're involved in the cover-up of a failed pharmaceutical experiment, you probably wouldn't hand over evidence of your guilt to the FBI, right? One of the more head-scratching moments in Season 1 comes in Episode 7, when Admiral Pillar gives Tony Layun a folder of classified military documents implicating his role in administering RD-4895 to Reece's unit.

After Reece kills Steve Horn in Episode 5, Admiral Pillar and other military officers meet to discuss whether they have legal cover for the secret tests of RD-4895 that they ran on Reece and his men. Pillar asserts that since they were following the orders of the EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) signed by Secretary of Defense Lorraine Hartley (Jeanne Tripplehorn), they're in the clear.

But when Hartley visits Pillar in person and begins asking questions about Operation Odin's Sword, Pillar realizes that she plans to throw him under the bus to save her political career.

The Emergency Use Authorization does absolve Pillar of any legal wrongdoing in administering the tests, but it does not provide absolution for the payment he took to help with the cover up of the side effects. Pillar turns over the EUA to Layun to stop the investigation before they can discover that he was the beneficiary of one of the shell corporations into which Steve Horn deposited the RD-4895 hush money.

He is trying to prevent Hartley from pinning the blame on him and also keep himself out of legal trouble, as the FBI investigation draws closer to the real reasons behind the murder of Reece's family.

Who is Raife Hastings?

Though he doesn't appear in Season 1 of "The Terminal List," Raife Hastings plays a crucial role in Reece's quest for revenge, since he provides the boat that Reece and Edwards use for their final assault on Lorraine Hartley's compound in northern California. But who is this mysterious benefactor, and why is he so willing to help James Reece?

All we learn about Hastings in the show is that he is a former Navy SEAL teammate of Reece and Edwards. He was a part of the rescue mission that saved the life of Army pilot Liz Riley in 2007, and for some reason that we never discover, he owes Reece a big favor.

According to Cinemaholic , Raife Hastings is a familiar name for anybody who's read the sequel to "The Terminal List." The second novel in the series, "True Believer," sees Reece flee the States for Mozambique, where Hastings and his family live on a game preserve.

The inclusion of the name is a nice easter egg for readers and serves as a potential set up for a second season arc based on Jack Carr's follow up novel. With Reece setting course for Mozambique at the end of Season 1, we can expect Raife Hastings to play a much bigger role if Amazon renews "The Terminal List" for Season 2.

Who are the men on the boat before the final mission?

As Reece prepares to cross Lorraine Hartley's name off his list, Ben Edwards tries unsuccessfully to get him to abandon his quest for revenge. He encourages Reece to let Buranek's story destroy Hartley's reputation and escape the country to live and fight another day. Reece refuses and tells his old friend that he must continue with his mission.

In a last-ditch attempt, Edwards tells Reece, "you don't have to die alone," to which Reece replies, "I'm not alone." As the camera pans over to Reece, we see two soldiers in combat gear sitting next to Reece on the boat. Reece has worked with other people before, but these men seemingly appear out of nowhere and appear to only be visible to Reece. Is this another one of Reece's hallucinations?

The two men that are Reece's former SEAL teammates Boozer and Ramirez. They could be just another hallucination but, given the show's exploration of the brotherhood of elite combat units, their appearance is likely a representation of this theme. Even though Reece is going into battle by himself, he is never truly alone because he is part of something larger than himself.

This moment is also connected to the passage from the Book of Judges. Though Gideon's men are few, he is supported by a divine force that gives him the ability to conquer his enemies despite the overwhelming odds. Reece's connection with his SEAL teammates, even in death, gives him a similar advantage in his fight against the people responsible.

Why does James Reece throw away his daughter's picture?

At the end of Season 1 of "The Terminal List," Reece has killed everyone responsible for the RD-4895 tests. He sits alone on a sailboat, a broken man. He's lost, adrift, confronting an uncertain future and a growing brain tumor. But there's a note of hope during this final scene.

The eponymous list containing the names of the corrupt Capstone cabal is written on the back of the last picture Reece's daughter ever drew for him. It's a clever visual representation of Reece's inability to separate his desire for vengeance, his anger, and his more violent nature from his happy memories and love of his family.

Reece has inextricably linked these contradictory feelings, and as he reveals to Liz Riley in Episode 6, he needs to stop thinking about the memory of his family because it's "getting in the way." Reece's flashbacks become increasingly distorted and haunted by the violence he has seen and is inflicting, to the point that his daughter becomes a terrifying vision rather than a comforting one.

