Swimming pools and superyachts are a match made in heaven, with an onboard pool richly enhancing the yacht charter experience. Whether it's to take a sunrise dip in oasis-like solitude, unwind on the aft deck with friends, champagne in hand, or make a thrilling splash with those dearest: a swimming pool is the ideal setting for defining moments in untold comfort.

Freshwater or saltwater, heated or ice-cold, interior or exterior: yacht swimming pool options are practically endless. Features are plentiful too: from counter-current jets to swim bars to glass bottoms, to underwater lights and even pools that transform into dancefloors at the click of a button. A magical onboard escape, here are our favorite charter yachts with swimming pools that give you a true taste of the superyacht lifestyle.

Superyacht FLYING FOX

Builder: Lurssen

Delivered: 2019

yacht swimming net

The 136m (446ft) superyacht FLYING FOX  is the world's largest charter yacht to date, so it should come as no surprise that she also features one of the most impressive swimming pools: a sprawling 12m spectacular that stretches out across her main deck aft.

It enjoys an elevated position overlooking the swim platform — which is more than 22.5m wide no less. From here, charter guests can take advantage of incredible views and the convenient direct connection to the beach club below.  Glittering mosaic tiles contrast against cream sun pads flanking the space, and provide ample seating for guests to relax while soaking up the sun. A TV screen is positioned forward for guests to indulge in all-day entertainment.

As the sun sets over the horizon light gently illuminates the pool: an idyllic backdrop for a waterside aperitif or an evening dip aglow.

On the sundeck, guests can slip into the raised spa pool which is conveniently located right next to the lavish outdoor lounge, dining area and full wet bar.

There is also a large Jacuzzi pool which is surrounded by plush sunpads on the bridge deck aft, and an expansive beach club that opens up onto a huge bathing platform, allowing guests to kick back and rejuvenate in ultimate style.

One of her most outstanding features is of course, her sweeping swim deck featuring a 6-meter glass-fronted swimming pool, with steps leading to a waterside beach club and swim platform for easy access to the sea and onto the yacht’s water toys, including the ever-popular electric foiling boards and a raft of inflatables.

Relaxation and entertainment opportunities continue up on her sundeck, featuring an additional glass-fronted pool, convenient island bar and shaded areas that can be closed off to the elements or left open for a welcome breeze.

It's certainly the focal point from dawn to dusk. By day, when the sun hits the water, the tiles shimmer in shades of deep blue, rich turquoise and soft cerulean, mimicking the ripple of the ocean. When night falls, it's the perfect setting for champagne soirées under a blanket of stars, when the pool is gloriously illuminated.

She boasts a much-celebrated infinity pool with a glass aft complete with a convertible platform. This impressive feat of engineering means her pool has myriad functions: it can be raised slightly to offer safer swimming for children, become an open space for a dining area,  turn into a dazzling dancefloor or even act as a helicopter landing pad.

Superyacht CHRISTINA O

Builder: Canadian Vickers

Delivered: 1943 (Refit: 2017)

aerial shot of superyacht Christina O's classic and vintage custom mosaic pool

Classic  99m (325ft) superyacht CHRISTINA O single-handedly crafted the superyacht playbook as a floating pleasure palace for her previous owners, Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy.  Today, her exterior styling and timeless interiors act as a nostalgic vignette to the golden era of yachting.

The vessel is home to the world-famous Onassis swimming pool, engraved with a faithful copy of a mosaic mural depicting a Minoan bull that originally appeared at the ancient palace of Knossos in Greece. The pool can be raised flush to the deck to transform into a functional space or turn into a dance floor for guests to shimmy the night away.

Motor yacht LADY LENA

Builder: Sanlorenzo

Aerial shot of glass bottom swimming pool and side deck of superyacht Christina O

A triumph of dynamic design, the  52m (170ft) luxury yacht LADY LENA  aims to impress with spacious social areas, light-drenched interiors and precise attention to Art Nouveau styling. The finest embodiment of this is her large glass-bottomed pool (in typical Sanlorenzo fashion) that gently suffuses a beautiful turquoise light onto the beach club below. In tandem, there are also fold-down terraces at either side of the beam where sunpads, deck chairs, and tables can be placed to create a social seating space.

