Top 10 largest Catamarans in the world

Characterised as a multi-hulled watercraft, a catamaran is a marine vessel comprising two proportioned hulls giving her greater stability and manoeuvrability. Catamarans also have a shallow draft which enables them to enter unexplored regions beyond the reach of sailing yachts or cruise ships.

Their invention is attributed to the Austronesian peoples of Southeast Asia, while the first European Catamaran was built in the 16th century by scientist William Petty. Capable of attaining greater speeds, catamarans are used for recreational sailing, cruising and racing. Modern Catamarans have luxurious features and marvellous design, which makes them enticing.

Let us have a look at the top 10 biggest catamarans in the world.

Table of Contents

1. Hodor ( 217 Ft.)

Hodor

Renowned as the world’s largest floating toy box, the 66.2 m long SHADOWCAT Hodor was built by Astilleros Armon in Spain. Incat Crowther and YCTS. Ltd worked on her functional design and naval architecture, while the interiors were chosen by Oliver Design. Painted grey with vibrant orange lines running across its hull, the catamaran is as robust as it looks.

Launched in 2019, she has a maximum sailing speed of 22.5 knots derived from two MTU diesel engines. With a 14-metre beam, she has a gross tonnage of 1525 tonnes respectively. In terms of LOA, she ranks among the top five per cent in the world. She defeats her counterparts both by average speed and volume.

She is donned with aluminium; her hull, deck and even superstructure are made of this malleable and corrosion-resistant metal. Presently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands, Hodor is a treasure-house of water sports gear, filled with nine jet skis, four water bikes, laser dinghies, snorkelers, fishing equipment etc.

The empty space below the main deck is reserved for the Seamagine Aurora-3 submersible which will be delivered soon. Its main attraction is the 17-metre Nor-Tech 560 sports centre console attached to a hydraulic lift system for putting it in water. The largest catamaran is managed by 20 crew members and staff.

Low drag, a consequence of the specially designed twin-hull, makes the catamaran glide gracefully on the water while optimising efficiency and low fuel consumption. It has a 90,000-litre fuel tank which enables the power cat to cover 5000 nautical miles without a stopover. Driven by two 3400 HP engines, the superyacht has a top speed of 21 knots and carries three tenders, water sports gear and several jet skis.

Exploring the World’s 11 Largest Sailing Catamarans: Rankings and Key Facts

Table of Contents

Discover the top 11 largest sailing catamarans in the world, including rankings and key information about their size and capabilities. Learn about the feasibility of solo sailing, transatlantic crossings, and the risks of capsizing. Plus, explore reasons why catamarans may not be as popular as other types of vessels.”

Introduction: 11 largest sailing catamarans

This article explores the world of the largest sailing catamarans, ranking the top 11 largest vessels by size and providing key information about their capabilities. Before delving into the specifics, it’s important to understand what a catamaran is and why it’s such a popular type of vessel. A catamaran is a multihull boat that has two parallel hulls of equal size. This design provides numerous advantages, including increased speed, stability, and spaciousness compared to monohull boats. Catamarans are popular among sailors for their efficiency and comfort, making them an appealing option for cruising and racing alike.

Top 11 Largest Sailing Catamarans in the World:

The world’s largest sailing catamarans are truly awe-inspiring feats of engineering and design. Topping the list is the Black Pearl, a massive 106.7-meter vessel that boasts cutting-edge technology and luxury amenities. Other impressive entries on the list include the White Rabbit, the Hemisphere, and the Fujin. Each of these vessels represents the pinnacle of catamaran design and engineering, with unique features and capabilities that set them apart from the rest. Whether you’re interested in the latest in high-tech sailing or simply appreciate the beauty of these majestic vessels, the world’s largest sailing catamarans are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Can a Catamaran Cross the Atlantic?

Crossing the Atlantic in a catamaran is a major undertaking that requires careful planning and preparation. While it’s certainly possible to make the journey in a catamaran, there are several factors to consider before embarking on such a voyage. Catamarans have certain advantages over monohull boats for long-distance cruising, including greater speed and stability, as well as more living space. However, they also have some disadvantages, such as a higher center of gravity and a wider beam, which can make them more susceptible to rolling in rough seas. Ultimately, the decision to cross the Atlantic in a catamaran should be made based on careful consideration of these factors, as well as personal experience and skill level.

How Big of a Catamaran Can One Person Sail?

The size of a catamaran that one person can sail depends on several factors, including the individual’s experience level and the complexity of the vessel. In general, smaller catamarans with simpler rigging systems are easier for one person to handle, while larger catamarans with more complex systems require a crew. The key to successful single-handed sailing in a catamaran is having a thorough understanding of the vessel’s systems and being able to anticipate and respond to changing conditions quickly and effectively. With the right training and experience, however, it’s possible to sail a catamaran solo even up to a length of around 40-50 feet.

Do Large Catamarans Capsize?

