Used Selene Yachts For Sale

At the time of this writing, there are reportedly some 400 Selene yachts cruising in various parts of the world, with about 75 used vessels, from 36 to 92 feet LOA, listed for sale worldwide. Selene yachts are noteworthy for several reasons. 1) They employ full-displacement hull forms. 2) Most of them, particularly in the smaller sizes are fitted with a single propulsion engine and screw, indicating a priority consideration to long-range capabilities.  3) Selene yachts were developed, built, marketed, and sold by a Taiwan-based firm, jet Tern Marine — in contrast to being built on sub-contract by an Asian shipyard for a western marketing and sales firm.

Full-Displacement Hulls

Full-displacement hull forms are generally able to carry larger payloads (fuel, water, stores) for a given length LOA than either semi-displacement or planing hull forms, because of the greater underwater volume full-displacement hull forms have relative to their length. Thus, full-displacement hull forms tend to be favored among yachtsmen who seek to make long, open-water passages since they will be away from land-based logistical support during such passages. Full-displacement hull forms are also thought by some to be somewhat better sea-boats (more sea-kindly) — although there is plenty of expressed opinion that favors semi-displacement hulls in yachts under 50 meters long.

The drawback to a full-displacement hull form for a yacht is that it is supported primarily by buoyant forces and, therefore, moves through the water, instead of being pushed up onto the top of the water by hydrodynamic lifting forces, as happens with a planing hull. The result is that a full-displacement hull faces a steeply rising, almost vertical resistance curve as it approaches its “hull speed” —

  (Vkn = 1.34 x √LWLfeet).

All of which means that a yacht 40 feet on her loaded waterline can attain, as a practical matter, a maximum speed of about 9 knots. That kind of top speed is satisfactory to most yachtsmen for long offshore passages, but many want to be able to go faster than that alongshore and when island-hopping. So, it all comes down to whether you enjoy spending time at sea or whether being at sea is for you simply a means to and end, which is exploration of shoreside and inland sites.

Single-Screw Propulsion

A single propeller on centerline, driven by a single engine, is generally a more economical rig to operate, both in terms of initial and ongoing costs and in terms of fuel consumption per nautical mile traveled. That is why a high percentage of commercial vessels are powered in that manner.

In smaller yachts, given their limited capacity for carrying fuel, the increased efficiency of a single-screw set-up often makes the difference between being able to make usefully long passages on the yacht’s own bottom versus having to transport the yacht as deck cargo on a large ship, in order to cruise distant waters. And with the modern availability of emergency power from a genset via electro-hydraulic transmission to the single prop shaft, as well as the common use these days of bow and stern thrusters, many of the drawbacks of single-screw propulsion systems have been eliminated.

Jet Tern Marine, which manufactures the Selene line, was founded in 1998 in Taiwan, and at that time, set up a shipyard in Dongguan, China. The first Selene was delivered to a U.S. buyer in 1999. Later, in 2008, Jet Tern opened a second shipyard in Zhuhai, China, near Macau, 70 miles from Dongguan. The Zhuhai shipyard was quite modern and incorporated two workshops, A & B, approximately 150,000 square feet each, plus a 32,000 square foot warehouse.

Selene Yachts, also known as Jet-Tern Marine, is a world-class yacht manufacturing company known for their cutting-edge designs, quality, and superior marine engineering. Jet Tern Marine was established by Howard Chen in 1998, a seasoned boat designer and builder with a vision to create a brand that would fathom the international yacht market with its competence and sophistication. He was instrumental in setting up the shipyard in Zhuhai, China. A leading world brand of luxury passage-making trawlers, Selene Yachts are designed and built in the impressive Jet Tern Marine facility along the Pearl River delta in Zhuhai, China since 1998. Jet Tern Marine was founded by Howard Chen who studied architecture under the famous Taiwanese architect, Dr. Da-Hong Wang at Tunghai University in Taiwan.

Influenced by Dr Wang’s design and name of a commemorative monument of the Apollo 11 moon landing, he called his newly developed line of Yachts, Selene (Greek mythical moon goddess). The first Selene Yacht was delivered to the US Pacific Northwest in 1999. Today there are over 400 Selenes cruising throughout the world and are highly respected for their seaworthiness, safety, and comfort.

Initially, the Jet Tern Marine/Selene shipyard was located in Dongguan, China, an area known for its high-end furniture industry, providing local sourcing for the yachts’ luxurious interiors. Highest quality materials such as woods, veneers, fabrics, granite, and glass along with skilled craftsmen were readily available and a local climate ideal for fiberglass lamination production. An in-house stainless-steel workshop was added in 2006 to fabricate equipment utilizing premium polished 316 steel, reducing production costs and for higher quality control.

