BEHIND THE DESIGNER

Riccardo Bulgarelli, an Italian yacht designer and naval architect with 12 years working with the world’s top shipyards and yacht companies. Obtained a bachelor degree in yacht design and naval architect (ranked 26th in the world) at the University of Genoa, Italy. After getting his Master's Degree at the University of Southampton (ranked 24th in the world), he was invited to work in the Ferretti Group. Later, he served as the chief engineer of ship design at another renowned Italian yacht company, Della Pieta.

Riccardo focuses on people's life details while pursuing innovation in his design. Adhering to the principle of making design serve life better, Riccardo provides customers with a series of reliable and customized services. Especially in the design of power catamarans capable of long-distance navigation, with his acute aesthetic sense of yacht appearance and high-end interior decoration.

Diamond was built by AB Yachts in Viareggio, Italy. It was delivered to an American client on the last day of December in 2012. AB Yachts was created in 1992 with the goal of setting the standard in the world of pleasure yachting. Since then it has taken distinctive steps in the boat building world. For the first time we have seen jet drives applied to high performance craft with small dimensions. Specifically researched structural resins have been introduced, collaborating with the most innovative firms in the field of composite materials. Finite element design programs have been applied to optimize the sizes of existing structures.

These are just a few of innovation introduced by AB Yachts, which is now a consolidated enterprise with ample spaces for building and completing yachts. AB Yachts is a future-oriented shipyard. Accommodations Diamond has a four stateroom layout with a GYM that offers pullman berths for availability of a fifth guest stateroom. The master suite is midships and full beam. The king berth, large seating area and enormous bathroom will please even the most demanding. There is a queen berth in one of the guest suites, twins in another and bunks in the kids room. Every stateroom has a private, oversized, bathroom.

Forward of the stateroom space is an atrium that offers a great seating area for private conversations, watching football or simply relaxing. Forward of the Atrium is the crew area and galley. There are three crew staterooms with heads and showers. The crew has their own dining/lounging area. On the main deck is the open, airy salon and pilothouse. The pilothouse is equipped with every modern electronic device necessary to take Diamond to amazing adventures. On first inspection you will note the simplicity in the joystick controls for the MJP jets. The dining salon is just aft of the pilot station. It seats ten. The roof over the dining salon opens offering great views and fresh air. The salon is aft of the Dining salon divided by a low hutch. Immediately you will observe the large windows on this entire main deck offering great views from any location. The aft deck is spacious and offers entertainment space and seating as well as a large lounging area. The transom opens to supply storage for a tender, jetskiis, dive equipment or nearly any water sports gear. On the main deck forward of the pilothouse and accessed by the wide walk around deck is a comfortable seating area for ten with an umbrella for sun protection. There is a tender garage on the bow for a second tender or more jetskiis. The flybridge offers sunning, seating and dining options. There is also a pilot station on the flybridge. Diamond will reach speeds of 48 knots and will cruise at 40 knots.

Oceanco reveals diamond-covered yacht concept Lumen

Dutch yard Oceanco used the recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to exhibit a diamond-covered version of its 92 metre Project Lumen.

Designed by Adriel Rollins in 2011, this PYC-compliant yacht concept was given a spectacular Sun King finish, which used real diamonds to create a shimmering, luminescent effect.

The patent-pending Sun King process was created by Jean Boulle Luxury, which is working with partners AkzoNobel to roll out into the world of automobiles, airplanes and yachts.

Bertrand Boulle, CEO of Jean Boulle Luxury, said: “Sun King Diamond Coating has a number of potential superyacht applications and its qualities are unmatched by any other product on the market”.

Oceanco chose Project Lumen to be given this special scale model treatment due to its focus on light, with extensive use of reflective metals, LEDs and transparent materials, including a tubular glass elevator and floating superyacht staircase .

Accommodation is for up to 36 guests and the design allows for a flush foredeck superyacht helipad , a sundeck Jacuzzi and a large spa pool on the aft deck. Rollins added: “I wanted the exterior styling to work in tandem with the hull form, instead of appearing to be stacked upon the hull.”

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include the 109 metre Oceanco Y718 , which is due to launch next year.