While it’s true that catamarans have a reputation for being stable and safe, there is still a risk of capsizing, particularly with larger vessels. The risk of capsize depends on several factors, including the design and construction of the vessel, the conditions it’s operating in, and the skill of the crew. Generally speaking, catamarans are more stable than monohulls, thanks to their wide beam and low center of gravity. However, this stability can be compromised in extreme conditions, such as heavy seas or high winds. In order to minimize the risk of capsizing, it’s important to ensure that the vessel is well-maintained and that the crew has the appropriate level of training and experience.

Why Are Catamarans Not Popular?

There are several reasons why catamarans are not as popular as some other types of vessels, especially in certain regions of the world. One of the primary reasons is their high initial cost. Compared to monohull boats of the same length, catamarans are generally more expensive due to their larger size, greater stability, and more complex systems. This can make them less accessible for many people who are interested in sailing.

Another reason why catamarans are not as popular is that they require specialized skills and knowledge to operate. Catamarans have different handling characteristics than monohull boats, and they require a different approach to sailing. This means that sailors who are used to operating monohulls may find it difficult to adapt to catamarans, which can make them less appealing.

Finally, there are some misconceptions about catamarans that have contributed to their relative lack of popularity. For example, some people believe that catamarans are less seaworthy than monohull boats, or that they are less comfortable in heavy seas. However, in reality, catamarans can be just as seaworthy and comfortable as monohulls, and they offer a number of advantages in terms of speed, stability, and spaciousness. Ultimately, the decision to sail a catamaran or a monohull boat comes down to personal preference, experience, and the specific requirements of the sailing journey.

Hemisphere-1

Description

The 145 ft / 44.2 m Custom catamaran ‘ Hemisphere ‘ is the world’s largest catamaran and was was built in 2011 by Pendennis. This piece of marine art came off the drawing boards of Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and the yacht’s interior was designed by Michael Leach. The lines on this boat remind me of VPLP´s earlier performance catamaran designs – read our Lagoon 67 review to see what we mean.

Living Space

Well, we are obviously talking top end luxury on this Supercat. She will sleep up to 12 guests in 5 comfortable en-suite cabins. Plus a crew of 10 crew onboard. The 2 VIP cabins on the main deck have access to the forward terrace lounge forward. It’s a yacht that not even the Sunreef Yachts luxury range can compete with.

VPLP has a solid reputation for designing multihulls with projects ranging from ultra-light carbon racing cats to the 138-foot custom catamaran Douce France—previously the world’s largest luxury cat—built at Alumarine in 1999.

Wow Factor Michael Leach was responsible for the interior design – and he had a lot of space to work with. She’s very luxurious yet practical. Watersports include windsurfers, wakeboards, Seabobs, waterskis and so on. The port hull has a fully stocked dive centre that can handle both Air and NITROX tank fills. Just raise the lift-up steps aft to reveal the ultimate dive locker.

Let´s just say, there is a lot of it on Hemisphere!

biggest catamaran world

The oval dining table for 12 has a map of the world etched into its glass top. There´s also a huge dining area below.

Huge Space The huge teak aft deck below is a real WOW factor and this space fits 2 seating areas, a large sunbed and a big oval table set in the shade for lunch when the sun is overhead. The entire area can be closed off with an ‘Eissen glass’ screen and cooled from A/C units located under the flybridge sun pad.

On the main deck, 2 curved sliding doors connect the aft deck with its dining and lounging areas to a 100 m2 saloon, with several zones including a seating area with fantastic views.

Forward of that is a small lobby that leads to the guest cabin in the port hull, a day head to starboard and 2 VIP cabins.

Signature Sugar Scoops And those daybeds at the top of the sugar scoops- let´s not forget those. The whole yacht has been designed with an incredible attention to detail.

biggest catamaran world

The crew quarters occupy much of the starboard hull. Forward is the mess and laundry area, and aft there are three well sized cabins. A happy crew means a happy cuise!

Hemisphere has a selection of tenders including a Castoldi jet tender stowed in the starboard hull and a RIB stowed between the two that is launched via bomber-like hatches.

5 Star Accomodation The TV room is on the main deck, and puts most 5 star hotels to shame. There are Wi-Fi and socket connections, Satcom and Cellular communications, Satellite TV, iPod docking stations and MP3 connections throughout the boat. There’s also 61″ plasma TV in the lower saloon, 42″ plasmas in the VIP staterooms and 32″ LCD TVs in the guest staterooms.

It´s all a far cry from the world´s best selling catamaran! (Read our Lagoon 380 review if you want to compare notes on the 2 boats 😉 )

And she can sail, too. She’ll regularly see 10 knots, and downwind the mainsail and gennaker add up to a total sail area exceeding 12,000 feet: Hemisphere can top out at 20 knots. It’s all powered by that mouth-droppping 53m (174-foot) 5.8-ton carbon mast by Lorima, which flys 865 m2 (9,321 sq ft) to 1118 m2 (12,037 sq ft) of carbon and spectra sails. Incredibly, this amazing catamaran is her owner’s first yacht. It’s a good job he can afford the crew!

