Enksail Orion 49

orion 49 sailboat

The assignment was to design a robust and fast family cruising yacht, with a spacious deck saloon and suitable for sailing in cold regions. The result was the Orion 54 (design 167).

We’ve choosen to make a smaller version according the wishes of the client and we have chosen aluminum, partly for its robust looks like (this aluminum is unpainted) and partly because aluminum is an extremely solid and lightweight construction material.

The first Orion 49 has been built by Alubouw Fryslan and completed by Jurjen Mulder Jacht- en Scheepsbetimmering. In 2019, the renowned shipyard ‘de Gebroeders van Enkhuizen’ took over the building rights.

The length of 49ft is the result of a spacious cockpit, a deck saloon with a comfortable U-shaped settee, a spacious owner’s cabin with a separate shower / toilet, two guest cabins, a spacious U-shaped galley and a spacious lounge. In order to anchor close to the shore, to sail a nice river, or to allow the mooring in a nice harbor, we have choosen for a retractable daggerboard. Because of the keel is retractable, it’s possible to sail with various drafts, wherein said steering characteristics remain the same.

Exterior The cockpit has two long seats, with behind two steering positions. The seats have a good backrest and sit comfortably. The entire cockpit is kept as low as possible, to give the crew in heavy seas security. For that reason, there is also created sufficient space behind the helm. The mainsheet is attached to the deck saloon, so there is no maintrack in the cockpit. A fixed cockpit table provides guidance while sailing and offers a cozy eatery on the anchor or in port. A swimming platform is integrated in the transom and this is also the entrance when the boat is docked with the stern to the shore.

The anchor is stowed in the bowsprit, which is also used for the gennaker tack.

Interior The deck saloon is equipped with double glass and in the front, the centre window can be opened. On the starboard side, we created a large U-shaped settee and on the portside a card table. The galley is optically connected to the deck saloon and makes the entire room spacious and cozy.

The Enksail Orion 49 has two guest cabins with double births in the aft and an owners cabin in the front.

pilothouse cruising . I’ve narrowed choices to Bestevaer 49 and Orion 49. I have ruled out from Garcia, Boreal, and Onvi which do not have the pilothouse layout I am looking for. I am doubtful designs from Koopmans, Hoek, or van de Stad will .

The Bestevaer 49 is designed by Gerald Dykstra and built by KM Yachts - very accomplished and renowned for its .

The Orino 49 is designed by Kees van de Stadt at Yacht Design (no relation to van de Stadt Design) and built by Gebroeders van Enkhuizen - also accomplished, smaller yard than KM Yachts, with more experience building in than aluminum.

I have closely followed this forum’s discussions on pilothouses and the building of Noelex77’s Bestevaer 49 - truly outstanding.

I am interested in thoughts on how the Bestevaer 49 and Orion 49 might compare in terms of sailing performance, long-term livability, and sturdiness?

Thank you.

Boat: Bestevaer.
. The planning is a very exciting time, almost as good as gradually seeing your wishes come to life as the build progresses.

I don't know about the relative performance sailing differences between the Orion and the Bestevaer. The Bestevaer and I imagine the Orion are custom boats, which means you can specify anything you want. Thinner or thicker aluminium, fixed, lifting or swing with multitude of drafts, different sail plans with aluminium or carbon spars. The ends (bow and stern can be left bare keeping weight at a minimum or fitted out increasing the accommodation) etc etc. These decisions will make more difference to sailing performance than any fundamental difference between the models, which on paper look otherwise very similar.

Building a custom yacht is huge commitment in time and so sit down with each and make sure you are comfortable with their approach. You also need to look very carefully at other boats they have built, crawl around in the hidden areas and assess the quality of the . If you are serious, boatbuilders often encourage you to talk directly with the as part of the build process. They will be the best people to discuss the expected performance differences.

Good luck. Send me a private message if you have any specific questions.

Boat: Custome Open BOC 50' cutter rig
when the keel is extended it leaves a slot that acts like a sailing with a bucket tied to it as the slots have proven to reduce the performance of the boats that have swinging keels. I would go for fixed keel enclosed in Aluminium as I have on my boat the lead is encased and keep is one solid structure not independent of the boat's build. In its all about time and finally personal taste. Good luck with your up and coming, exciting adventure into semi custom boat building.

PS, one last word, go or the boat with the lightest . As a reference, my boat is a 50' Aluminium, is 8.5 tons. Granted, it does not have a pilothouse, however that should not add too much to the displacement, in my experience I would aim for a design around 10 to 12 tons max 12.5 tons. You will enjoy sparkling performance.

is german only (but the page has a link to ask for an pdf). Quite interesting technology-wise. -- If I had the funds I'd go for a Bestevaer/KM yacht (btw. the open yards promises to be interesting, Vinson, hint hint..).

We added a large permanent for and a bench seat just forward of the mizzenmast. I would never own a after living with all the advantages of twin keels.

Enksail Orion

  • Introduction
  • The Collection

Gebroeders van Enkhuizen is exclusive builder of Enksail Yachts. Enksail sailing yachts are characterized by spacious pilothouses: beautiful to look at, but also offers comfort and safety. During bad weather conditions, everyone can sit inside in a dry, warm and safe way. There is a 360 degrees visibility in the pilothouse, which is fine both while sailing and in the marina. This makes an Enksail ideally suited for long trips and long stays on board. The Enksail line has three models (Noordkaper, Halcyon and Orion)

The Enksail Orion is an aluminium go-anywhere cruiser/explorer sailing yacht design by the famous Dutch designer Kees van de Stadt of Satellite Yacht Design. The Orion range consists of a 49 and 54-footer.
