The top superyacht regattas to add to your 2024 calendar

Related articles.

From the South of France to St Barths, the superyacht regatta calendar is packed with opportunities for owners to race their boats in stunning settings. Whether you are looking for keen competition or are more interested in the après scene, we are here to help you pick the perfect contest.

Oyster World Rally, Antigua

From 14 january, 2024 .

By the finish of the 22/23 rally, more than 100 Oysters had circumnavigated over the decade that the British builder has been running these rallies. Dozens more will have their chance at the next one, which heads west from Antigua and makes 15 stopovers on the 16-month route.

New Zealand Millennium Cup, Auckland

February 23-26, 2024.

Postponed from 2023, the Millennium Cup 2024 takes place in a new location – Auckland, aka the City of Sails, which eases logistics for international owners. There is also a new multihull division as well. What isn’t changing is the fun racing with a Kiwi flavour.

Superyacht Challenge, Antigua

March 11-17, 2024.

Defining superyachts as vessels over 24.4 metres, this regatta offers four days of lively racing from the entrance to English Harbour as well as relaxed parties brimming with camaraderie in historic Nelson’s Dockyard.

The race is held annually in Nelson’s Dockyard and comprises daily pursuit races, and an optional race around the island, with the start and finish line just off English Harbour. Entrants are divided into three classes — buccaneers, corsairs and privateers — and all compete under the ORC Superyacht Rule.

Rather than a traditional trophy, winners receive barrels of rum, suitably filled in true Caribbean style. Additional awards include best-dressed crew, loudest Caribbean shirt, and a cook-off between crews. In fact, the only trophy awarded is the Gosnell Trophy, which is given to the crew that has "competed in the Spirit of the Regatta" both on the water and ashore.

St Barths Bucket Regatta

March 21-24, 2024.

The St Barths Bucket Regatta attracts some of the finest sailors and sailing yachts from across the world and is always a highlight on the racing calendar. This invitation-only event welcomes around 40 superyachts (usually upwards of 30 metres in length) to the sandy shores of St Barths each year.

The racing has traditionally been on three courses but organisers have said they now have 30 options to choose from.

Off the water, owners have their choice of countless invitations, from private gatherings to the Bucket-affiliated soiree at Tamarin as well as the final awards ceremony party, which is traditionally held at the five-star Eden Rock hotel. At the yacht hop, some owners have been known to fly in thousands of oysters and host aerial silk performers, which proves that the old Bucket spirit of winning the party — if not the day on the water — is still prevalent.

The 2024 fleet is already shaping up nicely with regatta regulars such as the 56-metre Malek , 51-metre Red Dragon and 35-metre Whisper all making a return, with the new 59-metre Maximus also anticipated to join.

Les Voiles de St Barths Richard Mille

April 14-20, 2024.

A relative newcomer to the racing scene, Les Voiles de St Barths may not be steeped in history like many long-timers on this list, but it has swiftly become a calendar staple since its inception in 2010. It welcomes a serious fleet of modified racers and mini maxis - think TP52s and JV72s - among smaller racing boats and a multihull fleet.

Now in its 13th year, the event will see the fleet return to the red-roofed town of Gustavia in St Barths. Like the bucket, the regatta is powered by reliable trade winds that arrive from the east, which means very few days are lost due to unfavourable weather conditions. Racecourses make use of the landscape with clusters of rocks punching out of the water that serve as marks. Some more competitive teams even send divers down to see how close they can get before having to tack off.

Racing is close and competitive but things are much more laid back ashore. The lay day usually consists of a long lunch at Nikki Beach followed by tug of war and diving for bottles of Barons de Rothschild champagne.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta

June 4-8, 2024.

The Sardinian superyacht regatta is back as the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda welcomes Giorgio Armani as its title sponsor for the second year.

Where other regattas may have a T-shirts and flip-flops feel, Sardinia is about glamour in the playground of the Italian elite. It’s not all focused on the nightlife, though; any serious sailor knows racing here is not for the faint-hearted.

“Sardinia is, in my eyes, the most exceptional regatta area in the world,” says the owner of  WinWin . And he's not wrong. Competitors can expect stronger winds from the northwest and have to navigate rocks jutting out of the water in Bomb Alley — the passage between Sardinia and La Maddalena archipelago.