A Catamaran with a Garage? Yes. One of the most famous Hemisphere catamaran design features is the “ailes de mouette” or seagull wings under the bridge deck which minimises bridge slam. On Hemisphere the wings serve a secondary purpose: there’s a watertight garage between the two hulls within the seagull wings.

For such a large vessel, she has a very low drag so only requires relatively small engines for her size : energy consumption and noise are kept to a minimum. Midships in each hull are 2 engine rooms with 2x Caterpillar C12s 490hp engines as the power source. There are 3 Caterpillar generators with a total output of 251kW, and there is a thruster fore and aft in both hulls to make life easier in the marina.

Other technical gizmos include a Radio Zeeland control and alarm system with 550 functions including monitoring standing rigging loads to fridge temperatures, plus programmable lighting; navigation, communication and the entertainment system that was supplied by HST with control units in each cabin.

Watersports

Check out this list of toys. Well, if you have the space…..

This cat has been designed for maximising watersports fun. The owners are keen divers, and in fact the initial brief for the yacht came from this angle. A hydraulic swim platform means access to the water is easy, and a springboard, attached to the stern, is a favourite with guests.

All the Toys and More The yacht carries dive scooters, two Seabobs, wakeboards, paddleboards and mountain bikes for onshore exploration. You name it, Hemisphere probably has it covered, including:

  • Certified PADI dive centre
  • 16.4m F&S Custom sports fishing boat with 2 x 1150hp engines,
  • 8.2m Scorpion tender with 400hp engine,
  • 4.5m Castoldi jet tender with 125hp,
  • Full scuba diving facilities for 12 guests,
  • 4 x SeaBobs,
  • Windsurfers,
  • Kneeboards & tows,
  • SUP (Stand up paddle board,
  • 4m inflatable water trampoline,
  • Inflatables,
  • 1m high 2.4m professional diving board,
  • Snorkelling gear,
  • Sports tournament standard fishing equipment

If you like exploring the underwater world, then you´ll like this next bit.

Hemisphere has a PADI-certified, Nitrox-capable dive centre for up to 12. The ship’s captain is a qualified dive instructor. And then there is the 16.4m (53.8ft) sports fishing tender for getting to those secluded dive sites as well as being a tournament-standard fishing boat.

Entertainment

  • State of the art audio visual systems, satellite television
  • Wi-Fi and socket connections
  • 61″ plasma in lower salon,
  • 42″ plasma in VIPs and
  • 32″ LCD’s in guest cabins,
  • Ipod/MP3 connections throughout the yacht.
  • Sat TV (Seatel)Kaleidescape system with a big movie library

Hemisphere Plan

biggest catamaran world

This next section ( Pros and Cons ) is a bit tongue in cheek for this particular custom cat. It’s a process we normally go through on our other multihull reviews. We thought it would be fun!

  • All of that space! Come on, this is the largest catamaran around, you are not going to feel claustrophobic on her.
  • The garage is a unique feature on this boat. When you have that many toys, you need somewhere for them to go.
  • For such a large vessel, she moves. You should see double digits on a beam reach in a decent breeze.
  • If you break out into a cold sweat coming into the marina on a windy day, just think of the poor skipper on Hemisphere. Mind you, he or she has bow thrusters and plenty of power in the engines. Oh and the skipper is getting paid to deal with the stress.
  • She’s not the cheapest boat to run. Those marina fees are pretty eye watering, and don’t talk to me about filling up with diesel. If you go on the usual adage of 5-10% of the boat’s value on maintenance every year, you are into 7 figures. I can believe that when you think of the cost of the crew
  • Most of the power for the service batteries comes from the generators. A more modern design would probably have focused more on green energy. Still, there’s always room for more customisation!

Hemisphere was launched in 2011 and she still sits at the top of the Supercats list. That gives you an idea of how ambitious this yacht build was to begin with. This is the catamaran that all other luxury multihulls aspire to, a work of art from the same team that designed the humble Lagoon 380.

FAQs: Hemisphere Catamaran

How Much Did Hemisphere Cost to Build? Well, that´s not a number that is easy to get hold of, but we are looking at north of $50 million

Can you charter Hemisphere? How much is it for a week? Yes you can, this boat is probably one of the most luxurious dive charters around, but it will cost you more than a Leopard from Sunsail. You are looking at around $250k a week. Everything is negotiable of course.

The world's largest catamaran is so big it has its own trampoline and Jacuzzi. Here's what it looks like

Those who want the trappings of a super-yacht with the feeling of being on a wind-powered vessel should look no further than Hemisphere, the largest sailing catamaran in the world.

Designed and produced by Pendennis Shipyard , Hemisphere sits at over 44 meters (145 feet) long, or just under half a football field, and measures almost 17 meters (54.5 feet) across. Inside, the yacht can house up to 12 guests with two identical master suites along with multiple other bedrooms, all of which are stored in the boat's hull.

