Delivered in 2018 by Rossinavi, UTOPIA IV is the harmonious balance of a luxurious superyacht and a high-performance sport yacht. UTOPIA IV is available for charter in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and New England.

Fitted with four MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines that provide power to four Rolls Royce hydro jets, UTOPIA IV effortlessly glides through the water with a cruising speed of 24 knots while achieving impressive top speeds. Considering her size, this performance is quite remarkable.

With an exterior featuring coupe-like design cues of long handsome lines coupled with a slender silhouette, her interior is sleek and wide and can sleep 12 guests across six spacious suites. The tastefully appointed interior blends minimalism with sophisticated European taste sourced from haute couture brands Hermes and Armani.

The forward-facing owner’s suite has a commanding view provided by floor-to-ceiling windows and features a grand bathroom with a double shower and jacuzzi. The master suite also contains a sitting room, office, and private balcony.

A notable feature of UTOPIA IV is her impressive stern beach club. The transom folds down to add 754 square feet of swim platform to the bar and relaxation area inside the vessel. Light filters down above the bar from the ceiling through the glass-bottom pool on the main deck above.

Superyacht “Attessa IV” For Sale

Merle Wood & Associates has listed the 332-foot Attessa IV for sale at an asking price of more than $164 million. It’s a yacht with a storied history as one of the most significant rebuilds ever undertaken in the global yachting community.

Until 2007, this same yacht was known as the 298-foot Evergreen , built by a commercial shipyard in Japan. American billionaire Dennis Washington—whom Forbes described as having had an early love of machinery, and who turned a $30,000 loan into companies focused on shipbuilding, railroads, demolition, mining and more—took notice when the owner wanted to sell.

But the idea wasn’t to use the yacht in anything remotely resembling its original form. Washington wanted a total rebuild from the tender garage to the foredeck, gutting everything from the main deck up, and totally reconfiguring the vessel for use as a private yacht more in keeping with what’s expected in regions such as the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

The rebuild, undertaken in Vancouver, Canada, was completed in 2010. Accommodations on Attessa IV are now for as many as 18 guests in nine staterooms. The master includes his and hers dressing rooms, a private office, a private salon, private outdoor dining and a private deck for arriving and departing by helicopter. That helipad is in addition to a second, touch-and-go helipad that is located on the yacht’s bow.

Onboard amenities include a spa with a beauty salon, massage, a steam room and a gym. The beach club abaft the gym has a hot tub and seating area, while up top on the sundeck, there’s a pool with a shallow section for children. The main deck includes a cinema, and there’s an elevator for guests to access the lower deck through the sky lounge.

The yacht also has quarters for 28 crew. And, just in case extra security is a concern, Attessa IV is built to be bulletproof. The yacht has a Kevlar-lined steel hull and superstructure, along with windows built of bulletproof glass.

Attessa IV is built to be a world cruiser, with a reported range of more than 7,000 nautical miles. Top speed is listed as 25 knots, and draft is a hair over 15 feet. The diesel power plants are by Wartsila.

Sheriff identifies young siblings killed by driver who crashed into party

Officials in southeastern Michigan have identified the 8-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother who were killed Saturday when a suspected drunk driver plowed through a child’s birthday party at a creekside boat club.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough in a statement Monday identified the children as Alanah Phillips, age 8, and Zayn Phillips, age 4. Diane Harrington, the victims’ aunt, said in a verified fundraiser for family funeral costs that the children’s mother and older brother remained hospitalized. Harrington declined to comment when reached by phone Sunday.

Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey A. Yorkey is expected to announced a final charging decision Tuesday against the 66-year-old driver. The woman, who has not been identified but was cooperating with police, was arrested at the scene Saturday after she slammed her SUV into the side of the Swan Boat Club about 3 p.m. and continued about 25 feet into the building before coming to a stop. The woman was taken into custody for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and causing death.

Among the nine people hospitalized, an 11-year-old boy and a 31-year-old woman remained in critical condition Monday, three teenagers were listed in serious condition, and five other people were treated for minor injuries, Goodnough’s office said.

