Yacht service: getting your sailing yacht ready for the season

Oyster Dock

A guide to luxury yacht servicing with oyster yachts

Maintenance is a vital part of yacht ownership, but here at oyster, we recognise that time spent on pre-season checks can make all the difference between a frustrating start to the season, and a perfect start to the season..

With that in mind, we’ve put together our guide to servicing and getting your Oyster ready for the season ahead. From the water maker to the sail checks, to the winches and the main engine service, this is our owner’s handbook. Following our advice will allow you to stay on top of the annual maintenance and ensure you are ready to enjoy a great season of sailing.

Trust your yacht maintenance log

At Oyster, every owner receives a maintenance manual and a logbook when they take ownership of their yacht, which allows you to easily track your yacht’s maintenance history. Your Oyster logbook contains a weekly, monthly, bi-annual, annual, five-year and ten-year servicing checklist, which you can use to ensure you’re properly caring for your yacht.

Oyster owners have the added benefit that we keep all the original plans and build logs on file, so buyers can refer to the original intentions when your yacht was specified and built. Keeping your logbook updated will also help increase the residual value of your yacht, as new buyers prioritise well-maintained boats.

Trust your yacht maintenance log

How long does a yacht service take?

When carried out by Oyster, an annual yacht service takes two weeks with the yacht out of the water. This allows for the application of new antifouling paint and servicing of the rudder, propeller, seacocks and thrusters. It is also a good time to polish the hull and superstructure.

Each Oyster yacht service is unique to the boat, and it depends on its current condition and your plans for the season ahead. Our  service team  will create an honest list of requirements, scoping everything from canvas work to winches, meaning you can set sail for the season, confident in the knowledge you are ready to take on anything.

What to expect from your pre-season check and annual yacht haul-out

Annual pre-season checks and preparations for an Oyster may include:

  • Sails valeted
  • A visual check of your rigging or official survey of your yacht rig, if in commercial use
  • Engines and generators serviced
  • All systems checked over – air-conditioning, refrigeration, LPG, electrics, and electronics
  • Annual safety equipment checks

And once she’s lifted out of the water for her annual haul-out:

  • Antifouling, repainting, polishing
  • Service of propeller, shaft, and cutlass bearings
  • Rudder and keel checks
  • Replacement of anodes
  • Service of seacocks and thrusters

Yacht maintenance overview: how to properly care for your yacht.

  • June 7, 2021

Yacht maintenance is a crucial element of yacht ownership and operation. That gorgeous yacht sitting at the dock represents a substantial investment, and just like any asset, it must be protected and maintained to ensure reliable operation and to preserve value.

Maintaining your vessel is imperative, not just for peace of mind while operating, but for the safety of those aboard during use. The larger the yacht, maintenance can get more complex as the scale and complexity of the systems aboard the vessel increase.

yacht repair and maintenance

At a high level, an owner should approach yacht maintenance by doing the following: When purchasing your new or used yacht, be sure to thoroughly ask your yacht broker or salesperson questions about maintenance and servicing schedules. Additionally, get familiar with the manufacturer’s ownership manuals as they contain a plethora of information regarding maintenance. Moreover, map out your cleaning and maintenance routines that will go hand-in-hand with using your yacht (more on these below). Lastly, if unsure what to do or how to handle a specific situation, never simply “wing” it. Always consult a professional to ensure the yacht is properly cared for and that you’re adhering to manufacturer recommended service and maintenance needs.

YACHT MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

For most yachts 40 feet and larger, the yacht will sit in the water full time. Regular care and maintenance is especially important in this scenario. For boaters in the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf’s waters have high levels of salinity which makes the water especially corrosive. For saltwater boaters, staying on top of yacht maintenance is crucial.

While not exhaustive, the following items are a good starting point for a regular care and maintenance schedule. Be sure to consult your manufacturer’s manuals and yacht servicing professionals for a more detailed yacht maintenance schedule.

Washing and cleaning the yacht  – Some owners may have the boat cleaned every month, but for those wanting their vessel to always be in excellent shape, every two weeks is better. All visible elements on the exterior of the yacht should be washed and cleaned. Streaks and dust should be removed. Any bird droppings should be eradicated. Additionally, canvas covers can be removed and all upholstery wiped down. Metal will be cleaned and polished, and woodwork scrubbed. Yacht owners can expect to pay on average $2-3 per foot for a thorough exterior cleaning.  Some yacht detail companies can also clean the interior which can involve dusting, cleaning countertops, toilets, sinks and more.

Clean the bottom of the yacht  – Once a month is a good rule of thumb, but in hotter, warmer water months, you may want to have this done more frequently. Similarly in cooler weather months, you could go a bit longer than a month. Having the barnacles cleaned off the bottom part of the boat on a regular basis is important. A smooth clean hull is crucial to long-term care and efficient performance of the yacht. Typically this involves a diver cleaning the hull from the water line and below to ensure all barnacles and other forms of algae and marine life are cleaned from the boat. The diver should also ensure all running gear below the water is free of barnacle growth. Yacht owners can expect to pay on average $2-3 per foot for an underwater cleaning. Alternatively, some services may charge hourly rates instead.

Also note that being in a higher current area can cause more frequent growth and the need for more frequent cleaning. It is good practice to ask the local dockmaster at your marina or a neighbor nearby how often they recommend getting the bottom cleaned.

Systems check  – Your yacht has a large number of systems that need to remain functional for a pleasant yachting experience. Air conditioning, pumps, exhaust and air intake, batteries, coolant levels, and fuel and lubrication are just a sampling of the systems that operate during regular usage. While some owners are comfortable checking the status of some or all of these systems themselves, other owners will opt for a regular systems check by a professional. During the season of regular use, it’s advised to have all systems checked once a month. This type of service will likely cost in the $200-$250 range for yachts in the 40-50 foot size range, and more for larger yachts.  After the service is performed, the service professional will provide you with a service report summary and any recommended courses of action.

Waxing the boat  – Every three to six months depending on sun exposure, the visible (topside of the boat from the waterline to the rub rail) parts of the boat should be waxed. When the hull is colored (such as blue or black), waxing frequency may increase.

