The 8 Best New British Yachts on the Water, From Sunseeker to Fairline
Quality among the top u.k. builders is always a given. it's the range of yacht designs that may surprise you..
As an island, boats have always been the lifeblood of Great Britain. And many British yacht builders continue to uphold the country’s proud naval and maritime traditions. While there are a handful of superyacht builders, the UK isn’t known for eye-wateringly huge megayachts or avant-garde design—though that has changed as its largest international brands compete with the style-obsessed Ferretti Group and Azimut brands.
But what you do find with the Brits is well engineered vessels with a high level of attention to detail in both the interior and exterior design. From semi-custom motoryacht builders like Princess and Sunseeker to the rarefied realm of a highly sought-after Pascoe limousine, there’s something here for nearly every yachtsman.
And thanks to enduring popularity, there is nearly always a British-built sailboat from the Oyster yard, somewhere just over the horizon. In fact, whether you’re cruising the waters of the Caribbean, New England, or the South of France, you’ll find U.K. brands along with the highest luxury offerings from Italy and Northern Europe.
Here are seven of Britain’s finest, newest, and most noteworthy vessels on the water.
Project Fox, Pendennis Shipyard
This 114-foot explorer yacht, overseen by project manager Burgess and in build at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, was designed around the owner’s wishes. It has a rugged exterior that will be paired with a bright, contemporary interior by QLondon Design. The owner told Robb Report that he plans to cruise off-grid to remote areas like Norway for heli-skiing with his family and friends (thus necessitating five large staterooms). But he also wanted family-friendly features like a sun terrace, wine lobby, open-air barbecue, and DJ station. Of course, the real breakthrough here: The open stern, measuring more than 1,100 square feet can carry a large complement of toys and tenders, but also scientific equipment (the interior has space for a modular lab) for when the yacht is hosting research scientists. “Flexible cabins and connectivity are key,” said the owner.
The ubiquitous model of the Pearl lineup, the 72 received a creative new interior design earlier this year with the addition of a stateroom that gives it two master suites. The U.K. yard has always been high on haute design, offering different palettes by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, but this double-master suite idea is a first for this size of motoryacht. The yard has recently won awards for the naval architecture of its 95, which approaches superyacht status, and it will be launching a new 85-foot flybridge next year.
Fairline Targa 40
Fairline is also among England’s internationally renowned yacht brands, famous for seaworthy hulls and top-tier creature comforts. It hasn’t built yachts as large as competitors Princess and Sunseeker but has been equally creative with the design. The new Targa 40’s cockpit is a case in point. It has an enticing exterior layout, with the cockpit featuring a foldout terrace to starboard and a U-shaped dining settee to port facing the rest of the deck, not to mention the two sun lounges on the stern. The 40 is effectively a dayboat, but with two staterooms, it also works as a family weekender. There’s a master in the forepeak and guest cabin amidships which is best suited for children. The galley below decks is also very functional. Top speed for the Targa is 36 knots with the optional Volvo Penta D6-380 upgrades.
Princess Y80
Along with Sunseeker, Princess Yachts is the other heavyweight of British yacht building. These cruisers and motoryachts have proven to be perennial favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. The Y80 debuting at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival looks to continue the tradition. The Y80 brings to the table an “infinity cockpit” with a glass transom and modular furniture for multiple setups. It also has a flybridge that spans about two-thirds of the yacht’s nearly 84-foot length, effectively creating a legitimate third deck. The Y80’s owner’s stateroom is amidships and full beam, while it has a VIP in the forepeak. Two other guest cabins are to port and starboard. The Y80 has an impressive top speed of 30 knots, but at 10 knots the range is an even more impressive 1,000 nautical miles.
Cockwells Duchy Sport
The 37-foot Duchy Sport from the Cockwells’ yard in Cornwall, famous internationally for its custom tenders, is designed for watersports enthusiasts. This Sport offers multiple towing points for waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing, with interior space for nine guests. Bow and cockpit sunpads will be popular spots for tanning, while a Bimini covers the amidships. Standout features include a wetbar, retractable swim ladder, bowthruster with joystick control, and of course ample water-toy stowage. The Duchy Sport comes with twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LVs which can get it up to a top speed of 42 knots—a speed befitting of this model’s name. Cockwells is also building a new Duchy 60, a stylized motoryacht that should rival Downeast offerings from U.S. builders Hinckley and Malaysian builder Grand Banks.