“The scene was described by the first responders as ‘extremely chaotic,’ with [a] high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed the horrific incident,” Goodnough said during a Saturday news conference.

Gasps rippled through the room when Goodnough, in a trembling voice, said the two young party attendees pronounced dead at the scene were siblings.

Six adults and three children were rushed to the hospital by ambulance and helicopter with serious injuries after the crash at the boat club in Berlin Township, roughly 30 miles south of Detroit.

Video of the crash captured by doorbell camera shows a black SUV speeding through the boat club’s parking lot before crashing out of the frame and sending plumes of smoke and dust into the air.

Authorities said they were investigating a local tavern several miles away, where the suspect was believed to have been served before the fatal crash.

“We went in, we shut the business down, and we executed a search warrant into the business conducted that day,” Goodnough said.

The Swan Boat Club said in a Facebook post that it would remain closed Sunday and asked the community for prayers and support for the victims’ families.

Monroe — Distraught relatives of two young siblings killed by an alleged drunken driver at a birthday party at a boat club lashed out at the suspect Tuesday in a Monroe County courtroom, accusing her of taking "those babies from us," while the woman's attorney suggested she suffered from a seizure that contributed to Saturday's crash.

Marshella Chidester, 66, showed little emotion as the aunt of the two children who were killed, Lana Phillips, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4, addressed the court before Chidester's bond was set.

“She chose to drink and those were my grandbabies. She made the choice to get in that car, and she chose to drink and drive, and she took those babies from us,” grandmother Kathy Phillips said.

Chidester, a former commodore of the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township where the crash took place, was formally charged in Monroe's 1st District Court with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She faces up to life in prison if she is convicted.

At her arraignment, Chidester limped into the courtroom with her right arm in a splint.

In an unusual move during the arraignment, District Judge Christian Horkey allowed relatives of the crash victims to address the court in person and via Zoom before setting bail at $1.5 million for Chidester. Some blared out comments via Zoom.

Bill Colovos, Chidester's attorney, said his client believes she had a seizure at the wheel Saturday and said she does not remember entering the parking lot of the boat club or anything that happened leading up to the crash. He said she was invited to the birthday party by the person hosting it.

"She was meeting her husband at the birthday party at the boat club … and all of a sudden, she said 'I blacked out, I remember nothing,'" Colovos said Tuesday evening.

Colovos said Chidester has a history of epileptic-type seizures in her legs that result in paralysis, including one last fall in which she blacked out. Chidester has since been treated for seizures, Colovos said, and has not had any since she was put on medication last year until Saturday.

Colovos said Chidester was barred by her doctor from driving for six months. The attorney said in court Tuesday that she was put on medication in November, which would have made her ineligible to drive until next month. Colovos told The Detroit News in a follow-up conversation that treatments began Oct. 1, when the original blackout episode occurred.

Colovos didn't specify a name for her condition in court but told The News Tuesday evening that Chidester was treated for neuropathy — a condition in which the peripheral nerves to the feet are damaged, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. After the diagnosis, Chidester's doctor put her on medication and didn't allow her to drive until the end of March, Colovos said.

The biggest cause of neuropathy is diabetes, according to the APMA. Other causes include alcoholism, arthritis, heredity and advanced age, according to the medical group's website.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffrey Yorkey said there was no evidence Chidester had a seizure the day of the crash.

A “very long investigation,” including a breath test, indicated she was significantly over the legal limit of 0.08. He did not say what Chidester's blood alcohol content was but said she admitted to drinking. 

Yorkey requested that Horkey, the judge, set Chidester’s bond at $1.5 million, noting that friends and family told investigators she has a “very severe substance abuse issue.”

Colovos said they do not have the results back from the blood alcohol test yet, and the preliminary breath test Chidester took on the scene is not admissible in court because it's often inaccurate.

Colovos also said earlier Tuesday that Chidester had no record and was retired, living a “peaceful life.”

