1. serial numbers.

After 2009 Rolex decided to use a string of random numbers to create its serial numbers. You can check the authenticity of a Rolex by checking its serial number. Every Rolex has a serial number on it, and you can verify the authenticity of Rolex serial numbers through the manufacturer.

4.  Font Consistency

An authentic Rolex watch remains consistent in its crafting across the board. This means that the font type on all the text that appears on the watch should look the same. This flexibility is one of the major assets of the Yacht-Master II; its development was a considerable technological challenge. The programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.

Furthermore, once the watch’s countdown is launched, it can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a patented system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. A technical feat made possible by the brand’s in-house mastery of the entire watch design and manufacturing process, from the case to the movement.

2. A Distinctive Aesthetic 

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch. A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand.

Yeah even from the poor pictures that's immediately apparent to me. I'm wearing a submariner and one glance at my watch even though completely different model and it's plain obvious the fit and finish.

The refief on the bezel (not to speak of other things) is so cheaply done, that you wouldn't find one of those in a bubble gum vending machine. This is an emetic. You need a master cast and not a cast taken from a bezel which came out of a master cast. If all fakes would be of that horrible quality, then we wouldn't have much problems with such trash, and whoever buys garbage like that, does really deserve it. How to Spot a Fake Rolex, According to an Expert

Tip #1: Don’t buy a watch from the inside of a trench coat.

You’ve decided to buy a Rolex . Congrats! Rolex is the most popular watch brand in the world for a reason: The brand makes excellent watches, with many of its models ranking among the most iconic watches ever made. But because Rolex is so popular, it’s also the most faked watch brand in the world. And while the fake Rolexes of decades past were easy to spot — like when they were hanging from the liner of Times Square hustler’s trench coat — modern replicas are a bit more advanced.

So how can you prevent yourself from getting taken and buying a Rolex that isn’t what it seems? You’ve probably heard all of the obvious tips and tricks, like making sure the seconds hand sweeps instead of ticks (unless you’re buying an Oysterquartz ), but what are some more sophisticated techniques to ensure the Rolex you’re buying is the real deal? For advice, I turned to Mike Manjos. He’s the chief sales officer at The 1916 Company , one of the largest used watch retailers in the world, and has been buying and selling Rolexes since 1983.

“I remember when I started, $1,850 two-tone Datejusts were the hottest thing on the planet. It was like selling candy,” Manjos says.

Things have changed a lot since then, obviously, so here are Manjos’s tips on how you can protect yourself from buying a fake when it’s time to make your big Rolex investment.

If possible, see the watch in person

Obviously, if you’re buying a watch sight unseen on eBay or another online platform, you’re not going to be able to see it in person. But if you’re out shopping and a Rolex catches your eye, getting hands-on with the watch is pretty valuable when it comes to determining its authenticity — especially if you’re dealing with a modern Rolex.

“A two-year-old Submariner you can put in your hand and you’ll have a pretty good idea that it’s genuine because nobody can manufacture to the quality and the feel that Rolex can,” Manjos says. “There is something about having a Rolex in your hand and it’s pretty easy to figure that out.”

Pay extra attention to “neo-vintage” watches

Things get trickier when you’re looking at watches that were produced in the transition period between vintage Rolex and modern Rolex when the brand began using sapphire crystals and making other improvements from the late 1970s into the 1990s. These watches may seem fake compared to modern Rolexes, but they could still be genuine.

“Typically, where you run into issues is with what we tend to call neo-vintage,” Manjos says. “When you go back 25, 30 years, there were definitely different standards. There were different materials. And they do feel different. I mean, I had an experience where we brought in a 30-year-old watch and people were like, ‘Oh, it’s too light, that’s not a real Rolex.’

“I’m like, ‘No, this is what it was like in the early ’80s.’ The bracelets were definitely not solid links. They weren’t heavy. They didn’t quite have the same fit and finish they have today.”

Look for replaced parts

“The biggest trick is trying to figure out if everything on the watch is original, because oftentimes you’ll have a watch that is mostly original but may have had parts that were replaced, authentic or not, and that’s really where it gets a little bit more difficult and you need to have a little more of expertise,” Manjos says.

