Bluegame’s New BG72
- By Victor Tan
- February 16, 2022
Bluegame’s BG72 is a combination of the Italy-based boatbuilder’s open (BG) and flybridge (BGX) ranges. At 74 feet, 9 inches length overall, the BG72 is the builder’s flagship and the largest yacht in the four-model BG series, which also includes a 42-, 54- and 62-footer.
From the yacht’s aft deck, the open-air main deck is accessible via stairs to port and starboard. At the top of the stairs is a forward-facing sun pad that accommodates at least three guests. Forward and amidships, there’s additional seating for eight and a table. On the foredeck, there’s a walk-around sun pad that can accommodate at least six. Abaft the sun pad is forward-facing lounge seating that, with a cushion removed, makes space for a centrally located table. It’s a neat setup for sundowners after a day of cruising.
The BG72’s semi-enclosed helm station, with an additional entrance belowdecks, is just forward of amidships. Bluegame offers two layouts belowdecks. In both setups, there are three staterooms and three heads. Each layout has an en suite stateroom forward and a twin-berth, en suite guest stateroom to port.
In one layout, the master stateroom is abaft amidships with access to the open aft deck. The stateroom has space for free-standing furniture. Its head is to starboard, with his-and-hers sinks. In this layout, the galley is abaft the portside guest stateroom, and there is C-shaped seating for at least nine with a coffee table to starboard.
The BG72’s second layout replaces the master stateroom aft with a full-beam belowdecks salon. There’s L-shaped seating for seven to starboard and a sofa for six to port. The galley location remains the same, making serving drinks a cinch. The forward VIP becomes the master stateroom, while an en suite twin-berth guest stateroom is added to starboard.
Guests can access the sun deck via stairs amidships on the main deck. Here, the sun pad accommodates four.
Standard powerplants for the Bluegame BG72 are twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 D13 diesels. Optional power is twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350 diesels. Top hops are reportedly 28 and 30 knots, respectively, and cruising speeds are reportedly 25 and 27 knots, respectively. Luca Santella and Zuccon International Project are responsible for design, interiors and exterior lines.

Bluegame BG72 Review: Outside the Box
Bluegame BG72 is a daring yacht designed for owners who love avant-garde design and plenty of space
Following the traditional view on yachts and boats, many owners have an idea of a strict separation of units into cruise yachts and day boats, which are mostly used as tenders. While the first category boasts spacious cabins and dining areas, the second is beloved for open spaces. Yet in recent years, new trends have begun to merge these two seemingly completely separate concepts into a unique yacht design.
New crossover from Bluegame Yachts
The most important name in this new crossover segment is Italian manufacturer Bluegame, part of the Sanlorenzo group since 2018. Starting as a manufacturer of small day cruisers with open cockpit, with the launch of the BX70 Bluegame introduced in 2019 a model with plenty of open space, a flybridge salon, and exterior design very much reminiscent of an explorer yacht crossed with a professional workboat.
In 2021, Bluegame took the BX70 design to the next level with the BG72. The new model takes all the radical design components of her predecessor and elevates them to a new level, adding an open salon on the upper deck. Like all Bluegame models, the BG72 was designed by naval architect Luca Santella, and we had the opportunity to take her out to sea for trials at the Cannes show last year.
Bluegame BG72 exterior
The first feature that caught our eye is the truly huge aft platform which is a natural extension of the spacious aft space. This platform extends almost two meters from the end of the hull, and the platform itself, with the help of strong hydraulics, can be further moved away from the stern by about a meter, and moved one meter up or down in relation to its starting position. The platform is connected to the deck and can serve as a walkway or a staircase leading down to the sea.
From the platform we stepped aboard, finding ourselves on the deck – the stern is basically another spacious teak platform protected on the sides by the high sides of the hull. The purpose of this space, which looks more like the stern of a work boat than a yacht, becomes clear when you realize how much space it offers to the owner, allowing them to use it however they want; filling it with deck chairs or sea toys. Raising the floor at the stern opens up the engine compartment and allows easier access to the engines, generator and air conditioners.

