RCYC Sailing Academy

Welcome to the RCYC Sailing Academy

The RCYC Sailing Academy was formally established in 2012 at the Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town Elliot basin, Table Bay, Duncan Road. The Academy was initially created as the Royal Cape Yacht Club’s CSI program, which was aimed at addressing the lack of access to our sport, for marginalized communities.

The Academy was formed with the aim to create opportunities for previously disadvantaged youth and address the imbalance of representation of people of colour within the Club.  We often work with The homestead foundation for street children and the Emagqabini education foundation , tutoring kids in Khayelitsha. The Academy found a pool for new students, who represented the most under-resourced communities in our society and aim to empower the kids through sailing and hopefully someday they will become a strong constituency of our sport and redress our diversity challenge.

In 2018 we registered as an NPO with our primary focus being skills development through sailing. The Academy has a standing committee which reports to the Executives of the Club.  In 2019 the Academy registered as a PBO and was approved in 2020 with qualifying criteria being skills development and welfare.

RCYC Sailing Academy runs its sailing programs mostly on weekends and we participate in big regattas and other races. The Academy has a variety of boats including 6 L26 boats  and 1 Lavranos 36  and undertakes sailing training during weekends and regattas. The L26 design is believed to be conducive for beginners, as the nature of it forces individual to be hands on all the times and enforces team work in many occasions. The Academy has more than 6 skippers, one Offshore Skipper and one senior instructor, who are fully qualified and experienced.

Our training program takes place between 10h00 to 15h00 weekend days, unless otherwise indicated. The program has been very instrumental in developing and nurturing raw sailing talent and the development of new skills, team work and sportsmanship amongst our students.

Previous success stories include Yonela Mkaza who was invited to Spain in 2018 to experience keelboat sailing. Two students, Yonela Tenela and Daniel Agulhas have coached sailing programmes in the American Summer Camps, in 2019.  Lebogang January took part in a Youth Regatta in New Zealand in 2020. One of our instructors, Athi Vena, is now  instructing at Milnerton Aquatic Club. Academy instructor Sibu Sizato has his Offshore Skippers ticket and has represented South Africa at World Championships.

The Academy crew has competed in the 2023 Cape2Rio race on board of “Alexforbes Archangel” a Lavranos 36. The Alexforbes ArchAngel crew comprised of skipper Sibusiso Sizatu (30), first mate Daniel Agulhas (29), Renaldo Tshepo Mohale (29), Azile Arosi (22) and Justin Peters (21).  The Academy are very proud of their 3 rd place result, winning the Punte Del Este trophy and the Telescope Trophy for Offshore Youth.

Getting Started

If any or all of this is interesting to you the next step is to visit the Club. Stop by, look around, and meet some of our members. If no one stops you to talk, introduce yourself. We are a friendly bunch.

Weekends, except January when the Club is closed, and Wednesday nights from mid-May to late September (when we have evening races) are the most active times and the best times to visit.

You don't need a boat or experience to get started. Many of our members would be happy to take you out and "show you the ropes," and some of our most active members crew for other members but don't have their own boat. We are a diverse bunch and there's room for pretty much everyone.

If you have specific questions, please contact us using this link .

Special Events

Youth activities.

Our youth are welcome at and participate in most of the general Club activities but there are also special programs and activities just for them:

  • Sail Camp for those from 8-16. This camp is open to non-members as well. Instruction is divided by experience level and geared to new sailors, those at an intermediate level and those more advanced. Classes are small enough to permit personalizing instruction by our Certified Instructors.
  • NCYC's Junior Racing program including a regatta series with events at several area clubs and participation at Junior Bayweek.
  • Advanced Racing Clinics run periodically using nationally recognized instructors. The Clinics are also open to non-members and draw sailors from as far away as Cleveland and Detroit.

Message from the Commodore

On behalf of the Flag Officers and the membership, I am pleased to welcome you to the web site for North Cape Yacht Club. From our early beginnings, our club has endeavored to promote yachting and the enjoyment all that Western Lake Erie has to offer. Through our affiliation with the I-LYA, AYC and DRYA organizations, North Cape welcomes guests and visitors from near and far.

NCYC has a tradition of hosting sailboat racing events, cruising events and local organizations focused on the stewardship of the waterways. During the sailing season we host regattas at the National and North American Championship level, regattas for one-design fleets at the districts and local fleet level and for our Junior sailors regattas and clinics which prepare and qualify them for competition at the national level. Our vibrant cruising fleet offers participants 3 major cruising events, visiting harbors spread across Western Lake Erie, along with many shore-side social gatherings. In the colder off-season we host many family-friendly events, social events, seminars and meetings of interest to nautical enthusiasts from the local community.

Our commitment to the future of water sports provides ample motivation for the enthusiastic group of members who manage and produce our Adult Learn to Sail program and our world renowned Junior Sailing program. Adults of all ages will find a comprehensive and personalized training program focused on helping them learn the skills for safe and enjoyable sailing experiences. Youth will find a sail camp which provides a fun day-camp experience focused on learning to sail. More experienced youth who wish to sail competitively will find a vibrant and high-level race team with a long history of producing regional, national and olympic champions.

Cape Coral is a vibrant, sun-soaked haven of natural beauty, and Yacht Club Public Beach is its crown jewel. Found on the southern outskirts of the city limits, visitors are greeted with powdery white sand and a blissful wave-lapped shoreline that stretches for miles.

