As long as he can remember, Jacques always loved travel, it was a passion. At the age of 15 , he hitchhiked all over Europe, but thought that the ideal way to travel was by boat. He wanted to sail around the world. At 16, he joined a sailing school and learned the ropes. That school also had a boat building and design class where he drew a kayak and built several of them. It was fun but nobody considered that this could be a career. 

At that time, there were no yacht design schools in continental Europe and there were zero expectations to ever find a yacht design job. Without a clear plan, Jacques started an engineering path in college, but after two years, switched to architecture for another two years. This mix of technical and creative skills did not give him any formal degree, but later, they complemented each other perfectly.

For about 10 years, he worked in Europe, as an engineer and building contractor, constantly thinking of sailing around the world. He owned several boats and sailed a lot. Sailing in maxi boats for the Admiral’s Cup but also dinghy racing, delivering power boats from Belgium to the Med, to Africa and the Persian Gulf. This included a good number of ocean crossings as captain. He did not miss one opportunity to get on the water. In the 70’s, he had the funds to start a small boatyard as a side business and built his dream boat. 

Finally, he set sail and meandered all over the place to end up in Florida where, in the early 80’s, he started working in the boat building industry.

Jacques’ first business was a company specializing in repowering large boats. He decided that this was better done using a computer and the brand-new 3D modeling software. Soon, well known yacht designers were asking him to draw lines and do calculations for them. He could do it very fast and accurately and was able to supply developed panels for aluminum and steel yachts. After a couple of years, he had what he considered to be the requirements to be a yacht designer: at least 10 years at sea on many different boat types, 10 years of boat building experience, and a good engineering background. 

During one of those jobs, with the help of resin and glass suppliers, he developed a material that could be used to build prototypes from which we could pull a mold. This was the epoxy plywood sandwich we use in most of the designs for amateurs. It is lighter but stronger than single skin fiberglass and except for areas of compound curvature, adequate for most power boat hulls. This created a solid foundation for the creation of the business.

In 1991, our boat plans and engineering services became available on the internet. Our first website showing boat plans, Bateau.com, was started that same year. In 1993, we expanded and began showing our study plans and pictures of our boats and operated our first online ordering system. Bateau.com was created to sell wooden boat plans and that business led to online plywood and epoxy sales , among other boat building supplies , each with their own website.  In 2016, the business was purchased by Jeff Morrow. Jeff consolidated the online businesses and has incorporated all the related websites into one convenient online store, BoatBuilderCentral.com. Now you can purchase plans, kits, paint, and other supplies in one simple transaction. Meanwhile, Jeff and Jacques continue to be partners in the selling of high-quality boat plans. Jacques provides continuous support and feedback on our Builder’s Forum to help builders in their construction journey. As always, we are here to help you build and finish the boat of your dreams.

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN VENDÉE 

The story of BENETEAU began in 1884 in the shipyards of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie in Vendée, inspired by Benjamin Bénéteau.  At the time, BENETEAU had close ties with the fishing industry and, at the start of the 20th century, the brand launched its first sailing trawlers and motor tuna fishing boats. 

In the 1960s BENETEAU turned towards the building of recreational craft. In making this choice, BENETEAU actively focussed on  sailing yachts  and motorboats . 

In the 1990s, BENETEAU expanded becoming the umbrella brand of GROUPE BENETEAU. 

WIDE RANGE OF SAILING YACHTS AND MOTORBOATS 

Today, BENETEAU offers a wide range of sailing yachts, ranging from small boats, like the First 14, to big boats, such as the Oceanis Yacht 62, a large monohull as well suited to coastal cruising as she is to ocean navigation. The same is true of the motorboats, with lines of outboard and inboard motorboats for leisure boating, as well as big yachts ideal for cruising. 