The regatta is always capped off with an evening at Phi Beach —  WinWin ’s owner says it’s the best party of any regatta. It’s a quintessentially Italian summer scene, with guests treated to glorious sunset views and music from top DJs piped through bars and dance floors interspersed among the rocks right on the water.

Entry is open to superyachts with a minimum length of 27.43 metres and the event will also encompass the Southern Wind Rendezvous.

Superyacht Cup, Palma

June 19-22, 2024.

This annual event for yachts over 24 metres is the longest-running superyacht regatta in Europe, and now incorporates a Corinthian Spirit Class

A laid-back southern Mediterranean vibe prevails at the Superyacht Cup in Palma, Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta. Leave your jackets and ties at home; this is a shorts and T-shirt event. Uniquely, this regatta is contained within a fenced-in event village, proving that relaxed and informal can also mean ultra-exclusive.

While racing in the Bay of Palma may not offer the same dramatic scenery as the Caribbean, it is ideal for newcomers who may find rounding inflatable marks less daunting than a rocky outcrop, and its more sheltered position means there are no boat-breaking big seas. The race committee has the ability to set courses in the bay to suit the fleet and to really give every yacht a better chance to sail to its rating.

Last year's fixture welcomes a quartet of J Class entries, Svea , Topaz , Ranger and Velsheda .

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

September 8-14,  2024.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the highlight of many a Maxi racing calendar and is back for its 34th edition in 2024. Staged off Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda - known for its rocky scenery and turquoise waters – it continues to attract dedicated owners, highly skilled crews and exceptional yachts.

This year's Cup follows a hugely successful event last year. Racing is open to yachts of at least 18.29 metres and, for the first time this year, multihulls can join its ranks.

Oyster Palma Regatta, Palma

September 21–25, 2024 .

Taking place at the new venue of Port Adriano, this special edition celebrates 50 years of Oyster Yachts. In addition to the friendly competition over four days of racing, there will be an owners’ dinner to commemorate its half-century of building bluewater cruising yachts.

Ibiza JoySail, Balearic Islands

September 19-22, 2024.

Now in its fourth edition and growing exponentially each year, this laid-back regatta welcomes maxis and superyachts for offshore and coastal racing in the Balearic Islands, along with plenty of onshore socialising hosted by STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.

Les Voiles de St Tropez

September 26 – 6 october, 2024.

The Mediterranean big-boat racing season winds down with Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. But don't be fooled, this is no small soirée. The event is the largest gathering of Maxis yachts in the world as owners and crew come together and toast to the last of the summer sun with a week of good old-fashioned racing.

Swan Med Regatta-Tuscany Challenge, Marina di Scarlino, Italy

October 2024 .

New to the calendar last year, the inaugural Tuscany Challenge gathered Med-based Swan owners for a first ever Med-based end-of-season regatta set against the stunning backdrop of the Tuscan archipelago. This Nautor Swan Experience gathering celebrates the entire Swan world across a three-day competition. Hosted by the Yacht Club Isole di Toscana, it determines the world champions in the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36.

How to follow the America’s Cup preliminary regatta

  • Toby Heppell
  • September 11, 2023

The first America's Cup preliminary regatta raced in AC40s will take place in September 2023 in the Catalonian port of Vilanova i la Geltrú

yachting regatta

The six competing teams in the 37th America’s Cup are set to get their first chance to line up competitively against one another at the first America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta, from 14-17 September 2023.

The event, which sees the America’s Cup teams move 50km up the coast to Vilanova i La Geltrú from the main event base in Barcelona, includes four days of racing in the AC40 one-design foiling monohull.

Racing begins with official practise on Thursday 14 September, followed by three fleet races on 15 and 16 September, and then two further fleet races on the Sunday before a single match race final. Coverage will be live-streamed via americascup.com as well on The America’s Cup YouTube channel.

As it is held in the supplied AC40s, rather than the America’s Cup final designs of the AC75 , the Preliminary Regatta will have little direct bearing on the Cup match proper, which takes place 11 months later. However, it is a good opportunity for the teams to bank some foiling race practice, and perhaps glean some indications of whose preparation schedules have been the most fruitful so far.

As with any one-design fleet, the AC40s will put a premium on boat handling, so the one thing the Preliminary Regatta will give some indication of is clues to the sailing teams’ preparation level.

