Pershing 8X review: Italian stallion strikes a fine balance between space and speed

Luxury and engine power both demand acres of space, but performance boats need to be slender. Can Pershing’s latest creation pull off the ultimate spatial compromise?

The proof of the Pershing is in the handling. Few shipyards set quite so much store in their boats’ ability to corner with the kind of competence that raises the hairs on the back of your neck.

The trouble is, reputations can be lost as well as gained: just one new model whose talents are judged to be less than sparkling can undo all the respect so hard-won by its predecessors.

Pershing is not unique in this, of course. But it is unique in its efforts to yoke together high-tech sportsboat speed and handling with high-end Italian luxury. And it’s a task that is not getting any easier.

In its new Pershing 8X, the Ancona shipyard has faced up to the classic quandary that has exercised every yacht designer who has ever tried to get to grips with the problem of how to make a fast yacht luxurious – and vice versa.

Luxury means comfort, and comfort requires space. Performance means power, and power – big engines, big tanks – needs space too. But you can’t just make a hull that’s voluminous enough to accommodate all these conflicting demands, because performance hulls have to be slender, and high-volume hulls don’t handle.

Or so they say – it seems that Pershing’s designers now beg to differ. The Pershing 82 , which this new model seems destined to replace in the product range, was 18ft 1in (5.50m) in the beam. The 8X is a couple of feet longer but a full 14in wider, at 19ft 3in (5.86m).

That’s the sort of length-beam ratio you would expect to find in a family flybridge cruiser – except the Pershing 8X packs 5,276hp in its engineroom and has a pair of Top System surface drives sticking out at the back. This is not normal.

Size matters

The idea, of course, is to make the accommodation areas larger and more luxurious. The extra width is used to good effect on the main deck, where the saloon feels nice and wide even without compromising the side decks, as happened on the Pershing 82.

Perhaps the most spectacular improvement, however, is the cunningly concealed flybridge companionway inside that curved carbon coaming on the port side. The 82’s arrangement – a set of folding steps that dropped down from the deckhead – was less alliterative as well as less convenient.

Down below, the obvious place to look for extra width is in the gaps between the berths in the twin guest cabins. The berths themselves are also wider, as well as longer, and it’s the same story in the VIP and master suites . Headroom has been raised too.

The improved master suite layout in the Pershing 8X, making proper use of the visual qualities of an open, full-beam cabin, adds significantly to the sense of space on the lower deck. Like its predecessor, the 8X is available with a choice of one or two twin-berth guest cabins.

Significant extra width has the potential to create significant extra weight, which was obviously not an option in this case: the Pershing 8X simply had to perform at least as well as the 82, and there was no more horsepower available in the MTU 2000 series footprint.

So the superstructure is made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre, the mouldings are created from vacuum-infused epoxy resin instead of vinylester, and although a substantially bigger boat it comes out just 700kg heavier.

The hull form is a constant-deadrise, 20° deep-V – similar to the 82’s, with most of the extra beam going into wide chine flats that fill out amidships and carry on aft. So, in theory at least, the Pershing 8X will have the incisive seakeeping of a capable offshore boat , ironing out the chop, while extra lift from the broad chines should help with straight-line speed at the expense, perhaps, of cornering precision.

We put theory into practice on a balmy spring day off Fano, on the Italian Adriatic coast not far from Pershing’s Ancona shipyard. The new-generation 8X is loaded with electronic aids.

Surface-drive boats are often a handful for the helmsman – the racing boats for which they were originally designed had a two-person crew – and modern technology can ease the workload for leisure users, ensuring that drive trim is optimised for best speed and fuel consumption.

For the 8X, Pershing has worked with Xenta and Top System to produce a single-control interface that allows for joystick control at speeds up to 42 knots, automatic trim for the flaps and drive legs, and an automatic autopilot system that holds the heading without the need to engage the boat’s actual autopilot.

It works extremely well. So does the new hull shape. Pershing’s engineers explained that the extra lift from the chines helps not just with top speed, but also at transitional speeds between displacement and planing.

This phase of performance can be rather vague on surface-drive boats: a slight change in hull attitude or leg trim making a disproportionate contribution to boat speed, as the drives rise into thinner water, the props spin more quickly, and engine revs increase. You need to have your wits about you.

Plane sailing

On the Pershing 8X, this acceleration phase felt more predictable, although admittedly our speed still more than doubled between 1,500 and 2,000rpm. One tangible benefit of the extra lift is in low-speed planing. The boat was quite happy at 25 knots and 1,600rpm, although you won’t find that sweet spot going up the rev range. You have to decelerate to get there. All surface-drive boats have their idiosyncrasies.