This versatility contributed to BENETEAU’s international reputation as a brand, both in the water and at the major boat shows in Europe, the United States and Asia-Pacific. It also helped BENETEAU become a historical player in offshore racing, supplying three generations of one-design boats for the Solitaire Le Figaro single-handed race. BENETEAU also won renown with the First sailing yachts in well-known international races such as the Fastnet, the Sydney Hobart and the Middle Sea Race.

Sandwich construction ensures longevity.

Isophthalic acid (IPA) resins in the outer layers used during the laminating process ensure that the hull of a BAVARIA is of the highest quality. These offer effective protection against osmosis and thus promote longevity of the BAVARIA. The hull and deck of a BAVARIA is formed by sandwich construction with foam inserts. In sailing yachts the deck is reinforced with aluminium sheets where fittings are mounted. In the so‐called „marrying“ process shortly before the end of production, the deck and hull are screwed and glued together.

Solid wood troughout, yet it is light on board

Over 40 years of experience in boat building craftsmanship are behind the workmanship in the wood inside a BAVARIA. And although modern machines facilitate the boat builders’ work in their own joiner’s workshops, their sense of proportion and their know‐how in dealing with different types of wood is a daily need that only they can satisfy. Mahogany, teak, oak, walnut, chestnut or Ocean Line – a BAVARIA offers individuality and an atmosphere in which you feel comfortable, no matter what type of wood you have chosen. And every BAVARIA encompasses a perfect balance of solid wood and sturdy laminates, because in the end the weight of a BAVARIA’s interior fittings also contribute towards steady seakeeping and excellent sailing characteristics.

Every fitting, every hatch is in its proper place

Before fitting and hatch assembly on deck, the milling and drilling has to be completed. To automate these tasks, BAVARIA developed a CNC system years ago that to date is unique in the global yacht and boat building industry. The deck layout of each type of yacht and the hole patterns for standard and optional equipment are stored by means of CAD/CAM. This requires hundreds of individual operations that are already predefined in the development phase of a yacht, and then optimised. The aim of this automation process was and is to reach a consistently high quality with continuous improvement in productivity. Precise arrangement of the deck openings is crucial in ensuring subsequent sealing.

Our week at sea with David was spectacular. There were two couples that shared the boat with David and two crew. From the moment we stepped on the boat we felt welcomed. The places David chose to take us were epic. We asked for quiet beaches and hidden places and David knew them all. His relationship with the locals on the islands brought an intimacy we didn’t expect . It was my husband’s birthday and a local restaurant even baked him a cake. The food on board was great and had lovely presentation. The weather was rough our week at sea however David quickly handled any situation that arose without hesitation or stress. I felt safe the entire week. The biggest bonus of the week was meeting his daughter Jeanne, who was crewing for him for internship hours. She was utterly delightful!!! Thank you David - See you again on your new boat .

Top and superb rental! We rented the boat for our valentine’s trip and it was wonderful - the weather also played along (although a bit cloudy/windy in the morning), but again it was February :) Carlos was very helpful and responsive to organizing our rental, and Toni who welcomed us in the harbor, gave us top diving and snorkeling tips. He was also very responsive throughout the day!

I discovered Click&Boat surfing the Internet. I am a naturally curious person, and your website caught my attention right away. I started reading about your general terms and conditions, where I quickly found a phone number. After talking to the client service, which was very pleasing, I decided to try out the platform.

At the age of 16, I was volunteering for the Red Cross of the Sea, where our goal was to assure sailing regattas. It is during that period that I learned to navigate on small boats for the first time. After 30 years, I finally got to own my first fishing boat bigger than 8 meters in length. Five years ago, a friend of mine who made his fishing boat available for charter, invited me to come aboard with him and some clients. It is then that I saw how much people appreciated the sea. So, I decided to pass my professional license to be able to take people out on the water in Mallorca.

The service that I offer is simple charters without skipper, because many people own a boat license, and our vessels are easy to handle. We are starting private excursions where we can take people on the boats to places they could not go to by themselves.