“All the teams are looking forward to lining up in the AC40 against other teams because it’ll give us a good read and a good yardstick on just how our sailors are doing in terms of their technique and the sharpness of their racing skills. It’ll also give us some good feedback on some of the things that we think are fast about the way you sail an AC40; everything from bustle clearance to sail trim. We’ll get a chance to measure those things when AC40s line up against other AC40s,” explains Jeff Causey, INEOS Britannia’s boat operations manager.

Jimmy Spithill explained that even within the one-design there will be variations in set up: “The hardware is exactly the same as the others, and it really comes down to the teams using the controls: cant, ride height, the trim of the boat. Obviously sails and technique, there’s a lot of little things there.”

However, INEOS Britannia’s Leigh McMillan cautioned: “We’re certainly going to put some more time in the AC40s. But the Cup itself, and designing and having a fast boat for the America’s Cup, has got to be our absolute goal. It’s not all about the AC40 for now!”

How do the America’s Cup teams stack up?

Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL)

The Defenders moved their team from New Zealand to Barcelona this July. Nathan Outteridge and Pete Burling have been taking the dual helms of their AC75 and two AC40s. The Kiwis have performed consistently in the Practice Racing in Barcelona with a tight-knit team that trust in their process.

INEOS Britannia (GBR)

The British squad moved from their winter training base in Palma, and have been trialing a T6 test boat and AC40. Giles Scott is sailing team manager for skipper Ben Ainslie. But it has not been the strongest display from the team in practise racing so far, with execution of manouvers in the AC40 looking less than polished.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI)

Vilanova Preliminary Regatta will be the first time Ernesto Bertarelli’s famous Swiss team takes part in an America’s Cup race since 2010, now skippered by Hans- Peter Steinacher. Combined helms, Arnaud Psarofaghis and Maxime Bachelin have formed a dynamic partnership, rooted in steady progression, and Alinghi Red Bull Racing have surprised to the upside in the practice regattas.

American Magic (USA)

Australian Tom Slingsby and Brit Paul Goodison are among the sailing squad headliners. The US team has secured some of the highest number of hours in the AC40s thanks to a two-boat programme. They chose to sit out the first few days of the recent practice regatta, preferring to complete their aero and foil testing schedule, but when they came to the racecourse, they were sensational and already look ones to beat in the one-design class.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (ITA)

Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni return on the twin wheels of the Italian AC40, though Spithill cautioned they have had less time racing against other boats than some other teams. However, Luna Rossa have been unafraid to ride very different modes to the others and at times have shown unbelievable boatspeed.

Orient Express Team (FRA)

The newest team on the block, the French squad were flying on their first AC40 test sail after launching mid-August, skipper Quentin Delapierre crediting the time they put in on the simulator. Whether they can challenge for the title in Vilanova is a tall ask with so little time in the AC40 compared to the more established teams but they should put up a good fight.

America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta schedule

The format of the Regatta will consist of up to 8 fleet races followed by a single Match Race Final between the two highest scoring Competitors in the fleet racing.

Racing will take place on:

  • Thursday 14 September Official Practice
  • Friday 15 September Race Day 1 – 3 Fleet Races
  • Saturday 16 September Race Day 2 – 3 Fleet Races
  • Sunday 17 September Race Day 3 – 2 Fleet Races, Match Race Final (1 race).

Racing is scheduled to be between 1530 and 1730 hours each day, though this can be changed if conditions so require.

This may not be available in territories where broadcast rights have been sold, but as yet there is no information available about broadcast deals, so it is safe to assume most territories will have Youtube access to racing.

The America’s Cup Social Media channels on Instagram , Facebook , and X (Twitter) will also be fully activated and updated throughout the racing with a mix of multi-media. Daily race reports will be available on the America’s Cup website after racing.

You can also follow all of our coverage on Yachting World’s America’s Cup mini site.

For those wishing to watch in Barcelona, the America’s Cup Race Village will offer spectators the chance to experience the unique buzz and atmosphere of the regattas off the water.

The Race Villages free throughout all America’s Cup events, with large maxi screens to view the racing action live with commentary plus event and team activations alongside an array of food and beverage stations.

The Race Village in Vilanova i La Geltrú, will open at 11:00 daily and run through to 20:00 with live racing between 15:00 to 17:30 and sailor presentations and interviews after the racing each day.

When is the next America’s Cup preliminary regatta?