With 400 more horsepower than its predecessor, slightly more weight and a lot more dynamic lift, our test 8X clocked an impressive two-way average of 48.3 knots in our sea trial – nearly two knots better than the similarly-loaded Pershing 82 we tested in 2012.

On a calm sea it was difficult to judge the quality of its seakeeping, but there were some firmer than expected impacts as we charged through our own wake at high speeds, which were probably down to those broad chines.

When it came to the boat’s driving experience, the 8X can certainly provide the superbly dramatic angles of heel in hard turns that Pershing aficionados love so much, when you have to look through the sunroof to see where you’re going.

It didn’t, perhaps, display quite the same razor-sharp tracking that has made these boats a byword for brilliant handling – but if you weren’t looking for flaws I doubt whether you’d notice any. This boat is powerful, fast and huge fun to drive.

It goes. It handles. And in spite of its unusually wide beam, and its uncharacteristically generous internal volume, it still feels like a proper Pershing where it counts – out at sea. With the 8X, the shipyard’s reputation is safe.

With two decks and a sportbridge, the GTX80 has a sprawling open layout that ensures guests feel connected to the sea. The main deck salon, for instance, has glazing that extends below the lateral walkways to ensure a view of the water even from the sofas. Another new development in the nearly full-beam saloon is the hybrid galley-bar, which connects the indoor lounge with the outdoor cockpit.

As for accommodation, the yacht is equipped with four comfy cabins that can sleep up to eight guests. It also has discreetly hidden crew quarters that can sleep two. The guest cabins are clad from top to bottom in sky-blue leather paneling and dotted with sculptural furniture, while the adjoining bathrooms are fitted with metallic lacquered panels. This contrast of finishes continues throughout the rest of the interior, with leather sofas in warm hues and cozy woods juxtaposing the colder metallic accents. Integrated lighting doubles as another striking design feature.

The exterior is nothing to sneeze at, either. The nifty stern platform can be moved to three different positions using the dual linear lift function: It can be raised to expand the aft living area, lowered to launch tenders, or left in the default position to function as a waterside lounge. At the opposite end, the foredeck is equipped with an oversized sun pad. To top it off, the sundeck spans nearly 250 square feet and is 60 percent larger than the category average.

Cocooned in elegance: Sea trialling the Pershing 9X

The 28.1 metre 9X premiered at the Cannes Yachting Show in September 2017, but only made her first public appearance in the US 14 months later at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show...

“She’s a beast,” says the captain with a smile, as the Pershing 9X leans into a 360 at close to 40 knots. If by beast he means a force that can reckon with the open ocean at ridiculous speeds, I would have to agree. However, the interior, where we are being cocooned in enviable elegance, is anything but beast-like.

The second model in Pershing’s new X series, the 28.1 metre 9X premiered at the Cannes Yachting Show in September 2017, but only made her first public appearance in the US 14 months later at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. I was invited on board this American debut (hull No. 6, built on spec) on an unusually chilly day in Palm Beach with temperatures an un-Florida-like 15˚C and an even brisker north breeze threatening our enjoyment. Yet despite the wide open aft doors, the saloon was supremely comfortable; the silky soft carpet cradled my bare feet and yes, my hosts confirm, the heat was on – a first for me in South Florida.

“This is a re-invented 92,” says Randy Coleman, vice president of sales for Ferretti Group America , listing the new generation’s plus points: more spacious cockpit, improved foredeck seating, a new style of hull windows and the latest technology. It’s also built with a lot more carbon fibre. The benefits of the strong, lightweight material are well known; what’s less known is the trade-off – carbon fibre transmits sound. Yet the 9X is “super engineered”, you could say, for a quiet ride.

Helping the silence is the choice of power plants, a pair of almost-inaudible MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls. “A lot of the time, the captain will be pulling away from the dock with these motors in different models, and I’m saying, ‘are you going to start the engines or are we going to drift out of here?’” Coleman says. He’s absolutely right. As we make our way up the Intracoastal Waterway all I can hear is the gentle splash of our wake.

Leaving the shelter of the Palm Beach Inlet, Captain Damon Lish opens her up and we seem to skim over the seas, throwing a rooster tail as high as the top deck, courtesy of the Top System surface drives. It is mesmerizing to watch from the comfort of the cockpit, which is indeed spacious, as Coleman claimed. To create more room here, the flybridge is supported by “wings” over the side decks instead of structure aft that would infringe on the space. The seating here and elsewhere outside feels and looks like a sumptuous leather, but it’s actually an award-winning, vinyl by Spradling called Hitch.