The layout of the boat is simple: there is a bottom deck, which includes bedrooms for both guests and staff; a middle deck which houses the vast seating area; and a top deck which houses the Jacuzzi and tanning areas. Keeping the bedrooms in the hull means there is far more space for seating or eating areas, which helps the Hemisphere feel twice as big.

The yacht isn't available to purchase, but it can be chartered for around $280,000 (£185,000) a week. The price includes access to the extensive water sports facilities and a full crew of 10, some of who are certified diving instructors.

Here's what it looks like.

The Hemisphere is powered by two 490 horsepower engines which can achieve a top speed of around 20 knots (23 mph). However, a cruising speed of 11 knots (12 mph) is recommended for comfort.

biggest catamaran world

While Hemisphere can sleep 12, the capacity for entertaining is almost endless. Beyond the sofas and seating areas, the yacht comes with a speaker system that can play in any area, giant TVs, and WiFi.

biggest catamaran world

With an open back end, the yacht can provide truly stunning views and, when the weather turns, a canopy can be rolled out and the temperature controlled by air conditioning.

biggest catamaran world

The Hemisphere is larger than the average house standing at around eight meters from the water to the top level. Due to a relatively small draft height (the distance from the bottom of the hull to the waterline) of three meters, the yacht can be taken through shallower waters than most other giant vessels.

biggest catamaran world

The upper deck is designed for sunny-day comfort with a giant Jacuzzi, sun loungers, and a table that can seat 12 comfortably. If the weather turns, a canopy can be drawn over the area which is accessible via a stairway. It also provides a good view of the sunset.

biggest catamaran world

Because the Hemisphere is a catamaran, it has an unusual feature: there is a 4.8-meter trampoline on the front which can also double as a calm place to relax, suspended above the water.

biggest catamaran world

At night the Hemisphere can light up using specialised lights, controlled from inside the yacht. When moored off-shore, the lighting looks spectacular and sets the boat apart from others.

biggest catamaran world

Everything is catered for by the crew of the yacht who both live and work onboard. Many of the crew specialise in water sports — an area the yacht excels in.

biggest catamaran world

For those who like fishing, the Hemisphere comes with a 16-meter, custom-made boat that can travel up to 25 knots (30 mph). Getting ashore is made easier by the two tenders, one of which measures in at 8 meters while the other is 4.5.

biggest catamaran world

The main deck includes a 100-square-meter space which is sub-divided into different sections, all with their own specific purpose.

biggest catamaran world

The interior of the vessel was designed by Michael Leach Design (MLD) to be modern but tasteful, using natural materials such as wood. Here you can see the staircase from the middle deck into the lower deck, where the bedrooms are housed.

biggest catamaran world

The Hemisphere includes two VIP rooms which can be opened up into one master bedroom if the owner wishes. The rooms include an ensuite, TV, vast amounts of cupboard space and any other comfort that could be found in a mansion.

biggest catamaran world

The tables, of which there are many, include engravings of a world map to remind diners that they are exploring earth just like Christopher Columbus — just with more style and comfort.

Here's a labelled cross-section of the main deck which runs throughout the entire yacht.

largest-catamaran-in-the-world-artexplorer-frederic-jousset

On board with Frédéric Jousset, future owner of the world's largest catamaran

The fearless Frenchman charts his adventures, from early internet exploring to globe-trotting with a catamaran stuffed with art. Stewart Campbell tries to keep up with his life story

When he was 16, Frédéric Jousset made a bet with his best friend: the winner would be the first to visit every country in the world. There is a little contention over who is actually winning. In 1987, Jousset visited East Germany, which his friend claims shouldn’t count as it is no longer a country. If you take this view, they are tied on 114 countries each, with 79 left to see.

“I love to explore,” explains the London-based Frenchman and boss of outsourcing giant Webhelp. The wiry 49-year-old is suffering from a cold on the morning we meet at his office a few steps from the Ritz, but he still manages to crackle with a rare energy when describing how he plans to win the bet: by building the biggest sailing catamaran in the world and taking it, well, everywhere.

  • Italian Sea Group to build 46.5m sailing catamaran ArtExplora

In doing so he’ll be indulging another passion – cultural expropriation. Jousset is an art lover who wants everyone to be. At 35, as a newly minted multimillionaire, he donated a million euros to the Louvre. “The Louvre people were shocked because most of their donors were either old men or rich American families,” he says. “And here comes this guy in his mid-thirties they’d never heard of.”

Jousset directed the money be used to attract new audiences to the museum; to make its grand rooms more accessible to a non-traditional demographic. Fifteen years later, he’s supercharging this kind of cultural outreach by commissioning ArtExplorer, his 46-metre catamaran project, which has been designed as  a superyacht-cum-gallery that will sail to far-flung parts of the globe, democratising the arts as it goes.

The idea came to him on a sailing charter a few years ago. Jousset was at the helm during a night passage to Stromboli, his girlfriend sleeping below. “I was looking at the stars and thinking how much I loved sailing, and then  I started to think about how much I loved culture and what I could contribute. I could add another museum, but it’s nothing new. Private foundations have been done, but I thought that no one has thought of the sea, of using a boat as a platform.