Superyacht OKTO

yacht swimming net

What do we love about the  66m (217ft) superyacht OKTO ? She's a visually striking delight from bow to stern. Her aft deck infinity pool is a sight to behold: offering picture-perfect 360-degree views. It can be both a salt or freshwater pool, but whichever you choose, you can rest assured that you will be able to swim in the utmost comfort and in total tranquility.

Yacht LADY S

bright and airy shot of designer swimming pool surrounded by off white and cream couture seating on charter yacht Lady S

93m (305ft) superyacht LADY S is the epitome of modern minimalism, and this theme elegantly extends to her aft deck glass-bottom swimming pool.

The pool's design has been optimized to ensure the entire charter party can enjoy the space to the fullest. She boasts separate shaded and sunning areas for those desiring bronzing opportunities and a social hub. And should they so wish, guests can try out the waterfall shower head floating above the center of the pool with various pressures and features. The pool area also provides an excellent connection to the beach club on the main deck below. Together, they fuse into one cohesive haven onboard, thanks to a pair of staircases that lead into the area below.

yacht swimming net

Superyacht MADSUMMER

aerial shot of 12 meter luxury swimming pool and swimming platform of charter yacht Madsummer

95m (312ft) superyacht MADSUMMER 's 12m swimming pool appears built into the main deck aft like a carefully cut sapphire; a gem enclosed by sizeable and welcoming sun pads and high glass bulwarks offering privacy and protecting the area from harsh winds. It's an utterly charming spot where yacht charter guests can spend most, if not all, of their time blissfully swimming laps or sliding into the water for a soak.

Delivered: 2013

yacht swimming net

Upon stepping onto  the 72m (236ft) superyacht AXIOMA 's main deck aft, you will be immediately greeted with the vessel's crowning glory: her sprawling infinity swimming pool. Christina O superyacht swimming pool.

It all began in 1910 with RMS Olympic , the first ship to have an onboard heated swimming pool. Its famous sistership, RMS Titanic , followed a year later with a deep saltwater heated pool on the middle deck. Reserved for the exclusive use of first-class passengers, the pool formed part of the ocean liner’s Turkish bath complex. Male and female passengers were not allowed to bathe at the same time.

Fast forward 100 years and the appeal of an onboard swimming pool has not waned. In fact, it’s become a prerequisite for many yacht owners. In 2000, the 303-foot Tatoosh exploded the concept of swimming pools aboard yachts, thanks to a large contra-flow pool with a lifting floor. Then came Octopus three years later with its massive, glass-bottomed raised pool, followed by Alfa Nero ’ s aft deck infinity raised pool with a glass waterfall.

Swimming-pool water features are now a standalone trend. When designer Igor Lobanov designed Jubilee (now named Kaos ) he used a waterfall as an architectural divider to separate the pool from the alfresco dining area. At night, the pool lights up, adding another dimension to the yacht’s evening ambience.

Today, with the advent of beach clubs and multiple spa features that create the ultimate Zen lifestyle, superyacht swimming pools are rapidly multiplying, says yacht designer Theodoros Fotiadis. “Owners want more than one pool on their yacht, as the convenience of swimming in a heated pool is more appealing than the reality of swimming lengths in the ocean,” he tells Robb Report . “Owners also want to be able to both socialize with guests and relax in private, all while never having to leave their yacht, so having more than one pool or hot tub makes a lot of sense.”

While the size of a pool is usually dictated by the length and volume of the yacht, it seems swimming pools are where owners are willing to sacrifice other features. From main deck pools that steal coveted real estate from interior lounges to sun-deck pools that require structural engineering, the growing desire to give more outdoor deck space to aquatic amenities shows how serious the pool game has become.

Here are nine of the most spectacular pools on the water right now.

