TURKISH GULETS

The Most Popular Type Of Traditional Yacht For The "Blue Cruise" Is The Gulet. The traditional Turkish Gulet is a handmade vessel crafted from wood by highly skilled master craftsmen. Also known as motor sailors, Gulets are extremely comfortable and ideal for long sea voyages as well as inshore coastal trips. The origin of Gulets can be traced back to the Bodrum area in Turkey but the growth of a demanding market led to their construction being started in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye and Istanbul. High quality and durable wood such as teak, maun and iroko are chiefly used to construct beautiful and sturdy Gulets.

What is a Turkish Gulet?

A Turkish gulet is more than just a boat; it’s a vessel steeped in history and tradition, offering an unforgettable experience on the waters of Turkey and beyond. These handcrafted wooden boats have become synonymous with luxury and comfort, making them a popular choice for cruising the beautiful coastlines of the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Adriatic seas.

Gulet Types

The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "Blue Cruise" is the gulet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded stern area which is well-suited for comfortable eating and lounging. Gulets usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 55 meters and they accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 cabins with private shower and WC.

3. Tirhandil

It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally measure between 11 to 24 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 10 persons in 3 to 5 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

The Origins of the Turkish Gulet

The Turkish gulet originated from the southwestern coast of Turkey, particularly in the Bodrum and Marmaris regions. Historically, these boats were used for fishing and trading, thanks to their sturdy build and the ability to sail smoothly in various sea conditions. Over time, these traditional vessels have evolved into luxurious yachts, specifically designed to provide the ultimate sailing experience.

Opting for a Gulet charter offers a unique blend of tradition, luxury, and adventure. Whether you are cruising along the Turkish Riviera or exploring the Greek Islands, a gulet cruise promises an unforgettable journey.

The Unique Design of a Gulet Boat

A gulet boat is instantly recognizable by its broad beam and rounded aft. Unlike typical sailboats, gulet sailboats are characterized by their spacious decks, providing ample room for relaxation and sunbathing. The traditional design of a gulet includes two or three masts, although they are often motor-sailers, relying on both engines and sails.

The wooden construction of gulets is another distinguishing feature. Skilled craftsmen meticulously build these boats, using high-quality wood like teak and mahogany. This craftsmanship not only ensures durability but also gives each gulet a unique and classic appearance.

Exploring Turkey’s Coastline on a Gulet Sailboat

A gulet sailboat is the ideal way to explore Turkey’s stunning coastline. The Turkish Riviera, often referred to as the Turquoise Coast, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, secluded coves, and ancient ruins. Sailing on a Turkish gulet allows you to access these hidden gems, many of which are inaccessible by land.

Popular Routes:

  • Bodrum to Gökova: This classic route takes you through the Gökova Gulf, known for its breathtaking landscapes and tranquil waters. You’ll visit charming coastal towns, swim in secluded bays, and explore the ancient city of Knidos.
  • Marmaris to Fethiye: This route offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage. You’ll sail through the stunning Gulf of Fethiye, visit the famous Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz, and explore the ancient rock tombs of Dalyan.

Göcek Islands: The twelve islands of Göcek are a sailor’s paradise. With numerous anchorages, clear waters, and lush greenery, this area is perfect for those seeking a peaceful and scenic cruise.

What is a Gulet

The Gulet, classic Turkish boat, is a traditional wooden motor sailor powered mainly by engine. It's the heir of those ancient fishing boats that sailed across the Aegean Sea hundreds of years ago. Today the purpose of sailing this wonderful Gulet had been changed by transforming it to a mini floating hotel that serves the most scrumptious cuisine to its guests and will offer them the best hospitality experience by its crew. Any Gulet has an insurance cover and safety equipment such as life jackets, life rafts and emergency kits, according to the standard of and recommended regulations of its country and also subject to periodic inspections by relevant authorities to ensure safety and comfort of the guests onboard.

Spending the holiday on a Gulet

Once you enjoy your breakfast you will spend your time sailing to reach out spectacular tranquil bays, scenic beauty of islands with fabulous coastlines and sites of historical values. Throughout the day you will sail near coast lines for about two or three hours. You can enjoy the perfect relaxation either from sunbathing on the deck or a swim on the warm waters . Our cooks will indulge your taste buds with delicious dishes for the lunch served on the spacious table of stern. After lunch if you feel that it’s your time of the day to have a small siesta, your cosy air conditioned gulet cabin will be ready or under the shades of awnings will be the best spot. A ketch gulet is a specific type of gulet that is distinguished by its sail configuration. The term “ketch” refers to the number and arrangement of masts and sails on the vessel. A ketch gulet typically has two masts: a mainmast located towards the center of the vessel and a shorter mizzen mast situated aft, closer to the stern.

