I chartered a 40' power boat for weekend cruise to the Gulf Islands. The vessel was beautifully presented, and the service was friendly and efficient. Booking, departure and arrival went smoothly. The briefing on the vessel was efficient and thorough. After reading other Yelp reviews I was concerned whether my deposit would be returned fully and on time. It was. The funds were back in my account within 7 days. My only criticism is that parking is difficult to find on Granville Island. There is short term parking within 20m of the dock for loading and unloading but multi-day parking is harder to find and is a 5mins walk away. However, this is not something within Blue Pacific's control. I'm happy to recommend them to anyone. Five stars.

Both my wife and I are experienced, life-long boaters, and we have owned and chartered many boats over the years. We have never experienced anything as poorly run, deceptive, and frustrating as this operator. As we had to travel to Vancouver with friends to pick up the boat (Meu Segundo), we were "committed" to continuing the charter, despite some immediate warning signs from the moment we boarded. The boat was poorly cleaned, the galley was filthy (food splatter all over the interior of the microwave, mould in the fridge, etc.), and virtually all storeage areas were stuffed with the owners' gear. As we ultimately had to sue this company to have our damage deposit returned, I have documentation listing over thirty deficiencies with this boat, including a stripped anchor windlass, defective VHF radios, pathetic engine performance (nowhere near what is reported on the website), no lighting in the engine room, a leaking water line, pathetic battery storage capacity, etc., etc., etc. Additional to these problems, the bow-thruster stopped working mid-trip. It was this problem that, when I mentioned it to the fleet manager, Blue Pacific used as a pretext to hold back our damage deposit of over $5000. Despite repeated and escalated letters demanding its return, Blue Pacific refused to respond. At significant additional cost (and four trips to the Vancouver courts) we ultimately won a court-ordered return of our damage deposit and a 1/3 refund of our charter costs. There are several excellent charter companies in British Columbia, this is definitely NOT one of them

We charted a 40 Carver in September 2015. We loved the yacht. It ran well and performed beautifully. However, on returning the boat, they did not have a diver available to check the bottom for damage. Later they said there was damage and kept our $5000 cdn. There was no damage but we can't prove a negative. Be ware.

Our security deposit terms and conditions are very clear. We have up to 10 days to refund the deposit. The reason we require that amount of time to refund is we contract out to an independent dive company for all underwater inspections. All of our customers are allowed to see the dive inspection reports from that company. The dive reports are date stamped and can be compared with our bookings calendar which can be compared to our check-ins. During a check-in we record engine hours. So you can compare engine hours to dive reports and know exactly who caused the damage. We have been in business since 1982 and we have been growing because we run a good business with many repeat customers and positive word of mouth advertising. The last thing we ever want to do is keep a damage deposit.

If you consider to rent a boat there you should take great care and be very, very cautious! I rented the 28 ft Bayliner. As we checked out the boat had some defects which we mentioned but which we did not write down since we were told that they were known and the most important thing is the drive and the propeller anyway (!). In fact the check-out was very quick and covered only the main items like hull and propeller. We never thought of checking the faucets since we did not intend to use the bathroom at all. How naive! When we brought the boat back nobody was there to check us out, so we left the keys in the mailbox. A couple of days later I received an e-mail stating that I broke the faucet and they will deduct $350 from my security deposit. I protested but they insisted that it must have been me since it was ok the last time and now it is broken. My argument that we didn't check it out and we didn't use it was useless. Also that the guys cleaning the boat or anybody else could have done it. Their argument was, that after the last charter it was ok - whenever the last charter was... They didn't even bother to call me back or send me some pics of the "broken faucet". I didn't even get an invoice. Just a mail stating $350 for the faucet including labour. So if you consider renting a boat down there be very, very careful. Check everything! Don't let them tell you "the depth sounder is not working but we don't have to write it down since we know it" - which happened to me (they didn't charge me for that at least...). Don't be so naive like I was! I for sure will never charter anything with them again. Thomas R.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The Sailing Courses of Blue Pacific Yachting

The Blue Pacific Yachting Marina del Rey sailing school offers a variety of classes for all ages and experience levels. The school also offers full-service boat charters and rentals.