“And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. A boat is an optimal platform because it can go anywhere, and it’s a great place to host people. It had to be a sailing yacht because it had to be green and it had to be big to host as many people as possible, so a catamaran makes sense. And that’s how I started the process.”

When it debuts at La Biennale di Venezia in 2023, ArtExplorer won’t only be the world’s biggest sailing catamaran, eclipsing 44.2-metre Hemisphere , it will be the only yacht of its type in the world, housing a vast main deck exhibition space as well as all the customary superyacht accommodations and appointments. Jousset breaks the programme down: one month will be reserved for him and his guests; another month will be dedicated to yard work; it will be available to charter for two months; for the remaining eight months of the year ArtExplorer will be used to host exhibitions.

It’s a wild idea, but one Jousset is profoundly committed to. The boat will be built “to the highest superyacht standards”, he says. Eight teams competed for the job of designing the yacht, which was ultimately won by Axel de Beaufort, who heads his own design studio, in collaboration with Japanese designer Oki Sato. It was “love at first sight”, says Jousset of their design, which is all sculptural curves and comfortable minimalism – itself a piece of art.  A shipyard is expected to be announced imminently for the three-year build.

Until then, Jousset will be preoccupied by the small task of running Webhelp, with its 140 offices in 35 countries and 55,000 employees. Today, the company is a world-leading business solutions provider, its success a testament to Jousset’s entrepreneurial nous and nimble mind. But that doesn’t mean it has always been easy – there has been no shortage of dramatic knife-edge moments in Webhelp’s 20-year story.

The most significant came early in the company’s life. In the late 1990s, Jousset and his business partner Olivier Duha were working at consultancy Bain & Company, but neither saw a future there. “I realised that doing PowerPoint presentations for other people was not something that fascinated me. We thought: ‘Why don’t we join forces and try to find something else?’”

Their idea was to scour North America for a tech business they could import to Europe. “We came across a Canadian company called Webhelp, which had just announced it had raised C$40 million (£22.8m). We thought we could team up and launch it in Europe,” says Jousset. The company was an early pioneer in the internet search industry. Users could input a query and within three minutes a “web wizard” would locate relevant content and push it to them via a novel chat feature.

“It was the first human-assisted real-time search engine,” says Jousset. “Nowadays it makes you laugh because it looks like the Stone Age, but you have to remember it was 1999. We thought it was just brilliant.” The key to the business were the people answering users’ queries – Webhelp had outsourced everything to India. Jousset and Duha travelled to Canada and cut a deal: if they could raise $5 million in four weeks, they could launch Webhelp as a joint venture in France.

“Sometimes in life you do stupid things that you can’t explain and we thought that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So we resigned by fax and had four weeks to find $5 million.” They ended up raising $16 million, including a sizeable chunk from LVMH boss Bernard Arnault, but decided to only take five. “That was the second stupid thing we did – today you would take the money! But we thought we would be too diluted if we took all $16 million.”

They launched Webhelp in France in 2000, outsourcing the web wizard work to Romania, which had a ready population of young, hungry, tech-savvy graduates with a good grasp of French. “We had big traffic, lots of press, lots of noise, like we were new French heroes disrupting the way people search. One month later I’m sitting at my desk and a friend called me and said: ‘Have you checked out this new website called Google? It does what you do, but a bit different.’

“I remember seeing the Google homepage for the first time, all white with just this box. The question we asked to demonstrate the efficiency for human search engines was ‘How old is Mickey Mouse?’ So I keyed that in and boom, a million pages, in milliseconds. And suddenly it’s like you’re selling candles and someone else is selling electricity. And then we saw their traffic…”

The Webhelp ship started sinking – fast. The company was burning cash and had to pivot. “Our remaining asset was our Romanian workforce. They were cheap, they were smart, and we had a chat technology that was quite efficient. We thought: ‘Why don’t we go to the Amazons, the first e-commerce websites, and offer a white-label customer service using our chat technology.’”

They got contracts with five French websites, taking a cut of every product sold, and at the end of their first year in business had revenues of €80,000 (£69,000). They added email management to their offering and at the close of 2001 had 20 clients and revenues of €500,000. “Then our clients said: ‘When our customers are really angry, they want to reach out and talk to someone, so you should come up with a solution for that.’” French call centres already existed, but no one had thought of putting them offshore, so Jousset and Duha opened a call centre in French-speaking Morocco. “And then things sky-rocketed,” he says. “We started with 40 people, then 100, then 200, then 3,000 and then all of a sudden we had 5,000 people.”

In 2010, revenues had grown to €200 million and last year the company was valued at €2.4 billion after diversifying into the full suite of business solutions. It’s been almost breakneck growth, but Jousset remains unfazed; he clearly doesn’t rattle easily, which is important given some of his extracurricular passions. He recently scaled Everest and is an extreme skier and diver, regularly going down to 50 metres.