Pershing is not one to exaggerate its swiftness; there’s no need. The 9X’s official max is 42 knots, and we reach that speed over ground with little effort, while the boat speed monitor reads 46 knots. As Lish makes circles in the open Atlantic, I watch him continually flick the trim controls. “She’s amazingly responsive for 92 feet, and around 180,000 pounds,” he says. “She’s just fun to drive, which is unusual when you get to this size.”

He’s driving the hard way though; press the “Easy Set” button and the auto-trim system does the work for you. Making it even easier is the new Xenta joystick. “This is one of the few surface drive boats that we can run with a joystick,” Coleman says. “From a manoeuvring standpoint, it’s like driving a conventional shaft driven boat around the dock.” The captain appreciates the new feature that lets him run the boat up to cruise speed with the joystick controlling both throttles and steering. “It’s very easy to pick it up and use,” Lish says.

Like all Pershings of late, Poltrona Frau designed the bridge to look as good as the yacht performs. Within the helm’s supple leather are three 24-inch Naviop touchscreens; two more 17-inch screens are up top. Each one has its own processor, allowing the user to customize each and offering plenty of redundancy. I wait until we’re back on the Intracoastal at a more sedate speed before venturing up to the flybridge. The helm overlooks an impressive foredeck lounge, one of the big changes in the model. In addition to dining/cocktail areas, both the top deck and foredeck have massive reclining sunpads that can be covered by canopies.

Whether you take advantage of the sunpads or take the wheel, the 9X is pure respite. Pershing calls the series Generation X. It’s an apt name, as that’s who the boat will likely appeal to – forty to early fifty-something-year-olds who need a breather from their hectic lives. Board the yacht at noon at Chelsea Piers and you can be having a drink in Sag Harbor at 3pm. Miami to Nassau? A quick four hours. That’s the beauty of a Pershing, and for busy owners, what better gift is there than time?

Highlights of Pershing's X Generation Models

The Pershing “X Generation” series is innovative in every way, beginning with composite materials based on carbon, vinyl ester resin, and epoxy resin. The yachts' sporty lines are exalted by the large side wings and the aerodynamic profile of the sundeck. Using powerful yet fuel-efficient engines with surface-drive transmissions, these yachts provide all passengers onboard with the famous "Pershing Thrill."

Pershing’s X Generation yachts provide a diverse range of models. With a yacht length to meet every need, boaters will find luxury, speed, and comfort with any of the 9X, 8X, 7X, 6X, and 5X models (92’, 83’, 69’, 62’ and 54’, respectively).

PERSHING 9X

The Pershing 9X  yacht is eye-catching in the use of carbon fiber, the side wings built into the superstructure, and the sundeck’s aerodynamic profile. The Pershing 9X is 92 feet in length (28 meters) and capable of 42 knots. This luxurious yacht can carry 20 passengers comfortably and has four cabins and six heads.

A few highlight features of the Pershing 9X include:

  • Twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines and a surface-drive system with Rolla surface propellers. Performance comes in at a top speed of 42 knots and an impressive maximum range of 380 nautical miles at a cruising speed of up to 38 knots.
  • Integrated control, maneuvering, and monitoring systems are housed in a futuristic helm station created with Poltrona Frau, an Italian furniture maker that specializes in leatherwork.
  • The hull is composed of composite materials using carbon and vinyl ester resin and epoxy resin is used in the deck and superstructure.
  • Joystick functions and a surface-drive system provide superb handling capabilities for the Pershing 9X.
  • Fully integrated drive, navigation, and monitoring systems for high performance and trim optimization interact between engines, onboard instrumentation, and control systems. The intuitive platform features components from Top System and Onyx for the Easy Set system, Xenta Systems for the electro-hydraulic steer-by-wire system, and Naviop-Simrad for the navigation and monitoring systems. 
  • Natural light is optimized inside the Pershing 9X with four windows, with portholes, in the hull bulwarks for a total glass surface of over 15 square meters.
  • Navigation is available on large touchscreens at the helm station and the pilot station on the sun deck.

The Pershing 9X partnership was born of the work of yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee under the guidance of Piero Ferrari, and the engineering department.

The Pershing 9X optimizes space onboard with the cockpit as an extension of the lounge, a sun pad, and a living area with a table that can be electrically lowered for more space. The glass door and windows that fold and retract into the bulkheads below the deck seamlessly join the interior to the exterior for an even larger main deck.

Two spoilers run along the fore-triangle to conceal the mooring cleats, fairleads, and winches.