‘Plvs Vltra’

yacht swimming net

When the owner of 243-foot Plvs Vltra submitted his design brief, he made sure a large swimming pool on the main deck aft was top of his list. The pool is big enough to entertain the entire family, has counter-current jets for lap swimming and is surrounded by oversized sunpads and a cocktail bar. It’s visible from the owner’s deck and leads down to the amidships spa that incorporates a second mosaiced spa pool with sea views, a massage area, a steam room, a bar, and a sauna. When the time comes for calmer water action, a Jacuzzi on the sun deck answers the call.

‘M’Brace’ (ex-Elandess)

yacht swimming net

The 246-foot M’Brace is defined by a “sea terrace” sun deck where the owners can spend the entire day. Its centerpiece is a pool measuring 8 by 26 feet, filled with 22 tons of fresh water warmed via waste-heat recovery. A glass wall at one end is where the adults view the grandchildren splashing about from a large seating area, dining table, or cocktail bar. The glass bottom doubles as a skylight that casts dappled sunlight on the circular central staircase. As simple as it sounds to install a pool on the top deck, Abeking & Rasmussen had to use hidden beams to distribute the weight of the pool to the outer edges of the yacht’s superstructure and down to the hull.

‘Kensho’

yacht swimming net

The first sight that greets guests when they step aboard 246-foot Kensho is a vast lower deck infinity pool, complete with a cutaway glass side. When looking out to sea, the edge of the pool appears to bleed into the ocean, producing stunning sea-level views. When viewed from the dock, the pool seems to continue deep into the yacht’s interior. The shape of the pool is styled after a manta ray, while the walls and stairs on the pool deck look as though they’ve been carved by the sea. The pool forms one part of the beach club and complements the yacht’s green-blue metallic exterior paint job, chosen to blend in with the aquatic surroundings.

‘Eva.4Eva’

yacht swimming net

Eva.4eva is one of only a handful of yachts to have a pool located forward, rather than aft, where guests can soak in peace. Typically reserved for storing tenders or adorned with sun lounges, the foredeck aboard the 141-foot Mangusta Oceano 43 converts into a quiet, private retreat with a glass-edged infinity pool and sunpads hidden from view. It leaves the boat’s exterior aft deck free for guests to make the most of the ocean views with glass balustrades, turquoise soft furnishings and a drop-down swim platform at the stern. When it’s time to step the pool party vibe up a notch, a built-in light system brings it to life at night.

‘Christina O’

yacht swimming net

The 325-foot classic motor yacht Christina O , famously once owned by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, is often cited for its innovative design features, including a dining room that seats 42 people and a cocktail bar that entertained the likes of Marilyn Monroe and President John F. Kennedy. One of its most forward-thinking amenities is the swimming pool on the aft main deck that features a decorative mosaiced floor. Filled with saltwater and depicting a scene from Greek mythology, the floor can be raised and lowered at the push of a button, converting into an elaborate dancefloor for revelry that lingers long into the night.

‘Seasense’

yacht swimming net

Even the name of the 220-foot Benetti Seasense alludes to its owners love of all things water. Designed by Cor D. Rover, a 33-foot pool sits at the heart of the yacht. “It started with a pool that you can walk around and spend the day around rather than putting people in a lower-deck beach club,” Rover tells Robb Report . The breadth of the pool area is emphasized by teak decking that runs athwartships and is complemented by teak louvers that provide shade along the sides of the aft deck. Large sliding doors divide the pool, dining and lounge areas into two or, if preferred, three spaces. When emptied, the pool converts into a basketball court using 22 panels stored in lower deck lockers.

‘Luna’

yacht swimming net

It’s only right that one of the world’s largest expedition yachts should have one of the biggest pools ever found on a superyacht. The 66-foot-long pool on the 377-foot Luna brings wow factor to a supersized open aft deck. Surrounded by large sunpads and partly shaded by the deck above, the pool dominates the stern area of the yacht creating a dedicated lido at sea. Dining areas and additional shaded seating areas are complemented by steps that lead down to the water’s edge, giving guests the choice between pool laps and sea swims.