After this first America’s Cup Preliminary regatta, teams head to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for a second regatta between 29th November to 2nd December 2023. The third and last preliminary regatta will be held in August 2024 in Barcelona.

As with the first event, the regatta in Saudi Arabia will have racing in AC40s, but the final preliminary event in 2024 will see all the America’s Cup teams race in their new AC75s for the very first time.

Corinthian is a name synonymous with New England sailing. For more than 125 years, the Corinthian Yacht Club has called Marblehead, MA home, and in that time, they’ve produced numerous racing champions including several America’s Cup defenders. The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta was started nearly 40 years ago, and it’s become of the largest celebrates of “classic yachts and characters.” Just as speculator as the racing, though, is the onshore atmosphere, another compelling reason to go.

Throughout the weekend, attendees are welcomed to cocktail hours, expos and plenty to see and do.

Extreme Sailing Series

Held annually since 2007, it is a global environmentally-friendly stadium racing series of catamarans. It is specifically aimed at spectators, and the event attracts world regattas’ enthusiasts .

The races are short-lasting , around 10-15 minutes, which makes the start the most exciting part of a race. The course depends on the number of boats and wind conditions. It is important for teams to tactically out-manoeuvre each other, but they can also receive penalties during a race. The last race of the series counts for double points making the whole event dramatic until the last minute.

All about the Extreme Sailing series is here.

Extreme Sailing Series - Muscat

Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), Germany

As its name says, this largest sailing event in the world attracts around 5,000 sailors, 2,000 ships and three million people every year. It takes place in Kiel, Germany in the last week of June. This ship racing championship has Olympic, International and Offshore classes.

The centre of sporting activities is the Olympic Harbor of Schilksee. You can enjoy the tallest-ships convention in Germany, free music from popular bands, and finish everything with fireworks at 11 pm on Sunday fired from a pontoon or the quays.

Both cups are connected with high-profile entrepreneurs and sponsors, so the cups do not serve for showing boat skills per se, but also as fundraising and management events.

America's Cup

Regatés Imperialés (Imperial Regattas), France

Starting in 2003, it is one of the youngest world regattas. Taking place in May in the Gulf of Ajaccio, France it is primarily famous for its remarkable beauty. This boat race is one of the most important cultural events of the island and is an introduction to the sailing season. To get the best view, one should be on another boat.

Each year, around 30 yachts, such as Firebird, Moonbeam and Lulu, compete for fun and prizes. There is no entry charge, but a v oluntary donation to the Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer, one of the organizing partners.

You can check out additional information about the Imperial Regattas here.

Regatta

Rolex China Sea Race, Hong Kong

Many have not heard about a biennial 565 NM offshore sailing event starting in Hong Kong, and finishing in the Subic Bay in the Philippines. It draws the attention of yachting enthusiasts in southeast Asia.

Many believe that Chinese sailors need more professional training and time to learn from experience even though the current record is 47 hours and 31 minutes RP66 Alive made. Consequently, it is safe to say that this regatta will just continue to grow with time attracting more and more visitors.

More on the Rolex China Sea Race on their official website.

Regatta

Rolex Fastnet Regatta, UK

Started in 1925 and, since then, taking place every two years in August. It is one of the longest-running and most demanding offshore world regattas. The Grand Slam race begins in Cowes, goes through the Needles Channel, down the English Channel, across the Celtic Sea and around the Fastnet Rock (after which the race got its name), only to return the same way and finish in Plymouth.

Loïck Peyron and his VPLP-designed 130-foot long trimaran Banque Populaire made the current multihull record time of 32 hours and 48 minutes in 2011. Even though the race is for professional sailors but it also attracts leisure sailors. Both should be aware of strong westerlies.

Very interesting review of yacht regattas. I wonder why the Chinese regatta has such a name, is its history with the Rolex company?

' src=

Dear Sochi,

I am glad you liked our reviews of the regattas. The Chinese regatta has such a name, since Rolex is main sponsor of the regatta. The same can be applied to Volvo Ocean Race where Volvo was the main sponsor of the race.

Best regards, Bruno

Wouldn’t that be the knock off Regatta??

Crews made up of the best sailors. Identical catamarans, with foils and a rigid wingsail, reaching 100 km/h. Spectacular races that last 15 minutes at most. The season consists of multiple rounds on the seas of five continents. Launched in 2019, the SailGP circuit redefines the world of competitive sailing, with innovative, continuously optimized catamarans that deliver outstanding competitive performance. These flying yachts bear the colours the countries they represent and form the fastest fleet in history.

For Sir Ben Ainslie, skipper of the Great Britain team, “the SailGP circuit is a major milestone in the evolution of yachting. The boats use the most state-of-the-art technology while the competition continues to widen the appeal of sailing.”

Maxi yacht rolex cup an event for racing giants.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has been the flagship annual event for Maxi monohulls more than 70 feet (21 metres) in length since 1980. Organized in Sardinia by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, it brings together the greatest number of maxi yachts, which compete for nearly a week in races ranging in distance from 15–35 nautical miles (28 to 65 kilometres).

Jewels of naval architecture, these yachts are among the most powerful ever built and are crewed by the best skippers and teams in the world. The monohulls may be immense, but the gaps at the finish line remain small. As with any regatta, precision is essential to good performance.

The partnership that unites Rolex and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was initiated in 1985 and is one of the oldest on the nautical calendar.

52 SUPER SERIES Extreme precision

The TP52 class world circuit is one of the most demanding in the sport of yachting. The races, 15 to 30 nautical miles long (28–56 kilometres), are contested on 52-foot (15.85 metres) monohulls meeting strict measurement criteria.

Timing is key to teamwork in the 52 SUPER SERIES. At this level, every second counts and winning boils down to precision. As emphasized by Brazilian racer Robert Scheidt, this requirement makes Rolex the ideal partner for this series of races: “Rolex stands for precision and excellence in everything it does. These are the characteristics found in the most successful TP52 crews, where teamwork and timing are essential elements.”

Since 2017, Rolex has also been Title Sponsor of the Rolex TP52 World Championship, held mid-season as part of the 52 SUPER SERIES.

The glorious 141' sailing yacht COLUMBIA in full sail.

CK News , Destination Spotlight

Classic yachting and regattas in new england, join the spectator fleet to witness the beauty and racing action.

Sailing yacht regattas are a New England summertime tradition. From July to early September, competitive yacht races take place from Nantucket to Northeast Harbor every weekend. No other region quite compares to New England’s yachting community.

Chartering a yacht in New England during “regatta time” means you will get the opportunity to spectate or even participate in some of our cherished New England yachting traditions.

The Best in Summertime Entertainment

And of all yacht races, classic regattas – featuring beautifully maintained, wooden and Spirit of Tradition sailboats – are some of the most exciting to watch.

Not only are the classically-designed vessels some of the most historical boats in the world, but the racing is also inspiring, conjuring up the spirit of yachting lore according to writer Carol Baruether in a recent article . In other words, sailors and spectators alike get treated to the best in summertime entertainment on the water.

Dockside Upside

The races are a thrill to watch, and the dockside social soirées, awards ceremonies, and parties enable attendees to chat with New England’s finest yachtsmen. For yachters, there isn’t a better way to spend a summer weekend in New England, the article notes.

Which sailing regattas should you attend?

MarinaLife Magazine has the insider’s scoop on some of New England’s most prestigious summer sailboat races. We have added a few of our favorites. Try to make it to a few – and of course, a sailboat charter for race day offers the best seat to take in all the thrilling action!

Regatta Calendar

All of these regattas have active websites where 2023 dates will be posted.  While the calendar dates change a little each year, New England regattas follow an easy pattern in that most of the cherished events have been taking place for over 50 years – usually in or around the exact same weekend each and every summer. Here are some of the most notable:

Eggemoggin Reach Regatta – Brooklin, ME  (August 6, 2022)

Considered one of the best-kept secrets in Maine, the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta began humbly in 1985 with thirteen wooden boats and a dream. Organizer Steve White along with Frank Hull of Brooklin Boatyard first envisioned the race as an opportunity for wooden boat owners to get together and enjoy each other’s company as well as to compete. The race quickly grew to 125 boats and is now co-hosted by Brooklin Boatyard and Rockport Marine, according to the article. The Regatta’s 15-mile course has remained the same over the years. Additionally, the Camden Feeder Regatta and the Castine Classic Yacht Race soon joined the ERR to create a truly spectacular three-day event.

Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta – Marblehead, MA  (August 13-14, 2022)

Corinthian is a name synonymous with New England sailing. For more than 125 years, the Corinthian Yacht Club has called Marblehead, MA home, and in that time, they’ve produced numerous racing champions including several America’s Cup defenders. The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta was started nearly 40 years ago, and it’s become of the largest celebrations of “classic yachts and characters.” Just as spectacular as the racing, though, is the onshore atmosphere, another compelling reason to go, the article notes.

Opera House Cup & Nantucket Race Week – Nantucket, MA  (August 13 -21, 2022)

Nantucket Race Week is a full nine-day experience that marshals the entire Nantucket community together for a fun-filled week of regattas, awards ceremonies, and parties. Races provide sport for everyone from young dinghy sailors and families in household one designs to grand prix racers at the very top of their profession. Racing begins Saturday.

The Opera House Cup

A cherished tradition, the Opera House Cup Regatta, is held on the third Sunday of every August on Nantucket. It was the first all-wooden, single-hulled classic boat regatta on the East Coast, and it attracts some of the finest sailboats in the country. Past participants include former America’s Cup winners (Intrepid, Weatherly, Columbia), well-known competitors ( Ticonderoga, Wild Horses, Blackwatch ), and such other notable yachts as the Mystic Seaport schooner Brilliant  and General Patton’s  When and If .

*Three of these winning yachts are featured at the end of this post so you can learn more about how to charter a regatta-level boat.

Gloucester Schooner Festival – Gloucester, MA  (September 1-5, 2022)

Newport classic yacht regatta – newport, ri  (september 3-4, 2022).

Annual Newport Classic Yacht Regatta presented by IYRS School of Technology & Trades  draws on classic yachts that are both cherished in Newport and also lovingly restored and refurbished. The International Yacht Restoration School along Thames Street is a perfect setting for this regatta, and like many of the classic events happening in New England each year, many have a scheduled boat parade on the final day of the event.  Newport is a natural amphitheatre for yachts of all kinds but there is nothing quite as breathtaking as watching the classics, which are cherished here, out stretching their legs and racing like the thoroughbreds they are.

Vineyard Cup – Martha’s Vineyard, MA  (July 7-9, 2023)

Held in Martha’s Vineyard, this regatta features more than 100 participating yachts and a full slate of races over three days. The event – which was launched in 2006 – is sponsored by Sail MV, and it’s quickly become one of New England’s premier regattas. Not only is the racing spectacular, but attendees can also enjoy a wide range of onshore events. Although this isn’t strictly a classic regatta – there are many different classes of boats and races courses – the Vineyard Cup is a must-see for classic yacht enthusiasts, the article notes.

The Friendship Sloop 62nd Homecoming Days – Rockland, ME   ( July 20-23, 2023)

Friendship Sloop Days is an annual event that has taken place each summer in Rockland, Maine for half a century. It is sponsored by the Friendship Sloop Society. Sloops of the Friendship design, and their sailors, gather from all over the east coast to celebrate and commemorate the famous style of gaff-rigged sloop that originated in and is named for the small coastal town of Friendship, Maine.

Camden Classic Yacht Regatta – Camden, ME  (July 27-29, 2023 )

For more than 30 years, classic yachts have gathered at the Camden Yacht Club for the annual Camden Classic Regatta. Featuring a challenging 15+ mile course, the yacht runs from Camden to Brooklin, ME. This, along with the Castine and Eggemoggin races, make up a wonderful three days of classic yacht racing on Penobscot Bay. Camden, Maine is one of the prettiest towns on the coast, and for those not participating, it offers amazing shops, restaurants and an opportunity to really soak in the beauty of mid-coast Maine.

Created in 1988, the National Offshore One-Design Regatta was an immediate success with its unique concept of racing level in larger production boats, its unrivaled post- racing social experiences and its professional race management. The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series grew nationally and remains the most popular weekend racing series in the United States. The Sailing World Regatta Series today encompasses more than larger one-design race boats. Embracing popular fleets at each location, the Regatta Series now features many different boat types: dinghies, multihulls, and keelboats that race under established handicap systems. Sponsors and partners continue to enjoy nightly event-based activation at each yacht club with a targeted and passionate sailing audience.

All events are supported by premier host yacht clubs located in these renown sailing venues. At the conclusion of each regatta, one top-finishing team is selected to compete in the overall season championship, held in the British Virgin Islands in October. The Regatta Series is owned and managed by Sailing World , a Flying Media Group, LLC., property. Follow the Series: #SailingWorld #RegattaSeries #HellyHansen #HHNOOD.