The Oyster 495 is a 52-foot, 8-inch sailing yacht that entered the U.S. market earlier this year. A new design from the keel up, the U.K. builder was thinking global circumnavigation, or at least serious offshore cruising, from the onset. The yacht is also meant to be able to be singlehanded by a capable sailor. The plumb bow and teak decks imbue the 495 with a definite saltiness with performance and aesthetics. The cabin is noteworthy for being both ergonomic and well-lit. Reported top speeds for the 495 crest the 10-knot mark under sail, while a 100 hp Yanmar diesel pushes it along happily at 9.5 knots.
Sunseeker Superhawk 55
Sunseeker is one of England’s brands that has a global following. For good reason. The Poole builder has a range of vessels that extend from 38 to 161 feet. Sunseeker is known for good oceangoing performance and creative design. The Superhawk 55 is a reimagining of the Superhawks that enjoyed popularity with performance enthusiasts in the 1990s and Aughts before being discontinued in 2009. Sunseeker introduced the Superhawk 38 in 2020, which had echoes of its go-fast past. This 55, however, is more of a performance cruiser than a day boat. With twin Volvo Penta IPS950s the new Superhawk has a very respectable top end of 38 knots and a feature even Miami Vice hot-boat aficionados will appreciate—slow-speed maneuverability offered by pod propulsion. An aggressively raked profile complemented by stiletto-sharp hullside windows augment the Superhawk’s sporty vibe.
Pascoe E-Limousine Electric Tender
Pascoe tenders reside in the garages of some of the world’s biggest and most glamorous superyachts, thanks to the yard’s dedication to customization. The E-Limousine is the builder’s first fully electric vessel, the result of six years of R&D. Top speed is reported to be an impressive 40 knots, with a range of 60 nautical miles at a fast cruise of 20 knots. The builder says not only is this boat greener than a traditional tender but will also offer a smoother, quieter ride thanks to the construction used to mitigate vibration.

What makes the British superyacht industry great?
1. let’s start at the beginning.
The British superyacht industry is, in some sense, a glittering flotilla of individuals and superyacht businesses who are bonded by a common strand of British nautical DNA. At the risk of stating the obvious, the British do like yachting. They have always liked yachting and generally, they’ve been quite good at it. Whether it was King Edward VII’s grand racing exploits on the Cote D’Azur or the superyacht design rock that was dropped in the UK’s design pond in the 1960s by the modern master of superyacht design, Jon Bannenberg , the UK and superyachts have an unbreakable union that persists to this day. No other nation has unfurled its superyacht expertise as often as this island nation has.
Perhaps, there is nothing particularly ground-breaking in that statement, but it does trigger a contemplation on the continuing cultural link of Britain to the business of the sea. So, it is in 2022 as it was in 1754 when novelist Henry Fielding described British sailors as “…perfect masters of their business, always extremely alert and ready in executing it, without any regard to fatigue or hazard,” indeed he could have described any of the then British maritime trades in the same way.
The Restoration of 1660 had the new King Charles II return to England with a passion for the yachts he had seen during his exile in Holland. Charles II had become familiar with the Dutch practice of canal and river boats being luxuriously fitted out for the comfort of the grandees of Dutch society as they travelled by water from town to town. Yachts became a passion for the new king. Although the Dutch gifted him the yacht Mary , Charles wanted better. English diarist Samuel Pepys wrote on 8 November 1660, that Mary “…is one of the finest things that I ever saw for neatness and room in so small a vessel” and on the King’s command a new yacht was commissioned, the designers and builders of which had to surpass Mary and had to do so as a matter of honour and national pride. That yacht became Katherine , the first British designed and built luxury yacht which would eventually make Britain world class luxury yacht builders.
2. Reimaging the future of superyachts
This history has created a narrative from which the British superyacht world draws inspiration, and the rest of the superyacht industry looks to for expertise. All of which gets pulled together by Superyacht UK, the trade association that represents the British superyacht industry. On another level, in the field of superyacht design, the UK often leads.