‘Tatiana’

yacht swimming net

Spanning a total area of 1,184 square feet and considered one of the best superyacht beach clubs in the world, the 263-ft. Tatiana ’s multi-level recreational offering features two pools—one above the other—and is directly connected to the main salon via a dramatic underlit staircase. That means you can swim in the enclosed 30-foot-long freshwater pool or in the glass-bottomed second pool on the main deck. When the yacht is at anchor, fold-out terraces on both sides give access to the ultimate saltwater pool—the ocean.

yacht swimming net

Project X ’s glass-encased, hexagon-shaped swimming pool is one of the more dramatic on the water, with a practical side. Clad in silver Xs—the symbol that features prominently across the 288-footer by Golden Yachts—its glass sides were conceived to allow the adults to keep an eye on the children when playing, as well as bringing additional light into the beach club below. The bottom of the pool sits suspended in the center of the open-plan space, yet is accessed from the main deck aft. The pool also features a waterfall that adds drama to what is already a cool-looking water feature.

The coolest superyacht pools in the world

Superyacht swimming pools are a luxury in more ways than one, proving a technological challenge that, when pulled off, elevate a superyacht to even higher standards of splendour. BOAT takes a closer look at the yachts that have risen to the occasion, with designs that feature cinema screens, chandeliers and basketball courts...

The 49.9-metre Grey retains the same classic Paszkowski profile as sisterships Kinda and Olokun , but with several all-important differences – including the addition of the swimming pool. Commissioned in 2021, this Tankoa Yachts build has been customised by her owner to feature a larger-than-usual, glass-sided swimming pool on the foredeck, complete with a high-definition, high-luminosity cinema screen. Flanked by sofa seating, the screen also includes integrated speakers and a surround-sound system courtesy of British-French brand Focal and Naim.

The 80-metre Tatiana is the sister of Bilgin's bright-red Leona and both yachts have the same striking, bullet-style exterior. At her epicentre is a 110-square-metre, two-level beach club, connected to the main saloon by a dramatic, sweeping staircase. While there’s a pool on both decks, the largest is found on the lower deck. Clocking in at an impressive 8.5 metres long and three metres wide, the pool is surrounded by delicate glass columns, Carrara marble and a backlit, blue agate floor. When the yacht is anchored, the aft door and two side terraces unfold, creating a seamless connection to the ocean. The water from both pools is also recyclable, able to be stored in a heating holding tank.

Lady Jorgia

Lady Jorgia (formerly known as Ahpo ) is a 115-metre, Caribbean-inspired family superyacht. While a lot of her defining features are plainly visible, some sights are reserved only for guests, such as the mosaic-lined, eight-metre long, glass-fronted pool. This pool features integrated LED lighting and privacy walls – not including the aft wall, which was left transparent for ocean views. Below deck and even more exclusive is Lady Jorgia 's complementary spa plunge pool, prettified with a teak-and-teal wave mosaic design, bamboo panes and a leaf-shaped skylight. Both are warmed by the engines and generators’ normal operation, in an efficient heat-recovery system.

The 67-metre Seasense 's exceptionally large pool is actually what got the yacht sold – Cor D. Rover's pool-centric drawing stood out to future owner (and previous owner of three Rivas ) Charles Cohen. At ten metres long, 3.6 metres wide and able to support a staggering 27,000 litres of water, Cohen wanted sunlight to reach every millimetre of his magnum opus . That's why Seasense 's aft deck is so elongated, with the swimming pool actually being part of the hull rather than inserted afterwards (a more typical construction). To give you a better idea of its size, the crew can transform the emptied pool into a basketball court using 22 panels stored in lower deck lockers. A basketball hoop affixes to the deck overhang at the forward end of the pool.