Another Selene Yachts shipyard was opened in 2008, in Zhuhai on the water, near Macau. The new facility included two 150,000 sq ft work buildings equipped with a total of four 100-ton cranes, and a 32,000 sq ft warehouse making it the largest single production facility in Asia, able to accommodate 36 sets of molds for boats in production. Larger vessels were built in Zhuhai and smaller yachts in Dongguan, and together built nearly 400 yachts ranging from 38ft to 103ft in length, over a 20-year period. In 2017, the company decided to consolidate all operations to the Zhuhai shipyard, as it was a superior facility and located on the water for easier testing of new builds.

As of 2018, all Selene Yachts are built in Zhuhai. The Jet Tern Marine Zhuhai shipyard is one of the best equipped and largest facilities building FRP (fiberglass) yachts in the world, with the capacity to build nearly 100 yachts a year. Even with a high production volume, Selene Yachts remain semi-custom, hand-crafted, solid vessels, produced efficiently and priced advantageously. Selene Yachts are designed and built from start to finish in the Zhuhai factory, a “vertical” operation, and do not subcontract work to third-party facilities or so-called partner shipyards. Another Selene Yachts advantage is the 20+ year experience designing and building true ocean-going passagemaker trawlers versus recreational trawlers.

Selenes are built with stronger fuel-efficient, deep full-displacement hulls, watertight bulkheads and doors, full skeg-protected propeller and rudder, backup bilge pumps, large scuppers, continuous duty engines, and automatic engine room fire extinguisher systems, Portuguese bridge and high bulwarks, forward raked pilothouse windows for greater visibility, large storage spaces for spare parts and provisioning, escape hatches in critical locations, solid hull lamination below the waterline (no foam or core), covered aft deck, cockpit and side decks, and beautiful teak or cherrywood cabinetry—just some of the features that differentiate Selene Yachts trawlers and instill confidence in sailors to power across any ocean or sea in safety and comfort.

Understanding the dual roles of captain and engineer often required of the long-range cruising trawler owner, the Selene Yachts engine rooms have been designed to provide good access, headroom, and plenty of space around mechanical and other systems for ease of maintenance and service. First-quality brands are installed for electrical components such as batteries, generators, inverters, chargers, light fixtures and more. As a semi-custom builder, the Selene Yachts engineering team stands ready to assist owners with their yacht’s electrical system and level of redundancy required for their cruising plans, in fact, owner and designer Howard Chen, Naval Architect, personally remains involved with every new project and along with his staff, is attentive to the owner throughout the build.

Today owners can opt for a classic exterior and interior design or a new, more modern exterior and interior, (or a combination of modern and classic) designed by world-renowned Dutch superyacht designer, Guido de Groot, of the award-winning studio, Guido de Groot Design B.V. located in Leiden, Holland. De Groot specializes in high-quality, innovative designs appreciated for their purity and harmony in both power and sailing luxury superyachts. Selene Yachts offers owners the choice of either Classic or de Groot lines for the same length vessel.

In 2017 a strategic consortium was developed by Jet Tern Marine, builder of Selene Yachts, and Kingship Marine, builder of aluminum custom yachts in Southern China, to form SCSA—Southern China Superyachts Alliance. Kingship will be building aluminum hulls, decks, and superstructures, while Jet Tern will be doing interior work—fit and finish; joinery, varnishing, decorating, furnishing, electrical, mechanical systems, and electronics commissioning. Jet Tern Marine models, like the Selene 128 to the 168 Ocean Explorer, are designed for fiberglass or aluminum construction, depending on the owner’s requirements. SCSA is able to take on custom superyacht projects for world-class designers like Guido de Groot, Bill Dixon, or Ivan Erdevicki. SCSA, with two major shipyards and the Selene Design Studio (SDS) is a strong contender in China’s growing superyacht industry.

Selene Yachts have come a long way in a relatively short 20-year timespan, since the first trawler was shipped in 1999! Three new lines have been added, combining the design talents of Howard Chen’s SDS (Selene Design Studio) with the world-renowned Guido de Groot superyacht design studio, expanding beyond the classic passage-making trawler market. The following is a brief overview of Selene Yachts current lines available in the US market:

Selene Classic Explorers (45, 49, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 66,72) – combine old world craftsmanship with new world technology. Capable of 3,000 NM range and 10 knot cruise speed. Ideal for Great Loop, ocean passage, islands, and coastal cruising.

Selene Voyager (38 Aft Cabin, 42 Aft Cabin, 42 Sedan, 50 Sedan) – newer design based on original Selene Archer hull. Exceptional design combined with masterful customized craftsmanship.

