One Metre Class Boats

Since the IOM design was introduced in the late 1980s dozens of designs have been tried and tested throughout large and highly competitive fleets in Europe and Australasia. It's only recently that one or two designs have begun to dominate, although single design variety has really dominated.

The answer  lies in the quasi tolerant nature of the box rule and the relentless pace of development within tight class rule parameters.

Many boats designed between 2000 and 2010 are still very competitive at club level today. Some, like the Italko favour A rig conditions whereas a Lintel seems at its best with B or C rig.

Widgets, Topiko and Obsession are also handy boats as is the more recent Fraktal and Alternative which are all capable of a good turn of speed, have excellent pedigree and capable of challenging Britpops, Kantuns and V9s on a good day.

Boxkite.jpg

The IOM GBR is working over the next two years to catalogue European and Australasian designs such as MMX, Sedici, TNT, Atlas, Corbie to create a useful archive.

Two significant additional developments are running in parallel with the challenging catalogue task.

Devoting a webpage for building self made wooden or composite boats from plans, including comprehensive data on IOM designs and their key capabilities.

Developing a buyers guide advice for skippers who wish to enter the IOM world to experience the joy of sailing one of these rewarding boats.

1/8/22 Blue Green Algae outbreak at Apex Lakes – we have just been informed of a possible return of Blue-Green Algae in the Apex Lakes and have been asked to implement our Blue-Green Algae Outbreak Policy with immediate effect (1st August 2022). This means until further notice any boats that produce spray, or amphibious type models are PROHIBITTED to use the Apex Lake. For club members please check your email for more details plus a copy of the policy.

For all others please be aware of the algae and follow a few simple steps below both for your own and the public’s safety when boating at Apex;

  • Wash and thoroughly dry all models and any other items that have been in contact with the water. Items should not be stored wet or damp.
  • If attending a club meeting use the hand wash dispensers provided whenever you remove a boat from the lake.
  • Do not launching or recover your model from any areas that have thick aggregations of algae or scum.
  • Do not use the park benches as a boat stand when you remove your boat from the water.
  • If your boat collects any excess water drain it off back into lake upon removal.

It’s open to any scale or sail boat but not any Fast Electric or speed boats please. Right now, this meeting is ON – but we would recommend members check their email, this page, club Facebook page closer to the time as things can change for obvious reasons. Also, to avoid close gatherings we will not be running our mobile kitchen supplying hot drinks this time I’m afraid.

16/12/21 Winter Calendar amendment – the calendar has had to be changed so the meetings listed for 13th, 20th and 27th March have been removed.

See For Sale page for more info and photos.

10/11/21 Dragonflite 95 racing for 2022? our club is considering introducing a Dragonflite 95 yacht racing class for 2022. Approx. 10 meetings would be held on Sunday mornings 9.30am to 12.00pm from April to November. The racing itself would be much the same as our IOM section as all on-the-water racing rules will be applied. It will not be the same as our SYS (DF65 restricted) section which is run to our own very “relaxed” sailing rules! All boats would have to comply with the DF95 restricted class rules. These are comprehensive and restrict any performance related modifications or repairs which also keeps a cap on the cost and make the boats equal as it is a one design class. For more information on the class rules see; https://dfracinguk.com/df95-rules

If this sounds like something you would be interested in please contact the Club’s Secretary Russ Chicott

28/10/21 “Irregular” session Weds 12noon to 2pm – a reminder we continue to run Wednesday afternoons meetings 12pm to 2pm but unlike those on the calendar these are arranged ad hoc depending on the weather forecast – hence the name “Irregulars”. These are mainly for Dragonforce 65 yachts and we often get 8 or more sailing, but anyone with any boat is welcome along – we have a big enough lake! The clubs rescue boat will be available if required. If you are a club member and would like to attend please email the club Secretary; [email protected] and ask to add your name to the “Irregulars email list”. Russ sends out an email every Sunday evening to confirm if the meeting is on or not. If the forecast is for no wind and/or rain we don’t bother that week! Please note; these meetings are held 3pm to 5pm from April until September.