The distinguishing feature of a ketch gulet is the presence of a mizzen mast, which sets it apart from other gulets that may have only a single mast or multiple masts of different configurations. The mizzen mast on a ketch gulet is typically smaller and positioned behind the mainmast.

The sail setup on a ketch gulet generally includes triangular or quadrilateral sails. The mainmast carries the main sail, while the mizzen mast supports the mizzen sail. The sail area of the main sail is typically larger than that of the mizzen sail.

The presence of the mizzen mast on a ketch gulet offers several advantages. It allows for more flexible sail handling and control, as the mizzen sail can be used to balance the vessel and provide additional propulsion options. The mizzen sail can be utilized to improve stability, especially in challenging wind conditions or when maneuvering.

Ketch gulets are known for their elegant appearance and balanced sail performance. The combination of the mainmast and mizzen mast allows for efficient sailing and comfortable cruising experiences. Additionally, ketch gulets often provide ample deck space and comfortable accommodations, making them popular choices for those seeking a classic sailing experience with modern comfort.

When considering a yacht charter or gulet rental, if you specifically prefer the sail configuration of a ketch gulet, it’s advisable to communicate your preferences to the charter company or broker. They can provide information on the availability of ketch gulets in their fleet and help you find the right vessel that suits your desires for a memorable sailing adventure.

Introduction

A yacht charter gulet, or simply a gulet, is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing vessel that has been used for centuries to transport goods along the coast of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. These vessels have a distinctive design with a broad beam, rounded stern, and a flat bow. They are equipped with two or three masts and have large sails that make them perfect for cruising and exploring the beautiful coastlines of Turkey and neighboring countries.

The history of gulets dates back to the Ottoman era when they were mainly used for fishing and the transportation of goods. In the early 20th century, gulets started to become popular among tourists as a means of transportation and accommodation during their holidays along the coast of Turkey. Over the years, the design of gulets has evolved, and they are now equipped with modern amenities to provide a comfortable and luxurious experience for travelers.

Today, gulet yacht charters are increasingly popular among travelers who want to explore the stunning coastline of Turkey and its neighboring countries, such as Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro. What is the history of the Turkish Gulet?

Ancient Greek Freight Ship

Boat construction in Southwestern Anatolia started even before antiquity. Lands surrounding the Aegean Sea were ideal for early human civilizations, and as a result, were the native habitat for boat construction in the ancient era.

The shipbuilding tradition of the region encompassed many civilizations and nations throughout history, including, but not limited to Carians, Minoans, Ionians, Lycians, Ancient Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, Ottomans, and ultimately, the Republic of Turkey.

North American Schooner

As the speedy and versatile Schooners started becoming more and more popular around the late 1800s, these types of vessels were also adopted by the Ottomans in Southwestern Anatolia. Locally they were renowned for versatility as freight, fishing, and sponge-diving boats. Over time they were modified to fit the local needs and called Gulet or Uskuna .

Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı ve yazar arkadaşları

When the exiled Turkish writer Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli (also known as the Fisherman of Halicarnassus) and his friends started using gulets for yacht holidays, they started calling them “ blue cruise “. These blue cruises quickly became popular among the intelligentsia, and over time, throughout the world as well.

By the 1970s, gulets were mostly used as yachts, and over time their designs were modified to have even more space for leisure. As a result of the increasing demand for gulet cruises, shipyards and workshops responsible for building gulets in the region greatly increased, and by the 1980s blue cruises became significantly more affordable.

Using of Gulets Nowadays

Modern Gulet

Contemporary gulets come equipped with modern engines and equipment to ensure comfortable and safe voyages and still retain their classic wooden design. The reputation of gulets, which is the ideal type of boat for summer holidays, has spread around the world since the 1970s. Today, they are not just popular in Turkey but in Greece, Croatia, Italy, and France as well. You can see these authentic yachts all over the eastern Mediterranean, whether you are in Split, Dubrovnik, Greek islands, or Bodrum.

What are the Gulet Types?

Karpuzkıç Gulet

Karpuzkic gulets are the most common type. The most noticeable characteristic of Karpuzkic gulets is their rounded stern and overall oval design. These features of Karpuzkic gulets allow them to stay comfortable during bad weather.

Aynakıç Gulet

Aynakic gulets feature a design that prioritizes spacious cabin size above all else. Unlike karpuzkic, aynakic gulets have a flat stern and overall blocky design. While this causes the boat to be less seaworthy during storms and bad weather, this won’t be an issue during the holiday season.

Tirhandil Gulet

Tirhandil gulets have a form unique to the Aegean Sea. Unlike karpuzkic and aynakic gulets, tirhandils have a long and narrow stern. They represent the oldest form of gulets. Compared to other types of gulets, they’re smaller and have modest-sized cabins, however, they’re also more seaworthy.

