A Singapore -based family has formed Echo Yachts, a yacht manufacturer positioned in Western Australia ’s Henderson Marine Precinct to undertake the construction of the family’s yachts, comprising the largest ever super yacht built in Australia . The Company has brought together a regional ‘who’s who’ in the Australian super yacht industry.

Echo Yachts - Sheds

The 84 metre aluminium yacht will also be the largest tri-hulled super yacht ever built anywhere – with tri-hull configuration allowing for an impressive 20 metre beam which in turn will accommodate a vast deck expanse and palatial interior spaces. Construction will take 3 years from start to finish.

The arrangement also includes the construction of a 46 metre fibreglass catamaran that will be deployed as a support vessel for the larger build. The catamaran will carry 12 tenders designed with a range of sporting and exploratory capabilities.  A 12m tender will be equipped with full navigation systems and high tech 3D sonar’s for the exploration of sea beds and sunken wrecks.

Both the super yacht and the support vessel will feature unique hull forms and the construction processes will incorporate numerous state-of-the-art build techniques and bold engineering ideas.

Commenting on the project, Echo Yachts director Mark Stothard said “Together with my partners Jurien Van Rongen and Nick Gardiner, we are thrilled to have been selected to head-up this project and, we are very excited about the world-class credentials of those who will be working with us.”

The super yacht’s external design and interior styling will be led by Fremantle based and world-renowned super yacht supremo, Sam Sorgiovani .

One2three Naval Architects, who operate from both Sydney and Henderson, will act as the project’s naval architects.

Construction of the support vessel is already well under-way with completion scheduled for late 2015. Designed by New Zealand’s LOMOcean , the vessel boasts the project’s hallmark and cutting-edge hull forms, lightweight lay-ups and state of the art build techniques.

Echo Yachts signs contract for world's largest sail-powered catamaran

Australian builder Echo Yachts has announced the construction of a full-custom, 57-metre catamaran. 

Commissioned by an "experienced [and] private client", it is slated to become the world's largest sail-powered catamaran and supersede the recently-delivered ArtExplorer . This marks the shipyard's entry into the large, custom sailing yacht market.

The catamaran will have a total sail area of 1660 square metres and an "extremely efficient" aluminium hull form for "eco-efficient, long range cruising".

Dykstra Naval Architects will be responsible for exterior styling, layout and naval architecture, while One2Three Naval Architects will work across details and structural design. The team's combined portfolio includes the 106.7-metre Black Pearl , the 66.9-metre Hetairos , the world's largest trimaran White Rabbit and Australia's largest catamaran, Charley 2 .

"Echo Yachts are extremely excited and proud to have been selected to custom build this magnificent catamaran sailing superyacht, and look forward to bringing the yacht to fruition with our client, Dykstra and One2Three," said shipyard owner and director Mark Stothard. "This new superyacht will truly elevate the term ‘green superyacht design’ with its low resistance catamaran hull form, sail-powered capability and other emission-reducing technologies."

One2Three Naval Architects owner and director Steve Quigley added: "This sailing catamaran will cement Echo Yachts’ Australian build capability on the world stage for unique superyachts."

The news follows Charley 2 's delivery in October 2023.

Echo Yachts builds on local expertise

Henderson-based superyacht builder Echo Yachts takes a different approach to most manufacturers – its workers have been told to slow down, and now they are setting records.

Henderson-based superyacht builder Echo Yachts takes a different approach to most manufacturers – its workers have been told to slow down, and now they are setting records.

Echo Yachts is a rarity in Western Australia – a niche manufacturer growing its business by targeting export sales to a wealthy international clientele.

Echo, which is a finalist in this year’s Rising Stars awards, is building two superyachts for one client – an 84-metre trimaran with every imaginable luxury, and a 46-metre support vessel with a helicopter and 11 watercraft.

The 84-metre vessel, known as White Rabbit Golf, is the largest superyacht ever built in Australia and the largest trimaran superyacht in the world.