27/10/21 Winter Calendar is out now! – club meeting dates running from November 2021 to the end of March 2022 has now been published. See Winter Calendar 2021 page.

7/8/21 Free Sail & Scale meeting 8th Aug – a reminder this popular event is on tomorrow mornings 9.30am to 12pm and is open to any scale and/or yachts of any type or size but not for speed and/or Fast Electric race boats. A good chance for like-minded club members to enjoy a relaxing morning floating their boats and having a chat!

1/8/21 Well done to Nigel Clarke on winning the IOM Les Watts Shield event. After a slow start by his standards Nigel found his racing grove after the coffee break and went on to win this annual one-off IOM trophy event. See the One Metre Yachts page for a full report and score sheet. 20/7/21 (update for below) – the IOM meeting Weds 21st July is ON . The Fire brigade will be over the other side of the park at the far lakes. 20/7/21  Notice to all IOM Skippers planning to attend tomorrow night (Weds 21st July) – there is a chance the meeting may have to be cancelled. The Council are taking action to oxygenate the water at Apex as the fish are showing signs of distress. They have called on the local fire brigade who will be parked on the ramp using their largest pump and hose to create a massive fountain into the lake. They are doing this tonight (Tues 20th) and possibly again tomorrow night also, but right now this is not known for certain. Members who have IOM boats will be informed directly via email/text as soon as the club is informed.

20/7/21 Congratulations to Nigel Clarke who has won the 2021 IOM Spring Series. Nigel won it by the very narrowest of margins beating his nearest rival Richard Aucott on countback in the very last round of the series held last Sunday. This meant he won the series ahead of Richard again only on countback!

4/7/21 FE round on Weds 7th July CANCELED – the FE Drivers have voted to cancel the round due to take place on the evening of Weds 7th July as it clashes with England’s Euro semi-final match. The round will take place on the reserve date Weds 1st Sept instead.

This is normally well supported by our club, if your free and can spare a few hours it would be very much appreciated. 3/6/21 Competition series results – Wednesday night and Sunday morning series score sheets and reports will be added whenever possible 48 hours after each event.  23/5/21 IOM Alice Trophy & Spring Series Rd1 – report, scores and a few photos have been added. Achieve Your Potential in Competition IOM Sailing

Vickers RC Sailing

75472874_10157751310012277_7807677101569

Producer of the V11 Competition International One Metre Design by Ian Vickers.

Our workshop opened in 2014 with the V8 IOM. Since then we have produced hundreds of hand crafted IOM yachts in the Vickers design range. Yachts that have helped IOM competitors around the world achieve their potential and exceed expectations in competition.

We are currently offering the V11, the innovative design that finished 3rd at the 2019 World Championships in Port Alegre, Brazil.

When our clients return, they know they are tapping in to smart, competitive technology in IOM design and build. Stiff, Lightweight boats, that are Easily Assembled, Fast and Forgiving to sail. Join the fun!

Improve your results at the club and the regatta, with the fast and forgiving V11 from Vickers RC Sailing

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.

We are ready to help.

IMG_6638.jpg

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.

IMG_6611.jpg

Vickers Rc Sailing is back taking orders again for the V11

We look forward to hearing from you

Thanks for submitting!

Milling mdf, more plug milling.

The model yacht plug we're making is milled in three stages. First a rough-cut, then a finish-cut which cuts the plug 1 mm undersize. Then it's coated with a thick layer of tooling gelcoat. What you see above is the final milling pass where the gelcoat is cut down to the final shape. This way we're hoping the final plug will require a minimum of painting/sanding before use.

Jari is making plugs for our latest IOM-project, and he posted two new videos:

Wave goodbye, wish me well

FIN-43, my current Noux-design IOM, is packed and ready for shipping to its new owner next week. I made a holder for the bulb from tube-clamps, and disassmbled the rigs today. Everything fits nicely into my 110x30x26 cm boat box.

IOM Sail Camera

Jari got a Hero camera which takes still pictures and video and stores them on a memory card. It weighs about 120g and it's watertight, so it's possible to put it on-board and take some pictures while sailing. Seems to work quite well. This could be used later for looking at how the mast bends in different winds and with different shroud and/or spreader positions. ( See here for some statistics from the ongoing IOM Euros).

