Let's Get to Know Each Other

Let's connect, c.s. 27 sailboat.

C.S. 27 was first built in 1975, it was designed by Raymond Wall. It is a Canadian sailboat and went out of production years ago. The production of this boat stopped in 1983. C.S. Yachts built the C.S. 27 in Canada with 480 ships, which were completed between 1975 and 1983.

It is a small recreational keelboat, with a fiberglass hull. A masthead sloop rig, fixed fin keel, and a transom-hung rudder are the defining features of C.S. 27. It displaces at 6100 lb (1089 kg) and carries 2400 lb (2767 kg) of ballast. C.S. 27 has a draft of 5.17 ft (1.58 m) along with the standard iron-ballasted keel and 3.92 ft (1.19m) and the optional longer shoal draft lead-ballasted keel. Almost 90 were built with the shoal draft keel. It was first fitted with a Japanese Yanmar Y.S.E. diesel engine, and then later it was changed to Yanmar 1 G.M. model. C.S. 27 has a PHRF racing average handicap of 207 with a high of 204 and a low of 216, and the hull speed is 6.55 kn (12.13 km/h). It is generally a fast boat, and it has an actual adult size room below decks. It has a two-speed winch, pressurized freshwater system, double lifelines as well as a massive 5.8 cubic foot icebox, and it is ocean-worthy as it was built for ocean sailing.

CS 27 & 30 questions

Hello all, I have read a lot about the quality of CS boats, and although the 36T is my favourite, it's out of my price range ($20K CAD). I have seen a few 27s and 30s at the docks, but only one 27 for sale, that I was able to view on board. First impressions of the CS 27 were so-so: the pronounced tumble home and ridge line in the hull 6" below the deck joint is something I didn't expect from photos. The galley sink is pretty awkwardly placed. The head/vberth door contraption would drive me crazy; I'd probably remove the door and use a curtain. Although we're used to small spaces in our Westfalia, I'm not sure the 27 is going to be comfortable enough with long distance cruising. Also, this 27 had significant staining on the bulkheads below both chainplates. Asking price is $13500 CAD; I have no idea if this is competitive. Original YSB8 engine seemed to run well enough. If it were a heavy displacement design like a Vancouver 27, I might be able to overlook this, but it's not. So, on to the CS 30. On another thread here, the story of the crew who were rescued from their 30 during a return from Bermuda is used to illustrate that the boat is not suitable for offshore use. But I don't want to discount a boat because of one bad experience, especially since the real cause of the issues (suspected hull-deck joint leak, mast pumping, fuel leak) could not be confirmed due to the boat never being recovered. The only 30 I've seen recently was listed for $24000 CAD (it's off the market until spring), which seems reasonable based on Yachtworld comparisons. Are there any other experiences from owners of 30s (or 27s) in rough seas? I have noticed that the CS boats seem to use taller rigs than most (but also double spreaders on most models). Does this place them at higher risk in extreme conditions? I believe the 27 and 30 both have shrouds which meet at a common chainplate, with a baby fore stay. I wonder if this design contributes to mast pumping under heavy conditions? Having all shrouds share a chainplate means they better be solid. My plans are to cruise the BC inside passage to Haida Gwai, and eventually around Vancouver Island. Eventually going to Mexico from BC is also a possibility. I'd prefer to get a boat capable of this now, rather than go through the search process again in a year or two... Thanks

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The optional shoal draft model has a longer bolt-on lead keel. Draft: 3.92’/1.19m Displacement: 6500 lbs./2948 kgs. Ballast: 2800 lbs./1270 kgs. Sail Area/Disp.: 15.71 Bal./Disp.: 43.08%;Disp./Len.: 212.02 About 90 boats were fitted with these lead fins. In 1977, the rudder area was increased. CS also offered owners a rudder retrofit kit that added two inches to the forward edge to improve helm balance. Three years later, the mast was changed from a Proctor to an Isomat section, the fibreglass cabin sole was replaced with teak and holly , and cupboard doors were finished with woven cane fronts. The Yanmar YSE was replaced with the 1GM as standard equipment. Drawing shown here is from introductory brochure.
