Sail Puerto Rico & Spanish Virgin Islands

Sailing the Island of Enchantment, and Much More Besides

Puerto Rico is an understated destination, not just for what it has but for what it puts you in reach of: magical places inviting you to explore by sailboat, A yacht charter in Puerto Rico usually includes the archipelago known as the Spanish Virgin islands, the region's main sailing destination.

As an unincorporated territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is easy to access and get around. The currency is the US dollar and English is widely used along with Spanish. Puerto Rico and the islands to its east enjoy a Caribbean climate and are very welcoming of visitors. A number of operators supply bareboat and crewed charters from marinas at the eastern end of Puerto Rico island, about a one-hour drive from San Juan International Airport.

Fun and Adventure on a Puerto Rico Sailing Vacation

Easily accessible from the USA and with the full range of expected Caribbean attractions, Puerto Rico is another fine charter destination.

Your trip to Puerto Rico for a sailboat holiday may start in the capital city San Juan for some cultural experience and historical context. But as the sailing focus is squarely on the archipelago traditionally known as the Spanish Virgin Islands, your travels may well take you straight to Puerto Del Rey Marina adjacent to the town of Fajardo and Puerto Del Rey marina, one of the Caribbean's largest boat harbors.

From Fajardo  the waters of the Caribbean open up, and a short sail east brings you to the first of a string of islands that stretch all the way to South America.

Visit the Spanish Virgin Islands

Your Puerto Rico charter boat vacation will likely concentrate around the Spanish Virgin Islands, all part of the US-administered territory. The largest island is Vieques, a short sail from the mainland where you may like to spend your first (or last) night aboard. A series of fine anchorages dot the southern side of the island, one of the most popular being Ensenada Honda at the eastern end. .

Anchor in the azure waters off a white sandy Vieques beach, and your presence in the Caribbean strikes home. The island is a wonderful setting, with a scattering of barrios and a large wildlife refuge where the US Navy's bomb testing range is consigned firmly to history. Mosquito Bay is a special place, the brightest bio-luminescent bay in the world where the conditions are just right for the trapped organisms to shine.

Enjoy the Caribbean's natural island beauty

Sailing northward a short distance brings you to the group of islands centered on Culebra. There are numerous places to explore around here, both in the water and out. Nature is at its finest in this relatively undeveloped place, and the waters teem with marine life. Of the world's seven turtle species, three make the Virgin islands home.

Among the most popular spots for a charter stopover in this corner of the Spanish Virgin Islands are Culebrita, Cayo Luis Pena and the fine anchorage at the town of Culebra itself. This is the place to indulge in some local shopping and take the opportunity to re-provision.

From Culabrita it should only take three to four hours to get back to base at Fajardo. But to extend your stay among the islands, spend a final night at Isla Palaminos. The island is highly developed with resorts, and day-trippers visit by ferry. But there's still a nice peaceful bay or two where you can tuck in for the night and watch the sun set, before returning to the marina for your 10.00am disembarkation. Perhaps to see more of what Puerto Rico has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

Where are you located.

We are a convenient 5-10 minute drive from the major hotels in the San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde area in Puerto Rico. We are located in San Juan Bay Marina at Slip A72. If you are taking a cab, ask your driver to take you to San Juan Bay Marina and reference where the Sizzler Restaurant is at. Once at the Marina, walk through the boatyard towards the lower part of Sizzler Restaurant. Once at sea level, go past a Jetski rental kiosk towards the long dock with boats on either side. Our slip is on the left past the white gate that leads to the dock. Slip numbers are marked on the floor.

How do I book a sail?

You may book online here, or by clicking any of the “book now” buttons. We ask that you call, text, or email us for same-day bookings to ensure availability even if the calendar doesn’t show it. Online bookings are handled through a secure and encrypted provider accepting most major credit cards.

How should I dress?

For daysails we recommend cool, light clothing, hat, sunglasses and sunblock. While San Juan Bay has very calm waters and you will usually not get wet, there is always the possibility of some small splashes of water. Sunset sails have usually calmer breeze and cooler temperatures so you may dress more comfortably, however we do recommend light clothing. If you choose to go out into the ocean, the possibilities of getting wet are more likely as we will be sailing in bigger seas. No shoes allowed on-board.

At what time should I arrive for my sail?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your sail for a proper safety briefing and preparations. Sails depart sharp on time. Plan to be on time as in consideration to others that may be present we can not delay departure time. Failure to be on time for departure will result in forfeiting full fare or a $50 rebooking fee.