IOM fin and rudder moulds

With the servo-upgrade of the cnc-mill complete we are now beginning to run the kind of jobs that weren't previously possible. Stepper motors simply don't give the kind of 3D contouring capability and reliability for running 3-4 hour finish jobs like these. The finmould is finished with a 6 mm ball-nose cutter.

Jari made these moulds in steel, but it's possible to cut them in aluminium too. The fin mould here has a NACA 0010 section and the rudder has a thicker NACA 0015 section. With the precision that cnc-cutting provides we hope that the fin can come out of the mould quite complete and fit a cnc-cut finbox/bulb without much manual fitting.

We can produce fin, rudder, and bulb moulds in steel or aluminium on a small scale. Get in touch by email or by commenting below if you are an interested IOM-builder.

Steel Bulb nr2

After the test run on Saturday Jari made a complete bulb in steel on Sunday. The first half can be milled with the stock clamped to the vises, but for the second half we need this jig. It's in aluminium and was fairly simple to make - which also means making a bulb mould in aluminium should be easy. If someone is interested in a bulb mould, do drop me an email.

Milling the second half proceeds exactly like the first half. Here the rough-program is run leaving about 1 mm minimum of material for the finish pass. We now adjusted the program for a bit faster feedrate and much faster plunge-rates as it is clear the program is error free and all plunges are outside the stock.

Surface finish is slightly better than on the trial bulb. The design weight was 2410 g and this one came out at 2416 g - pretty good. With a 100-150 g fin trimming the total weight close to 2500 g shouldn't be a problem.

Widgets for Sail

Graham Elliot from the UK doesn't have a website of his own (yet?) , but wanted to let everyone know that he is now building and selling the Widget IOM . Designed by Chris Dicks in 1995 the boat has gone through quite a few changes to everything except the hull shape. The Widget has won the 1996 European Championship, the British National championships in 1997 and 2007, and the 2007 World Championship, not bad for a boat that was designed 13 years ago. The mouldings of the boat are manufactured by Dave Creed.

Graham's options and prices are:

  • Boat complete to deck level, including cf fin and rudder, all attachment points, pulleys, adjustable main post, keel, all finished = 840 euro.
  • RMG 280D, 42mm drum, thumbscrew, fitted in boat=215 euro.
  • Rudder Servo, hitec 645 ultra torque, fitted in boat=75 euro.
  • Rigs: prices vary depending on which fittings (sails etc or housemartin) and also which sails are preferred (housemartin , Brad Gibson , Stealth , sails etc)
  • Wooden rig box= 80 euro
  • 4 colours: red, orange, blue, grey. They are all sprayed using Epifanes 2 pot polyurethane paint.

Currently (Feb 2008) there is a waiting list of approximately 16-18 weeks.

Please contact Graham Elliot on elliottyachts "at" hotmail.co.uk if you are interested!

Wireless Mast Camera

Jari got a small wireless camera operating on 2.4 GHz and mounted it at the top of the mast on his no2 rig. With the bulky power connector removed and a longer wire for the 9V battery which is under the deck the camera weighs about 20g. Now we used a preliminary aluminium angle to hold the camera, but a better carbon arm should be made for next summer.

This camera is the variant where you can plug the receiver straight into a laptop via the USB port. The receiver even gets its power via USB, so no extra power supplies needed in the field. Range seemed good, and image quality was OK - probably now limited more by the compression used in the PC than by the camera.

A welcome from the IOM ICA Executive Committee

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition  has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a  global camaraderie  that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.

We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm   and  inclusivity  are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.

As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of  enthusiasm .  Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries,  surviving the test of time!  No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end.  We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an  open  and  democratic  fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global  IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you  participate ,  experiment , and continue to  explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story  together .