Annual Engine, Drivetrain and Generator Service   – Once a year, you should have your yacht serviced. Haul out is not required, but it can be good practice to do so in order to check the bottom and running gear. This annual service is not too dissimilar from when car owners bring in their vehicles for regular servicing; all necessary items on the main engines, transmissions and generators will be serviced. The costs for annual servicing that includes engine maintenance will vary widely depending on your vessel, but smaller yachts can expect to pay approximately $3,000 (more if yacht is hauled out to check and service bottom and running gear). The costs increase with larger yachts.

Repainting the bottom of the yacht  – While every two years is considered by many to be sufficient, it’s good practice to haul out the yacht once a year to check the condition of and possibly repaint the bottom of the yacht’s hull (consider doing this alongside annual servicing). As the bottom of your vessel is cleaned and barnacles scraped off, the paint layers can thin and deteriorate. Costs will vary, but owners can expect to pay approximately $50/foot for a repainting of the hull.

Air conditioning system maintenance  – In hot climates such as Florida’s, air conditioning systems need regular maintenance. The air conditioning lines on a yacht in Florida should be acid flushed every six months to ensure a proper cleaning and removal of anything that has attached itself in the lines.

ADDITIONAL YACHT MAINTENANCE TIPS

1. Saltwater can lead to corrosion, so a few simple maintenance tasks after each run can be good practice. After each run, do a simple visual inspection of the engine room to check for any leaks. Also, be sure to give the boat a hose down to remove any salt particles. If possible, knowing how to flush your engine with fresh water after every run can be quite useful in maintaining your engine performance.

2. Keep a yacht maintenance log. Log all maintenance work and servicing done on the yacht with appropriate details and dates. Not only will this serve you well as you can know exactly what has been done and when, but this log can be useful to show potential buyers when you go to sell your yacht.

3. Have your mechanic pull oil samples from the engines, transmissions and generator to send to a lab for testing. The results will serve as a baseline on the health of the components and can often detect a possible issue before it becomes apparent otherwise. Keep records of the results for future reference.

4. If something goes wrong, use your mobile device to take a picture or video of the issue no matter how big or small the issue might seem. From engine codes to an odd noise coming from a various component, having documented evidence of the issue can be crucial in ensuring a speedy repairs process. On occasion, issues can be fickle and technicians might have a difficult time duplicating the reported issue. With your photo or video evidence, they can move quicker through the diagnosing process and move on to getting the appropriate parts or service needed.

5. If you have minor repairs that are not preventing you from enjoying the yacht, considering combining these repairs with regular service appointments. Examples of such minor repairs might be a small, interior light that isn’t working or a small tear in a seat cushion.

YACHT MAINTENANCE RESOURCES & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Yacht builders design engines and components with a countless number of vendors.

Note that there is not one specific engine manufacturer that is better than another in every situation. Depending on the yacht that it is going into, the application and what size and horespower is needed, a specific engine manufacturer might be recommended.  For instance, Cummins makes great smaller engines in the 300-715 horsepower range, CAT is most common in the 850-1925 horsepower range, MAN is common in the 800-1800 horsepower range, MTU is most common in the 1200-2600 horsepower range and Volvo is typically in the 300-900 horsepower range.

It’s common for individuals to inquire about what engine is best when they’re considering a yacht purchase. Be sure to ask your yacht broker or salesperson for more information and advice.

For owners looking to learn more about engine maintenance, use the links and information below to discover what your engine manufacturer recommends for maintenance. This is by no means an all-encompassing list. However, these are some of the larger engine manufactuer names in the industry:

  • MTU Diesel Engines  have an extraordinary history extending as far back as 1900. MTU is now a subsidiary of Rolls Royce Power Systems. The MTU Series 4000 Diesel has accumulated over 180,000,000 hours of operation.  Their engines are developed for a world of large commercial and passenger ships.
  • Caterpillar Marine Power Systems . Caterpillar Marine has the most comprehensive range of engine types in the world. CAT engines fall into several divisions including Cruisers, Fishing and Pleasure Craft. Worldwide dealer support is a powerful asset when considering engine types.
  • MAN Yacht Engines . The story of MAN Engines can be charted back to 1758 when St. Antony Ironworks began operation in Oberhausen Germany. Owners of a MAN Yacht Engine must sign off on approval of their merchandise, and that is just the introduction of their superb protection.
  • Cummins Marine . Worldwide support is a necessary factor when choosing your power plant. Cummins Marine is another recognizable brand that has been building marine engines since 1919. The Cummins Service Network is one of the widest in the world and extremely robust.
  • Volvo Penta Marine Leisure .  Volvo Penta has carved out a vast swath of the marine propulsion industry.  While other engine builders cater to the superyacht niche, Volvo Penta delivers marine systems for yachts in the 60 to 120-foot range. The company has built up a strong group of stern-drive engines for powerboats and a series of engines for sailboats.
  • Mercury Marine . Mercury is a well-known brand, and the Mercruiser line of engines are favorites on boats in the 40-foot range or less. Mercury carries a worldwide dealer network. This is a significant advantage when deciding on power. The company offers an extensive line of sterndrive and inboards. The Mercury Diesel is making inroads into larger boats and yachts.

While many yacht owners opt to leave the inner-operations of the vessel to yacht servicing and maintenance professionals, some owners enjoy gaining additional understanding of the various components that allow the yacht to operate. If you’re in the latter group, the below explains in further detail some of the systems and components that make up your yacht:

Fuel & Lubrication

Regular servicing of the fuel and lubrication systems is important. Typical fuel system problems will involve saltwater intrusion and corrosion. Proper maintenance might include draining the fuel tank, ensuring any sediment is cleaned out and replacing the fuel filters. Since emission controls bind modern diesel engines, additives in the fuel are now required. Ensure you’re using the proper marine diesel fuel by asking a professional and reading the manuals.

Clogged filters and a bad fuel pump can lead to fuel starvation. If a fuel pump is pushing air through the system, a number of problems can occur: the fuel pump bearings wear out quickly and injectors are not taking in the fuel at pressurized levels.

Reference manufacturer manuals to ensure the proper engine oil is being used.