As Reece sits on the boat in the Episode 8, he looks at the picture his daughter drew without being violently yanked out of his remembrance by the realities of his mission. He kisses the drawing one final time and drops it into the ocean. While he may never be able to forget the trauma he's endured, Reece is able to let go of the need for revenge he's associated with his wife and daughter and begin to grieve them properly.

The Terminal List : 7 Things to Know About Chris Pratt's Navy SEAL Show

TAGGED AS: Prime Video , psychological thriller , streaming

Always trust a man in uniform?

Maybe not so much in The Terminal List , Prime Video’s psychological action-thriller adaptation of former Navy SEAL Jack Carr’s novel of the same name.

Premiering all eight episodes on July 1, the series stars Chris Pratt as Lt. Commander James Reece — a SEAL who is one of two surviving members of his platoon after a covert mission goes horribly awry. Once back home, Reece is told he suffered a brain injury during the battle. He also has trouble separating fact from fiction about what actually happened in the field; something that begins to bleed over into his life back in California with wife Lauren ( Riley Keough ) and daughter Lucy (Arlo Mertz).

Despite the sensationalism of the plot, the series’ cast and crew strived for authenticity when it came to representing members of the military.

“From the very beginning … what was so important to everyone is that if a veteran sat down, turned this on and watched it, they would at the very least sit there and say, ‘Wow, these guys put in the time energy and effort to get this right,'” says Carr, who is also an executive producer on the series. “Maybe there’s a little Hollywood thing here there, but these guys went to every length … to do everything possible to keep this grounded in the foundation of the realities of modern combat.”

So what does that mean exactly? And what other ways does the show stand out from other military-set thrillers? Rotten Tomatoes interrogated Carr, Pratt, showrunner David DiGilio and first episode director Antoine Fuqua .

1. Pratt’s Training Was a Lot Different From Johnny Karate

The Terminal List Chris Pratt

“I did slightly more research than I did to fight as Johnny Karate ,” Pratt laughs when asked about any comparisons to the kids’ TV host that his character, Andy Dwyre, played in the TV comedy Parks and Recreation .

In all seriousness, former Navy SEAL and current military consultant Ray Mendoza served as a technical advisor on the show, while Pratt’s friend Jared Shaw, another former SEAL and the one whom the actor shadowed while preparing for the film Zero Dark Thirty , was a co-producer on the show and played Reece’s friend and platoon member, Ernest “Boozer” Vickers. Also, former Army ranger Max Adams was a member of the writing staff.

Pratt trained not only in weapons handling — including how to count rounds of ammunition fired and do a tactical reload before entering a dangerous area — but situational awareness, driving techniques and proper language and terminology. (His character, Carr says, should be noted as a prior enlisted SEAL sniper who was moving his way up to Troop Commander).

Pratt has carried this heightened state of awareness into his personal life. He can now tell if a member of the paparazzi is tailing his car.

2. PTSD Is a Plot Point

Chris Pratt terminal list ptsd brain trauma

The horror Reece experienced overseas, and the impact from it, is not something the show ignores.

“I think PTSD and TBI — Traumatic Brain Injury — these are massive issues that are only now really coming into light and being explored in the way that they need to be,” showrunner DiGilio says. “Sometimes people, and writers in particular, can be a little lazy and use it as a crutch instead of really diving into it.”

He says that, even though the show is a psychological thriller, “what we’re excited to do is shine a light on what it’s like for operators to come back home after dealing with these incredibly traumatic events.”

Fuqua adds that “I hope we keep a level of respect for our military men and women” and that “I’m concerned, like we all are, about when they come home. I don’t think we’re taking good care of them. I think we could do better.”

3. The Camera Doesn’t Let the Audience Know What’s Up

chris pratt james reece funeral scene terminal list 700

In setting up the series, Fuqua says he took the “unreliable narrator” approach to scenes where Reece may be under attack (or may just think he’s under attack).

“I track him a lot. And I was stalking him a lot. I would point to the head; his brain from behind,” the director says. “There’s some shots that are really tight on his face where the edges are a little out of focus and his eyes look a little wild to make the audience feel uncomfortable a bit.”

He says the point was to show that “everything was not clear and that was, sort of, the workings of his brain.”

4. Fuqua Uses His Art As a Statement

terminal-list-antoine-fuqua Chris Pratt

The Terminal List was ordered in 2020 right before the coronavirus-related shutdown and the writers broke the first season via Zoom (in fact, they didn’t gather in real life until the show’s premiere event in June).