How many passengers are allowed on a boat?

We can accommodate 2-6 passengers for a personal, intimate experience. If you wish your sail to be private you may opt for the Private Charter or reserve the boat for your group. If you are sailing alone we ask that you contact us so we may schedule you with a current group.

Do I have to aid in handling the boat?

Your crew will take care of all the boat handling maneuvers so you may sit back and relax, but you are welcome to take part if you want a more hands-on experience.

Will I get seasick?

As we usually sail in very calm waters, the possibilities of getting seasick are almost zero. However, if you have gotten motion sickness at other times, we do recommend taking some remedies beforehand.

What drinks are included?

We offer complimentary soda, water, local beer, rum & coke and special rum punch for adults over 18 years of age. Sunset sails also include Spanish Cava or Prosecco.

Are there age restrictions to sail?

We welcome everyone to enjoy the wonderful experience of sailing! However, US Coast Guard requires children under 13 to wear a lifejacket at all times. There is also certain level of physical exertion that may take place to board and move around so we advise caution for the elderly and persons with mobility issues and serious medical conditions.

Can I bring my own music?

Of course! We encourage you to do so. Our speaker is bluetooth ready so you may connect your own device and use your personal playlist. We use Spotify and Pandora and may look up your favorite station.

Are the booking times shown here the only ones available for a sail?

While the times shown are our standard offerings we are always available for special requests. Give us a call or email us to make special arrangements

What If I have to cancel my reservations?

We have a 48 hour cancellation notice policy for full refund. 48 hours or less cancellations forfeit 50% fare. 24 hour cancellations forfeit full fare. No shows, late to departure time or same-day booking cancellations will forfeit 100% fare.

What happens if my sail is cancelled due to weather?

We want you to enjoy a great experience while sailing with us so we would reschedule your sail for another day when the weather is ideal. If this would not be possible due to your travel plans, we would offer a full refund. The decision to cancel due to weather rests solely on the Captain. Tropical weather can change quite rapidly so some decisions to cancel might be last minute, however we always take into consideration your time and alternate plans so we try to always cancel at least an hour in advance from our scheduled departure time.

Anything else I should know?

Just be ready for a great sailing experience! If you do have any additional questions, please feel free to call, text or email us and we will gladly clear up any doubts.

We had a group of 8 and the crew was fantastic! We did not experience anything but excellent service. The crew was very engaged and kept the trip fun, specific instructions were given regarding lunch and times of departure. Would definitely do again.

The crew was so friendly and welcoming, the food was outstanding, the drinks were even better and they didn’t stop serving! We had a child (7 years old) who had never been snorkeling and the crew did great having what he needed to learn. Will absolutely be back to enjoy! Keep up the amazing work!

It was a very nice trip my kids and us will never forget! Thank you guys! Will see you again this winter!

Extremely fun, absolutely beautiful catamaran trip with lively helpful crew! Lunch was perfect, music was as well, snorkeling was amazing and all equipment was above average. The island of Icacos is breathtaking.

Stanley J. Castro, born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a yachting industry veteran with over 20 years of experience. His career began as a teenager when he started working as a boat cleaner and later as a salesman at Industrial & Marine Service, Inc., a boat dealer and brokerage firm his father founded in 1975.

In 1995 he assumed the role of general manager of the firm. He gained diverse experience in sales and maintenance in the Caribbean marketplace for Sea Ray, Bertram, Lazzara, Hydra-Sports, Meridian and Scout, among others. This role allowed him to build strong relationships with all parties and areas of the boating business including manufacturers, bankers, brokers and consumers.

A billfish sport aficionado, with a great understanding of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Stanley is an active participant and leader in the Billfish Tournaments series in the Caribbean, where he has won several white and blue marlin honors. His favorite fishing seasons and locations for fishing are the May-June full moon time in Cap Cana, Dominican Republic and August-September, known as the “big blues” in San Juan and the “north drop” zone in St. Thomas.

Aside from his vast experience within the yachting industry, Stanley stands out for being goal oriented and results driven. There are 3 traits that can best describe his day-to-day interaction with owners and customers: humbleness, honesty, and hard work.

Stanley's yacht brand expertise includes Sea Ray Boats and yachts (20+ years representative), Bertram (10 years), Hydra-Sports (12 years) and Scout boats (2 years).