Marine coolant is crucial to regular yacht operation. Just as oil, owners need to follow manufacturer guidelines. Marine coolants reduce corrosion, improve boiling points, neutralize engine by-products and stabilize engine temperatures. It is good practice to check the coolant before every trip.

Exhaust and Air Intake

Attentive owners will monitor smoke discharge at startup from the exhaust. While a small whiff of black smoke isn’t typically a concern, anything more might require further investigation. Examine your air filters regularly as they are key to engine performance and longevity.

Cylinder Heads and Blocks

Unless you are a professional mechanic with diesel system experience, a visual check is all that can to be done. Head bolts and valve timing adjustments are all torqued. Experienced owners who require pristine conditions may clean the engine area and cylinder block with degreaser products. Follow degreaser instructions closely and check with the owner’s manual. We typically recommend leaving any form of engine maintenance to professionals.

Electrical Systems

Anything electrical is typically left to professionals, but yacht owners can use common sense regarding simple oversight of the electrical system. The following are a few items to check on a regular basis: Ensure proper capacity levels in all batteries, examine connections into the engine for anything that may have worked its way loose, check that wire connections are properly sealed and that no evidence of corrosion exists, and replace bulbs on interior and running lights throughout the yacht.

Transmissions

The gearbox in your yacht is a mundane piece of fundamental machinery. There is little owners can do if a transmission starts to cause troubles. Visual inspection and checking fluids are necessary maintenance steps. Otherwise, a professional is required if anything goes wrong. Transmission problems are deceiving, and the frequent result is being dead in the water. Keep the equipment clean from saltwater and any surplus oil. As previously stated, regular oil sample analysis at your oil change intervals can help spot any potential issues before they cause major damage.

YACHT MAINTENANCE COSTS

The commonly-quoted rule of thumb in yachting is that owners should expect to pay 10% of the purchase price in annual operating costs. Yacht maintenance is certainly a part of this 10% estimate (along with other costs such as insurance, docking fees, fuel and more).

This rule of thumb, however, can vary depending on your purchase. If you purchase a new construction yacht, the 10% estimate is likely high due to the higher purchase price, the fact that fewer things will break on a newer vessel and that a number of such items are covered under the new yacht warranty. If you’re acquiring a used yacht for a lower purchase price, the maintenance and repairs cost will likely be higher.

When inquiring about a specific yacht, be sure to ask your broker or salesperson about projected maintenance costs.

Protecting your investment in your yacht is a necessary part of owning a luxury vessel.  Harsh saltwater conditions require a regular painting and coating treatment to keep your boat sailing on clear waters.

Painting/Maintenance options for your vessel include:

  • Marine Paint (single or two-part)
  • Gel Coating, Ceramic Coating, Bottom Painting, Varnishing and Carpentry

Prop Speed Painting

Painting and Coating will breathe new life into your vessel. It will prevent damage to the hull and arrest the growth of marine organisms that attach to fiberglass and metal.  Barnacles, algae, seaweed and other marine organisms accumulate on hulls and eventually lead to surface drag, lower performance, decreased speeds, higher fuel costs and even damage to propellors and other underwater mechanics.

Our painting and coating solutions include modified epoxies, ablative, thin-film, soft and vinyl.  Here is a rundown on the most popular options:

Marine Painting

When determining what paint/coating system is best for your vessel, the decision will come down to three elements: time, level of finish, and budget.

Traditional one-part paint (alkyd enamel) applies right from the dispenser and evaporates quickly. It has good weatherproofing qualities, and the base can be modified for gloss, hardness, or longevity by using various additives.

The two-part polyurethanes are formed by mixing components. That mix triggers a chemical reaction that forms the cure surface. When comparing the two processes, the two-part product dries quicker and offers a higher level of finish, a shinier gloss, color retention, hardness, longevity, chemical and abrasion resistance, and overall compound integrity. Consequently, the two-part process costs more and requires more time and labor.

Gelcoat Painting

A gel coat treatment is resin-based on often used on newly manufactured boats. Once applied, it dries into a hard, shell-like casing. Gel coating is designed to be UV protective and resistant to harsh chemicals. Since yacht hulls are often exposed to chemical vapors, this protection proves invaluable. A gel coat finish is durable and, when properly maintained, can last for decades without major repairs.

Boat maintenance and repair

Ceramic Coating

Marine-grade ceramic coating is highly resistant to wear, scratching, and hull damage. The ceramic layer of protection protects paint and fiberglass. Ceramic coating protects at the molecular level with a comprehensive seal. Contaminants do not penetrate the surface, and any residue can be removed with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Bottom Painting

The bottom of a vessel, usually submerged in saltwater, is vulnerable to sea organisms, including acorn barnacles, zebra mussels, and microscopic bacteria that can cause hull drag, higher fuel costs and repair costs associated with the hull drag.

The correct yacht bottom painting treatment increases the longevity and performance of the vessel. The key ingredients in antifouling bottom paints include copper, biocides, algaecides, Teflon, vinyl, and proprietary two-part bottom coatings that create a hard, slippery biofilm that prevents organisms from attaching the hull.

Yacht Painting

One of the best ways to keep your props and other underwater metal in working order is by protecting them. One of the best ways is a professional application of Propspeed.

Propspeed uses a super slick “foul release” film that is safe for marine life. It is meant to last at least a year and keep running gear and any other underwater metals free of marine growth and protected against corrosion.

Vessels that sit in the water for extended periods have the greatest need for this type of protection. Our expert technicians can provide a professional application to protect your underwater metal.

Onyx Yacht Detailing & Maintenance ____________________

Onyx yacht detailing & maintenance.

Much a luxury car, your yacht boat needs regular detailing and maintenance work to keep it sparkling on the seas and humming along the waves. Detailing and maintenance include exterior boat detailing, washing, boat waxing, buffing, polishing, interior detailing, and monthly systems check.

Buffing & Waxing vs Polishing

There is an ongoing debate on buffing and waxing your yacht versus polishing it. Though similar, the processes are different. In the trade, professionals use polishing compounds, manual polishing, and rotary machines to buff out scratches. Most craftsmen use powerful buffing and polishing tools to remove blemishes, scuffs, oxidation, and other imperfections. Waxing usually follows the buffing process. Polishing a vessel restores the “good as new” finish. Using a high-gloss polish delivers a brilliant shine.