The work undertaken by Echo builds on the shipbuilding expertise developed in WA over the past 25 years, through companies like Austal , Oceanfast (which was bought by Austal ), and Wavemaster International (which no longer operates).

This accumulated expertise also explains why German industrialist Guido Krass selected Henderson as the base for his low-profile superyacht company, Hanseatic Marine.

Hanseatic (which has been branded SilverYachts since 2014) has completed four superyachts since opening its doors in 2005 and is currently working on a fifth vessel.

It has the benefit of a wealthy owner who self-funds each vessel, before selling or keeping them.

Echo, by contrast, has to manage challenges like a fluctuating currency, variable labour costs and an uncertain order book – factors that historically have plagued the ship building industry in WA.

Cruising evolution

Echo, which was established in 2014, works closely with sister company Evolution Commercial, which opened for business in 2010.

Jurien Van Rongen and Mark Stothard , who have extensive experience in the industry, are directors and shareholders of both companies.

“We have Evolution Commercial providing the skilled workforce for both companies’ projects, and Echo Yachts providing the specialist management, design and project management for superyacht new builds,” Mr Van Rongen told Business News.

Evolution, which also builds fast ferries, wind farm vessels and crew transfer vessels, has been fully exposed to WA’s economic volatility.

“In our first three years of business we tripled our turnover every year,” Mr Van Rongen said.

“We did a lot of work for the Gorgon project and the marine operators up there.

“When the jetty was getting finished, it was like the tap was turned off.

“We went from having a massive amount of work to almost nothing.”

That changed again in 2014 when the group struck a deal to build the two superyachts currently under construction, reportedly for Singaporean businessman Goh Hup Jin.

Niche leader

Mr Van Rongen believes Echo has stamped itself as a market leader.

“We’re probably the most innovative company in shipbuilding in Australia,” he said.

“We’re the only shipyard that can build in steel, composite and aluminium, from commercial to superyacht level.”

The group has gone from 50 to 300 employees in the past 12 months, and over that time has improved its safety incident rate and maintained very low turnover.

Mr Van Rongen said one of his goals was to bring the glory back to building superyachts.

“I’ve told workers I want them to slow down, I want them to think ahead; do the job once, do it right, and we’re now breaking records,” he said.

“That’s really evident in the last three vessels that we’re delivered – two to Denmark and one to Taiwan.

“They’ve just finished their warranty period and the claim on all three vessels was zero, not one dollar, and I’ve never had that before.”

Future of yacht building

Mr Van Rongen is optimistic about securing more work.

“There’s plenty of work that is very close to signing at the moment, so there will be continuity,” he said.

“We’re reasonably close to another, smaller superyacht.”

The group was also pursuing contracts for commercial vessels, refit and repair work for the oil and gas sector, and conversions of workboats into ‘explorer’ yachts ( see here ).

In addition, Mr Van Rongen has established a subsidiary to pursue defence sector work.

“We’re new to that, but we can certainly contribute substantial portions to projects,” he said.

“The government said they are going to spend $189 billion on new vessels and sustainment, and most of the sustainment is going to be done here in Western Australia, so that’s a great opportunity for us.”

The award winning 83.99m/275'7" motor yacht 'White Rabbit' was built by Echo Yachts at their Henderson, WA shipyard. Her interior is styled by Australian designer design house Sam Sorgiovanni and she was delivered to her owner in October 2018. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Sam Sorgiovanni.

Guest Accommodation

White Rabbit has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 30 guests in 15 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 32 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Her features include piano, movie theatre, spa, satellite communications, underwater lights, gym, deck jacuzzi, WiFi and air conditioning.

Range & Performance

White Rabbit is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin electric STADT (No-Loss drives) 2,816hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 13 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 166,200 litre fuel tanks at 13 knots. Her water tanks store around 51,700 Litres of fresh water. She was built to DNV (Det Norske Veritas) ✠ 1A1 LC Yacht, R0 E0 classification society rules.