Professional Instructors

The best way to learn how to sail is by taking an introductory course with a professional instructor. The instructors at Blue Pacific Yachting have decades of experience sailing in Southern California and around the world. They are all certified USCG licensed captains who have been working in the industry for years. They can teach you everything from basic sailing terminology and techniques to advanced techniques, advanced navigation skills, and anchoring during their time at Blue Pacific Yachting.

The courses 

The courses will last about three hours and include a tour of the marina’s facilities. You’ll also get a chance to try out some of the boats on offer, including catamarans and monohulls, that are great for both beginners and experienced sailors alike. They offer both private and group lessons. The sailing classes are perfect for beginners and experienced sailors alike because they offer classes that range from one-day seminars to week-long courses. 

If you’re going to be in Marina Del Rey for an extended period, you might want to consider renting one of their boats for an entire day or longer. This way, you’ll get plenty of practice time while enjoying the beautiful scenery along the coast of California!

 Beginning Sailing – ASA 101

Beginning Sailing – ASA 101

Beginning sailing class 101 starts with basic terminology and concepts, the building blocks of solid, nautical knowledge and skills. You and your crew will use what you’ve learned to sail the 25-foot boat with little supervision. You and your fellow novices will take control of the sailboat and sail it efficiently and safely from one location to another. 

By the end of the 14-hour sailing course, you’ll get the novice label. If you make it, you will be awarded with an ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification by the instructor. This prestigious achievement will demonstrate to the world that you have earned the right to call yourself a sailor. 

Beginning/Intermediate Sailing (ASA) 101/103

You will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to sail a modern, mid-sized cruising yacht. Learn to sail in a supportive and safe atmosphere under the skilled guidance of our experienced instructors.

0 to Hero ASA 101-104 Classes

0 to Hero ASA 101-104

Learn to sail on one of our Merit 25 keelboats, then progress to our Catalina 27 and finally to our Jeanneau 44. The price includes 5 nights on a new Jeanneau 440, a linen package (new bedding and towels), a high-quality experience, 4 days of provisioning, and ASA 101-104 certificates. 2 confidence sails (one for a 25-foot sailboat and one for a 36-foot vessel) plus a complimentary extended on-the-water check-in prior to the first multi-day charter (confidence sails and extended checkout must be redeemed within 90-days).

Intermediate Sailing 103

In Intermediate Sailing, you will continue your knowledge of terms and technologies. You must now know the parts of the boat on which you rely for food, water, and shelter, in addition to protection.

You’ll learn about weather and navigation, as well as how to apply what you’ve learned to trip planning. Beginning Sailing was a day-long class. Intermediate Sailing students begin to learn about night sailing. Prevention and response to onboard emergencies become increasingly vital as you progress on a sailboat.

ASA 103’s ultimate purpose is to teach students how to live on a sailboat. You will most likely start by staying on the yacht for a weekend or a week. You’ll soon discover that the amount of time you spend sailing and the destinations you visit are only limited if you want them to be. ASA 103 is certainly a doorway to a new world.

Catalina Island Sailing ASA 104

Gain confidence by provisioning the boat; calculating compass courses; using electronics (GPS, chart plotter, depth sounder, knot meter, Autopilot) to navigate to your destination; steering the boat; trimming the sails; learning to use and care for the roller furling genoa; standing watch; setting an anchor, picking up a mooring, towing and using the dinghy and outboard; and troubleshooting the boat systems. Your instructor will talk about night sailing, strong weather, and emergencies at sea, and will try to pass on years of local cruising experience to you.  