Detailing & Maintenance

Additional Options

Other options include wet sanding and high-speed buffing to give your vessel a showroom look and erase oxidation stains and minor scratches on fiberglass and Gelcoat surfaces. While we are making the vessel’s exterior shine, we also inspect the vessel from top to bottom.

Hi Veronika and Team Thank you for a fantastic day on Friday. Everything was perfect and ran like clockwork! We’re delighted with the boat and very pleased we chose the GT41 - it’s going to be perfect for us. We were also very touched by the gifts - a really kind gesture! The trip down to Plymouth went very smoothly and was a real experience, at about 20-24 knots most of the way, and we’re now safely moored at Sutton Harbour Marina for the year. Tim Ball was brilliant. Thank you all for helping us through the purchase process from start to finish - we’re really pleased we bought our new boat from Ancasta. All the best
Excellent work completed at a competitive price. Staff went the extra mile arranging sail laundering in a edition to the servicing and routine maintenance work
Greetings from Gibraltar. I just want to thank you all for such an amazing job getting Starseeker to handover in Gibraltar on 2nd August. I must admit that it was a bit of an emotional day for me because not only is the boat fabulous, but everyone has been so professional and helpful along the journey since I placed the order back in July 2022.  It has been a big learning curve for me as it is the first time I have ever bought a boat, let alone a new one.  What I have realised is that everyone involved is like a big family, and that it really matters that clients are delighted on handover. I really liked the little surprises on the day too.  At the commissioning meeting with Chris & Veronica I did comment about my love of a cuppa, and I was delighted to find a pack of Yorkshire Tea with cups ready for me to brew up. Everyone has done a great job, I cannot fault anything, and I am very grateful to you all for making my retirement plan a reality. Very best wishes. Steve
Purchased a new boat via Ancasta Services, the staff and service was outstanding. They went above our expectations and more. Huge thank you to Sean, Stuart, Veronika, Chris and all the team X
Contacted Ancasta parts department to get a part many said didn’t exist. The team not only got the part, but delivered it to Greece with all taxes included.A great service.
We were sailing in Panama when we has a transmission problem.we tried to find the repair parts in Panama, US and the Caribbean. Ancasta were the only company to have the parts, and get them sent out to us. they really went the extra mile as communication was very difficult whilst sailing.. Special Thank you to Jonathan Rodriguez
Thanks to the whole Ancasta Team and those at Ancasta Yacht Services for the very high standard of prep for the handover of our new Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, especially Paul Butler and Chris Date who looked after the commissioning. The boat looks amazing and sails like a dream; so happy with how we specified the rig and interior.
Please will you pass on my thanks to all the team at Ancasta. The service that all the people at Ancasta have given us has been excellent. I would especially like to thank Jarvis for all the work he has done in preparing the boat and for the very in-depth hand over day. Thank you all very much.

San Diego Yacht Repair & Management

The most common yacht repairs and how to fix them

Ben Cooling

While a yacht refit is used to improve the quality of a vessel or make bespoke additions to suit the owner's requirements, yacht repairs are something of a necessity. It’s inevitable at some stage during a yacht’s lifespan that repair work will need to be carried out, which makes it essential for owners and captains to have an understanding of common yacht repairs and what they entail.

While there are some issues that yacht owners will be able to call out a specialist for, there are others that are too complex and require a visit to a shipyard. Unless you know what you’re doing, it’s always best practice to seek help from an experienced professional when considering how to tackle your yacht’s repair work; a botched job can prove very costly to put right.

In this article, we cast an eye over some common yacht repairs and maintenance works that you’re likely to encounter at some stage as a yacht owner or captain.

Marine coatings: applying antifouling

Applying a marine coating is crucial in the ongoing efforts to protect a superyacht’s hull and maintaining the best performance possible. There are many different layers that offer vessels protection from marine corrosion. Antifouling is one of the most common paints used on yachts and is made with biocides that offer protection from barnacles, algae and other marine organisms.

New black antifouling paint on a yachts hull.

Antifouling is an undertaking that should always be considered vitally important when thinking about yacht repairs and maintenance. It can be applied using a large brush or roller and is a job that is often outsourced to a suitable superyacht repairs painting business, although some owners might choose to carry out the work themselves.

The coating should be applied once a year to vessels that are kept in the water and every other year for yachts that spend time in dry boat storage. Failure to apply antifouling will negatively affect the yacht's performance and result in more fuel consumption due to a build-up of marine growth.

Yacht electrical repairs

There are many different electrical issues that can occur on superyachts, so having a reliable electrical engineer in your contacts book is very useful. We strongly advise against tackling electrical problems on board yourself if you don’t have the relevant knowledge and experience, as this has the potential to be very dangerous.

When it comes to yacht repairs relating to electrics, there are a few common issues:

  • Batteries draining
  • Corrosion of wires
  • Overloaded terminals
  • Circuit breakers tripping

It’s essential that a yacht's electrics are correctly maintained as failure to do so could have more serious repercussions than inconvenience alone. Poorly maintained electrical systems have the potential to cause devastating fires, so they should be checked regularly to avoid such situations from occurring.

Electrical connections can be affected by salt water, which can corrode and damage wires, causing the aforementioned fires and other system failures. It’s best practice to enlist the services of a marine electrician when these repairs are necessary - it’s worth everything being done correctly and with safety in mind. Even if you feel confident in taking on such yacht repairs yourself, it’s still a good idea to have an audit done by a professional.

Yacht fuel system issues

Many issues can arise within a yacht's fuel system that can impact the vessel’s performance and potentially cause engine failure. Stale boat fuel is common due to the fact it degrades very quickly. In time, this can clog the fuel system. If a vessel is going to be docked for a period of time (four weeks or more) then it’s important to ensure the fuel tank is empty, or use a fuel stabiliser to combat the effects.

Inside empty or low yacht fuel tanks, water can build up due to condensation. This ultimately leads to fuel becoming watered down when they are refilled. This will inevitably cause performance issues and can be a very costly repair, especially for owners who have underfloor tanks that are difficult to drain.