Jon Bannenberg is described as the father of modern superyacht design. His influence in determining what large superyachts look like is without parallel. Bannenberg, and those who once trained with Jon Bannenberg, have dominated the large superyacht design world for many years. Leading design house RWD had a close connection with that Bannenberg ecosystem with Mark Whitely having worked with Bannenberg alumnus Andrew Winch. RWD is regularly designing one-off bemouths to be built at Lürssen, Feadship or Amels.
The UK is still an unrivalled centre for superyacht design, whether it is interior or exterior styling or indeed yachting naval architecture. For example, the Solent University degree programmes in yacht and power craft design have their former students working at superyacht naval architectural offices and superyacht builders across the world. Some return to tank test their more challenging designs before those superyachts are built in the Netherlands, Italy or Germany.
3. We still build superyachts…. And the clever stuff that makes them!
It is true that the UK may no longer be building the volume of superyachts built elsewhere, but what the UK does design, and build is wanted because of its innovation and the quality of its crafts. The 19th century yacht building excellence that existed on the river Clyde has been inherited by Sunseeker International, Oyster Yachts , Princess Yachts and at Pendennis .
The newly launched Sunseeker 100 is a strikingly luxurious diminutive cruiser whilst the Princess X Class range has torn up the rule book on pocket superyachts. The X Class is a brilliant British superyacht collaboration between Princess Yachts and designers Olesinki who teamed up with Italian styling powerhouse Pininfarina . As of January 2022, Princess Yachts had 30 orders for their X80 . Innovation in design yes, but always underpinned by a tradition of doing things right.
The new is always energising, but one could not fail to stand in awe of the restoration of the classic 1929 built clipper bowed gentleman’s cruising yacht, the 71 metre Haida 1929 . The restoration was conceived by British designer Adam Lay and beautifully executed by Pendennis. Rebuilt with tenderness and respect. But the UK also has a thriving network that exports marine equipment and provides some of the most spectacular tenders.
4. We know our stuff
The ancestry of a company like Falcon Tenders is an important element of their success. A modern heritage brand if you will. The legendary yacht design and naval architecture of William Fife , GL Watson , or Laurent Giles set the standard in the Golden Age of luxury yachting. Laurent Giles are still part of a cohort of British superyacht subject matter experts that are in demand all over the world, because they are good at what they do. They were responsible for the naval architecture on the new Wally 27m why200 hybrid superyacht , and they are currently working on a 110m hybrid yacht known as Project Atlas. This technical subject matter expertise is widely sought after. The names change but the expertise stays the same. BMT Nigel Gee was a mainstay of the superyacht scene.
They are now Lateral but their know-how and know-why is undiminished and unchanged with current projects stretching from the Netherlands to Turkey. Lateral’s story is not unusual. British-based naval architects, engineers and surveyors are often called upon to do the technical grubby stuff necessary to make a superyacht build or refit successful. If you find yourself at a superyacht builder and ask to speak to the owner’s rep, often that person will be employed by one of the British houses. A Royale Oceanic or Winterbothams surveyor or technical expert is a familiar sight at many a European superyacht builder.
5. The small print
And when you’re not bumping into a Superyacht UK member surveying or approving the engineering of a superyacht, you will almost certainly find the lawyer or the insurer or the guys who set up the ownership structures sat somewhere in the UK. The way the superyacht world does business has for more than 20 years been built on the legal and tax expertise of some of the best corporate and superyacht lawyers in the world. HfW, Hill Dickinson, Lester Aldridge amongst others, have framed, legally, how superyachts are built, bought, and sold for many years. It’s true that English law is not everyone’s favourite cup of tea, however even those contracts that are governed by Dutch, German or Italian law have often taken as their text the contracts drafted in the UK where we have a tradition of yacht-specific law that goes back more than a hundred years.
The same goes for insurance and the UK. British superyacht insurance is built upon an insurance tradition that goes back 350 years. The grandfather of modern superyacht insurance broking Nick Sturge, the venerable but now retired and ever charming former paterfamilias of what is now Howden Sturge, had an approach to insurance which is founded on a deep understanding not only of yachting but also needs of the yacht owner that came from the principle that expertise is knowledge plus customer service.