The award winning 36.2m/118'9" open yacht 'Diamond' was built by AB Yachts in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard. Her interior is styled by Dutch designer design house Guido de Groot Design and she was delivered to her owner in June 2012. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Marco Arnaboldi.

Guest Accommodation

Diamond has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites comprising one VIP cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 6 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Diamond is built with a kevlar composite hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by 3 x diesel MTU (16V2000 M93) 2,400hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 40 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 49 knots with a range of up to 461 nautical miles from her 18,500 litre fuel tanks. Her low draft of 1.14m/3'9" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Her water tanks store around 3,200 Litres of fresh water. She was built to RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) classification society rules.

Where is ulm.

Ulm is one of the major cities in Baden-Württemberg and famous, amongst other things, for its spectacular minster right in the centre.

Originally it was an important port on the Danube - German-speaking emigrants set off here to head downstream to settle areas of Eastern Europe.

How to get to Ulm

Nearest airport to ulm.

Memmingen and Stuttgart airports are the closest airports for flying into the Ulm area. Allgäu Airport (Memmingen) is popular for low-cost flights, while Stuttgart has a mix of scheduled airlines and cheaper carriers - both are easily reached on public transport.

Munich Airport is one of the busiest in Europe and probably has the most choice of all the options, along with an excellent public transport infrastructure.

Train stations in Ulm

The main railway station for Ulm is around 10 minutes' walk from the city's central square. Neu-Ulm across the Danube has its own railway station for those staying on the other side of the river.

Those travelling from Bavaria should note that Ulm is covered on the very reasonable Bayern-Ticket railcard, even though it is in the neighbouring state of Baden-Württemberg. (It is of course also included in the Baden-Württemberg-Ticket.)

Where to stay in Ulm

Ulm's range of hotel accommodation tends towards the perfectly functional rather than the luxuriously decadent.

One definite exception is the Hotel Schiefes Haus , which provides quirky stream-side accommodation in one of Ulm's most historic buildings.

Most of the options are within walking distance of the main railway station or the historic centre. Across the river, Neu-Ulm offers additional choice, if necessary.

History of Ulm

The area around Ulm is thought to have first been settled back in the Stone Age. The first official mention of the city comes back in the 9th century, when it was being used as a 'Königspfalz' - a German term meaning a temporary palace which would be used by a travelling king and his retinue.

The city and many of the surrounding villages were destroyed during wars between rival claimants to the throne of Germany and title of Holy Roman Emperor.

Ulm was rebuilt during the rule of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and given its town charter (and subsequently its rights as an autonomous town - a 'Reichsstadt') in the 12th century.

The inhabitants busied themselves by protecting their freshly-won rights. The original town walls can still be seen in parts of Ulm (for example, in the Fischerviertel). As the town grew more wealthy, it expanded rapidly and the city walls that can nowadays be seen were built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

One of the major advantages of Ulm - as with so many other present-day large towns - was its strategic position and transport connections. The Romans recognised the location as important as it marked the border of what was known as Imperial Rome.

Ulm was the destination for raft traffic bringing goods out of the Alpine region near Oberstdorf. It is also situated at the first navigable point of the Danube for larger boats and was an important port for downstream exports in the days when the land journey was slower and more dangerous.

In later centuries many poorer inhabitants of Swabia (the cultural region surrounding Ulm) emigrated to the eastern European regions which had been liberated from Turkish rule, using distinctive boats which housed over a hundred passengers and which were broken up for timber at the end of the journey down the Danube.

The Middle Ages were a time of great turbulence for Ulm. There were political arguments between the power blocs of the aristocratic families and the rich merchants (settled over the medium term in favour of the merchants) and later religious disputes between Catholics and the new Protestant religion.

Ulm took the Protestant side in the wars of the Reformation, but ended up on the losing side. The beginning of the 16th century had been Ulm's heyday and there now followed a succession of central European wars which helped bankrupt the town.

At the same time, the discovery of America diminished the importance of Ulm's transport connections to the east and, in the early 19th century, the town was transferred from Bavaria to Württemberg, losing political importance along the way.

The building of a massive military fortress (housing thousands of soldiers in peacetime) helped alleviate some of the economic problems. Ulm and the neighbouring town of Neu-Ulm across the river were one of the biggest garrisons in Germany.