Yacht fuel system repairs. Refueling on a yacht. Refueling pistol

Performing larger repairs on a yacht's fuel system, such as removing the tank for cleaning, can be very complex and should only be carried out by trained professionals. There are some other common issues that can negatively impact a yacht's fuel system, such as dirty fuel filters, issues with the fuel primer bulb or a damaged fuel line.

Deck repairs

The deck of a superyacht is in constant use. Whether its for guest activities or socialising, it experiences constant footfall and, at the same time, is exposed to the elements. This amount of action will inevitably lead to the deck of a yacht requiring maintenance and repairs. These are important to keep on top of for a number of reasons, including the fact it will help to prevent bigger issues from occurring later on down the line.

Common yacht repairs that take place on the deck include sealing cracks and replacing rotten or damaged boards. Some jobs will be difficult to carry out alone and will require the help of a skilled carpenter or joiner .

Yacht repair work. Sanding teak deck on the yacht

Caulking is another common repair aboard superyachts. Due to the aforementioned heavy foot traffic and exposure to the elements, the bond between the caulk and boards can become cracked. If you’re planning on carrying out recaulking work yourself then be sure to do plenty of research - it will help you to complete this tricky task successfully.

While there are many more yacht repair and maintenance issues that owners and captains are likely to come across, these are four that regularly occur. If you do encounter problems, it’s important they’re addressed quickly in order to prevent more costly repairs later.

Check your rudder for hairline cracks or damage

Boat maintenance: Mast & Rigging

A sailor applying more backstay tension to a boat rig

Check all your standing rigging connections. Credit: Colin Work

  • The mast cap is out of sight, out of mind 99% of the time, but serves multiple functions: backstay, forestay, cap shrouds, radio antenna, nav lights, halyard sheaves. Rotate mast and boom sheaves to check they are not misaligned or worn by a bad halyard lead. Lubricate sheaves with WD40 or silicone grease.
  • Spreaders, gooseneck, mast heel, kicker, mainsheet and topping lift connections all need checking for wear, damage or corrosion.
  • Check for galvanic corrosion between different metals.
  • Check electrical connections, deck and spreader lights.
  • Wax mast tracks and luff grooves with candle wax or Teflon spray.
  • Standing rigging: Look for areas of wear or stranding on the wire. Check mast tangs, T-ball joints and rigging screws.
  • Wash furling drum and swivel and check they move freely. It’s common for the top swivels to become stiff and sometimes seize, which can compromise the forestay wire.
  • Running rigging: check for chafe and that the shackles aren’t seized. Sheets, halyards, warps: wash in fresh water to get rid of salt and grime.
  • Deck winches : strip down, wash parts in paraffin, wash off with soapy water and lightly regrease .
  • Windlass : if manual, check it’s working, clean and tighten. For powered versions check foot switch for water, clean and use Vaseline on the connections.
  • Anchor chain : Re-mark lengths if faded, or add chain markers. Check for condition and wear.

Head, bilge & gas

Check the bilge pump as part of boat maintenance

Check bilge pumps it might sound ok but is it actually attached to a hose?

  • Check impeller on bilge pumps and grease with water pump grease only (Vaseline will rot impellers)
  • If you have an automatic bilge pump, check float switches work.
  • Dry bilges thoroughly then if water appears after relaunch you’ll know you’ve got a leak.
  • Fill water tank and add purifier such as Puriclean or Milton
  • If the pump on the heads is stiff look to service and lubricate with silicon grease.
  • If you have a gas sensor, check it works.

Boat maintenance: Below waterline

Hull and skin fittings.

Use two jubilee clip on critical connections

Check jubilee clips for rust. Credit: Bob Aylott

  • Most vessels have DZR (dezincification-resistant brass) seacocks. Look for any signs of corrosion on the skin and tail joints, which are common points of failure.
  • Ensure all valves are greased.
  • All hoses should be double-clipped. Check jubilee clips for rust . Do you have wooden plugs attached in case of emergency?
  • Check skin fittings are free of blockages/ growth or antifouling.
  • Check anodes have plenty of life . Don’t forget prop shaft and saildrive anodes.
  • Check leading, trailing and lower sections for damage or hairline cracks.
  • Check for play in bearings, stock or quadrant. Movement should be minimal. Grease steering cable.
  • Check for stress cracks or movement internally and externally – especially at the keel root and around the internal framing or matrix, and around fastenings and backing washers.

Prop shaft & stern gland

  • To check bearings, grasp prop in both hands and try moving it up and down and from side to side. There should be little, if any, movement – no more than 2mm.
  • Check P-bracket for stress cracking from misalignment or damage.
  • Stern gland packing. Many yachts have some form of deep-seal arrangement that has a service life of around seven years. Those that have a proper stuffing gland will need to be greased to prevent drying out and getting brittle. The gland may need pulling down or repacking at some point.
  • If you have a saildrive, check the condition of the seal and the metal ring that holds it in position. Again, note the seals have a life expectancy of between five and seven years depending on manufacture.

Boat maintenance: Mechanics

Diesel

Check all filters

  • If you didn’t change the oil when you laid up, change it now.
  • Change fuel filters.
  • Remove rags stuffed in outlet pipes from winterisation.
  • Impellers – if removed at lay-up – reinstall with a smear of water pump grease.
  • Reinstall the engine belts and check tension: there should be no more than half an inch of play.
  • Check oil levels. Check durability of the gaiter seal. Check rubber faring and reseal if necessary.
  • Change internal engine anode.
  • Check engine mount is secure.
  • Check diesel tank for water from condensation . Drain off or replace fuel. Add an appropriate biocide to help kill off diesel bug .
  • Check inaccessible wiring, such as bonding wires from the anode and earthing wires from the starter motor. Clean the terminals and smear them with Vaseline or silicone gel.

