A Sequim Treasure: The John Wayne Marina
You ever want to have a picnic, but you don’t want to drive far? You don’t have a lot of gas in the tank? It’s warm and sunny, but you need a little shade? Like being near the water? Well, for residents of Sequim, Washington, all those things are available right around the corner. About a mile from our home on the east edge of Sequim sits the John Wayne Marina.
Now, a marina for a boater means one thing. For a picnicker, it means something else. And not all marinas are good for both. But we’re lucky. The John Wayne Marina was laid out as a marina but also a park. That means beautiful scenery, lovely shade trees, benches, tables, a stream running through it, a beach to walk on at low tide, and close parking. It means a built-in trail to exercise your pet. It also means a point of land beautifully laid out with plenty of shade and an open space to hold weddings and other ceremonies.
Named for ‘The Duke’
Actor John Wayne (yes, ‘The Duke’) once owned a private yacht that he used for family vacations, many of those vacations in or near the Pacific Northwest. His yacht, 136-feet long and named Wild Goose , was a converted US Navy Minesweeper built and launched in Seattle in 1942. Following the war,
Wild Goose Today, photo by Abhishake4
Wayne bought it from a Seattle businessman in 1965 and took his last trip on Wild Goose in 1979, two months before he died. Wild Goose currently resides in Southern California as the flagship for Hornblower Cruises & Events.
While traveling the Puget Sound and the Straits of Juan de Fuca, the Wayne family acquired acreage along the western shore of Sequim Bay. After the actor’s death, 22 acres were donated by the family specifically for the creation of the John Wayne Marina; the marina was constructed in 1985 and is owned and operated by the Port of Port Angeles. The remaining acres were turned by the family into an RV park and rental cabins across from the marina.
Meet and greet
For those of us who are not currently boat owners, the marina is a beautiful place to enjoy, to sit and contemplate the beauty of nature, to exercise our dogs, and to meet and greet nice folks who come here from just about everywhere. It’s a place where everyone smiles and says, “Hi.”
When I drive down to the marina, the dogs get excited as soon as they realize where we are going. They love the marina. Good smells there and lots of other dogs to meet. While my poodles are saying hello in their own way, we humans do too. And walking beneath the trees with a slight breeze is several degrees cooler than at home.
Always something going on
The marina is a busy place. In the summer, there are fishing derbies that bring numerous trucks pulling trailered fishing craft, and they fill the parking lots and W. Sequim Bay Road outside. The launch ramps are busy as boats slide into the water and later in the day are retrieved. When it’s crabbing time, boats leave with empty crab traps and return later filled with crab. Refrigerator trucks wait in the parking lots to take the fresh crab to markets and restaurants.
For boaters and non-boaters alike, Dockside Grill is a “main attraction.” Open for lunch and dinner, Wednesdays through Sundays, the grill offers great views of both the bay and the marina and seafood delicacies served with panache. A perfect place for that birthday celebration, anniversary party, or impress-your-guest dining event.
The John Wayne Marina, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Rd., is easily reached via W. Sequim Bay Road, a left turn off E. Washington St., or via the Whitefeather Way exit off the 101 Highway about a mile east of town. If you are passing through Sequim, don’t miss it. If you live here, summer’s here. Time for a picnic!

Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama
For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless, Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.
Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.
For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?
For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.
It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?
I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.
The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?
I like such music and I think it suits our city.
In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?
I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.

Article body
Conquerors of AFC Ajax in the UEFA Champions League play-offs, FC Rostov will look to claim a second Dutch scalp when they host Group D rivals PSV Eindhoven on matchday two.
Match background
Rostov • The group stage newcomers had a chastening start on matchday one when beaten 5-0 at FC Bayern München.
• Rostov had never faced Dutch opposition before August when they got the better of Ajax in the play-off round, winning 4-1 at home in the second leg to complete a 5-2 aggregate triumph. Sardar Azmoun, Aleksandr Erokhin, Christian Noboa and Dmitri Poloz got the goals while Fedor Kudryashov was sent off.
• This is the ninth European home game Rostov have contested in their history – including their 1999 and 2000 UEFA Intertoto Cup campaigns.
PSV • PSV are still seeking their first points after a 1-0 home loss to Club Atlético de Madrid on matchday one.
• Phillip Cocu's men failed to win on their travels in last season's UEFA Champions League (D2 L2).
• The 1988 European Cup winners are seeking a first away win in the UEFA Champions League proper since Jefferson Farfán earned them a 1-0 victory at PFC CSKA Mosvka in the 2007/08 group stage.
• PSV were 3-0 down inside the opening 36 minutes of their 3-2 defeat at PFC CSKA Moskva on matchday two of last season's group stage. Maxime Lestienne pulled two goals back in the second half.
• PSV have lost on their last four visits to Russia, including two defeats in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League – they lost 1-0 at FC Dinamo Moskva in the group stage, then 3-0 at FC Zenit in the round of 32.
• Their overall record away to Russian opposition is W1 D0 L4.
Coach and player links • As an FC Barcelona player, Cocu beat FC Lokomotiv Moskva away (3-1) and at home (1-0) in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage.
• Noboa played in the Dinamo Mosvka team that beat PSV home and away in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League.
• Olexandr Zinchenko scored his first senior goal playing for FC Ufa in a 2-1 home league defeat by Rostov in July 2015.
• César Navas's FC Rubin suffered 2010/11 UEFA Europa League elimination against FC Twente in the round of 32, Luuk de Jong scoring the first goal in the Dutch side's 2-0 first-leg victory in Russia (agg 4-2).
• Simon Poulsen helped AZ Alkmaar beat FC Anji in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League round of 16 ( 1-0 home , 0-0 away ).
• Andrés Guardado won 2-0 at FC Kuban Krasnodar with Valencia CF in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage. It was the Mexican's second visit to Russia after a 3-0 loss at CSKA in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage with RC Deportivo La Coruña.
Match facts
Rostov • Kudryashov is available having served a one-game ban on matchday one.
• Rostov have lost four of their last six matches in all competitions.
• On 21 September, a reserve side went down 4-0 at first division leaders FC Dinamo Moskva in the last 32 of the Russian Cup, Papa Gueye scoring an own goal.
• Rostov are 24 games unbeaten at home in all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat by FC Terek Grozny in May 2015.
PSV • Davy Pröpper's third goal in three days sealed a 3-1 win at SBV Excelsior on Saturday. It was PSV's 13th straight away victory – an Eredivisie record.
• Five days after the visit of Atlético, PSV suffered their first Eredivisie reverse since 20 March, losing 1-0 at home to Feyenoord.
• Pröpper struck twice as PSV returned to winning ways on 21 September, beating visiting Roda JC 4-0 in the Dutch Cup first round.
• Siem de Jong and Sam Lammers made their PSV debuts against Roda.
• Jürgen Locadia is expected to be out until the end of October with a groin injury sustained against FC Groningen on 28 August.