Luis M. Ayala was born in Puerto Rico, and since birth his father introduced him to boating. His father owned a boat parts and service store in the 1980s, where Luis learned to take his first steps. At age 10, with a lot of interest in boats and always wanting to captain the boat, Luis took the captain's role on his father's 38’ convertible.

Growing up in a boating family, Luis has always looked for something to give him adrenaline, and from his teenage years, he cruised with his family’s boat in the Caribbean looking for places to water ski or go fishing.

In 1997 while studying business administration, Luis began a part-time job at Industrial & Marine Service, Inc. working in several areas of the business. After working in the first ever boat show in Puerto Rico, Luis sold his first boat, a Sea Ray 34, and rapidly discovered his passion for yacht sales.

After graduating with a degree in business administration, Luis worked full time for the Industrial & Marine sales team and several years later was promoted to Sales Manager. Industrial & Marine is a boat dealer and brokerage firm established in 1975 representing the prestigious brands Sea Ray, Lazzara, Hydra-Sports, Meridian, Scout Boats and Sea Vee Boats in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

All these years in the yachting business gave Luis vast experience and strong relationships in all aspects of the industry working directly with banks, manufacturers, brokers and a exclusive clientele.

Luis has dedicated his career in yacht sales to building a solid reputation making sure all his clients are 100% satisfied before and after the sale. The relationship and trust he builds with his clients has helped him sell more than 700 boats during his career, a priceless asset when talking yacht sales.

In addition to his yachting industry experience, in 2010, Luis became a Licensed Insurance Broker; this knowledge has given him an edge when properly guiding clients during the yacht buying process.

Testimonial for Luis Ayala

Luis has been my mentor and most trusted adviser when it comes to purchasing and selling my boats for the past five years. I am pleased to say that he is a very professional honest person to whom I owe my upmost respect when it comes to buying a boat and to credit for that we are in the process of getting our third boat with Luis as our wingman - Luis M. Testimonial for Carlos:

To Whom It May Concern,

Working with Carlos Esteves on the purchase of my 65 Marquis was an awesome experience. The process was fair and not stressful at all. He handled all the contacts and paperwork. Definitely recommended for matching your boat “needs” with the right boat. Before and especially after the sale, always willing to take his time to answer questions and offer help. That means a lot to me. I’ll be back when it’s time for a bigger boat! - Neftali Lluch, PE

Itinerary Puerto Rico

sailboats puerto rico

After awaking and having a nice breakfast, you may want to take one last snorkel on Pyramid Reef before heading off due east to Culebra and Cayo Luis Peña. The sail is about 13 NM and you’ll find your anchorage/moorings on the southwest side of the Island. This anchorage is a sea turtle sanctuary, and features a great snorkeling reef and white sand beach. It’s perfectly fine to stay overnight here, but you may want to continue a couple of miles eastward to Playa Melones on Culebra. Here you’ll find some moorings right off a nice beach with great snorkeling. The advantage of Melones is that you are only a short dinghy ride from the town of Dewey, the capitol of Culebra, where the ferries arrive. Dewey features many small shops and some very interesting restaurants and cafés. Make dinner plans for the Island’s favorite spot, Mamacita’s. This quaint island spot can be reached by dinghy, midway up the channel that cuts through the island. Mamacita’s also offers a live music on the weekends, and impromptu gatherings of local musicians can happen any day of the week.

sailboats puerto rico

On day three, set your course to sail on the south side of Culebra, stopping for a snorkel in Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo or Melones. Here you’ll find plenty of free moorings and excellent snorkeling. Afterwards, sail eastwards to Bahia Tortuga on Culebrita Island, acclaimed as one of the top ten Caribbean beaches, not bad considering how many beaches there are in the Caribbean! You’ll want to spend some time here exploring the island. In addition to the picture perfect gin clear water and white sand beach, Culebrita features a historic lighthouse, which you can hike up to. In addition, don’t miss the Jacuzzis or “pozitas” as named in Spanish, natural tide pools along the north side of the island.