The Pershing 8X yacht

The Pershing 8X  yacht is light, built from carbon fiber, super fuel-efficient, and capable of reaching a top speed of 45 knots with two MTU 16V 2000 M96 engines. All this is navigated by an integrated propulsion control system for maneuvering, navigation, and monitoring systems. All heads turn with the classic Pershing sleek and sporty lines and characteristic side wings and aerodynamic sun deck.

The Pershing 8X won at the Motor Boat Awards in January of 2021 in the “Custom Yachts” category based on innovative features, technical parameters, and style based on meticulous performance tests and sea trials. The Motor Boat Awards are organized by Motor Boat & Yachting.

At 83 feet (25.55 meters long) and 19 feet (5.86 meters wide), the Pershing 8X is the result of the collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari, and the Group Engineering Department. The yacht comfortably holds 16 passengers and has four cabins and three heads.

PERSHING 7X

The light, fast, and high-performing Pershing 7X  yacht is part of Pershing’s X Generation. Sporty, bold, sleek, and packed with state-of-the-art technology, Fulvio De Simoni’s design uses ultra-lightweight materials.

The surface drive allows navigation at higher cruising speeds with lower fuel consumption and two MAN V12 1800 engines enable the Pershing 7X to reach speeds up to 50 knots. For significant efficiency, carbon fiber is the primary material, as well as lightweight alloys, and lithium batteries. The displacement is 35 metric tons.

With 69 feet 3 inches (21.11 meters) of length and a 17-foot beam (5.35 meters), 16 passengers can enjoy the luxurious yacht with a three-cabin and three-head layout.

PERSHING 6X (Project)

The Pershing 6X  yacht is a bold addition to the Pershing X Generation line. At 62 feet (18.94 meters) in overall length with a beam of 16 feet (4.80 meters) wide, and a draft of 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 meters) the sleek and streamlined yacht is born of collaboration between Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari, the design firm headed by Fulvio De Simoni, and the engineering department.

A pair of 1,550 hp MAN V12 1550 engines propel the aerodynamic Pershing 6X to a speed of 48 knots and a cruising speed of 42 knots. Although compact, the Pershing 6X packs top technology and efficient design into each yacht. The standard Pershing 6X comfortably holds 14 passengers and has three cabins and three bathrooms.

PERSHING 5X

The Pershing 5X yacht, at 54 feet 2 inches length overall, comes with two Volvo D11-IPS 950 engines for speeds up to 36 knots. Twelve passengers are comfortable aboard, and the yacht includes two cabins and two heads.

From the first Pershing yacht launched more than a quarter-century ago to the latest 80-footer that I had a chance to experience in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the company has kept sight of the fact that its name derived from someone who personified speed and power. The builder’s modern facilities are located in Mondolfo, near the Adriatic coast of Italy, on Via J.J. Pershing, a street named after John Joseph “Blackjack” Pershing.

Pershing was a U.S. Army general famed for independent thinking and innovative tactics, which yielded considerable success in World War I. Pershing missiles, named in honor of the general, gained fame in Europe decades later during the Cold War and provided inspiration for yachts that were rockets in their own right.

I had seen a Pershing 80 in Europe, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to test the first one brought into America. It was calm offshore on test day, not great for pushing the seakeeping capabilities of the deep-V hull on which the Pershing rides, but perfect for checking the limits of speed and maneuverability. Frankly, in addition to the normal test maneuvers — S-turns, crash stops, back-downs and such — we spent some time, and a few extra gallons of fuel, just having a bit of absolutely great fun, and isn’t that what a boat like this is for? She did not disappoint, displaying the frisky capabilities of a smaller sport boat while offering the smooth, solid-as-rails ride of a big yacht. She blasted onto plane and accelerated with little trim as she passed 30, 40, then 45 knots. As I throttled back, she remained on plane down to 16 knots, just about half of her comfortable cruising speed of 30 knots, and did it all so quietly that we could converse without raising our voices. There was little hint in either noise or vibration that nearly 5,000 horses resided under her afterdeck.

This particular Pershing 80 is custom designed and outfitted for American tastes and desires, and especially well suited for operation in our southern seas. This is the owner’s third Pershing , so he was heavily involved in development of the new layout.

Like all Pershing s, this yacht is propelled by surface drives. I first learned to handle surface drives aboard a Pershing back in the days when that was no mean feat, but operation is a lot easier now, thanks to advances in drives, props and controls. I’ve had the opportunity to test a number of Pershing s over the years, usually with just two or three people aboard. This boat, though, had caught the interest of veterans at the Ferretti Group’s sales center ( Pershing ‘s parent company), so by the time we cast off lines for our sea trial, our complement totaled seven. All that extra weight is not an ideal situation when a builder’s shooting for the best top speed, but it didn’t seem to affect the Pershing 80 much. With a 40 percent fuel load and full water tanks, and temperatures that had climbed into the 80s, we topped out just a touch above 46 knots. In cooler climes with a lighter load, the builder has seen her reach 50 knots, and that sounds about right to me.