“At that depth, if anything goes wrong with your bottles or equipment, you’re screwed,” he says with cool sangfroid. “It’s not just for the sake of it. It’s not that I want to kill myself, but it’s something I need because otherwise I am not happy. It’s more a positive thing, I guess.” He can’t explain where it comes from, this need to live an edgy existence, but his sister has it too: she’s a foreign correspondent and documentary maker who regularly embeds herself in some of the world’s sketchier places.

He has always pushed himself and excelled academically, ultimately graduating from HEC Paris, the country’s leading business school. Then came mandatory national service in the French Army, but instead of simply riding it out, he extended his service and volunteered for the paratroop regiment, rising to platoon commander.

“I remember the first day joining the regiment – you had to walk for 120 kilometres with full gear on, weighing probably 20 kilos. And you had to do this in less than 36 hours, which meant walking constantly, in leather boots. I remember walking while sleeping, but once you do that it’s immensely useful because when you do business negotiations and it’s 3am, everyone around you is tired, but I’m not because I know I can walk for 36 hours. That confidence in yourself from a physical standpoint holds forever.”

His mind he takes care of by retreating to a monastery in Normandy each year and handing over all his technology to the monks. He doesn’t speak for three days, which provides a useful reset. His soul, meanwhile, belongs to the sea. Until this point, he has always chartered yachts, including, memorably, the massive 78.55-metre classic, SS Delphine . In 2008 he was engaged and due to be married in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and had booked the superyacht for brunch. “But 10 days before the wedding I got cold feet and called it off,” he says.

His charter broker didn’t care. “No can do,” came the answer when Jousset asked if he could cancel the booking. The only thing his broker could do was switch the dates, so Jousset decided to take the yacht on his birthday, 3 May, add two more days to the charter and pack it with 25 friends – and his new girlfriend. “We went cruising from Saint-Tropez to Portofino and back. It is the best memory. We partied like there was no tomorrow. And I realised how much I liked it, so that’s how I got into superyachts – by accident.”

Nowadays, he’s much more deliberate in his yachting choices, and has a very clear vision for ArtExplorer: he wants it to become the centrepiece of a foundation that will one day include planes, trucks, buses – whatever moves and is capable of spreading culture beyond the walls of museums and galleries. In 20 years he’d like it to be the “equivalent of Greenpeace for art and culture”, he says, with millions of followers, subscribers and volunteers.

It’s a hugely ambitious plan, but coming from a guy who has conquered the business world and Mount Everest, I’d say he’s a safe bet. And by then he might have won his, too.

Both experienced yachting enthusiasts and those new to the world of yacht charters choose to holiday and hold events aboard luxury catamarans for their unique advantages over monohulled vessels, and these 10 largest luxury catamarans available for charter are amongst the best available today. These impeccably maintained catamarans provide greater stability while cruising and at anchor, and the wider beam creates more space on board for hosting dockside events and revelling in the outdoor lifestyle wherever you travel. Of note are the huge cockpits that are weather protected, spacious foredecks with trampolines, and most large catamarans also have a flybridge for sunbathing and alfresco dining.

Catamarans are also generally considered to be faster than monohulls, and can often enter shallower bays to find hidden gems thanks to their low draft. A final catamaran benefit is twin engines to match the twin hulls, increasing safety and manoeuvrability while travelling between isles.

The main deck acts as a social hub, with an expansive salon, an elegant dining area, a well-equipped galley, and cockpits forward and aft. The aft cockpit has a giant teak dining table for alfresco meals, too. The crew quarters are also located on the main deck, with a cabin in each hull providing space for two crew.

The lower deck is dedicated to guests, with each hull housing two staterooms and two VIPs with en suites. Conversely, the upper deck is reserved for the owner, The owner’s suite features walk-in closets, a coffee station, and a private aft terrace. Higher still, the scenic flybridge is equipped with a plush lounge, a bar, and a nap station, because who doesn’t like to catch zs after cocktails?

The cat is set to deliver not only a lavish onboard experience but epic water adventures, too. The tender and water toys set up was “meticulously planned,” according to Two Oceans. The tender sits aft on the owner’s deck and can be moved about by a hydraulic crane. In addition, the foredeck, or what the yard calls an “aquatic playground,” houses two Jet Skis that can be launched and retrieved by another dedicated crane. The foredeck also has space for other toys and equipment, such as dive compressors.

“This floating haven is poised to redefine the concept of luxury on the water, setting a new standard for catamarans in its class,” Two Oceans said in a statement.

The World's Largest Cruise Ship Is Coming in January—Here's What It's Like Inside

By Jessica Puckett

A Look Inside the World's Largest Cruise Ship Launching January 2024

The biggest thing to ever hit cruising is coming in January 2024, when Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas —which will be the largest cruise ship in the world —will debut to passengers for the first time.