How can you check for replaced parts? As Majos says, make sure the colors match. Are the indices and the hands all the same color with an equal amount of fading? Does their lume show an equal amount of patina? Is the date wheel as faded as other aspects of the dial or is it bright white? Is the bezel faded? What about the dial?

“These things are 20, 30, 40 years old, they fade,” Manjos said. “But if you’ve got a nicely faded dial and the hands that look brand new and sharp white, there’s something off. I also look at the dot that’s on the bezel because oftentimes those get replaced down the road.”

And just because a Rolex has had parts replaced, that doesn’t make it fake per se. It used to be commonplace for Rolex to replace worn-out parts when performing a service, and that was also what most customers wanted. You just want to make sure that any parts that were replaced are disclosed in the sale because all-original Rolexes are generally more valuable.

“Typically, if someone bought in a watch in the ’70s or ’80s and 10 years later they brought it in for service, a lot of guys would change the dial or the hands or the bezel ,” Manjos says. “And it’s not that they were trying to do anything nefarious; it was just what was done. It was a tool watch. It’s like, ‘Hey, you can read this dial. These new hands are clearer. You can read ’em better.'”

Check the wear and tear

In addition to checking for replacement parts by evaluating the evenness of color and fading on your prospective Rolex, you also want to make sure the watch is worn evenly. Polished watches, which have had scratches on their cases and bracelets buffed away by a watchmaker, tend to hold less value than unpolished watches. Again, it comes back to modern customers preferring all-original watches.

“Again, I want to make sure that nothing looks newer than anything else on the watch,” Manjos says. “Does it all look like it’s scratched about the same, or does the bracelet look like it was never touched and the case is trashed?”

Buy the seller before buying the watch

The most important tip Manjos shared, and this is one you may have heard before, is to buy the seller before you buy the watch. In other words, dealing with someone you know to be reputable is the best way to protect yourself from getting scammed. Recently, this became easier than ever to do thanks to Rolex’s new Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program , of which The 1916 Company is a part .

The new program sees the authenticity of used Rolexes certified by the brand itself and includes a two-year guarantee, giving you no doubt that you’re purchasing the genuine article. But even if you’re not going the Rolex CPO route, you can still take some steps to protect yourself.

“The word is always caution, but also obviously deal with somebody who’s reputable,” Manjos says. “If someone’s been in business for 50 years in the same spot and they’ll guarantee the watch in writing, if you’re getting a serial number on the receipt… I mean, all these little things make a big difference in giving me the confidence to say, yes, there are still times you will find an equivalent to a barn find in a small market somewhere that might not be a hundred percent vetted.

“But you have to really get the feel for the seller; that is the most important thing.”

The vast majority of fake Rolex watches in the world are cheap, easy-to-spot knockoffs. “You know that if it cost $50, it’s not a real Rolex. It’s a very obvious fake,” says Matthew Bain, a Miami-based watch expert who operates Matthew Bain, Inc .

But some counterfeits are not so obvious. Just last year a group of imitation ceramic Rolex Submariners snuck into the market. “If you didn’t look at one next to the real one, and you just looked at it alone, you probably would not be able to tell it was fake,” Bain says. “A lot of people got burned.”

As counterfeiting technology and methods advance, understanding the intricacies of genuine Rolex watches becomes increasingly important for prospective buyers . Fake watches are a billion-dollar industry, with an estimated 30 million to 40 million introduced to the market each year, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry .

Sometimes counterfeiters mix and match parts from genuine Rolex watches and fake ones, making distinguishing the two even more difficult. “They might get a real Rolex movement, and then they make a fake case around it. It’s very hard to detect the originality of it,” Bain explains.

Only an expert — and luckily, 1stDibs has many — can really be trusted to determine whether or not a watch is genuine. Nevertheless, we’ve compiled a list of 13 things you should look for in a real Rolex.

1. Engraved Model and Serial Numbers

Genuine Rolex watches have their serial and model numbers deeply engraved into the metal between the lugs attaching the band to the body — whereas fakes often just have them etched on with acid. The watch’s serial number, which can be used to determine its production date, is located on the six o’clock side.

On the 12 o’clock side is the model number (also called the style or reference number), typically appearing below the text “ORIG ROLEX DESIGN.” To view the model and serial numbers, you have to take off the band , using a pushpin or small paper clip to remove the pin that holds it in place.