The radical pool designed for 32.6-metre Lady Fleur doubles as storage for an 11-metre RIB tender, with the hydraulic submersible platform transforming into a five-metre-by-two-metre saltwater pool in seconds. Four bespoke rotor arms move the pool in a gentle swaying motion to avoid spilling water when underway, which builder X-Treme Yachts explained is part of a "totally custom-made system" that is "unique in the world". Designed for the owner's grandchildren, the pool contains nearly 19 tonnes of seawater when full and has an adjustable depth, from 0.3 to 1.5 metres.

Inspired by her owner's favourite shade "Monaco Red", the 64-metre Atomic definitely stands out from sisterships Sealion and Roma . This yacht's beating (red) heart is her brilliantly iridescent spa pool, found on the sundeck aft. With a tiered structure and glass bottom, sunlight refracts on the water's surface and sends colourful, coral waves to the dining area directly below. Adjacent to the pool is a split-level lounge space with a gas firepit and a U-shaped bar, surrounded by high-backed custom seating.

A World Superyacht Award winner in the Displacement Motor Yachts category, one of Somnium 's stand-outs is her chic, built-in, 9,000 litre pool. Overlooking the yacht's transom, ample ocean views encourage relaxation, while a counter-current jet provides a light work-out for the more active members on board. The pool floor can be raised flush with the deck and modular furniture placed on top to provide supplementary lounge space. During construction, Feadship had to find space below the pool and its machinery for a beach club and gym, as per the owner's request. The pool tank and its mosaic walls are thus visible from the beach club through a large picture window.

Christina O

The 99.1-metre Christina O 's recent role in Netflix drama The Crown isn't her first brush with the celebrity lifestyle. Delivered in 1943, she was rebuilt by the famous Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping magnate and one of the world's richest men at the time. Under his ownership, Christina O entertained cultural icons Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill and JFK – and has an equally iconic pool to match her history. Found on the aft main deck, this saltwater fantail number is emblazoned with a Greek mythological minotaur mosaic. It is also capable of rising to form a dance floor at the push of a button.

Built for the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the 126.2-metre Lürssen superyacht Octopus is indulgently decked-out with every conceivable amenity. Alongside her two helicopters and submarine, the heated, seven-metre freshwater swimming pool is considered Octopus ' greatest asset. The pool has a glass bottom that rises to create an on-water dance floor. In the immediate area, you'll find a bar, pizza oven and former music studio, whose isolation booth makes the perfect place for a DJ.

This Benetti build boasts an expansive wellness area, the jewel of which is a 30-square-metre, counter-flow swimming pool, kitted out with underwater speakers and an adjustable bottom. Luminosity's pool is clad in mirror-polished stainless steel, reflecting its surroundings and blurring the boundary between pool and seascape. The space above is punctuated with a custom chandelier inspired by a diamond. "When you look at the water and the sun is shining, it looks like millions of diamonds," said designer Zaniz. An accompanying four-degree plunge pool is decorated with on-theme visual cues, such as mirror-backed acrylic "ice-cubes" and an acrylic ice cube accessory, seen above.

M'brace

The swimming pool on 74.5-metre M'brace (ex. Elandess ) has a futuristic look befitting her technological design. Eight metres by 2.5 metres and able to hold 22 tonnes of fresh water, hidden beams below the pool distribute its substantial weight to the outer edges of the superstructure and down to the hull. Thanks to two 280-millimetre diameter pipes, the pool can also be emptied in only three minutes. The sundeck swimming pool skylight allows natural light to filter to a circular staircase below deck, glinting off mother-of-flecks in a plaster surrounded by DKT Artworks.

Designed with economy and efficiency in mind, the 75-metre Kenshō has an aft deck that does it all: social seating, dining, a party space and (of course) a pool area, located on the lower deck for "mesmerising views at the same level as the ocean”. A complementary spa pool features a cut-away glass side and a large sunbed, with a shape styled after a manta ray. Inspired by the natural forces of Arizona's Antelope Canyon, the aft walls and the stairs on the pool deck look as if they were carved by the sea.