Yacht Club Beach, located on the Caloosahatchee River offers more than just breathtaking views – it’s also home to an array of activities and amenities that will make your visit even more enjoyable. From lounging in the sun on a beach chair or swing, to trying out some water sports such as jet skiing or paddle boarding, there’s something for everyone here! The beach also has facilities like changing rooms and restrooms, plus a restaurant called The Boathouse that makes for a great lunch spot if you don't want to bring a picnic lunch after a long morning on the sand.  The Boathouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner right at the beach.  It's so nice to sit outside in the sun and see the views of Yacht Club Public Beach and the river.  Live music is played on weekends.

The Boathouse

Even though our beach is small, it's perfect for families, and we don't have problems with partying spring-breakers, which is nice during March and April.

There's plenty of soft white sand and sunshine to please everyone. The beach is only a 15-minute drive from most of the Cape and parking is free.   Walk on the fishing pier, pack the beach toys, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the shoreline or a complete the day with a beautiful sunset and an evening of star-gazing.

When I homeschooled, we would whoop it up a bit ... we'd grab our books, bikinis, beach gear, and hit the sand!

Kids will love the shaded playground when taking a break from sand and swimming.

The beach's amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, public boat ramp and convenient parking lot, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all.

It's fun to go to the Sunset Celebration, which happens the first Wednesday of the month from 4-7PM or 5-8PM,  depending on Daylight Savings, October - June.

Cape Coral set final site plan for the Yacht Club; timeline for renovations still shaky

cape yacht club

Cape Coral City Council choose the final site plan for the Yacht Club, though the project is still at the mercy of permitting and has no set date.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a riverside beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but will soon undergo major renovations.

Here's what we know:

Changes to the Yacht Club site plan

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information as a follow-up from a discussion in November.

There the council directed him to adjust the original renovation plans, which included a two-story community center, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The major updates based on previous comments now include:

•Realigned, curved entry into the park•Additional landscape buffering at the garage•Relocate the fountain to the park entry area•Shift the restroom on the beach to be more central•Maintain a walkable path connecting the beachfront•Prefer a longer pier and no restaurant at the pier•Resort pool with lap lane option•Provide a “quick snack” food option•Confirm parking counts per code based on uses

The proposed total parking at the yacht club includes 754 spaces: 596 for cars and boat trailers and 158 total boat slips.

There are currently 438 car parking spaces at the yacht club and 113 boat slips.

Pankonin said an additional proposed fourth level for the parking garage would provide an estimated 150 more parking spaces for a total of 904.

The new two-story community center would have 37,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, retail space, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.

Previous discussions  said the project could cost up to $100 million.

Cape Coral Council OKs new design, wants fourth floor of parking

The council overwhelmingly favored the changes and new design, but they had some minor adjustments.

Councilmember Tom Hayden said some details still need to be worked out with the pool and fountain, but he likes the new designs.

He wanted to explore adjusting the length and lanes of the pool for competitive uses and find a way to make the fountain more visible to people entering and leaving the area.

Hayden favors adding a fourth parking floor to the garage.

"I think that's always going to be my biggest concern is to make sure that we have adequate parking and people are not hunting for space," Hayden said.

He said he still wants to see a room dedicated to the old Yacht Club.

Councilmember Bill Steinke asked about the pool lanes, and Hayden said he wanted to see eight lanes for competitions.

Steinke said he views the pool element more as a recreational amenity than competitive, so eight lanes is a bit much for him.

"You are not going to do competitive events in 25 meters, so I think expanding it a little bit for four lanes would be good," Steinke said.

New Councilmember Richard Carr said he also wanted to see a fourth level of parking, with parking spaces for the disabled taken into account.

Councilmember Dan Sheppard said he commends the work on the new design and is for it 100%.

"I believe this will be an extreme asset to our city, " Sheppard said.

He agrees with Stienke on the part of a recreational pool and wants to see a competitive pool elsewhere in the city.

Sheppards also wants the fourth floor of parking.

Mayor John Gunter sees the yacht club as a recreational facility and prefers a few lap lanes.

He also wants additional finger piers on the existing pier location.

"We want to make sure we maximize that access," Gunter said.

He also agrees with adding to parking.

"You'll probably be at capacity day one, so I would advocate for that fourth level," Gunter said.

Councilmembers Keith Long, Jessica Cosden, and Robert Welsh also agree with the fourth floor of parking.

Permitting woes could delay work to rebuild Yacht Club

Though the city is making headway in its vision for the Yacht Club, permitting creates uncertainty on when things can move forward.

Cape Coral is planning to demolish the main buildings at the yacht club, including the main ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Previously slated for demolition in late December/January, city officials anticipate getting under contract with a company for demolition within 30 days.

"Once under contract, the company will apply for permits with the City and begin demolition activities," said Cape Coral spokesperson Kaitlyn Mullen in an email statement.

Residents can use the beach while the demolition takes place.

Spokesperson Melissa Mickey confirms that no date is set on when demolition will begin.

Steinke asked about repairs to the boat launch to make it usable before demolition and groundbreaking starts.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said they are waiting on permits from the Army Corps of Engineers.

He said the city will provide information on whether that will be beneficial in terms of time and resources, as they will need that space closed once demolition begins.

"So it's kinda like a crystal ball planning, so we can say go and repair the finger pier and say that we are going to open it, but then it's just time depended on the demolition permit and the Army Corps," Ilczyszyn said.

Ilczyszyn said if the city starts demolition within 30 days, it could take 60 to 90 days to complete, and he anticipates that by May, the city could have the permit necessary to start marine work.

Ilczyszyn could not answer if all the work at the yacht club could be finished within the next three to four years.

He also clarifies that after the demolition is over, there will be a period before construction can begin.

"We are still on two years for the site," Ilczyszyn said. "Now it's just how long does it take to design this and construct it?"

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.