Fuqua, who has a history of working on military and police-related material with projects like Training Day , Shooter and Brooklyn’s Finest , says he didn’t have any hesitation with continuing with this project as the Black Lives Matter movement grew after the deaths of George Floyd and others in 2020.

“My job is to entertain and to make the best films I can make,” he says. “And then, through the films, I can say something without being preachy. I can say something about justice or I can say something about government control. But my job is to make the best film possible for the audience. And hopefully, they’ll walk away with more than just entertainment.”

5. The Show Opens With a Bible Story, But Isn’t Religious

terminal list chris pratt taylor kitsch

The show opens with a voice-over of Pratt’s Reece telling a story from “The Book of Judges” from the Bible and is about the military leader Gideon choosing the best warriors.

This is a slightly different opening from the book, which starts almost immediately with a battle sequence. DiGilio says that this dialogue happens later in the book, during a scene between Reece and his mother. This scene didn’t make it into the TV adaptation, but the showrunner says he still wanted to include the message of Gideon “because it deals with the warrior ethos.”

“And that’s what Jack Carr’s novel, and this show, does better, I think, than anything else before is it’s a look inside the warrior class,” DiGilio says. “And what happens if you push a member of that class to the breaking point. We knew it was incredibly important to take a story that speaks to the millennia-old tradition of the warrior class and put it up front because it becomes the lens through which to look at the rest of the events.”

He says that the passage is “an incredibly important story because it deals with the warrior ethos.”

“Reece is a man of faith. He’s a man of strength and a man of tradition,” DiGilio says. “And so, we figured, this is a perfect passage to use to introduce the character and these incredible SEALs of Alpha platoon.”

6. The Cast Is Stacked with Known Actors

jd pardo christina vidal terminal list 700

Taylor Kitsch plays Reece’s friend and confidant Ben Edwards, Constance Wu is journalist Katie Buranek and JD Pardo appears as Tony Liddel, a member of the FTF, or Fugitive Task Force.

“Anytime you have a movie star like Chris Pratt driving your a storyline, it demands that you then have movie stars of equal amazing talent and charisma in your other storylines,” DiGilio says. “Any time you step away from your number one on the call sheet, you need to land with actors and actresses who are number ones in their own right.”

He was especially impressed with Mayans, M.C. actor Pardo, who was cast late in filming, but who holds his own against Pratt particularly well in the sixth episode.

7. Comparisons To The Fugitive Are Welcome

chris pratt riley kenough terminal list 700

Fuqua says he remembers watching films like Parallax View and Jacob’s Ladder when he was younger and that he was influenced by the psychological thrillers directed by Brian De Palma . However similarities to the 1997 Andrew Davis –directed action movie The Fugitive about a man wrongly convicted for killing his wife, or its TV predecessor , didn’t dawn on him until this interview.

DiGilio says that the film, which starred Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones , “played heavily in our writers room minds” as they were breaking the story involving Pardo’s character.

“This is a character who is chasing down Reese and questioning what he is doing; questioning his version of justice,” DiGilio says. “I think that, actually, those comparisons are welcome.”

Chris Pratt as Commander James Reece

James Reece is the main protagonist of the series, a Navy SEAL who returns home after an ill-fated covert mission where his entire team was wiped off in an ambush. Reece is plagued by mixed-up memories and struggles to reconcile the events and circumstances that led to the death of his entire platoon, his culpability, and many questions he can't seem to find answers to. After new information comes to light, he smells foul play and embarks on a one-man revenge mission to bring to book those who conspired to compromise his life and that of his deceased colleagues.

Pratt's earliest roles include playing Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation . After making a name with comedy and satire-like roles, Pratt made a seamless transition to action movies with a starring role in the Jurassic World franchise, taking on the mantle of Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and playing Dan Forester in the military science fiction The Tomorrow War .

Taylor Kitsch as Ben Edwards

Taylor Kitsch plays Ben, the best friend of the lead character Commander James Reece. Ben, a CIA agent, uses his links to help his buddy on his quest for justice. While on board with the idea of Reece getting his revenge, he constantly prods him along the path of introspection.

Chris Pratt's new series The Terminal List is now available to watch in full on Prime Video , and it tells a murky story full of conspiracies, double dealing and cover-ups.