Built by Oceanco , this 90-metre, shark-inspired superyacht features two spectacular swimming pools. Pictured above is DAR's 1.6-metre-deep bridge deck pool, surrounded by bright-white sun pads and fed by a cascade of waterfalls that begin on the upper deck. It has been raised to make it safer for small children. Hidden on the owner's deck, however, is a completely private spa pool, flanked by one-way windows that reveal the world to the owners, but not the owners to the world.

  • August 29, 2023

yacht swimming net

A swimming pool aboard a luxury yacht is one of the most in-demand amenities, often acting as the social hub on sun-drenched yacht experiences in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Many of the world’s most luxurious superyachts for charter and sale boast lavish pools with a raft of features, from counter-current jets to glass bottoms, waterfalls, and underwater lights. Some of the most sophisticated pools on yachts even boast depth-adjustable floors, which can be transformed into a dance floor at the flick of a switch.

Read on to discover the best yachts with swimming pools and discover a true taste of the ultimate superyacht lifestyle!

What are the best yachts with pools?

Some of the best yachts with pools include M/Ys MADSUMMER, KISMET, and LADY JORGIA (formerly AHPO).

M/Y MADSUMMER

Motor yacht MADSUMMER is an exquisite charter yacht with a striking pool on her main deck, offering a central destination for convivial get-togethers with friends and family members. The yacht’s pool is surrounded by generously sized sun pads and high glass bulwarks that offer protection from the elements without interrupting sea views. At 12 meters (3.3ft), the pool is big enough for swimming laps or simply soaking in the sun.

The award-winning 95-meter (311ft) MADSUMMER, is a pedigree superyacht built by Lurssen in 2019. Her swimming pool is just one of many delightful features that make MADSUMMER one of the most sought-after superyachts for charter. She boasts a world-class gym and spa, extensive diving facilities, 10 spacious guest rooms, and an elegant contemporary modern interior by Laura Sessa, offering refined spaces for relaxation, dining, and entertaining.

The 95-meter (312.4ft) Lurssen-built KISMET is a refined yacht with pool that offers limitless levels of luxury. Her striking oval mosaic swimming pool with Jacuzzi is her highlight, located on her foredeck, which commands spectacular sea views. The pool depth is staggered, with a shallow rim around the outer edge, offering a great place to immerse yourself in the water while enjoying the sunshine, cocktail in hand. Capping off the pool area is oversized seating, making the pool area a superb social destination.

yacht swimming net

Beyond the pool, the award-winning KISMET – considered one of the world’s finest superyachts; features include a superb gym and spa, a voluminous master deck with Jacuzzi, and a one-of-a-kind retractable outdoor fireplace. This luxury yacht is listed for sale exclusively with Moran Yacht & Ship.

M/Y JORGIA (Formerly AHPO)

Since her launch in 2021, the record-breaking M/Y JORGIA has been the talk of the superyacht industry. This Lurssen custom yacht is one of the world’s largest superyachts at 115 meters (377.2ft), the world’s most expensive charter yacht – priced at 2.6 million Euros per week – and was recently sold by yacht brokerage Moran Yacht & Ship in what is believed to be the largest yacht brokerage deal in history.

As you would expect, her swimming pool, located on the aft deck, is nothing short of impressive. The glass-fronted, eight-meter pool boasts integrated LED lights and privacy walls, except for the aft wall, which is transparent to enable swimmers to enjoy views of the sea. Immediately adjacent to the yacht’s swimming pool is the hot tub. A heat recovery system redirects heat from the ship’s engines and generators keeping the pool at the ideal temperature. So even on a cruise in Antarctica, you can still enjoy this outstanding feature.

If the yacht’s pool doesn’t take your fancy, M/Y JORGIA boasts a wealth of features to keep you entertained, including a spectacular beach club, a full-service spa and beauty salon, a fully equipped gym, a cinema room, a fully commercial helipad, and a garage loaded with the latest tenders and water toys.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht swimming net

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht swimming net

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht swimming net

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht swimming net

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Crystal Cascades death prompts suggestion of lifeguards to improve inland swimming spot safety

A bunch of flowers behind a fence and beside a NO ENTRY sign in a rainforest setting.

