Yacht sinking that killed stuart pedersen leads to rule change.

The sinking of a yacht which left the skipper - an ACT Party candidate - dead could have been avoided if storm covers were fitted to the cabin windows, a Maritime NZ report has found.

The 14m yacht Essence foundered in heavy seas off Cape Brett in Northland on 14 October 2019 on a return sailing to New Zealand from Fiji.

The skipper, Stuart Pedersen, died after it started taking water and sank 37km from the Cape. His wife and two others were also on board.

Pedersen was a well-known Tauranga sailor , an entrepreneur, chair of the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy Trust, and a candidate for the ACT Party, though Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat club commodore Andy Knowles said he "absolutely hated the idea of actually going into Parliament".

The report said the ship began sinking after repeatedly striking heavy waves, which entered the cockpit and smashed the rear windows.

"As conditions worsened, crew described a series of semi-knockdowns during which waves broke onto the cockpit. During the final severe knockdown crew saw the starboard windows explode, followed by an inundation of water below deck," it said.

The crew abandoned the vessel and were rescued from the sea by helicopter about two hours after it sank.

Maritime NZ northern compliance manager Neil Rowarth said regulations required that storm covers be on board - but not necessarily fitted - on international voyages from New Zealand in case they became needed.

He said the rules had since been amended so the covers would be required to be fitted to windows of a certain size.

"Under the amended regulations, storm coverings must now be fitted over windows for all windows more than 1852cm2 in area," the report said.

"The amendment thus avoids the need for crew to fit storm coverings at sea, which can be a difficult and dangerous undertaking, particularly in heavy seas."

Maritime NZ said although he died, the skipper was found to be instrumental in contributing to the survival of his crew throughout the ordeal.

It found that abandon ship procedures were discussed, but the crew said no written procedures document was posted on the bulkhead.

It said the yacht's liferaft was likely washed off the deck by waves, or the unit securing it was activated by pressure from the knockdown.

"When sighted by the Orion P3 crew, it appeared fully inflated. Regardless of the mechanism involved, this highlights the vulnerability of safety equipment stowed on an exposed deck during heavy seas."

The report said high maintenance and equipment standards were otherwise maintained on the vessel.

'Stu was particularly brave'

Before his death, Pedersen got a crew member who was on deck out from underwater and made sure two crew got into a liferaft.

Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie - also an old friend of Pedersen's - said he put others first.

"The report demonstrates that Stu was particularly brave in making sure that he did everything he could to save the lives of others on the boat."

Maritime New Zealand northern compliance manager Neil Rowarth hoped the regulation change would prevent similar tragedies.

"When New Zealand-registered pleasure vessels leave the country the inspection that they have to have before they leave will ensure that adequate storm covers are available and in place to prevent the windows breaking like they did on the Essence."

Bruce Carley had been out on the Essence with his dear friend Stuart previously - and said he took "extremely good care of his yacht and extremely good care of his crew".

Carley was looking after the Pedersens' cat while he was away on his Fiji voyage.

He said his old friend was a popular Tauranga community member and very caring.

"[He was] extremely generous and very diligent. There were no half measures with Stu, if he wanted something to be done, he would go absolutely all out to achieve it, and if he saw that somebody needed some help, he would give them every assistance available."

ACT leader David Seymour said the loss of Stuart Pedersen was still "very fresh" for party members.

He said he was a "great man with a gleam in his eye" and "gone too soon".

"I remember people in an internal Facebook group saying 'there's a yacht missing, it could be Stu'. And I thought 'not a chance that wouldn't happen to Stu'. And of course that's what tragedies are like, they suddenly become real. We feel a huge sense of loss and sadness."

Seymour hoped the report would bring the Pedersen family some closure and said his thoughts were with them.

Cruise itinerary

Arrive at Tuan Chau Marina after a 2.5-hour drive (if using our transfer). Embark on Essence Grand at noon. Enjoy a welcome drink at Cloud Nine restaurant while the cruise manager gives a short briefing about safety and cruise.

Dinner is served in the Dining on the Bay restaurant. After dinner, you can try squid fishing, playing poker, ordering a favorite cocktail from the varied menu, and watching the night scenery. Overnight onboard.

Meals included: Lunch, Dinner

Start a new day with a Taichi session on the top deck. Enjoy light breakfast in the restaurant or in your private cabin. The next stop is Luon Cave - a tranquil area for taking a sampan boat rowed by a local.

Check out time at reception, then enjoy the brunch buffet while the vessel cruises back to the harbor. Disembarkation at around 10:45 am.

Start a new day with a Taichi session on sundeck followed by light breakfast with tea, coffee, and pastries. At 8:30, Day cruise picks you up and starts cruising to Lan Ha Bay - an extension of Halong Bay. The day boat drops anchor at Dark - Bright Cave for kayaking. This is one of the most beautiful and tranquil areas in Lan Ha Bay.