Pratt stars in the Terminal List cast as James Reece, a Navy Seal whose entire team was killed during an ambush on a mission, which Reece believes to be a set-up.

With his memory fuzzy, Reece must uncover the truth, but just what does he find out and who was the real architect of his woes?

Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of The Terminal List on Prime Video.

The Terminal List ending explained

Who was behind the conspiracy to kill alpha team.

Jai Courtney in The Terminal List.

At the start of the series, Lt Commander James Reece 's entire team of Navy Seals are ambushed on a covert mission with only two survivors – Reece himself and fellow soldier Boozer.

More like this

Boozer is later killed in an attack which is made to look like a suicide, while Reece also survives an attack from unknown assailants. He then comes home to find his wife and daughter killed.

As Reece works his way through a kill list of those he believes are responsible, along with his friend Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), he discovers that Alpha Team were unwittingly part of a trial drug experiment, which was designed to prevent PTSD.

The trial was pushed through by Capstone Industries CEO Steve Horn (Jai Courtney), and authorised by Secretary of Defence Lorraine Hartley (Jeanne Tripplehorn), along with Admiral Pillar (Nick Chinlund), Commander Cox (LaMonica Garrett) and Captain Howard (Matthew Rauch).

However, the drugs - designated RD4895 - didn't work, and the entire team was instead left with fatal brain tumours. The team were then wiped out in a purposefully botched mission so that there would be no evidence of the failed trial.

What happened to Secretary Hartley?

Jeanne Tripplehorn in The Terminal List.

When reporter Katie Buranek (Constance Wu), who has earned Reece's trust, tries to publish an exposé on the trial and cover-up, the publication is blocked by Hartley, who persuades Buranek to visit her at her home.

During a heated conversation, Buranek gets Hartley to admit that she knew about the plan and kept quiet to protect her reputation. She records this admission and when Reece arrives to kill Hartley, Buranek tries to persuade him not to, and instead let her face justice through the courts.

Unconvinced he moves in to kill her, but Hartley beats him to it, pulling a pistol from a draw and shooting herself.

Katie subsequently publishes her story and the truth gets out, exposing the conspiracy in full.

Who else was involved in the conspiracy?

Taylor Kitsch in The Terminal List.

The most shocking moment of the finale surely comes when Reece discovers the answer to one final mystery. He knew that someone in the CIA was being paid off by Capstone, via a shell company, Oberon Analytics, in order to leak bad intel and orchestrate that ambush on Alpha Team.

However, when he finds out the money was routed through a bank in Peru, he pieces together what his friend Ben Edwards had previously told him, and works out that he is in fact the mole.

Edwards is the CIA intelligence source that was paid by Capstone to orchestrate the mission/ambush that killed Alpha Team.

Reece confronts him on his boat and gets the confession, with Edwards saying that he was told the team were destined for death anyway due to their tumours, and thought it better they die in combat. However, he acknowledges that his role in the conspiracy was also because of the money he was paid, $20 million in total.

Edwards tells Reece he knew nothing of the plan to murder Reece's family, and his rage at the conspiracy was genuine from that point. Still, in his final act of revenge, Reece seemingly shoots him dead off camera.

Where do we leave Reece?

Chris Pratt in The Terminal List.

At the end of the season, Reece seems to find some peace following the death of his family, remembering in full the memory of them he had been struggling to all season.

He then throws his kill list, written on the back of one of his daughter's drawings, overboard, as he sails into the distance.

Every name on james reece's terminal list (& what they did).

Every name on James Reece's kill list and how they got there in Amazon Prime's The Terminal List, starring Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Terminal List

The basis for Prime Video's adaption of  The Terminal List is James Reece's actual list of people to kill, all of whom had a hand in the death of his family and his SEAL team. Starring Chris Pratt as Commander James Reece, The Terminal List  cast includes co-stars Taylor Kitsch, Jai Courtney, Constance Wu, LaMonica Garrett, and Jeanne Tripplehorn with David DiGilio serving as writer/showrunner. The show is the latest entry in Prime Video's military thriller series of shows, such as Reacher and Jack Ryan , based on books and/or characters from popular novels of the genre.

The Terminal List is Carr's debut novel featuring Reece as his lead protagonist, which he wrote with Pratt in mind. The role is a big shift for Pratt, trading in the goofball charm of roles like Andy Dwyer and Starlord for a hard-edged military professional. Playing a war-torn Navy SEAL is tailor-made for Chris Pratt, online backlash and all, who exudes the emotional loss, pain, fortitude, and vengeance of Reece with an inspired dedication. After the death of his entire SEAL team and then his wife and daughter, Reece sets out to take out everyone responsible for their deaths, from top to bottom.