The crystal-clear waterfalls and creeks of Far North Queensland draw in masses of tourists and locals captivated by their natural beauty.

But the lurking dangers below surface have led to tragedy, with more than 60 deaths recorded over the past two decades in the region's lakes, rivers, dams and creeks.

Royal Life Saving Australia says the rising number of fatalities should prompt a serious rethink on safety strategies for inland waterways — and lifeguards and rescue equipment should be considered.

Sixty deaths in two decades

A 20-year-old Japanese tourist died a week ago at the famous Crystal Cascades , west of Cairns, in what police are investigating as a possible case of misadventure.

The man's death happened less than a kilometre upstream from where a father and son drowned in April 2023 , making it the fifth fatality at the Cascades in 10 years.

Royal Life Saving Australia's national fatal drowning database shows 61 people died at an inland waterway in Far North Queensland in the 20 years to June 30, 2023.

The figure represents 41 per cent of the 149 drowning deaths in the region over the same period, with other key locations including beaches and swimming pools.

Three-quarters of the inland drowning victims were male and the majority were under 35 years old.

Most deaths happened within a 100km radius, with danger spots also including Babinda Boulders, Josephine Falls, Lake Eacham, and the Barron, Mulgrave, and Tully rivers.

Lifeguards help reduce risk

Royal Life Saving drowning prevention strategy manager Will Koon said lifeguards were a core factor in drowning prevention and should be considered for popular inland waterways at busy times, such as weekends and school holidays.

"Lifeguards and lifesavers, all around the coast, help reduce risk by helping people understand where they should and shouldn't swim by putting flags up," Mr Koon said.

"If something does go wrong, they're there.

"We do know that lifeguards are effective in preventing drowning — it shouldn't be excluded as a potential option."

Mr Koon also suggested providing rescue equipment, like life rings, at popular waterways.

But he said responsible promotion of waterways on social media and for tourism purposes also needed to be considered as part of any review of waterways.

"I think that there's a collective responsibility here," he said.

Counting the cost

At the time of last week's fatality, the water flow through Crystal Cascades was higher than usual due to recent heavy rain.

Mr Koon said it was important the public were informed when environmental conditions changed.

"Just because it's available, doesn't mean that people are always going to go and seek that information out," he said.

Cairns Mayor Terry James promised a comprehensive investigation into the latest drowning deaths, but said safety and signage had already been improved at places like Babinda Boulders.

The council employs lifeguards at the Esplanade Lagoon and on some beaches, but not at inland waterways.

Cr James said his council was guided by expert advice and standards, which had not recommended lifeguards further inland.

"If those standards need to be increased … we'll do that — but obviously it comes with a cost [to ratepayers]," he said.

Cr James warned installing devices like lifebuoys and ropes was impractical.

"Where do you put them? There's thousands of swimming places around Cairns," he said.

"Kids will knock them off and damage them."

'They're going to do this … no matter what'

Royal Life Saving capability and industry manager RJ Houston is often called as an expert witness at coronial inquests.

He said the economic cost of a drowning was as big as the emotional toll.

"Whether it's putting up signs, rescue equipment, patrolling services; we've also got to consider that there's a really significant cost in not doing those things," Mr Houston said.

"We've really got to fully value the benefits of safe activity in these locations as well as the full costs of not creating safer environments.

"In many cases, inland waterways don't have the same mobile phone reception, emergency help phones and certainly don't have the rescue equipment or lifeguards that you might expect to see at a public pool or on our designated swimming area at a beach."

University of NSW water safety expert Amy Peden said signage and barriers were necessary, but rarely worked.

"It's a very different psychology for tourists — they have travelled this far, they're going to do this experience no matter what," Dr Peden said.

"If conditions aren't great, it's unlikely they can come back and try again. [So] they're going to want to do that experience at that time, at that place."