Model Boat Builders Plans: One Metre Class Yacht Plans

The International One Metre boats are light, responsive and fun to sail. The class rule is ‘closed’ and many aspects of design, materials and construction are restricted in an attempt to promote close competition. However the rule is designed to allow the DIY enthusiast some freedom to construct an inexpensive and competitive boat. The important speed related criteria of length, draught, displacement and sail plan are limited to a maximum of 1000mm, 420mm, 4kg and 3 prescribed rigs. Please Note: These plans are printed to order and take approximately 7 days for us to obtain.

Typhoon Rookie 2.0 B/E Youth

The International One Metre (IOM) class is a 1m long hull with 1.7m mast height and a minimum weight of 4kg. The class rules are very tight and limit yachts to 2-function control and 3 one-design rigs. Hull, ballast, draught and construction materials are also limited. There is sufficient freedom to allow different hull and fin/rudder shapes to be developed.

Building an IOM rig.

The starting point for a really good rig is ensuring that you set up the mast to match the sails as far as possible. To halp you achieve this, there are some general guidelines on this page. Most boat builders supply a rigging guide with their hulls, and it is worth getting your hands on the guide for your particular boat. Prior to commencing the rig building process, make sure you have a plan to follow.

PREBEND tHE MAST

Why put pre-bend into an IOM mast? The purpose of using pre-bend is to increase the amount of forestay pressure that can be generated. Without pre-bend, the end result will be a forestay which sags.

The amount of pre-bend and the distance over which it is placed, depends on the luff curve of the mainsail. It is not dependant on the design of boat – often one hears skippers talking about the amount of pre-bend for a particular hull design, but this is not the defining factor. When ordering sails, you should ask you sailmaker how much pre-bend they recommend for the luff curve of their mainsails. The final outcome that is required is a mast curve which matches the sail’s luff curve, with good forestay pressure.

To achieve this, the following factors all need to be right:

The type of mast – diameter, style (groovy or round) and material

The amount of pre-bend

The distance over which the pre-bend curve is bent

The height of the shrouds

The backstay crane length

Some typical examples can be found in the rigging guides for the various hull designs – although these assume you are using sails from the hull builder. Most recommend using 11.1mm high tensile aluminium masts.

Most new masts will not be perfectly straight. Find the existing curve in the mast and use that to assist you to achieve your desired pre-bend. Pre-bend around a curve of 700mm radius works pretty well. You will need to go slowly at first, as some masts bend easily, and only require one or two bends around the jig, whereas others may take quite a few.

The top 200mm of the mast does not bend uniformly, so it is worth chopping that amount off after the bending is complete.

It is wise to pre-bend the mast prior to drilling any holes.

Make sure that the mast remains in exactly the same orientation each time you bend it around the curve, otherwise the result will look really wobbly!

DRILLING HOLES

If you can get your hands on one of these drilling blocks, they are worth their weight in gold! The block on the end of the mast holds the mast in the same orientation all the time and allows for the mast to be rotated through 90 degrees or 180 degrees. The drilling block ensures that the hole will finish up in the centre of the mast every time!

Follow your rigging plan to place the holes in the position you want. for the shrouds, consider drilling just a single hole in the front of the mast, rather than two holes either side. As a general guide, shroud height higher up the mast will provide better sideways control of the mast, but allow for less forestay tension. Conversely, lower shroud positions will allow you to generate better forestay tension at the expense of sideways bend.

Run your shrouds through the hole, and pull them out the top of the mast. Run both shrouds through a plastic ball, and crimp them off. Once that's done, pull the shrouds back down, so that the plastic ball sits up against the front edge of the mast. This will spread the load of the shrouds over a larger area.

widget iom model yacht

The mast plug can be adjusted so the small metal arm which the top of the sail is tied to, rotates really easily. Tap a thread into the bottom of the mast plug’s smaller hole, and screw a small screw with a flattened end into the hole. Sharpen the bottom of the wire arm which swivels, so that it is a point. When the wire arm rests on the screw, it will rotate easily. The method is shown in the Obsession rigging guide from Craig Smith.

The mast crane should be long enough so that the backstay only just clears the leech of the sail. If the crane is too long, it will put too much mast bend into the top of the mast when you pull on backstay tension. A shorter "lever" is better.

widget iom model yacht

Many skippers have their spreaders too long. The spreaders should deflect the shrouds by only 10 to 12mm at most. When the rig is loaded up, the windward shroud will be under much more tension that the leeward one. Longer spreaders will have the effect of pushing the mast to leeward at that point when the shrouds are loaded up. The result is that the jib slot closes and the mainsail backwinds when under pressure.