Attention to detail is the pride of our design team. Headed up by award-winning naval architect Bill Dixon, Pearl’s design ethos of beautifully crafted yachts, leading innovation and superb sea-keeping is evident in both the aesthetics and functionality, with key pioneering steps in the most exciting new directions being made across the whole range of yachts. Adding an extra cabin where no other brand could, integrating next-generation propulsion systems ahead of the rest, and drawing striking, recognizable lines for the exterior are just a few examples of how Bill Dixon has brought Pearl Yachts into competition with the industry frontrunners.
DESIGNING THE EXPERIENCE
Discover beauty within.
No other yacht company works with the world-renowned British designer Kelly Hoppen CBE. Her ever-evolving style, defined by a subtle fusion of clean lines and neutral tones, intuitively balanced with an opulent warmth, has been honoured with numerous prestigious awards. Every Pearl is a canvas, upon which Kelly’s unmistakable design philosophy takes shape into a unique and surprising yet coordinated interior. For owners, this means the very thing one buys a yacht to secure: to feel in place wherever one goes, to find one’s intuitions reflected in the environment and to keep the mind sharp without feeling on edge. In other words, Kelly has a knack for putting things together as they should be.

Best Sunseeker Yachts for Sale
British luxury yacht builder, Sunseeker, is renowned for its tech-savvy yachts with stylish design. A pioneering firm that helped to create the motor yachts we know today, Sunseeker is continuing its tradition of hand-built, hand-finished yachts. The Sunseeker range runs the gamut of powerboats from 38 to 161 feet (11.5m to 49m). Yachts in the larger range can be completely customized to the buyer’s specifications.
From its humble beginnings to its now worldwide notoriety, Sunseeker has a proud heritage. The name is synonymous with performance and luxury. Having now built 100 yachts over 100 feet (30.48m), the builder continues to set and exceed standards, solidifying Sunseeker yachts for sale as some of the most sought-after on the market.
Luxury Yachts Built for Sport & Leisure
Sunseeker Yachts, then known as Poole Power Boats, first opened its doors in 1969 on the south coast of Poole, England. There, Robert Braithwaite conceptualized a new kind of boat that would be built utilizing new technology and materials. He based his creation on customers who envisioned a different kind of on-water experience.
History of Sunseeker Yachts
After launching the Sovereign 17 and the Sovereign 20 in the early 1970s, Sunseeker solidified itself as the UK’s most significant sport and leisure boat builder. Further innovations lead to Sunseeker’s move into the Mediterranean market with yachts like the Offshore 28. This performance model truly secured Sunseeker a spot on the international stage. The subsequent Portofino 31 and Tomahawk 37 models of the 80s took their design cues straight from the dream boards of Sunseeker owners and potential buyers. Sunseeker launched the Predator 80 in the 1990s and set a new benchmark for style, performance and accommodation. At the turn of the century, Sunseeker broke into the 100-foot-plus market with the 105 Yacht. Since that momentous launch, Sunseeker has delivered more than 100 yachts larger than 100 feet (30.48m). The brand continues to use innovative techniques to push the boundaries of style, design and performance of its yachts.
What Makes Sunseeker Yachts Different?
“Sunseeker is one of the most well-known brands in the production yacht market. Now offering yachts from 40 to 161 feet (12.9 to 49m) in various styles, Sunseeker casts a wide net,” says Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Wes Sanford. “The facility in the UK is possibly one of the most modern and technically advanced of all yacht manufacturers, which, in part, is necessary to keep up with demand and production. Sunseeker is proud to produce “handmade” yachts,” says Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Joe Foggia. “As a whole, Sunseeker is one of the best builders as far as quality and reliability are concerned. Sunseeker yachts are built to withstand the rough conditions of the English Channel and the North Sea. These yachts are constructed with a Deep-V hull shape to facilitate a more comfortable ride. This combined with ultra-modern lines and hugely customizable interiors has made Sunseeker a popular global choice.”