Making a "kill list" on the back of his daughter's last drawing, Reece adds names as new revelations come to light and The Terminal List grows to include all manner of individuals responsible for his loss. From those that chose to use the experimental RD4895 drug on his SEAL team without their knowledge, to those that profited off of it, to those who subverted the truth, and those who committed the actual murders, Reece's list leaves no one safe from his vengeance. Below is a roster of who made the list, why they're on it, and how Reece dealt with them in the show.

NCIS Agent Josh Holder

Josh Holder is played by Warren Kole in The Terminal List , an NCIS agent assigned to Reece's case—specifically the murder of his family and "Boozer", the only other surviving member of the SEAL team ambush. As it turns out, Holder was paid off to help cover up the murders and plant evidence that would make Reece look like the killer. Once he's uncovered to be a dirty agent by both Reece and Constance Wu's Katie Buranek, Holder becomes the first name on James Reece's terminal list. Reece confronts Holder at his home late at night, shooting him in the head after he confesses to his role in the set-up/cover-up, giving Reece the name of Saul Agnon to add to the list.

Agnon is played by Sean Gunn in Amazon Prime's  The Terminal List , a sleazy, middle-man business associate of Steve Horn who helps to broker deals for his firm, up to and including hiring a hitman to kill Reece and his family to protect their interests. Reece and Edwards look into Agnon's dealings and decide to subdue and question him, breaking into his rental home and tying him up where Reece gets him to confess that Mexican sicarios were hired to kill his family and that Steve Horn is behind it all. Reece gives him a methadone overdose, killing him painlessly.

Steve Horn is played by Jai Courtney, the CEO of Capstone Industries and the one who funded the creation of The Terminal List 's RD4895 drug . In his hubris, he worked with Secretary Hartley, Admiral Pillar, etc. to skirt the FDA to fast track the drug, implementing testing on Reece's SEAL team without their knowledge, which caused them all to develop brain tumors. Although the drug creators later corrected the tumor issue, the SEAL team was already affected by the tumors. In order to cover up the illegal corners they cut to get the drug approved, Horn and his conspirators orchestrated the ambush that killed the team (minus Reece), later hiring hitmen to kill Reece and his family and to make it look like Reece was the killer. Reece eventually catches up to Horn and sets off an EFP bomb at his van, before shooting him dead on the steps of his corporate office.

Marcus Boykin

Boykin is played by Butch Klein in The Terminal List , an oil businessman acting on the interests of Horn's Capstone Industries, helping to arrange for two sicarios to enter the US and kill Reece and his family. Reece kills one of the men when they attempt to kill him at the hospital, while the other escapes with a wound back to Mexico. Reece sets up a sniper position along Boykin's route to work and shoots him from afar, killing him as his car flips off the roadway.

El Navajas aka Small Assassin

El Navajas is played by Albert Valladares in The Terminal List , one of two assassins who escaped Reece's wrath after killing his wife and daughter and attempting to kill him. The sicario was wounded by Chris Pratt's The Terminal List  character  during the assassination attempt, but still managed to get away. Reece tracks El Navajas to Mexico, where he assaults his hideout, capturing and torturing the sicario to death, eviscerating him with his tomahawk.

Admiral Gerald Pillar

Pillar is played by Nick Chinlund in The Terminal List , the commanding officer of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, who was paid off by Capstone (along with Commander Bill Cox, and JAG Captain Howard) in order to profit off the testing and implementation of the experimental drug RD-4895, allowing the SEAL team to be tested without their consent, helping to orchestrate their demise in a planned assault, and assisting in all aspects of the cover-up, while working with Secretary Hartley and Capstone to do so. Reece eventually discovers Pillar, Cox, and Howard's involvement and kidnaps Howard, getting him to agree to wear a suicide vest to kill both himself and Piller, which he does.

Commander Bill Cox

Cox is played by LaMonica Garrett in The Terminal List , the second in command of Coronado and co-conspirator with Pillar and Howard in the profiteering, testing, and cover-up of RD-4895, including the death of Reece's family. Cox is confronted by Reece, who wrestles him to the ground and breaks his arm before drugging him. Cox awakens to find himself at the ocean shore of Coronado where Reece has the disgraced commander hold a training log in the water, eventually letting him drown when he can't support the weight.