Most of the profits we make are spent on fleet upgrades. I always like to remember how thankful renters are when they are satisfied with our service.

Yes, you will have to pay a deposit on making the booking with the yacht charter company. Before heading out to sea you will pay a refundable security deposit on the yacht with a credit card but this can be covered by insurance that you can buy ahead of the trip.

As ever, if at sea and in danger you should call the Coastguard for help via Ch16 on VHF. If you can make it to your yacht charter destination safely do so, also call the yacht charter company for advice as they will always be there to help.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and what will your itinerary be along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper (bareboat yacht charter) then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and the ASA 104 Bareboat certificate - the rules vary in different destinations and boat types so please clarify this with the boat owner if you aren't sure. Small 'day boats' typically don't require licences and are referred to as 'self-drive'.

Sailing yachts start from around £1,000 per week, with canal and riverboats starting at the same price depending on where you are in the season. If you fancy treating yourself then luxury motorboats and superyachts are also available. Most boat types are typically available with or without a skipper.

Yacht vs Bateau : Quelles Différences ?

Definitions of words such as “yacht”, “boat”, or even “ship” are not always clear. Most of us make our own (unspoken) rules up, while others simply go with the flow and call their vessel whatever comes up at the moment.

So when does a boat become a yacht? Are all boats yachts? Are all yachts boats? What about ships?

Here is our subjective take on this vital matter.

The definition of a boat

In spoken or written English, it seems that anything able to float can be called a boat . It has little to do with size, function, or fit-and-finish. It is the most general term.

According to many dictionaries, boats are defined as “small vessels for traveling over water, propelled by oars, sails, or an engine”. So, a boat can have recreational purposes as well as commercial ones, but it is expected to be quite limited in size. 

A yacht : our unofficial definition

The word « yacht » generally refers to a more sophisticated craft than a boat or a ship. 

Yachts can be sailed or motorized: so catamaran, monohulls, or even trimarans can also be called “yachts”. 

To deserve their name, they have to be comfortable, spacious, well equipped and built with luxury in mind.

Regarding their functions, yachts are purely recreational. 

They are designed for relaxation and leisure first, even though they can be suitable for long stays at sea and transatlantic crossings.  

To sum up, as soon as your boat is a certain size and boasts several luxury features designed for leisure, then you can call it a yacht.

The definition of a ship

According to the Oxford dictionary, a ship is “a large boat for transporting people or goods by sea”.

The ship is associated with something larger and less fancy than a boat. 

It is a “working” vessel, unlike yachts which are made for leisure purposes.

A ship usually needs a full crew to operate. A yacht might need a full crew to operate depending on its size. A boat usually implies smaller vessels and therefore most of them don’t need a crew.  

Common vessels that are called “ships” include ferries, petrol tankers, or warships.

Details to look at to know if you are dealing with a boat, a yacht, or a ship

The size: one of the strong factors to identify a boat vs a yacht.

Size is one of the most determining factors to know how to call your vessel.

A boat is often expected to be smaller than a ship or a yacht. Generally, a vessel anywhere from 15-30 feet in length will be called a boat.

Starting from 15 meters (50 feet), private luxury recreational crafts can be considered yachts. 

Starting from 24 meters (79 feet), you are entering the superyachts area. 

Above, 50 meters can start talking about mega yachts. Obviously, there is no upper limit to mega yachts. Currently, Azzam, the world’s biggest yacht is 180 meters long (590 feet).

So when it comes to differentiating between boat and yacht, size does matter.

But size alone isn’t enough to know the sort of vessel you are dealing with.

The function of a yacht vs a boat isn’t the same

The main function of its vessel is one of the easiest ways to recognize a boat from a ship or a yacht.

Boats can be used for both leisure and business (fishing, day trips, police, …) depending on their size and options.