With capacity for nearly 10,000 passengers and crew, Icon of the Seas is billed as part all-inclusive resort, part theme park, and a massive destination unto itself . Clocking in at 250,380 gross tons and measuring nearly a quarter mile long (1,198 feet to be exact), the vast ship will sport a total of 20 decks, 18 of which will be accessible to guests.

The ship will be divided into eight different “neighborhoods,” each with their own distinct atmospheres, dining options, and activities. “ Icon of the Seas is truly what we call a white paper ship,” Anna Drescher, manager of architectural design, new building and innovation for Royal Caribbean group, said in a video statement . “The reason that we call it that is we start with a blank sheet of sketch paper, so it truly is starting fresh.”

In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland. Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas.

The ship's typical seven-day itineraries include three at-sea days, so passengers have time to fully enjoy the endless choices of amenities on board. “We want guests to walk up to the ship and just have this moment of: I can’t believe that’s where I’m going ,” said Jennifer Goswami, the line’s senior manager of product development.

Here's a look at the enormous scale of the new ship and what to expect on board.

exterior and top deck icon of the seas

When it begins sailing, the Icon of the Seas will offer a total of 2,805 staterooms that can hold 5,610 passengers at double occupancy, or a maximum of 7,600 guests. Passengers can choose from a whopping 28 different room types, including Sunset Suites with wraparound balconies and Family Infinite Balcony staterooms with bunkbeds fit for a family of up to six.

balconies of the ultimate family townhouse

The largest suite on board will be the three-story, 1,772-square-foot “Ultimate Family Townhouse,” which comes with its own movie theater, ping-pong table, karaoke, and a slide between floors. It can sleep up to eight people and costs approximately $75,000 per week.

central park neighborhood icon of the seas

Among the eight "neighborhoods," or sections of the ship with distinct ambiance, are Central Park, which offers greenery and sidewalk cafes, and The Hideaway, which aims for a European beach club aesthetic. There's also The Suite Neighborhood, Surfside, Thrill Island, Chill Island, The Royal Promenade, and the Aquadome.

The ship's 2,350 crew members will also get their own neighborhood, complete with amenities like a gaming room and hair salon.

thrill island waterpark icon of the seas

Another superlative for Icon will be sporting the largest waterpark at sea. The park, called Category 6, features six different record-breaking waterslides, including the tallest onboard waterslide. There will also be a free-fall slide, plus a raft-style slide for four passengers to ride together.

royal bay pool icon of the seas

Seven pools and nine whirlpools will be located throughout the ship, including the first infinity pool on a cruise ship to be suspended in the air. The Royal Bay pool, located on the 15th deck, will break the record for largest pool at sea, holding an astounding 40,000 gallons of water.

main dining room icon of the seas

Across the towering vessel, there'll be more than 20 food venues and 15 bars and nightlife experiences, including a sweeping three-level main dining room.

Among the options for grabbing a drink will be the line's first onboard swim-up bar, a walk-up Champagne bar, and a bar specializing in coffee cocktails like espresso martinis.

aqua theater icon of the seas

On the entertainment front, Royal Caribbean has hired 75 performers to titillate guests across three cavernous theaters. The Absolute Zero ice arena will feature shows with Olympic-level skaters, while the AquaTheater will combine the talents of divers, robots, and skateboarders.

In the Royal Theater, a 16-piece orchestra (the largest one at sea), will accompany shows like the Wizard of Oz.

In smaller venues throughout the ship, like the dueling piano bar, 50 live musicians and comedians will perform each night, making it possible for every type of passenger to find something that fits their style.

  • 10 Largest Cities In The World

The world's population currently teeters at eight billion people. That is a lot of humans milling about, trying to make a go at this crazy little thing called life. And within this stupendous, sentient sea, there are many megacities that offer community, opportunity, and identity. The following is a list of the ten largest metropolitans (in terms of the estimated 2022 population). At first glance, they can appear overwhelming. But each of these concrete organisms can provide a lifetime of subtle sifting that slowly reveals new treasures with each street, canal, market, monument, etc. You just have to dive in.

1. Tokyo, Japan - 37,274,000

Tokyo, Japan

Far and away, the world's most-populated metropolitan, Tokyo, Japan, has a life of its own. The nation's capital city is located on the East-Central coast of the island of Honshu , within the Kantō region. This fast-paced yet humble; crowded yet clean; futuristic yet steeped in spiritual tradition; two-time host of the Summer Olympics has to be seen to be believed. In one moment, you may be standing in Shibuya Crossing (one of the world's wildest intersections), and the next, you may be dining in a quiet, old-school, four-stooltop restaurant down a slim and ancient alley. In the next moment, you may find yourself appreciating one of the many Buddhist shrines scattered throughout the city before turning the corner and entering into a sensory overload of neon lights and brightly-colored business signs. Where else but Tokyo?