“In 60 years on this earth, she’s never had any traffic involvement. She’s never had any law enforcement involvement,” Colovos said. “It’s horrible what happened, absolutely horrible … but some things we don’t have control over.”

Someone on the Zoom feed interjected as the attorney was speaking in court and said, “She shouldn’t have been drinking.”

Raquel Smouthers, Lana and Zayn's aunt, also said Tuesday that even if Chidester was on medication or had medical issues, she should not have been driving.

“Nobody should ever have to go to a birthday party thinking they’re going to die,” Smouthers said.

She added that the two deceased children couldn't have an open-casket funeral because of the injuries they suffered.

"I cannot close my eyes at night without seeing them babies and what they look like," Smouthers said between sobs.

Lana and Zayn's older brother and mother were in critical condition after the crash, according to a GoFundMe set up by the children's aunt, Diane Harrington. Their mother, Mariah Dodds, filed a lawsuit Monday against Chidester and the bar police said she was drinking at before the crash.

Chidester crashed into the Swan Boat Club in the 6000 block of Brancheau in Berlin Township at about 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Her vehicle landed 25 feet into the building, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

“The scene was described by first responders as extremely chaotic, with high levels of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” Goodnough said at a Saturday night press conference.

The party was being held for a 3-year-old at the club, said Detroit attorney Jon Markos, who is representing Dodds.

The boat club was closed Sunday, according to its website and Facebook page, and is usually closed Monday and Tuesday.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to this family and everyone else that was involved," said the boat club's post. "That family has asked us to post their go fund me to help with the funeral arrangements for the two children."

A Dutch auction house is gearing up to sell a yacht belonging to a pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarch, the first time a seized asset is being sold and the funds sent to Ukraine, according to Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency .

The agency, a governmental body responsible for finding, tracing, and dealing with assets derived from corruption and other crimes, said Troostwijk Auctions would manage the sale of the 92-meter-long yacht.

The MY Royal Romance was owned by Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian lawmaker who had his Ukrainian citizenship revoked for his pro-Russian activities.

The US sanctioned Medvedchuk in March 2014 for his alleged role in the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, and Ukrainian counterintelligence officers arrested him in April 2022 after he was charged with treason.

He was swapped for 200 Ukrainian prisoners of war in September 2022 after requesting such an exchange shortly after his arrest, according to the Security Service of Ukraine .

Selling yachts owned by those sanctioned by Ukrainian and Western governments has proved to be a headache .

Many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized — and technically don't belong to overseas governments, meaning they can't be sold without special permission.

As BI previously reported , Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

But over two years later, it's still unclear whether they can be sold or, indeed, who'd buy them.

Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency described attempts to sell the Royal Romance as 10 months of "tireless" work.

It also described the move as a "turning point" that could pave the way for more similar efforts in Ukraine and abroad.

The "sale of Medvedchuk's yacht is not only symbolic, as it can be the first impetus and demonstration to the entire community that the assets of traitors to Ukraine will be used for the benefit of Ukraine," it said.

The agency did not specify where or when the auction would take place. It also failed to mention the expected price tag.

Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency and Troostwijk Auctions did not immediately respond to BI's request for comments.

At Least 2 Are Stabbed on a Party Boat in Brooklyn

Three people were hospitalized, including a man who was struck in the head with a bottle, and more than 1,000 passengers were evacuated, the authorities said.

Two men were stabbed and another was hit in the head with a bottle on a crowded party boat in Brooklyn on Saturday evening, the authorities said.

The men were hospitalized with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police and fire officials said.

The police said the attacks forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 passengers from the boat, a cruise ship called the Cornucopia Majesty , which was docked at Pier 4 at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the torso, a 40-year-old man was stabbed several times in the chest and abdomen, and a 28-year-old man was hit in the head with a bottle, the police said. All three men were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.

The stabbings happened just after 5 p.m., the police said. No arrests had been made as of Saturday night, and it was unclear how many attackers had been involved.

The police said they believed that a dispute had escalated into a physical altercation, but that the events leading up to the stabbings were still under investigation.

