Founded in 1912, The Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club has a large and successful junior sailing program whose participants, past and present, keep its adult sailing and racing activities vigorous. Secure in its sailing heritage, the club is proud both of the sailing accomplishments of its members and of its contributions to the broader sailing community in its first hundred years.

From the Commodore:

“The Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club is proud to become a Founding Member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. As a club with a strong sailing tradition and a two time winner of the St Petersburg Trophy, The Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club and its members are delighted to join NSHOF in preserving America’s sailing legacy and honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to American Sailing. Our members look forward to visiting this landmark for sailing enthusiasts.”

Kevin McGlynn, Commodore – Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club

When Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club was formed in 1912, the only access to Beach Haven was by ferry, and residents were using the island for extended summer vacations.

Over the first few years LEHYC acquired some property on Berkeley Avenue and built a dock.  Activities at the club included sailing races and motorboat races, parties held at the large local hotels: Baldwin and Engleside.  In 1916 the clubhouse was built and some activities were held there but the big events were still held at the hotels into the 1930s.  In 1921 the club acquired the first 4 of the LEHYC 25 foot one-design sloops to increase adult racing.  In 1923 the Skippers program was started to teach young boys sailing and seamanship.  Activities continued to expand throughout the inter-war period with additional classes, addition of the Skipperettes program  for young girls and construction of a tennis court.

After a slow period in WWII, the club began rapid expansion in the late 40s through the 60s. During this period LEHYC became well known for superior regattas and excellent race management.  LEHYC held many prestigious sailing championships including several at the National, North American or International levels.  This culminated with hosting of the NAYRU (now US Sailing) Mallory, Adams, O’Day and Championship of Champions.  At the same time several LEHYC Sailors won major events.  Mac Allen won the Moth North Americans and Jack Barclay won the International Comets at LEHYC in1963.  Other events continued and expanded, Skippers merged with Skipperettes to form one of the premier Junior Sailing Programs in the nation. Tennis Courts were added and social activities expanded.

BWE Venue Spotlight | Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club

Bwe venue spotlight , lbi weddings.

May 7, 2020

If you have been doing your research on Long Beach Island wedding venues, you are likely to have come across the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club. While weddings and special events held her are restricted to members of the club only, you can not purchase a membership with the sole intent of getting married. If you are lucky enough to be a member of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, and you are planning a wedding there, you will want to work with a wedding planner who is experienced with both the space and tented weddings. If you are not sure what goes into a tented wedding, you will want to check out this blog here about the costs and logistical concerns associated with a tented wedding or event. If you are not sure where the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club is located, it’s in Beach Haven. The Club is a few blocks further south of the busy section, ya’ know where the Chegg is.

Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club Weddings

I was so thrilled to work with club members, the McOrmond family, when Kathleen and Richard got married a few years ago. They are planned an amazing wedding, with my assistance, at the club. Here’s what I learned.

The Cannon. First, make sure you plan to shoot the cannon. We used it to signal the end of cocktail hour and the beginning of the reception. But seriously: shoot the cannon!

Full Service Catering. You will want to work with a full service catering company here. The key is “full service.” This means they take care of everything from ordering your rentals for tables, linens, glassware, etc. To providing you with a staff that will help to pull the event off seamlessly. This is essential, because when you are working with a venue that is not geared towards weddings, there will be a lot of things that will need to be considered. It’s important, no essential, to have a team that has the expertise to provide excellent food and service, while also working with the logistical parameters that a venue like this will present.

An Experienced Wedding Planner. You will want to include room in your budget for a wedding planner with experience with these types of venues. Not to ring my own bell, but there is no other planner in the NJ shore region with the amount of experience I have gained over the years with Yacht Club weddings and non-traditional venues.

Tenting. You will want to plan to tent the deck. But you will also want to make sure that if the weather is going to be absolute perfection, that you can skip it. I would also suggest that you make sure you know what the specific restrictions in terms of wind are for the tent you are using. And you will want to make sure that you have a plan if the wind is too much for the tent. Keep in mind that the tent will not go up the day of the wedding. Typically tents are installed a few days before, so that there is time for proper inspections. Trust me, the fire marshal will show up to ensure you are in compliance. I would strongly suggest that you work with a tent company that has tented the location before and is going to take care of pulling all of the permits required. If you are not working with a planner, you will want to read this blog post about tented weddings and events.