Counterfeiters often don’t bother to vary the numbers, instead printing the same digits on each replica. A simple Google search for the serial and model numbers of the watch you’re considering should reveal whether it is actually a mass-produced fake . “Many times they will etch the wrong model number on a watch. For example, a Submariner model number for a Yacht-Master ,” says Abe Diveroli, of Primetime305 .

Rolex has lately improved its numbering methodology. “The newer Rolexes have scrambled serials,” says Diveroli . “You could no longer date them without going to a Rolex dealer. Also, the serial numbers are now etched in the silver bezel under the crystal at the six o’clock.”

They also have “Rolex” engraved on them, although the placement of the engraving differs depending on the piece. Rolexes manufactured before 2007 included a hologram of the crown logo on the caseback. Because counterfeiters became so adept at copying it, Rolex discontinued the hologram. However, you can now be sure that any seller claiming that a watch with a hologram was made after 2007 is almost definitely peddling a replica.

2. Self-Winding or Mechanical Movement

Rolex movements are self-winding and mechanical, as opposed to quartz or battery-powered. This is a bit tricky to check, since Rolex is adamant that only brand-certified watchmakers can access the movement.

One caveat: Oysterquartz Rolexes from the 1960s and 1970s were produced with quartz movements.

3. Clear and Even Text

The dial of a Rolex is a prime spot for finding inconsistencies that might indicate a fake. This is where most of the writing is located, and the appearance of the text can be a dead giveaway of a counterfeit.

From the Air King to the Yachtmaster, Rolex watches have a consistent font style that’s unique to the brand. Variations in the style are a good indication that the watch is fake. The font size may vary slightly, since it depends on the dial’s diameter, which can be as small as 24mm on women’s Rolexes and as large as 44mm on men’s models . The Cyclops on an authentic Rolex is convex — you can feel a bump when you run your finger over it — and it’s centered over the date. If either of these criteria is not met, the piece may be of dubious authenticity. But another caveat: Some Rolex wearers prefer their watch without the Cyclops and remove it, so a previously owned piece without one may have simply been modified.

5. Waterproof , Not Just Water Resistant

This one is pretty self-explanatory. “Waterproof” and “water resistant” both refer to an ability to keep moisture out of the case, with the former denoting higher performance underwater. The majority of Rolex watches in the Oyster line should hold up at a whopping depth of 100 meters (328 feet).

If a watch stops working while you’re out for a swim, best to just leave that fake at the bottom of the sea.

6. High-Quality Materials and Heavy Weight

As one of the most coveted luxury watch brands in the world, Rolex uses only the most durable and high-quality materials . Any authentic Rolex feels substantial and solid, whether it’s made from the heavy-duty Oystersteel or the lighter-weight RLX Titanium or platinum. 8. Crown Etching at 6 O’clock

The Yacht-Master, for instance, has a much thicker minute hand than most models, while a Daytona ’s hands are a bit longer, reaching all the way to the hash marks, and are rounded at the end . The Day-Date has shorter hands with flat tips. Counterfeiters often use whatever parts are available to save money, hoping the buyers will overlook this detail.

Can You Hear a Rolex Tick?

Generally, no, you can’t hear a Rolex tick. That is because they are powered with fully mechanical movements, as opposed to the quartz battery used by less expensive watchmakers, which causes a distinctive “tick, tick, tick” sound every second. That said, some Rolex models do tick every few seconds, so it’s the loud ticking every second that indicates a fake.

10. Crown in One Piece

The crown — the small winding knob on the side of the watch used to set the time and date — will always have the famed Rolex crown logo, known as the coronet, engraved on the end. The Rolex crown logo itself is very detailed, finely crafted and well-proportioned, with five symmetrical points of the crown — no more and no less.

On an authentic Rolex, the winding crown and its stem are made from a single piece of metal. On many Rolex replicas, the crown is made of two pieces. Examine it closely with a magnifying glass for signs that it’s been glued together.

Today, almost all Rolex dive watches have the Triplock crown, but older models still in production, including the Submariner 14060M , still use the Twinlock technology. It’s important to check the manufacture date of a particular model to determine which crown technology was used.

A Rolex’s date should change sharply at midnight. Don’t panic if your watch is a few minutes off — that’s likely just a sign that the watch needs some maintenance.