After time in Culebrita, take a nice downwind sail to the southern channel to Ensenada Honda, Dulebra’s main harbor. After setting anchor just behind Cayo Pirata, you can dinghy ashore and tie up at the Dinghy Dock Restaurant. Enjoy a late breakfast or early lunch while taking in the view of Ensenada Honda. The Dinghy Dock is a great spot to leave your tender while exploring the rustic town of Dewey. You can do some shopping and replenish provisions or you can even rent a scooter or jeep and explore the Island. You can opt to stay put here for the evening and have dinner at Sally’s, another nice spot, or sail down the bay of Ensenada Honda to the anchorage of Dakiti. Dakiti features many moorings in a calm reef-bound harbor. Just around the bend from the anchorage of Dakiti is Bahia Fulladoza, where you’ll find Club Seaborne, a boutique hotel with one of the finest restaurants on the island, and the Bahia Bay Resort, perfect for drinks and an amazing view. Another great mooring option for the night is Bahia Aldomovar, just outside and to the east of Ensenada Honda. Bahia Aldomovar is a calm mangrove harbor with a coral reef barrier and faces east towards St. Thomas.

On day five you’ll set sail southbound towards the island of Vieques. Enjoy a nice beam reach as you sail towards to the eastern tip of the Island. After rounding the eastern tip , you’ll sail along downwind to Bahia de la Chiva. This remote anchorage spot is unique in its exclusivity as it’s relatively inaccessible without a boat. You’ll enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Bahia Chiva, which features a large horseshoe shaped harbor with an island, Isla Chiva, in the middle of the bay. There’s a long white sand beach to explore and two great snorkeling spots: “Blue Tang” reef and Isla Chiva.

After breakfast and possibly a morning snorkel or hike, cast the mooring line loose and sail leisurely down the undeveloped south coast of Vieques to Sun Bay. Cruise in and find an anchorage on the eastern side of the bay and enjoy some nice snorkeling or a long walk on the beach. Sun Bay is just around the bend from Puerto Real, where the lively town of Esperanza is. Esperanza features its “Malecón” or in English, “waterfront walk”. Here you’ll find quaint little shops and several nice dining establishments along the strip. Lazy Jacks is fun for drinks and bar food. Duffy’s is great for lunch or dinner but if you want a real gastronomic treat, try Bili or El Quenepo, all located along the Malecón strip.

On day seven you’ll continue sailing eastward to Punta Arenas, located on the western coast of Vieques. Here you’ll find lots of coastline where you can drop anchor. In the northwest tip and running down the southwest side of Vieques, you find Green Beach, a beautiful great snorkel location with many turtles. Punta Arenas is a great place to watch the sun set over the Caribbean horizon and if you choose to stay here overnight, it’s only a 2.5 hr. sail back to the SailCaribe base at Marina Puerto del Rey. You can opt to sail back up the east coast of Puerto Rico to Cayo Icacos, just east of the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico. Cayo Icacos has a spectacular white sand beach island with a couple of great snorkeling spots and is only 5NM away from the SailCaribe base. Once back at the base, after re-fueling and de-briefing, you’ll be free to go and explore the multitude of treasures that the big island of Puerto Rico has to offer.

sailboats puerto rico

Arrive at Marina Puerto del Rey at 9:30a.m. to board the vessel by 10:00a.m. After accommodating personal belongings and provisions, you’ll begin the technical and chart briefings. This takes about 2-3 hours and once completed you’ll be ready to set sail. You’ll sail about 4 nautical miles to the northeast from Marina Puerto del Rey to Isla Palomino. Here you’ll find a nice harbor with plenty of free moorings maintained by the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico. In the middle of the mooring field is Pyramid Reef, which is at swimming distance from the boat and features a variety of marine life. Other options while moored-off Isla Palomino are visiting the island restaurant and Tiki Bar operated by El Conquistador Resort. You may also like to take a dinghy ride to Cayo Palominito, which looks like a postcard perfect island oasis with its clear turqious waters and white sparkling sand.

What essentials to pack for a boat trip in Puerto Rico?

It is always a good idea to travel light when renting a boat in Puerto Rico. Here are some practical light weight items which you might consider for your boating trip:

  • Cotton towels are very absorbent, eco-friendly, super soft and comfortable, and can be used as a beach blanket, a towel and even a throw in the evening or in the airplane.

Apply it according to the instructions on your sunscreen bottle, usually every 2 hours. Remember, a lip balm will protect your lip skin from the sun and wind. Always keep it in your pocket.
  • Aloe-vera cooling gel . There is always a chance that sunburn might happen while sailing. So apply aloe-vera gel and your skin temperature will drop a few degrees.

What to do in Puerto Rico if I rent a boat?

Relax and sail around the island and explore all the beauty of Puerto Rico.