Finally, the superstructure of the ship begins with the main entrance to the interior via a wide sliding door that serve as windows of the salon. On both sides there are stairs that lead to the upper deck, to another salon. Like the rest of the interior, the main deck salon is somewhat unusually decorated, with plenty of dark wenge wood and gray fabrics, perhaps to contrast all those open spaces.
Bluegame BG72 layout
The salon and cabins are accessed via a small staircase below the stern, and the salon is furnished by a black glass dining table, a sofa to the port, a bar that separates the galley from the salon, and a comfortable L-shaped sectional served by a coffee table for coffee starboard.
Below deck there are two guest cabins, each with two single beds, each with it’s own bathroom, and the owner’s cabin is in the bow with a headboard oriented towards the very bow. Another layout is available, with the master cabin astern, and the salon and the galley mid-hull, with one guest cabin and VIP cabin in the bow. Anther staircase took us to the command post, the only fully closed space on the main deck.
The post enjoys excellent visibility and is served by a very clean control panel dominated by three multifunctional touchscreens, the steering wheel and throttle levers and a Volvo IPS joystick. This space allows for excellent visibility and offers protection from the elements. In the bow area of the command post, there is a bench facing the bow.
Outside on the main deck, in front of the command post, there is a large sunbed. Behind the command post on the main deck lies another salon, protected by a roll bar and furnished with a folding that can connect two sofas located opposite each other, a barbecue, sink and refrigerator combo, and with a sunbathing area astern.
Bluegame BG72 range and speed
Powered by two Volvo Penta IPS 1350 D13 engines, the Bluegame BG72 is a true cruiser that sails most efficiently at around 14 knots, with both engines consuming 111 liters per hour, while optimal cruising speed is 25 knots, with consumption around 316 liters.
Maximum speed is 30 knots. BG72 is excellent at breaking waves, especially because of the high bow, while in turns, even at high speeds, it tilts by a maximum of about ten degrees. Rolling is reduced by a gyroscopic stabilizer (standard equipment), which also helps in reducing tilting and jumping. Bluegame BG72 left an impression of a yacht whose daring design reflects well her daring capabilities – and will probably attract equally daring owners.

How Sanlorenzo and Bluegame created the all-new BG72
Looking at the all-new 22.71-metre BG72 by Bluegame, she certainly stands out. Not only are her sleek lines by Luca Santella telling of first-class Italian craftsmanship, but the balance of weight and volume has made way for a next-generation layout. Refusing to be categorised as an open, fisherman, day cruiser or walk-around yacht, the BG72 brings together some of the most important elements of superyacht design: aesthetics, practicality, style, comfort, elegance and performance.
All of this is powered by Sanlorenzo, as in 2018, the leading Italian shipbuilder welcomed the Bluegame brand into the family to enhance its range of innovative yachts. Since then, the intuitions of Bluegame’s founder, Olympic sailor and architect Luca Santella, have been given new light. “That step, that of Bluegame joining Sanlorenzo, has radically changed the archetype of the brand and has allowed new paths and opportunities to be explored. Sanlorenzo's compelling drive has given further development to the historic BG range and now its flagship, the BG72,” says Bluegame CEO Carla Demaria.
Another positive move has been the brand’s appointment of naval architect Lou Codega. As a creative known for his high-performance hull designs, Codega equipped the BG72 with its water lines and a balanced centre of gravity to ensure that the hull can always be navigated safely. With remarkable manoeuvrability, the BG72 remains comfortable in all conditions.
The new BG72 is the first open powerboat available on the market that intends to rival the flybridge design. With enclosed livable areas designed by Luca Santella & Zuccon International Project, those on board are made to feel a special connection with the surrounding environment – particularly on the yacht’s open upper deck and lower deck. Inspired by the BGX70, this unique space was designed to give continuity from the beach area to the saloon and owner's cabin and certifies Bluegame’s ability to provide owners with simple, yet original combinations of unprecedented layouts.
“For Bluegame, achieving simplicity is the result of an in-depth attention to design, a tailored execution and a sophisticated high-tech approach,” mentions Demaria. Another main driver of the brand’s design decisions is sustainability, as thanks to parent company Sanlorenzo, Bluegame adheres to a structured sustainable innovation strategy that intervenes throughout the purchasing, research, development and manufacturing processes. The company’s loyalty to the environment is also proven in its Blue Marine Foundation membership to help protect the oceans.
As a result of the company’s eco-awareness, the BG72 can be equipped with one of two efficient Volvo Penta IPS propulsion systems to reduce all fuel consumption and emissions. Able to carry 4,000 litres of fuel, the BG72 can reach a top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots with up to 16 passengers on board.
The strong values of Bluegame as well as the brand’s unique vessels can be seen at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. To find out more, contact the company directly here: www.bluegame.it