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. • 70% of Brits can't tell the difference between a real and fake Rolex, according to a new survey by jeweller William May.
• The jeweller shared the six things to look out for when spotting a genuine timepiece.

Rolex watches make for a pretty good investment, as both vintage and pre-owned watches continue to rise in value.

In October 2017, Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona sold for a record-breaking $17.8 million (£13.6 million) at Phillips Auction House in New York, becoming the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction.

However, the majority of Brits surveyed by vintage jewellery specialists William May can't tell the difference between a fake Rolex and a genuine Swiss timepiece. This is a problem because Rolex is also one of the most counterfeited brands in the world.

William May asked 1,000 people in the UK to determine which watch was real out of two images below — one showing a fake model and one showing a real Rolex. Only 30% guessed correctly.

If you answered Image A, you are correct — and you're among the 30% of the British population who can spot the difference.

For those of us who struggled to identify which one was genuine, William May says there are six things you should look out for in the future:

1. The magnification

The fine workings of a Rolex mean that the date has to be small for everything to work perfectly, according to William May. To compensate for this, a cyclops window, or magnifier, is added to make the date more visible.

"On all Rolex models the magnification is 2.5X and the date really jumps out at you," William May said. "On fakes this is often set to just 1.5X, so the date is harder to see."

2. The weight

If it feels light, it isn’t right.

"Fake Rolex watches are generally lighter, whereas a real Rolex is made of high-quality metals, and will weigh significantly more," William May said.

3. The water test

If the watch is dipped into water for a few seconds, it will not leak water into its dial, according to William May, who said that all Rolex watches are 100% watertight, while many counterfeit watches are not.

"Rolex Submariner timepieces are the only watches designed for deep sea diving, but all models are waterproof and perfectly sealed," according to the jeweller.

4. The writing

Everything on a Rolex is made to perfection, and if you take a magnifying glass and examine all the lettering on the dial, you'll be able to spot a fake if there are any imperfections.

According to William May: "The writing should be convex and there should be no bubbling."

5. The case back

If the case back is made out of glass, plastic, or crystal so you can see the inner workings of the watch, it’s most likely a fake, according to the jeweller.

"There are two extremely rare Rolex models from the 1930s that have case backs made of glass. And no more. If you are buying a relatively modern Rolex with a clear case back it is a fake. You can also check for engravings — Rolex does not engrave anything on the case back’s exterior, but it does on the interior."

6. The tick

If you hear a loud tick from the watch, you've got a fake on your hands.

"Counterfeiters can’t often perfect the precision gears of a Rolex and a ticking noise is the tell-tale sign of this."

He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.

1970s:  Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.

1992:  Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.

1994:  Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1996:  Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1997:  Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

2007:  Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

2019:  Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.

Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex Yacht-Master  models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.

Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

The Yacht-Master line is one of the most varied Rolex collections due mainly to the number of sizes made available. The smaller sizes, particularly the Lady Yacht-Master models, have been discontinued, but are still available in the pre-owned market.

The  Rolex Yacht-Master II  is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race.

Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS

The Yacht-Master II dial is unlike anything seen on other Rolex models because of its niche complication.

It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand.

Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion.

It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.

Earlier models were powered by the 4160, and later models were upgraded to the 4161. The latter is based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130, which features the same blue Parachrom hairspring for better switch resistance, and offer a 72-hour power reserve.

These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL

The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.

The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. Let's take a look at one of the latest and most spoken about Rolex Yachtmaster watches, the 116655. This watch is a special watch for many reasons. Namely, this is a historical landmark for Rolex since it is the first Rolex watch to ever use a rubber strap. Most people wouldn't bat an eye at the idea of a Rolex with a rubber strap so why the fuss? This is not any typical rubber strap. Rolex has been raving about this new rubber Oysterflex bracelet which is not only very comfortable to wear, it is also hypoallergenic.

The research and development team at Rolex has engineered a bracelet that is as easy to wear as a rubber bracelet but also holds its shape like a metal bracelet. They do this by using nickel-and-titanium inserts inside the band. They also instituted a patented shape on the inside of the bracelet which has a cushioning system built-in to it which allows the bracelet to take the natural shape of a wrist making the Oysterflex possible the most comfortable rubber watch band. An Oysterlock safety clasp keeps the watch from opening and looks stunning in 18ct Everose gold. This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is the self-winding caliber 4161 automatic movement beats at 28,800 vph and is completely manufactured by Rolex. This movement features the Rolex antimagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. After receiving a COSC certified chronometer certification, the movement the goes through a thorough in-house chronometric testing once installed into a watch case. Once the watch achieves a precision of -2/+2 seconds per day in the case, it gets a Rolex Superlative Chronometer designation. The first time that I went to China, right after leaving one of my friends told me:

“Don’t come back to Italy without checking out at least one of the fake markets in Beijing.”