Over 80% of the town was destroyed during bombing raids in the Second World War - the famous church spire remained untouched, however.

The Ulm Minster

The minster in Ulm - with the highest church spire in the world - is the symbol of the city. ('Minster' is a title used for certain large churches and the Ulm Minster is the largest evangelical church in Germany.)

Started in the 14th century, it took another five centuries to finish the construction. By that time, the church that had been started in a Catholic community became one of the most visible Protestant symbols.

Despite its height and imposing mass in the town centre, the building was never intended as a cathedral (as many other major ecclesiastical construction projects were elsewhere). It was financed by the citizens of Ulm and designed for them to exert control over their parish church.

The previous church had been outside the town walls - which was problematic in troubled times - and was administered by the Reichenau monastery on Lake Constance - which meant that the wealth of the church and the donations to it went to the monks.

The reason for the lengthy construction time was financial - the citizens ran out of money to complete the building and construction work was put on hold for three centuries. It was only in 1890 that the final work was completed.

The famous church spire is slightly more than 160m in height and it is possible to climb to over 140m during opening hours. This involves first climbing one of the side pillars (one is used on the way up and one on the way down) until the narrower top section of the central spire is reached.

Traffic is in both directions here and the top section is quite cosy when many people are squeezing past each other. The views over Ulm and, on certain very clear days, through to the Alps from the top gallery after climbing a total of 768 steps are however worth all of the effort.

In 2015 the Ulm Minster celebrated the 125th anniversary of the completion of the church.

The Fishermen's Quarter

This is one of the most picturesque and historic parts of the city. The Fishermen and Tanners' Quarter dates back to the Middle Ages and can be found in a relatively small area between the river Danube, the main Neue Strasse street and the railway lines.

The area is best seen during a quiet stroll in the early morning. It can become crowded later in the day and in the evening it is a popular location for a meal and a drink.

When the buildings in this area were originally constructed back in the early Middle Ages many of them were outside the city walls of the time. Tanning, especially, was a dirty and extremely smelly occupation and the inhabitants of the area were considered rough and ready work people.

Over the years Ulm slowly expanded and the Fischerviertel was enclosed within the new city walls.

It was also where the ships were constructed to make the journey down the Danube. The former shipbuilding guild's headquarters, the Zunfthaus, has now been converted into a restaurant.

The current of the Grosse Blau stream flowing through the area was used for a number of watermills. The oldest remaining mill and waterwheel, the Lochmühle near the Neue Strasse, has also been renovated and turned into a restaurant.

Ulm Tourist Office

The Ulm Tourist Office is located in the central square opposite the minster in the new Stadthaus building. It is open all week in the summer and from Monday-Saturday in the winter. Traditional guided city tours are available as well as Segway tours and audio guides. Website : www.tourismus.ulm.de

The Welcome Center

The Welcome Centre Ulm/Oberschwaben has been located at the self-governing organisation Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Ulm since 1 April 2014. The region of IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) Ulm covers the Alb-Donau district, Biberach and the district of Ulm.

The central task of the Welcome Center is to support companies in finding and retaining skilled workers. Thus, the Welcome Center is one part of the IHK Ulm’s efforts in various spheres of activity to mitigate the progressive shortage of skilled professionals in the region. Since it was founded in 2014, the Welcome Center Ulm/Oberschwaben has cooperated closely with its project partners and regional networks such as the Fachkräftebündnis Ulm/Oberschwaben (Professionals Alliance) in the working group Internationale Fachkräfte (International Specialists), and with the employment agency and universities.

The Welcome Center Ulm/Oberschwaben is one of a total of 10 Welcome Centers in Baden-Württemberg , which are financed partly by the respective funding agencies and partly by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing.

• To provide initial advice to international professionals and their families on working and living in our region
• To offer guidance on dealing with authorities and institutions

Under the slogan #welcometoyourjob, we publish video clips about success stories of international professionals who have found their feet in the region, both professionally and privately. The professionals talk about their experiences and how they came to the companies in Ulm. The Welcome Center Ulm/Oberschwaben accompanied and supported them.