How Many Meters are the Gulets?

Gulets can be two or three-masted, range in length from 12 meters (39 feet) to over 60 meters (196 feet) , and tend to have generous cabin sizes. They are universally equipped with diesel engines and usually are not properly rigged for sailing.

Gulets are a type of sailing vessel that typically have two or three masts and come in a variety of sizes. The length of a gulet can range from 12 meters (39 feet) to over 60 meters (196 feet), making them a versatile option for travelers looking to explore the beautiful coastlines of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.

While gulets are equipped with sails, they are not always rigged for sailing, as they are often powered by diesel engines. However, the sails do add to the overall aesthetic of the vessel and can be used in certain conditions.

One of the advantages of gulets is that they tend to have generous cabin sizes, which provides a comfortable and luxurious experience for travelers. The cabins are often equipped with modern amenities, such as air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, and can accommodate couples, families, and larger groups.

Overall, gulets are a popular option for yacht charter holidays, as they offer a unique and unforgettable experience for those looking to explore the stunning coastlines of Turkey and neighboring countries.

What Material is the Gulet Made of?

Gulets (also known as motor sailors ) are usually made of thick, strong, plank cuts. Most of these timber cuts come in the form of lumber or veneer board. In addition, the roofs of gulets are usually made of wood.

Gulets are typically made of thick, strong, plank cuts of timber. This timber is carefully selected for its strength and durability, as gulets are designed to withstand the rough seas and unpredictable weather conditions of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. The timber used for gulets can come in the form of lumber or veneer board, depending on the design and style of the vessel.

In addition to the timber construction, the roofs of gulets are also typically made of wood. This provides a cohesive aesthetic for the vessel, as well as added protection from the elements. The wood used for the roofs is usually treated to resist water damage and other forms of wear and tear.

While timber is the most common material used for gulet construction, there are some modern gulets that are made from other materials, such as fiberglass or aluminum. These materials offer certain advantages over timber, such as being lighter and more durable. However, traditional wooden gulets remain popular among travelers due to their classic design and unique character.

Overall, the construction material of a gulet is an important factor to consider when choosing a yacht charter holiday. The durability and strength of the vessel are essential for a safe and comfortable journey, while the aesthetic and design add to the overall experience.

What is a Gulet Vacation?

A gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing vessel that has two or three masts with sails and is known for its spacious decks and comfortable interiors. Yachts, on the other hand, are larger vessels made of modern materials such as fiberglass or aluminum and are designed for luxury and comfort. They often have amenities such as swimming pools, jacuzzis, and multiple decks. While both offer a unique experience, the main differences are in their size, design, and intended use.

Gulet charters offer a more authentic and traditional sailing experience compared to yachts. They can sail in shallower waters, which allows them to anchor closer to the shore, in secluded bays, and more intimate coves, providing a unique view of the coastline. Moreover, gulet charters are often a more affordable option than yacht charters.

What is Gulet and How to Charter One

Gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel meant for comfortable cruising. The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian word "guletta" or the French word "goullette". This schooner type of vessel is used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of the 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of the 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.

Although charter gulets do sail when the winds allow, they are most of the time propelled by engine power . They are configured as motorsailers, with diesel engines to provide primary power, while sails offer additional strength.

Gulets have a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, the main foremast and a secondary mast aft. Their broad beam provides plenty of deck space and spacious cabins below decks.

Gulet Charter

Gulet Charter Types and Services

Gulets come in many sizes , ranging from small 15-meter-long craft to luxurious 33-meter air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury imaginable. Charter gulets offer hotel-like accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and enough storage for all your luggage. Charter gulets also have plenty of communal space - a large salon with a bar, lots of deck space for sunbathing and other activities, as well as an outside dining and lounge area at the stern. Gulet's stern deck is broad with a wide cushioned bench perfect for lounging , and a large table for games, drinks and meals. The salon is spacious and high enough for somewhat taller guests, with enough table space to seat all travellers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Charter gulets have an experienced and professional crew that comprises a captain, sailors, and a chef. Their job is to take care of your safety and provide you with comfort during your cruise, while the chef will prepare you fresh meals with high-quality local ingredients.

There are two gulet charter types - a private gulet charter and a cabin charter.

A private gulet charter offers you ultimate comfort and privacy , as well as high flexibility regarding the menu, itinerary, and provisioning. A charter gulet's crew is wholly dedicated to you and your party.

A cabin charter is a more economical and more convenient alternative to chartering the entire boat since you do not have to have company to charter a cabin . This is a pleasurable way of vacationing that allows you to meet different people . However, you do not have complete freedom since the itineraries and ports of embarkation and disembarkation are fixed and cannot be altered.