A hearty Vietnamese lunch is served on the Day cruise. Take a rest while the boat continues to cruise to Ba Trai Dao Beach. Here you can sunbathe on the untouched beach or indulge in the crystal clear water of the charming bay. At 13:30, the day boat returns to Halong Bay. On the way back, drop by a local pearl farm and learn about the farming process of the pearl in Halong. The day trip ends at around 15:45 and you come back to La Siesta Superyacht to freshen up, relax in your cabin, or join onboard activities with new passengers.

A brand new dinner is served in Light House Restaurant. Free time for squid fishing, Cigar & poker house, boarding games, etc. Overnight onboard.

Luxurious boat with a bunch of modern facilities. The activities were diverse. No time to be bored during the stay. The pool was beautiful. The room was incredible. Halong Bay was amazing, although it was a bit crowded. We will suggest Essence Grand Cruise.

Great activities. Delicious food. Wonderful view. The cabin was elegant and clean. The large glass window and balcony were excellent for watching the bay.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Meet The Black Men Who Launched Tulum’s Most In Demand Yacht Charter Service

If it looks like everyone on your feed in search of a socially-distant retreat is vacationing in Tulum right now, it’s because they are. The Mexican retreat destination has quickly become one of the most attractive destinations for Black American tourists. What initially was sought out as a place of peace and refuge within the craziness of the pandemic for William Lee and Jon Roberts when they traveled to Tulum nearly six months ago quickly became home to their thriving business venture.

Lee, a tech industry founder, and one of the minds behind Socionado , and Roberts, a hospitality industry veteran and curator of MelaninTulum , met by chance, as part of the growing expat community. That meeting between two like-minded strangers evolved into the premiere yacht rental business that has serviced the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Trey Songz, among other celebrities, influencers and tourists.

Offering a fleet of affordable luxury yachts, ranging from 51’ to 80’, co-founders Lee, Roberts and head of partnerships Ryan Fletcher have made a Yacht Club Company experience synonymous with having a good time in Tulum, and the buzz around their business is only growing. For ESSENCE, Lee speaks with ESSENCE about the Yacht Club concept, plans for expansion, and why Tulum has stolen the hearts (and Instagram feeds) of Black travelers.

These Black Men Launched Tulum’s Most In Demand Yacht Charter Service During The Pandemic

What makes the Yacht Club Company experience different, outside of its geographic location?

Our specialized routes, our alcohol options, our yacht experiences, our events and our food menu. We’ve created premium experiences that cater to POC because we understand what our people want. We knew we were filling a huge void and it’s amazing to see the support we’ve garnered from the traveling Black community.

An example of a unique event that we’re hosting is our Valentine’s day event. We’ve taken a different approach with this particular event by only allowing “singles” in Tulum to attend. We’re calling it “Singles only.” At Yacht Club, we plan to continue to develop these fun and creative experiences. Our team members, Ryan Fletcher and Jon Curry, have hospitality backgrounds and they lead the way with curating our unique experiences.

Why was it important for you to bring the Yacht Club concept to Tulum?

When I first traveled to Tulum in June of 2020, I quickly fell in love with the culture, food and the people of the Yucatan Peninsula. When I began to explore the tourist areas closer to the beach, I realized that most of the experiences were curated for white Americans. Black travelers spend over 1 billion dollars per year, yet many travel destinations don’t feel the need to cater to our crowd. We are now changing that and yachting experiences were the first on our list in Tulum.

In the midst of a global pandemic, what sparked the desire for you both to move to Mexico?

Like many others, the quarantine was weighing on me mentally. I needed a get away and Tulum was always on my bucket list. When my good friend Bianca was able to get into Tulum, I booked my ticket the next day. My mind was made up.

What are your plans to expand Yacht Club Company?

We plan to build a membership program for traveling people of color. Our membership program would include exclusive events, access to premier locations and discounted/vip access to our hotel and restaurant partners. What we’re accomplishing in Tulum is the model for what we plan to do in many other locations around the world. We want to be the Soho house for yachting and premium experiences globally. This is just the beginning!

How does this experience impact the local Tulum community, if at all?

We’ve partnered with H20sun Cruises, the biggest fleet of yachts in Puerto Aventuras, who helps with our operations and the management of the sea vessels. Most of the employees at H20 are locals and the company was very close to laying off many staff members during the pandemic. It’s been incredible for us to give people in the local Tulum community steady employment through the influx of customers we were able to provide and we hope to continue to give locals many more opportunities.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. Her hobbies include Latin dancing, snowboard and yoga.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2008, Amadeus offers guest accommodation for up to 6 guests in 3 suites comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin and one twin cabin. There are 4 beds in total, including 1 queen, 1 double and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 2 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Powered by twin MAN engines, she comfortably cruises at 22 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 35 knots with a range of up to 250 nautical miles.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