Related: Why Chris Pratt Movies Are So Popular (Despite Him Being Disliked)

JAG Captain Howard

Howard is played by Matthew Rauch in The Terminal List and is part of the trio of Naval Command conspirators alongside Pillar and Cox, also profiting from the testing and cover-up of RD-4895, which killed Reece's SEAL team and family. Reece and Edwards work together to kidnap Howard, eventually bringing him, his wife, and his son to the beaches of Coronado where Howard is given the choice to wear a suicide vest to kill Pillar or his wife and son will be killed. Howard agrees to the plan to spare his family, wearing the device to Pillar's officer where Reece sets it off remotely, killing them both.

Secretary Lorraine Hartley

Hartley is played by Jeanne Tripplehorn in The Terminal List , who is the Secretary of Defense in the show, ultimately responsible for helping to cut corners and test the experimental drug on Reece's SEAL team without their consent, as well as allowing their deaths to happen in a set-up ambush. The reason for the cover-up of the side effects of the drug is to help make sure a corrected version is approved and implemented, thereby bringing in tremendous profits and giving more accolades to her political legacy. At first an ally to Reece, he eventually discovers her role in the plot, becoming a late addition to the list. Reece confronts her when he assaults her compound, but before he can shoot her, she grabs a pistol and kills herself.

Ben Edwards

Edwards is played by Taylor Kitsch in The Terminal List . A former SEAL and teammate of Reece's, Edwards is a CIA agent that acts as Reece's partner in executing the list throughout the series, until it's later uncovered that he was the one who set up the ambush on Reece's SEAL team (Operation Odin Sword), which resulted in their deaths. He rationalized it as wanting the men to "die with their boots on" when he found out from Admiral Pillar that the drug had given them all tumors that they would all die from anyway. He was paid $20 million by Capstone to help orchestrate the ambush but felt guilty when Reece's family was killed in the wake of the cover-up. After sailing his way to Peru, Reece catches up with Edwards on his boat, where Edwards confesses and shows remorse before Reece presumably shoots him dead off camera.

Which Country is James Reece Heading to at the End of The Terminal List?

Tamal Kundu of Which Country is James Reece Heading to at the End of The Terminal List?

Based on the 2018 namesake book by Jack Carr , ‘The Terminal List ’ is a military action thriller series. The story follows Lt. Commander James Reece ( Chris Pratt ), a Navy SEAL platoon leader who loses almost his entire team when a mission goes wrong. After returning to the US, the sole survivor of the mission besides Reece seemingly kills himself, while Reece experiences headaches, hallucinations, paranoia, and memory issues. His wife Lauren thinks that the concussion he suffered during the mission is the reason for this and convinces him to go see a doctor. On the day Reece does so, Lauren and their daughter Lucy are killed by masked assassins. This sends Reece on a violent path of revenge.

When the dust settles, Reece is still alive. If you are wondering which country he is heading to next, this is what you need to know. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Where Is James Reece Going in the End?

After Reece kills Ben Edwards , his best friend, former colleague, and CIA operative, he takes Lucy’s drawing in his hand one more time, kisses it, and drops it into the ocean from Ben’s sailboat. He likely has no regret about what he has done. If anything, he probably feels relief for the first time in a long while. He spots a map among Ben’s things, and the camera focuses on Mozambique, likely implying that Reece intends to head there.

Carr’s book is part of the ongoing ‘Terminal List’ series. In the second book, ‘True Believer,’ Reece indeed ends up in Mozambique and begins living with the family of his “blood brother,” Raife Hastings. In the show’s first season, Raife doesn’t make an appearance, but he is mentioned several times. Raife is the one that leaves the boat for Reece and Ben so they can get to Secretary of Defense Lorraine Hartley.

sailboat in terminal list

Reece and Raife have a long and complicated history, which is explored in depth in the second book. Raife is originally from Zimbabwe and still has family in Africa. In 1998, Reece even accompanied Raife to his family farm in Zimbabwe and spent the summer there. In the present time, Reece travels across the Atlantic Ocean on a sailboat named Bitter Harvest, which belongs to the Hastings family.