Just before 8 p.m., the group that organized the party, BYFAR Entertainment, posted a statement to social media .

“Unfortunately, a crime scene developed by the pier, which has caused the postponement of the night event,” the company said. “We will have updates on a later date so just hold on tight with us while we sort everything out. BYFAR Entertainment has always been a beacon of safe events in New York City and this rare occurrence has never been the norm with us.”

In the hours before the fight, the Cornucopia Majesty had hosted a party .

Passengers said in interviews that they had enjoyed dancing, eating and drinking rum aboard the ship, but by early evening, they were standing confused on the pier, surrounded by police cruisers and ambulances.

Glendon Thomas, 29, a resident of New Jersey, said he and several friends realized a fight had broken out on the ship only after they disembarked.

“I saw a guy laying on his friend,” he said, adding that the friend appeared to have a wound on his chest.

Kevaun Whitely, who lives in Brooklyn, said the fight had broken out as a large crowd of rowdy partygoers — many of whom had been drinking alcohol — attempted to disembark through the same door.

“It was like a stampede,” Mr. Whitely, 27, said.

The police kept Mr. Whitely and several other people on board the ship for hours as they checked identification, he said.

“I’m glad we got out safe,” he said, adding, “I hope nobody passed away from all this craziness.”

At least 28 others are missing after a boat carrying 77 asylum seekers sinks, according to the UN’s migration agency.

At least 16 people are dead and 28 others are missing after a boat carrying asylum seekers capsized off the coast of the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti, according to the UN’s migration agency.

The accident occurred on Monday night, about two weeks after another boat carrying mainly Ethiopian asylum seekers sank off the Djibouti coast, killing several dozen people, on the perilous so-called “eastern migration route” from Africa to the Middle East.

“Tragedy as boat capsizes off Djibouti coast with 77 migrants on board including children,” the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday in a post on X.

“At least 28 missing. 16 dead,” it said, adding that the local IOM branch was “supporting local authorities with search and rescue effort”.

Yvonne Ndege, a spokeswoman for the agency, told the AFP news agency that the 16 deaths included children and an infant, without offering further details.

Ethiopia’s ambassador to Djibouti, Berhanu Tsegaye, said on X that the boat was carrying Ethiopians from Yemen and that the accident occurred off Godoria in northeastern Djibouti.

He said 33 people, including one woman, survived.

Another boat carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Godoria on April 8, according to the IOM and the Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti.

The IOM said at the time that the bodies of 38 people, including children, were recovered, while another six people were missing.

The Ethiopian embassy had said the boat was carrying Ethiopians from Djibouti to war-torn Yemen.

‘Eastern Route’

Each year, many tens of thousands of African asylum seekers brave the “eastern route” across the Red Sea and through Yemen to try to reach Saudi Arabia, escaping conflict or natural disaster, or seeking better economic opportunities.

“On their journeys, many face life-threatening dangers including starvation, health risks and exploitation – at the hands of human traffickers and other criminals,” the IOM said in a statement in February.

Ndege said the IOM’s data from 2023 showed that “the number of people trying to cross is on the rise”.

According to the IOM, Ethiopians make up 79 percent of about 100,000 people who arrived in Yemen last year from Djibouti or Somalia, the remainder being Somalis.

Africa’s second-most populous country, Ethiopia is blighted by various conflicts and several regions have suffered from severe drought in recent years.

More than 15 percent of its 120 million inhabitants depend on food aid.

In February, the IOM said that according to its Missing Migrants Project at least 698 people, including women and children, had died crossing the Gulf of Aden from Djibouti to Yemen last year.

BELEM, Brazil (AP) — The bodies of nine migrants found on an African boat off the northern coast of Brazil’s Amazon region were buried Thursday with a solemn ceremony in the Para state capital of Belem.

Fishermen off the coast of Para found the boat adrift April 13, carrying the bodies that were already decomposing. Brazilian officials later said documents found in the vessel indicated that the victims were migrants from Mali and Mauritania and that the boat had departed the latter country after Jan. 17.