Batteries and electrical systems

  • Check electrolyte level if yours is an open lead acid battery; tighten battery securing straps and make sure vent for gases is clear. Clean terminals and coat with Vaseline. For sealed batteries, check the condition of indicator light, or other charge indicator.
  • Switch on instruments and use backlighting to help reduce any condensation.
  • If the anode looks serviceable for another season, check bonding and wires. If they haven’t worn at all they may not be working so check Ohm resistance max 0.2 from propeller to anode.
  • Check for chafe, wayward stitching and tears. Do you carry a sail repair kit?
  • Take to a sailmaker if the sacrificial strips is worn out.

digital charts being shown on a mobile phone

Make sure your navigation apps are up to date

  • Update charts from Notice to Mariners .
  • For electronic charts, check with your supplier how to update. New chartplotters can connect to WiFi, or you may need to connect the chart chip to your PC at home and download the update.
  • Download operating software updates for your chartplotter and instruments.
  • Make sure your subscriptions for navigation apps on phone and tablets are up to date with the latest charts.
  • Check age of hoses. If they are over five years old, they should be replaced. Check for kinking or wear in gas hosepipes. If in doubt, replace.
  • Check hose clips are tight. Hoses behind cookers should be armoured.
  • Check thermal cut outs on hob, grill and oven work.

Harness/lifelines

  • Check stitching and get repairs done by a sailmaker if necessary.
  • Jackstay and Danbuoy lines: check condition and points of security.
  • If you have the traditional type, check the bulb, battery and that it actually works. The new types have various ways of testing, and all have an expiry date.

Lifejackets

  • Inflate using mouth tube. Leave inflated overnight to check for leaks .
  • Wash with fresh water
  • Weigh cylinder and check lights if fitted.

Stanchions/lifelines

The Boatyard Book – a boat owner’s guide to yacht maintenance, repair and refitting

by Simon Jollands | Boat Maintenance , Preparation , Yacht ownership

yacht repair and maintenance

“This well-presented volume is a guide to making the best use of boatyard time and facilities by careful planning and good organisation…his examples and explanations helped reduce the fear factor and should improve my conversations with professionals – or even my ability to have a go.” – Yachting Monthly

The Boatyard Book is a fully illustrated 224 page practical reference manual that provides advice for boat owners on planning and carrying out annual maintenance, repairs, upgrades and refits of sailing yachts and motorboats, up to 20 metres in length.

What does caring for a boat involve?

Boat care requires understanding the importance of knowing how and when to carry out boat inspections in order to troubleshoot problems before they develop into major issues.

Boat care also entails understanding when and how to carry out essential annual maintenance tasks. If major repairs and refits become necessary, a knowledgeable boat owner with greater understanding of what needs to be done will be in a better position to remain in control of the process and be confident when dealing with boatyard managers, professionals and suppliers of services and parts. All these aspects of boat care are dealt with in The Boatyard Book .

What is covered in the book?

Beginning with all the information owners will need to care for their boat, including how to budget and plan tasks to be done through the year, The Boatyard Book goes on to help them choose the best boatyard for their needs, then provides essential how-to reference material and ideas for a comprehensive range of projects large and small to be carried out ashore.

There’s advice and tips from boatyard owners and managers, specialists and surveyors, as well as from the author’s own 25 years experience of boat ownership, all fully illustrated with step-by-step photos and illustrations.

Topics covered in the book include:

  • hull and deck care
  • mast and rigging
  • maintenance of plumbing and gas systems
  • more complex projects, including re-wiring a boat, overhauling an engine, how to treat osmosis and how to go about a complete refit

Expert tips and advice

The inclusion of advice and tips from experts provides very valuable information for owners, whether they are hands-on DIY fanatics or are happy to pay others to do the work for them. The advice given will help owners to save money when any work needs to be done. This will apply to those who keep their yachts abroad as well as closer to home.

The Boatyard Book includes case studies of real life experiences, not just step-by-step instructions on “how to” but clearly demonstrating pitfalls, difficulties encountered along the way and how problems were solved and the work finally completed. This will help owners to manage their expectations, to expect certain types of work to be more difficult and take longer than they anticipate and help them decide whether they are able to undertake the work themselves or better advised to call in the professionals.

This is a book to be kept at the yard, or on the boat, and used time and time again by those who are either happy to keep things ticking along with the minimum of effort or by those who want to get stuck into bigger projects.

  • Marine Engine Maintenance Guide

yacht repair and maintenance

When you’re  yachting ,  fishing , or running commercial boating , you need to know how to maintain your marine engine. A clean and cared for diesel engine keeps every passenger on your boat safe, so it is critical that you conduct proper boat maintenance.

From how to take care of your engine cooling system to basic marine diesel engine maintenance, you want to understand everything involved in owning and taking care of a marine engine. First, you may want to know the typical costs of boat service, repair, and maintenance.

How Much Does Boat and Marine Engine Maintenance Cost?

yacht repair and maintenance

A variety of factors affect the cost of boat and marine  engine maintenance and repairs . What you pay to maintain your engine and boat depends on the following:

  • The type of boat and engine
  • Who performs the repair
  • The type of maintenance or repair
  • Whether or not your engine needs a diagnosis
  • The part of the engine that needs repairing or maintenance

Your location may also have an impact on the marine engine repair cost, but in general, the problem with the engine is the most significant factor along with who repairs it.

If you want to know how much boat maintenance costs if you hire an expert to do the work, contact them beforehand to get an estimate. It’s a good idea to interview several repair companies, to get an idea of the typical price of the work you want to be performed. While you do want a good deal, you don’t want to choose the cheapest option.

Your boat needs maintenance and repair. Working with an inexperienced company or trying to do the job yourself can mean it needs more extensive repairs, at a higher cost, down the line.

Know what you need to maintain gives you an understanding of how much you can expect to pay.

Most Common Marine Engine Problems

Some types of marine engine problems are more common than others. If you notice any issues with your boat or engine, it may be one a lot of boat owners experience. Some of  the most common marine engine problems  are:

  • Blown fuses
  • Corroded electrical connections
  • Loose alternators
  • Loose belts
  • Clogged fuel filters
  • Clogged sea strainers
  • Old antifreeze
  • Water or other materials in the fuel
  • Damaged impellers
  • Plugged mufflers

While some of these are an easy fix, you may have something more complicated on your hands. Depending on the problem or combination of problems, you could need new parts or help from an expert, including  an engine rebuild . Some repairs and maintenance are simple to conduct on your own, though.

Follow the Manual

Sometimes, the answer to questions like “Do I need to change my boat oil every year?” or, “How do I clean my marine engine?” are easy to find. The boat’s manual might give you step-by-step instructions or otherwise guide you through the process of changing the boat’s oil or cleaning the engine.