Although speed is paramount on the Pershing docket, it’s far from the only priority. This is not some stripped-out poker-run boat, but rather a solidly built and well-outfitted yacht of the first order. Outside, she’s beautiful from every angle, and inside she had enough clever features to keep me aboard much longer than I expected.

Among the most fascinating was the array of windows and openings in both the hull and superstructure. They can be buttoned up tighter than white on rice when the weather is too hot, too cold or too wet. They can then be slid, folded, dropped or rotated out of the way to create something akin to an open day boat when the climate is just right. They look good from outside and function superbly for view and ventilation from the inside — what more could anyone ask?

Let’s take, for example, the after end of the salon, which is nearly all glass with a settee on the centerline inside, a lounge on the centerline outside and doors to port and starboard. Slide the doors to the centerline, press a button, and the entire assembly drops down to create a completely clear opening. Press another button, and the panel in the hardtop slides aft to create a substantial opening above the helm and dining area. A third button slides the cantilevered after end of the hardtop forward to allow full sun to the centerline lounge.

The outfitting of the salon is just as flexible. Normally, there’s a centerline settee and an L-shape lounge to starboard, great for conversation. At other times, the settee can be slid outboard, creating a U-shape lounge, leaving a wider passageway for parties and a better arrangement for viewing the pop-up video screen to port. There’s also a square ottoman at the center of the lounge arrangement. It has a reversible top, hard on one side for use as a table and upholstered on the opposite side in case you want to prop your feet up or have a spot for extra seating. It, rather than the settee, can also be moved to the corner to expand the lounge. None of this — pardon the phrase — is rocket science, but it is very clever and yields a highly functional interior that is quite attractive as well.

Part of the attractiveness lies with the involvement of the owner in customizing this particular Pershing . Abaft the triple helm seat is an island bar with a backlit translucent onyx face. Overhead, wenge wood panels (in place of the standard leather) are penetrated by hundreds of optical fibers to allow the stars to come out at night, even when the hardtop is closed. These are only two of the many custom features that added considerably to the base price of our test boat, exclusive of the upgraded engine package, but in my opinion, it was money well spent to achieve something quite special.

The Pershing 80 is available in either a three- or four-stateroom arrangement. Both layouts have an island queen forward and a full-beam king master suite, with large hull-side windows, amidships, as well as a twin cabin to port between the two larger staterooms. All three staterooms have their own heads, the king with a tub and shower as well as a bidet, the other two with a toilet and shower only. The choice in layout lies to starboard, where you can order a second twin-berth stateroom that shares the other twin cabin’s head, or a large sitting area open to the passageway. Our test boat had the fourth stateroom, but one berth was removed and stored ashore for easy reinstallation to make room for a Technogym exercise bike outboard. A Pullman bunk made up for the lost berth in that cabin.

Stern-to mooring is often called Med-mooring because it is so prevalent in that region’s crowded harbors. We’re seeing more of it in new resorts on our shores, though, so the foredeck of the Pershing 80 will be as welcome here as it is there. The U-shape settee will be popular under way, but it really comes into its own when moored. Its folding canopy, which stores away convertible-style, provides shade and privacy. Opposite the settee, just abaft the windlass, is a spacious sun pad that also benefits from the privacy provided by the canopy. More sun lounges and seating are situated aft, and a big stern platform, covering the surface drives, provides space for easy boarding of the RIB and PWC carried in the stern garage.

I was also impressed by the engine room and the crew quarters. The engine room was nicely organized and easily accessible, and had a number of often overlooked areas done right. There were safety cages around the stub shafts between engines and drives; there was an interchangeable dual-pump setup for the fire/bilge system; the exhausts were supported from the engine beds, not the overhead, and the engine room door was watertight, not just gas-tight.

The crew quarters and galley were much more spacious than on many yachts designed and built in Europe, even though the two crew cabins share a head. Outfitting includes Sub-Zero refrigeration, Miele range, oven and dishwasher, and other premium amenities. There was even a real laundry with space to work, not just a small washer/dryer stacked in a locker.

The Pershing 80 is a superb yacht that packs a whole lot of dolce vita, and even more fun, into a package that can be handled by a couple but still can accommodate a captain and mate (or chef) when desired. I was truly sorry to see the day end and couldn’t help stealing a glance back over my shoulder as I headed down the dock. That, my fellow enthusiasts, is what it’s all about.