Catalina Island & Catamaran Sailing ASA 104/114

This one-day course provides students with the knowledge and practical experience required to sail catamarans. Students are taught close-quarters maneuvering, anchoring, and docking methods specific to multi-hull sailing yachts.

The many forms of docking in these full-day sailing lessons will go over by the instructor. You will learn how to handle the breeze and currents, as well as the many ways to land safely on a mid-sized cruise boat.

You’ll have plenty of practice pulling into a slip, landing on a lengthy dock, and approaching a mooring from all angles and conditions.

Where They Sail

Blue Pacific Yachting sailing destinations include Marina del Rey, Malibu, Palos Verdes, Catalina Island, and the Channel Islands. January through March is an ideal time to see migrating gray whales along the California coast, with whales traveling both northward and southward. Dolphin sightings are very common year-round as well from Marina del Rey to Catalina Island. With an average high of 66 – 80 degrees, we’re an idea sailing destination 12 months a year. The Marina del Rey marina is North America’s largest man-made small-craft harbor and is home to approximately 5,000 boats.

What They Teach

Blue Pacific Yachting offers ASA 101, 103, 104, 114, and 118 courses. We also offer RPBA (ASA certified powerboating courses) as well. We offer group courses, private courses, custom training, company events, team building events, multi-day courses to Catalina Island and the Channel Islands, family courses (adults + kids), spinnaker training, and intro to racing courses. Lastly, we also hold instructor level training: 201, 203, 204, 214, and 218.

Meet Their Instructors

Blue Pacific Yachting is lucky to have some of the best instructors in the industry.  We have a great variety of new and long-term instructors (10+ years!), some that spend half of the year living on their own boats in Mexico, and they all have a wealth of information to share with their students. Here are a few:

Captain James – US Naval Academy Instructor, Certified Marine Electrician, Certified Diesel Engine Mechanic, USCG Master License with Auxiliary Sail, 25 Ton. Certified to teach ASA 101, 103, 104, 114, 118. James’ diverse experience, accomplishments and education provide relevant resources to further his passion for the promotion and safety of the Yacht community and industry. When not teaching, you can find James cruising or racing his Wauquiez Centurion 40S.

Captain Greg  – USCG 50 Ton Captain’s License with Sailing Endorsement. Certified to teach ASA 101, 103, 104. Greg has owned and skippered a variety of boats over the years culminating with SCOUT, a Jeanneau SO 52.2 which has been his home for the last eleven years while cruising the West Coast of Mexico and the Sea of Cortzs from November to June. He returns to Marina del Rey for the summer and fall.  

Captain Frank  – USCG 50 Ton Captain’s License with Sailing Endorsement. Certified to teach ASA 101, 103, 104, 105 & 114. Frank started his career flying first as a US Navy Helicopter pilot, then a TWA MD-80 and now he is a freelance Captain on a 767. Frank has sailed all over the world and currently owns a Lagoon 38 in La Paz, Mexico. 

Captain Fran  – USCG 50 Ton Captain’s License with Sailing Endorsement. Certified to teach ASA 101, 103, 104, 110, 114. Fran volunteers as a sailing instructor for the Boy & Girls Club (summer and after school sailing programs) and for the Women’s Sailing Association. She is also an avid racer, conducts boat deliveries along the west coast and into Mexico, and has won the David Poe Service Award from the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs (ASMBYC). The award is presented for outstanding contributions of time and/or talent to yachting beyond the recipient’s normal obligation.

I was very disappointed in Blue Pacific's handling of selling my boat. There was an extreme lack of communication with our broker when we actually had a prospective buyer of our boat. Our broker also seemed to side much more with the prospective buyer rather than with us (the seller), with whom the broker's commission actually comes from. They also snuck in a contract extension when we did a price reduction, just to sucker us in for a longer contract before we could switch to a broker who would actually do good work for us. There is a reason Blue Pacific Yacht Sales does not have a large name in selling boats, and I would stay well away from them if you plan on selling your boat. There are much better options out there...