Fake market? What did that mean?

I never heard of them, and didn’t know of the existence of this parallel world until one day, at the end of my lessons at the Beijing Language and Culture University , with one of my colleagues I headed toward one of the most famous fake markets in Beijing, the Silk Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie, in Chinese), in the Chaoyang district .

It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my first trip to China. After weeks of frustration in university, finally a little shopping and entertainment.

The Silk Street Market is an actual building of fakes, each floor with specific products, from shoes to clothing, to electronics and toys, to perfume to accessories for the home. A shopping mall from which it is impossible to leave without making at least one purchase among the thousands of articles offered.

Once inside, you’ll be fascinated and even a little perplexed since you’ll ask yourself how all this is possible. But right afterwards you too won’t be able to help but wander around in search of “bargains”.

In the Chinese fake market you can find everything, but here are a few rules to avoid coming home to find out you’ve been “ripped off”.

First rule: prices and the art of haggling

The first rule of these markets is: HAGGLE; the Chinese love to haggle, and once inside, you’ll find that all the linguistic difficulties you had just days before, magically disappear.

As an expert in the art of haggling, the merchants of various stores will try at the outset to offer prices that although seemingly reasonable to the eyes of a Westerner, can actually be bargained down since the first price is usually five to ten times more than the final one.

Here are some basic fundamentals for bargaining at fake markets:

• Smile, keep calm, and don’t feel guilty about wanting to haggle. Here, if you don’t haggle you’re considered an idiot;
• If you already know the type of product you want to buy, get an idea of the actual price on Taobao before going to the market, so that you’ll have a base price;
• As was already said, the initial price offered by the vendors in the fake markets are – usually, – five or ten times more than the “final” price. So if the initial price is 100 Yuan, you respond with 10. If the vendor tells you to take a hike (it can happen if you offer a price that too low even for them), try with another (there are usually many vendors selling the same product) and begin from 20. The vendor will offer 90, you 21, etc;
• Halfway through the transaction, pretend to walk away. If the vendor hasn’t yet reached their final price (or the price beyond which they’re not inclined to go so as not to take a loss) they’ll try to keep you from going;
• Bargain with other vendors to find out what is the lowest price they’re willing to go (as I already said, there are many stands that offer the same product);
• Tell them that they can’t cheat you because you live in China and know the prices;
• At the end of the day, if you’re a Westerner, in many cases you won’t get the best possible price since many merchants would rather lose a sale than have their final price become known to tourists. The only way to “resolve” this problem, if price is important to you, is to get your Chinese friend to go in your place. However this will make you miss out on all the fun!

Second rule: pay attention to the quality

Inside the market you’ll find differing qualities for every product; although they’re all imitations, often the first product that they’ll offer you will be of low quality and/or defective (such as a shirt with markings or holes).

Third rule: always pay using the local currency

Always pay using Chinese Yuan. Even though all types of currencies are accepted in this type of market, the prices offered in Yuan will always be better than in Euros or Dollars; so I recommend that you only use Yuan.

Another bit of advice is to avoid using credit cards since quite often, especially in the past, many have found that their card has been cloned.

Fourth rule: don’t follow vendors to an isolated place

At times vendors will say something like:

“I don’t have this in that color here (or this size, etc), follow me for a second and I’ll get it for you.”

Even though it is possible that the request is genuine, it is also possible that following the vendor into his store you’ll find yourself in front of two hooligans that will relieve you of your wallet.

China, in general, is not at all a dangerous place, but the rules of common sense still apply!

Where to find fake markets in Beijing?

Fake markets aren’t present in all of China, because being an exclusively tourist attraction they are concentrated especially in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

As far as Beijing goes, the most visited one with the widest variety of products is the Silk Street Market (秀水街, Xiushui Jie) located at 8 Xiushui East Street, in the Chaoyang district.