2. Delhi, India - 32,065,760

Delhi, India

Delhi, in Northcentral India , is the National Capital Territory and the country's largest city (by population). This urban agglomeration is composed of two main parts: the historic city of Old Delhi (in the North) and the capital city of New Delhi (in the South). With that said, Delhi reveals its many additional layers, built upon themselves over time, in the form of ancient monuments, mosques, shrines, tombs, and other varieties of stimulating architecture. This giant community is situated along the Yamuna River (which feeds into the Ganges) and approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) South of the grand Himalayan Mountains . Aside from being the political anchor of India, Delhi is also a substantial commercial, transportation, and cultural hotspot.

3. Shanghai, China - 28,516,904

Shanghai china

Shanghai (上海), or Shàng-Hǎi, is the most populous city in the world's most populous country. This vital seaport is located in East-Central China , on the coast of the East China Sea, on the South shore of the Yangtze River . Shanghai was one of the first areas to receive Western trade ships, which helped it grow into the commercial and industrial backbone of the nation that it is today. The picturesque metropolis skyline is immediately recognizable and perfectly blends a mix of the old and the new (in a similar fashion to the street-level culture of the city).

4. Dhaka, Bangladesh - 22,478,116

biggest catamaran world

The capital city of Bangladesh , Dhaka (or Dacca), is situated in the country's central region alongside the Buriganga River. Dhaka is part of the Dhaka Division and the Dhaka District. Like Mumbai, the population density of this city has it nearly bursting at the seams, and yet, the rapidly growing metropolitan shows no signs of slowing. This creates a fascinating, high-energy environment but also poor living conditions for many residents, heavy traffic for all, and an overall challenge of sustainability for the government. Dhaka is also supremely industrialized, which plays a key role in the skyrocketing population growth and the daily tidal wave of commuters.

5. São Paulo, Brazil - 22,429,800

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Shifting down to South America, São Paulo (or "Sampa" as it is also called), Brazil takes the crown as the largest city on the continent. This juggernaut is located in the Southeast, in the state of São Paulo, just inland from the port of Santos on the South Atlantic Ocean . São Paulo is also about 450 kilometers (280 miles) Southwest of the iconic city of Rio de Janeiro. Sampa emerged from its neighbor's shadow during the late 19th-century coffee boom. Nowadays, a sea of skyscrapers signals São Paulo's emergence as the major economic center of Latin America , which is responsible for its rocketing population growth.

6. Mexico City, Mexico - 22,085,140

Mexico City

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) is the capital city of Mexico , the most populous megacity in North America, and one of the oldest continuously-inhabited capital cities in the Western Hemisphere. Mexico City was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1521 (atop the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán), in the Valley of Mexico, in the South-Central part of the country. Sitting at an elevation of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet), this colorful, rambunctious (yet surprisingly peaceful in parts), artistic, and historical place will literally and figuratively take your breath away.

7. Cairo, Egypt - 21,750,020

Cairo , egypt

Cairo (Al-Qāhirah) is the capital city of Egypt and the largest metropolitan in Africa. Cairo is located in the Northeast of the country, along the shores of the famed Nile River, and just North of the Great Pyramids of Giza , which can be seen in the distance, contrasted against the infinite layers of modern infrastructure. Cairo readily celebrates its antiquity, displaying the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (EMC).

8. Beijing, China - 21,333,332

Beijing, China

Beijing (北京), Pei-ching, or Peking, is the capital city of the People's Republic of China. It is located in the Eastern part of the country, near the Bohai Wan and the mouth of the Yellow Sea. Beijing has been the cultural and administrative center of China for (nearly) eight centuries, despite some renaming over the years and a brief changing of the guard from 1928-1949. And even with that long history, which can be felt and seen in nearly every nook and cranny, Beijing is still one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. On top of such attractions as the Great Wall of China , the culinary experience is another big draw - everything from the universally delectable to Fear-Factor-worthy experimental dishes

9. Mumbai, India - 20,961,472

Mumbai, India

On India's West coast, Mumbai (formerly Bombay) sprawls along a peninsula on Bombay Island - stretching out into Bombay Harbour and the Arabian Sea . Mumbai is the capital city of the state of Maharashtra and is the major entertainment, financial, and commercial hub (namely, cotton textiles and information technology) of India. "The City of Dreams" is the second-largest metropolitan of the world's second most populated country, but because of the geographical constraints of being located on a peninsula, it is one of the most densely-populated cities in the world.

10. Osaka, Japan - 19,059,856

Osaka, Japan

In the South of Japan, on the island of Honshu, in the region of Kansai and the Osaka Prefecture, the bright and lively metropolitan of Osaka looms large. Between the vigorous economic engine that keeps businesses hustling all day and the tourist-drawing nightlife, Osaka knows how to burn the candle at both ends (especially on Karaoke night). Food is another celebrated asset of the city - not just sushi but all kinds of local cuisines. Osaka, formerly Naniwa, was Japan's first known capital city. It is still easy to see why this spot is a natural focal point of the country.

These incredibly dense metropolitans are a must-see for any adventurous extrovert. Let the beeping horns and endless chatter be your soundtrack, the umpteen-dimensional layers be your backdrop, and the infinite supply of strangers be your social refuge.
