5 reasons to experience the U.S. Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier

Published on June 12, 2023 by Choose Chicago

The Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier brings action-packed racing to Lake Michigan, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium , on June 16 – 17, 2023 to kick off the summer of racing.

National teams from the United States and all around the world will race hydro-foiling 50-foot race boats that literally fly over the water while sailing at 60+ mph speeds, thrilling crowds on land and on water, all in the heart of the Windy City.

Chicago is the only freshwater venue in the world, and is the first event to open SailGP’s season four! Here are five reasons to come experience the adrenaline-fueled racing at Navy Pier:

1. Race boats that literally fly out of the water. Really! The F50 catamaran uses hydrofoils to lift out of the water and achieve highway speeds, faster than almost any power boat! This means close racing, crashes, capsizes, and drama — definitely not your normal day on the water.

Boats on the water during SailGP

2. Come for the party, stay for the racing! Tickets start at just $35 for general admission on Friday or Saturday. The Race Stadium opens at 3 p.m. and racing begins at 4 p.m. each day.

New to the festivities this year: the White Claw™ Beach Club. With panoramic views of the racecourse, the Beach Club is located right at the water’s edge and is the best place to witness the fast and furious racing action of SailGP.

3. Feel the spray of the F50s flying by Navy Pier. SailGP brings fans closer into the action than any other sporting event with opportunities to meet world-class athletes on shore and catch a glimpse of the race boats up close!

4. Bring your own boat! Yes, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium really will feel like a race course and you have the opportunity to bring a boat (or ask a friend) and anchor right next to the race course for an unparalleled, up-close race experience!

5. Don’t have your own boat — no problem! Another new option is the On-Water Premium Presented By White Claw™ Spirits. Treat yourself to an exclusive race experience onboard the SailGP spectator boat fleet with unique viewing opportunities located immediately next to the race course.

Enjoy live music and DJs, premium food and beverage experiences, fan shops, big screen TVs, fireworks, and more!

Racing takes place between Navy Pier and Adler Planetarium, guaranteeing a front-row seat along the waterfront as well.

T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago kicks off Saturday at Navy Pier

By Meredith Barack

Updated on: June 17, 2022 / 1:15 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS)--  Check out the  T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago  this weekend at Navy Pier.

From June 18 to 19, 10 national teams will race identical F-50 catamarans on Lake Michigan in the hydro-foiling race.

Athletes from the United States, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Spain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Switzerland will compete in Chicago.

This marks the first time the championship has ever competed on fresh water.

It's not sailing most are used to, it's high-speed racing. The carbon fiber  boats go up to 60 miles per hour during the race and "fly above the water."

CBS 2's Meredith Barack spoke with Anna Weis, a U.S. athlete competing this weekend.

"This is definitely some full-on sailing and not your leisurely everyday, go out and have fun, it is extremely fun, but there's a lot on and there's a lot of technicalities and teamwork that is required to make the boat go fast," Weis said.

Weis raced in the Tokyo Olympics and has worked with the Chicago Yacht Club to help train coaches.

Levitating sailboat race returns to Chicago in June: ‘Not your grandfather’s sailing’

A high-speed race is coming to Chicago’s downtown lakefront in the next few weeks, but it’s not NASCAR’s Street Race .

This one is happening on Lake Michigan.

SailGP, short for Sail Grand Prix, kicks off its second year in the water by Navy Pier on Father’s Day weekend, racing 50-foot catamarans that appear to float above water.

They’re not levitating — just balancing on a below-boat foil, like an airplane wing, that reduces drag and allows them to reach 60 mph.

“This is not your grandfather’s sailing,” said Tod Reynolds, event director for SailGP in Chicago.

Nine boats, each representing a different country, will zoom across the lake from the pier to the Adler Planetarium in SailGP’s fourth season opener June 16 and 17. The race is officially called the Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix.

Julie Giese, president of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, and Cooper Dressler of SailGP’s USA Team, exchange helmets at a news conference at Navy Pier. NASCAR is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

SailGP publicized the race at a press event with NASCAR officials Wednesday at Navy Pier, challenging racers from each franchise to try each other’s sport.

Julie Giese, president of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, exchanged racing helmets with SailGP USA team member Cooper Dressler.

Giese called the NASCAR race, set for July 1-2 around Grant Park, NASCAR’s “boldest initiative” in its 75-year history.

  • NASCAR to close southbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive 6 days, other major streets
  • NASCAR to use mufflers in Chicago, keep lakefront accessible

Dressler said the high speeds of the SailGP-style boats can be dangerous for crew members, but that there are extensive safety training and measures to account for that: safety knives, tethers and oxygen bottles in case crew members get stuck under wreckage.

The Chicago race is unique to sailboaters because it’s the only freshwater course in SailGP’s international circuit. The boats can go quicker in fresh water because there’s less drag than in salt water. But freshwater is also less buoyant, so the boats must reach higher speeds to rise up on their foils.

SailGP’s season 4 calendar

SailGP’s season 4 calendar

Chicago’s weather is less predictable than in ocean-side races. Last year, racers had to move farther out onto the lake because the lake breeze wasn’t reaching the shores.

“Chicago is very unpredictable — which makes it actually really interesting,” Dressler said.

  • Summertime festivals and special events offer fun for all ages

Reynolds said the race weekend was moved a day earlier on the weekend, over Friday and Saturday, so it wouldn’t interfere with Father’s Day, as it had during the Chicago race last year.

The race was also pushed later into the afternoon, starting at 4 p.m., when winds are expected to be stronger along the shore, he said.