It takes a short boat ride to explore Vieques island which, according to the Guinness World Records, has the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world - Mosquito Bay. It is definitely worth staying overnight on your boat or yacht near the bay to enjoy the spectacular natural glow. Low light pollution and a new or crescent moon will make the night show much brighter.

The adventure of sailing a yacht in Puerto Rico could bring you to the Island of Culebra - another amazing destination with its white sand beaches surrounded by waveless turquoise waters. To name a few Culebra beaches, Flamenco Beach is often ranked among the best in the world and Tortuga is a perfect place for snorkelling with green turtles.

Remember: Use your sunscreen every 2 hours to protect your skin. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Cover your shoulders with a cotton shirt.

Hydrate – keep sipping water from your water bottle on the go. Remember, if you are thirsty, it is a strong signal that your body really needs hydration.

Find out everything about sailing to Puerto Rico: itineraries, ports, yacht rental options, & other useful sailing information. Get our help! Puerto Rico is one of the northernmost islands in the Caribbean region. The name speaks for itself – Puerto Rico means “rich port” in Spanish. Also, the country has a rich flora and fauna, not to mention their culture and gastronomy. We can choose from several routes to take in the region. Besides a large number of berths and ports, we can explore many brilliant islands here, but there are also notorious sea passages here that are challenging to navigate.

Sail around Puerto Rico

This article summarizes the following:

Let’s get to know Puerto Rico

Sailing to puerto rico – from the north, 2 weeks from the bahamas to puerto rico, sailing to puerto rico from the east, a week sailing trip from the bvi to puerto rico, sailing to puerto rico from the south, 14 days catamaran tour from antigua to puerto rico – one-way, sailing to puerto rico from the west, 1-week sailing itinerary from the dominican republic to puerto rico, marine gas around puerto rico.

The island country is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean; the deepest trench of the Atlantic Ocean called Puerto Rico Trench is located on the boundary of the two. It belongs to an archipelago consisting of Vieques, Culebra, Cayo Luis Pena, Palomino and 28 other small uninhabited islands. The tropical heat, the marvellous sea and the beautiful islands and ports all make this area one of the most beloved sailing destinations in the world.

There are several ports of entry on the island, but we must be aware of the country’s unique status. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, but visitors arriving from the US still need to have the required permissions. If we arrive from outside the territorial waters of the islands, we are required to contact the local customs authorities no later than 24 hours before our entry. Non-American citizens must have a valid visa like in the case of entering the United States. When we arrive, we can arrange our clearance in most larger port towns (e.g. San Juan, Ponce, Palmas del Mar, Mayagüez).

Being a tropical area, the average temperature in Puerto Rico is 28° Celsius. The weather does not change drastically; the warmest month is June, but the average temperature is around 24° Celsius even in the coldest month, January. When planning our journey, we should definitely calculate with the hurricane season, which is typical in the area. This period is between June and November. If we are planning to go sailing during this time, we need to be extremely careful and cautious; the trip is definitely not recommended for beginners. The trade winds are present in the area – this means that the air moves continuously in one direction for a specific amount of time.

Coasts and bays in Puerto Rico

In case of a trip from the north to the southwest, it is recommended to leave from one of the Bahama Islands, navigating along with the Turks and Caicos Islands. This way, we can get to the northern corner of Puerto Rico through Mona Passage. As the northern part is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, navigating might be complicated if we get into the trade winds’ passages. It’s a convention among sailors to stop at Samana, located in the northern part of the Dominican Republic, and then continue their trip towards Puerto Rico. This can be a one-day rest, or we can wait a few days more until the weather conditions are more ideal.

Another option is to take a one-day break on Saona Island in the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic. We can wait for the suitable winds and for the sea to work for us here, making the conditions ideal to continue towards the east. Isla Mona can be found in the app. 70 kilometres from here; we can find protected anchorages inside the coral reef. Puerto Rico’s western shores can be found another 70 kilometres from here.

Mona Passage

Mona Passage is a sea passage connecting the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Its depth varies between 4-500 metres. It has a northwestern-southeast direction and is one of the most important passages between the Atlantic Ocean and the Panama Canal. It is also among the most challenging passages in the Caribbean region as it is full of tidal waves, created by the surrounding islands and elongated sandy shores. The passage lies between the Dominican Cabo Engaño and the Puerto Rican Cabo Rojo. There are three islands in the passage: Isla Mona, Isla Monito, and Isla Desecheo.