You don’t want to rely on general directions or advice when it comes to making repairs to your specific boat model. The maintenance and repair processes are often different for different models and engines. When in doubt, read the manual.

Some of the information you’re likely to find in the manual includes:

  • Changing the oil filter:  Your manual should tell you what type of oil filter to use in your marine diesel engine. If you use the wrong one, you risk restricting oil flow throughout the engine.
  • Putting the raw-water pump back in:  Your manual may advise you to take your impeller out in the fall and replace it in the spring, which is an essential part of engine maintenance. You’ll also want to check your manual when putting the pump in place again. You should find a tightening sequence and torque specs for hose clamps. Follow the steps when reinstalling your raw-water pump to avoid issues with the mechanism.
  • Re-torquing cylinder heads:  You should leave the process of re-torquing cylinder heads to the pros. Your manual should tell you how often you should have someone perform this maintenance. The frequency is based on hours of operation for your engine, so be sure to keep track of how much use the boat gets.

Consider your manual your ultimate guide to boat maintenance. If you have any questions, read the manual, as you’ll likely find a helpful answer there.

Whenever you perform any maintenance tasks, be sure to keep records. Taking notes on repair and maintenance is good practice for any mechanical system, especially marine diesel engines. It lets you see when a task was performed and can help you determine what an issue might be.

A few things to document when it comes to repairs include:

  • A description of the issues
  • What you did to correct the issue
  • Who performed the maintenance or repair.

Keep the maintenance log somewhere safe and remember to update it whenever you conduct anything from basic marine diesel engine maintenance to complex repairs. You can take notes on engine hours of operation and create a calendar or schedule for repair in another section of the log. Recording how much use your marine engine has gotten will help you know when it’s time to re-torque cylinder heads or change the oil.

Your maintenance and repair notes will be useful to anyone who uses your commercial boat or performs repairs. If a driver notices an issue with the engine, they can consult the notes to see if it’s an ongoing problem. A repair person can review your notes to see if similar problems have happened before or if past maintenance work could have contributed to the current issue.

When You Need a Professional

yacht repair and maintenance

While prior knowledge and a manual will help with certain fixes and upkeep, some systems require  the help of a professional . When it comes to engine maintenance, rely on someone with experience and the right tools to take care of:

  • Valve adjustments:  Any diesel engine needs a periodic valve adjustment to keep everything running smoothly. Making a mistake when adjusting the valve of a marine engine can be disastrous, which is why it’s best to leave this one to the pros.
  • Re-torquing cylinder heads:  After a certain number of hours of operation, you should have a professional re-torque the cylinder heads. A professional knows the specifications to follow during this process. The specs need to be followed precisely to avoid harming the engine.
  • Turbochargers:  Turbochargers help an engine’s power and efficiency, so you don’t want to risk any damage to them. They also need specific service specs, which are best left to the pros.
  • Engine control module (ECM) and common-rail engines:  An expert will use their computer to inspect electronically controlled engines further. You can conduct basic service, but be sure to take it to an expert for more in-depth repairs.

If you ever feel unsure about what to do, your safest option is to connect with someone who knows what they’re doing. You don’t want to risk damage to any part of your boat, especially when you use it for commercial purposes.

How Often to Change Your Boat’s Oil

One maintenance task that’s easy enough for most people to handle on their own is changing the oil in a boat engine. Oil does a lot for a marine engine, such as:

  • Lubricating the system and reducing friction
  • Keeping the pistons and cylinders cool
  • Sealing cylinder walls, turbochargers, and valve stems
  • Keeping out contaminants
  • Preventing corrosion

How often you need to change the oil depends partly on how frequently you use your boat. Usually, you’ll want to change the oil after a certain number of hours of use or in the fall, before you put the boat away for the winter. When you change the oil, also replace the filter, gaskets, and seals at the same time.

Check your oil before every trip to make sure there’s enough in the tank. You don’t want to risk running low.

Know Your Cooling System

The  cooling system is one of the four critical aspects  of a marine diesel engine — along with fuel, lubrication, and electricity. A malfunctioning cooling system can damage the entire engine.

A cooling system has two main components:

  • The raw-water system:  The raw-water system takes in seawater for the rest of the engine system. The seawater cools your engine’s freshwater and exhaust gas before leaving the system. It enters through an in-line pump and exits through the exhaust system.
  • The freshwater system:  The freshwater system services the turbocharger, cylinder jacket, and cycle head. Since the freshwater system is a closed-loop, it relies on raw-water to cool it.

The raw-water and freshwater systems contain other components that keep them functioning, just as the engine as a whole does. Clogged sea strainers are not just one of the most common marine engine problems, but they are  the number one cause of failed boat engines . Along with that issue comes raw-water impeller failure.

A properly functioning impeller should look like a gear with rubbery veins. Over time, the part absorbs seawater. As a result, the impeller and its veins harden, bend, or break. If that happens, your engine can’t pump seawater in to cool down freshwater and other systems.

Removing the impeller in the fall keeps its veins from hardening. You can reinstall it in the spring or get a new one to replace it. You’ll need a socket wrench and a tool to remove the impeller, but they are worthwhile purchases since this is a maintenance task that you need to do yearly.

When caring for your freshwater system, focus on the pressure cap. Without a proper seal, your engine could overheat, so choose a quality seal and install it according to specifications. Another simple maintenance fix is changing antifreeze every two years. Use extended-life varieties and only mix with distilled water to keep your marine engine running right.

Some maintenance jobs should be performed by a professional. For example, every three years, you must remove the heat exchanger for cleaning. You should send this device to a professional, but with most engines, you can remove it yourself. Remember, though, that if you have an ECM or common-rail engine, an expert should take care of the entire process.