The outer end of the spreaders should not snag the jib topping lift. The method is shown nicely in the Obsession Rigging guide drawn by Craig Smith

In addition, you may wish to retain the jib topping lift with some elastic at the bottom, so that if the jib boom lifts, the topping lift remains taut.

widget iom model yacht

The invention of variable geometry goosenecks has been an important development in ensuring more correct mainsail leech angles at all points of sailing. There are a number of these around – notably the goosenecks from AA Parts and from David Potter at Ullman Sails. Fitting these to the mast requires accuracy, so that the shaft of the gooseneck is exactly parallel to the mast when viewed from astern.

The small locking screw at the bottom of the gooseneck allows the bottom end of the gooseneck barrel to move aft when the main boom is sheeted in. This screw can be adjusted independently of the boom vang, so that mainsail leech angles can be set up for upwind and downwind independently of one another.

If using a parallel gooseneck - for example a ball raced gooseneck from Radio Yacht Supplies Australia (Bantock), then you can achieve the same effect by wrapping sticky back sail cloth three times around the mast at the bottom of the gooseneck. This offsets the axis of the gooseneck about the right amount.

when you attach the downhaul on the mainsail, it should pull to a point aft of the axis of rotation of the main boom. In this alignment, the downhaul will become tighter when the boom sheets in, and will loosen when you sheet out.

widget iom model yacht

JIB PIVOT POINT

The aim is to get your jib boom as low to the deck as practical. If the jib boom is too high off the deck, when a gust hits, the jib boom will move to leeward first and forestay sag will develop, resulting in loss of pointing ability and lee helm.

There is a good knot that you can use to attach string to the jib boom. There is a You Tube video which shows this knot, called “How to tie a “tonys knot” - a great video from Tony Gonsalves.

The placement of the pivot point is critical to the functioning of the jib. Too far forward, and you won’t be able to generate sufficient forestay tension. Too far aft, and the jib boom will not lift when a gust hits, and the angle of attack of the jib will be too wide, reducing pointing ability. As a guide, the jib boom should lift with about 320 to 350 grams of pressure.

JIB COUNTERWEIGHT

If your jib boom is low enough, you will find that the jib counterweight may hit the foredeck of your boat. To counteract this, try placing two right angled bends in the shaft of the counterweight, so that the weight sits higher than the line of the jib boom.

The first bend sends the shaft upwards and the second bend returns the counterweight to a direction parallel to the jib boom again. You will need to tie this in place, so that the counterweight cannot rotate downwards.

When setting up any bowsie, try to have the bowsie pull in the same direction as the control you are pulling when you are tightening the string. This is especially important on the backstay. Try to get the bowsie puling downwards when the backstay is being tightened. It makes it much easier to get adjustments right.

Bowsie threader – you can make a simple bowsie threader which will save you hours of time and frustration by simply bending thin wire over in two. Push the bend through the bowsie hole, and thread the string through the loop in the piece of wire. Pull the wire back through the bowsie hole.

A Very Useful Knot

You can watch a short video about how to tie a really useful knot by clicking on the "Play" button.....................

Instructions about how the knot can be made as follows:

Pass the piece of string through the hole that you want to tie to.

Tie a double overhand knot in the end of the string. You can burn the end.

Using the double overhand knot end of the string, make a single overhand knot around the string that passes through the fitting or loop. Pull tight. This knot will not undo unless you want it to, and will hold tighter the more pressure placed on the string.

This site is primarily intended to help those building a one off IOM (International One Metre) or a similar radio controlled model yacht. Essentially the hull and decks can either by built in Glass / Epoxy throughout, or in Wood - typically Cedar or Balsa (balsa needs glass sheathing), and with a very thin ply deck.

Where you are intending to build a few similar boats, for example a group of you want to build the same design, a female mould of some form should be made. This is not dealt with here.