Brazil’s federal police said later that the bodies were of adults or teenagers whose exact age could not be determined. Agents found two documents — an identity card from Mauritania and a register of entry in Mauritania that belonged to someone from Mali.

The deceased were buried in a secular ceremony organized by a number of groups involved in their recovery, such as the U.N. Refugee Agency, the Red Cross and the International Organization for Migration , as well as Brazilian police, navy and civil defense agencies.

A tropical rain fell as their coffins were lowered into graves dug into the earth and those present watched in respectful silence.

Their roughly 12-meter (39-foot) boat was carrying 25 raincoats and 27 mobile phones, suggesting the original number of passengers was significantly higher. This also implies that people of other nationalities may have been among the deceased, local officials have said.

Brazil’s federal police said it is unlikely they will extract any information from the phones due to the long time of oxydation they were subjected to. The force also added they had found paper notes in the boat with phone numbers from Mauritania, Mali and Congo. A kind of stove and two containers that could have carried water or fuel were also among the remains.

It was a rustic blue-and-white fiberglass boat that, when found, had neither motor, tiller nor rudder. Its canoe shape is similar to Mauritanian fishing boats often used by migrants fleeing West Africa and aiming to enter the European Union via Spain’s Canary Islands.

An Associated Press investigation published last year revealed that in 2021 at least seven boats from northwest Africa were found in the Caribbean and Brazil. All carried dead bodies, like the vessel found in Para.

So far, none of the victims have been identified. Authorities said the manner of their burial would allow for subsequent exhumations in case families of the deceased were located and wished to transfer the bodies back to their home countries.

Brazil’s criminology institute in the capital Brasilia is carrying out forensic examinations of the remains, and the Federal Police say they are in contact with Interpol and foreign organizations to provide eventual results.

This year the number of people attempting the crossing from the northwest coast of Africa to the EU has seen a 500% spike, with the majority departing from Mauritania, according to Spain’s interior ministry. But it is a dangerous route with strong Atlantic winds, and boats that go off course can stay adrift for months and be swept away to distant destinations, often leading migrants to die of dehydration and malnutrition.

The reasons pushing people toward such boats are varied and intertwined: a lack of jobs and prospects of a better life, impacts of climate change, growing insecurity and political instability, among others.

More than 14,000 African migrants have reached the Canary Islands so far this year, according to the Spanish ministry. In February, the EU and Mauritania signed a 210 million euro ($225 million) deal aimed at cracking down on people smuggling and deterring migrant boats.

With hundreds more West African migrants reported missing, families in Mauritania have set up a commission to search for loved ones, and are anxiously awaiting information from Brazil.

Bachirou Saw of Mauritania buried one of his nephews earlier this year who had died during the arduous Atlantic crossing shortly after reaching the Spanish island of El Hierro. He’s still looking for another nephew, Kadija Saw, who departed in January and is nowhere to be found. He’s following news from Brazil closely.

Saw, who also has Spanish citizenship and immigrated to Europe by plane 30 years ago when it was easier to get a visa, said he’s been trying to convince young men not to emigrate by boat. He created a WhatsApp group to alert migrants to the perils of the ocean voyage and to share information with desperate relatives, and has counted at least 1,500 missing in the last six months from Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. While most of the migrants embarking to Europe are men, there is an increasing number of women getting aboard boats, too.

“I have their ID’s on my phone,” said Saw, who receives messages every day from families looking for their loved ones. Together with others, they’ve organized trips to Morocco to look inside prisons and morgues. Moroccan authorities often intercept migrants trying to reach Spain and detain them before deporting them. But Saw’s nephew wasn’t there either. He also visited the Canary Islands to check the morgues there.

Saw’s sister is desolate. “Every day she buys credit to listen to our audios, she lives for this, she doesn’t eat, she is thin, just thinking about her son,” Saw said. And she’s not alone.

“It’s very sad, half of the villages are dancing because their sons have arrived (in Spain),” he said, “but the other half cries because they’ve lost their sons in the ocean.”