Maintain Your Fuel

What’s the simplest way to take care of a diesel engine? Keep your fuel tank full. A full tank helps prevent microbial growth in the tank, which can harm the engine system. Other things to do to take care of your fuel system:

  • Maintaining the fuel filter:  Before every trip, be sure to check the inspection bowl. Drain it and rerun it if you see any water. You’ll have to replace your fuel if the bowl fills with water the second time you inspect it. The boat’s manual should let you know what type of fuel filter to use if you need to replace the one in your engine.
  • Bleeding the fuel system:  Air in the fuel system spells disaster for a boat’s engine. Since it will shut down the engine, you need to know how to bleed the fuel system to remove air. There should be a hand pump, which you can access after loosening the screw on the filter. Pump until only fuel comes out of the system. You’ll have to vent the fuel-injection piping with a fuel line wrench if that process does not work.
  • Cleaning up spills:  Spilled fuel could be hazardous to others or damaging to your boat. After refueling or maintaining your marine engine’s fuel system, check for any spills. Use dish detergent to help break down and clean up the diesel. While a spill doesn’t impact your fuel system, it can affect your boat.

The Importance of Regular Boat Prop Repair and Maintenance

Are you concerned about your boat’s condition? Are you worried about the need for boat prop repair?

Owning a boat is a major investment. You want to protect it and make sure you get your money’s worth. Otherwise, you’ll wind up throwing away hundreds or thousands of dollars in repair costs down the line.

If you own a boat and want to ensure it doesn’t experience issues over time, perform regular boat care. In this article, we’ll talk about the importance of boat prop maintenance. That way you know that you’re providing the best care for your boat. Keep reading.

Optimal Performance

Optimal performance is the ultimate goal for every boat owner. It ensures that your boat runs smoothly and safely. Regular boat prop repair is fundamental to achieving this.

With a well-maintained propeller, your boat sails smoothly on the water. You’ll notice quicker response times and better speed control. This leads to a more enjoyable and safer boating experience.

Regular inspection and repairs prevent inefficiencies. It keeps the propeller in prime condition to maximize the boat’s speed and efficiency.

Improves Safety

A well-maintained propeller is essential for safe navigation. A damaged or worn-out propeller can cause vibrations and steering issues. It may not handle water resistance effectively. This can lead to unstable movements, making your boat harder to control.

It’s particularly crucial to have a functioning prop in rough waters or unexpected weather changes. A faulty prop could turn a challenging situation into a dangerous one.

Regular prop repair can prevent these risky scenarios. Therefore, maintaining your boat prop isn’t just about performance; it’s also about safety.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is a major advantage of regular boat prop repair. A well-kept propeller allows the boat’s engine fuel system to work less hard, thus using less fuel.

When your propeller is in good shape, it cuts through the water smoothly. This maximizes your boat’s momentum and minimizes fuel consumption. If your propeller has dents or other damage, it can create unnecessary resistance and drag. This resistance makes your engine work harder and guzzle more fuel.

Regular prop repairs can help you spot and fix these issues early, saving you money at the fuel dock. So, for a more economical boating experience, don’t overlook the importance of maintaining your propeller.

Longevity of the Engine

Regular boat prop repair contributes significantly to the longevity of the boat’s engine. A well-tuned propeller results in lesser engine strain. This means the engine doesn’t have to work as hard, leading to reduced wear and tear. It’s a simple fact – a healthier engine lasts longer.

Additionally, a damaged propeller may cause the engine to use more fuel, run hot, or even misfire. These issues, over time, can cause serious damage. Regular prop maintenance helps avoid this, effectively extending the life of your engine.

In essence, by taking care of your boat’s propeller, you’re also taking care of its engine. Routine prop maintenance can save you costly engine repairs in the long run. This can ultimately extend your boating adventures for many more years.

Smooth Sailing Experience

An important part of enjoying your boating adventure is achieving a smooth sailing experience. Routine boat prop repairs play a pivotal role in this. A well-maintained propeller allows your boat to glide effortlessly across the water. The difference is noticeable, especially when the waters get rough.

The key to this is to find the perfect boat propeller and take good care of it. When the propeller is in top shape, your boat responds better to your commands. The steering becomes smoother, and the boat becomes more responsive. It’s about ensuring that your boat and the water are in perfect harmony.

Therefore, remember, a well-kept propeller is not just about performance or safety; it’s about enhancing your on-water experience.

Preventing Corrosion

Corrosion is a common problem that can severely damage your boat’s propeller. Regular boat prop repair and maintenance can help prevent this issue. When water and oxygen come into contact with the metal of the propeller, it can start to corrode. This corrosion can cause severe damage if left unchecked.

It’s important to clean your propeller regularly to remove any buildup that could cause corrosion. Using a soft cloth and mild detergent can help keep the propeller clean. After cleaning, it’s crucial to dry the propeller thoroughly. Any leftover moisture can lead to rust.

Another effective strategy is applying a protective coating to the propeller. This coating acts as a barrier between the propeller’s metal and the corrosive elements. It can prevent the onset of rust, extending the lifespan of your propeller.

Always inspect your propeller for signs of corrosion during your regular maintenance checks. If you spot any corrosion, it’s best to address it immediately.

Avoiding Downtime

Regular boat prop repair plays a vital role in minimizing downtime. When your propeller is in good shape, you’re less likely to encounter unexpected issues. No one enjoys unexpected stops in their boat trips due to breakdowns.

Repairing minor damages early prevents them from becoming major problems. Addressing these issues promptly means fewer repairs in the future. Less repair time equals more time on the water.

In essence, regular maintenance is a proactive approach to avoid downtime. So, to keep your boat trips uninterrupted, make regular boat prop repair a priority.

Legal Compliance

Adhering to maritime laws is another crucial aspect of owning a boat. There are specific regulations in place regarding boat maintenance and repair, including the propeller. Compliance is not just a legal obligation, but it also enhances the safety and longevity of your boat.

Regular boat prop repair aligns with these laws, ensuring your boat meets safety standards. Ignoring these rules can lead to penalties or even the suspension of your boating license.

Remember, keeping your propeller in good condition isn’t only beneficial for the boat and your safety, but it’s also a legal requirement.

The Essential Role of Regular Boat Prop Repair

Regular boat prop repair and maintenance are crucial for all boat owners. It not only improves the performance and safety of your vessel but also helps save money in the long run by preventing costly repairs. So make sure to schedule routine check-ups and address any issues with your boat prop promptly to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.

With proper care and attention, your boat prop can provide you with years of enjoyable boating experiences. Happy sailing!