On the other hand, a yacht has a purely recreational function. Unlike a “boat”, it can be used for long voyages on oceans thanks to its larger size, better propulsion, advanced electronics, guidance, and safety equipment, but especially thanks to its comfort. Yachts can protect passengers from bad weather and the comfortable cabins can accommodate several passengers for long stays. Yachts are also often available for charter with a staff taking care of the guests at a high standard of comfort.

Ships primarily have commercial functions. It can be forwarding freight, crossing the sea with thousands of people on board, or going on a warzone with a unit and its material.

To add to the confusion, some mega yachts such as Christina O could be called ships due to their initial function or their size.

Besides these exceptions, it’s quite obvious to recognize a yacht from a boat or a ship simply by its size and the luxury of its amenities.

The luxury on board makes it a yacht or a boat

A yacht is a recreational vessel designed with luxury and comfort in mind. 

The facilities, be it furniture, rooms, living spaces, safety equipment, and navigation systems are all luxurious on a yacht. 

The notion of space is often very important to feel comfortable on board, even for long cruises. The largest and most luxurious yachts have various spaces such as beaches, sundecks … to make life on board as comfortable as on land, if not more.

To make it simple, if a vessel is luxurious, then more often than not, it’s a yacht.

The propulsion of the vessel can determine whether it’s a yacht or a boat

A boat can be rowed, propelled with its sails, or with one or several engines. 

Motorized small boats can have impressive speed on the water thanks to their lightweight, but their engines are usually less powerful and sophisticated than yacht engines. 

Some boats can sail long-distance when they are well equipped, such as solar panel, water maker etc.

On the other hand, equipment on yachts make them able to operate over very long distances, including crossing oceans.

Most ships are designed to cross the sea with safety and they are designed for this objective.

Looking at the propulsion is therefore not enough to know if a vessel is a boat, a yacht, or a ship, although it can give you a few clues.

The crew on board can tell the difference between a boat and a yacht

Commercial ships and professional boats obviously have experienced captains to sail them around the rough corners of the globe. 

For yachts and leisure boats, it is less obvious.

Big yachts owners usually employ professionals to sail, but also manage the daily operations onboard. The number of enrolled crew members depends on the yacht’ size.

Usually, boats do not need a professional enrolled skipper to operate, if you know how to sail. But you can always rent a boat and hire a skipper to bring you wherever you want.

So, what should you call your vessel? 

To make it simple, if your vessel is a  luxury craft above 50 feet, designed for fun, recreation, relaxation, and comfort, then call it a yacht.

Anything below that size, call it a boat.

If you own a working craft rather than something recreational, especially if it’s a long vessel, then you are free to call it a ship.

But let’s be honest, nobody will blame you if you use the wrong term. You are entirely free to continue calling your canoe a yacht if you like it that way!

Starting from 50 feet (15 meters), a pleasure boat is usually considered a yacht.

Yes, a 40-feet boat can be considered a yacht if it has recreational use and a luxurious outfit. Otherwise, it is only a boat!

By definition, a ship is a large vessel that crosses oceans and other deep waters for commercial purposes. It carries cargo or passengers or performs specialized missions, such as defense, research, and fishing. So a boat becomes a ship when it is big, it weighs at least 500 tonnes or above and it has commercial use.

Private recreational boats from 33 feet are actually yachts. Luxury is also an important point once defining a yacht.

No. If the boat doesn’t have a recreational purpose, if it is below 33 feet long (10 meters), or if it is not luxurious, it is not a yacht but a boat!

Russian oligarch's yacht is costing U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month

A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.

• The Justice Department is seeking permission to sell Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.
• Attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.

"It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale," according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.

The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.

The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country's invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort.

Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.

Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.

The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.

Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.

In court filings, Khudainatov's attorneys have objected to the U.S. government's efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.

Khudainatov's attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it's returned to its proper owner.

In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov "was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel."

The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, "there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members," according to the court filings.

The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.

"This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons," the government said in filings.

Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn't automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:
