For more than seven years it has spun heads from St. Barts to Bali. Now, the rule-breaking 140-foot power trimaran Adastra is up for sale, and could be yours for a cool $12 million.
This futuristic, ocean-crossing projectile was built back in 2012—at a cost of well over $20 million—for Hong Kong–based shipping magnate Antony Marden to cruise Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

But in those seven years, the custom-built, wave-piercing-hulled superyacht has crossed the Atlantic half a dozen times and taken Marden and his wife island-hopping around the globe.
“She’s been the most remarkable boat. Her seaworthiness is quite amazing. We’ve weathered 50-knot winds crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. She just takes everything in her stride,” Marden tells us.
“She’s also extremely economical. Cruising at 10 knots, we burn just 4.5 gallons an hour. That gives us a range of around 10,000 nautical miles. We recently did St. Maarten to Vigo in Spain and had enough fuel left to head back to the Caribbean.”

Designed by Britain’s Shuttleworth Design and built in China by McConaghy Boats , Adastra was created with a single-minded focus on strength and weight reduction. The hulls are made of a super-strong e-glass/Kevlar foam sandwich, with the deck and superstructure constructed from carbon fiber with a lightweight Nomex honeycomb core. Before fuel and water, it tips the scales at just 52 tonnes.
And it’s quick. Powered by a single 1,150 hp Caterpillar C18 straight-six turbo diesel, Adastra has a top speed of 23 knots with a cruising speed—in pretty much any weather—of 17. For backup, it also has a pair of 110 hp Yanmar diesel engines.
Below decks, Hong Kong–based interior designers Jepsen Design squeezed in accommodations for nine guests and six crew in Adastra ‘s slender main hull.

What kind of reaction does the Jetsons-style trimaran get in port? “She’s a total head-turner,” says Marden. “She’s pretty much the only boat anyone looks at. Everyone stops and takes a photo.”
So why is he selling? Marden tells us he’s done all the global cruising he wants to and feels it’s time to let a new owner enjoy this very special yacht.
“After seven years, we’ve pretty much cruised to all the places we want to cruise. Now she’s just not getting enough use. We have another yacht at home, so it’s time to sell.”
Right now Adastra is moored in Nassau in the Bahamas , and later this month will head to Fort Lauderdale ‘s Seahaven Marina for a showing to prospective buyers on July 25 and 26. If you’re in the market for a one-of-a-kind trimaran, click here .

Adastra , or to the stars , as the poet Virgil once said, is not your average superyacht. With its striking spaceship profile, it might look like a concept. Delivered in 2012, this 140-footer has spent nearly a decade exploring the globe.
“We have been lucky enough to spend at least three months on board every year since the build, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and exploring the more traditional cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean,” the owner, requesting anonymity, . “ Adastra is a truly stable and safe oceangoing yacht.” It also happens to be one of the most innovative vessels on the water.
British designer John Shuttleworth has won multiple awards, not to mention nonstop praise, for Adastra . What sets the boat apart are its unusual trio of silver hulls that resemble an outrigger canoe. “The structure is a major engineering achievement,” says Shuttleworth in a video describing the design. “Nobody had ever designed or built a boat like that.
This one-off design maximizes interior space but has a minimal eco-footprint compared to other yachts its size. Courtesy Burgess Yachts
Built by McConaghy Boats in Zhuhai, China, the custom design went through structural analysis, while a computer model of Adastra was tested for wave impact, slamming and the potential durability of the outriggers running through big seas. Constructed from e-glass and Kevlar, these hulls are mated to a carbon-fiber superstructure, so the boat weighs only 49 tons, or the equivalent weight of a 60-foot conventional yacht. Since weight reduction was critical to the trimaran’s performance, McConaghy custom-designed all the components—hatches, port lights, ladders and hinges—to be made of carbon fiber. This lightweight design delivers hydrodynamic efficiency, stability and performance, as well as low fuel consumption and low environmental impact. “It uses a seventh of the amount of fuel” of conventional motor yachts its size,” said Shuttleworth.
“Our hope at the time was that the design would represent consciousness of the environmental issues facing the world, while also giving impetus to changing attitudes towards reducing carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption,” Shuttleworth told.
The design team used its curves and natural light to full effect, with the minimalist, Scandinavian-themed interior. Courtesy Burgess Yachts
Adastra ’s 3.9-foot draft can get into shallow areas that more traditional yachts can’t access, making her ideal for shallow-water areas like the Bahamas. The yacht also has a custom anchoring system, with three anchors that deploy across the bow, stern and along the main hull.
Despite its eco credentials, Adastra is still very much a luxury yacht. With the main hull flared over the water for additional space, the exterior layout allows guests to enjoy several secluded areas and superb communal spaces. The Scandinavian-influenced interior by Jepsen Designs, is minimalist and dominated by the natural light flowing in from curved, wraparound windows and skylights, highlighting the honey-colored woods and neutral color palette of the open-plan living areas. Adastra was designed for nine guests and up to six crew. The full-beam master cabin is aft, connected directly to the main salon, while two guest cabins and the galley are located near the engine compartment.

Superyacht Adastra
42.5m ocean explorer trimaran.
On winning the 2013 Showboats award for naval architecture, Boat International stated. "this yacht will have the best performance in the most sea states of all those presented" . To find out more about the award winning naval architecture used in these designs read the article "Adastra - The search for a seakindly fuel efficient vessel". Read more.
Her slender hulls and streamlined exterior allow her to travel faster in the open ocean and at 17 knots she has a 4,000nm range so can comfortably cross both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at hi-speed. Measurements taken during the sea trials show that her fuel consumption at 10.5 knots is as low as 17 litres per hour when carrying 10% fuel and water. At cruising load (20 tonnes fuel and water) she uses just 25 litres per hour therefore on delivery trips her range is 10,000nm starting with 30,000 litres of fuel.
Adastra takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before, previous vessels like Earthrace and Cable and Wireless were stripped out record breaking machines. The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has led us to further research and develop new thinking on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft. Extensive tank testing and radio controlled model tests in waves have been carried out to analyse stability and performance. Outrigger height has been optimised for ease of motion at sea, and a new outrigger shape has been developed to increase stability in waves.
We have undertaken state of the art structural analysis of all the major components in the yacht in order to achieve the light weight required for very low fuel consumption. The deck and superstructure is constructed from carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is glass/kevlar foam sandwich and the interior is lightweight oak cabinetry using honeycomb panels. To help reduce weight further, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fibre hatches, toilets, portlights and ladders, which are all built specifically for the vessel.
Aerodynamics and hydrodynamics above the water line were carefully considered as we developed the overall exterior shape and we kept the boat streamlined both for air and water passing over the structure. The smooth seamless, unbroken surfaces also help to reduce weight as the outer-skin forms part of the structure to absorb torsional loads.

Exterior Deck
Adastra's 16 metre beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck which offers superb views through a panoramic window and accommodates a lounge area, dining table and navigation station.
Extra space has been created below deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. This area has been split into two sections with a full-width master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment. Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members.
Wheelhouse Deck
The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area and forms part of the cross beam structure.
The vessel's profile has been kept low to reduce the vertical centre of gravity and improve stabilty in waves. The overall shape has been kept streamlined to optimise aerodynamics and hydrodynamics above the water line and the smooth unbroken surfaces help to reduce weight as the outer-skin forms part of the structure to absorb torsional loads.

Step Inside the Adastra Trimaran Yacht
Adastra is one of the world's most recognizable yachts; we invite you for a look inside this amazing vessel.
By Kim Ayling
Despite being first launched almost 10 years ago, the Adastra yacht continues to be a marvel. Built by renowned Australian shipbuilders, McConaghy Boats , Adastra’s sleek trimaran design has made her one of the world’s most recognizable yachts; in fact, her striking stature saw designer John Shuttleworth receive a coveted Neptune award for most innovative design at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards.
At 139.5ft, Adastra is a comfortable fit in the superyacht category. However, to keep her as light as possible, her designers and builders undertook a structural analysis of all of her major components with virtually every element custom built. Her three hulls are made of e-glass and Kevlar foam, while her superstructure is constructed from carbon fiber with a Nomex core. This combination of ultra-lightweight materials and careful design means that she remains impressively light despite her size, weighing in at 52 tons.
This steadfast commitment to a lightweight design has ensured that the Adastra yacht has remarkably low fuel consumption – so much so, in fact, that she is capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean not once but twice before needing to refuel with a max range of 10,000nm, dramatically reducing her environmental impact. Adastra ’s lightness also has a significant impact on her speed, with the eye-catching yacht boasting a top speed of 22.5 knots, and an all-weather cruising speed of around 17 knots.

The unique vessel was originally custom-built at McConaghy’s Chinese shipyard for Hong Kong-based shipping magnate, Anto Marden, who commissioned Adastra as an explorer yacht for himself and his family. And it appears that she has now served Marden’s purpose – as of 2019, she has been on the lookout for a new owner to continue her adventure.
It is not just Adastra’s exteriors that are a design marvel. One of the big challenges in building this yacht came from trying to fulfill the owner’s brief for a lightweight ship capable of navigating even the most challenging conditions, while still retaining all of the luxury and onboard comforts expected of a yacht of this size.

As we mentioned above, a custom solution was the only way to guarantee this, with a pared-back yet luxurious finish provided by Jepsen Designs – a Hong Kong-based studio with Danish architect Inge Strompf-Jepsen at its helm. Adastra’s uber-stylish interiors combine Scandi minimalism with uncompromising practicality: honey-colored wood, cool neutral tones and smooth curved lines flow throughout, with flashes of beachy-blue completing the aesthetic.

Panoramic views are provided by domed wraparound windows in the main lounge area, with skylights overhead ensuring an abundance of natural light. The design tricks don’t stop there, with the main hull cleverly flared over the water’s edge to secure additional onboard room.

Adastra offers space for up to nine guests: her full-width owner’s cabin sits in a section of the main hull and is accessed via the saloon, with two additional guest cabins (each containing one double and one single bed), as well as room for a five to six-person crew, found forward of the engine room on the lower decks.
As a vessel designed for long journeys around the world, plenty of space to relax on board was essential for Adastra. Her 52.5ft beam allows for a spacious saloon which accommodates a stylishly curved lounge area on a slightly raised section at the fore, as well as a central formal dining area.
From the saloon, stairs at the front of the ship lead to a foredeck with a roomy sunbed, where extra protection from the midday heat can come from a retractable awning. The equally appealing aft deck offers further lounging space, as well as a dining and bar area perfect for al-fresco meals, which can be enjoyed no matter the weather thanks to a hard-top cover.
Adastra’s plentiful outdoor space can be further extended via the garage door, which folds out to create a diving platform. She also offers additional storage capabilities for not one but two tenders, giving her new owner even more scope for on board adventure.

From the very beginning, Adastra was a yacht built for adventure. Although she was initially commissioned for island hopping around Southeast Asia, where her owner has several private islands, she is truly capable of navigating virtually any of the world’s oceans. Under Marden’s ownership, she has seen many a destination, including the sunny coasts of Europe, the shores of the Caribbean, and everywhere in between.
The Adastra yacht also has an exceptionally shallow draft of just 3.9ft, allowing her to venture into bays and harbors that would be completely off-limits to other ships of her size, making her perfect for isolated island areas. And of course, her remarkably low fuel consumption means she can head into the remotest of regions for extended periods without a worry.
Another of Marden’s priorities when commissioning a custom yacht from McConaghy Boats was seaworthiness; a good-looking vessel that couldn’t perform in all conditions wouldn’t cut it. Adastra’s trimaran design makes her impressively stable and comfortable, no matter the weather – Marden has reported heading out into ferocious gales that no other superyacht could handle. However, while she may be able to handle adverse conditions, her multiple sun decks do make agreeable weather the best way to enjoy this magnificent vessel.
Adastra is currently for sale with Burgess Yachts for $10m.

The Adastra Trimaran Is a Luxury Adventure Yacht Unlike Any Other
Even for millionaire playboys, it’s hard to stand out in a crowd. In the world’s most exclusive marinas — think Monaco and Miami Beach — it’s no longer enough to sail in on a massive yacht. These days, it’s more about panache. And few luxury boats boast the supervillain-esque swagger of the M/Y Adastra . The best part: It’s for sale.
From above, the 140-foot trimaran’s aggressive stance and exaggerated hull make it clear this is no ordinary pleasure boat. The lines are so striking that the photos look more like a concept rendering than a real-life boat in the water. That’s precisely what master boat designer John Shuttleworth of Britain’s Shuttleworth Design intended. Hong Kong shipping magnate Antony Marden commissioned the ultra-luxurious craft to host his closest family and friends on jaunts around the world. He demanded, in his words, “a serious passage maker and world-class head-turner from Ibiza to Bali.” Nearly every aspect of the ship was custom built in China by McConaghy Boats. The cabinetry, hatches, ladders, portlights, and even the hinges were all specifically fabricated for the Adastra to conserve weight.
Features include a full-width master bedroom with en suite bath, twin guest cabins, and a swanky saloon with a dining room, a navigation station, and an oversized lounge area with a high-tech multimedia setup. The built-in garage can accommodate a 10-foot tender and also doubles as a large dive platform. The yacht’s entire superstructure is wrapped in carbon fiber with a Nomex honeycomb core and a glass and Kevlar foam sandwich hull. All of which ensures it’s extremely lightweight (and extremely expensive to boot). With an oversized Caterpillar C18 straight-six turbo-diesel pushing 1,150 horsepower, the ship boasts a top speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots.
Thanks to its state-of-the-art fabrication, it’s not only built for speed, but for long-range ocean voyaging as well. Marden told Robb Report , “She’s also extremely economical. Cruising at 10 knots, we burn just 4.5 gallons an hour. That gives us a range of around 10,000 nautical miles. We recently did St. Maarten to Vigo in Spain and had enough fuel left to head back to the Caribbean.” Transpacific pleasure cruise anyone?

In a quarterly earnings call with investors on February 6, 2024, Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley outlined Ford's plans for EVs, hybrids, and vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs). The TLDR version: Ford's going to keep pushing all three.
What Ford and other automakers may have seen as a straight transition path to widespread vehicle electrification has more curves, turns, and roundabouts than initially anticipated. Multiple factors are in play with EV adoption, from harder-to-get EV tax credits and unexpected cold weather and climate change effects on EVs to changes in EV development and investment strategies by global vehicle brands.

It's fun to dream, especially when it comes to high-end cars. The following is a list of the ten most expensive cars that were up for sale at one point or another (and two honorable mentions). The list does not include high-dollar auction starlets or inflated resale-valued cars. The prices listed were the amount paid when each car was (or will be) sold new. While you may be able to guess there is a Bugatti or two floating around, some others might surprise you.
Let's face it: Americans love their trucks. Sure, it's nice to zip around the city in a Mini Cooper or blast off down an interstate on-ramp in a Corvette Z06, but when it comes to the gritty, gutty day-to-day grind of getting real life done, there is nothing quite like stepping up into a high-riding workhorse.
But, in the not-so-distant past, that feeling of invincibility has often been tamped down by those trucks' insatiable need for fuel. It's hard to get much accomplished when you spend half of your day at the gas station. Thankfully, technology is advancing, and even though some are ready to do away with the fossil-fueled era of the autoverse, the truth is that internal combustion engines (ICE) are not going away anytime soon.

The Trimaran Adastra Superyacht by John Shuttleworth [17 pics]
by twistedsifter
The Adastra is the result of more than five years of design and planning. The stunning 42.5 meter (139.4 ft) trimaran is currently being built in China for Hong Kong Clients, Anto and Elaine Marden. Designed and engineered by the world-renowned John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs, the Adastra is a beautiful machine and I can’t wait to see the finished product.
THE ADASTRA BY JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH YACHT DESIGNS
“Adastra” is the result of more than 5 years of design and discussion with the owners, to build a yacht that meets the needs of a very experienced ocean voyaging couple and their family, and to provide the level of comfort and style that would be expected in a yacht of this class and size. No effort has been spared in the challenge to produce a beautiful yacht that will have low fuel consumption and yet provide excellent sea keeping qualities and luxurious accommodation.
“Adastra” takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before, previous vessels like “Earthrace” and “Cable and Wireless” were stripped out record breaking machines. The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has led us to further research and to develop new thinking on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft. Extensive tank testing and radio controlled model tests in waves have been carried out to analyze stability and performance. Outrigger height has been optimized for ease of motion at sea, and a new outrigger shape has been developed to increase stability in waves.
John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs has undertaken a state of the art structural analysis of all the major components in the yacht in order to achieve the light weight required for very low fuel consumption. All this has resulted in the exceptional vessel that is nearing completion in China.
A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull (vaka) and two smaller outrigger hulls (amas), attached to the main hull with lateral struts (akas). The design and names for the trimaran components are derived from the original proa constructed by native Pacific Islanders. [Source: Wikipedia ]
Adastra’s 16 metre beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck which offers superb views through a panoramic window and accommodates a lounge area, dining table, and navigation station. A forward facing door through the saloon window gives easy access to a large sunbed on the foredeck. The aft deck has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard, further aft of this there is space for a 4.9 metre tender and directly below is a garage which can store a 3.1 metre tender.
The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large dive platform. The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area and forms part of the cross beam structure.
THE ADASTRA Continued…
The Superstructure is carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is Glass/Kevlar foam sandwich and the interior is light weight oak cabinetry using honeycomb panels. To help reduce weight, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fibre hatches, portlights, ladders and even hinges, which are all built specifically for the vessel.
A SiMON_ integrated ships monitoring system monitors fuel, security, pump sensors, electrical, lights, etc. The vessel has a fully automated fuel management system which includes an Alfa Laval system for cleaning the fuel.
The anchoring system is unique with 3 anchors all driven by carbon fibre drum winches run by hydraulics. The primary anchor is a custom 130kg Bruce style anchor that deploys out of the starboard wing. The second anchor is 80kg and deploys out of the bow with a carbon fibre arm. The third anchor is 60kg which deploys out of the port wing and will be used as a stern anchor.

JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH YACHT DESIGNS
John Shuttleworth Yacht Design, Ltd., is based in West Sussex, England and has gained a reputation for designing fast, strong, and safe boats. Their designs are consistent race winners, and several have broken and still hold some of the toughest long-distance ocean sailing records. Shuttleworth’s design team has developed the “Integrated Structure,” resulting in boats that are lighter, stiffer, and stronger than any previous multihull designs. They are now using this technology to design power multihulls, and sail-assisted power boats, where significant savings in fuel consumption and increased range can be achieved.

‘adastra’ is a 42.5m power trimaran which was conceived for a couple (anto and elaine marden) for long range cruising. the yacht uses a trimaran shape that allows it to have multiple hulls. this is the second largest of its kind and can be controlled from a distance with an iPad. the superyacht’s aerodynamics and hydrodynamics were carefully considered by john shuttleworth yacht designs who have drafted a streamlined exterior body whose three hulls are slender in form. their shape ensures smooth and faster travel, allowing the vessel to move comfortably over water at hi-speeds, as is evidenced by its performance–fuel consumption at 10.5 knots is as low as 17 litres per hour when carrying 10% fuel and water; at cruising load (20 tonnes fuel and water) she uses only 25 litres per hour so that on delivery trips;her range is 10,000 miles starting with 30,000 litres of fuel; at 17 knots she has a 4,000 mile range.
an intense structural analysis of all of the major components of ‘adastra’ were taken to achieve the lightest weight possible required to establish its low-fuel consumption. structurally this has been realized through a deck and superstructure made from carbon fibre, with a nomex honey comb core. the hull is a sandwich composition of glass and kevlar foam, while the interior is oak framework with cabinetry completed by honeycomb panels. in addition, all aspects of the boat have been custom built accordingly to further reduce the overall volume as seen for example in the carbon fibre hatches. the luxury boat’s surface is a composition of seamless, unbroken surfaces, this outer skin forming part of the framework that absorbs torsional loads.
a 16m long beam results in an expansive main deck offering panoramic views with a lounge area, dining table and navigation station. a forward facing door through the saloon window allows for easy access to the sun bed located on the foredeck. the afterdeck has additional seating as well as a bar, and space for a 4.9 metre tender with a garage directly below which can house a 3.1 metre tender, and whose door has been designed to fold out and function as a large diving platform.
the deck is constructed with carbon fiber with a nomex honeycomb core and the huss is a kevlar/glass combination. the interior is a beautiful lightweight oak design mixed with honeycomb panels. all of this keeps the weight down so the yacht can travel faster and longer. the yacht launched in april 2012.

Power trimaran concept and superstructure materials of Adastra
The superyacht is based on a power trimaran concept. The designers incorporated luxury into the trimaran design to make it suitable for ocean voyaging.
Structural analysis was undertaken for all the components of the ship. A computer model of Adastra was tested for wave impact, side slamming and impact of the outrigger riding through waves.
The superstructure of the luxury yacht is made of carbon fibre with a Nomex honeycomb core. The hull is of resin infused epoxy with E-glass and Kevlar skins. The interior is composed of carbon and E-glass honeycomb panels and oak veneered cabinets.
The beam of the ship is 16m and the hull draft is 1.12m. It weighs 52t and has a range of 4,000nm.
The naval architect of the superyacht was John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs. Exterior styling was done by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs and Orion Shuttleworth Design, while the structural design was by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs and Applied Structural Analysis. Adastra’s interiors were designed by Jepsen Designs, of Hong Kong.
Construction of the lightweight superyacht by McConaghy Boats
McConaghy has built the components of Adastra to custom design to reduce its weight. The in-house built components include fibre hatches, portlights, ladders and hinges, all made of carbon.
More than 350 craftsmen, designers and engineers of McConaghy in both China and Australia worked on the construction of the yacht. The outrigger of the superyacht was specially designed by optimising its height, allowing easier movement on the waves.
Performance of the unique fuel-efficient Adastra yacht
Adastra was designed to be lightweight for low fuel consumption. The superyacht has a maximum speed of 22.5k and its range at 17k is 4,000 miles.
A SiMON 2 integrated ship surveillance system monitors fuel, security, pump sensors, electrical and lighting systems of the ship.
With a freshwater capacity of 2,700l, Adastra has two 800gph freshwater makers. The vessel’s displacement (light) is 49t while at maximum cruising (with 15,000l fuel) it is 64.8t. The yacht consumes 90l an hour at a speed of 13k and 120l each hour at 17k.
Accommodation and luxury features of Anto Marden’s superyacht
Adastra can accommodate nine guests and up to six crew. The accommodation is provided on the below deck, which is partitioned into two sections. The master cabin is located aft.
Two guest cabins, crew accommodation and the galley are located near the engine compartment. The central hull has been flared above the waterline to create some additional space on the below deck.
The main deck houses a saloon which encompassed a lounge area, dining table and navigation station. It provides views of the ocean through a window. The saloon is directly accessible from the master cabin.
The sunbed is on the foredeck while the aft deck has a sofa and bar area and a dining area. There is a raised platform between the saloon and the aft. The pilot house, accommodating the main helm station, is situated on this platform. The station has seating for two.
Tenders on board Adastra
Adastra can accommodate two tenders. A 4.9m space is made available on the aft deck for a tender. A garage below the deck can shelter a 3.1m tender. The fold-out design of the garage door provides diving space.
Engines fitted and anchor system of the Adastra trimaran superyacht
Adastra has a single Caterpillar C18-1150hp engine at 2,300rpm and two Yanmar 110hp outrigger engines rated at 3,200rpm. Two 36kW generators are linked to the outrigger engines and one 26kW generator is installed in the main engine room.
The anchoring system of Adastra comprises three anchors. The 130kg Bruce style primary anchor is deployed out of the starboard wing. The 80kg second anchor is deployed out of the bow with an arm. The third is a stern anchor and weighs 60kg. It is deployed out of the port wing.
The anchors are driven on hydraulics-run winches. The carbon-fibre winches and anchor arms were custom-built. The arms fold inside the yacht, thus remaining invisible.
The vessel features an Alfa Laval fuel cleaning system for cleaning the engine.

ADASTRA for sale
A cutting-edge trimaran delivered in 2012 by McConaghy Yachts for an experienced yacht owner, ADASTRA is designed for exploration and can take you around the world. Exceptionally fuel efficient, she can cross the Atlantic twice before needing to refuel and has a transpacific range of 10,000nm. Her shape is designed for efficiency, stability and performance, and she performs very highly in all three.
Built for adventuring, a shallow draft of 1.2m (3.9ft) means the vessel can explore a wider range of harbours and islands than larger, more traditional yachts. A 16m beam offers a cleverly designed and light-filled interior that feels spacious, with spectacular views through the panoramic windows. The foredeck has a large area for sunbathing, and the artfully designed garage door folds out to form a large diving platform.
Below deck, extra space has been created by flaring the central hull directly above the waterline, housing a full-beam master cabin and two further guest cabins, as well as crew accommodation. ADASTRA can welcome nine guests and up to six crew members.
The hulls of the yacht are formed from e-glass/Kevlar foam sandwich, with the deck and superstructure made of carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb core. This makes ADASTRA incredibly lightweight, weighing just 49 tonnes before water and fuel. Almost all elements of the craft are custom built, including carbon fibre ladders, hatches and portlights. A unique anchoring system means all three of her anchors are driven by carbon fibre drum winches operated by hydraulics.

“When an owner embarks on the great journey of building their dream vessel, it’s critical to make the journey enjoyable. My wife and I had the pleasure of commissioning not one but two performance cruising yachts with McConaghy Australia. Both have exceeded our expectations.
McConaghy build beautiful, strong, light, fast and reliable boats. That was proven with our first yacht Satori– launched in 2001, so we decided to ask McConaghy to build us our second yacht ,Shearwater – a 57-foot performance cruiser. Shearwater is ALL carbon. McConaghy explored all areas to reduce weight, while allowing all the creature comforts.
I cannot oversell the pleasure we experienced building Shearwater with McConaghy. Eric and his team are quite extraordinary to work with, professional and talented – to observe what they can produce on the workshop floor was a wonder.”