Ceremony Locations. Here you have some flexibility. You can have your ceremony on the deck over the water, move to cocktail hour in the upstairs of the Yacht Club and then, during cocktail have the deck flipped to reception space. But this will require a lot of catering and planning staff. So you will want to do that thoughtfully. And if you are maxing out the space’s capacity for guests, it might not be a great idea. Other ideas for ceremony space would be the beach in Beach Haven. I would avoid the more crowded streets, or use one of the smaller bay beaches (those would be less convenient–since they are further away with limited parking). You might also be able to grab a permit to put up a smaller ceremony tent in the park located just next to the club. Although there’s not much view and certain times of year this would not likely be a great option. A beach ceremony on the ocean side is probably your best bet, and does not require a permit. Beach Haven just asks that for gatherings of more than 100 people, that the police department is notified just so they are aware of the reason for a small crowd. You might also consider the LBI Historical Society as a backup plan for an outdoor ceremony. It’s affordably rented for $400, plus a security deposit.

If you’d like to check out my favorite Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club wedding, then here’s a gorgeous recap for your inspirational needs.

Little egg harbor yacht club wedding | s + m.

If you haven’t already, check out Wedding #1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Riverton, NJ from Stephanie and Matt’s Wedding weekend!

Wedding #2: Chapel Ceremony and Full Reception with Friends and Family

Stephanie’s family had been members of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club for 3 generations and a wedding in Beach Haven would fulfill all of her lifelong dreams. The Club had become a summer staple for Stephanie and Matt from the beginning of their relationship: they went to weekly happy hours here, had a beach house within walking distance, and Matt even proposed to Stephanie here a year before their wedding day.

So on the twenty-first of September, the day after their intimate Catholic Church wedding where Matt’s parents as sister had been married, Stephanie and Matt had their full Wedding Day. Hair-and-make-up, wedding party photos, first-look, all the tradition of a wedding day and invited their larger guest list to attend. They had their marriage blessed at Holy Trinity Church , and after a boat getaway ride for the wedding party, they made their grand entrance at the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club for the reception of their dreams.

Stephanie and Matt took weekly dance lessons to learn a choreographed first dance and surprise all of their guests. They chose the first song they sent to each other in high school for their first dance: Never Stop (wedding version) By Safety Suit . These two nailed the whole routine, especially their final dip!

Stephanie and Matt’s wedding weekend was full of emotion from the moment they entered Sacred Heart to their sparkler exit at the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club. They gracefully blended family traditions, celebrated in a way that was true to both of them, and honored a love they built over ten years. Congratulations, sweet friends. Your love is incredible and your wedding weekend was an honor to witness!

Melges 15s Make Their Regatta Debut

A little more than four months after the world debut of the Melges 15, twelve boats gathered at Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club (Beach Haven, NJ) for the inaugural Melges 15 Invitational.

Pioneered by local, Chris Fretz, LEHYC is home to Melges 15 Fleet #1 after taking delivery of six privately-owned boats in June. Fleet 1 now has nine boats and is looking forward to continued growth and helping establish other fleets on Barnegat Bay.

“This event really shows what’s possible here on the Bay with the Melges 15. When you have sailors from 18-80 years old ripping around at 15 knots together, there’s really nothing else on the market that has this level of accessibility and fun! I think every club in the BBYRA (Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association) needs these boats!” said Fretz.

Sailors were greeted by a steady 15-20 knot wind and some nasty chop on Saturday. Five races where completed on the first day of the event all sailed back to back. The day was won by Clay Johnson and Kelly McGlynn who transferred their E Scow knowledge into an excellent performance. The biggest highlight of the day was the battle between Johnson/McGlynn and the father-daughter duo of Emily and Johnny Haig in the final race of the day. Neck and neck coming into the leeward mark, each doing in excess of 15 knots, they traded gybes and swapped the lead several times until Haig was able to gybe on Johnson and sail into better pressure to seal the win.

Additional highlights included Butch and Walter Lenhard, who nailed a pin-end start to lead the fleet up the first leg of Race 4. Butch and Walter are a father-son team who got into the Melges 15 class to race together and with their kids and grandkids.

After racing, sailors debriefed onshore and had some socially distant beverages. The common themes of the day included: “We were going really fast out there” and “I don’t feel like we did FIVE races!”

After looking like the fleet would be in for some light air sailing on Day Two, the forecast and reality seemed to be out of sync. With Johnson and McGlynn heading back to Toms River, the regatta came down to a tiebreaker between the Haigs and Kyle and Alissa Rogechenko. The last race brought the action to a climax with the Haigs needing to place in the top two to clinch the win. On the last run it looked like Emily had the regatta well in hand, but a missed layline at the bottom of the final run allowed Kyle to move into the lead and put the pressure on Emily to hold onto second. Some conservative sailing up the last beat helped the Haigs hold onto second place and win the regatta.

With the inaugural Melges 15 regatta in the books, the Melges 15 Class is looking forward to continuing its exponential growth around the country. The Melges 15 Class wants to help your club build a fleet! If you have any interest in this or in the Melges 15 contact Eddie Cox, Melges, at [email protected] .