To get there, take Line 1 of the metro to the Yonganli stop and follow the signs for the Silk Market (exit A).

This is the third tourist attraction in Beijing and was opened at the beginning of the Eighties and today is host to more than a thousand vendors inside.

After the conversion of the Ya Show of San Li Tun to the fake market shopping center, the second most famous fake market in Beijing is probably the Pearl Market (红桥市场, Hongqiao Shichang), located at 46 Tiantan East Street.

To get there, take Line 5 of the metro to the Tiantan Dongmen stop and take exit B.

This market is visited by more than a million tourists a year. Unlike the other merchants, this one also specializes in the sale of pearls: pearl merchants are found on the third, fourth and fifth floor of the building.

Besides clothing, shoes, electronics, watches and silk, at this market you can also buy food, especially fish, from frutti di mare to the most valuable ones.

Where to find fake markets in Shanghai?

In Shanghai the situation is more or less the same: the same products, same quality, almost the same prices (in my opinion the prices are a little higher in Shanghai).

Just as in Beijing, a tourist in Shanghai should include on their list of attractions to see at least one of the large markets in Shanghai .

The first is the Pudong Market (浦东亚太新阳市场 , Pudong Yatai Xinyang), located at 2002 Shiji Dadao, in the Pudong Xin district.

To get there take Line 2 of the metro to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stop. The market is located inside the station itself.

If you want to go by taxi, the easiest thing to do is have the driver leave you in the square alongside the entrance of the metro, asking in fact to be dropped off at the Shanghai Science and Tecnology Museum station (in Chinese: 科技馆地铁站, Kejiguan Ditie Zhan).

The second market I’d recommend is the Fenshine Market (风向市场, Fengxiang Shichang) at 580 Nanjing West Road [ Update : At the moment this market is close], at the intersection with Chengdu Road. This market is more centrally located than the first and can be reached by foot in about fifteen minutes from the Nanjing West Road metro stop (line 2), or on foot for fifteen minutes from the stop at People’s Square, exit 11 (line 1, 2 and 8).

Here you might find vendors who will ask you to go to the “higher floors of the building”: don’t worry! That’s where you’ll find the best quality merchandise, the kind most appealing to we Westerners.

Regardless of which market you decide to visit depending on budget and availability, in my opinion this is one of the experiences you have to do at least once in your life: first of all you’ll have a good time, whether in the end you decide to buy a bag or just a magnet; after which you can also discover a different world, a different China that isn’t possible to find in any other place.

And trust me, once you enter, you surely won’t be disappointed.

You can buy electronics as well, but personally I prefer to do so in Hong Kong instead. There’s no import taxes and you can buy genuine products at a lower price.

Shirts can cost everything between 120 RMB – 500 RMB, from my experience. If you go to a decent tailor at Nan Pu Da Qiao in Shanghai, for example, you shouldn’t pay more than 200 RMB for a cotton shirt of normal quality.

Some other places you should check out are the Taihua market(泰华) and Xinzhongxin（新中心). Here, you’ll find much clothes, shoes, handbags, and more. It’s similar to the Silk market in Beijing.

Probably yes

I worked in Beijing some years ago – now back in Germany. During my time in Beijing I ckecked out all kind of fake markets.

Best expierence was to go to so called “Hidden fake markets”.

Those shops that are usually near to the big fake markets . They are not marked as shops from outside. Inside you can find a lot different fake stuff – normally with a lot better quality then the stuff from Silk Market or Pearl Market. Normally the prices are fix – you can not bargain. But the prices are realistic – no stupid fake prices like the prices from Silk Market or Pearl Market.

Where you can find the hidden shops is a secret. I found nothing about that in the internet but most of the Airline Crew Members know about these shops. Everytime I was in one of those shops I saw some Airline crew members shopping there too.

580 closed a couple years back and will never re-open. And 360 market up near the railway station (which was not mentioned above) also kicked the knock-off vendors out of its basement floor. Those from 580 and 360 moved into Science & Tech around 2017. 360 does still have quite a few vendors in its upper floors for electronics, eyeglasses, etc. So Science & Tech is basically the main source in Shanghai now. One last location…South Bund Fabric Market….quite a few tailors (it’s where I have my dress shirts and cashmere coats made) and no shortage of knock-off clothing.