DOWNTOWN — Chicago will host two races Downtown this summer: one on land and one on Lake Michigan.

The Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix returns for a second year June 16-17 at Navy Pier, officials announced Wednesday. The grand prix features national teams competing in fast, short races on high-speed catamarans.

navy pier sailboat race

The catamarans travel more than 60 mph as they cut through a course on Lake Michigan, which is the only freshwater venue for the grand prix.

Teams from New Zealand, Spain and Australia are among those competing.

In the spirit of friendly competition, officials from SailGP have invited officials from NASCAR for a crossover challenge between the two leagues to take place during the grand prix.

NASCAR officials will join the U.S. sailing team on their catamaran to race alongside DuSable Lake Shore Drive at highway speeds.

Although the catamarans don’t make revving noises like NASCAR cars , they’re still loud when racing through water, said U.S. SailGP athlete Cooper Dressler.

“It’s so loud that when we wear our helmets on board, we have integrated comms systems and microphones because that’s the only way we can hear each other,” Dressler said.

Dressler participated in a ceremonial helmet swap with NASCAR race officials Wednesday at a SailGP event. NASCAR is slated to take over Grant Park July 1-2.

Kara Bachman, executive director of the Chicago Sports Commission, called this summer the “summer of racing,” saying the events could potentially bring “thousands” of visitors to Chicago.

“What other sports can truly take place with the most beautiful skyline in the entire world?” Bachman said.

The east end of Navy Pier will be transformed into the SailGP Race Village featuring “stadium viewing with live commentary, big screens, and race-day entertainment,” according to a news release.

Sail GP tickets are $35 for general admission and $75 for waterfront grandstand seating.

The Chicago Water Taxi’s bright yellow boats will return to the city’s waterways every day of the week this summer, a vote of confidence in downtown Chicago’s ability to draw office workers and tourists.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the yellow water taxi service, once a harbinger of summer to the city’s downtown commuters, has been either suspended, run only on weekends or run on a limited schedule. Parent company Wendella Tours and Cruises has grappled with post-pandemic dynamics like lingering labor challenges and the return of tourists in force to downtown, but not office commuters.

Beginning Saturday, the taxi service will once again run every day of the week for the first time since 2019. The boats will, for now, make only three stops, focusing on major commuter train stations, Streeterville and Chinatown, with no scheduled service to stops that existed before the pandemic at Chicago Avenue and Goose Island, taxi executive Andrew Sargis said.

His aim is to serve both commuters and tourists this summer, after previous years of catering to tourists and struggling with low numbers of office commuters. Sargis hopes the return to daily schedules will further boost service, and in turn encourage more commuters to go into their offices, he said. Wendella is also looking at major events this summer that have the potential to boost ridership, like the return of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race and the Democratic National Convention.

The move is “a significant milestone in the industry’s journey toward revitalization and reconnection post-COVID,” the company said in a statement.

In early March, Chicago-area office occupancy was about 56% of pre-pandemic levels, according to data from Kastle Systems, which measures employee swipes into the buildings and businesses where the security company is present. That was above the average of 10 large metro areas — 51% in mid-March — as schools began to let out for spring break in some cities.

Metra ridership, one sign of commuting patterns from the suburbs into the city, also affects the water taxi, which connects two Metra hubs to other parts of downtown. In 2023, average weekday Metra ridership was 51% of 2019 levels, and about 44% above 2022 levels, according to Metra data.

Tourism, meanwhile, has by many measures come back strong, with demand for hotel rooms last year reaching nearly 91% of 2019, according to Choose Chicago.

“We had a good amount of commuters, and on the weekend we had a good amount of tourists,” Sargis said. “Enough that it signaled to us that the market for ferry transportation had kind of recovered.”

In addition to the yellow Chicago Water Taxi, another company, Shoreline Sightseeing, also provides water taxi service on two routes that serve tourism-friendly sites like Navy Pier and the Museum Campus as well as Willis Tower. Shoreline planned to operate daily last summer.

In 2019, the Chicago Water Taxi carried some 400,000 passengers from March through the end of November. Service was suspended in 2020. Then, with fewer weekday commuters, the water taxi pivoted to focus on tourists in 2021 and 2022, operating for a shorter season and only on weekends.

Last year, the Chicago Water Taxi didn’t begin service until late September, and a lone boat operated only Tuesday through Thursday — the busiest commuting days — and only during rush hour. The company provided about 15,000 rides during the season, Sargis said.

The taxi company had faced labor challenges in prior years after losing and furloughing employees during the pandemic. Getting certified to operate the boats can take years, but training efforts are now coming to fruition, labor challenges are easing and the company is able to offer more frequent schedules, Sargis said.

This year, Wendella has already begun providing weekend service with one boat. The company plans to run more boats during the summer, increasing the frequency of service.

Rush-hour service will focus primarily on the stop that serves two Metra hubs, Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Station, and in between peak periods service will run to Chinatown, Sargis said.

The water taxi is also offering commuter passes, and partnerships with downtown office buildings to subsidize tickets for tenants. Sargis said the program is a win-win, encouraging more commuters to take the water taxi and more employees to head into offices.

The taxi service has no plans for now to return to its Chicago Avenue and Goose Island stops, but could in the future, he said. The company has kept its leases on the docks and maintains equipment there, and can run special service to the area if requested, such as corporate trips to the Salt Shed.

Regularly scheduled service is expected to run at least through the end of November.

“We think this year will be certainly a big success,” Sargis said. “We’re really excited to get back out there.”