After arriving at the Mozambique Coast of the Indian Ocean, Reece briefly anchors in the port city of Pemba before heading to Niassa Game Reserve, where he is greeted by Rich Hastings, Raife’s uncle and owner of RH Safaris. While Reece is safely hidden in the wilds of Africa, he is regarded as a dangerous domestic terrorist in the US. However, the Western world is thrown into chaos after a series of gruesome terrorist attacks, and the US government is forced to seek Reece out as he is the only man who can take on the mastermind behind the attacks, an enigmatic former Iraqi commando who seems to have vanished in the criminal underbelly of Europe. Working for the US government, Reece once more finds himself at the epicenter of a massive geopolitical conspiracy.

The Cars Of The Terminal List

Steven Symes

Just like the show, there’s plenty of testosterone coursing through this list of vehicles...

If you haven’t checked out The Terminal List on Amazon Prime, it delivers big on action with several cool cars used as set pieces. Instead of turning to plenty of CGI magic for mayhem, producers leaned on more practical effects, of course mixed with some Hollywood magic, making the show feel more based in reality.

Toyota Land Cruiser

sailboat in terminal list

It should be no surprise that star and executive producer Chris Pratt, who plays very practical Navy SEAL James Reece, sticks with a very practical Toyota Land Cruiser 60 Series. This one in particular is a 1988 FJ62, so it has fuel injection. Yes, it’s modified with aftermarket front and rear bumpers, a rear-mounted spare, auxiliary roof-mounted LED lights, and other niceties but nothing is flashy and everything has a functional purpose. It’s the kind of ride you’d expect a no-nonsense, down-to-earth character to prefer.

Jeep Gladiator

sailboat in terminal list

As a down-to-earth retired SEAL now working for the CIA, Taylor Kitsch’s character Ben Edwards also chooses a more sensible utilitarian ride, albeit newer and more expensive. While he does at one point use a Mercedes Sprinter camper van, his Jeep Gladiator is a far more interesting ride. It’s the type of thing an adventurous outdoorsman might choose, even if it isn’t as off-road capable as some options, because it can still take you plenty of places and haul loads of gear in the bed.

sailboat in terminal list

Similar and yet so very different from the Land Cruiser is the opulent G-Wagen used by one of the main villains in the series, Steve Horn. Because the man is so driven by ego and loves flaunting the trappings of his success, it makes sense he would prefer something so flashy and technically capable, but which would likely never even drive on a dirt road.

Rezvani Tanks

sailboat in terminal list

Big bad guy and corporate pirate Steven Horn is also a man of paranoia, so he has an impressive private security detail which is more like a small army. They escort his vehicle through the mean streets of San Francisco using two Rezvani Tanks. Even to normies these look intimidating, much like when so many were introduced to the Hummer H1 Alpha via Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the day.

See how the Key Bridge collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and tofu

The port of baltimore is the top port in the nation for automobile shipments.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday cut off access to much of the city’s port — causing a suspension of vessel traffic that will disrupt a key trade lane and threaten to further tangle already-stressed supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore was the 17th largest in the nation by total tons in 2021 and an important artery for the movement of autos, construction machinery and coal. It handled 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo worth nearly $81 billion in 2023, according to Maryland data, and creates more than 15,000 jobs.

On Tuesday, the Port of Baltimore said that vessel traffic would be suspended in and out of the port until further notice, but trucks would still be processed in its terminals.

“Baltimore’s not one of the biggest ports in the United States, but it’s a good moderate-sized port,” said Campbell University maritime historian Sal Mercogliano. It has five public and 12 private terminals to handle port traffic.

“It does cars, it does bulk carriers, it does containers, it does passengers,” said Mercogliano. “So this is going to be a big impact.”

Baltimore’s the top port in the nation for automobile shipments, having imported and exported more than 750,000 vehicles in 2022, according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry group.

About three-quarters of the autos that travel through the port are imports, dominated by big-name brands, including Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. Most of the top companies have enough inventory sitting on U.S. dealer lots that any immediate impact on supply is unlikely, said Ambrose Conroy, chief executive of the consulting firm Seraph.

“It’s too early to say what impact this incident will have on the auto business, but there will certainly be a disruption,” said John Bozzella, president of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.

The port ranked second in the country for exporting coal last year, according to the state of Maryland. But it’s not a huge global supplier of thermal coal, and the disruption can likely be made up by replacements from Australia or Indonesia if needed, said Alexis Ellender, lead analyst at global trade intelligence company Kpler.

Baltimore is also a niche port for the soybean trade, focusing mostly on high-value soy used in tofu, miso, tempeh and organic products, according to Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition. Most of those exports are destined for Asia, but Steenhoek doesn’t expect a big spike in tofu prices because several other U.S. ports also ship this sort of soy, including Norfolk, Va., Savannah, Ga. and Charleston, S.C.