Ports on the northern coast of Puerto Rico

San Juan, the capital, is a place that we must absolutely visit when we are in Puerto Rico. The city has a vibrant, charming atmosphere. The port is full of shops and sights to see, and one of the most beautiful parts in town, Old San Juan, can be found nearby. It is very easy to get to the port: there is an easterly natural passage which is also marked. We can find the San Juan Yacht Club and San Juan Bay Marina in an area of 2.5 kilometres inside the dock; the former on the left, the latter on the right side. The area designated for docking is on the west; the depth of water there is app. 9 metres. The port is very well-equipped: they offer temporary docking, fuel, and boat maintenance.

Club Nautico San Juan can be found right next to San Juan Bay Marina. The place is world-famous for the events they organize and for the hospitality of the locals. Visitors who dock at other places are also allowed to use their establishments. In the case of all the places listed above, we can get everything we may need for our boat, from parts to accessories. The fort of Castillo San Felipe del Morro is also towering here. It was built to provide protection for the bay from the invaders arriving on the sea; it has a rich history. If you are enthusiastic about history, you will find this building very exciting. The fort, which is several hundreds of years old, commemorates several sea battles of the past; it also functioned as an American military base in the 20th century.

Ports in Puerto Rico

Arecibo is located app. 40 kilometres from the western corner of Puerto Rico. If we happen to face the roaring trade winds, we can find shelter here, even though the area doesn’t provide full protection on the windswept sea. If the draught of our boat doesn’t exceed 2 metres, we can anchor at Arecibo Yacht Club. The town itself is beautiful – rich in architectural and cultural treasure. Many consider it the northern equivalent of Ponce in the south.

On this route, we can get to Puerto Rico from the north and the west. We can leave from Turk and Caicos Islands or extend our trip by leaving from the Bahamas, Nassau, or Exuma. We can get to any of the islands on a plane. This is a very challenging trip, being on the bucket list of many sailors. We almost always have to do greater distances during the trip; the southernmost Caicos Island is almost 150 kilometres away from the Dominican Lupero. This passage is difficult since besides the trade winds, we also have to face the equatorial currents and the enormous sea. The section between Lupero and Santana is not easy either.

Catamaran itinerary from the Bahamas to Puerto Rico

When sailing from the east, it is best to navigate from the direction of the British Virgin Islands. We will find the American and the Spanish Virgin Islands (Saint Crox, Saint John, Saint Thomas, Vieques, Culebra) on this route. Its main advantage is that there are several docking places and rest areas on these islands. This is also a popular route, as there are many tiny and beautiful islands located after one another in a relatively small area, offering marvellous landscape, nice beaches and of course great docking places.

Ports and islands on the east coast

Cayo obispo (isleta marina).

Cayo Obsipo lies near Fajardo; it is easily accessible from all directions. Thanks to the apartments, it is easy to spot the island even from a greater distance. We can anchor in the local port as well as a bit further to the east. They have a full service including Wi-Fi and boat towing services. It is very popular among sailors. There is a beautiful passage behind Cayo Ahogado, leading from the western side of Isleta Marina almost all the way to Isla Pineros. Although it is not marked, it is still a pleasant route definitely worth trying.

Ports in Puerto Rico

Culebra is a member of the Spanish Virgin Islands. It is located 27 kilometres from the east coast of Puerto Rico. The island is really peaceful, with no restaurant chains, big crowds or giant hotels – only smaller, quiet restaurants and beautiful beaches. There are several great berths in the southwestern corner of the island and also in Ensanada Malena. The latter is close to Punta del Soldado, which is a great scuba-diving spot. Ensenada Honda is among the most popular ports on the island. It is protected from all directions, and the stiff sand on the sea bottom is ideal for anchoring. Most boats usually dock in the northwestern part, but it is recommended to keep searching for the ideal anchorage.

Another beautiful island east of Puerto Rico is Vieques. There are many amazing ports here. Sun Bay, for instance, is a wonderful bay offering free berths. Puerto Mosquito is also unique since it is a bioluminescent bay. The depth of water is only 2 metres – or even less during low tide – in the narrowest part of the port’s entrance. However, the anchorage is perfect even in case the presence of strong winds. It is forbidden to use the engine of the boat here – we should use the designated attachment points. The other bioluminescent bay nearby is Puerto Ferro. The entrance of the bay is indicated by limestone formations and a few caves – a large amount of limestone is a wonderful sight. We can find the docking area east of the centre.