Northrop & Johnson is proud to offer the most impressive Sunseeker yachts for sale. Boasting impeccable design, excellent performance prowess, handcrafted detailing and fine-quality craftsmanship, these luxury yachts for sale offer style, safety and seaworthiness. Sunseeker offers both production and bespoke yachts. Sunseeker recently launched its largest offering to date, the 161. This beautiful 161-foot (49m) tri-deck superyacht features the striking exterior design for which Sunseeker yachts are renowned, as well as immense volume and a completely customizable interior that will suit the taste of any yacht owner. The Sunseeker Fleet
Sunseeker boasts a range of yachts starting at 38 feet (11.58m) all the way to 161 feet (49m), these include the Hawk, a 38-foot (11.58m) high-performance day boat, Manhattan, an innovative motor yacht that comprises a 52-foot (15.8m) or 66-foot (20.11m) version, the Predator — possibly the brand’s most well-known yacht, it is available as a 50, 57 or 74 , the 74 Sport Yacht and lastly, the Yacht collection — which offers the 76 Yacht, 86 Yacht, 95 Yacht, 116 Yacht, 131 Yacht and the new 161 Yacht, all customizable to an owner’s tastes.
The Hawk is a dynamic and exciting 38-foot (11.58m) day boat boasting incredible power and performance thanks to twin Mercury 400R outboards mated to Mercury Racing Digital Zero Effort throttles. The Hawk is capable of cruising at 62 knots. Thanks to its outboard engines, the yacht not only offers incredible performance, but also ensures low-cost maintenance.
The Manhattan, available as a 55 or 68, features an inventive design with large windows throughout, allowing all on board to enjoy the views while cruising. Ample entertainment options are available and social spaces are aplenty. The yacht’s Portuguese bridge features bow seating and sunbathing. The yacht is exceptionally well outfitted from the main-deck galley to the salon. Below deck, guests will fall in love with the four spacious cabins, including a full-beam master with private access to the salon, a VIP and two twins.
The 74 Sport Yacht bridges the gap between style and speed. Built in true Sunseeker style, she offers sleek lines and a low profile. Entertaining aboard is easy thanks to large fore and aft sunpads, ample comfortable seating, and hydraulic drop-down cockpit doors that allow the indoor spaces to seamlessly flow outside. The stylish bridge is the perfect place to take in the views and enjoy life at sea. Reaching speeds of up to 38 knots and carrying eight guests and two crew, the 74 Sport Yacht is an on-water sensation.
The Predator collection is one of the most well-known by the builder. Available as a 50, 57 or 74, Predator yachts are distinct and impressive. She boasts a remarkable speed of up to 45 knots and a well-thought-out design concept that includes a sliding glass roof. This refined series of yachts can cater to anywhere from four to eight guests aboard.
The Sunseeker Yacht series comprises the largest yachts available by the builder. From 76 (22.86m) to 161 feet (49m) and various options in between, the Yacht series offers uncompromised beauty, style and performance. Staying true to Sunseeker exterior styling, the yachts in this series all have impressive lines and feature incredible performance abilities. British luxury yacht-builder Princess sets sail to find new owners
The appointment of bankers to find a buyer for Princess Yachts comes after some of the world's most valuable vessels were seized by authorities enforcing Russian sanctions, Sky News learns.
City editor @MarkKleinmanSky
Friday 27 May 2022 14:05, UK
Britain's biggest luxury yacht-builder is being put up for sale even as a string of the world's most valuable private vessels are being seized by governments clamping down on their sanctioned Russian owners.
Sky News has learnt that L Catterton, the private equity group, has hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Plymouth-based Princess Yachts .
A formal process is yet to get under way but is expected in the coming months, according to City sources.
Princess's valuation was unclear on Friday, although one insider indicated that it was unlikely to represent one of L Catterton's most successful exits.
The business was founded in 1965, and distributes through a 50-strong global network.
It has been backed by L Catterton and its predecessor entity since 2008, making it a lengthy period of ownership by the standards of private equity backers.
Princess's boats have become symbols of luxury among the world's super-rich, although in recent months a number of yachts have been seized by authorities around the world as they seek to prevent sanctioned Russians from retaining their most prized assets.