Regatta Time: 7 Yachting Watches

yachting regatta

A number of luxury watch brands have gotten involved in sponsoring sailing teams and events. Some brands have even developed timepieces specifically suited for competitive sailing and other nautical activities, often incorporating some version of the all-important regatta countdown function. Here we run down seven yachting and regatta watches and reveal why they’re ideal companions out on the waves.

1.Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides

Corum has been making watches for yachtsmen since 1960, when it debuted the first Corum Admiral’s Cup watch, named after and inspired by the famous yacht race of the same name. The Admiral’s Cup has since grown to become an entire collection, one of Corum’s core pillars. Numerous variations on the Corum Admiral’s Cup have been introduced over the years, including the Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides . This watch’s movement, Caliber CO 277 — which Corum spent three years working with the Astronomic Observatory of Geneva and French Navy’s oceanographic institute to create — contains a mechanical complication that is eminently useful for someone piloting a boat: a moon-phase-like function that informs the wearer of how strong and how high the tides are, and when high and low tide will next occur. (Tides, of course, are affected by the moon’s relation to the earth and sun.) A hand on the subdial at 12 o’clock indicates the tidal coefficient, or range between high and low tides. A subdial at 6 o’clock tells when the next two tides will occur. Meanwhile, the 9 o’clock display tells the wearer if tides are rising or falling. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock. The Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides has the collection’s hallmark 12-sided case, which is made of titanium coated with blue PVD and measures 45 mm in diameter, and comes on a vulcanized blue rubber strap.

2. Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio

Panerai is much better known for making watches for use underwater rather than above the waves, but the Swiss-Florentine brand began sponsoring the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in 2005 and introduced its first dedicated yachting watch at SIHH 2013. (AT SIHH 2017, the brand took its support of sailing sports to the next level, becoming Official Timekeeper of the America’s Cup.) that The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio (PAM00526) has a lightweight, brushed titanium case, 47 mm in diameter, and is outfitted with Panerai’s in-house Caliber P.9100/R, which powers not only a flyback chronograph but a user-friendly regatta countdown function.

To start the countdown to a regatta (in which perfect timing is crucial, with all boats required to line up behind an imaginary line without crossing it), the owner pushes an orange push-button at 4 o’clock to move the central orange chronograph minute hand back, one minute at a time, until it is at the correct position in relation to the length of the countdown. Next, he presses the chronograph stop/start button at 10 o’clock, which starts the chronograph hands moving, indicating first the minutes and seconds remaining until the start, and then, when the countdown has finished, the time elapsed since the start of the race. At the end of the interval being measured, the push-button at eight o’clock returns all the chronograph hands to zero; if it is operated while the hands are still moving, it activates the return-to-zero (flyback) function of these hands, enabling the wearer to start timing a new interval immediately, without using the stop and reset buttons. The flange around the dial displays a 15-minute scale for the regatta countdown, with the five final minutes distinguished in orange, along with a tachymeter scale that is measured in knots, which enables a sailor to determine the speed of his boat over a defined distance. For more details on this Panerai watch, including the price, click here . The price of the watch is $17,200.00 excl. sales tax (July 2017).

3. Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Rolex Yacht-Master II — the successor to the original Rolex Yacht-Master — debuted in 2007 and introduced a Rolex-exclusive regatta countdown function that can be “programmed” from 1 to 10 minutes and incorporates a mechanical memory that allows it to be reset to the same countdown duration used previously. Once launched, the countdown can also be synchronized on the fly, enabling adjustment to match the official regatta start-time countdown. Programming the countdown is easy, by means of the rotatable Ring Command bezel , a Rolex-developed system linking the bezel to the movement.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II has a 44-mm Rolex Oyster case (available in several precious metals, in Rolex’s proprietary “Rolesium” material, or in a new stainless steel version with blue Cerachrom bezel, shown below.) The watch contains the Rolex manufacture Caliber 4161, which has a COSC chronometer certification and includes a column-wheel chronograph. For more on the Rolex Yacht-Master II, click here .