Selene Ocean Explorer (60, 72, 78, 92, 128) – expedition type boats that can still be operated by a small crew. Can be customized for owners or designed for charter use.

Selene Yachts Bi-Hull Ocean Explorer (70) – speedy new bi-hull passagemaker for exploring shallower island waters and lagoons.

Selene Ocean Clipper (59) – New de Groot designed semi-displacement hull for faster cruising without losing bluewater capability. Twin engines push 19-knot speed.

With over 400 Selene Passagemaker Trawlers built and cruising around the world, there are currently only 5 models listed in the yacht brokerage MLS that are available in the USA. Pricing ranges from about $325,000 for a 2004 Selene 36 to about $1,195,000 for a 2006 Selene 62 Pilothouse model. They do tend to hold their value.

High Spirit has not been left tied up at the dock like so many boats, but rather she has been busy cruising up and down the U. S. East coast. From Halifax, Nova Scotia down to the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic, she is a well-traveled trawler.

High Spirit is well equipped with numerous systems to take you to your destination in comfort and safety. Improvements in the last two years include a hull paint job, new upholstery, new galley refrigerator/freezer, new laundry appliances, a new water maker and more! Redundant electronics assist with navigating.  Bow and stern thrusters as well as active fin stabilizers help with handling and provide a more comfortable ride. A close review of her equipment selections will show you she has been outfitted for long ranging adventures. A full-time captain is aboard to look after and care for her, keeping her fresh, active and raring to go. She is even equipped with a wing/get home engine, not a common option on a Selene . DESCRIPTION:

Cockpit: You can board High Spirit from fore or aft entry doors on port and starboard or via the swim deck and transom door. The cockpit is huge and covered overhead. You will notice natural teak decking that extends to the side decks on both sides of the saloon. On a hot afternoon you can enjoy a cold beverage sitting in a comfortable settee with your glass perched on the beautifully finished teak table. The cockpit is surrounded by a gorgeous teak cap rail that adds to her beauty. Forward on the port side is a storage cabinet with a large countertop.

Galley:   As you move forward from the saloon you enter a large U-shaped galley on the port side. The galley has plenty of counter space, with a large granite bar/breakfast counter on top and a Corian counter below. There are plenty of storage lockers and drawers throughout. The galley is equipped with the necessary appliances. The original refrigerator/freezer has been replaced with new stainless steel Vitrifrigo refrigerator. On the starboard side a stairway leads down to the owner stateroom and to the main access door of the engine room.  Or, you can go up a few steps to the pilothouse.

The reverse raked windows and the Portuguese bridge in front give Selene trawlers that old time salty look they are famous for. Aft is a large L-shaped settee and a custom teak table. A pilot berth is up and behind the settee. At the helm you have a comfortable Stidd chair with all electronics and engine controls easily accessible and visible right in front of you. You have easy access to the side decks and the Portuguese bridge through the watertight Dutch doors on either side. A companion way leads up to the flybridge and a stairway on the starboard side leads down to the cabins.

This cabin also has lots of light and ventilation thanks to four opening port lights and an opening hatch overhead. Just outside the entry door on the starboard side is the head which is also shared with the second guest cabin. The head is spacious with a standup shower stall and a freshwater Tecma toilet.

The port side has a built in dresser with a large counter on top and two extra-large port lights providing light and ventilation. The head is on the starboard side, with granite tile floors, a spacious standup shower stall and a freshwater Tecma toilet. On the starboard side and aft you have a private stairway going up to the saloon and the main access door to the engine room.

The Cummins main engine and the Yanmar wing engine are easily serviceable from all sides. Northern Lights generator is aft inside of a sound enclosure. Dedicated Dual Racor fuel filters provide clean fuel to the main engine, wing engine and the generator. For an additional level of fuel filtration High Spirit is equipped with the ESI fuel polishing system. All of the start batteries and the tool chest are accessible on the port side. Going aft you can enter the lazarette through a small watertight door.

There is lots of storage space including a small work area with a vise.

Boat Deck: The boat deck aft has the RIB dinghy on the starboard side and an Aritex hydraulic davit used to deploy it. On the port side and forward are two large storage boxes. Upon deploying the dinghy, the boat deck on High Spirit opens up to a large space that can be used for entertaining guests or just enjoying the outside.

Selene trawlers are built in China by Jet-Tern Marine, an experienced manufacturer with modern, state-of-the-art facilities located just north of Hong Kong. The first Selene model, the Selene 43, arrived in the U.S. in 1999. She was soon followed by the Selene 47, and by 2003 Jet-Tern was producing a full line of Selene trawlers for dealers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Selene Trawlers are widely admired for their traditional full-displacement design, modern engineering, and quality construction. Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."