All East Coast ports have become more important in recent years as the United States attempts to boost its trade with friendly nations and reduce geopolitical risks related to trade with China, which generally happens via West Coast ports, said Tinglong Dai, a Johns Hopkins Carey Business School professor and expert on global supply chains.

Baltimore port’s suspension is “one more disruption in an already-stressed system” for the global supply chain, said Abe Eshkenazi, chief executive of the Association for Supply Chain Management. Cargo will now have to be rerouted to other ports, which means figuring out where there is enough capacity to move things.

Coal shipments will need to be rerouted to other ports, Kpler’s Ellender said. And Ryan Petersen, chief executive of the logistics company Flexport, posted on X that the company currently has 800 containers on a slew of ships heading for the port that will need to be rerouted, likely to Philadelphia or Norfolk.

The biggest problem Steenhoek sees from Baltimore’s shuttering is the knock-on effect to other ports. Many ships stuck in the port were destined to make stops at other U.S. ports to load and unload goods before heading overseas, a complicated logistical dance now scrambled by the bridge collapse.

“It just shows how you throw a wrench in the supply chain and the impact is not just confined to that one port,” Steenhoek said.

Tim Meko, Justine McDaniel and David J. Lynch contributed to this report. Editing by Kate Rabinowitz and Karly Domb Sadof.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

What to know about the cargo ship Dali, a mid-sized ocean monster that took down a Baltimore bridge

Crews were set to begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge in Baltimore on Friday. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said a large crane, which can lift up to 1,000 tons, would be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that collided with it this week.

The container ship Dali, owned by Grace Ocean PTE, rests against wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Patapsco River on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, as seen from Pasadena, Md. Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse, while in the waters below divers searched through twisted metal for several construction workers who plunged into the harbor and were feared dead. Here’s what to know about the cargo ship Dali that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and leaving six bridge construction workers presumed dead.

MONSTERS OF THE OCEAN

If stood upright, the Dali would reach almost to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or about two-thirds of the way up the Empire State Building in New York.

It can carry the equivalent of almost 10,000 standard-sized metal shipping containers, and at the time of the accident was carrying nearly 4,700 containers. But while those figures are impressive, the Dali pales in comparison to the world’s largest container ships, which can carry more than 24,000 containers. There are environmental and economic advantages to operating giant container ships , but their sheer size and weight make them difficult to maneuver and stop — especially when something goes wrong.

Dali length: 984 feet (300 meters). Weight: 95,000 tons when empty.

Capacity: 10,000 20-foot (6-meter) containers.

MAYDAY CALL SAVES LIVES

The ship shares a name with one of history’s most celebrated artists, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the Dali was launched in late 2014. It’s owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, flies a Singapore flag and is powered by diesel engines.

Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the Dali for a planned trip from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the ship didn’t get far, with the crew sending a mayday call early Tuesday saying they had lost power and had no control of the steering system. Minutes later, the ship rammed one of the bridge’s columns, causing the entire structure to collapse within seconds.

The ship was moving at about 8 knots, or 9 mph (15 kph). The mayday gave just enough time for authorities to stop bridge traffic and likely prevent more deaths , but not enough time to clear the construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge. Divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of two of the workers.

All of the nearly two dozen crew members from the Dali were accounted for after the accident, with one taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

PASSED PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS

The Dali passed a June 2023 inspection in Chile. A faulty pressure gauge for the fuel heaters was identified but fixed before the vessel left the port, according to authorities. The Dali was then inspected in September by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York, and no problems were found. Before it left Baltimore, the ship underwent routine engine maintenance, according to the Coast Guard.

Federal and state officials say the crash appears to be an accident.

The Coast Guard has downloaded the voyage data recorder and sent it to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is building a timeline of what led to the crash, and a preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks. Singapore also plans to carry out its own investigation, which it says will be to identify lessons for the future rather than determine liability.

WHAT’S NEXT

In addition to trying to clear the channel floor of the bridge debris, officials will need to assess the damage to the Dali and make sure it doesn’t leak fuel or sink. Investigators found damage to at least 13 containers on the ship.

The Dali will then likely be towed back to the port and the cargo offloaded.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says it’s too early to say how long it will take to reopen the Port of Baltimore or replace the destroyed bridge. He noted it initially took five years to build the bridge .

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.