4. Alpina Sailing Yachttimer Countdown

Not everyone who owns a boat is a millionaire, and the Alpina Sailing Yachttimer Countdown is a yachting watch for those on a slightly tighter timepiece budget. For under $5,000, the owner of this watch gets a clever yachting-specific complication, namely a moving countdown window that counts down from 10 to 1, gradually revealing a red “START” indicator for the start time of a regatta. The Alpina Sailing Yachttimer is a limited edition of only 8,888 pieces. The watch has a 44-mm stainless steel case, with a see-through caseback offering a view of the in-house movement, Caliber AL-880, and comes on a black rubber strap. The price of the watch is $3’695 (July 2017).

5. Perrelet Turbine Yacht

Introduced in 2014, the Perrelet Turbine Yacht — another new complication for the distinctive Turbine collection, which has swiftly become Perrelet’s flagship family — combines the spinning dial-side turbine-style rotor with an integrated windrose function, inspired by the world of yachting, which helps to orient sailors by points of reference and the position of the sun. The Perrelet Turbine Yacht has a substantial, 47-mm-diameter stainless steel case, also available with either black or bronze-toned PVD coating. The turbine rotor on the dial, made of titanium, has 11 blades, echoing the look of a submarine propellor, and rotates above a surface with a maritime-themed parallel-line pattern reminiscent of the teakwood deck of a yacht. The windrose — according to Wikipedia, “a graphic tool used by meteorologists to give a succinct view of how wind speed and direction are typically distributed at a particular location” — is on a bidirectional rotating ring surrounding the dial. prices for the Perrelet Turbine Yacht range from $6,550 to $7,200.

6. Bremont Regatta OTUSA

The U.K.-based Bremont brand has also served as Official Timing partner to the America’s Cup and to the competition’s defending champion, Oracle Team USA. To commemorate the races, Bremont brought out at this year’s Baselworld this COSC-certified regatta timer, the Bremont Regatta OTUSA. The watch has 15- minute and 5-minute countdown displays at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour counter and date aperture at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. Bremont has incorporated into the crown a bit of carbon fiber taken from one of the foils of a 2013 Oracle Team USA AC72 yacht. The case is titanium, 43 mm in diameter, and water resistant to 100 meters. It has a transparent back through which you can see the rotor, decorated with a wave-like pattern and the words “America’s Cup.” Price: $6,895 (July 2017).

7. Ulysse Nardin Marine Regatta Chronograph

Ulysse Nardin tapped two professional yachtsmen, Loïck Peyron and Iain Percy from the Swedish Artemis Racing team (which the brand sponsors), to help design its new regatta timer, the Marine Regatta Chronograph , which debuted at SIHH 2017. The watch is a bi-directional chronograph counter that automatically begins timing the race once the countdown is complete, thus eliminating the need to hit the restart button at the precise moment when the race begins. Official fleet yacht races begin with either a five-, seven- or 10-minute countdown to the starting signal, during which time boats jockey for a position as close to the starting line as possible without crossing it and thus facing major penalties. The movement, Caliber UN-155, is based on the manufacture automatic chronograph Caliber UN-153 and has a three-day power reserve. The 44-mm case is stainless steel and has a fluted bezel with rubber inserts, molded rubber pushers, a screw-down crown and 100-meter water resistance. There are two dial variations, one in ocean blue with signature Artemis Racing yellow and the other in sea foam. There is also a limited-edition series of 35 Marine Regatta Chronographs with black champlevé enamel dials. The regular series is priced at $15,900, and the special edition, at $29,800.

Such a wonderfully informative blog. thanks for sharing

A correction to your Bremont piece: Oracle was the defender of America’s Cup in 2013 and 2017. The current Cup holder is Emirates Team New Zealand. (interestingly, although Omega has sponsored ETNZ since 1995….by far the longest relationship between a watch brand and an AC team…it has never developed a regatta-specific watch , instead issuing a few “ETNZ versions” of Seamaster Diver over the years).

What about the many Ulysse Nardin releases?

title should be 5 ugly regatta watches

yup ! sure is !

imho — Ugly watches? Just exactly what would you consider to be beautiful watches in this category?

I agree Erik, I think these represent the best watches from Rolex (the 2 tone would be best), Bremont, Alpina and Panerai. Other versions are just a bit boring, imho.

I have a omega NZL-32 I think it’s the best looking regtta timer out. It’s a very stunning watch.

I agree. The Omega NZL is beautiful but out of production yes?

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

yachting regatta

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