Sailing trip from the BVI to Puerto Rico

Day 1. Nanny Cay, Tortola – Frenchman’s Cay, Soper’s Hole 8, 60 km (5, 35 mi) Day 2. Frenchman’s Cay – Hans Lollik Island 21, 00 km (13, 05 mi) Day 3. Hans Lollik Island – Santa Maria Bay, Saint Thomas 10, 10 km (6, 27 mi) Day 4. Santa Maria Bay – Culebrita – Dewey, Culebra 32, 10 km (19, 95 mi) Day 5. Culebra – Sun Bay Marina, Fajardo, Puerto Rico 46, 40 km (28, 83 mi) Day 6. Fajardo – Cayo Icacos 6, 70 km (4, 16 mi) Day 7. Cayo Icacos – Loíza – San Juan 56, 30 km (34, 98 mi)

Venezuela is a southern “neighbour” of Puerto Rico. We will not find any land for hundreds of kilometres after Curacao and Aruba, in the northern part of Venezuela. So if we want to travel to Puerto Rico from the south, we should go along the Lesser Antilles. Grenada is fairly close to the northeastern corner of Venezuela and is followed by other islands, so it is a great starting point. However, since we have to do longer distances, we should leave from a closer island; for example, Antigua. The combination of the winds typically has an eastern or southeastern direction, so it is recommended to go straight towards the north, and then turn west at the Leeward Islands.

If we navigate on this route, we will not face any serious obstacles except one unmarked island. Isla Aves lies 180 kilometres from the southwestern corner of Guadeloupe. We must be careful here: since this is a small area, it is easy not to spot it, and the place might not show up on our navigation either.

Ports and islands on the southern coast of Puerto Rico

Bahia de jobos.

We will find this port southeast of the entrance between Cayos de Barca and Cayos Caribes. The area consists mostly of mangrove swamps and ports. The part west of Cayo Puerta is very well-protected – it is often used as a shelter from hurricanes. There are several great anchorages in Bahida de Jobos. It is a perfect place for those who are only looking for a protected, quiet port instead of preferring to go to the beach.

Jauca is a small town south of Puerto Rico. There are great anchorages, but they are not always fully protected from the western and southeastern winds. We can find the town’s port on the southern side of Bahida de Rincon.

The southern town is really unique, so we must definitely visit it. It has a giant port, and is protected well; there are also great anchorages after Ponce Yacht and Fishing Club. Here are some free berths at the club from time to time, and there is also a marina for small boats that can be used for a daily fee. There are shower cabins and restaurants here, and we can also get fuel. People are very nice and hospitable. The place has a disadvantage, though, if we want to explore the downtown: it is quite far from the dock.

Isla Caja de Muertos

Coasts and islands in Puerto Rico

Saba Island – Culebra, Ensanada Honda 30, 65 km (19, 05 mi) Day 13. Ensenada Honda – Isla Palominos 34, 70 km (21, 56 mi) Day 14. Isla Palominos – Puerto Rico, Fajardo Puerto, del Ray Marina 10, 00 km (6, 22 mi)

The only challenge we will face if we arrive from the western part of the Caribbean region is the trade winds. They should not be a serious problem though, due to the presence of catabatic winds coming from the mountains of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. (These are freezing onshore breezes that blow down the slopes at night). They are able to alleviate the impact of the strong trade winds within a radius of 5-8 kilometres of the island. If we are lucky, we can navigate towards east more easily on the port tack, with the help of these winds. However, if the conditions are less ideal, we must use the engine of the boat due to the flat sea.

Ports and islands on the west coast of Puerto Rico

Mayagüez is located on the west side of the island. It is the third-largest town in Puerto Rico. It is surrounded by a large bay, and unlike many western basins, its port is well-protected. This is also the point of entry where we can arrange our clearance at the local customs office.

This tiny island is located in the northeastern part of Mona Passage. It is about halfway between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The entire island is an uninhabited natural preserve. There are nearly 200 caves here preserving the traces of ancient aboriginals and Spanish conquerors. There is also a lighthouse on the island which is more than a hundred years old; it looks just like the Eiffel Tower. The docking area is fairly small, but we can still find anchorage quite easily as the dock is long enough. The lagoon is narrow and is barely 2 metres deep. Isla Mona is a popular spot among divers as well, thanks to the colourful and exotic sea life of South Gardens.

Sailing to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic
